It is a curious thing, how I see beauty in death rather than life.
The stillness of a body,
skin translucent with colorful veins seemingly floating to the surface.
The whisper of a last breath,
the vivid red of blood like roses pooling around them.
Yes, death is beautiful.

Or perhaps I am simply jealous?

ImageAs children we romanticized the idea of magic; making moving pictures painted with beautiful fairies and exquisite beings influenced by the colorful illustrations depicted in history books. Witches were wicked, they said, wizards would enchant girls into falling in love with them and then eat their hearts. The movies twisted these stories, selling the idea that with a few magic words and the wave of a wand, one could change their fate entirely. Such ideas weren't foreign, the wealthy had always had the resources to pour their efforts into searching for spells that could grant eternal life or cure ailments that the poor suffered from day in day out. Witches they called them and the old families suffered, burning at the stake, at the hands of the very ones who had so romanticized the idea off magic. In order to protect themselves, the wealthy hid their abilities. They used their magic in only the most subtle of ways to keep themselves in power, passing down their secrets from generation to generation. They lived in constant fear of being discovered and persecuted and so, using their influence, they built a wall to separate the wealthy from the common people.

Image

ImageWhat became of the rest of humanity? Without the use of spells to keep them youthful, they used technology and science, developing medicines that were regulated by the government and using the internet for just about everything. They made strides in their advancements, protecting their territories with large robots that could be operated via a pair of humans. The more advanced they grew, the less of a need for magic there was. People once more, began to fear magic, they thought witches to be demons hiding in the bodies of their loved ones. After all, their abilities had no place in this world. Their very existence became illegal. In some cases, they were seen as sick and in need of healing. Others saw them as nothing more than trophies that could be exchanged for necessary resources. As the world continued down the road of supposed advancement; those with the old gifts of magic continued to hide in plain sight, disguising themselves as normal humans. To prove that they were not evil, that magic was not to be feared, one girl took upon the burden of taking up a name to fight against evil on her own, perhaps with the occasional assistance of her trusty servant.

❝They say that cats are angels with whiskers.❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#A4D3EE ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #FFADB9

|| Be Brave || Owl City ||

"Clover, time to wake up," a voice said, a gentle hand rubbing her back. The kitten pried her eyes open, light filtering into the room, dancing softly on the floor and playing on the bed sheets. Clover... that was her, wasn't it? The kitten pushed herself into a sitting position and rubbed her eyes, the voice coming from her dark haired counterpart, her twin sister. "Rosemary made you a special breakfast, but first, let's get dressed." Maple helped Clover to the bathroom, brushing her sister's hair and reminding Clover how she had to brush her teeth. Once toileting needs were seen to, Maple helped Clover into something cute and then back into the bedroom to eat breakfast. "Clover does not want to be burden," she said, worried her twin didn't like having to take care of her.

"It isn't a burden, you're my cute little sister, of course I'll take care of you!" Maple grinned, giving Clover a thumb's up. The kitten blushed, looking down at her lap. "Besides, it's like playing dress up, you're just like a little rag doll I can carry around and show off. Oh! That reminds me, the others are going to come by later, is that okay?" Clover nodded slowly, wondering who exactly the others were. "Great! Let's get started on breakfast, shall we?" Clover nodded once more and Maple lifted up the top of the tray to reveal a stack of pancakes and crispy meat. It smelled heavenly, Clover's mouth drooling at the sight of it. "Clover wants," she reached for the tray, her body still weak. "Uh-uh, you can't spill all over your nice outfit. I'll feed you," Maple elected, picking up a fork and knife, perhaps enjoying spoiling Clover more than the kitten had originally thought.

Once breakfast was accounted for, Maple brought over the alchemy books that had been sitting on the table for days. "Here, Julian brought these over, he said they were important to you. I don't understand anything in there, but maybe you will?" Clover lifted up one of the heavy, leather bound books and began leafing through it. "This is medicine," she explained the first page, surprised that she could read the old Latin text. "These are for mixing, needs to be hot, but can help cough." Maple's eyes widened, "Wow, you're amazing Clover! You can really read that gibberish?" Clover hesitated, nodding slowly. "Maybe once you're better, you can make potions again!" So this was something she had done in the past? Clover ran her hands over the words of the page, feeling the indentations of the hand written text.

A knock at the door made both sisters look up. "Is that others?" Clover asked hesitantly, wondering if she was ready to face them. What if they were disappointed that she couldn't remember them? "Yes, that's them. Don't worry, I already told them what happened," they had been outraged by this development, but Rosemary had soothed them, informing them that it was her decision and it was strictly medical to allow Clover to live her best life. The door opened slowly, their scents filling the room. They were familiar, but Clover couldn't tell how. "Clover this is Eamon and his familiar Fiyero, this is Julian and his familiar Cookie, Rosemary, and Mallier." They cautiously approached the bed side, Fiyero reaching her first. He took a delicate hand in his own, kissing her fingertips.

"I'm so glad you're alright," he said sincerely. "Fiyero... is pervert Maple warned Clover about," the others busted out laughing, Fiyero's ears standing upright in indignation. "I am not a pervert!" He retorted, "I am a lady's man, there's a difference!"

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

It is said that one day, the mages would destroy the world. The only way to save it is to lock us away, to put us behind the barrier but make it big enough that we forget it even exists. Estelle grit her teeth, unable to tear her eyes away from it. The world, saved? As if! The book wasn't exactly completely right here, that's for sure, the flow of mana and how it interacted with their the world proved out. There's something wrong here, and Estelle intended on breaking it all apart. "Okay, that's enough." Eamon closed the book in her face as she was getting more on the research. "Come, you have to interact with at least the cats, since you're taking them with you, right?" Yes, she was because Maple kept pestering her about it. "Okay, fine."

So Estelle and Eamon were able to catch Fiyero's kissing of Clover's fingertips and then his insistence that he was not a pervert, but a lady's man. "I remember when you used to try to act all lady man." Mallier gave Eamon a wink as the two siblings entered the room. Estelle gave a small wave Maple's direction, the black cat smiling in acknowledgement. "Maybe I'll do it again for you sometime." Eamon gave her a peck on the cheek. They were sad, because Yana was gone.. .but even so, their love for each other still would exist even if they had loved Yana too. It was supposed to be a three person relationship but now a vital part of the triangle was gone. Estelle could see a bit of it, the slight awkwardness they had but said nothing. It wasn't her job to interfere with her baby brother's business.

"Clover, you won a prize!" Estelle gave her a big toothy grin, blonde hair flaring dramatically behind her for better effect. What was that prize, you may ask? "An all expense trip to the Subhuman Refuge with Maple and me! Do you accept the invitation?" She stood boldly, hands on her hips, eyes glinting. "Day after tomorrow we'll head out, so get everything you need ready!" What would she need, even? At this point, who really knew? Rosemary looked intently at her eldest daughter, but Estelle ignored the piercing gaze and eyes that tried to bore into her soul. "I'll help you gather everything you'll need." Maple nuzzled her sister's tail with her own after giving a protective hiss at Fiyero's claim of innocence.

Estelle, the True Heroine, gave a grin. "We also need to give you a name! I'm the True Heroine, and Maple is the True Sidekick." Maple groaned audibly. "But your naming sense isn't good at all, why are we the true everything?" The glint flashed again in the blonde heroine's eyes. "Because our job is to find truth! And also, because it's a theme! The True Kitten, how's that?" Maple puffed her cheeks. "Give her something cooler, I'm a kitten too!" Lots of names flashed through the True Heroine's mind. How was she supposed to find one that worked? "True Alchemist? True Floof? I dunno, this is hard. Good names have always been difficult to perfect!" Maple rolled her eyes again. "She's bad, so you should make your own name." She whispered into Clover's ear.

❝They say that cats are angels with whiskers.❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#A4D3EE ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #FFADB9

|| Be Brave || Owl City ||

Clover looked around at all of the faces, trying to memorize them so she wouldn't forget again. "I'm Cookie! We used to live together," the cross dressing ferret handed Clover a gift, a notebook. "This way you can write everything down so if you forget, you can always look back and remember." Clover clutched the notebook close to her chest, she wouldn't forget again, Clover was going to write everything down to make sure she would remember forever. Of course, Maple hadn't revealed to Clover the reason her memories were missing, she had simply told her that her memories were gone and that was it. Clover trusted Maple, her older twin, her guide in this strange world, she would never think or believe that Maple and Rosemary would be the cause of her missing memories.

"Thank you Cookie, Clover will cherish forever." She placed the notebook down, already thinking of what she might put in it. "I brought you something too! This!" Julian pulled out a friendship bracelet, "I made one for everyone, this way, we can all stay connected." He tied it around Clover's ankle, that way it wouldn't get stained when she took up alchemy once more. "Clover loves, thank you," for some reason her eyes teared up, it felt as though someone or something was missing. "Clover, what's wrong? Are you in pain?" Maple asked, holding onto her hand. Clover shook her head, sniffling. "Clover is... happy," she swiped at her eyes, trying to make the tears stop. Without the stress, the artery wall had thickened once more and the swelling in her spine was at last decreasing.

Estelle and Eamon sauntered in, Maple informing Clover who each of them were. Clover had won a prize? She sat up eagerly, wondering what it was. The kitten was going to go with them to find the subhuman refuge, a place shrouded in mystery. The kitten's tail picked up a little, wondering what the subhuman refuge was. "Clover is excited," she said, butterflies fluttering in her stomach, "but also much nervous." Maple pat her head, "don't worry, you have this!" Maple pulled Clover's shirt down, Fiyero letting out a whistle. She shot a glare in his direction and went on to explain. "This is a mana stone, it can absorb the mana of anyone that tries to attack you!" Clover touched it gently, something stirring inside of her. "Clover will use," she looked up at Estelle as the heroine attempted to give Clover a snazzy side kick name.

True Heroine and True Sidekick were Estelle and Maple's names, but somehow, Clover sensed that she didn't fit into their two man puzzle. To the world, Ghost was dead, Tiger Lily too, was gone. Not that Clover knew this, but as she racked through her mind, trying to think of the perfect hero name, Rosemary stepped forward. "How about Blossom?" There was something sad in her eyes as she spoke the words, the room falling silent. "Clover likes it," she smiled innocently, "Clover will be Blossom!" She clapped her hands together decisively. "Perfect, Fiyero and I will get right to work designing your costume!" Eamon said, grabbing Fiyero by one of his ears. It would be an homage to the Blue Lotus and Tiger Lily, his best work yet.

"Are you sure Clover?" Maple asked, "you only get to chose your hero name once, you know?" Clover nodded. "Clover will be Blossom."

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

Sure, the trip was going to be dangerous. Who knew where the search of truth would lead them? But then again, if you were to travel, Estelle probably was the best choice for that. In Min City, she had been the second strongest of all the mages, only losing to Manfred. Now, though, if you were talking on a scale of power throughout the land - or at least, the land that they could see - Estelle probably ranked fourth overall. Manfred was second, and first place? Let's just say if you met them, you were very likely to die a horrible death. "It'll be dangerous, but I'm super strong! There's nothing to fear!" Maple, still rolling her eyes at how silly her Heroine could be at times, gave a smile of confidence. "She really is. She never lost a fight yet!"

You could ask the True Heroine if she regretted any of her actions. Killing her father, killing kind old Bayon - even trying to kill her own family. Ask her, does she regret what she did? Does she feel sorrow for taking those lives? Of course, she didn't regret it. Maybe there was a bit of sadness to it, but it was all necessary. In order to save the world and bring about order, they had no choice. Magic was too dangerous, it was a curse. Just like how Manfred saw his actions as just and necessary, so did Estelle Harrington. "Hm, but that name doesn't fit our theme." Maple took a deep breath and held both of her Master's hands by the wrists. "I have to tell you something." The black cat said, sorrow and anxiety in her eyes. Estelle raised her eyebrow. What kind of confession was this going to be now?

Maple spoke, voice trembling as she did so. "I think we need different names. The names you chose are just really bad." There was silence as no one knew how to react. Estelle closed her eyes, clearly in pain from those hurtful words. "I see." She said with a sad smile. "I was so proud of those... okay. Okay, then maybe you guys can decide names for us!" She nodded, casting away the True Heroine name. Maybe she even wanted to cry because she had worked so hard on that name. Sadly, in the end, the truth came out and it was dumb this entire time. She smiled at the kittens even as Eamon struggled to control his laughter. "Then I'll entrust you two for names for me and Maple!"

With that, Estelle tapped the mana stone on Clover's chest, imbueing it with light magic. "A gift, because you're cute!" Maybe it was guilt for having to wipe her memories, or maybe it was because it could help protect her in an emergency later on. "Remember, our journey begins tomorrow!" Rosemary suddenly smiled. "Then I'll make a big banquet for everyone! Clover, Maple, do you two want to help me cook?" Estelle continued to avoid her mother's gaze and glanced over, wanting to go back to researching when Eamon and Mallier both took her hands, sitting her down. "Stay with us, isolating yourself isn't a good way to spend the time." Eamon grinned at her. "Then I'll listen as my new name is decided." She crossed her arms huffily.

❝They say that cats are angels with whiskers.❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#A4D3EE ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #FFADB9

|| Be Brave || Owl City ||

Clover thought about it, she picked up one of her alchemy books, flipping through the pages. The kitten was acutely aware that they were waiting for her to respond with their new hero names. She had to take inspiration from somewhere, because Maple believed that the names Estelle had given them were dreadful. Suddenly, Clover's ears perked up, a slow grin making its way onto her lips. "What about Dazzle? Because Estelle is light mage! And for Maple, Fang, because Maple is cat like Clover?" Maple's eyes lit up, she clapped her hands together, clearly excited. "Yes! I love it, I love it! Thank you Clover!" Maple threw her arms around her little sister, purring as she rubbed her cheek against her white furred counterpart. "Clover is happy Maple likes them," the kitten squeaked, having been uncertain in herself.

"We'll help cook dinner, it'll be good for Clover to get out of the room," Maple helped Clover up, her feet feeling wobbly. "Can Clover not walk?" The kitten asked, frightened. "No, you can walk silly, you're just weak right now. Don't worry, you'll be up and walking in no time." They followed Rosemary to the kitchen in order to prepare the said feast, Mallier and Eamon bombarding Estelle in order to make her interact with them. Perhaps they wanted to know what she was up to? Why she wanted to venture to the forest? Fiyero stood, following them, having not seen Clover in a very long time. Julian and Cookie went to set the table, wanting to decorate the dining room in order to celebrate.

Maple sat Clover down in a chair in the kitchen, helping her put on an apron and tying it in the back. "Clover does not remember ever cooking," Clover had never cooked before, which was a simple fact. "You don't remember anything silly," Maple reminded her, patting Clover's head fondly. Fiyero too, put on an apron, although more so not to get dirty than to help. Rosemary gave them each a task, wanting Clover to peel potatoes, Maple to cut carrots, and Fiyero to debone an entire fish. "Ew, I don't cook," Fiyero shook his head. "Well in my kitchen, you do," Rosemary replied, waving a spoon at him. Fiyero yelped, picking up a knife in order to start cutting. Maple laughed, nearly nicking her finger. "Careful Maple!" Clover cried, dropping a potato on the floor. Rosemary sighed, perhaps second guessing herself.

"So Clover, you really don't remember anything?"Fiyero asked to make certain, the kitten nodding her head, her limp tail occasionally making an attempt to swish. "Clover remembers nothing," Fiyero seemed relieved that Clover could not recall all of the times he had squished her mounds.

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

Estelle was being a stubborn brat as she crossed her arms in wait for a special new name for herself and Maple to go along with Clover's newly fashioned title of Blossom that the white cat chose for herself. Ultimately, two names were decided - Dazzle for Estelle because of her specialty in light magic despite being able to pretty much do everything, and because she was a kitty and kitties had fangs, Maple's new hero name became Fang. Dazzle, Maple, and Fang, was that a good trio? "I guess it's fine." Estelle murmured with a surly frown, having been beaten in name sense by an amnesiac white cat. "Even though I worked so hard on making good names, too." Maple stuck her cute little tongue out at her. "You thought naming your sword "Flashlight" was a good idea."

Hang on, what was going on here? "It was a perfect idea! My sword is flashy and it's made of light! I thought flashlight was super cool and neat!" Maple gave her a piteous look as she, Clover, Fiyero, and Rosemary left to go to the kitchen next, leaving Estelle trapped between her younger brother and his girlfriend who most definitely was good at blackmailing people if she needed to. It was funny since in the past, the Melwicke family was supposed to be one with integrity and fairness, but Mallier had become hardened by the circumstances about them, by the genocide of the mages in Min City. "Why do I have to talk to you guys anyways? I have a book to read!" Eamon and Mallier both teamed up to keep her pinned down on the chair while the others got dinner ready. "Because you're our link to the outside, you know." Eamon told her. Mallier added with a smile. "And you'll be my sister in law!" Estelle of course already knew the real reason. They wanted to see if she really was no longer hostile, if there was a chance she would feel bad for the things she did.

There was no hope for that though, not with the mission she was setting out on. "Yeah yeah. I'm not your sister, so you can diddle whoever you want to daddle." Mallier blushed at that, Eamon giving a nervous cough. "It's dangerous, okay?" Eamon said at last, throwing up his arms in frustration. "I know we've had our problems, with you abandoning us... but that doesn't change that we're family. You're my last sibling. Erika's dead..." He choked up. Did Estelle too? Who really knew? "Clover doesn't remember my promise to protect her, either. I failed both of them when it mattered most." Eamon was usually more jerky but he looked almost in tears. "I don't want to lose you, too. You took the bad path, but I know you're still a good person."

Estelle sighed. What was she supposed to do here? "Only this once, okay?" She gave her little brother a pat on the head, ruffling her hand through his hair. "You worked hard. Stop working so hard, you'll just go bald." Mallier giggled at that for the oddest reason. "She cares about you, even with her history. I told you she did." The blonde stood up boldly. "Of course I don't! I'm the enemy! Don't trust me or I'll betray you!" She stormed off to go back to the library, breaking free.

❝They say that cats are angels with whiskers.❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#A4D3EE ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #FFADB9

|| Be Brave || Owl City ||

"You're cuter without your memories, much less hostile," Fiyero winked, no doubt enjoying not being chewed out for who knows what. Clover looked at the potatoes she had peeled, wondering what she had been hostile about in the past. "You always had your guard up, you never relaxed," Fiyero teased, "like a wind up toy always ready to pounce." Fiyero touched her nose, "I made a promise to my Master, I won't fail him this time," Fiyero whispered underneath his breath. "What are you doing?" Maple cried, turning around. She put her knife down, hugging Clover protectively. "Get your dirty mitts off of my cute little sister!" Maple hissed, having noticed Fiyero's hand stroking Clover's tail. The kitten tilted her head to the side curiously, "Did Clover do wrong?" She asked, wondering if she had been bad. "No, not you, him." Maple glared, baring her fangs.

"Oh, don't be like that," Fiyero grabbed Maple's tail, stroking it lovingly. "Cats are so cute," he purred, his own tail swishing. Maple's legs shook, doing her best not to purr. "Fiyero, no lewd acts in my kitchen!" Rosemary waved a knife at him, making all of her crew get back to work. Maple was working on cutting up the potatoes that Clover had peeled. "Oh no!" A potato slipped, the kitten cutting her finger on the peeling apparatus. "Oh no, Clover! Be more careful!" Rosemary sighed, placing down her spoon to come over and inspect. "It's just a small cut," she smiled gently, wrapping it in a band aid. "There are lessons in pain, you would do well to remember that," she said softly, figuring that it was not worth healing. When a healer used their magic, they extracted mana from the person they were healing. When they did it on a normal human, it used up energy stores, which could lead to exhaustion.

Clover went right back to work, this time peeling zucchinis. "What is Clover making?" The kitten wondered aloud, Maple moving Clover's chair to a different counter so that she could mix something in a bowl rather than work with sharp utensils. "Clover is making cake!" Maple said happily, putting out the ingredients to help. Fiyero took over cutting, Maple adding ingredients into the bowl and Clover stirring to make sure that everything was combined. "Maybe it's selfish of me," Rosemary said quietly to Fiyero as the two sisters interacted. "But I wanted to keep Clover," it was clear that she had considered the kitten her daughter, even if Rosemary had no rights to her. Technically, Maple and Clover, like so many on the poor side, had no identification. They were undocumented citizens by all means, which meant that they could move freely from place to place. "It's not selfish," Fiyero shook his head. "If anything, Maple is the selfish one. Clover's like a baby, in a way, it's wrong to take her on a dangerous stunt like this."

The two sisters seemed so happy together though, which was not a fact that could be denied. As much as Fiyero and Rosemary wanted to keep Clover all to themselves, they had to let her go, even if they had just gotten her back. She had a life to live, a name to make, and a city to save.

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

Eventually it was dinner time, and the family was all gathered. What kind of delicious meal had Rosemary made for them today, with the help of her small army of assistants, of course? Estelle did not know, but she intended on finding out. So when food time was called, Mallier rushed over excitedly to the table. Eamon took her hand with a bit of a smile before Estelle could draw away. "Welcome back, sis." He told her, and Estelle sighed, scratching her head. "Just this once, okay? Once I'm gone, I'm not your sister anymore." Sure, she still loved her family. She even loved her father who she had driven a sword of light through. But in the end, she had her mission and she had no choice but to complete it. If she didn't, then Manfred would complete his plan and all would be for naught.

It all smelled quite delicious and Estelle knew why. Mother had always been one of the best cooks the world had seen, and that hadn't changed despite losing a large part of her family. "Master, you should play with Clover more before you go!" Fiyero told him with a grin as he and Maple helped set up the food for everyone at the table. Eamon looked as if he wanted to - how close had they been, Estelle wondered to herself. "It might just be awkward." He murmured, looking down at his food. "We used to be friends, but now she probably doesn't want to remember." Of course, one part of it was that Eamon and Erika had been siblings, so wasn't there a chance that Clover's memories could be jogged? No magic was perfect, and Distortion magic was the least stable of all of them. It made sense not to want to make the risk, even if Fiyero and Mallier had teamed up to force Eamon to pet one of Clover's ears.

"Thanks for the food." Estelle stood up quickly once she finished eating. It had all been very good, and the noises of appreciation she made while chewing probably was more than enough to prove it. "Now I have to go and research some more!" Maple pulled on her long hair, making her fall onto her back before she could escape. "I heard from Rosemary that she still keeps your violin here." Maple said with a fiendish grin. "Do you want to play for us?" It had been a while since she ever got to just relax and play, hadn't it? "Fine! Just this once!" Estelle grabbed the case from Rosemary and stood up on the makeshift stage, hands on the bow, chin on the rest, playing her heart out her favorite tune that reminded her of the old King Arthur tales of ages past.

Once that was done and bathing was finished, Estelle retreated back to her guest room. It was coming back now, it all was. Every night around the same time until morning, this happened and she had no idea why. Her mana nodes all seemed to retract and horrible burning pain shot up her spine, ebbing out in waves to the rest of her body. She cast a spell of silence on herself so she wouldn't alert anyone. She hugged herself on her knees until she could regain her her strength and slowly meander her way back to bed. "Gnight." She murmured to no one, gazing at the sad moon in the night sky. Tomorrow the journey would begin again. And hopefully one day they could break the barrier and see what was outside.

They had a wonderful feast, one full of decadent food and plenty of cake for dessert, featuring an impromptu violin playing by Estelle and plenty of pets for her cake making skill. Clover purred as she received pets, finishing up her slice of cake. The kitten had a great final evening with the people she couldn't remember, Maple helping her up to bed in the nice little room she had awoken in. Once the kitten was dressed for sleep, Maple said her goodnight and went off to find her Master. Clover turned over in bed, looking out the closed window. The curtains wafted gently in the spring breeze, the smell of flowers carrying into her room. Clover closed her eyes, hoping to fall asleep as peacefully as she had the night before. A knock startled her, the kitten looking around her room. She propped up on her elbows, scanning the area for what could have made the sound.

Standing in the corner was an ominous figure shadowed in black, red eyes seeming to pierce through Clover's soul. The kitten froze in fear, wondering what this entity could possibly be. It moved forth, shrouded in shadows, a dark arm stretching out. "Who-who is it?" Clover stuttered, moving backwards. Fingers latched around her throat, the kitten choking as she was lifted from the bed, her limbs flailing. A breathless sigh seemed to fill the room, Clover scratching at the fingers as she gasped for air. A knock came from the door, the shadow disappearing. The kitten sat up, panting, shaking, gasping for air. "Clover?" Fiyero's ears twitched, "who are you talking to?" The kitten looked down at her lap, shaking her head. "Bad... dream, Clover thinks," Fiyero strolled across the space, shutting the window.

"You'll catch a cold if you sleep with that open, what's Maple thinking?" He pat Clover's head, smiling softly. "Don't think about it too much, just try to get some sleep. Okay?" Fiyero left, closing the door behind him. Clover bundled herself up underneath her blanket, wondering if she could have possibly been dreaming. Yes, that must have been it, the thought was comforting. Clover closed her eyes, able to fall asleep without issue the second time. The kitten dozed off, comforted by the thought that it had simply been sleep paralysis and nothing more. She had felt as though she barely slept by the time Eamon shook her awake, wanting her to try on her new hero costume. Clover sat up, rubbing her eyes sleepily. "I told you not to wake her!" Maple crowed, clearly upset. "Clover needs sleep, cats have to get their beauty rest!"

"You're a cat too, aren't you?" Eamon asked, Maple's tail swishing angrily. "Clover is awake," the kitten yawned, finding that today, her toes could wiggle, her knees could bend, and her tail could swish to its heart's content. "Clover wants to see," the kitten said eagerly, nearly falling out of bed. "Careful!" Maple caught her before she could hit the floor, setting Clover back down. "Clover is dizzy," she had sat up too quickly. Eamon shook his head, smiling slightly, "Here you go, Fiyero and I worked all night on it." He handed Clover a box, the kitten eager to look inside. Her eyes sparkled as she lifted the top, glancing at the garment inside.

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

The wind was howling all around them. The vast open plains of the wilderness stretched out almost as far as the eye could see. Off in the distance if you looked just right you could see the high rise of Min City, and the Wall of Glory that stretched far up into the sky. The air of of adventure filled the space around the three girls as they had a single goal in mind. To find Tyrna Lantum and find the truth of this world! Estelle, now known as Dazzle in a beautiful new outfit Eamon made for her, even with new attachments to her techwing implants given to her by the CCC to make her look almost like a fairy of gold. With the sun shining down on them, the three girls made their way across the sky.

"Please, take care. Don't let anything happen to the cute kittens." Fiyero implored before they left that morning. The fox really seemed to care for both Clover and Maple despite everything. Eamon shrugged, giving a special bell collar to Clover. Not the same one that belonged to her before, but a new one he made himself. "I know, it's not that good. But here, so you always know you're welcome home here at the Spider's Nest." Even Mallier was stressing over making sure the girls had packed enough food into their packs to last at least a week. "Come home safe once you're done investigating this truth or whatnot." The information broker said with a smile. Rosemary had to give all three girls big deep hugs, even Estelle had no choice but to accept it despite the distance they had as mother and daughter. Even though they were enemies, it was a lie to say she didn't like it at least a little bit.

"I guess I should tell you both what we'll be doing." As they flew towards the Forest of Giant Trees, which was where the Subuhman Refuge was said to be hidden. The plant life here was giant as a result of magic, big enough to hide even the tallest of buildings in Min City. Because of how thick the miasma was, it was hard for mages to exist here since the miasma would get in the way of their mana nodes. How would it affect Estelle's even more sensitive nodes? Hopefully she would be fine. "This world we live in is only a tiny little cage. We live on an island and are told lies of an outside world beyond this so-called continent." Estelle had explored it herself, the extent of the cage that they lived in.

The Barrier was key, of course. "There's a Barrier that keeps everything in and everything out. It's not physical or anything... but it exists." They flew, the world stretching on in the horizon. The island might be big, but whatever was waiting on the other side of the barrier was bigger. "If you try to sail through or fly past, you'll see land. And then you'll see that somehow you're back to where you started in the first place. You'll magically be turned around back to shore." How could they break through? And what was out there? Were they locked in? Or did they do it to lock someone out? Estelle needed to know the truth. If the miasma in the air was right, what was waiting outside was not good at all. It could even mean the end of the world. "And Tyrna Lantum, a subhuman, might know hints on how to investigate this barrier."

Maple was very happy with her matching outfit. She was Estelle's sidekick, so she had to at least look the part. Clover on the other hand, stood out with her white outfit and lacy white mask. She didn't belong to their duo, Eamon had made that abundantly clear. The kitten took the collar, placing it around her neck so that she wouldn't lose it. "Thank you Eamon," Clover said, accepting all of the hugs and scritches. Rosemary took her time hugging them, giving Maple an awfully long hug. "If the memories come back, use this," Rosemary said quietly, pushing a small phial into Maple's palm. It contained a purple liquid, "it will knock the consumer out for an extended period of time, which should give you a chance to bring Clover back here before her heart stops again." Maple nodded, taking the phial safely into her utility belt.

"They won't come back, but thank you," Maple smiled, she was confident that she could protect her sister, who perhaps didn't need her older twin to shield her anymore. The thought made Maple's smile dip; she and Clover used to be so close, but her cute little sister had made a name for herself. She watched as Fiyero scritched underneath Clover's chin and Julian joked around; even without her memories, Clover fit right into their world. Maple took pause, wondering if it was cruel of her to rip Clover away from these people who cared so much for her. Ultimately, the black haired cat shook her head, deciding that she knew what was best for her Clover. "Come here you!" Maple glomped on her, "stay close to me, okay? The forest can be a scary place!"

Clover nodded her head, taking Maple's hand, who took Estelle's hand. They leaped onto Estelle's light sword, soaring through the early morning sky. Clover shivered, a bit chilly. "Clover has never flown before," these was something new. She swung her feet, looking down at the ground, zipping through Min City and towards the forest. "Ooh, it's going to be just like when we were kids!" Maple giggled, "we're going to have so many adventures! I can't wait!" Clover too, giggled, although she wasn't sure why. She couldn't recall said memories, but she had a good feeling that they would be having plenty of fun. Their ride came to an end all too quickly and Clover wiped her tear stained cheeks, the wind having stung her eyes.

They stayed close to the mage, Maple's eyes widening slightly as she recognized the landscape. "I know... this place," Maple realized. "This is where our mage was from," her hand tightened around Clover's. The kitten looked around innocently, sniffing the air. Her tail swished as she smelled scents that were strange and exciting, a new adventure making her stomach bubble. "Clover can't wait to see Tyrna," she decided. The phrase subuman stirred something within her and the kitten winced, hoping that the headache was only temporary. "You shouldn't call them that Master, it's like calling a magician a smelly mage!"

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

Finally they landed, dwarfed by the giant trees. This was the forest just outside Min City, which was huge not just in tree size, but also in the mount of land it consisted of. The Forest of Giant Trees was big enough to count as it's own city, taking nearly twice as much space as Min City itself. They landed on the far side and entered. Somewhere in here, the Subhuman Refuge was. "Oh, sorry." Estelle scratched her ear, turning her flying light sword into a flashlight to light up the path. In here, despite the bright daylight outside on the grassy wilderness plains and barrens, hardly any light was able to trickle down through the canopy to the forest floor where the three girls walked. Almost immediately, Estelle could feel the miasma choking in around her.

She fell to her knees, her mana nodes shrieking and giving her awful pain into her spine. The miasma was always present in the air but it was particularly worse now. Her light sword flickered and died out. After about ten minutes she was able to regain control of her body again. "Thanks." Maple had been rubbing her back, trying her best to soothe it. "It happens when miasma gets too thick." She explained to her cute sister so that she understood. "Master's very sensitive and throughout the day miasma buidls up in her nodes. Most mages can process the miasma without too much harm, but Master's always been weak to it." No, no one knew why this could be mostly because Estelle only told one person of this and that person was Maple herself. Not even her lover, Hans, knew of this affliction. "I'm okay now. Let's keep going." Maybe outside the Barrier clean mana existed, free of this miasma that stunk it up.

Though it was always impossible to tell where from, Estelle could feel it, the eyes of the local denizens on them. The forest was thick and dark, the miasma even darker to the point that Maple could feel it too. "Master, I smell them, but a lot of it is magically sealed. I know they're around but not where." Maple reported, nose twitching nervously as she sniffed. They continued walking until suddenly Estelle fell to her knees again, the miasma once again clogging up her mana nodes. That was when they stepped out, a decent group of subhumans, some with horns, some with paws, some with tails, all holding magically-forged weapons at the party. "What is a human doing here? We made a treaty with the Mage King of Mithras ages ago that no humans are to come here, this is our home!"

"The kitten are welcome, it's always nice to see more anima." Anima was of course what the official term for subhumans is. But wait, King? Something didn't make sense. Remembering her history, Estelle focused, fighting through the pain. "What King? The last time we had a monarchy was hundreds of years ago... but since it fell into decay humanity has become nothing more than independent city states." There wasn't a king or single human ruler, not anymore. "I see. Well, the treaty stands. Come with us." A rabbit-eared human took Estelle by the hands. The miasma was so thick she couldn't summon her magic even if she wanted to. "As for you kitties, welcome to Anima Village!" It was a society built into the trees themselves for the Anima to live in peace.

The miasma, while thick, did not seem to effect Maple's mana nodes. It was strange, but perhaps considering her mana was much weaker than that of Estelle's, it wouldn't have such an intense repercussion as it did on her Master. Clover walked over curiously, wishing she could do something to help. Instead, she assisted in rubbing Estelle's back until the spell seemed to pass, both kitties getting plenty of pats on the head for their good work. "Clover can feel it," she tapped her mana stone, able to sense the difference. Maple had a headache from it, but aside from teh clouding of the blue stone, Clover did not suffer the same consequences. The perks of being a manaless, ordinary, human cat.

They walked further into the forest, having to stop once more after Estelle fell to her news, a crowd of animals coming out with hand made weapons to warn them off. Clover yelped, running to hide behind Maple, who stepped forward to protect them. Maple wasn't the best at combat, but she had made a promise to herself that she was going to protect her sister and her Master and that is exactly what the kitten was going to try and do. Clover's hands balled into fists, possibly the one with the most hand to hand combat, not that she could remember. The anima stepped forward, a girl with rabbit ears greeting them. Clover relaxed, her hands uncurling. The rabbit girl took a palm in her own, with a smile, leading them into the village of anima, a soft glow pulsating from the trees. "Wow," Clover breathed, her eyes widening in awe as she took it all in.

"Clover loves," she said, her tail swishing eagerly. Maple helped lift Estelle up, bringing her into the village. They followed the bunny girl into one of the huts, setting Estelle down on the bed. "Maple, can Clover explore please?" She asked her sister, tail swishing eagerly. Maple hesitated, she didn't want to lose track of Clover in a place like this. "Just stay close, okay?" Maple made her promise, taking both of Clover's hands. "I don't want you to get lost," Clover smiled, "Clover will be very close. Maple will be able to hear bell!" With that she ran off to explore, looking up at all of the colorful huts that decorated the trees. Bridges criss crossed across the sky, leading from place to place. Clover took the one closest to her, knowing that she didn't have permission to go far.

Maple cast a quick finding charm, attaching it to Clover so that she would be able to find her if she got lost. The kitten's tail swished eagerly as anima curiously glanced at the strangely dressed kitty, politely steering themselves away from the unknown being.

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

Estelle was shivering as she was laid down on a bed. The rabbit girl, who introduced herself as Ina Laemmle, was brewing up an herbal concoction. "Herbs? What is that? Is that alchemy?" Maple asked curiously. A few guards were stationed around of course, because a human mage being here was supposed to be against the treaty between human and anima. Estelle wasn't allowed to be here, and so she would not be allowed to roam freely. "It's herbology. A kind of alchemy that focuses on medicines and plants." While normal alchemy could use other materials like rocks or animal parts to create various effects like a fire bomb attack or a teleportation potion, herbology was strictly for curative uses, taking magic essence of plants to create healing remedies. "Here, this should help with the miasma."

The brew was a faint pale green color and it looked thick, almost like a heavy sort of milk. It was probably going to taste bad too, like mushed up spinach all put together. "Master, please, drink up. I don't like seeing you like this." Estelle panted as she was given the herbal mix to drink. Slowly she felt her strength return to her, the pain in her spine receding. Why was it, though, that Estelle was so especially sensitive to miasma? It wasn't because of her mana pool being huge. It really wasn't, just a little above average she was. So Maple asked and Ina answered with a smile. "It's based on versatility." The rabbit explained. The more spells a mage could use, the more susceptible to miasma they were. On the flipside, most anima could only learn one or two spells, but they really trained those two spells to be highly specialized and strong. Therefore most of them could live perfectly fine int he Forest of Giant Trees without incident.

And Estelle, being fluent in all schools of magic, naturally was the most versatile of mages and thus she was incredibly weak to the dark energy mixing in with the natural mana of the world. A cow walked in then, or well a human male with cow ears, horns, and hooves. "Oh, Tyrna!" Ina smiled at him as he entered. "What are you doing?" Estelle's gaze fell on him in curiosity. So this short cow anima was her source? "I have a feeling they're here to ask me about the Barrier." Tyrna's voice felt almost like rubbing gravel on the road. "Yes." Estelle croaked, wanting to vomit, partly because the brew was disgusting, partly because of how sick the miasma made her feel.

"The Barrier was created because of a mistake." Tyrna spoke gravely, hands behind his back. "A mistake of the human mages. They unleashed something, and had no choice but to make the barrier to lock everyone onto this island. But the barrier is cracked, and miasma is leaking in as a result." He sighed, looking down at the mossy floor. "There's no solution, human. The miasma will bleed into everything and in the end all mages will die, and it's all thanks to the arrogance of human mages." Estelle grit her teeth, staring at him. "I know." She said. "That's why I wanted to kill all mages, including myself."

The kitten was too curious for her own good. She followed her nose, her tail wishing, as she entered a hut that had a large sign of the door, depicting pictures of bread. Plenty of anima could not read, therefore, they relied on pictures to tell them where things were. The kitten entered eagerly, the heavenly scent making her mouth water. "Clover smells lots of yummy things," she reached into her pocket, hoping that she had some form of payment with her. "Oh, lucky me, a pretty kitty has come to visit me. What's the kitty's name?" A boy asked, looking to be part tiger. "Clover is Clover," she replied, wondering why the tiger spoke so strangely. He raised a brow, thinking Clover the one to be strange. "Well, Clover, Blair is Blair. Blair Tennenbaum, at your service," he winked, leaning across the counter, flour staining his white apron.

"What can I do for you Clover?" Blair asked, his tail playing with her own. Clover blushed, looking away. "Smells good," Clover admitted, feeling a bit embarrassed. He grinned, "want to try some?" The kitten nodded eagerly, placing her palms down on the counter. "Here, try some of this," he pulled out a loaf of freshly baked bread, pulling a piece off. The kitten took it eagerly, the bread still warm in her hands. She nibbled on the piece, the crunchy exterior hardly matching the perfectly fluffy, steaming interior. "Clover loves," she purred, rubbing the piece of bread against her cheek. "Well, if Clover likes that, she'll certainly like these," Blair placed two cookies inside of a bag and handed them to her. "But Clover cannot pay," her ears drooped as she realized. "My treat," Blair replied with a wink.

She perked up, thanking him and taking the bag. Clover exited the hut, wondering where she should go next. She followed her nose, crossing a bridge and entering a new place. They were weaving something, the kitten realized, staring at the large tapestries on the wall. Were they making more of these pictures? "Oh, hello stranger." A girl with feathery wings said, looking up from her loom. Clover stared at the figure with pale hair and red eyes, the bird smelling strange. "Do you like the pictures?" Clover nodded. "How does bird make pictures with string?" She smiled softly, patting the stool beside her. "Come here and I'll show you. My name is Riku," Riku? Clover thought that the people here had such strange, outlandish names.

"Clover is Clover," she took a seat, watching as Riku's fingers worked with nimble, expert movements, weaving the beautiful colors into a work of art. "You cross this one here, over that one and then this one here, then you pull this down and tada! You have a layer! Keep working and you can form a picture." Clover's head was spinning, it seemed that making tapestries was hard work. "Clover can share cookie," she decided, as payment for showing her this incredible talent. The kitten broke one of her cookies in half, handing it to Riku, who smiled. "Thank you for the food!"

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

|| The Blond Executioner ||

What was so serious that it was putting the world at risk? Everything was slowly decaying, Estelle could even feel it from here. Her mana nodes were going out of control and so she drank more of the disgusting concoction. "Why do you want this information?" Tyrna asked, ruffling his cow ears curiously at the human mage here. "Humans are usually not welcome here. Wasn't there a treaty a long time ago against your kind?" Ina shrugged with a slight frown, rabbit ears twitching. Estelle couldn't help but wonder if she should just illusion animal ears on herself to look or more like an anima... but it was too late, and she still didn't feel well regardless.

Before she could answer the cow, there was a siren that blared into all of their minds. "The Twisted are back! A bird Anima tweeted into their heads. "Everyone get into position!" The Twisted? What could that be, Estelle couldn't help but wonder. "The miasma twists things it touched, transforms living things into monsters." Ina explained with a heavy sigh. "Can you two help? The other one too, the white one. Every month they attack and we lose someone - I hope we don't lose someone this time, too." Several of the Anima gave Estelle dirty looks though, as though she were somehow at fault for the Twisted attacking. Still, they jumped off into battle. "Maple, let's go find Clover." Estelle stood up, feeling dizzy and weak in the knees. "You go first, make sure she's okay." The black cat nodded and sprinted off after her sister.

Estelle was tired. The miasma was too thick in the air and even if she wanted to fight, she wasn't sure if she had the energy for it. Strange mutated animalistic monsters were roaring on the ground, trying to break through the defensive wall of Anima fighting to protect it. Still, Dazzle knew she had no choice but to help and maybe prove that she wasn't here just to cause trouble. So with effort she summoned a light sword to ride on and flew through the green forest around her to help, flinging exploding light swords here and there to help defend the Anima that were fighting. Her face twisted as she forced herself. "Mwahaha!" She laughed maniacally just as she had when she was destroying her old childhood home. "Dazzle has come, so be awed by a true heroine!"

Eventually the siren made by the bluejay Anima ended, with only two casualties. A labrador was found crushed to death by a rock from one of the monkey Twisted, and a worm anima had its throat slashed open by what was likely a feral lion-type Twisted. "What are those things?" Maple asked as the three outsiders met up again. "They're from the miasma the humans created." Tyrna said softly, helping clean up the corpses of the Twisted that now littered the forest floor. "Eventually everything will become like that until someone can get rid of it somehow." But that was the problem, no one had idea idea how to do that, did they? But maybe if they broke the Barrier, then everything would be okay.

It was high up in the trees that she encountered it, reaching out her fingers to touch the strange haze that topped over the greenery. "Ouch!" Clover yelped, withdrawing her hand. She looked up at the strange thing that had stung her, wondering what it was. Clover put on a glove, using her other hand to reach upwards towards the sky. "I wouldn't do that," the kitten turned her head, blinking as she stared at a strange boy. His hair seemed to be made of feathers, his skin shiny. "Clover wants to know what it is," she let her arm return to her side, the two of them quietly watching one another. "You're quite different, aren't you?" The boy asked at last, "that stone... it shouldn't be inside of you, it's not natural."

Clover tilted her head to the side, her hand falling to the mana stone embedded in her chest. "They're mysterious, mana stones," he came close, touching the stone gently. "No one knows much about them aside from the fact that they can deflect and absorb large amounts of mana." He rifled through his pocket, pulling out a purple stone. "And they repel one another," the bird man held it up to Clover's own stone, the purple one flying out of his hands. He reached for it before it could fall and tucked it back into his pocket. "I don't sense any mana coming from you, which leads me to believe, you didn't have that put in willingly." Mages knew, of course, the capacity of mana stones, it wouldn't make sense for one to put it into their own body on purpose. Clover tilted her head to the side curiously, her tail rustling the leaves beside her.

"How are anima made?" The kitten inquired, drawing her knees up to her chest. The bird man laughed, "that's a good question. Some of us are cursed mages, most the product of forbidden love between a master and familiar. Some of us were the pets of mages who were unwittingly tested on." Was Clover made like that too? She wondered. "Clover! There you are!" Maple's head popped out from atop the forest canopy. "I told you not to run off and you went to the ceiling!" The kitten stiffened, knowing she was in trouble. The bird man took off, snickering to himself. "Clover has cookies?" The kitten tried, hoping that she wasn't going to get into too much trouble. "Come on, Estelle needs us!" Maple grabbed Clover's hands, leading her off in search of their Master.

"Maple, how was Clover made?" The kitten inquired, "Clover is cat, so why is Clover not cat?" Maple looked back at her, smiling patiently. "We were playing in Papa's lab when he dropped some of his alchemy things and poof! We were suddenly humans!" Poof? They were born with a poof? Clover nodded, following Maple as she thought it over in her head. When they reached Estelle, the fighting had already ended, the two kittens having been so high up that it had taken them a while to come back down. There were strange looking creatures scattered about the place, not human, but not anima either.

A barrier? The barrier? Clover had touched it! Her eyes widened as she recalled something.

"Clover has idea!" She bound over to Estelle eagerly, innocence in her eyes, the same innocence she had lost after being kicked out of Lord Bayon's home. "Mana stones can deflect and absorb large amounts of mana!"

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

After the fight, the Anima decided to let them stay in the Forest of Giant Trees for another day, but after that even Estelle really just wanted to get back to it. She wanted to take them to the edge of the island, to the ocean where impossibilities existed. They had a train of thought now, that maybe Clover's mana stone was somehow able to do something about it. "I'll be trusting you, then." In the meantime, as thanks for the three of them trying to do something about the Barrier and the miasma thickening on the island of mages that they once thought was their entire world. They couldn't do anything about it trapped in the forest like this, but the three heroes could.

The miasma of the world was seeping in, and with how humans and mages alike gleefully hunted and enslaved Anima, perhaps some of the anima wondered if they really had the right to continue existing in this world. All the losses they took as they fled to the forest away from the eyes of humans, even as humans poisoned the forest with miasma to kill them off, they knew that those losses would just be the beginning. For centuries the survival of the Anima was out of their hands, as they had no way of defeating humanity. But one day, the Anima gripped the daggers of their heats, and they fought back. What did the humans who saw the death of their kind feel? What did the anima who saw the chance of freedom feel? Some were filled with pride. Some were filled with hope. Some were filled with rage, but they all screamed with their feelings alike. As the miasma from the Barrier continues to fill this tiny island, what scream will fill all of their hearts? Can they believe that there's a place for them in this world, that they can control their own destinies once again? If those heroes can break the Barrier...

Clover was taught about herbology and more advanced methods of using magical essence of plants to make medicinal properties - since Bayon's specialty in alchemy was spell potions rather than the medicine after all. Maple was taught how to be more attuned as her Master's familiar and their linked mana energies as a whole. Sure, she was an artificial familiar and not a being made of mana like Fiyero or Khryia, but she still had the mana to qualify as a familiar. As for Estelle, they taught her more tricks on how to help control and protect her mana nodes from the miasma. They all knew that at the edge of the island, where the big wide sea began, the miasma was at it's thickest, worse than even the forest. With that, and some specially preserved fruits from the forest in their packs, it was time to ride off to destiny once again.

"It'll probably take three days of flying to get to the ocean." Estelle's eyes sparkled despite the obvious and immense danger that this held. "We're going to see if your mana stone can work on the barrier, Clover." Maple was excited too, this was a special mission they were on, kept almost top secret from the rest of the world who remained ignorant. Why didn't anyone else but the Anima know about the Barrier? Why did the vast majority of humans and mages not believe such a thing existed? "Maybe a long time ago the ruling class of humans used distortion to control the memories of their subjects." Maple thought curiously. "And then when the Ruling Family died out, those memories were never restored and thus everyone forgot it existed?" The name whispered across Estelle's lips. "The Neumeyer family once rule this island with their royal blood. Now, of course, they've all been wiped out."

The kitten had a busy three days. She learned lots from the people of Anima, who had been more than eager to welcome Clover and Maple into their home. Clover learned all about the different plants and their applications in medical uses, which would surely be useful to show Rosemary, the healer. Maple too, learned an abundance of new things and how she could further improve to serve her Master. "You don't fit in with them," the Bird Man said to her one day while she was mixing a large pot bubbling with sage and milkweed. "No," Clover replied quietly, "Clover knows, but Clover has no where else to go." Maple and Estelle were close, it was clear that Clover did not fit into their puzzle, no matter how much Maple insisted and Estelle pretended.

"Well, you could stay here?" He suggested, a mischievous grin painting his bird like lips. Clover thought about it and shook her head, "No, Clover will return to Min City." Not today and perhaps not tomorrow. "Something missing that Clover needs to find," not her missing memories, no, something far more important, not that Clover could remember what or who it was. "Someone is waiting for Clover," someone needed her, but who? Why couldn't she remember? "Hey, you're gonna turn it sour if you mix that hard!" Ita warned the kitten, shooing her away from the bubbling brew. "You just have to let it simmer, like this. Patience is key," the kitten nodded, perhaps not as patient as she liked to pretend to be.

The following day, they departed, Clover armed with a new book on herbology, Maple with a new fighting technique, and Estelle, with who knows what. They rode on a magic sword, Estelle explaining that it would take three days, where Clover would hopefully try to dismantle the barrier using the mana stone in her chest. She swallowed nervously, wondering if there was a limit to how much mana the stones could absorb and what that could possibly be. What if an enemy was waiting for them? Or worse? What if a great big dragon appeared and swallowed them whole? Clover wrinkled her nose at the thought that smelly-she blinked. Smelly what? Where was her mind going with that? "Clover, are you alright?" Maple asked, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Clover nodded, "Headache," she replied, the slight twinge in her temples turning into a throb. Maple went through Clover's belt, pulling out honeysuckle. "The leaves, remember what Ita said? It should help soothe headaches." Clover plucked a petal off and placed it on her tongue, hoping that the soothing properties would make the terrible pulsating in her head go away.

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

Three days to reach the ocean. They were going to have to go fast, then, weren't they? Estelle breathed deep, remembering what she was told. Try to keep the mana nodes primed with mana ready to fire, but don't actually fire. Apparently by doing that you can help prevent the flow of miasma into your system since the nodes are already filled with mana. The only problem was maintaining that state at night since she would have to fall asleep and no longer be able to keep her mana armed and ready. Or worse, she could accidentally fire spells while asleep because the mana would already be set up for that. All in all, there wasn't any perfect solution and yet still the trio flew over the grassy green plains of this nameless island.

"Is she okay, Maple?" Estelle asked as they set up camp near the edge of a canyon one night. Estelle was preparing their magical sigils to keep them invisible. Two days away from the ocean they were, and they had to keep on trucking on as best as they can. "Do you want to try your magic?" Maple asked, hugging her sister worriedly. "Clover, maybe I can help with the headaches." With how close they were, Master and Familiar were almost at the point of being able to tell what they were thinking just by looking at each other's eyes. Their teamwork was nigh flawless now, wasn't it? So Estelle murmured the incantation and hardened the lock on Clover's memories, making the fog thicker and harder to navigate. "There, I hope that helps." She pat Clover's fur and helped her to sleep, only to then suffer from the miasma in her mana nodes, prompting Maple to rub her back and whisper caring words.

The next day they came across a dome of encased magic. It was almost like the one that the escaped Management from the Underdark had made, except this one was built in the opposite direction. Could it be the same people? "Change of plans, we're going storm this place first." Her light blades exploded on the surface, causing it to shimmer and show the translucent blue hexagons but still, the shield held. But there was a chance, however slim, that maybe there could still be some survivors in here, wasn't there? Sure, she might have betrayed her family but she still wanted to break in and slaughter them! That was what the True H- Dazzle would do, right?

Circling around, Estelle could feel it, she could feel two massively powerful mana stores from within the facility. "Erika and Fearsome are here, I can sense their mana." Estelle whispered mostly to herself. Maple shot her a look of both alarm and worry - so this meant that they were alive, didn't it? "Should we let her remember?" Estelle mouthed to Maple, who seemed to shake her head. "Not if her Underdark memories come back with it!" For now though, they had no time for that. Because a certain someone was near the Shield too, grinning eerily at them as he rode up on an army of magical bats. Manfred Remington. "Oh my, it's you three. I was thinking of breaking this shield and getting in, but perhaps we could cooperate this once." Estelle saw red - her biggest enemy was here, and he was proposing that they work together to beat the last survivors of the Underdark? "Should just kill you, really." Estelle grinned widely, dazzling light flashing around her. "What's stopping me, huh, Manfred?"

The strongest mage in all the land smiled at them one by one. "Because what happens if you lose, dear Estelle? What happens if you lose and then I can take both of these cats for my own purposes? No, it benefits us both more if we can work together this time." The grin grew twisted and menacing. "Though I'm surprised a traitor like you would want to save your poor dear sister Erika so strongly." The taunt didn't work, of course, Estelle wasn't that easy to provoke. "Hah. I'm doing it because I believe in Heroism, nothing more!" Her light swords multiplied behind them and she held both Maple and Clover protectively.

❝They say that cats are angels with whiskers.❞

|| Be Brave || Owl City ||

When they landed that evening, it was apparent that Estelle and Maple were worried about her. Maple hugged Clover, rubbing their cheeks together. Estelle did something to help ease the symptoms of the headache, Clover feeling sleepy right after. "Clover is going to bed now," she said, laying her cape down to curl up on top of. It was a warm spring evening, so the kitten wasn't worried about getting cold. Maple snuggled up next to her, rubbing Estelle's back to help ease the symptoms of her Master. They slept side by side, Maple using her magic to conjure up a blanket in order to cover them, just in case the temperature dropped while they slept. Clover awoke early, the sun just rising. She tip toed away from the blanket and off the beach in order to scrounge around for breakfast, her stomach growling.

The kitten closed her eyes, her body feeling strange once more. Her head felt heavy and her eyes were half lidded, as though she were walking in a daze. Into the dense forest she went, sniffing out breakfast. From her lessons in herbology, Clover could now discern the difference between poisonous berries and mushrooms and brought back the good ones. She waded in the early morning tide, using berries to catch fish and bring them back. Once she returned to the beach, Clover used to rocks to start a fire, slowly grilling the fish over the heat. She nibbled on berries, but for the most part, wasn't all that hungry, the strange fog in her head making her feel more nauseous than anything. Maple began to stir at the smell of food, the sky slowly turning blue. "Clover, you did all of this?" Maple asked, impressed. Clover smiled, nodding, "Clover caught fish for Maple and Estelle!" Her sister scritched her underneath the chin, the kitten purring, her tail swishing.

Estelle was waking too and once they ate a hearty breakfast of grilled fish and mushrooms, with berries for dessert, they headed back onto the magical flying sword and zoomed towards the barrier, Estelle seeming determined to get them there in less time. They passed over a strange dome floating near one of the islands, Clover's stomach clenching at the sight of it. She didn't have mana, but her mana stone lit up, sensing the vast amount inside. "Clover doesn't feel well," the nausea made her want to pass out, a slightly familiar smell hitting her nose. Clover wrinkled it, wondering why that smell made her feel so sick. A man, it was a man, he was coming towards them, grinning wickedly. Clover swallowed hard, Maple taking her hand and squeezing it. "He's probably why you don't feel good," Maple assured Clover, glaring at Manfred.

"Master, please don't fight him," Maple begged. "I think you could beat him, but we have more important things," she gesticulated to the dome below and the fact that they had sensed the presence of Erika and Khryia. Maple shook her head, "No, don't give the memories back," she decided firmly. "Clover's better off without them," besides, if they did, there was a chance her sister's heart would go into failure from the stress and they were much too far from Rosemary to do anything about it. "Erika made her choice when she turned my sister loose," if she hadn't, then Clover would not have gone through so much, she wouldn't have been forced to fight, her heart wouldn't have given out, she wouldn't have been humiliated and demeaned by wizards and mages that considered her beneath the status of human.

"No, I don't want her to have them," Maple's resolve hardened. Clover smiled obliviously, squeezing Maple's hand back. "Clover will help," although she wasn't sure what she was helping with.

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

As much as she wanted to just kill him right then and there, they didn't have a choice. Manfred was too dangerous, and fighting here right in enemy territory? That was just suicide. Estelle was strong, she had confidence that she could escape on her own. But she had two others to take care of, and that was going to make things a bit more complicated. "Fine. Let's work together to break this Dome then." He grinned wider, animosity leaking off of him in waves. "Good. Maybe this is simply a precursor to our breaking the Barrier together." No, because he was her enemy. He wanted the Barrier broken for different reasons. He was a villain, and the heroine in Estelle was itching for a chance to go toe to toe with this awful man.

With both of their strongest magic, an explosion of infernal heat and a volley of swords of light, the dome cracked, shield shattering under the might of their immense magical power. A siren blared, no doubt warning the denizens inside of this factory. Estelle grabbed both Maple and Clover, hopping onto a light sword, flying in as Underdark management burst out with both firearms and magic to try to defeat the intruders. Manfred cut them down with brilliant flames each time they tried to challenge him, his might overwhelming. Where was Victoire now? Estelle did not want to know where the wife of the evil man could be hiding. "Let's go! I can sense them!" Zooming through the halls, Dazzle throwing light swords as Maple conjured little poison darts to attack enemies with as they flew at high speeds. The mechanical door was shutting! Estelle threw Clover under, following herself, light blades forcing the door open so Maple could crawl through before it locked shut behind them.

In the open room before the trio of heroes, they could see it, machines made of some special polyfiber material, holding two test subjects within. A dark energy was being pumped into their systems and Estelle's mana nodes screamed at the sight. She fell to her knees, the pain creeping up her spine. Erika was seizing, eyes blank, body already mutated and twisted by the miasma. Fearsome, too, was being transformed into something that was no longer human. "Master? Master, what's going on?" Maple rubbed Estelle's back to try to ease the pain. And then that was where an enemy stepped forth. "My name is Umbral." The caped-wearing villain said with a wide grin. "Head Manager of the Underdark. My, True Heroine, you'll be a fun one to play with." Maple jumped up and clawed at his eyes and one of his guards grabbed her, choking her against the wall.

"My name's Dazzle." Estelle hissed, trying to get up. She eyed Clover, warning her not to do anything. There had to be a way to come out victorious! She had to think of something! Light swords flew up around her, forming a protective shield around Clover, slicing and stabbing at the Underdark's leader. He pressed a button on his wrist, absorbing it with ease. A manastone, why did he have a manastone on his arm? And then the room grew hot and a ball of flame descended right on Umbral's back, vines reaching out to snare the guards. "Sorry, but those are my enemies." Manfred said with a smirk, horribly scarred hand outstretched. "I'd rather beat them on my own, fair and square, you silly fool."

Victoire was standing there, looking as pretty as ever to shield the three, handing Maple back to them. "What are you doing?" Estelle asked, surprised. "Hurry up and get them out, dearies. You can have little Fearsome, we want Erika" As much as Estelle hated them, she knew that the best thing for now was to get out safely with Maple and Clover intact. "Fine." It wasn't like her sister was hers anymore, anyways. And she had a mission - old family wasn't going to get in her way. "Fearsome, you're coming with us!" The mutated man coughed and seized as he was forced onto a light sword. "Let's get out of here!" Estelle yelled, flying up to the sky with her new party of four.

|| Be Brave || Owl City ||

Clover had a feeling that this man was bad news. The smile on his face was wide and sent shivers down her back. From the way Maple and Estelle reacted around him, the kitten had a feeling that she was right. For now they would be working together, but Clover had a feeling it was only because they didn't exactly have a choice. They wanted to defeat the giant dome, whatever it could be. The kitten shivered, having a feeling that it was strangely familiar, but if she tried to prod back, a dark fog covered everything, making her mind feel slightly numb. "Clover has seen something like this before," she mused aloud, prompting Maple to shake her head. "No you haven't," Maple replied quickly, "you've never seen anything like this."

She hadn't? Oh well, it seemed familiar, but no doubt Clover was mistaken. Maple was much smarter after all and she did have all of her memories. "Clover will help defeat dome," she decided, knowing she couldn't do much, but she did have her mana stone, which could absorb and deflect any attacks. They headed down, an explosion breaking open the dome. The mages inside scrambled out of the way for the most part, believing themselves to be free. Estelle and Maple cut the enemies down for the most part, with Clover doing her best to absorb the mana of any attacks that flew their way. Her mana stone shone brightly, no doubt eager to be back in action after such a long hiatus. Why did Clover have it inside of her? She wondered for the umpteenth time.

Suddenly, Estelle grabbed the kitten, flinging her underneath a doorway and following behind. Maple had to take another door, the three of them running towards another room. She could sense something within there, something dark and ominous. Clover swallowed hard, her tail nearly getting stuck underneath the door. "Clover does not like this!" She decided, Maple taking her hand. "It's alright, it's almost over," her older twin promised, leading her deeper into the darkness and to another room. Two figures lay suspended inside of a strange fish tank, although whether they were human or not was beyond the kitten. Her eyes latched on to one in particular, silky black hair floating in an ethereal halo around her. Just the sight of the human made Clover's chest contract. The kitten took a step back, her head throbbing. "Clover?" Maple asked in alarm, letting her guard down for a second. She was surrounded, the strange mage having trapped them.

Suddenly, that man had returned, bringing another with him. A shield formed around the kitten, protecting her from the attack. Things happened so quickly that the kitten barely had time to process the fight and by the time it was over, the pain had faded, the fog returning. They would be returning with someone called Fearsome, a mage who was just waking up from a very long slumber, his hair askew, his form clad in nothing but a white sheath. Maple conjured up a cape, placing it around Fearsome's shivering shoulders. Another light sword zipped through the room, stopping for them to clamber on. There were four now, riding Estelle's sword, leaving the place called the Underdark with a confused mage.

"Does Clover know monster?" She asked Maple, uncertainty in her voice. "No," Maple shook her head, "you've never met that person before."

❝And we're on a quest to break the barrier and save the world!❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#007F03 ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #B20070

|| The Blond Executioner ||

Estelle was screaming as she fought to keep in control of her light sword. The miasma was coming in thick off the waves of the rippling shores almost like oxygen, filling the air, filling even her own body with the unknown toxin that twisted everything it touched. She screamed, her spine feeling as if it was being stretched apart and cut into eenie teenie tiny pieces as the pain soared and seared. Yet she held on because she knew that they didn't have a choice, they had to get away before Manfred decided that the best thing to do was betray this so-called alliance and go after them. And so, screaming in horrible agony, Estelle continued to fight against her body, her power, to make sure she could complete the escape home.

"There Master! An island, we have to stop there!" They were desperately fleeing now to try to get away, using distortion magic to cover their leftover residue tracks in near blind panic. Before then Estelle's eyes followed where Maple was pointing and so the sea flight was over, the poor Dazzle crash anding into the island's sandy breach. It was small and yet she could feel it. They were oh so close now to the end of it all, to the Barrier that kept them all wondering about what was outside, to the Barrier that locked them in like they were pigs in a pig sty with no hope of of any kind of freedom but to be killed.

Fearsome was once a normal looking human, perhaps a bit more fancily dressed than others for sure. Now there was a dark rust growing behind his ears, his teeth had become more like fangs, his skin looked blemished and scarred from surgeries done in the past. Even now dangling off his spine were needle tubes that had come from the strange machine itself. Estelle sat there, hugging her knees to her chest as the pain was spiking to even higher heights. "How are you feeling, Fearsome?" The test subject stared at her for a few moments and he coughed, trying to appear as if he was okay. The attempt failed, he looked as if he had been through quite the harrowing experience.

"It's... bad." The former champion of the Underdark admitted. "What were they doing?" He gestured a scaled arm around, wincing as the pain got worse, he was shivering now. Was it withdrawal? Was it pain? Maybe a mix of the two, or maybe something else entirely. "Miasma experiments." Fearsome explained through grit teeth as he clung to himself, to the blanket Maple made for them. "To see if humans could... could live... with the mana replaced by miasma continuously floating in. It... it failed, and the grl, Nightbloom, she was suffering. We b-both were..." The former poise of Fearsome had all but run out and all that was left was a broken man, experimented on for nearly months now. "Th... the Barrier..." She could almost see it, mocking them from up above. "We have to ... break it."

❝They say that cats are angels with whiskers.❞

ɗιαƖσgυє cσƖσя:#A4D3EE ♙ тнσυgнт cσƖσя #FFADB9

|| Be Brave || Owl City ||

The beach they landed on belonged to a small, uninhabited island close to the border, where the barrier kept them inside. Here, Clover could feel it, the buzz and hum of the magical force field that trapped them inside, limiting their world, keeping them at war with the humans. As the others settled down in the sand, Clover went over to Fearsome, knowing she was the only one that could try to treat his wounds. "Clover will fix," she said, gesturing to the tubes and needles sticking out of him. Fearsome sat up, seeming to have next to no energy. That was understandable considering the situation he was in. The kitten began to pluck the strange devices out of the mage, wrapping his wounds one by one. She gave him something for the pain, as well as something to help him sleep. "You're getting really good at that," Maple said with a proud smile.

"Do you think you could help Estelle too?" Maple asked, hooking a thumb in the direction of her Master. Clover nodded, going to check on Estelle. Something was bugging the kitten and she was going to ask in order to set the record straight. "Why did Dazzle not save other girl?" The kitten inquired, rifling through her belt for something to help ease Estelle's pain. "Dazzle is hero, but did not rescue mage? Why did Dazzle let evil man have mage?" Maple swallowed hard, she wouldn't answer this one, considering Estelle's long standing history with her family had never been a positive one. Clover at last found what she was looking for and gave it to Estelle, that sludgy green brew, as well as a small dose of pain medication.

"Clover is going to look for food," she announced, placing her hands on her hips. "Clover," Fearsome smiled sleepily. "You look just like my cat... Ragdoll," his eyes closed, Fearsome drifting off. Maple stiffened, Clover wincing in pain as her head began to throb. "Another headache?" Maple rose, "I'll come with you, maybe the fresh air will distract you?" The two of them went off into the forest in order to look for edible plants. Maple was already making plans to send Fearsome away, back to the mainland. He must have been one of those awful people that hurt her sister and Maple would never forgive him, even if he had been through hell and back with the miasma experiments. When you hurt family, you may as well be hurting Maple herself.

"Maple," Clover started, "is Maple lying to Clover?" Maple looked up, alarmed. "No!" She replied defensively, "I would never!" She reached over, hugging Clover's head to her chest. "I'm just protecting you, so don't worry about it, okay?" Clover nodded, wondering what she needed protecting from but not daring to ask. "Berries," the kitten pointed instead to a bush growing ripe, delicious looking blueberries.
