Checker

The boy with the knives.

0 · 484 views · located in The Asheville Forest

a character in “Asheville”, as played by Vercerigo

Description

Checker is a Killer who claims not to have any supernatural powers, but is always one step ahead of everyone else, literally. You could dump him at a restaurant, get into a car, drive home, and he'd be sitting on your front porch railing. He is always the first person to be at a crime scene, and always the first person you meet when you go to the bar to get the horrible imagery out of your head.
He is obsessed with knives, and is always collecting them. He likes riddles, mysteries, and is a good sport about things. Sometimes, if a victim has tried hard enough, he'll let them escape. Checker is not always out trying to kill or maim people. He can be very normal, and sometimes will even take off his mask and walk into town, getting a drink at the local bar, and playing games at the arcade. He has the highest score on Time Crysis 3. He is called Checker because of his mask, which is gridded in large black and white squares. He has a good sense of humour, and is known to whisper, "Checkmate." right before he kills someone.

So begins...

Checker turned the corner to the church and breathed in the cold, misty air. He looked around. Seeing no one, he continued up the hill until he was walking among the gravestones.

Carlyle watched from the church's roof, watching Checker as he walked into the graveyard. It was over a small hill from the church but from the high roof he could still see. He rested his elbows on his knees as he watched him curiously. The town had been a bit quiet lately and he was growing bored easily.

Checker scanned the cemetery, searching among the crumbling reminders of lives lost. He continued walking along, sliding his fingers on the tops of gravestones as he went by. Finally, he found what he was looking for. Glancing behind him, he saw nothing but the rutted path leading back to town. No one there. He gave the church a once over, seeing nothing out of the ordinary. He walked over to the grave, kneeling in front of it. The name on the grave had long been scratched off, leaving a nameless body buried 6 feet below him. But Checker knew who it was. After all, he was the one who scratched off the name. He took out a long black hooked blade, and scratched another jagged line through the already illegible name. "What's it like down there, dad?" He spoke aloud, in an almost mocking tone. He stood up and dropped a black rose onto the mound. Snapping shut the blade, he began to walk towards the church, humming a tune as he did.

Checker noticed the eerily tall man walk into the church seemingly out of nowhere. He stopped, startled. He was almost impossible to sneak up on, something of which he was immensely proud of. Yet this man had literally walked right by him, without him noticing. He frowned, and tilted his head when he noticed how the man was walking. He was walking in...strange, jerky movements. He was sure that this guy was a Killer, just like him. He considered leaving, but then mentally shook his head, and followed after the man into the church, intent on finishing his ritual. Who knows? He might talk to him. He might end up killing him, or vice versa. He checked over his shoulder, checking for Civilians. There were too many Killers in Civ territory right now, and he was concerned about a Civ seeing them all. Looking back, he continued up towards the church.

Mr. Smith's smile some how grows wider. He sits in the second row of pews and glances back at Checker. He waves and returns his focus to the Reverend. "Nice night. How are you folks?"

Checker nodded to the Reverend, wondering when he started working in the Church, and whether he was a Civilian or a Killer. If he was a Civilian, he wondered if he knew they were Killers. According to ancient tradition, they should be at each other’s throats right now. He didn’t care to uphold that law right now, as he was here for only one purpose, and besides, the Reverend did seem a little...off. He didn’t like the tall guy’s arrogance, especially in this place. He smirked and continued down the center aisle, sitting down on the far end of the pews, in the front.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Upon hearing the tall man's words, Checker cautiously stood up and turned. He now knew for sure that the tall guy was a Killer, and although he too wanted to know whether or not the Reverend was a Killer too, he did not want the him to be hurt. He was right in saying that the house of God belonged to no one but God, and now it seemed that the tall man was going to kill him. Checker did not agree with the direction this was going.
He spoke calmly. "You." Nodding in the direction of the tall man, he continued, "Don't hurt him. He was nice enough to accept us here and you probably know how few other places will let people like us in." Although he spoke peaceably, his eyes were scanning the man, preparing for a fight if the need came. The man had his hand behind his back, and although Checker hadn't seen any weapons there earlier, that didn't mean crap in Asheville.

Reverend smiles happly at Checker. "Thank you you want is your name my child." His smile seem as though he was told the best knew as he calm and politely ask "Why would people like you be denied entrance to anywhere?" He places gentle behind his back standing up straight with an almost ignorant smile as though he didn't even really notice he was just threatened or didn't care.

Checker looked from the tall guy to the Reverend and back.
"My name is Checker." He said. He tilted his head. "I don't think myself particularly special either, but at least I know my bounds." He spoke the last part with a low voice. He watched as the man played with a pistol that he had grabbed seemingly out of nowhere. "And you, what's your name?" He gestured to the tall man. He asked the Reverend the same question. He paused. "Also, Reverend, are you a Civilian?"

"My name is Mr. Smith. I guess I won't need this." He stops spinning the pistol and drops it behind the pew he is sitting on. It clatters on the floor.

Mr. Smith eyes them both as he hums lowly to himself, ignoring the Reverend's question. The tune he hums is creepy and unsettling.

Checker eyed Mr. Miles. Wasn't this a Protestant Church? He shrugged. "I don't believe I have any sins that I haven't already confessed, Mr. Miles. And, personally, I don't think I need to sit inside a box for my sins to be heard. I'm also a bit claustrophobic."
He leaned back on the pew, crossing his arms. "But thank you. I'm here for a tradition that I uphold every month. It's very parental." He smirked.

Mr. Smith stands and sighs. "Well this has been fun, but I must leave." He turns and heads for the door, singing to himself. "I could save your life, but I'd rather watch you die. All the people say I'm crazy, but I'm just..." The door swings shut behind him, cutting him off.

Checker tilted his head slightly. "Like I said, I don't have any sins that I can't confess myself. But thanks for the offer, Reverend. “If you don’t mind, I think I’ll stay here a little longer. I need to finish my...ritual.” He smiled at the word. “Goodnight, Reverend.” He watched the Reverend carefully. There was something off about him, something he couldn’t quite place.

"Ritual, you say for what if i may ask." He says cheerful as he wraps a rosary around his hand and placing it to his heart. "I might be able to help I have performed a few... rituals (he says it slowly soft tone almost erie when put against normal happy tone) in my day"

Checker put his hands in his pockets. He had never shared his ritual with anyone else before. "I don't think you'd approve of it, Reverend. It involves me, a Killer, praying to my Father. And I'm not sure why, but with your religion, Catholicism, I need someone to speak to my own Father for me."
He sighed and straightened. "I'm a Protestant. I think I can speak to my Father without anyone intervening. If you're going to stay and pray, you'll be praying with me, not for me." His face became a bit saddened, and he looked down at his feet. "Reverend."

Checker remained looking at the ground. "It's my dad. Not my spiritual one, but my earthly one. He was killed about a year and a half ago. I come here every month, to remember him, and to ask for forgiveness."
His hands clenched, and then relaxed. "But I'm going to stop coming. It solves nothing. There's no sense praying for his soul either. Where he is now is where he's staying."
He looked back up at the Reverend. "Thank you, Reverend, but I have to go."
Checker turned and left, his footsteps echoing quietly in the church.

Checker stepped onto the bridge, hearing it creak in protest. He smirked at the pathetic wood and continued on, walking on the bridge. He was thirsty, and the church hadn't had any water fountains or anything, so he was going to try Mortem's Pub and Inn. He heard they had some interesting, and possibly illegal, drinks that he wanted to try out. His black jacket fluttered in the breeze, and he smiled at the sound of the rustling trees as he walked.

Red Rain watches the man walk across the bridge. He seemed too calm and confident to be a civilian or a hunter walking into the Killer's domain. He closes his eyes for a second before stepping out of the bush. With a wide smile on his face he follows the man onto the bridge. He runs his sword across the metal railing. "What are you doing all the way out here, kid? Someone might hurt you."

Checker stopped, and surveyed the man that had come out of the bushes. He had hidden really well. He narrowed his eyes at the loud grating noise the sword made on the railing. Sighing, he spread his hands apart and spoke in a low voice. "Someone might try. I'm not the kind of kid people usually attempt to hurt." He smiled. "But thanks for your concern."
