Introduction
This is you. All of you. You make up this place. You are why it exists. It is why you exist. For here lies Humanity in all its unbridled glory, and hubris and naive brilliance. Mankind in its truest form. For this is where you think, where you dream, where you imagine. For this is where you are born and where you will die. Every possible beginning and every possible end exist here unbound by the insignificant manifestation of what you so innocently call reality and free to be indulged like the pages of a never ending book inside an infinite library. You have always known this place. And you have forever added to its immensity. Every thought, every memory, every imagined fantasy. Every experience youโve ever had, will have or can have is stored here.
Poor child, your contribution to this place is about to end isn't it? No longer will you be able to weave your threads into the tapestry of Human existence. Cut down unfairly by an uncaring fate before your ordained time was up. How very cheated you must feel; So much left undone, so many things left unsaid; To many regrets left unanswered for you to cease to be. All that is left for you now is for you to dream.
Dream, dear child. Dream.
I welcome you.
In 1941 the author and librarian Jorge Luis Borges wrote a short story dubbed La biblioteca de Babel or The Library of Babel. In it existed a realm comprised of an endless library whose shelves contained tomes which held every possible combination of words that can, has or will exist. Your every thought. The knowledge of how to do anything you could possibly dream of. Even the very text you are reading right now. All of it were contained in those countless pages. Much of it was gibberish of course but if you searched long enough, and hard enough the wisdom of the gods could be at your fingertips.
Here, in this celebration of the written word in which any number of creative individual come together craft a story, is a different kind of library. In this tale of several authors exists a world where the collective brilliance and hubris of humanity is on display. Here a collection of unique characters each from a different time and different place awake to find themselves in a vast craggy desert with no end in sight. It is here their journey across the great expanse of human existence begins. Because like the entity that you will come to know very well as our story unfolds said, the place your characters will explore holds the collective consciousness of humanity stretching from every possible beginning to every possible end.
Welcome to Babel.
The Wayfarers. Individuals separated from one another by time and space and reality. People vastly different from each other, no two ever truly knowing the world of the other. Yet for all their differences, in death they share a bond. How and why they will die is as unique and varied as each of their lives, but each are the same in the fact their story is ending before their time as come. Our Wayfarers shall rest. Closing their eyes for the last time, and waking up to infinity.
These are the characters you shall be playing should you choose to join this roleplay. The special thing about Babel is that each character can be truly unique. You could play as a Viking warrior during the age of Ragnar Lothbrok, you could be a politician used to navigating through the authoritarian world of modern China, you could be a simple shopkeeper in the far off future who gazed up into an alien sky or you could be a witness to the failed Kennedy assassination in a reality so very like our own yet so very different. It is up to you who you want your Wayfarer to be, your possibilities are endless.
There should be a commonality among all the characters however. Each are human, and are bound by what it means to be human. No character should be superhuman. Every Wayfarer has their own unique strengths and weakness yes, but no one character should make any other irrelevant. Babel is a roleplay where the accumulated experiences your character has gathered over the course of their life supersedes everything else. Because in Babel the only thing that is constant is you while your journey ahead can flip on a dim.
A certain level of literacy is also requested from you. This roleplay is about exploring what it means to be human and how that changes your Wayfarer as a character. The intellectual aspect of those themes are just as important as the gripping adventure that is to come. Please take this intro as a benchmark on the level of literacy expected of you. It is also requested of you to not use a character from an existing franchise. Please create your own characters and the unique worlds that have shaped them.
But please most of all, have fun.
