Shane fits the typical appearance of your high school jock: attractive, fit, and muscular. Brunette locks with dangerous, dark blue eyes make him a dreamboat among females of Astoria High. A chiseled jawline with a light dusting of facial hair does little to hide the smirk that regularly graces his face. You'll find he is very meticulous about his appearance. Unless he's just getting out of football practice (the few times he allows himself to look unkept), Shane has his hair styled and tends to pick at his hair in order to get it just right. His style is very modern and on trend, the latest styles and quality material. Shane stands out wherever he goes, his appearance only playing a minor role.
STRENGTHSXX
XX➥ Athleticism : Years of playing football has built up Shane's strength, endurance, and speed. It's a big help on the field and a bigger help on the streets. He may be the rich kid, but he can hold his own in a fight.
XX➥ Trustworthy : A surprising quality, Shane can be trusted with secrets and promises. He'll never make one he can't keep, but he tries to do his best by those who trust him.
XX➥ Perseverance : Getting through hard times has been Shane Black's way of life. He's used to it and knows the only way to escape the pain is to keep going.
WEAKNESSES
XX ➥ Hot-Headed : A part of Shane has always been easily angered. When someone starts to piss him, he can't control his anger. Shane lashes out and has gotten into fights which the school overlooks due to his father and football. He doesn't think and just acts.
XX➥ Insensitive : Shane likes to claim he's realistic, but he's never mastered the social grace of 'softening the blow.' He doesn't care how his words may effect you. He grew up with the harsh truth so others should be able to handle it.
XX➥ Paranoid : All his life, Shane has been used by everyone around him. With the recent kidnapping and murders, he is even more suspicious of those around. He can't trust anyone.
FEARSXX
XX➥ Physical Injuries : Injuries are an athlete's biggest fear and Shane knows if he gets hurt bad enough, his football career and his ticket out of Astoria is gone.
XX ➥ His Secrets : Shane has many skeletons in his closet. If any of them were to be found out, his life would be over.
XX➥ Going to Jail : Despite not being the killer/kidnapper, the evidence against Shane has continually gotten bigger. There isn't enough to build a solid case, but everything looks very suspicious.
SECRETS
XX ➥ Sexuality : Football and homosexuality do not mix, especially since they're the targets of the bullies on the football team. Besides losing football and possibly his future, it's a secret Shane doesn't want getting out.
XX➥ Motive : Each victim has, or had, something on Shane that could potentially destroy his life. Some of them have been uncovered, but the darker ones have yet to be discovered.
XX➥ Intermittent explosive disorder : Also known as IED, Shane has had the disorder since he was ten. He has episodes where he blows up in anger at people and will become physically violent to others and property. He's taking medication and going to therapy, but it's not completely controlled.
XX➥ The Accident : After the party where Evan was taken, Shane was drinking and driving with a friend. He didn't notice he was in the wrong lane until it was too late. Instead of stopping and helping, Shane sped off. He found out later he killed a young couple and crippled their seven year old daughter. Shane's family has adopted the girl since she had no other family and as a way to hide Shane's involvement. The guilt kills him everyday, but if the secret got out his life would be over.
PERSONALITYXXX To those who don't know him, Shane is a grade A jerk. He doesn't outwardly care how his words and actions affect those around him. He'll use satire and sarcasm to get a laugh, not bothering to think about how it may make others feel. Shane is constantly getting into fights and verbally abusing those who eye him the wrong way. Shane is viewed as harsh, easily angered, and mostly likely to end up in jail.
Despite him being all these things, Shane has a decent side to him. His humor may be rough if you're the target, but he is actually very humorous. He actually doesn't need ridicule to make people laugh. His one-liners are legendary among his circle of friends. Shane is regarded as one of the most trustworthy and direct of his group of friends. When people need someone to be straightforward about their problem, Shane is the first person they go to. He never makes a promise he can't keep and won't lie outright unless he has something to lose from it. He may be a jerk, but he makes a loyal friend.
He may not show it, but he does care about other people. Shane will never admit he's done something nice for another person, but he takes care of those who matter to him, with small acts of kindness or anonymous gestures. If one of his teammates is struggling with money, he'll pay it off or slip them some cash unnoticed. If his bully friends are bothering a weaker student, he'll attempt to draw them away from the student without outwardly stopping them. He does have a reputation to maintain. Shane knows he isn't a good person, but he tries to atone for his faults.
Despite being surrounded by friends and high on the social hierarchy, Shane has always felt isolated from other people. He can count the amount of people whom he trusts on one hand, and isn't willing to add any more. Pessimism crept into him at any early age. His experiences with his family showed him that people see him as a trophy. People like to claim they're friends with Shane or have hooked up with the star football player when they've never spoken two words to him. People have always selfish to Shane so he doesn't see the point in believing in people anymore.
HISTORYXXX Only son to Warren Black and Olivia Fields née Black, Shane was destined for a privileged life. Both from Astoria, Shane's parents were close friends in high school, drawn together by their ambition. Warren dreamed of becoming an accomplished lawyer while Olivia planned to become a prominent doctor. They accomplished their goals and moved back to Astoria, knowing it'd be easy to become influential in a small town. Their marriage was more of a business arrangement than romantic feelings. People thought it odd the two weren't married and the two of them made a fine couple. It wasn't until a few years into the marriage they decided to have a baby, to create a façade of the perfect family.
Raised mostly by his nanny, Layla, Shane's parents spent little time with him besides checking on his academic and athletic achievements. Layla did her best to act like a parent to Shane and did become a surrogate mother, but she still wasn't his mom. He began to act out, lashing out and acting like the spoiled rich boy. Shane had to be tested because of how often he got into physical altercations. He was found to have Intermittent explosive disorder, which is a behavioral disorder characterized by explosive outbursts of anger and violence. His parents have kept that bit of information off of his file, but he must go to weekly counseling and take medication. The doctors suggested finding an outlet for Shane with any excess aggression which turned him towards football. He was quite good and the coaches bragged to his parents that with more training, Shane could have a career in football. It pleased his parents to hear that.
Within two years, Shane was getting better at managing his anger and found solace in football. His parents thought it was time for him to grow up so they fired Layla, ignoring her attempts to warn them that Shane was not completely stable. Layla keeps in touch with Shane through phone calls and the occasional visit. However, her dismal caused a hole in Shane to grow. He tried to fill it with parties, girls, and crazy shenanigans which was easy to get involved in due to his reputation as the star football player. His attraction to men was quickly hidden out when his teammates made an effort to bully the gay students at school.
Life was normal for Shane until the night of Evan Lynn's disappearance. Shane committed a hit-n-run which he instantly told his folks about. They may not have cared for him unless he was succeeding, but they would always clean up any mess he made. His father, the district attorney, saw to it that the accident couldn't be connected back to Shane and his mother did the same when the victims were brought to the hospital. The little girl, Maya, was the only survivor and since newly crippled girl had no family to go back to, the Blacks took her in. For Shane's parents, it was a way to hide Shane's involvement and positive publicity for Shane's father who was rerunning for District Attorney. The guilt kills Shane, but he tries to make it up by being there for Maya. The girl has become a sister to him in such a short time. It adds even more guilt to him, but he can't confess.
The disappearances didn't mean much to Shane at first until he was brought in for questioning. He didn't understand, but when the police mentioned all the names of the teenagers missing, Shane knew why he was the suspect. All the teenagers were a threat to Shane's future. Some of them knew things about him or had something over him. Shane wasn't the kidnapper/killer, but he did have motive. The police didn't have enough to hold him on and his father claimed the evidence circumstantial at best. It wasn't until the police found the body of Scarlett Fulton, Shane's girlfriend, that they had any solid evidence. Shane hasn't been forthcoming with the police about the night he last saw Scarlett and the cops are determined to pin this on him.
