Description

Image
Name: Elspeth Vandemere
Alias: ‘Captain’
Picture: Image
Description: Elspeth has long brown hair that sits around her shoulders. It is usually fairly tangled and tingled with sea spray as well as being sun bleached after a great deal of time out on the deck. Her skin is fairly pale and freckles at the slightest hint of sunlight and therefore, has more than her fair share. Her eyebrows are arched quite highly which gives her the impression of being perpetually amused with a scar cutting through the middle of her right eyebrow. Elspeth’s eyes are quite rounded and are decorated with sleepy shadows that have cultivated over the years. Her eyes are a soft blue with highlights of hazel throughout with a coloboma in her left eye, giving the pupil a keyhole appearance. Her lips are plump and coloured slight red. Elspeth’s face is an oval shape and her chin has two slight dents from pox marks located slightly to the left.

Elspeth’s hands are covered in rough calluses, mementos from all the time she has spent maintaining her ship and taking it around the land. Her palms are scarred and burned from mishaps with candles and sharpening working knives although these injuries are less common now. Her nails are raggedy and there is a good amount of dirt and sea salt imbedded underneath them.

Elspeth typically wears a worn red shirt that has shrunk to a glove fit, complete with a few holes and loose threads after being worn so frequently. She also wears a long jacket with a scorch mark (or five) along the bottom that belonged to her older brother before she borrowed it. She also stole a rather fetching looking hat from said brother but doesn’t wear it quite so often as it keeps blowing off in the wind. Elspeth also wears a neck tie made of white cloth that has started to get a little raggedy from the sea spray. She also wears a pair of worn denim trousers with a rip torn in the right knee and a smattering of candle wax marks over her thigh. Her boots are made of sea worn leather and come just below her knees. She is often seen to be wearing black leather gloves, merely for comfort more than anything. Elspeth also keeps a hunting knife in her belt in case of emergencies although she blanches at the idea of using it and a work knife that she uses around the boat and for repairs.

Age:27
Sex:Female
Date of Birth:July 25th, 567
Birthplace:A small fishing village in Triveila that clings to the coast line of the ocean.
Current Location/Residence:Not currently a fixed position as she travels from place to place upon her trading ship.
Ethnicity:Irlean
Height:5’9”
Weight:130lbs
Frame/Build:A curvy hourglass figure
Hair Colour:Brown with highlights of light sun bleached blonde
Hair Length:Shoulder length with a sweeping fringe over the right side of her face
Eye Colour:Delicate light blue eyes which are highlighted with hazel streaks. Elspeth also has a coloboma, a defect of the pupil, in her left eye which makes her pupil eerily reminiscent of a keyhole.
Distinguishable Markings: Her coloboma is fairly distinguishable as well as the array of distinct scars on her hands.
Complexion: Elspeth has light skin with a smattering freckles across her face and arms as well as a large array of scars across her hands. She also has two small pox marks around her chin.
Voice Type: Contralto

Behavioural Quirks Elspeth has an almost obsessive need to check upon her wares and her ship, understandable considering they are her sole source of income. She is also uncomfortable at the idea of being out of her comfort zone. She is used to sailing, selling and buying. Other things tend to make her uncomfortable, especially when they are important and others are relying on her greatly.
Political Affiliation:No Political Affiliation
Social Class:Lower Class
Occupation:Trader
Religious Beliefs:Goddecca
Family:
-Father: Artur Vandemere, fisherman and trader (deceased, natural causes (old age))
--Uncle: Kanduke Vandemere, fisherman and trader (deceased, lost at sea)

--Uncle: Kilno Gudrun, trader, works alongside Elspeth

--Sister-In-Law: Haida Vandemere, vendor of seafood (nee Nyar)
-Sister: Katina Vandemere, (deceased, natural causes (illness in infancy))
Sister: Taima Vandemere, vendor of seafood(younger by ten years)

Personality:Elspeth is a rather calm and collected young woman with a level head and a great deal of patience. She is used to coming against hardships and working through them. She doesn’t appear very energetic or especially lively, that is all kept inside. She had to appear as the responsible and calm older sibling alongside Darni when their father died. Thus, most of her emotions have been internalised to a great degree but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have them. Elspeth is incredibly focussed and puts a great deal of importance in family and work. Leisure time means nothing to her. She has a soft spot for children as they remind her of her younger sisters. It takes quite a lot for Elspeth’s anger to reveal itself but when it does, she can be as wrathful as the sea herself.

Elspeth is not considered the most graceful or ladylike of women. In fact, she would probably shun you if you tried to say so. She loathes the idea of being a sweet little housewife and loving graceful wife. She believes that that is not the way things are meant to be. Elspeth is also not adverse to violence. Although it does take a lot for her anger to show, she will not take being attacked lightly. She may not fight with any weapons but her fists are good enough. She was taught to fight by her brother and his friends and can throw punches like nobody’s business. However, she would have to be exceptionally hard pressed to even think about killing someone. She treats each life as sacred and although violence doesn’t faze her, the idea of taking someone’s life makes her rather uncomfortable.

Elspeth is also rather tactless. Living in a family where it was just easier to speak her mind than to skirt around the issue, she often just says what she sees or thinks without thinking about the consequences. Therefore, it can be rather difficult to warm up to the young woman. Elspeth is also a lot more familiar and comfortable around men as she feels she doesn’t fit in with the soft gentle ladylike women. Therefore, if there is a group of people, she’ll often gravitate towards the males as she feels she fits in there more.

Strengths:Elspeth has garnered quite a good deal of muscle from her work on the boat and is quite strong as a result. She is also well versed in most things to do with the ocean, whether that be fishing, sailing or just reading the sea itself and predicting the weather to some degree. She also possesses skills in repairing and building, skills that she needed for her business and her family. She is also able to fight, particularly in close combat. She was also taught to swim by the time she could toddle and is a powerful swimmer, something very important considering her situation.

Weaknesses:Elspeth has very little tact and often offends people without meaning to. She also is unversed in area of weapons other than her knives, which are almost purely for work. She is also unwilling to kill anyone and finds the idea of murder deplorable.

Equipment:A small folding pocket knife she uses for repairs, carving and work. It is made of steel and its handle is made of a stag’s antler and was bought by her father when he was trading. When he died, the knife was passed down onto her. She also carries a hunting knife for safety. The knife’s blade is also made of steel and the handle is cocobola with a brass butt and guard. This knife is carried purely for emergencies and is rarely used, meaning it is in far better condition than the folding knife. Elspeth also carries a small piece of whetstone in her pocket to sharpen her tools at any time.

Biography:Elspeth was born on the 25th of July to a lower class family in Traveila. Her mother, Ridha, had already had a son, Darni, who was three years old at the time and was very disappointed that the baby turned out to be a girl. Ridha’s husband was out fishing with his brother, Kanduke, and his brother in law, Kilno, at the time of the baby’s birth. However, this was not unusual. In fact, most of the women in the village had gone through the same thing and rallied round to support the young mother. The baby was named Elspeth Nootka Vandemere, named after her father’s mother and her family’s ship name respectively. Her father did not see the baby until her second month and was overjoyed at the sight of the tiny infant with the bright shock of brown hair upon her head. However, this just meant there was another mouth to feed and that Artur would have to work harder. The family didn’t see it this way and found the new child to be a blessing.

As Elspeth started to grow, she followed her older brother around as all children tend to do. She learned how to walk fairly quickly after becoming irritated at the fact she couldn’t keep up with Darni. Despite this advancement in walking, her speech was much slower, she didn’t properly learn to speak until well into her third year, although her family could understand what her various shrieks and wails meant. It became a common sight around the village to see the young Vandemere boy holding the hand of a babbling toddler with tangled unruly brown hair and the big blue eyes. Her older brother started to show off his younger sister, making sure everyone in the village knew that this was his sister. Darni brought it upon himself to teach his little sister a great deal of important thing such as, how to swim. Of course, he taught her in the rock pools and it wasn’t so much swimming as splashing but before too long, she was bobbing around the shallows under the watchful eyes of her mother, aunt and older brother. Darni also taught her how to fight as he worried that the older children would walk all over his baby sister. He needn’t have worried; she took to protecting herself as easily as a duck to water. Darni could help but be even more proud of his sister and started showing her off to his friends and showing them how strong the little girl was.

Elspeth was seven when her mother was pregnant for the third time and, just as Darni had been before, she was immensely excited. She couldn’t wait for another sibling and to be friends with. After all, all her friends were Darni’s friends first and they weren’t quite as friendly with her yet. Sure, they appreciated the fact that she could swim rather deep and had small hands that could fit in the cracks on the underwater rocks and the fact that she could fight back if anyone went after her but she was still ‘Darni’s little sister’ and not ‘Elspeth’. When the baby was born, she was given the name Katina and the whole family doted upon her. The baby was happy and healthy for a few months before the illness struck. The infant was infected with a horrible disease that left her unable to feed or be lifted. She couldn’t keep her food down and her skin was too sensitive to touch without causing pain. There was no treatment or cure. The family were unable to do anything but watch as the baby wasted away and eventually died. She was five months old and her father had never seen her. The family went into mourning and were hurt deeply by their loss. Elspeth refused to accept that Katina had died and spent most of her time searching round the house for the baby. This lasted a few weeks before Darni grabbed her by the wrist and dragged her out of the house before explaining that the baby wasn’t coming back. Elspeth didn’t speak for the rest of the week.

After the family had tried to get over their loss, another tragedy struck. When Artur and his brother, Kanduke, were fishing, a huge storm front had come in and battered the boat against a rocky outcrop. The ship, the Nootka V, was ripped apart by the howling raging winds and the harsh seas until only the frame remained. Artur managed to get into the lifeboat and waited for his brother who he had assumed was right behind him. Kanduke never appeared. With heavy hearts and a great deal of weeping, the family accepted that the sea had taken Kanduke, the sea that had been his life had caused his death. Artur returned to his family, wracked with grief and pain for his lost brother. Elspeth and Darni were heartbroken over their lost uncle and were scared that the sea would claim their father next time. Their father put these fears to rest, to a degree, as he said he was not going back to fishing, instead he would be a trader. This was a large decision as despite being safer, trading meant he would be away for longer. Ridha was unsure but accepted that it had to be done. Thus, Elspeth’s father, her other uncle, Kilno, Darni and Elspeth herself got to work on building the Nootka VI. The ship’s name had been passed on for generations, the name Nootka belonging to her great, great grandmother. However, this was the first time the name had been given to a trading vessel rather than a fishing boat. The Nootka VI was much larger than her previous namesakes and had a much bigger hold. The ship had two main masts which had the names Katina and Kanduke carved on the top as well as a great deal of other sails. The Nootka VI felt a little like closure for the family and Elspeth felt that as construction was completed, their grief was finally allowed to ebb a little.

Life carried on as normal for the Vandemere’s from that point on. The years passed and the children grew into teenagers and adults. Darni had reached his 21st birthday and was out fishing on his own vessel, a small ship by the name of Ridha. Elspeth had reached the age of seventeen and was determined that she was to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a trader. She wanted to see the world and return with stories like her father did. She wanted to have the same kind of adventures, see different things, meet new people. She daydreamed about this kind of life as she worked at home and on the odd boat. Their father was gone for weeks, often months at a time but when he came back, the joy was indescribable. Although as Artur worked, his family were growing. Ridha was pregnant once more and Elspeth was doing everything within her power to make sure that the pregnancy went as smoothly as possible. Darni was in a relationship with a young village woman named Haida Nyar and was completely sure that this was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. It seemed Haida felt the same way, as she was often seen waiting on the docks for the Ridha to come in each day. In fact, Darni was so sure, he was going to ask her to marry him. He had told Elspeth in a fit of worry and after laughing at his panic, she tried to soothe his fears and reassured him that, yes, Haida was as devoted to him as he was to her.

Then, that same year, deep in winter during a truly vicious storm, Ridha went into labour. For once, all the family were there to help her through it. Artur had returned a few days beforehand and Darni had thought against going out on the boat as the sea looked so horrendous, the large swells and crashing breakers. Thus, the family helped bring the smallest addition of the Vandemere family into the world. They named her Taima which means ‘crash of thunder’, a name they felt was apt considering the circumstances. A name especially apt once she opened her mouth and began to shriek the house down. Taima, thankfully, was as healthy as could be and managed to avoid most illnesses. Elspeth spent a great deal of time caring for the baby as Darni and Artur went away to work and Ridha tried to regain her strength. Elspeth was seventeen and told Taima all of their father’s stories and told her about the places she was going to see and the things she’d bring back as gifts.

When Elspeth was 25, her brother 28 and Taima was just about to turn seven, Artur became ill. He lost all of his strength and was bed bound. They all knew he had very little time left and endeavoured to make each minute count. After a few perfect days with his family, in the place he loved, Artur Vandemere died quietly in his sleep. His family were at a loss. Darni spent even more time with his new wife, Haida, and ignored his family. Taima was angry and hurt and began taking it out on their mother. Ridha was heartbroken. Elspeth felt she needed to keep everything together and get the family back into a stable position. She asked her sister in law to take Taima under her wing as Ridha grieved and Haida kindly took care of the child. Darni was earning for his own family and couldn’t keep both his household and theirs afloat. Thus, Elspeth took control of the Nootka VI, much to the annoyance of Darni and Kilno. However, as Elspeth had said, Darni had his own boat already and Kilno had no claim to the Vandemere vessel. The men argued that the boat should belong to them and that Elspeth didn’t understand what she was getting into but she tore their arguments to shreds. She made it clear that something needed to be done. Darni gave in, as he always did with his sisters, and Kilno demanded to work alongside Elspeth to keep an eye on her. Elspeth was unsure until her mother expressed her worry and then the young woman gave in. She was the captain of the Nootka VI, her family’s legacy and she would provide for her family, no matter the cost.

So begins...

Elspeth let out a heavy sigh as she placed her hands on her hips. Five more crates of the damn fabric...one more would be fine for the Villa of Winds, surely? There wasn't that much demand last time. The young captain wiped her forehead with the back of her sleeve before taking the heavy jacket off. She quietly cursed her uncle who wasn't present for this trip and couldn't carry the wares for her. Not that she couldn't carry it herself, oh no. She simply didn't want to carry it herself. Her uncle usually did the heavy lifting while she secured the boat and got their affairs in order with the dock master. However, her uncle was currently with her brother, repairing his little fishing boat and leaving Elspeth to do the run by herself. Not that she minded. However, the heavy lifting was starting to wear on her hands. She slipped on her leather gloves before lifting the last crate and carrying it out onto the deck. She then turned and locked up the hold, double checking that the lock was to hold. The young woman pushed her hair back as she checked the boat over one last time, testing the mooring lines again. Satisfied that the lines would hold, she pulled the last crate down to the wagon sitting on the dock. She had already hired out their usual horses and cart and was just finishing up before starting her journey. After securing the load, she turned and glanced back at her boat. The Nootka VI was a beauty, to be sure. Maybe not as big or well maintained as the other boats but beauty was in the eye of the beholder.

"I'll be back in a few hours, just a few hours." Elspeth muttered to herself, gathering up the reins of the horses and sitting on the small seat at the front of the wagon. With a quick snap of the ropes, the two horses were on their way, leaving the dock in their wake. Miles passed by slowly and Elspeth was growing bored of the journey. She quickly turned and recounted her stocks. Three crates of dried and preserved seafood, a few pieces of pottery, a crate of salted meat, furs, fabrics, two crates of metal ores and three crates of that damnable fabric. Plenty, surely, Elspeth mused. After all, there was some more in the hold on the ship and she intended to buy some more stock in the Villa of Winds. When she finally reached the place. The young woman sighed and stretched, a small yawn pushing past her lips. Now there were two reasons she missed her uncle. The heavy lifting and the company. Elspeth watched the scenery pass by as she was lulled by the constant hoof beats, acutely aware that she was travelling further and further away from the ocean and her beloved ship.

~~~
A few days passed as Elspeth slowly made her way to the Villa of Winds. When she finally reached the Villa, her relief and smatterings of joy for reaching the place turned to horror. The place had been decimated. Fairly recently if the fires and smoking buildings were anything to go by. Indeed, she must have just missed the attack. Her jaw dropped at the sight of it. Elspeth was not used to this kind of thing. Of course, she'd heard the stories but she hadn't realised the true severity of it. How could she? She was constantly moving from place to place, never staying more than a few days. But here she had wandered straight into the middle of a disastrous attack. She leapt down from the cart to get a better look. The horses whinnied fretfully, prompting the captain to try her hand at soothing the animals. Her blue eyes surveyed the scene, shock and horror reflected within their depths. She wanted to help but how? How could one trader do anything here? The initial panic in the area had died away and now there was an almost deathly quiet. Or was that just in her head? She wasn't sure. Elspeth watched as people rushed around, scrabbling in the ruins of buildings, possibly crying out names of loved ones. The captain didn't know how to help or what to do. Her uncle would know what to do, he always knew what do to in these situations. Elspeth was lost. Spotting a place to tie up the horses and the cart, she put the animals in a safe place where her stocks would hopefully not be raided.
She then shed her coat and run back into the Villa of Winds, determined to do something, anything to help.
Elspeth backed away from the wreckage, hands finding their way to her head to push hair from her sweaty forehead. She took a deep breath of air, eager to clear the lingering smoke from her lungs. The smoke, however, caught her throat and a coughing fit grabbed hold. She turned to the side and leant over, coughing into her palms. Her lungs burned and her throat ached but this pain was nothing compared to the hurt in her chest. They had only found dead bodies since she had arrived. It had become more of a recovery than a rescue. The young woman turned and looked out at the Villa of Winds. The fires were more under control, the heat ebbing away slowly. Elspeth had never wished to be at sea more in her life. The heat and licking flames made her yearn for the coolness and gentle bite of the sea spray.
She rubbed her hands on the front of her trousers, sooty marks appearing on the already heavily marked material. The small incisions she had collected on her palms protested at the motion and she ignored them. She was used to such niggling pain after all. Blue eyes looked out at the people of the Villa, people in mourning and pain. Not her suffering, she didn't feel their deep piercing grief. They were suffering. This was nothing she could help with or fix. Who was she, an outsider, to infringe on this suffering. She should just gather her wares and leave, head for the next stop on her rounds and write this venture off. But yet, she couldn't bring herself to leave just yet. She could still help. The young woman looked up into the night sky, subconsciously picking out the guiding stars she'd been taught to look out for since childhood. It was remarkably calming to know that in the midst of all the chaos, the stars still remained. Calming constellations, reassuring stars and the gentle face of the moon. The young woman's breathing evened out and for a few seconds, she could ignore the burning and suffering and pain that surrounded her. However, something caught Elspeth's attention.
A figure, running across the rooftops. Leaping and flying near the edge. Elspeth strained her eyes and more details began to emerge. Black, the figure wore black which seemed to...glow in the moonlight. The young woman hurried after the figure. This figure looked horribly suspicious. Who runs across the rooftops, dressed in black clothing with glowing material, in the wake of a massive attack? Perhaps it was an assassin, the perpetrator? Perhaps this was the attacker, running from the scene and watching the horrific mess they caused? She couldn't take any chances. This was something she could do. Elspeth looked around quickly and finds no one else looking at the figure. Everyone else is too busy grieving, attacking the fires or clawing through the rubble. The young woman pulled her hair behind her ears before running after the figure, her blue eyes narrowing.
"Hey! Stop!" She yelled, her voice crippled by the smoke and her coughing. She stops for a second, coughing the rest of the smoke out of her lungs. Afterwards, Elspeth sprinted down the street, dodging rubble and people. Seeing the flaws in her current plan, the captain becomes aware that she needs to get up on the roofs to keep up. She sees an empty cart sitting by a lower set building and climbs on top, stumbling a little. Regaining her balance on the rickety cart, Elspeth makes a leap to get on top of the small building roof. Pulling herself up onto the roof and swinging her legs up was a struggle as fatigue gripped her but she managed. The young woman pulled herself up onto her feet slowly, trying to balance herself again. After gaining some balance, she tore after the figure. Her eyes narrowed as she began to holler after the figure once more.
"You! Stop! Stop, right now!"
"I was once told a story as a child that a Demon fell in love with an Angel. The story ended with the Demon's soul becoming purified by the Angel's love and the two were able to live together as one... I know it was just a tale of fantasy, a children's bedtime story... but could such a concept truly become a reality?"
"You! Stop! Stop, right now!" A voice shouted behind her.
Linde had been so focused on moving forward she hadn't heard the first few shouts, but this one caught her attention. She skidded to a halt and spun on her heel to see another woman had come to the roof to chase her down. She was dirty, grimy, and had obviously spent some time fighting the fires an helping others. Linde had to silently respect her for that, but she also had to get to Cre' Est by the time the sun rose into the sky which meant she couldn't stop to chat.
"I'm not sure what you want of me, but I beg you to be quick about it. I must reach Cre' Est come sunup." She said, taking in the measure of the woman before her as she tried to gauge the woman's capabilities.
… Wait, what?
She found herself taking in every feature of the woman before her almost like she was sizing her up for a competition. Linde was not a naturally competitive person, so why was she doing this? Why did it suddenly feel like she was comparing herself to this woman? She guessed it was another side effect of the Heaven's Tears she'd received earlier. Something within its design must have increased the natural aggression within the recipient or something of that nature. It was a bit strange to Linde, feeling herself size up the woman before her as if preparing to judge her fighting prowess. Something though told her that even though the Heaven's Tears had enhanced her abilities, she should not take this woman lightly.
There was an air of authority and power about her, even if she was exhausted and covered in smokey grime.
Elspeth's eyes narrowed at the other woman's words. The captain took another step forward. She idly swiped at the black dust clinging to her face.
"Did you do this?" She spat, sounding enraged but keeping a tight lid on her temper. She spread her arm out, gesturing over to the Villa of Winds with the ruined buildings and fires. Her blue eyes examined the woman quickly. She seemed...normal. It was unusual. She had expected some super being of evil proportions. Not this young woman who looked fairly...normal. However, she had been taught not to judge a book by its cover. "Was this your work? Was this your fault?" Elspeth looked back at the ruined buildings. "People have died here. Livelihoods have been ruined or hurt by this. My livelihood has been damaged by this. And if you have had anything to do with it, then it is my duty as a decent person to bring you to justice."
The captain took another step forward until she and the other woman were closer. Her hand instinctively went for her work knife, bypassing the sharper, hunting knife for her more familiar tool. She didn't pull it out or threaten the other woman with it but it reassured her to know it that she had it at hand. She pushed back her hair, her eyes bright in the light of the moon. Her muscles were akin to coiled snakes, she was ready to fight back if it came to that point. She hoped it wouldn't, however, if this woman was responsible for this destruction then she would not blanch at attacking and subduing this young woman. But she would never kill, she would never allow that to happen. She pushed this to the back of her mind and met the other woman's eyes, her expression exuding determination. Elspeth smirked.
"Therefore, if you simply must get to Cre'Est by sun up, then you better not have been responsible for any of this."
Linde eyed the woman with caution.
She was well versed in self defense, but her training against a knife left something to be desired. She was not unaware of the woman's defensive posture nor the fact that she was preparing her weapon. Linde took in a breath, remaining calm and composed as she looked out at the destruction and walked towards the edge of the building.
"I had no hand in this… And in fact, before my current garb was acquired, my old clothing looked much like yours. My best friend lives here in the Villa, and almost lost her smithery to the fires and explosions. Out of fear, she has decided to move back to Cre' Est come the morrow." She responded sadly, recalling Chi's frightened expression as she made her way to her smithery earlier.
Linde turned and faced the woman before her, giving a small bow of her head.
"My name is Linde Xe' Almna, and I am the owner and founder of the Almna Apothecary in Cre' Est. My business in Cre' Est, and the reason I must return quickly, is to confront someone about what happened here and learn more about the truth behind the incident. If you seek justice on those who did this, then I suggest you come with me… Though, I'd advise keeping your hands away from your weapons around the one whom has ordered me to return come sunup." She warned as she turned back to face the way she had been running before.
She looked over her shoulder, checking to see if the woman would follow along.
Elspeth relaxed a little at the woman's words. This wasn't some kind of bloodthirsty assassin who was responsible for this madness. Her grip on the knife loosened a little but still encircled the weapon. She still didn't feel comfortable not keeping a hold on the knife.
"If you seek justice on those who did this, then I suggest you come with me… Though, I'd advise keeping your hands away from your weapons around the one whom has ordered me to return come sunup." Elspeth narrowed her eyes at this. Just who was this person? And just who was this one who was ordering her? As the other woman started to run off, Elspeth followed. She stumbled a little, tired and a little shaky. However, she wanted to know what had happened here, just what was going on. After all, it would solve a question and also would inform her trading route. If Cre'Est was becoming truly incredibly unstable, it would be best to know in advance.
"Just who is in charge here? And why would they have such a problem with my weapons?" She asked, her voice sceptical and slightly out of breath. "They're just knives after all, I use them for work." She added casually, her mind going back to her ship and wares for a moment. Her wares...Elspeth's eyes widened.
"If you need to get to Cre'Est before sun rise...I have horses." Elspeth offered. "I've got a cart full of stuff to barter and food too. Just in case you'd like some resources. I have a ship too...but that wouldn't exactly be very useful right now." Elspeth shrugged before giving the other woman a quick smirk. "Regardless, I have the resources if you require them."
"I was once told a story as a child that a Demon fell in love with an Angel. The story ended with the Demon's soul becoming purified by the Angel's love and the two were able to live together as one... I know it was just a tale of fantasy, a children's bedtime story... but could such a concept truly become a reality?"
Linde waited until the woman was done speaking about her horses and resources before answering her previous inquiries.
"The horses would be a good idea. Cre' Est is several hours away, and sunrise is closing in. If the horses are fresh, or at least rested, then let's go ahead and take them back." She replied.
Ahead Linde saw a gap between roofs which was about twelve feet or so, and for a brief instant she was almost reluctant to take the leap. However, at her current speed, something told her that she'd be fine. She continued to run, and as she came to the gap the ball of her right foot touched the corner and launched her body over the gap as easily as if it were but two feet. She landed softly on the other side, her strange armor making a slightly muffled clinking sound before she stood up and double checked that the other woman was keeping up. How she'd handle the gap was anyone's guess, as the gap was quite the large one for those not used to rooftops in general, which normally included Linde.
"And as to the one who has ordered I return to Cre' Est by sunup… Let's just say you know him, but have never met him. If you have a ship then you've likely heard hundreds of people speak of him and his exploits across this continent over the past several years." She said as she turned and continued onward, but at a slightly slower pace.
"Go ahead and take the lead. I'll follow you to your horses."
Elspeth watched as Linde leapt across the gap. She stopped dead at the edge of the building, giving the young woman an incredulous look.
"How did you...That shouldn't be possible..." Elspeth said quietly before shaking it off. She was already in an unbelievable circumstance. This could easily be explained. Somehow. The captain shook her head quickly before propelling herself off the edge of the building. She landed on the ground with a soft thump, in a crouched position. She then scaled a lower building to the side before taking a short jump onto the structure the other woman had jumped onto.
"Anyway...how can I know him if I've never met him? It doesn't make much sense." Elspeth replied, shrugging her shoulders. She then started to lead Linde back to her horses. "As well as that, most of what people tell me on my travels are little more than fairy tales. Stories of demons and assassins and all kinds of nonsense. I usually just concentrate on the requested stocks more than the idle chatter." The young woman reached another gap but instead of jumping, she once again jumped down, landing in a controlled crouch. She then turned and gave Linde a quick smile.
"I'm Elspeth Vandemere, by the way. Come along, the horses are just round the back." She darted off behind another building. "Hurry up! Apparently, we have a strict schedule to keep to!"
((I decided to fast track a little, but feel free to detail what Elspeth would have done in each segment as if Linde had given her time to do so))
Linde followed the woman named Elspeth closely, and as Elspeth leaped down from the building to the ground Linde leaped off the building's edge and landed nearby. A smooth transition if she did say so herself, landing on the balls of her feet and absorbing the impact as she stood up and kept behind her new companion.
"Oh believe me, you'll understand once you see him face to face. You likely will think I'm mad for taking orders from such a man, but he'll explain things to you so long as you don't draw a weapon on him. If you do, you'll be dead before you ever get it out of its sheath." Linde warned.
After seeing how the Demon effortlessly dealt with Mar'ko during their encounter, she felt it a good idea to keep Elspeth from suffering the same fate. The Demon had been taking it easy on Mar'ko, but there'd be no telling how he'd handle treating a woman who was not supposed to be there. Elspeth was a tough, serious woman from what Linde could tell thus far. She had a sense of humor as well, as proven by her final remark. Linde smirked and kept pace, rounding the corner ahead and finding the horses right where Elspeth said they'd be. Linde hopped on the horse Elspeth pointed her to and with that she led them down the path to Cre' Est.
There wasn't that much talking along the way. A few hours of horseback riding saw Cre' Est appear on the horizon as the first rays of the sun were beginning to peek over the horizon in the distance. They still had about fifteen minutes before the sun would show itself, but still Linde was taking no chances. She led the horses about a half mile away from the eastern gate, hopping off and tying it to a tree before waiting for Elspeth to do the same. Once she was on the ground, Linde nodded and brought her to the gate where she used her ID to get them passed the guards who were on a more strict means of passage and acceptance apparently.
Something had taken place inside the city, or so the two women were told, and that spoke ill of what likely awaited them ahead.
Linde led Elspeth into the city streets, and asked her to follow her to the rooftops so they could search for some sign of the one Linde spoke of. Linde saw a pathway to the rooftops in the form of a single empty cart that was usually drawn by horses. She bounded off of it and grabbed a windowsill before hauling herself up and jumping off the sill to the adjacent building, landing against the wall and then bounding off of it to grab the edge of the rooftop and hoisting herself up to get a better view of her surroundings. Linde had done such leaping for training when she was young, and her new heightened abilities made it all the easier to do effectively. It was almost invigorating.
The sun finally began to peek over the edge of the city and show its face to the world as Linde spied the one she was waiting on. He was on the roof of the church not far away, leaning against the dark side of the cross to stay in the shadows. But she was able to see him clear as day, and as Elspeth joined her on the rooftop she jerked her head in the direction of their mark and led her across the joined rooftops to the church. As they approached, the man waiting there turned his head and looked in their direction, eyes of glowing crimson burning through the darkness surrounding him and landing squarely on Elspeth...
Elspeth cursed Linde's superhuman leaping abilities as she struggled to hoist herself up onto the rooftops. Never had she felt so unfit than when she was trailing after this inhuman athletic prodigy. And why on earth did it always have to be the rooftops? Why couldn't they use the street? Was this really so necessary? The captain grumbled as she pulled herself up onto her feet and swiped at the dirt clinging to her clothing. She sorted out her coat before chasing after her new companion. She had no idea why she was following this mysterious person or why she was even taking anything to do with all this insanity. She was just a trader. She bought, sold and sailed. This was so out of her comfort zone, it was ridiculous. Elspeth grumbled under her breath as she tried to stop from falling, the ledges catching the edges of her boots. She stumbled a little, falling to one knee before looking up in time to see Linde nod towards a church and off she went yet again. The young woman followed her footsteps, mindful of the tiles and catches that were trying to trip her up.
As they got closer to the church, two red orbs appeared from the shadows surrounding the cross. Fear instantly gripped Elspeth and her stomach churned.
"Oh." Elspeth breathed, she now understood what Linde was talking about before. She did know of this person. She knew of him very well. She might have ignored most of the tales being told but everyone knew of the Red Eyed Demon. And who else could this figure be? Those unearthly red eyes stared out of the darkness, fixing themselves on her. Uneasiness and fear surged. Elspeth's hand instantly went to grab her knife but, remembering Linde's warning, she caught herself. Her defensive posture did not change however, although she made sure to keep her hands in plain sight. She slowly turned her hands, showing empty palms as she stared straight back at the red eyes. A slow smirk worked it's way onto her face despite the panic rising in her chest and the fear biting at her mind. She did as she always did and masked the swirling emotions that raged. The impulse to run away and never deviate from her trade route ever again was incredibly strong as she smirked, blue eyes glinting, hard as flint. A smirk hid most of this or at least, she hoped it did.
"Well. Now I owe my dear uncle a silver piece. You have the red eyes and everything." Elspeth grinned before turning to Linde. "As you said, I do believe you are quite mad." The captain then turned back to the assassin in the shadows and awaited his response. His response would dictate her next action, after all. She just hoped she wouldn't be dead by the end of the exchange.
"I was once told a story as a child that a Demon fell in love with an Angel. The story ended with the Demon's soul becoming purified by the Angel's love and the two were able to live together as one... I know it was just a tale of fantasy, a children's bedtime story... but could such a concept truly become a reality?"
The churning, glowing red eyes fixated on Elspeth.
Linde looked at the two red spheres for a moment and then walked forward cautiously. She walked to within about three paces, and then the red eyes darted in her direction landing squarely on her own. She stopped instantly, knowing full well not to push her limits. He was the one in charge. He set the pace. He set the tone. He set the rules. His comfort zone was now her comfort zone, and she would have to follow his lead.
"This is Elspeth Vandemere, a trader. She seeks answers to the tragedy of the Villa of Winds and accompanied me here to see you in hopes of finding answers and justice for those who perished in the ensuing chaos." She said slowly.
The red eyes slowly trailed over to Elspeth's before the figure of the Demon stood up straight and walked into the moonlight.
His tall frame became illuminated in the same slightly glowing translucent green armor with a solid black core that Linde was now wearing over her forearms, chest and shins. The Demon had a heart guard over his left pectoral and part of his ribcage, one vambrace on each arm, a greave over each leg, even his belt buckle was made of the material. It was not visible behind his thick jacket, but there was armor covering his back as well. The Demon's outfit was made of an incredibly dense material that did not see to reflect any light at all, and the fibers of which were much thicker than those of normal clothing. It was an odd look to most, but to anyone with knowledge of the ancient ways, the outfit was quite menacing.
The Demon's face was youthful and handsome despite his fearsome reputation, no signs of facial hair at all nor any scars to mar what was there. Linde guessed that his lacking of facial hair was genetic, for there were no signs of him having had to shave at all. His eyebrows were not overly thick, but they were full as they arched evenly across his brow. His neck was one of the few areas of visible flesh besides his face, and it was full and muscular with hints of the beginnings of scars near the base of his collar bone. As he came forward and stopped about three paces from Elspeth, he examined her from head to toe before walking a circle around her. His examination culminated in his return to his original position and crossing his arms in front of his chest as his eyes slid to Linde.
"Do you trust this woman?" He asked, though it sounded more like a demand.
Linde only nodded, letting the Demon return his gaze forward to Elspeth.
"You say you seek answers and justice for what has been done." He said, tilting his head ever so slightly to the side.
"You do realize that your enemy is not one you can successfully fight, do you not?" He asked.
Elspeth watched as the Demon circled round her, her posture defensive and muscles tight. Her hazel streaked blue eyes followed the assassin as he examined her from head to toe. Her eyes moved over to Linde occasionally, as if seeking that she is still there. Reassured for some reason that the other woman was still there, she was then able to mean the Demon's cold gaze. A cold blue met the unearthly red.
"You say you seek answers and justice for what has been done." The Demon spoke to her directly for the first time. She cleared her throat carefully before answering.
"Indeed. It is more than idle curiosity. Incidents like this could easily jeopardise my business and family." Elspeth said quickly, feeling the need to justify herself to the two people. She fidgeted a little underneath the red gaze, flicking her hair over her shoulder.
"You do realize that your enemy is not one you can successfully fight, do you not?" Elspeth smirked at this. She chuckled lowly, her eyes glimmering as she looked slowly from Linde to the Demon.
"I understand this...however, I am not adverse to a little hard graft and training. Although I may not be able to fight this enemy right now, in time, we might have a different story." Elspeth smirks, her fingertips dragging across the hilts of her knives.
"I understand this...however, I am not adverse to a little hard graft and training. Although I may not be able to fight this enemy right now, in time, we might have a different story."
The Demon's eyes trailed over to Linde, who looked at him with a somewhat apologetic smile and the slightest of shrugs from her shoulders.
The Demon looked back to Elspeth and then cast his gaze to the tower of the church which he had previously been leaning on. He placed his hand on it, arm completely straight. His back was straight, his legs straight, he was standing tall like a guardian statue. From this posture, generating power should be nigh impossible save for a few small bits to push against something, but as the Demon's eyes narrowed slightly, a cracking sound began to echo out into the morning air. The section of the stone church tower under the Demon's hand began to slowly crack as a small indentation was begin created beneath it. The cracks continued to expand, inch by inch, until the Demon's eyes opened slightly and his hand broke completely through the wall of the church tower creating a circular hole through to the inside stairway. The Demon then opened his hand, still inside the new opening he'd created, and extended his finger all the way out so that the back of his hand pressed against the inside of the wall. He pulled back, slowly at first, again creating a cracking and splintering sound as wood and stone were stretched to their breaking point.
With one final pull, a large section of the wall came undone and fell towards the Demon and landed at his feet. The new opening was approximately four feet tall by three feet wide, and all from a standing position where power should not be capable of being generated.
The Demon looked to Elspeth and crossed his arms in front of his chest.
"This is not something you can just train to fight against my dear." He said, almost as if deliberately trying to demoralize her.
"… That is not to say that the fight isn't within your grasp, but it will require something which you must be prepared to lay down your life for." He said, taking out a small vial of clear blue liquid.
Linde looked nervously at the vial, almost as if she was frightened of it.
"This, Elspeth, is known as Heaven's Tears. It's a concoction created by Te'i Sai over thousands of years of study and medical perfection. This single vial is enough to utterly destroy your body's current limitations and neutralize the neurochemical restrictions your brain places on your muscular structure. With this single vial, you too could do what I have just done with ease." He said as he pulled the vial closer to him.
"Know this Elspeth… The Heaven's Tears do not come without great risk. It will react adversely to even the slightest hint of an emotion present in your mind. The more you feel, the more pain you will experience as your body slowly changes within the confines of your skin. Linde can testify to this, as can the now deceased archer Mar'ko who also made an attempt at tasting of its remedy for the purpose of fighting back against those who struck out against the Villa of Winds. If you choose to accept this vial from me, then you will be subjecting yourself to pain the likes of which you have never known, nor will ever experience again." He said, holding the vial out in the palm of his right hand.
"You have two choices if you accept and ingest this vial: gain capabilities similar to those of Linde, or death." He said calmly.
"...Wow." Elspeth blinked a few times before pushing back her hair and letting out a drawn out exhale. "Alright...Ok. That's...something. Interesting, I must admit. I..." Elspeth trailed off and closed her eyes. She lets out another slow hiss before nodding slowly. "Right. Heaven's Tears. A large chance of death, almost super human capabilities. Sounds like an....interesting thing to attempt." She nodded slowly, mulling everything over.
She had her family to think of. If she took this vial of mad substance, she'd either die a most likely horrible death or be a superhuman like Linde or the Demon himself. Elspeth peeks over at the edge and into the massive show of strength that had previously been shown. It seemed so...amazing. She wanted to do these things too. She wanted that strength, that amazing power and the otherworldliness. It was a great risk but the taste of adventure sat on her tongue like a sweet wine and dulled the sense of panic. It was an adventure, a trip into the unknown and it was so impossible to turn down. A slow steady smirk wormed it's way onto her face.
"I've dealt with storms, gales, and hurricanes hitting me square on the face. I've cut myself on my knives more times than I can could. Damnation, I've set myself on fire once before. What's in a little vial?" Elspeth laughed, her eyes glinting, reflecting the fear layered with excitement. The utter panic coupled with intrigue. "Well then? What are we waiting for?"
"I was once told a story as a child that a Demon fell in love with an Angel. The story ended with the Demon's soul becoming purified by the Angel's love and the two were able to live together as one... I know it was just a tale of fantasy, a children's bedtime story... but could such a concept truly become a reality?"
The Demon walked forward and placed the vial of clear blue liquid into Elspeth's hand and backed away. He looked to Linde, who looked very nervous, and then looked back to Elspeth.
"Very well then, once you ingest that vial, there's no turning back." He said as he sat down cross legged with his arms crossed in front of his chest.
"Your bodies will begin changing inside within minutes of your taking it. First, you will experience nothing for approximately fifteen minutes. During that time, you must empty your mind and clear yourself of all emotion or memories. Let it become blank, clear like water, letting nothing take hold except for emptiness. Once your fifteen minutes are up, you will slowly become nauseous due to chemical reactions in the brain undergoing very serous and radical changes in preparation to begin the process of negating your neurochemical restrictions on your body's musculature. Nausea will very likely be followed by the feeling of having to empty your stomach, but you must resist that to the best of your ability. If you allow yourself to vomit, you will lose the Heaven's Tears and endure the lingering after effects for nothing."
He closed his eyes for a few moments.
"Following that sickening feeling in your stomach will come migraines the likes of which you've never experienced before. Your head will feel like it's literally being pried apart millimeter by millimeter as the chemical changes in your brain slowly begin to come into their final stages. Once they are finished, which takes about ten agonizing minutes, you will again be overcome by nausea and your muscles will begin to ache. At first, the aches in your muscles will be a welcome relief from the pain in your skull, but given about two to three minutes of time longer the musculature of your body will burn and begin to spasm as they are flooded with the new signals released by the brain. You will likely feel like you have been overtaken by some external force without any control over what your body is doing, but this is normal. Should none of this overwhelm your mind, the pain subsides after approximately ten more minutes."
He opened his eyes.
"As I warned you already, the Heaven's Tears are known to react negatively to specific types of mental stimuli. Should your mind at any time during the initial process be exposed to emotions such as anger, sadness, joy, or regret, the pain will increase dramatically which will inevitably lead to a neurological shut down which will become the cause of your death like it was for Mar'ko. Should the pain trigger emotions within you, any at all, then the pain will only continue to get worse. The more you feel, the more you will suffer until you perish under the weight of your own emotions."
At that moment, Linde stepped forward.
"Good luck Elspeth… I'm afraid that's all I can say to you regarding this matter." She said as she too prepared for what Elspeth was about to do.
Elspeth offered the two a slightly shaky smile before swirling the vial slightly. She was almost transfixed by the blue liquid until she let out a shaky smile.
"Well, makes no sense drawing this out any further. Slante." Elspeth almost laughed at the phrase. In her village, it was used when someone took a drink and meant 'good health'. She felt like it was horribly ironic. However, she didn't dwell on it for long as she drank the Heaven's Tears in a single gulp. She let out a soft sigh as she handed the glass vial back.
"Probably for the best if I am not holding this when the next bit happens..." Elspeth muttered, breathing deeply. She aimed to clear her mind, like the Demon said. She thought of a calm clear ocean, letting fear and panic slip away. Elspeth slowly lowered herself to sit cross legged on the roof top. She willed her mind to imitate a calm sea, one just after a storm. When thoughts or emotions sprang up, she washed them away, leaving a calm cool emptiness. It was like washing away debris after a storm. This carried on for a few minutes until she felt a horrible urge to vomit. Biting her tongue hard, she distracted herself with the pain and pushed the urge down. The feeling swirled and surged as the faint coppery tang of blood filled her mouth. She didn't trust herself not to throw up if she let go of the bleeding flesh thus, she carried on digging her teeth into her tongue. She remained sitting, leaning over onto her knees and her head bowed. She didn't want to see the looks on the others' faces. They had probably dealt with this a lot better than she had. After all, Linde seemed to be superhuman and the Demon...was the Red Eyed Demon. Who was she? A stupid little trader who had no experience with any of this nonsense. She spat out a mouthful of blood, not wanting to tempt her churning stomach by giving it something else to rebel against. She quickly swiped the remnants from her chin, her blue eyes focusing on the wet stain on the roof top ahead of her. Elspeth began to focus on that, letting nothing else take hold of her mind as she focussed on that one small speck of blood.
Then, her stomach began to calm and her head began to ache. The young woman's fingers weaved through her hair until they were flat against her skull. She took a slow inhale as the pain slowly began to worm it's way into her skull. It settled there and manifested into a flaming beast that tore through her skull. It pulled its flaming claws across her brain and left huge gaping sores. A strangled gasping plea forced its way past her lips as Elspeth curled herself up further. Her nails dug into her skull, an instinct urging her to remove the pain inside her head by clawing through the flesh. The captain bit into her tongue again, blood oozing down her chin as she stopped herself from crying out in agony. Tears rolled down her face as her skull burned and the hell beast tore gashes into her brain. The young woman sobbed and shook her head rapidly as if trying to dislodge someone's grip on her head. A particularly vicious jab along her skull led the young woman to let out a scream. The only presence of mind she had left told her she had to be quiet and so she moved her fist to her mouth and bit hard on the knuckle, muffling her screams. After minutes that dragged by like years, the migraine slowly subsided and Elspeth shakily swiped the red sticky blood from her jaw.
The nausea kicked in once more, her stomach threatening to eject itself once more. Now that the agony that was the migraine had ceased, she could concentrate on not loosing the Heaven's Tears. Her ribs ached as she threatened to throw up for what seemed the hundredth time. Elspeth pulled back and kept it together, her fingers still clutched to her forehead. Slowly, Elspeth's body began to ache and she shifted uncomfortably. She looked up briefly, certain she looked a gory mess.
"Now for the grand finale, right?" She half whispered, her voice slurred and hoarse from her muffled screaming before. She shifted again, the ache slowly increasing. "This is it." She closed her eyes, huddled in her curled up position and waited for hell to hit.
"I was once told a story as a child that a Demon fell in love with an Angel. The story ended with the Demon's soul becoming purified by the Angel's love and the two were able to live together as one... I know it was just a tale of fantasy, a children's bedtime story... but could such a concept truly become a reality?"
Linde watched calmly, but sadly as Elspeth put up with the nausea and the migraine as they began to take hold. The poor woman's writhing and convulsing in pain as she seemed almost to be trying to claw her way into her own skull made Linde rather nervous. Her eyes looked to the Demon at her side, who was watching without emotion and his arms still crossed in front of his chest. There was never any emotion in this one, let alone any kind of concern for the woman's well being. She had to wonder if he had simply stared at her in such a manner when she had undergone the internal transformation.
As Elspeth began to calm herself, Linde knew the worst was yet to come.
"Now for the grand finale, right?… This is it."" She said.
Linde could take it no longer. She took out a rag from the pouch at her back and came forward, cradling Elspeth's head in her hand as she wiped the blood from her mouth and jaw. She had a minute or two before the muscular agony would take hold, and though this was easily the most painful of the effects, it was also in a strange way the most bearable since it didn't cause any nausea or secondary effects which could cause further harm to Elspeth's ability to resist. Still, pain tolerance was not something anyone could hope to pit against what was about to come. Elspeth's tears would likely flow like rivers once this section started, as had Linde's own. She remembered the pain in her own mind, forcing it back as she gently laid Elspeth's head down to the ground and gave her two rags to clench in-between her hands to stop from slicing her palms open.
Linde then stepped back and waited, letting Elspeth sit quietly where she lay to await her fate.
Elspeth's brow furrowed as Linde wiped the blood off her face. She gave the other woman a questioning look as two rags were handed over. The captain put one in each palm and gave a tight squeeze, double checking she wasn't going to cut herself in that way. Satisfied with that, Elspeth sat with her fist against her mouth. Her muscles were beginning to ache and burn and she knew that the worst was right around the corner. She pushed away the fear and panic that was beginning to well up again with another mental wave. It soared over the emotions and washed them away just as her arm started to spasm a little. A little burst here and there, starting in the left and then the right. It was fairly numb and painless until a searing pain wrapped itself round her arm and slowly crawled up her arms. Elspeth let out a shuddering gasping wail as tears began to fall once more. She resisted the urge to scratch at her arms and dislodge whatever was running its razor claws down her arms repeatedly. The young woman couldn't help but let out soft keening noises as the pain travelled around to encompass her neck. She flinched violently at this as the burning, clawing pain slowing pulled its claws down her back. Tears were running down Elspeth's face in floods by this point, her limbs twitching and jerking. The captain bit into her fist hard, attempting to keep her screams from bursting past her lips. Slowly the pain wrapped itself round to Elspeth's stomach and she couldn't help but let out a scream, a scream that was interrupted by heavy sobs. Blood started to dribble down her fist as she bit into the flesh hard in an attempt to keep quiet. The effects of the Heaven's Tears slowly engulfed her entire body and the horrific pain grabbed hold. Elspeth couldn't even scream, her lungs felt as if they were on fire, burning her insides each time she dared to take another breath. It was taking all of her strength not to just give in. She wanted to so dearly, just faint and let it all go away but she knew then she would be dead and not yet.
The cold burn chased after the pain that felt like the bite of a thousand knives and then the roaring raging burn after that. Elspeth let out gasping silent sobs, her voice not willing to respond. She wanted to scream and scream and get someone to help, anyone. Minute after minute passed and the tearing ripping pain was running rampant through Elsepth's body, the body that was twitching uncontrollably and writhing madly.
Until it wasn't. Her muscles calmed themselves. The pain washed away like sea spray. Elspeth sat there, the relief washing over her like a tidal wave. She stayed silent for a few minutes, ignoring everything that was going on around her. The feeling of peace was...like nothing she'd ever felt before. It was like being filled from head to toe with light. She felt as if she could float, after all the weight of pain and suffering, she felt as light as the wind itself.
A small smirk found it's way back onto her face. She opened her eyes slowly, a loose tear or two falling down her face. A hysterical laugh bubbled in her chest and Elspeth didn't have the strength to repress it. A short string of giggles fell from her lips before she looked up at Linde and the Red Eyed Demon, her eyes bright. She wiped her face quickly before leaning back onto her hands.
"Well then. You weren't kidding about the whole 'agonising' business, were you?" Elspeth smirked before laughing once again, the peace and calm making her light headed. The captain dried her tears with the sleeve of her jacket before looking back up at the others, a smile in place. Tiredness was almost all consuming and it was starting to show. Elspeth's eyes drooped and she leaned heavily against a nearby chimney. Her smile was more fatigued than anything else but the relief was still there, clear as day. "Now what?"
After the Heaven's Tears, Elspeth couldn't remember very much. She was aware that she had spoken a little and then, apparently, the Red Eyed Demon had lifted her but that had to be a ridiculous half delirious hallucination. He couldn't have done that. Regardless, the hazy half formed memory was still there. Elspeth's eyes fluttered as she slowly worked feeling back into her limbs. Her fingers curled and dug into the mattress as she tried to wake up completely. The young woman frowned a little as a lingering pain emitted from her tongue and little pin pricks of discomfort encircled her head. She must have done more damage than she had thought. She shifted quietly to probe her head slightly, hissing at the gouges she had left from earlier. She then let her hands drop to her sides once more.
Feeling that she should wake up properly for one reason or another, Elspeth pulled her eyelids open and lazily looked around the room. She noticed a whole load of odd things in the room but couldn't find the energy to care about them very much. The young woman yawned loudly, her eyes sliding shut again. She pulled her eyes open again, struggling against the urge to curl up and sleep for a week. Her eyes fell on the two figures in the room and a soft sleepy smile slowly appeared on her face.
"Am I the only one who is ridiculously tired?" Elspeth joked, rubbing her eyes gently.
"I was once told a story as a child that a Demon fell in love with an Angel. The story ended with the Demon's soul becoming purified by the Angel's love and the two were able to live together as one... I know it was just a tale of fantasy, a children's bedtime story... but could such a concept truly become a reality?"
"Am I the only one who is ridiculously tired?" Elspeth asked.
Linde turned to look at her new companion and gave a soft hearted smile.
The Red-Eyed Demon, however, stood up and frowned at her.
"Sarcasm does for us nothing. Find the strength to sit up and take those pills on the plate and prepare to join us here on the training floor. If the two of you are to fight this battle, you must learn to step inside the minds of the Assassins of both Te'i Sai and Roda Ah K'mht."
Linde was a little perplexed as to why the Demon would mention Te'i Sai, his own organization as if it was part of their fight. As far as she knew, he was the crown jewel of Te'i Sai, its prized operative and most dangerous by far. Why would he be talking about his own organization as if it too was part of the threat… Unless it was. Was it? Could the Red-Eyed Demon's own organization be also at fault for what happened in some twisted way? The Demon didn't strike her as one to target someone or something without a good reason. So what was going on?
