Xavier

Summer, probably Xavier’s least favorite season other than the fact it got him out of school. It was too hot, too much heat. But that didn’t stop him. His outfit was a plaid shirt over a simple t-shirt and black jeans, his hair was a mess, a beanie hiding it. Today they needed to practice. He cracked his knuckles as he waited for his friends to get over to the studio.

A knot sat in his stomach as he thought about Battle of the Bands and how Grace would be competing against him. He hadn’t meant to cheat, he’d been drunk! It didn’t matter how many times he had apologized to Grace, she was over him. At least, that is what she had said. He didn’t believe her, but he would make her believe he was sorry for what he did. He just wanted his girlfriend back.

He sighed, standing up and grabbing a drink from the fridge that sat in the studio. He looked at the Pepsi in his hands, frowning. They better get here soon.

God, why am I such an idiot? He asked himself, rubbing his jaw. It pissed him off that him and Grace would have been performing together, and if they won they would be in a famous band together. But he had to be stupid that night, that one night changed everything.

Every. Fucking. Thing.

Archer stuffed a popsicle down his throat in an attempt to fight off the heat as well as quench his thirst. Beside him sat his 11 year old sister, Samantha, who he affectionately called "Sammy". She looked up at him and made an odd face. "What?" he asked, taking the popsicle out of his mouth.

"It looked like you were deep-throating that thing," she said with a laugh as Archer's eyebrows raised in shock.

"What do you know about deep-throating?!" Before Sam could answer, Archer's phone went off and he looked at the message. It was from Xavier. "We'll discuss this later," he said, getting into his white pickup truck and heading to Xavier's. Evelyn and Xavier were there, but the bass player wasn't.

"Hey Xavier. Isn't it kind of hot in that outfit?" Archer asked, eying his own outfit, a pair of swim trunks and a hole covered white tank top. "And I'm sorry I was late, Samantha...well...she knows what deep throating is now and it concerned me a lot more than it should have."

"Hi Evelyn. You look...um...pretty," he said to Evelyn. Archer was horrible at complimenting. "So...what are we doing today?" he asked.

Xavier looked up from his phone to see Evelyn walk into the studio. He gave her a smile and chuckled at her question, “As usual,” He looked over at her, already at the drums. He gave her a small grin, although it faltered when she asked if he was okay. “Yeah,” He said with a nod, “Yeah, just had a rough night, that’s all.” He then looked down at his phone, sending Archer and Jacob a text.

Get your asses over to the Studio, we need to practice.

He then looked over at Evelyn again, sitting on the floor beside her drums, “We’re gonna win this, right?” He said to her with a small smile. While he knew they had a good chance, there was always that small sliver of doubt that they won’t. Everyone had their reasons to win Battle of the Bands and Xavier’s was to get Grace back.

He sat on the floor cross-legged and mused over what it would like to be a famous singer in a world famous band, to be a mainstream band. He looked at Evelyn before standing up, “So, how was your morning?” He asked, leaning against the wall.
Xavier’s had been rough, the night before his mother went to the hospital for breaking her leg when falling down the front steps and being a fragile woman as she is, she didn’t deal with it well. His dad was taking care of her though so Xavier didn’t have to worry as much.

Maybe practicing would help ease his mind of things, he sure hoped so. Xavier looked up to see Archer waltz his way in, asking about Xavier’s outfit. The young man smiled, “Dude, since when does the weather determine what I wear?” He began to laugh at Archers excuse for being late.

“That’s nice,” He said in laughter, “But I just sent you and Jacob a text, so he better hurry up.” He said, raising his eyebrows as Archer tried to compliment Evelyn but failed and turned his attention to why they were there.

“We need to practice and beat Grace’s band in Battle of the Bands.” He responded, a scowl forming on his lips as he did. There was no try in anything he said, they would beat her band, but he’d also win her back.

As sunlight trickled through the blinds, Jacob swatted at the light that stopped him from sleeping. The buzzing of his phone on vibrate as it rattled on his nightstand forced him to check the text he had just recieved.

Get your asses over to the Studio, we need to practice.

Jacob checked the time. It was well enough into the day that he would be late for anything. He rolled out of bed, put on some clothes, and ran out of the house, diving into his car.

As he pulled up to the studio, he sipped at his coffee that he got on his way there. He went around the back of the car, popped teh trunk, and retrieved his guitar case. As he walked up to the door, he saw that his hands were full. He wasn't stuck on this perplexing situation very long, and opted to kick the door open.

"Hey, I got here, not so sorry, but I'm here."

He rounded the corner to see them all sitting down.

"What's first? I'm ready."
