Back to the old house

It is going to be a fiasco! five people that once lived or been in a strange house and left it, now must return to battle their inner demons. Or perhaps real demons?

1,155 readers have visited Back to the old house since RPgamergirl created it.

Introduction

Back to the old house:

It’s dead dust breath seeping though splintered doorways. The dark
hiss of long forgotten stations. Endless nights huddled in the death
shed, and tears at bedtime. The house is calling, but you don’t pick
up.

You’ve tried to forget, to make a fresh start and be somebody new,
but it’s all bullshit. Everything that counts for anything went down
in that fucking house. Bad things happened, and you were a part of
it. You left unfinished business. That’s why you need to go back. To
finish it. To end it all.

You would rather not go back to the old house.

But you will.

Taylor is still shaken from her nightmare the night before, she is right now sitting at a coffee shop, infront of her is a large coffee which she has sipped only one sip till now. She is waiting for Raymond Malone, she had not spoken to him for many years after her divorce and leaving the house, but she still remembered them living there together night and day for 3 years as the house was built. However, she remembered their short affair they ran together. She always blamed her paranoia from the affair about the strange occurrences that happened in the house. But the night before she dreamed a strange dream, a nightmare, which it seems that if she won't do something she might be in big troubles. She awoke in cold sweat at 1am in the morning, but she called Raymond, telling him she must meet him at the coffee shop they usually went while living together in the house.

She takes a long breath and sipped another small sip from the cold coffee, but she did not mind. She waited impatiently for him to come and discuss him what he thinks of it and what they need to do. She is guessing that he will try to convince her of supernatural powers that are involved, but she still does not believe it is. The only thing that is strange is that her diary, that is hidden in the house, which has a secret inside. That secret, she thinks, will go with her to her grave.

Raymond Malone

As soon as Raymond Malone's eyes had closed, it seemed, the alarm started braying, and he had to open them again. He pryed them open. He hadn't been sleeping. His sleeping pills had run out too soon and the pharmacy was only allowed to give them to him once a month, doctor's orders. But laying still with his eyes closed still felt better than not doing it, and he had to force himself to open them. The sun in the dusty room was too bright already, coming in through the window in a single square shaft that pooled in the middle of the bedroom floor. His eyelids were like sandpaper. His mouth was a desert. He pulled himself out of bed and into a pair of flannel pajama pants and slippers he had on the end of the bed.

The first thing he did was review the security tapes. From his bed, he stepped immediately to his desk by the wall. On the desk was a pile of junk electronics, an electric hotplate supporting a coffee pot. He hit the button on the side of the hotplate and waited for the coffee to start bubbling. While he waited, he flipped on a bank of monitors arranges along the top of the desk. One of the monitors displayed a rotating series of camera throughout his home and the surrounding area, his live security feed. Everything looked OK...for now. He turned to another screen, and hit a few buttons on the VCR it sat on top of. The old-school VHS video tape inside started to his and warble as it rewound itself at high speed. It made a tick sound, and a twang of tension as the tape reached its end. While as a broadcaster, Malone was aware of how to use the more modern recording equipment, though he specialized in audio, but for his own personal activities outside the broadcasts, he prefered to use the kind of equipment he grew up on. He pressed stop on the VCR, then started the tape again going forward, mostly in high-speed fast-forward, dropping it to regular play speed sometimes to look at something. In a few moments, he'd reviewed the security footage he'd missed since going to lay down about 45 minutes ago.

The coffee pot started to bubble, with the thick, muffled sound of a dirty appliance. He poured it from the carafe into a stained, chipped white mug on the table beside it. He blew on it once, then proceeded to drink it black. He didn't like drinking coffee, and he avoided it when he could. They say it has some health benefits, but also some downsides, and he could get the benefits elsewhere without that. Still, between the insomnia and the medication, it's about the least harmful way to drag his bones through the day and get anything done. Especially since there was something he was supposed to do today, he could have sworn--

Malone curse, dropping the coffee mug on his slipped foot in a panic. The mug rolled off and cracked in half on the floor, with a thunk and shatter. The coffee leached through the brown slipped, scalding his foot. He kicked it off as he dashed out the bedroom door into the bathroom. He dropped some Visine in his eyes, trying to banish the bloodshot look, and ran his short hair under a tap to half-way straighten it. He looked into the mirror. He had a little more than a five o'clock shadow, but there was no time to shave. He was supposed to be meeting her at the coffee shop, practically right this minute. He quickly threw on some cologne to hide that he was wearing last night's clothes, jumped into some jeans and sneakers. He ran awkwardly around the house, quickly grabbing up handfuls of things he might need and shoving them messily in his pockets, and rocketed out the door. Of course, not without stopping to lock about half a dozen locks on his apartment door, but still, quickly.

He almost got a ticket driving to the coffee shop. He finally arrived. and pulled up in the parking lot, then shut off his car. He could see her through the glass front window of the shop. "There she is," he thought, as he slowly started to get out of his car. He looked over, and watched her for a moment, from behind the black-tinted glass of his car windows. He smiled sadly, remembering times with her. At least the ones when nothing...weird...was happening around them. He didn't think he'd be anxious seeing her again, but he was. She was still such a beautiful, assured woman. He suddenly felt very scruffy by comparison, and scratched at his stubbly beard, regretting not shaving, and keenly aware of the stain on his shirt and the threadbare condition of his jacket and the pieces of paper shoved clumsily in his pockets. With a sigh, he adjusted a tiny audio-recording device attached to the inside of his jacket--just in case--and got out of the car.

The walk to the shop door seemed slow. He wasn't sure if she saw him, so he pretended she did and tried to play it cool. The bell over the door jingled as he opened it, and jangled as it swung back closed behind him. He walked quietly up to the side of her table, almost apologetically, and gulped quietly before he spoke.

"T...uh, Taylor...?" he asked nervously, "Hello."

As Taylor was thinking to herself, actually wondered what to say exactly to Raymond after all those years not seeing each other, she had to to talk to him but right now she thought Hey, what exactly am I doing? you think he will really come? . And just like that, like a wish coming true, sort of, Raymond walked through the door of the coffee shop. She watched him as he approached, he actually looked almost the same, even though he looked a bit scruffy and like a dyed color that spent too much in the sun. He seems more pale than she remembered, and even though he looked organized and clean, it seems a bit like he did not sleep much last night. She hopes it was not her fault for calling him in the middle of the night and worried him.

He finally approached her and she gave him a reassured smile that it is her, "Yes, Hi Raymond, I know it been a while but we still remember each other. Have a sit, please. Want some coffee?". She was not telling him anything about him being late or his appearance, she needs him calm and relaxed as telling him what is on her mind. She guessed he might need a coffee so she signaled the waitress to come and when she approached their table she said, "My friend wants coffee too" and she points to Raymond to ask for any kind of coffee he wants. The waitress will nod and will leave to make his coffee.

Than after the waitress left and no one is near them, she chose this table specifically because it was far from any other person in the coffee shop. She leans closer to Raymond and takes a deep breath, "Do you have an idea why I called you?". She looked at him and something in her eyes shows she is thinking about the house, Raymond could almost see it in her eyes if he guessed it already.

"Just plain black coffee," Malone muttered distantly to the waitress, not looking up at her. He was already starting to fidget through his pockets, pulling out the pieces of paper he'd grabbed on his way out of his apartment. There were typed copies of his own notes and correspondence, for the most part, a page or two of quotes from show transcripts, and a couple newspaper articles and black-and-white photos.

"Is it what I think it is?" he asked Taylor, "Because I've got some files...I actually just did a talk, and Ruger of all people, Ruger, I can't believe he thinks he can--" Malone had been getting more and more worked up as he spoke, starting from a rough whisper, to a restrained tone, the speech equivalent of a dam creaking under the weight of a flood. He was nearly starting to stammer again when he broke off suddenly with a ragged sigh.

With hands shaking slightly, he started to smooth the papers against the table, nervously sorting and re-sorting them, glancing up at her and back down to the papers anxiously several times, trying to slow himself down. He took a deep breath, and looked around furtively. He was nervous, and the more he thought about the elephant in the room, the closer he got to panic. He never got used to being nervous, looking over his shoulder, and he was fighting down anxiety more often than not, these days. He felt like he lived his life now on the edge of a nervous breakdown at all times.

Malone lowered he head over the papers, holding his head up with his palms, elbows on the table. The disheveled tangle of his hair fell over his temples, starting to salt and pepper into an early gray, and the shadow emphasized the dark circles under his eyes. His coffee sat forgotten about in a white mug at his elbow, going cold. For a moment, he suddenly looked much older than he was.

"Of all the times he picks to finally take me seriously, that had to be the episode. That lunatic." he finished weakly, in a swallowed mutter, as if half to himself. He slid the papers slightly closer to her. "This is the most current information I could find....assuming you called me here for what I suspect?"

Taylor smiled as Raymond understood her, she blinked as he brought some papers and notes he had. He does look nervous, and actually so was she. But not because what he thought of the house, but because something else. "You continued on researching this?". She fumbles in the papers, glancing them and skimming them about the information. "I did call you for that, yes...." She takes another deep breath and spills it out, almost fast, like she has to say that sentence before she will be dead right there. "But I called you more because we need to go back there and just burn the house!". She than mutters something very silently, "No one should find it....".

The papers has a lot of ideas about the supernatural going on in there, and she sighs. Why is he still thinks this way? he does not remember what they actually did? . She will tell him later, right now she wants him to go back with her. "So, Raymond, will you help me? get rid of that house for good?".

Raymond Malone

"Of course I continued," Malone said, "It's my responsibility, I was head of the building of that thing, that's at the center of it all. What else would I do? I'm not even sure what I thought I might do with it all."

He pointed at one grainy black and white photo. It showed several vaguely Germanic-looking men, with thick mutton-chop beards, wearing boots and suspenders and wool sweaters. They were standing in a field surrounded by trees, that was just barely recognizable. Between them was an odd device

"This one is of the first local surveyors to map the area. These guys came when the nearest town was founded, and drew up all the original property lines. This newspaper article here," he pointed at a laminated yellow paper scrap, "Is from about the same time. There were native groups protesting, land claims. The local historical society. A lot of controversy in the area. The town cartographer's notes are all over the place, he was in a hurry. Look at this photocopy, I...obtained...at city hall. For an entire day, after the date and time, it just says "the hill" and nothing else. The picture was taken the same day."

When she suggested burning the house down, he stopped suddenly, looking slightly stunned, and seemed to debate with himself for a moment. He swallowed slowly and nervously.

"It might work," he admitted, "It...might. And it could be worth a try. But on the other hand, there's something obviously wrong with the house. A bad...bad magnetism around it. If the house was gone, what would happen? Would destroying the house actually destroy the wrongness inside it, or would it just get rid of its container? Perhaps the house is the anchor that holds It down in one place, and now the...the...wrongness can just wander the land doing what it wants."

Malone's words started to tumble out faster, until he was starting to stutter again, as he considered the implications of her suggestion. He rubbed his eyes. He wasn't even sure he was making sense to himself at this point, much less to Taylor. He felt delirious. And tired. Not just tired in his body from lack of sleep, but tired in his mind and his soul. Tired of having this Thing in his life, of the watching, of this terrible anxiety that never leaves him anymore. He never had a problem like this before this business, back then he was the last person people would imagine to have anxiety issues. Maybe they should just burn the damned thing down. Just burn it down and get rid of it and be done with it. Let this whole thing rest, and then, maybe, Malone could rest too. Her suggestion had startled him; he hadn't expected her to suggest something so drastic when she called him here today. To be perfectly honest, he hadn't had the foggiest idea this morning why she might have wanted to bring this up again, except the vague guess that she'd maybe heard his broadcast about it and hadn't been pleased, though he'd left any personal or identifying details about her out of his telling of it. But the more he rolled it around in his mind, the less crazy an idea it seemed. It was worth a try. Let the Damned Thing burn.

"We could do it, though. And we probably should. Maybe I should, since I'm the one who started it. ...But there's one other possible issue, one other thing that could go wrong with this." he gestured to a print-out of his email exchange with Barret Ruger. In it, Barret, after making degrading comments about his show and Malone in general, proceeds to tell him that he's absolutely lost patience with Malone's 'lousy, baseless, and practically nonsensical reporting', as he calls it, and that a story of this magnitude, with implications this wide, needed to be investigated by a professional like Ruger and not a rank amateur like Malone. Malone pleads with him not to go, over the course of an exchange of several messages, but it seems to strengthen Barret's resolve. After butting heads, Ruger stops replying to Malone's emails.

"As you can see from the dates on this email," Malone told Taylor, "I last heard from him a couple days before you contacted me to arrange to meet here. It's safe to assume he already left and is headed for the old site. If he's not there now, he will be soon, and will certainly arrive before we do. If we suddenly show up and the place goes from deserted to Grand Central Station, he's going to have even questions about the place that won't be good for anyone. He's going to be snooping around, disturbing things that ought not be disturbed. And more than that, I don't want anything to happen to him. It may be hard to tell from these emails, but the man is a genius, a degenerate, but a genius, and a professional, and the community would wither without him. I didn't mean to get him involved. The man obviously hates me, and typically ignores me, how was I to know this would be the one time he'd listen? He's a degenerate who loathes me, but the investigation community needs him and I can't be responsible for this too."

Malone sighed and looked over her shoulder out the window distantly, mulling over his final answer one last time.

"But...if we can get around him somehow....I think it's worth a try. It's not going to be easy, but yeah. Yeah, let's wipe this thing off the damn map."

Re: Back to the old house

Good idea, I did the other night, hopefully she'll be online soon.

Re: Back to the old house

Now I wonder where gamergirl is lol

Re: Back to the old house

I agree that's probably the best way to progress the story right now. I hope Sky's still watching, heheh.

Re: Back to the old house

Ok, guys, I am about to finish my outcome of Taylor's scene. It kinda looks like Malone want to go with Taylor's plan which kinda bring a good outcome to fit her plans. But, if you suggest something else go ahead and suggest something if a bad outcome will be more interesting. Than I will post the outcome! :)

Re: Back to the old house

Yes, think the site was a little bugged for a few days, but it is good now. The scene is actually between Taylor and Malone, but everyone else gonna watch so they decide the outcome. :) next scene it will be the father and the daughter

Re: Back to the old house

So, what's going on with the site? Whenever I try to get on it freaks out! Anyways, anything anybody would want y character to participate in?

Re: Back to the old house

Ok, I posted and waiting for Malone to come to the scene....

Re: Back to the old house

...and following the site issues the past few days, Malone is ready to go! :D

Re: Back to the old house

Neat, I think I get it.

So, I'll go write up a character page really quick for the podcaster guy. In the mean time, since you mentioned needing a name for the podcaster to get the first post started, I was thinking Raymond Malone was a good-sounding name for him.

Re: Back to the old house

Yes, I want to start now. I will NPC the rest of the characters. Abbi, if you want to take the podcaster and I take the father, it will be so helpful, ty.

I will tell you how we start now:
This game sorta play in two acts. Now in act 1, each character create a scene which his character is in the spotlight, in the center. The character can involve other characters, locations and items, etc. Basically, the scene will not describe in full details cause this will happen during RP. So, I will do a scene first of my character Taylor(the builder). Show you an example.
Also, if it will be your turn to make a scene and you don't have an idea, you can let us describe a scene for you.
During the scene only the character in the spotlight and other characters that he wants to involve RP. However, the rest need to watch and they will determine the outcome of the ending of the scene, if it is bad or good. Bad not in the meaning of killing or chaos, but it might be bad for the character or he/she not getting the goal. Good is getting the goal/purpose or it will be good later. It will be important for later in the story. We will see what is more interesting to be, bad outcome or good outcome. The whole purpose is to make a good story! so, don't be mean and choose always bad (unless it will make it really interesting)
But, if someone choose us to make a scene for him, the character/player can choose his outcome for himself. He just won't choose the path to the outcome.

If you have more questions, PM me. I tried to explain it very briefly and not boring. So, if you still don't understand ask me.

Ok, now I will tell my scene of my character: It will be as Taylor called the podcaster(and abbi if you choose to be it, make a character or just invent a name for him) as she wants to meet him to discuss something about the house, she is worried.

I will post soon after I hear what Abbi decide.

Re: Back to the old house

So, are we gonna go forth with who we have soon like you were thinking of? If we didn't fill enough spots and you don't want to NPC half the cast, I could pick up another character, maybe the podcaster? I hope this RP does well, it looks like a good one, I love the premise, I love the characters involved. Can't wait.

Re: Back to the old house

Ok, Abbi, I liked your character and also no one else has asked so he is approved. Good job Sky and Abbi, I will give another week for the other characters to fill. If not, I will NPC them.

Hope this RP will succeed, it been on my mind to do this quite a while.

Re: Back to the old house

Very good! was not expecting that, in a good way! :) she's approved!

Re: Back to the old house

Just because I love Rocky horror picture show! hehe. reserved for you Sky. :)

Re: Back to the old house

May I reserve Character 3?

Does Rocky Horror count as a horror movie? Fiasco

Re: Back to the old house

Yes, it is reserved for you Abbi. :)

now I have to watch that horror movie! lol!

Re: Back to the old house

Could I maybe reserve character 4?

Home Movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1267319/?ref_=nv_sr_3), fiasco
