"If life is such a joke why do we live it?"

"It is the only choice. We are born in this wretched world and we try to make as much sense of it as we can, propping up illusions or morality and righteousness. In the end, our nature contradicts our dreams and we feel the punchline. Perhaps the Spirits gave us the Avatar to stop it, but not even the Avatar can change human nature," Hiro told her, his tone almost resigned.

"I could have chosen to go along with that joke. Though I had a promise holding me back. An old friend promised to see me again."

Behind his mask, Hiro's eyes widened. Could she be? No, she was dead and wasn't coming back. He had seen the bodies, smelled them burning from the fires of his brother's and their father's soldiers' making. He had begun to realize the truth about humanity then. He gave her a hollow laugh, one devoid of all mirth.

"I promised an old friend I would see her again. She died. Killed by my own family and their soldiers."

He ignored one of Butterfly's soldiers, but he responded nonetheless as himself and his men left, leaping through the trees as they did, like real spirits and shadows.

"Then the race is on. It will be better we take different positions if we do not want to fight each other as well as the Avatar. His group may only head in two directions: the mountains or the forest. My men are already positioned in the forest. If you take position in the mountains, then he will run into one of us."

"I promised an old friend I would see her again. She died. Killed by my own family and their soldiers."

Hei sat confused. Was that him? No. He was still serving in the fire nation army. He wouldn't be this mercenary who considered life a joke. Besides, if he wasn't a soldier anymore he probably retired an settled down already or...was dead. She remembered the day she found him vividly. He was near death. Her second parents back to health and she was left to watch him. She smiled slightly. That person was someone she considered a friend.

"Then the race is on. It will be better we take different positions if we do not want to fight each other as well as the Avatar. His group may only head in two directions: the mountains or the forest. My men are already positioned in the forest. If you take position in the mountains, then he will run into one of us."

"Geez...it's not my decision. Bai Xue is the leader of this group." She mumbled. Bai Xue was still glaring after the Blue Spirits. "So boss. What are we going to do?" Someone asked Bai Xue. It was the spy. If he had returned it meant the Avatar was constantly with someone. No reason and way to attack the Monastery now."Considering our numbers. We'll split up. One in the mountains. Another the forest this will double our chance of running into the avatar." Bai began splitting the group up. She saved Hei for last. "You can pick wherever you want to go. I'll see you soon kid." Then the red haired leader left with the group heading into the forest. Obviously she had a bone to pick with the Blue Spirits.

Hei watched her leave and then climbed to the top of a tree. She remembered her father telling her of a time when the fire nation army burned paths through forests. There should be a forgotten path between the mountain and forest. With that thought Hei plunged into the forest as well.

When she reached her destination there were only bushes and rocks for cover. She selected one near the path at random and sat behind it. Nearby was a mountain spring. It's pristine water standing out against the scarred ground. It was beautiful, but Hei had to remain focused on the mission. "Now begins the wait." She looked around. Even if the avatar didn't come this way she could easily have run to the forest or mountains if the avatar began to fight with either group. I may have said it was a competition but I can't tolerate having my target snatched away from me.

Avatar Zhi

The Avatar looked over to Zira, and gave her an annoyed glance. "I very much doubt you would have the time to teach me actual firebending before the mercenaries are upon us, Sifu Zira. If I do not make an appearance outside the temple soon enough, no doubt they shall try to storm the monastery. I will have to work with my earthbending, and what I know of waterbending."

Truly, it was no one's fault but Zira that he had yet to progress in actually bending any fire. It was an unfair analysis, perhaps, given Zira's concerns about his intent to accelerate his elemental training. Still, she had made the choice to prolong his training in the very basics of firebending.

Next, his eyes turned to Bo. "I am not about to abandon these people, Sifu Bo. But...I will keep your words in mind. If the mercenaries prove too numerous for us to handle, then a strategic retreat may be called for. But not until we know for sure our chances against these bandits."

The Avatar sat in contemplation for another few moments, working on a plan of action. To have a successful preemptive strike on the mercenaries, their distraction team would have be able to blend in, more or less, and their ambush team would have to strike hard and fast, before the mercenaries even knew what hit them. Hm...

"Gao," Zhi turned his gaze over to his longtime mentor and friend. "If you have an ideas for our plan, I'm all ears. What did you wish to do with Harumi?"

Wei Jingshen

Wei watched as the Avatar casually and clearly brushed aside the Firebending mentor, Zira, with no regard for her feelings. He felt initial anger and disappointment at this display of arrogance, and quickly and silently moved over to his Firebending tutor and spoke to her.

"Zira, is it? I understand you feel anger, and if I were you, I'd be considering abandoning the Avatar. However, please don't. He needs us all, and the only way we can stop him from being a tyrant on this world is by influencing him. Help me". He nodded at the mentor, and walked to the Avatar.

"Zhi, I have a proposal. I suggest that you and your mentors leave through the tunnels while the others hold off the mercenaries. Then, if anything go's wrong, you will not be captured or worst and we have not abandoned the Sages. However, the choice, is yours." He bowed, and winked at Zira and Bo. He hoped the Avatar would choose his course of action.

Heibachi

A few minutes later, Heibachi walked onto the deck of the ship and approached the pirate captain. She stopped next to him, and for a moment, merely observed the sea surrounding them, and the nearby port that was growing closer and closer to the ship with each passing minute.

"Do you have a plan, for what we do once we get to the Earth Sage Temple?" Heibachi politely, or at least polite for her, inquired of him, turning her gaze over to the captain.

Ronshi 'the Kraken' had proven to be a most...colorful individual, to say the least. Heibachi had never met a man quite like him before, and now she wished she hadn't. He was a frustrating person to deal with, and he and his crewmembers lacked any sense of restraint or composure. Not long after boarding his ship, some drunken fool had attempted to...romance her, to put it lightly. But after a swift beatdown, that cretin hadn't bothered her again; nor had anyone else on the ship, for that matter.

Still, the fact that the crew was mostly leaving her alone now, didn't help soothe her anger. The sooner this mission was over, the better! While Heibachi would not dare to question the wisdom of her Lord, there was no doubt that this mission was truly testing her patience. Being stuck with the pirate captain was not a welcome event. So the sooner he captured and delivered the Avatar to King Otoki, the sooner she could finally leave this wretched hive of scum and debauchery.

Zira Zellik

Zira eyed the man named Wei as he came over to talk. 'Oh joy... What does he want?' She wondered, already slightly annoyed. She diminished her fire imp and crossed her arms.

"Zira, is it? I understand you feel anger, and if I were you, I'd be considering abandoning the Avatar. However, please don't. He needs us all, and the only way we can stop him from being a tyrant on this world is by influencing him. Help me." He said once he'd reached her.

Did he seriously believe she'd abandon Zhi just because they had had a misunderstanding on each other's parts? Zira would never leave Zhi just because he was being a bit stuck up. 'cause he was kind of stuck up every day.

"Don't worry, once I set my mind to something, I do not back down. I will train the Avatar in his firebending until I feel his is ready. I have dealt with his tyrant ways and fits for some time now, so I don't see this as more than a mere tantrum on his part." Zira informed.

Once he left, she could here him speak to the Avatar before winking at both her and Bo.

Yun remained silent while the other spoke, still stroking his chin as he considered the terrain around the mountain and how best to ambush the enemy force. There high ridges over the winding paths were quite the advantage, but also a risk if they did indeed have earthbenders with them. But that chance seemed low, when any earthbender could find far greater rewards in the direct service of a warlord rather then a mercenary company.

He blinked out of his reverie as the airbender offered a new plan.

"No." Yun said simply. "The Avatar must been seen. He must show the world that he is not hiding. What advantage we lose in numbers we make up with in initiative, terrain, and bending abilities. We need only to rout them back down the mountain. And if their numbers to prove to be too great an advantage, we will be able to retreat far more quickly then they can advance. I am sure the Sages can provide us with maps of the region to help us find a path out, while leaving a trail for them to pursue us away from the temple. If the attackers do not see the Avatar for themselves, they will continue on to siege the temple."

He paused, looking to Zhi once again. "The choice is yours, of course, young Avatar. You must be decisive in your actions."

King Bai

Deep within the Omashu 'palace'--which, in reality, was nothing more than a furnished up former summer home of the Imperial Family, which King Bai had seized to use as his official palace--King Bai held his council. The council itself considered of the high-ranking generals of the Omashu army, the most influential and powerful nobles of the Omashu Royal Court, personal friends and advisers of the King, and other important officials of the Omashu fiefdom. The King looked at all the assembled people, as if studying them all for a moment, before he officially began the meeting.

"Greetings, my friends. I thank you all for coming here," King Bai started, flashing his subordinates a brief smile.

"Now...there is a very important subject that we need to discuss. The new Avatar has been announced by the Earth Sages, and Omashu needs to adapt to that unveiling. This development has been a long time coming, of course, since the untimely death of Avatar Fukoda. Still, it is troubling, all the same...we have no clue what loyalties, if any, the Avatar has to any of the fiefdoms of the Earth Kingdom. We also have no idea how he may view the Kingdom of Omashu.

"Thus, we need to formulate some sort of plan or strategy, in regards to the Avatar. Above all, I believe it is imperative we make an ally out of him. If that can prove feasible. Having the Avatar backing Omashu would lend us a good amount of legitimacy and support from the common folk of the Kingdom. But if that isn't possible...well, we'll need to have some sort of contingency plan, in that case. At any rate, we need to figure out how Omashu shall approach the Avatar situation."

The King finished his speech, and looked over at his council. He waited to hear which of his advisers would speak out first on the matter and offer him some sort of insight or idea.

Shan Tainee

An incredibly beautiful young noble with red locks tied up into an elegant bun was seated in the meeting, together with her adviser and servant, both who looked slightly older then her. But to her, they were close friends. She smoothed down her crisp red dress and brushed off some imaginary dust from the golden hems to relieve her boredom. She was feeling rather restless already.

"Lady Tainee. You mustn't." the adviser whispered to her.

"At ease Mei. I'm still maintaining the image of a noble, aren't I? At least I'm not on the tabletop dancing or anything." she whispered back without taking her eyes what she was doing, an amused smirk playing on her lips. The adviser hide a small smile and nodded before backing to her post behind the young girl.

"Ah... Lady Tainee! A pleasure to see you with us. Still beautiful as always." said a well-dressed man who sat down next to her, the only tell-tale sign that he was a general was the several Omashu General coins pinned onto his clothes. He took one of her busy hands and kissed the back of it.

She smiled politely and pulled back, albeit as slowly as she could so as not to display any abruptness. He wasn't hideous, no, in fact, he was handsome. However, she didn't have any interest in him. She nodded.

"General Zhang."

Another noble who walked by wrinkled his nose when he spotted her bare feet.

"Patience m'lady." her adviser whispered, to which she grudgingly nodded to.

It was then when her pet vules emerged from her dress pockets and crawled up her dress and onto her shoulder. She looked at her servant, who immediately nodded and produced a small bowl of bacui berries before setting it in front of her. With a small smile, ignoring the various disapproving nobles, she fed the vules.

"There you go, Muuk, Min." she cooed before turning her attention to the King Bai of Omashu, who was now speaking.

"Greetings, my friends. I thank you all for coming here," King Bai started, flashing his subordinates a brief smile. Listening intently, the red head did pop a bacui berry into her mouth, but then sat back and decided to take things more seriously. Her demeanor slowly began to change as the King continued his speech.

We also have no idea how he may view the Kingdom of Omashu."

"If the Avatar is here to bring peace, the Avatar should immediately join our forces and met out the tyrant that is Otoki. He has caused us too much loss in the Earth Nation." General Zhang spoke out, banging the table, to several voices that seem to whole-heartedly agree.

"The announcement of the Avatar would be sure to incite a small rebellion in our fiefdom if we do not have him in our grasps." said a noble with worry, again, several others agreed with him.

"With the Avatar, the economy will begin booming again." another spoke out, once more with those who voice out their agreement.

"Lady Tainee-" the adviser began, but was silenced by her mistress's gesture.

"I know Mei. I'll handle this." she assured the older woman and cleared her throat. Instantly, eyes were on her.

"If I may have a voice in this council," she began. "The things that many of you speak are indeed true. Indeed, the Avatar should join us and defeat Otoki. True, there will be rebellion once the population of Omashu finds out that the Avatar has not pledged loyalty to us. It is no lie that our economy will grow if the Avatar decides to join us."

She took a small look around, making sure everyone's attention was on her.

"As His Majesty has said, we know not the allegiance of the Avatar. The Earth Avatar Temple is located up north, where Ba Sing Se is the closest largest fiefdom within his reach. If Otoki had somehow managed to convince the Avatar to aid him, we could be bringing destruction upon ourselves by inviting the Master of All Four Elements into our fiefdom."

"However, if the stories of the Avatar is true, then the Avatar is here to restore balance... balance to our torn kingdom. That would normally mean that the Avatar will NOT be taking sides. The Avatar's goal is to bring us back together, if within his power. However, it would be good to note the tyranny of Otoki will be in OUR favor. He has slain many innocent souls and kidnapped many of our young, no doubt the other fiefdoms experienced the same. He has been on the offensive, backing us into a corner."

She turned to General Zhang and bowed a little before turning back.

"Apologies, but that is the truth. Otoki is powerful, we all know it. Otoki is a ruler with blood in his hands, therefore the Avatar will rule him out, leaving the other two great fiefdoms, either the righteous Omashu or Gao Ling to assist. While we know little of Gao Ling's activities, we know that many of the smaller fiefdoms have fallen under their control due to the tactical prowess of Cheng Shi of the Bei Fong family. What I fear is that with that tactical mind, Cheng Shi may be able to convince the Avatar to aid them, which would spell an end to not just Otoki, but to Omashu as well."

"My fellow councilmen, if there is a hunt, there is no larger one than the hunt for the Avatar. I am sure that the other fiefdoms have sent envoys to try and obtain the Avatar's trust. If we take this as a game of Pai Sho, the Avatar is not just any piece on the board... the Avatar IS the board, making him the true turning point in this war. Not resources, not armies, not great benders, not anything else. The first to obtain the board are the ones who will win this war."

"If this news has reached Cheng Shi, then he without doubt must have sent men for the Avatar. I urge you that we do the same. With Otoki eliminated from the list, it will fall to either us or Cheng Shi to obtain the Avatar's help. It will help to remind you that the Avatar does not take sides. He will do what is best for the kingdom and therefore, we must also do what is best for the kingdom in order to earn his trust."

She took a look around to judge the faces of the many officials sitting in the same room as her.

"I believe we have always been doing all of this for the best of the Earth Nation, yes?"

She looked at the King and took a small bow.

"I have said what I needed, Your Majesty. Now excuse me." she said politely before sitting down and popped a bacui berry into her mouth. The servant leaned forward to talk to her.

"M'lady, that was very well said."

"Yes Xiao," she whispered back, then winked at her adviser, Mei. "Then again, if it wasn't for Mei continuously drilling me with all that information, I wouldn't have made such a speech at all."

"I am honored, Lady Tainee." she bowed.

The red-headed noble known as Lady Tainee now concentrated in the meeting, waiting to see what the next response was.

Avatar Zhi

The Avatar considered Wei's plan, briefly, before dismissing it. "Yun Shi is right. I must be seen by the mercenaries. If just so that they know I am not hiding it out in the Temple, and thus they won't go after the Sages."

Zhi considered his options once more, and bit by bit, he felt a plan slowly coming together. Gao's advice helped all the more.

Finally, he looked back over to his military adviser.

"Yun Shi, I think I have a plan." the Avatar stated, a confident tone to his voice.

"I agree with Gao that we should use Harumi to try to scout out the enemy positions. Once that is done, I propose that Gao, Kai, and myself make up the distraction team. Bo, Zira, Akara, yourself, the Badgermoles, and Wei shall make up the ambush team. My team will go into the forest to trigger the trap set up by the mercenaries....but the moment they strike, we spring a trap of our own. With our combined earthbending power, Gao, Kai, and I should be able to uproot the trees that the mercenaries are no doubt using for cover.

"Once they forced out of such a hiding, the ambush team can strike. Assuming we can find a blind spot from their arrangement, the ambush team can charge in from there. We might be outnumbered, but some of us possess much more skill and experience than those low-grade soldiers, which gives us an advantage. And, of course, the mercenaries won't be seeing the ambush team coming. Then, toward the fight's end, we can use Kun and Wei's badgermole to trap the mercenaries."

The Avatar paused, letting his allies mull the idea over.

"How does that sound?" Zhi inquired.

He thought it a good plan, himself. It might need some refinement and additions, of course, but otherwise it seemed like a workable template. Though he was unsure if Gao's idea of not killing the mercenaries would fit in that well...after all, it would be na intesne and heated battle, and fatal injuries might be unavoidable. Not to mention, of course, that some past Avatars had killed indiscriminantly, for the greater good. Of course, those had been during brutal wars and the like...which the current chaos in the Earth Kingdom was now, too.

Still, that didn't mean that he wanted to kill those bandits just for the sake of it. He didn't want to turn into some sort of bloodthirsty monster.

Yun nodded as he listened to Zhi, a feeling almost of pride in his chest. The boy had been paying attention to his lectures, at least. Of course, the feeling may have also been more akin to relief that he would not need to constantly repeat those lectures. The Avatar was young and honest, now he needed the wisdom of experience to process what he had been taught. And the battles to come would be a bloody lesson indeed.

"The hills and our earthbenders are our best advantage. It is a fairly simple matter to earthbend a landslide as they travel through a narrow pass, then wipe up the remnants. We must strike swiftly and surely. We have the initiative and we must not waste that advantage." He paused for effect, letting his point settle among the group before continuing.

"But, you must not be hesitant to take a life, young Avatar. You have come into a hard world, and the hard men that inhabit it have little respect for mercy and peace. The warlords will respect strength. They must fear you and respect you. There is a place for mercy, naturally, but many a statement can only be shown at the point of a sword. And we do not have the men to guard any prisoners, nor the time to keep them. The Sages are a neutral party, they cannot aid us in battle or it's aftermath. Our best choice is to slay or rout the mercenaries, then depart from the temple before a larger force arrives. We cannot become trapped here in a siege. Your destiny cannot wait any longer."

The forest was a perfect place for an ambush, Hiro noted. Those who could hid themselves in the trees while those who did not have the acrobatic abilities to hide or fight in tree hid in the underbrush. He felt quite confident in his odds. He had thirty-five men in all, ten of them firebenders, ten of them earthbenders, and fifteen of them non-benders. Each of his men were armed with a weapon of some kind, even the benders in order to augment their bending or to have something to fall back on. Hiro, for his part, stood in the middle of the road, swords sheathed and his arms crossed. Just a half mile away was the Earth Sage's Temple.

Perhaps Hiro was a bit cocky, using himself as bait, but his orders had been to deliver the Bei Fongs' invitation first before he tried to captured the Avatar and he would deliver the message. When the Avatar refused, they would attack. It was a simple plan, but then again, Hiro liked simple plans. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Li, perched in a tree with his bow, scanning not down the road, but around the area where his men were stationed. It was important that the ambushers not become the ambushed, after all.
