Introduction

For the past thousand years the fragile balance of Avarinthe has been held, mostly due to the actions of the Summoners of the seven clans and the few humans who realize they are not the enemies. The ever vicious war between the Summoners and the Dark summoners came to a head at the ridge at the edge of the wastes as the hundred or so human warriors that gathered tried to hold off the creatures that poured from the ridge the Summoners and Dark Summoners fought.

Few survived the battle on either side, when Auron the eldest and strongest of the summoners from Maltueen faced off with the Dark Priest and leader of the followers of Essante, Jerim. With his partner Esanee and Myna the summoner and high priestess of Saija. The explosive force of all of the summoners in one place on both sides, facing off caused a rift of power so intense the world quaked from the influx of power. When Auron and Jerim struck at each other with the full force of their power, the explosive force crashed in the center point between the two, the backlash of power happened in two ways, the first was a bit of the combined power lashed out singularly at the two targets, the second was that a tremendous shock wave ensued spreading out for miles in every direction. This then caused several decisions and actions to happen. The first was that Esanee and Myna both stopped fighting, Esanee to watch Myna to act. Jerim used Esanee against her will to take the blast and Auron blocked it With Myna directing and rushing to shield him. She managed to erect a shield around him, a pure violet crystalline wall erected by her and her guardian. That sort of thing needed time and she knew it. The results where three fold, Esanee was killed instantly and Jerim escaped gravely wounded. Auron was spared only seconds and Myna was gravely wounded, both in body and spirit.

The resulting shock wave of power caused catalysts in the battles continuing, destroying nearly all the summoners and their guardians and every human and creature below destroyed, leaving even the land burnt and barren as the wastes themselves.

However the consequences do not stop there as neither does the world stop turning. Saija was spared its summoner but she was injured badly enough that she would not be able to fight for awhile, the humans looked upon the incident with scorn and instead of seeing what happened, did what they always did, and what was easiest. They blamed the clans and summoners for the loss and damage. Each clan that lost its summoner had to follow its customs and mourn the loss and appoint a new summoner to the clan. The immediate threat of the dark summoners was pushed back but corruption still flows through the land and threatens its people and with so few to take up the mantle it is a busy and dangerous time for the remaining summoners and a difficult one for the new ones that must be taught as a new group of summoners is about to join forces.

The Factions


The Human Empire

Human kind as they are often called are the most populated race on the planet, consisting of six major towns and cities spread across the globe. The capitol of which is Valaria, a beautiful city which holds the human king and the strongest military force of any of the cities.

These people have varied beliefs which occasionally cause conflicts among themselves, choosing to worship any one of the eight gods, thought it is rare for a god or goddess to give his or her favor to a human.

They are not gifted with unique powers such as the clans are though their numbers make them a dangerous enemy which they have proven to be. Partially due to their own ignorance and cruely and partially due to the Dark Summoners who constantly strike at the human kind from the shadows. Unfortunately the ones who are blamed are the summoners from the other clans more often than not. This had bred hate and fear centuries old and deep seeded resentments because of their favor with the gods and the power that they wield.

That being said not everyone is this way, some have realized that the summoners spend their time hiding their existence from human kind and have never done anything to harm them intentionally and constantly risk their lives to protect human kind from the corruption and what exactly would happen if all the Summoners where gone.

Humans are capable of the most compassion as well as the heights of cruelty and once in a very long while a human is gifted with a gift from one of the clans, a pendant from their god which allows for passage through the barrier. Records show this has happened twice in the last five centuries.

The Clans

There are seven forest clans that make up the race of people sometimes referred to as the elves, in reality they are humans who have been blessed and segregated from others. However over time they are less human though their appearance says otherwise. They are stronger and more durable than the average human. This is more a course of evolution and what they have had to do to survive. Milena of hate has caused the rift between the two peoples. Now there are the forest clans and human kind.

Each of the seven clans worship a different deity which exemplifies in that clan and even those not blessed and touched as the summoners are have been may have a little touch of the god or goddess' power. This may show in minor ways such as empaths, or being just a little faster than anyone else, or just a little more accurate. Without being touched by the god or goddess the abilities are there but not so noticeable.

Each clan must have one summoner, a clan may consider a couple individuals as especially gifted and groom them to become the next summoner should something happen to the current one, and this is in fact a common occurrence. These individuals are typically referred to as Priests or Priestess' of the clan. If they never have the option to become a Summoner or do not meet the requirements of the ritual then they will continue on to become elders of the clan to guide their peoples and care for the spiritual needs of the clan.

High Priests and Priestesses are individuals who have reached adulthood, completed their training and have not become summoners for one reason or another. They have been taught in the ways of the clan, the rituals and rights and are important leaders of the clan and teachers to the younger generations.

Each of the seven clans have their own dynamics, meaning they do not all love each other. Saija, the clan of Spirit and Maltueen the clan of Balance often put out the leaders for the seven Summoners. Spirit tend to have more raw power while Balance as the name sake says is more balanced and puts out superior strategists. The two clans are very closely allied.

Youtorie and Shantien are closely allied, however predictably Youtorie and Touvieden do not get along very well. Untalie the air clan can be found in the Toren-bie-en forest and while they get along reasonably well with the other clans are far from them. While Maltueen the balance clan is found in the Faern forests as allied to all the clans it is an accommodating clan and placed as a mid point between the three forests.

Each clan has its own specialty and strengths and weaknesses which is explained more fully below.

The Summoners

Each of the seven tribes appoints a summoner, the summoner represents the clan and they are its strongest warrior. This warrior is not however dedicated to protecting its clan, they are oath bound to protect all of humanity from the corruption that has consumed the wastes and to fight the Dark Summoners, otherwise known as the Essante.

A summoner is created and not born, and their burden is not an easy or comfortable one to bare. In each clan there are one or two people who are 'marked' to become summoners, however the process to become a summoner is not one just anyone can walk. When someone close to a clansmen dies that clansmen has the option to become a summoner.

This is a very simple way of stating it, now to consider the specifics of this statement, the two must have a strong lasting bond. A mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter, wife or husband and on very rare occasion life long friends may undergo the process. If the bond is not strong enough the new summoner will die and the soul of the deceased will slip into the next world.

If the bond is strong enough the choice may be made to become a summoner and undergo the ritual of binding. This ritual binds the soul of deceased to the living clansmen. The Living Clansmen becomes a Summoner and the Soul becomes his or her spirit guardian.

With this the Summoner gains several special abilities, some which are common to all summoners and others which are more individualized. No two summoners, even two from the same clan are alike, just as no two people are alike. First the summoners all gain a telepathic link between themselves and their guardian spirit with it, the ability to communicate with each other without words, to share ideas, words and thoughts to a certain extent. The Summoners all share the gift of levitation and the ability to conceal themselves from humans for any length of time as long as they are conscious.

From this point there are several more abilities a summoner would get, but these are the ones who differ from summoner to summoner. The first depends upon the god or goddess they serve. A summoner from the earth clan, Shantien may gain the ability to manifest and control the earth element in tangible ways. To start with it may only be to sense the world around them in a more substantial way, to know the trees and the animals, as they grow in strength and power they may be able to manifest its energies to attack with, to cause rock falls and earthquakes.

The second way the Summoner gains power is through their guardian. As explained below Guardian's have very unique abilities of their own, however summoners are bound to their guardians, their very souls changed and connected. This means that as their bond solidifies and time goes on, the summoner may draw upon the power of their guardian themselves in smaller ways. So a guardian with the power of fire, may over time lend to the summoner being able to wield that power with less potency than the guardian can.

The Guardians

Guardians are simply put souls of the departed bound to a living person. These spirits are not forced but have agreed to undergo the ritual and are bound to a person they where very close to in life.

As stated above a guardian spirit can be bound to a relative such as a mother, father, brother, sister, daughter, son or in rare cases life long friends. Guardians can be any age and have greater insight into life after death though have not yet seen the other world.

Guardians are gifted with special abilities which typically have some correlation to the type of person they where and are and how they died. It is common to see elemental abilities but that is not the only way power manifests, though it is always a tangible, harness able ability. So a guardian who drowned to death may have manifested control over water.

Beyond this guardians have the ability to exist to their summoners without manifesting or they may manifest in one of two forms, the first being their human form which looks as they did when they died. The second being a mist or fog, in this form is when they fulfill their primary purpose.

The primary purpose of a guardian is to draw the corruption out of the world, the most common targets of corruption is human kind. While in their mist form they can draw corruption out of any living thing and pull it into themselves. By doing so they purify the target.

Guardian spirits can only be seen by other Summoners and Guardian Spirits while in their spirit form, while can be seen by all when in their mist form.

The Followers of Essante

Otherwise known as the Essante or the Dark Summoners. They are summoners from the 7 clans who have gone bad. Either growing to loathe human kind or embracing the corruption they where once sworn to rid the world of. Whatever the reason they are a small but powerful group of summoners who follow the dark god Essante.

These individuals have all the powers of the summoners, having the ability to cloak themselves from humans and to levitate. However these individuals have forsaken their gods and pledged themselves to Essante, in doing so they have been given blessings from Essante which can be quite substantial. They can walk in the wastes freely, the creatures of the wastes will typically not attack a Dark Summoner, and will typically do as the Dark Summoners wish. However as with dealing with dark creatures this is only true to a certain extent. If the creature senses weakness they will without a second thought turn on the summoner.

Dark Summoners can also spread corruption beyond the wastes, in fact that has more or less become their prime directive, to spread the corruption and in effect the rule of their dark god. In addition the power their guardians wield has become corrupted and a dark shadow of what used to be. While the ability might not have started off as a thing of pain and destruction, it certainly is now. Though even in this there is variety, and the power can vary quite a bit usually stemming from whatever their gift used to be.

The power of a dark summoner is usually a little stronger than that of a normal summoner but as with all things in darkness, they have a hard time getting along together and always after more power and never afraid to stab someone in the back to get it. While summoners are quite adept at working together and can trust and rely on each other.

Places

First of all lets look at the World Map, it will be an invaluable resource in telling where everything is: The Map

The Oasis

The Oasis is a sacred place found at the end of the desert, if the wastes was described as a place of pure evil the Oasis would be its opposite. Once a month every summoner and his or her guardian must make the journey to the Oasis and enter the sacred waters there to cleanse themselves from the corruption. Only a Summoner and his or her guardian can enter the Oasis or the pool. Anyone else that would try, would meet with a barrier similar to the barriers that guard the clan's forests, and if forced may be met with consequences of injury or death. The gods protect it and let none but those with their favor enter. Dark Summoners may know its location which is more than anyone else does aside from other summoners, and are forbidden from entering.

The Wastes

The Wastes are a dark and dangerous part of the world, home to the Dark Summoners. The place is filled with shadows and it is said to enter is to die, its not far off. There is life in the wastes, not human or clan though. The beings that live in the wastes are monstrous creations, sometimes said to be demons and by pure description its not far off. Thought most lack any intelligence they are horrid, cruel creatures who would sooner kill a person than look at them. There are rumors of others who are as beautiful as they are horrible but none have lived to tell the tale so it is just unsubstantiated rumor. It is filled with the corruption that would tear the world apart if it could, and though no one knows exactly where, in the wastes is the Black Citadel. A huge city which is the home to the Dark Summoners, it flies above the surface and never leaves the wastes, it is said that only a Dark Summoner knows how to find it.

The Religion ::The Circle ::

The religion of the people is an old and mostly peaceful practice. There is no question that the gods exist, their presence is felt too much for it to be ignored, however not everyone follows the same deity. This of course leads to some conflict, though most can accept the worship of another deity as long as that deity is not the dark god Essante. The practice of the 7 deities is very similar. Services are held twice a month to each deity where in people gather en mass at the designated temple. During this time the high priest or priestess calls to the seven elements that represent the seven gods.

Wind, Water, Fire, Earth, Air, Lightening and Balance, they do this by lighting a candle for each element which is placed at a designated point of the star within the circle. The seventh element and and candle held by the high priest or priestess which represents the deity being worshiped. Each other candle which has its representing color is held by a specially selected member of the temple and they stand in the proper location waiting for their time to be evoked. Once the circle is cast the high priest or priestess sets his or her candle in the center of the offering table which is carefully arranged with fresh fruit and vegetables, and raw offering of harvested grains. Such as wheat and rice.There is a large chalice which is filled with wine and in the center the place for the high priest or priestess's candle. She or he would then pick up the chalice and start the prayer which involved everyone gathered. The prayer always starts with Merry meet, from there the words are not written as the prayer comes from the heart and would involve everyone gathered.

Incense is often burned during these rituals and what is burned can vary depending upon the priest or priestess and what prayer they send up to the god or goddess during that ritual. Once done the high priest or priestess would go to each point of the star and offer the chosen standing there a sip of the wine. Once everyone else has drunk of the wine the high priest or priestess finishes it and sets it back on the offering table. Then she would speak to the people gathered, it is the intent to bring everyone into the words being spoken, for it to be relevant to those gathered and to draw them in, instead of speaking at them. There is no set time but each priest or priestess typically only speaks for fifteen to twenty minutes. If it becomes repetitive or boring the purpose is lost. Then he or she would finish with closing the circle, starting with the last element to be called, then finishing by speaking the words 'Merry meet and marry part and merry meet again' Those gathered are expected to recite the words back, then all are free to depart.

After a ritual it is customary for the temple to arrange a feast, food and drink for all gathered. The worship is over but the god or goddess not to be forgotten. The people are expected to eat, and drink and socialize and have fun.

Every worship ceremony is very similar with minor differences for the variation between gods an goddess' however the basic structure is similar. When not in a service the high priests and priestess' care for the temples, and teach others. If they are apart of the clans they become powerful and wise leaders of the clan council.

Anyone at anytime may do what is referred to as a blessing. It helps if they have some connection to the god or goddess but it is not necessary for it. A blessing consists of calling a small circle, and one does not need a person for each point to call a personal circle. The candles however are necessary. Then returning to the center of the circle the person who has started the blessing would burn incense, what kind would depend on what they are asking for, different herbs have different meaning and properties. Sage and lavender is common for its protective properties.

The Followers of Essante

The religious practices of the followers of Essante differ from the practices of the other gods. They do not draw a circle nor do they pay respect to the other gods. In fact they could not care less about the other gods. They serve only themselves and Essante, they have an offering table similar to that of the other gatherings and offer with one black candle. That is placed in the center of the table, then the dark priest or priestess would call upon the power of Essante and pray for his favor and blessing to shower them not with protection but power to do his will. Each of the gathered summoners would hold a small black candle to represent their devotion to the god they serve. The dark priest or priestess would then give their sermon like the other clans do and then each member would approach the dark priest or priestess and he or she would take the candle from them and bless them to go on and spread the power of Essante to every corner of the world. To please essante and ever serve his will.

If a dark priest or priestess and occasionally other followers have pleased Essante enough or have drawn his attention it is not uncommon for the god to appear to them and on rare occasions to an entire congregation and to bless or punish his worshipers for either doing well or for disobeying him.

The Clans

::Youtorie::

The clansmen of the Youtorie clan worship the fire and war god Youtorie, he is described as headstrong and impulsive with a volatile temper that can singe anyone who is stupid enough to get in the way. When he appears to his followers he usually takes the form of a battle worn middle aged man. He like his followers value hand to hand combat, are fierce warriors who value strength and find typically think striking from shadows a cowards way to fight.

Youtorie will often bless his followers with abilities such as increased strength, amazing reflexes, the ability to see the vulnerabilities in an enemies defenses or the ability to manifest the element fire.

The Youtorie clan can be found in the Avendale forests along with four other of the clans and is a military clan. As such it has very clear alliances and those who they are not strongly allied with they are neutral with yet are not openly with war with anyone. They are constantly training to keep their people and the other clans safe from the brutality of the Human Empire.

The clansment of Touvieden worship the water and wisdom goddess Touvieden, she is described as a calm figure of elegance and beauty, as fluid and elegant as the waters she represents. Slow to anger but when she does get angry has a cold ferocity that causes even Youtorie to get out of the way. She values the calm mind and expects her followers to show intelligence and wisdom in all their actions.

Touvieden will often bless her followers with abilities such as the ability to tell unequivabily if they are being lied to or not, a greater sense of their surroundings, telepathic abilities or the ability to manifest the element water and Ice.

The Touvieden clan can be found in the Avendale forests along with four other of the clans and is one of the most passive clans. They would much perfer to learn and grow than engage the Humans in their brutality. They are the keepers of all the clans histories.

The clansmen of Undalie worship the god of Air and Change, he is described as a slight but strong man who's speed can only be bested by Vuuenatae and grace by Touvieden. He is quiet and as flexible as the wind he is master of. He encourages his children to always strive to be as flexible as the wind and to keep their minds open for change is constant and the closed mind will break instead of bend with changing times.

Undalie will often bless his followers with abilities such as increased speed, flexibility, the ability to augment anything that could potentially be a weapon, and weapons themselves, making them sharp(er) and more deadly, or the ability to manifest the element air.

The Undalie clan can be found in the Tauren-bie-en forests away from the other clans. Preferring the solitude and the heights of the nearby mountains. They are the most elusive and most secluded of all the clans.

The clansmen of Shantien worship the goddess of the Earth and Hunt. She is described as a dark haired warrior woman, dressed in leather armor and always carries a bow, as much apart of the forest as it is of her. She is calm and loving, strict but fierce. She urges her children to always better themselves, respect the earth and everything in it even when taking from it.

Shantien will often bless her followers with abilities such as increased endurance, a sense of the forest and everything within it, the ability to communicate with the natural creatures of the world, or the ability to manifest the element earth.

The Shantien clan can be found in the Avendale forests with four of the other clans. They are the best trackers and hunters of the seven clans and tend to prefer the bow and arrow.

The clansmen of Saija worship the goddess of the Spirit and Life. She is described as a woman who looks both young and ageless at the same time, with vine like violet tattoo's that stretch from her hands up her arms down her sides and spiral down her legs to her ankles. She is understanding of all things but forgiveness only comes when there is proof of remorse and attempts of redemption. She teaches her followers that the unknown is not to be feared and only with understanding and thus knowledge can power be obtained.

Saija will often bless her followers with abilities such as Soul Sense(being able to tell where those nearby are by sensing their spirits), Pre and/or Post cognition, Communication with the dead or comatose, Telekenisis or the ability to manifest the element Spirit

The Saija clan can be found in the Avendale forests with four of the other clans. They are the mystics of the world, with a unique insight into the spirit or soul and as such their abilities can vary more than any other clan

The clansmen of Vuuentae worship the god of Lightning and Destruction. He is a firm god which shares may traits with Youtorie. He is however not impulsive or hot headed and prefers to think before he strikes but when he does the strike is fast and deadly. He expects his followers to act with honor, and to suffer no attack by anyone without consequence and tends to be a militant god like Youtorie.

Vuuentae will often bless his followers with abilities such as increased speed, superior accuracy, short range teleportation, or the ability to manifest the element Lightning.

The Vuuentae clan can be found in the Avendale forests with four of the other clans. They are known for their deadly speed and accuracy in battle, easy temperments and vicious retaliation to anyone who attacks them.

The clansmen of Maltueen worship the god of Balance and Strategy. He is described as an elderly tall man with shoulder length black hair. He understands the importance of both sides of a coin and enjoys both the light and the dark that life offers. He expects his followers to think before they act, and to act with intelligence and wit. To not villify darkness nor worship light.

Maltueen will often bless his followers with abilities such as enhanced hearing, superior sense of sight, the ability to see beyond what is normally seen by the human eye and seem to slow things down and see energy patterns so they can see what is going to happen as it is happening(when this is activated the eyes of the user shift and the double star can be seen around the user's pupils), or the manifestation of balance, which is a mixture of light and dark energies.

The Maltueen clan can be found in the Faern forests inbetween the clans of Avendale and the Air clan of the Taren-bie-en forest. They are allied with all clans and provide a meeting place for all clan wide gatherings. They are known for their intelligence, wit and superior strategies.

The clansmen of Essante worship the god of Evil Corruption. He is a tall attractive young man, dressed in black and blood red. He hates the other gods and seeks their destruction, he wishes not to destroy humanity or the clans but to cause them pain and turn them away from their gods and to him or to nothing. He expects his followers to obey his commands, to act without being seen, with intelligence and cunning. If his followers betray his commands or screw up too much he may visit the individual to give them incentive to not repeat the transgressions.

The Essante clan is found in the wastes atop the Dark Citadel. They are known for their cruelty, deception and their goal to destroy the good summoners and to spread corruption to every inch of the world.
