Damn, how can Bitch just stand there and let this shitty pervert use her like this? the redhead almost felt more disgusted at Margaret than Payne. Oh, wait, it's Margaret Hobbs. Never mind. Although it was impossible for Esmeralda to like either of the Paynes, she was certainly hating Elias a lot more right now.
Esmeralda noticed Doug's breathing becoming more labored. Control, Doug, the redhead muttered so that only Douglas could hear.
"True, but fast and furious gets a better response, especially with that one." Douglas' eyes drifted towards Hobbs. "I would know." The redhead raised an eyebrow, but chose not to say anything.
Esmeralda was getting damn bored of dancing and listening in on Elias and Doug's bantering. Luckily, her brother thought the same. As he gave the redhead a polite bow and took her hand, Esmeralda mentally sighed in relief. Finally.
"When will this thing be over? I need more alcohol." He glanced at his sister, who muttered a "hell yes" in response. "Glad to have a trooper here. How are those shoes not killing you?"
"They are," Esmeralda put it simply. "Be glad you're a man, Dougie."
The two headed over to a table. Doug nodded to Sebastian and Fred before heading to the bar. Esmeralda fought to keep her composed demeanor up. Screw these events.
Sebastian sat frozen in his seat as rage consumed him. He had never felt so insulted, so degraded, in his entire life.
Sebastian had simply wanted to discuss business cards with someone he thought would be able to appreciate them. Sure, he had been bragging and he wanted Fredrick to be jealous, but he hadn't expected to be treated like a child. He thought that Fredrick would simply retaliate by pulling out his card and then they would have a civilized conversation over the importance of business cards. So much for that line of thinking.
Sebastian briefly noticed that Milla had joined them at the table. She talked to Fredrick for a moment before addressing him. "Mr. Payne." she said.
Sebastian was only able to nod in reply as he was slowly losing control. His mind was filled with murderous thoughts and he gritted his teeth in an attempt to stay calm. It wasn't working however, and when Sebastian's hands began shaking uncontrollably he abruptly stood from his chair and headed towards the restroom. He felt drunk as he pushed his way through the throng of people. By the time he reached the bathroom door, his vison was blurring and he felt as if he might explode. He stumbled through the door, almost losing his balance.
Sebastian saw two men inside and he walked toward them menacingly. "Get the fuck out." They didn't move."NOW!" spit flew from his mouth as he yelled.
The men scurried out of the bathroom and left Sebastian alone. Sebastian walked to the sink and leaned his head down with his arms braced on either side. His shoulders moved up and down slightly as a result of his heavy breathing. He slowly looked up and glanced at himself in the mirror.
His eyes looked crazed and that just made Sebastian angrier. He raised his left hand and punched the mirror with all his strength. It shattered and he moved on to the next one, and the next one, and the one after that, until he sat on the floor in a pile of his own blood; shattered glass all around him.
Sebastian sat for a few minutes doing nothing until his breathing slowed down and he was back to a moderately calm state. He looked down at his left hand. Shit, he thought. He was going to need stitches. He pulled out his phone with his good hand and called Jerry, the leader of Sebastian and Elias's hired men.
He picked up on the second ring. "What's up boss?"
Sebastian got up and walked to the sink, "I had a bit of a meltdown in the bathroom and I scared off two men. I need you to find them on the security footage and make sure that you pay them to keep quiet. Got it."
Jerry, not surprised at Sebastian's abruptness already started looking through the footage. "Yes, sir."
Sebastian turned the water on and began scrubbing the blood off of his hand. "I also need you to send someone to clean up the mess in the bathroom, there's blood and glass everywhere and I can't have guests walking in on this."
Jerry assured his boss that he would and Sebastian ended the call.
He dried his hand, wrapped it up with paper towels and put his leather gloves on overtop of it. He knew that the Steeley siblings would notice the gloves and be suspicious of them, but if they were smart they wouldn't say anything.
Aside from the aching in his hand, Sebastian felt much better and even more so knowing that he now had a plan.
He opened the bathroom door and his eyes began scanning the room for red hair. He spotted her sitting at a table with Douglas, away from Fredrick thankfully. Sebastian ran his ran through his hair and walked up to the table. He leaned down and pulled out a pen and paper so he could write down his number.
He finished and handed the paper to Esmeralda. "I have a proposition for you, I would like for you and your siblings to accompany my brother and I to an auction in Spain at the end of the week." In a lower voice he said, "An underground auction. I don't know if you go to these kinds of things normally, but I would like to work with your company and I felt like this would be a good start." He pointed at the paper he had handed her. "That's my number, call me if you and your brothers are interested. make sure you call though because I will hang up if either Fredrick or Douglas makes the call." He adjusted his suit, fighting through the pain in his left hand. "I must say my goodbye now as I am leaving early to attend to an important matter. My brother will be staying as host for the remainder of the night. It was a pleasure meeting you."
Sebastian quickly took off, eager to leave. As Sebastian walked out the door he muttered quietly, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

――――――☆――――――
The only Steeley sister had to admit, she was slightly surprised at the sight of Sebastian Payne coming out of the same bathroom. Esmeralda's eyes landed on Fredrick, who was currently sitting alone. Obviously.
The redhead spotted Sebastian head towards her table and turned to his direction just as he arrived. As he leaned down, pulling out a pen and paper, Esmeralda noticed the leather gloves he was now wearing. She raised an eyebrow silently, not saying anything. Just because she chose not to blabber didn't mean she didn't see.
Payne finished writing on the paper and handed it to the respective redhead. "I have a proposition for you," he started speaking. Esmeralda listened intently, although her facial expression did not reveal any of her thoughts. "I would like for you and your siblings to accompany my brother and I to an auction in Spain at the end of the week." Now Esmeralda was for sure listening. In a lower voice, Payne added, "An underground auction. I don't know if you go to these kinds of things normally, but I would like to work with your company and I felt like this would be a good start." He pointed at the paper he had handed her. "That's my number, call me if you and your brothers are interested. make sure you call though because I will hang up if either Fredrick or Douglas makes the call." Sebastian straightened up, adjusting his suit. "I must say my goodbye now as I am leaving early to attend to an important matter. My brother will be staying as host for the remainder of the night. It was a pleasure meeting you."
"The pleasure is mine," Esmeralda responded automatically. Sebastian seemed eager to take off as Esmeralda slowly unfolded the paper. "He wants to work with us?" she muttered to herself, amused. "This just got interesting."
Esmeralda stood up, walking over to where Fred was currently sitting. "You up for more of these Paynes?"
Hex ~ #2d3a78
Fredrick knew his comment was uncalled for and a bit childish. He would've never said something like that to a superior. He didn't think of Sebastian as one, but it was still uncalled for. He wasn't planning on apologizing though. Fredrick learned his lesson in this business: If someone makes you feel like shit, smile through it. There will be time for revenge later. The way Sebastian's hand shook as he left for the bathroom, not bothering to acknowledge Fredrick before leaving. He could recognize the signs of losing control. He saw his father and occasionally Douglas lose control more than once. The best thing to do was to leave the man alone. He'll eventually put on his 'big boy' pants and be a proper businessman. Fredrick was aware his family was more on the gangster side of business than typical business owners. His statements to Sebastian were his way of letting the little gangster part of himself out. He tried to be more businessman, but his aggressive nature was hard to control sometimes. He watched the man leave for the bathroom and Fredrick realized he was left alone with entertainer. O Joy... Douglas is better with women than Fredrick. Fredrick tended to find that most women use their sexuality to get their way, something that didn't affect him. Women would become annoyed when the oldest son didn't appreciate or acknowledge their advances. Douglas was the flirt, not him. The smile she gave Fredrick would've been considered dazzling if only it had an effect on him.
"How long have you been working for the Paynes?"
Fredrick kept conversation friendly before she was called back to the stage. She smiled at him before returning to her piano. She seemed like charming woman. Fredrick did sense she was more than just a pretty face. He sat at the table, alone, listening to the music resonating through the room. A flash of black caught his attention. Sebastian was exiting the bathroom, gloves on his hands. Fredrick knew better than to inquire about Payne's newest accessory. However, he wasn't going to let a detail like that be forgettable. The oldest Payne approached his little sister, talking about something. He couldn't pick up what was being heard, but could tell it was something private. Fredrick noticed the man was fond of his sister more so than him or Douglas. He would've blamed it on her being a female, but Sebastian didn't think with his nether region. He handed Esmeralda a card before making his way towards the exit. Payne must've had enough for tonight. When Esmeralda approached him, he knew something was afoot.
"You up for more of these Paynes?"
Fredrick took the paper in her hand, examining it thoroughly. A phone number.
"Is this for business?"
He knew his sister wouldn't mix the line between business and pleasure, but he had to ask. As his sister responded, he noticed an idiot behind Emmy stumbling through the dining room, obviously drunk. Fuck. The idiot was his.
"That fucking idiot. I'm going to kill him.
"True, but fast and furious gets a better response, especially with that one. I would know." Elias was thrown by Douglas's sudden mood change, but didn't show it.
Did Elias take things too far by flirting with the youngest Steeley sibling? Maybe so. It is possible that Douglas may have thought that he was being used, which in a way, he was. Elias was curious to see if it was possible for him to be sexually attracted to a man, but in the back of his mind he also knew that if he could win Douglas's affections then he would have a major advantage against Steeley Inc.
As Douglas walked away from the dance floor with his sister, Elias actually felt a hint of remorse for trying to manipulate him. He stared at Douglas as he went to the bar, most likely to get drunk. At the sound of the bimbo's laugh in his ear, Elias finally tore his eyes away from the youngest Steeley sibling and shook his head at himself. Feeling remorse is not something Elias typically does and now was not the time to start doing so.
Elias would always put his business first. Sebastian and him had worked their asses off for their company, clawing their way out of the dirt to rise to the top, and Elias would be damned if he let his emotions get in the way of his success.
Charming facade back in place, Elias led the bimbo back to her table and listened to her ramble on so he wouldn't seem rude. He searched for his brother as she talked, but Sebastian was no where to be found. He asked the bimbo, Margaret was her name, for her number and assured her that he would give her a call. Not happening, he thought. He stood from the table and pulled out his cell phone, calling Sebastian. No answer. Shit. Something must be wrong.
He called Jerry next, he answered right away. "What is it sir?"
"Where's Sebastian? He's not answering his phone."
"He left the restaurant sir, he had another um... anger attack or whatever you call them. He's fine though, just needed some stitches in his hands.
Elias breathed a sigh of relief knowing that Sebastian was okay. Elias didn't like to show it, but he cared deeply for his brother. "Alright. Thanks for letting me know Jerry. I'll be in touch." He ended the phone call.
Elias put on a charming smile as he walked toward the Steeley siblings. It's time to play the part of the gracious host once more.
Douglas was done with this shitty event especially the shittier hosts. He could feel himself getting pissed off. Fredrick would kill him if he started a brawl, but he needed some sort of distraction. Alcohol is his current companion after chugging down his fifth shot of... something. The burn in his throat felt nice. The slight pain was worth the ten seconds of pleasure. The bartender made sure to keep his glass filled. He was a very smart man, ignoring Douglas would've caused more harm. Douglas was losing his inhibitions and could feel his nerves relaxing. Alcohol helped ease his anger, but he needed something more. Anything. Douglas paid closer attention to his bartender: a few years older than himself, slightly above average looking, and worked well with his hands. The alcohol clouded his judgement as he got a naughty idea. He called the bartender over, whispering to him.
"I will give you 200 hundred dollars if you get me off in the bathroom right now. I don't care how you do it just get it done. He could see the shock in the bartender's eyes. "Are you really thinking about rejecting? That's more then you'll make tonight in tips alone. It's easy money. Meet me in the bathroom in five minutes, don't draw attention to yourself and don't keep me waiting."
Douglas finished his final shot before making his way towards the restroom. Was this bad idea? Hell yeah. Was it going to fun? Better be if he's paying two hundred for it. He makes his way to bathroom, stopping in his tracks when he saw a wall of broken mirrors covered in blood. He would've been concerned for his safety if he wasn't drunk. He was more concerned about how it would ruin the mood, or lack thereof. When the door opened, the bartender's face went white. The horror on the man's face was evident, but Douglas remained unaffected, focused on his mission.
"Better get to it then."
The man did.
~
The whole thing ended quickly. The two men were finished before a cleaning crew came in, hanging an out of order sign. Douglas chuckled to himself, still drunk and very relaxed. The event may have been shit earlier, but damn he was having fun now. He could feel himself getting looser, stumbling over his feet. He was enjoying himself. The joy was short lived when he noticed Fredrick's murderous eyes. Fuck.

"Deal with the Payne."
Fredric didn't say anything else to his sister before he went to his stumbling, little brother. He grabbed him by the collar, pulling him to the hallway which lead to the bathrooms. The hallway had a blind section towards the end, free from prying eyes. Fredrick shoved Douglas against the wall, his hands gripping his suit collar.
"What the fuck do you think you are doing? I specifically said no drunkenness tonight!"
Douglas's eyed his brother, a smug and drunk smile on his face. He began to laugh. Fredrick couldn't believe the audacity of his brother! Laughing at Fredrick when he was ruining everything. He reigned his temper in, though. Screaming at Douglas would only ruin things further. However, he couldn't allow disobedience within his family. He would look weak. He released his brother, fixing his suit. Douglas had the nerve to look victorious. Fredrick smiled as he bitch slapped his baby brother. The sound of hand hitting flesh echoed throughout the room. Douglas held his jaw, sobering up quickly. The surprise in his eyes, only angered Fredrick more.
"I will not tolerate incompetence, not from my employees and I shouldn't have to expect it from you. Sober up and fix your fucking face."
Douglas's face was indeed red. The friction from the slap made a red mark on his. Luckily, it didn't look like a handprint. Fredrick fixed his suit jacket as he glared at Douglas.
"Consider yourself lucky. Your jaw is still intact."
He placed a smile on his face as he left his brother. Fredrick wouldn't be a rude guest.

"Have some faith in me," she mused, aware of the fact that Fred wasn't giving her his complete attention. "I think you know the answer to that." As she was answering, Esmeralda couldn't help but notice the way Fred seemed to be looking past her. He had that angry, frustrated, "shit!" look in his eyes. That could only mean one thing.
"That fucking idiot. I'm going to kill him." he muttered out through grit teeth. Something in Esmeralda's mind clicked, and she let out an exasperated sigh, not needing to turn around to know what her older brother was talking about.
"Doug's up to his crazy shenanigans again, isn't he?" she deadpanned, hiding her frustration more effectively than her elder brother. After seeing that furious look in Fred's eyes, Esmeralda knew the answer.
Fredrick plastered a smile on his face as he stood up. "Deal with the Payne." Fred muttered out four words before leaving the table to deal with Douglas.
Esmeralda smiled as well as the younger Payne approached the table, making sure that she was matching the charming demeanor of Elias. The pretense was infuriating to keep up with, but it was all part of business. "Mr. Payne," she greeted, her tone glib yet charming, acting as if she was enjoying the even. In reality, Esmeralda wanted to drop the damn act and get the hell of The Peacock Lounge.
Business is a bitch.
Elias noticed Fredrick leaving the table and going over to Douglas, he did not look happy. It seems that Fredrick saw Douglas as the weak link, Elias could use that.
Esmeralda greeted him as he approached the table. "Mr. Payne."
Elias had to give it to her, she had the charming act down pat. He was sure that she knew his charm was an act as well, but Elias felt that his charm came more naturally to him whereas hers was just another part of business. "Ms. Steeley," he greeted back. "I just wanted to make sure I that I would get to say goodbye before you leave."
He assessed her as he talked, trying to get a glimpse into her personality. However, it was proving to be a difficult endeavor as Esmeralda gave nothing away. No odd habits or quirks, no change in emotion or in her voice. Damn, he thought. She's good.
Knowing he wasn't going to get anything out of her he said, "I'm afraid I have to go talk to my other guests before they take off as my brother left me to host alone." He beamed at her and shook her hand once more. "If you don't mind, tell your brothers it was a pleasure meeting you all."
He left and made his rounds at all the tables. The more people that left, the more relaxed he became. Normally Elias enjoyed these kind of events, but he wanted nothing more than to go to his apartment and down a bottle of whiskey.
Douglas was too drunk to care as his brother dragged him away from the event. Was it irresponsible to get drunk at a public event? Absolutely. Did Douglas care? Hell no. Fredrick recognized him only as the mouthpiece of the family, nothing more. He didn't care if Douglas made the family a million dollar connection or had a brilliant idea; Fredrick would always see Douglas as the screw up, the failure. So he didn't have his sister's cutthroat personality or patented bitch face nor Fredrick's intelligence or intense aura. Douglas was charming and good in a fight. He owned these qualities, but every time his brother looked at him, he could see disappointment. Fredrick lead him into a hallway near the bathroom. Douglas grinned, remembering the events that occurred previously in said restroom. He was too deep in thought to take in the words his brother was saying.
"What the fuck do you think you are doing? I specifically said no drunkenness tonight!"
The alcohol pulsing through Douglas's system was working against him. He couldn't comprehend Freddie's anger or the intense atmosphere in the hallway. Douglas began to smile, his typical 'I'm awesome, fuck you' smile. Laughter began to tumble out of his throat. Douglas is fun drunk and laughter is his natural response. Was he laughing at Fredrick? Yes, but more at how odd the situation to Douglas. When Fredrick began to straightened up his despised suit, he did feel victorious. Fredrick was never one to have fun, maybe he loosened up. Douglas was wrong. The slap from his brother was unexpected. Fredrick has hit him on occasion, but never in public.
"I will not tolerate incompetence, not from my employees and I shouldn't have to expect it from you. Sober up and fix your fucking face."
His face stung as Douglas placed his hand on his cheek. The flesh was sensitive, but nothing a ice pack couldn't fix.
"Consider yourself lucky. Your jaw is still intact."
The two men glared at each other before Fredrick returned to their table. Douglas stayed behind, rubbing the other side of his face. If both cheeks were red, he could blame it on the alcohol. The hallway lacked a mirror so Douglas hoped for the best as he entered the ballroom. He held his head high, a pleasant grin on his face. He wanted nothing more than to leave this atrocious event. He approached his siblings table as the younger Payne left. Douglas paid him no glance as he smiled at Esmeralda, his new favorite siblings.
"Shall we leave? I've had enough fun for the evening.
Like a child, he begged Fredrick with his eyes, a playful pout on his face.

Esmeralda distinctly noticed the Payne assessing her, as if he was trying to sort her out. "Well, thank you," the redhead thanked the businessman as graciously as possible without making it seem fake or overbearing. "You - and your brother - have been wonderful hosts tonight." Although Esmeralda was sure that both of them knew that he had left, it would seem rude not to credit Sebastian.
"I'm afraid I have to go talk to my other guests before they take off as my brother left me to host alone," Elias said in almost an apologetic tone, beaming at the redhead. They shook hands once more. "If you don't mind, tell your brothers it was a pleasure meeting you all."
"The pleasure is ours, Mr. Payne," Esmeralda said automatically, smiling charmingly.
As soon as Elias left, Esmeralda relaxed a great amount. There was no change in her outward appearance, but inside, Esmeralda was begging the world to let her leave as soon as humanly possible. Esmeralda knew that these meetings were all part of business, and she had embraced that a long time ago. But that didn't mean Esmeralda had to like it. She appreciated the chance to see what her enemies could do, but these dinners were such a bore.
Esmeralda nearly did a double-take as Fredrick and Douglas entered the ballroom. The latter's face was quite literally redder than a tomato. Esmeralda could see an even redder mark on Douglas' cheek. The redhead definitely knew what happened.
"Fredrick, we don't do that at a public event," Esmeralda commented wearily. "Even if it happens in the washroom." Douglas simply smiled at the redhead.
"Shall we leave? I've had enough fun for the evening," Douglas turned to Fred, his eyes pleading.
"Please," Esmeralda muttered, just loud enough for her brothers to hear.

"Fredrick, we don't do that at a public event, even if it happens in the washroom."
Fredrick didn't blame his sister for scolding him. Attacking his brother at a public event is not good for their reputation. Fredrick's temper is usually reigned in well, but seeing his brother deliberately disobeying his orders tends to set him off. He can handle Douglas's alcoholic moments and the annual fights he gets in, but being disobedient is a major peeve for the oldest Steeley. The two siblings were staring at Fredrick, Douglas's eyes pleading. Fredrick raised an eyebrow at his baby brother. He will never understand how Douglas can change his moods so quickly.
"Shall we leave? I've had enough fun for the evening-" "Please,"
Fredrick was as desperate to leave as his siblings. The event was winding down, many of the other businessman and woman leaving. He saw Esmeralda acknowledge the younger Payne's farewell so it wouldn't be rude if the Steeley's left. The family can leave now without worrying about offending the Paynes. Well, Fredrick already did that earlier.
"Yes, let's go home."
The siblings returned to their previous formation as they left the Peacock Lounge, Esmeralda at the head. She deserved it tonight. She hadn't cracked all evening unlike the two brothers. Fredrick smiled to himself. She was the strongest. He's glad she's on their side. The Steeley's chauffeur pulled up in their limousine as the siblings exited the lounge. Fredrick rolled his eyes at the luxury car. Douglas insists on driving in and out with style so a limousine was naturally the perfect choice. The Steeley siblings entered the car and sat in silence. The Payne brothers have proved themselves to be worthy opponents. Now that the event is over and now a new challenge is on the horizon.
"Emmy, call the Payne tomorrow, tell them we've accepted.

Esmeralda smirked slightly. "I thought you'd never ask."
The next day, Esmeralda woke up at five in the morning, quietly making her tea in the kitchen. She was never one to sleep up to the "healthy" standards, but Esmeralda was one of the few who could pull an all-nighter three times a week and still feel completely refreshed.
Esmeralda had never been a fan of sweet tea. It always felt weird to her whenever her drink was remotely sweet, hot chocolate being an exception. It was the very reason why Esmeralda drank black tea instead. This morning, she was mixing Keemun tea - a rather bitter form of black tea - and Darjeeling, one of the most sought after black teas. Esmeralda wasn't a simple person.
Esmeralda sat at the counter, drinking her black tea mixture and scrolling through Netflix on her tablet as the sun rose in the already lit up city. She usually watched Grey's Anatomy - it was one of her favorite shows - but Esmeralda was definitely one to get bored eventually. Today, Esmeralda Steeley was not going to watch the same old show as she usually did.
She was going to watch My Little Pony.
Esmeralda hated children's shows, almost as much as she disliked children themselves. But the redhead had some time, since she wasn't going to call the Paynes until a bit later - half past five was a bit early, no? Besides, Esmeralda never actually watched a kids' show, even when she was a child.
Esmeralda grudgingly chose My Little Pony: Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks, putting on her earbuds as she sipped her still-hot tea. The redhead always had a talent of hearing people's dialogue even when she was honed in on music or a show. If something popped up, she would notice.
Before Esmeralda knew it, she was back to watching Grey's Anatomy. She couldn't blame herself. That My Little Pony thing practically made her flinch. She peered up at the clock - yup, time to call the Payne.
Esmeralda dialed the number Payne gave her, making sure to block her own phone number. There were only three people in the world who knew her private phone number - Doug, Fred, and herself. Esmeralda did not want to add any of the Paynes to the list.
"Mr. Payne?" Esmeralda said after he picked up the phone. "I'd like to talk about your proposal."
The morning after the charity dinner, Sebastian sat in his leather armchair doing paperwork. He had to use his right hand which made it difficult as he is left-handed, but there was no way an injury was going to keep him from working. Sebastian did this every morning at exactly 6 o'clock and before that he had exercised and taken a shower at precise times. Every part of his day was planned and he went through the activities like clockwork.
Some might think that Sebastian lived a sad life, but he preferred it this way. Where others yearned for change and spontaneity, Sebastian wanted control and security. Perhaps his behavior is due to his rough childhood where he had no assurances and lived in an unstable atmosphere. Whatever the reason, Sebastian only knew that he had no desire to change his 'boring' life. Recently however, Sebastian had felt as if something was missing in his life. What, he did not know as he had everything he ever wanted. Money, power, a sense of control, what more could he want?
Sebastian shook away his thoughts and moved to look out of the large picture windows that wrapped around the entirety of his living room. As his apartment was on the top floor, he had a perfect view of the city. He could see his casino, The Calypso, directly across the street. It wasn't very busy during this time of day, but there where still a few cars sitting in the parking lot. Sebastian preferred the city at night because all the lights from the buildings resembled stars. He liked to watch the stars and since it is impossible to see the actual stars in a big city like Las Vegas, the city lights were the closest he could get.
He walked back to his desk and gripped his left hand. It was still sore, but it would heal soon enough. The stitches that one of his medics had put in would be removed before the Spain trip, so if the Steeley siblings decided to come, they shouldn't notice it. There would be a scar, but Sebastian already had so many scars on his hands that it wouldn't stand out.
Sebastian wasn't fond of leaving Elias to host alone last night, but he didn't have a choice. His younger brother was pissed when he came back from the dinner, but he got over it pretty quick, especially when Sebastian offered him a bottle of whiskey. Elias wouldn't be up for about another hour or so and since they didn't need to go in to work until later today, Sebastian wouldn't wake him. Elias had an apartment directly below Sebastian's as they liked to stay near each other. Sometimes Elias would just stay in Sebastian's guest room, however, he normally only did that when he was drunk.
Just as Sebastian had finished his paperwork, his phone rang. He picked it up and checked the caller id. That's strange, he thought. The number is blocked. "Hello?" he said in a questioning voice.
"Mr. Payne?" Was that Ms. Steeley's voice?"I'd like to talk about your proposal."
It was her. "Ms. Steeley, what a pleasure to hear from you." he smiled as he talked. "I hope that you have decided to accept the proposal." Was it just him or was it starting to sound like he was asking for her hand in marriage.

Finally - which was after about two seconds in reality and 20 minutes in Esmeralda's fast-paced mind - the redhead had selected a small dark red notepad with gold-rimmed pages (much too fancy for her own home, but Esmeralda was exposed to many intricate things) and a sleek, gold pen which wrote in dark gray ink. Dark gray - not black nor navy. It was a rare occurrence.
Of course, the decision was much simpler in reality that what Esmeralda made it seem like in her mind. The entire process took less than three seconds. Esmeralda flipped open the notepad and started writing.
"Ms. Steeley, what a pleasure to hear from you," Esmeralda had finished the message and showed it to Douglas and Fredrick, who were currently present, just as the Payne started answering the phone. "I hope that you have decided to accept the proposal."
As Esmeralda responded, she started writing on the notepad in her ever-neat handwriting. "The pleasure is mine, Mr. Payne," she responded smoothly. There was absolutely no way Sebastian could tell that she was writing something down and answering him simultaneously. "My brothers and I have discussed, and we have decided to accept your proposition."
Meanwhile, though, Esmeralda had just finished writing her message and showed it to her siblings.
Sebastian spun around in his chair as Esmeralda spoke. "The pleasure is mine, Mr. Payne."
She spoke so smoothly, so efficiently, in a way that was strictly business, but still left you feeling good about yourself. She was a curiosity that Sebastian was beginning to fear wouldn't be satisfied.
As he stopped spinning and was facing his kitchen, he wondered what she was doing at the moment aside from talking to him.
"My brothers and I have discussed, and we have decided to accept your proposition."
Sebastian was not surprised by this, he had expected them to accept. In fact, he had already reserved them a spot in the hotel they would be staying at in Spain. It was arrogant of him, he knew, but they would have to be dumb to say no.
He resituated himself in the chair "Excellent. You will not be disappointed in your decision. I don't know if you've been there before, but Spain is a beautiful place. I'm sure you'll fit in quite well there, Ms. Steeley."
Sebastian knew that her brothers were most likely in the room with her, but it didn't matter much to Sebastian whether or not they were listening into their conversation. He just found her brothers to be unpleasant, especially Fredrick. Sebastian had thought that the two of them would get along reasonably well as they seem to have a lot in common, but that was not the case. Perhaps they were too alike and that caused them to butt heads. Maybe the trip would help Sebastian feel less anger towards the eldest Steeley sibling. If Sebastian's plan was going to work, he would at least have to have to pretend like he harbored no hard feelings toward Fredrick.
Sebastian wondered if Esmeralda would catch onto his subtle compliment. He'd bet money that she did, she was a sharp one.
Hex ~ #2d3a78
The previous evening would've gladly been forgotten by Fredrick if the business call between Sebastian and Esmeralda wasn't today. His mornings usually consist of business plans for expansions or new additions to any of the Steeley's property. The oldest Steeley was contemplating an expansion of their hotel, The Steeley Inn, or possibly their restaurant, The Night Owl. Both business have been successful lately and playing on their popularity could bring extra funds, not like the Steeley's needed it though. The thought of another thousand in his bank account didn't appeal to Fredrick. The thrill of being able to claim the thousand was more satisfying to the businessman. The feeling of accomplishment as sales keep rising and rising could make the uptight brother sleep like baby. The business plans laid sprawled on his office desk, but before he could make a call, Douglas entered. The two hadn't spoken since yesterday and the tension was clear. Douglas was smiling as usual, but his eyes weren't looking at Fredrick, past him behind him. Fredrick knew Douglas had a right to be angry. If their positions had been reversed, he would've, well, personally Fredrick would have left the event, not allowing himself to tarnish the family name.
"For what it's worth, I do apologize for doing that at the event, not for the hit though. The limousine or at home would've been a better location. You are spokesman of the family and you will not allow that title to inflate your, already huge, ego.
Douglas didn't say anything, not a glance at his older brother. Fredrick supposed he deserved it. The two men can both be asses and were likely to hold onto this useless feud. Truthfully, Fredrick didn't like having tension with Douglas. He can remember tutoring Douglas in school and guarding him when Douglas's mouth got him in trouble. He missed those days, but the deaths of their parents broken whatever bond they had. The brothers coped in different ways, just not together. Now, the business was everything. Fredrick sighed. They will move past this eventually. Douglas gestured for him to follow him. He found his sister on the phone, obviously with the Payne brother. She was writing on a small dark red notepad with gold-rimmed pages with a sleek, gold pen. Esmeralda wasn't one for embellishments, but Fredrick insists on the finer things. Appearances are everything.
I will write down what he says. I don't trust you enough to turn the phone on speaker.
Fredrick knew the comment was directed at Douglas. He didn't turn to look at him, but knew their little brother was grinning. The next message made Fredrick drop his stony expression.
It sounded like he was asking my hand in marriage.
What the hell kind of business arrangement is this?

Okay, that wasn't exactly true. Esmeralda was sure that Sebastian wasn't proposing to her, but the way he worded his statement almost made it sound like he was. But Fredrick looked like he needed some reassurances.
"Excellent," the redhead listened in as Sebastian responded. She immediately stopped twirling the gold pen that was currently in her grasp. "You will not be disappointed in your decision. I don't know if you've been there before, but Spain is a beautiful place. I'm sure you'll fit in quite well there, Ms. Steeley."
Esmeralda raised a brow, catching on to the implication - however strange it was - and started writing in the notepad as she started to speak. "Thank you, Mr. Payne," she responded as she finished up her message. "My brothers and I have been to Spain before. The country never fails to impress." As Esmeralda uttered the last two sentences, she nudged the dark red notepad in her brothers' direction, giving them limited time to read.
Strange, no?
Esmeralda grabbed the notepad back barely a second after she had finished speaking, and started talking once again. "May I ask, Mr. Payne, if you and your brother are to book me and my brothers a couple hotel rooms?" the redhead inquired. "I wouldn't want to sound rude, but in the past, some hosts expected us to reserve our own rooms, while others didn't. We like to be prepared." It was true. In the past, a pair of twins - business owners, of course - acted rather unprofessional, and expected the three Steeley siblings to book their own hotel rooms, etc. In fact, they were surprisingly horrendous businessmen. They inherited their company from their successful parents, but didn't know how to do anything at all. Predictably, their business turned to dust extremely quickly.
I will write down what he says. I don't trust you enough to turn the phone on speaker.
Douglas smiled, the Cheshire cat would've been envious of his grin.
"Who? Me?"
He knew Emmy was talking about him. She was probably right in her call to not to be on speaker though. Fredrick wasn't listening to what his sister was talking about. He had more important things on his mind, like his clothing line. Fredrick did most of the business side of it, but Douglas was managing the designers and models. One of models was being especially friendly. He was planning to call her up today, but this phone call was more 'valuable'. As his sister began to write, he burst out in hysterical laughter. Fredrick would be angry if Payne overhead, but the words were hilarious.
It sounded like he was asking my hand in marriage.
"I knew it! I can't believe it. If this business arrangement was a ploy to get you in bed, I like this man even better. It's a little more desperate than I would've liked, but points for going all out." The look his siblings quieted his laughter."What? I can't be the only Steeley sibling to get laid in Spain. Who would've guessed? A Payne and a Steeley tying the knot. I get to be the bridegroom!"
He knew his sister was probably joking, one of her rare funny moments. The look of pure shock on Fredrick's face was worth the mild heart attack he might've experienced. Douglas's theory was confirmed when she wrote down that it was a joke. The whole marriage thing wasn't serious, but Douglas knew yearning when he saw it. Sebastian's eyes followed his sister throughout the entire event. The older Payne was smitten with his sister. Douglas chuckled. How someone found his cold sister attractive he'll never understand, not that she isn't gorgeous. Esmeralda is a beauty, but thinking about her like that was something he didn't enjoy picturing.
There was a compliment implied in the Payne's rambling. Strange, no?
Douglas rolled his eyes, exaggerating the movement. He literally went on about how Payne was interested in her, not only today, but yesterday as well. He gave her a look that screamed, 'Are you fucking serious right now? You haven't noticed yet.' When his sister mentioned the twins, Douglas's joking manner was lost. He remembered the twins. Truthfully, the bedroom situation was their fault in Fredrick's and Esmeralda's case, not Douglas's. You see, he have been having a relationship with both of the twins, at the same time. He was going to stay with one of them, not sure who though. Neither one was very good at business especially since they couldn't figure out they were having sex with the same person. Finding out the male twin was only using him made his demise even sweeter. The betrayal hurt though as Douglas did care about the twin for a time, but love was something people like him will never have. Douglas cleared his throat, ignoring his past. The future lies in Spain.
"Thank you, Mr. Payne, my brothers and I have been to Spain before. The country never fails to impress." It didn't surprise Sebastian that they had been there before, business does call for lots of traveling after all.
"May I ask, Mr. Payne, if you and your brother are to book me and my brothers a couple hotel rooms?" Esmeralda asked."I wouldn't want to sound rude, but in the past, some hosts expected us to reserve our own rooms, while others didn't. We like to be prepared."
Sebastian internally scoffed at that. He had already reserved a spot for them late last night and it baffled him that she would even have to ask. However, Sebastian understood where she was coming from. Sadly, there were many idiot CEO's in the world that didn't understand what common courtesy was.
"Don't worry Ms. Steeley, my brother and I will be sure to book all three of you a room at the hotel." Of course, he had already done that, but she didn't have to know. "As for transportation, I would love for the three of you to join us in our private jet." Sebastian hated flying with loud and annoying people, so a private jet was necessary. "I would also like to inform you that will cover any further expenses during the trip. The only cost you will be responsible for is what you purchase at the auction."
Sebastian walked to his kitchen to grab a glass of milk, knowing that the call would be over soon. "While we are discussing plans, I might as well inform you on how the trip will play out." He paused and took a sip from his glass. "We will be leaving on this coming Friday at 7pm, and we will arrive in Spain at approximately 8 'o clock in the morning. We will be staying for a total of three days. The first and third day you are free to do what you want, but the auction is on day two so you will have to have enough free time to attend that day."
He finished off his glass and sat it in the dishwater. "Before we end the call Ms. Steeley, do you have any further comments or concerns regarding the trip?"

After all, he was a Steeley.
"Don't worry Ms. Steeley," Sebastian continued. Although he clearly wasn't bouncing with cheerfulness, Esmeralda noted that the businessman was far from stiff. "My brother and I will be sure to book all three of you a room at the hotel." If Esmeralda were him, then she'd have already done that. It felt like something the elder Payne would do. In fact, to be perfectly honest, the redhead wouldn't be surprised if he had already booked hotel rooms for the three siblings. "As for transportation, I would love for the three of you to join us in our private jet." Esmeralda raised a brow curiously, and started scrawling a note down on the dark red notepad.
Esmeralda felt that it was rather necessary for her to mention that. It wasn't exactly a minor detail. Sebastian continued speaking as Esmeralda pushed the notepad in her brothers' direction. "I would also like to inform you that we will cover any further expenses during the trip. The only cost you will be responsible for is what you purchase at the auction." Esmeralda made sure to mention this as well.
"Thank you, Mr. Payne," she said. "You're too kind."
Esmeralda reached for her black tea, sipping silently. There was absolutely no way Sebastian could hear her drinking. "While we are discussing plans, I might as well inform you on how the trip will play out." Sebastian paused for a moment, before continuing. "We will be leaving on this coming Friday at 7pm, and we will arrive in Spain at approximately 8 'o clock in the morning. We will be staying for a total of three days. The first and third day you are free to do what you want, but the auction is on day two so you will have to have enough free time to attend that day."
Esmeralda wasn't going to write down the exact plans as Sebastian spoke - she could inform her brothers of that later. Sebastian continued.
"Before we end the call Ms. Steeley," Sebastian began. "Do you have any further comments or concerns regarding the trip?"
Esmeralda answered about a half second later. "No, but I appreciate you asking. Thank you for your time today; I'll be sure to contact you if I have any concerns. I look forward to this coming Friday. Goodbye, Mr. Payne."
Esmeralda always felt like ending phone calls was one of her main business weaknesses. But never mind that. The redhead ended the call and set the phone down and turned to face her brothers. "We'll be leaving on Friday," she briefed Doug and Fred on the business plans. "7 PM. We'll be in Spain at about 8 in the morning, and we'll stay there for three days. We can do whatever we want, but the auction in on the second day."
Esmeralda clasped her hands together. "Prepare for the Payne of Spain."
"No, but I appreciate you asking. Thank you for your time today; I'll be sure to contact you if I have any concerns. I look forward to this coming Friday. Goodbye, Mr. Payne."
Sebastian said his goodbye before hanging up his phone. God is he tired of kissing ass. Anymore, that seems like the only thing his job is about. Just for once, Sebastian would like to sit in comfortable silence with someone, without feeling the need to participate in tasteless banter.
He checked his watch and dialed Elias's number after seeing that it was time for his baby brother to get up.
Elias picked up after several rings and growled into the phone. "I'm awake, okay. Jesus!"The phone crackled as Elias moved around, probably putting his clothes on. "Why do you always have to be so punctual Seb? It's fucking annoying."
Ignoring his brother's comments completely Sebastian said, "The Steeley's have agreed to come to Spain with us. They will meet us on Friday at our jet."His finger moved to hit the off button, when he decided to add something else. "And don't forget to be at the office in twenty minutes. We will discuss details there." He hung up the phone before his brother could respond.
Sebastian pursed his lips as he looked at the business magazine he had picked up this morning. In big fat bold letters it read, "Steeley Inc. comes out on top again!"
The business income scores from the past six months have been released and Steeley Inc. is still in first. Right underneath them in second place was Payne Industries with a considerably lower income score. It made Sebastian's blood boil. Something must be done about this, he thought.
His thoughts were interrupted by his brother's entrance onto the jet. Sebastian adjusted his reading glasses as Elias stormed over to take a look at the magazine. At the sight of the scores, his brother muttered a series of curses.
"That's bullshit! I can't believe we're that far behind, we've been working our asses off!"
Sebastian cleared his throat and spoke up, "Apparently, our asses haven't been working hard enough." He tilted his head down and looked up at his brother through his glasses. "We'll have to tell Jerry to double our shipments."
Elias looked at Sebastian incredulously. "Double our shipments. Are you crazy?! That many illegal products going in and out is risky, too risky." Sebastian watched his brother ponder for a moment, it wasn't long however, before he saw the power hungry shark come out.
With fierce determination in his voice, Elias said, "Do it. It's crazy, but it could bring us to the top, where we belong."
Seemingly satisfied, Elias took a seat on the couch where Sebastian was sitting. Sebastian watched as Elias pulled out a cigarette and lit it. Sebastian could barely keep himself from groaning in annoyance. He knew that the Steeley siblings wouldn't appreciate a smoke filled jet as they seemed to dislike Elias's smoking at the dinner last week.
This morning, Sebastian had texted Esmeralda the address to where their jet was held at and he knew that they could arrive at any moment. He just hoped that the lavish jet would distract them from the smoke. The seats of the couch were made out of an expensive black leather with another matching couch sitting directly across from this one. White marble tables were set up around the jet and a bar sat nestled in the corner. The wine selection was much nicer than the one from the dinner since this was a private setup and Sebastian hoped the siblings would appreciate it.
He pulled out his beloved day planner as he waited for their arrival and skimmed through the dates and times, it always helped him relax.

Instead of sporting a satisfied expression, Esmeralda bit the inside of her lip, showing no signs of success. Sure, she definitely didn't want the Paynes to beat the Steeleys in any way, but in the world of business, winning the battle does not mean winning the war. Sebastian and Elias would most likely increase their business production, given their newfound...motivation.
"Fredrick," the redhead spoke for the first time that morning, narrowing her eyes. She folded her business magazine and set it down. "The Paynes have a considerably lower income score than us. Taking this detail into mind, they'd probably feel more motivated than ever to increase their business production." Esmeralda tapped her nail on her armrest. "We need to defend our place. Make sure that the damned Paynes don't even get close to touching us."
The redhead stood up. "We'll be leaving soon," she called to her brothers as she headed towards her room. She had given the Paynes her number after she ended her phone call with Sebastian. Of course, Esmeralda didn't give him her personal number. The redhead had a tendency to...pickpocket, per say, but only under very specific conditions. Around a week or so before the phone call, Esmeralda had made sure to get her hands on a phone. With the help of Doug, of course. She was practically paranoid about her privacy, and went to extreme lengths to keep her private number private. Therefore, when Sebastian asked for her number so he could text her directions later, Esmeralda was prepared. She gave him the number of the phone she and Douglas pickpocketed. Private number stays private, after all.
Esmeralda quickly applied a nude lipstick, along with some dark eyeshadow along her lashline. After doing so, the redhead put away her makeup, humming very quietly as she did so. Esmeralda wasn't particularly eager about being locked up with the Paynes in their private jet, but you had to sacrifice some things to stay at the top.

Re: Bad Business
Would you like to do the phone call? Douglas will try to make faces at her if it happens!
Re: Bad Business
I do want to know if you guys care if I go ahead and skip to Spain after the Steeley siblings leave The Peacock Lounge. If I do, then I'll write 'a week later' at the top and play it like Esmeralda already agreed to go. If you want to do something before that or play out the phone call though, I'll do that.
Re: Bad Business
@Korruption "Business is a bitch." That was great! xD
Re: Bad Business
If you are both down for that, I'll gladly play along. You two can also decide which sibling you think needs to get kidnapped.
Re: Bad Business
By the way, do either of you have any interesting ideas for the future?
