Bestia Agri: A History

(Historia Animalium Terrae Scripta Sunt in Verbum Canis-A History of the Land of Beasts Written in the Language of the Canem)

Our tale on the history of our great continent Bestia Agri begins several millennia ago with the expansion of life across the land. The Minotaurs came down from the mountains, the Centaurs from the plains, the Luters from the sea, the Dryads from the forests, the Kobolds from the southern isles, the Feles from the rocky east, the Lacerta from the swamps, and the minor races from their respective homelands. Yet among these races, two unnamed raised the banner of conquest and spread their rule across the continent. In the east the empire of Canem rose and united the races of Bestia into a pan centric power, where the people of Alena raised a torch of extermination in the west. Their legacy knows this race by another name today, humans. It was only a matter of time until the powers clashed, and it was two millennia ago when the united peoples under the strong Canem military rule challenged the race centric Alena in the field. A terrible war raged for three hundred years as the united races of Bestia drove the Alena back west; until, finally, after the olive branch of peace was burned too many times the collective powers of the Canem Empire decided somewhat reluctantly that the only fate which could ensure the safety of their peoples from the power thirsty Alena was total genocide. By the end of the war, the once mighty Feles had been lost to the tides of slaughter, what few Lacerta were left returned to their swamps never to be seen again, and the Canem peoples who had raised the most powerful empire on the continent were weakened to the point of splintering away and relinquishing their control. In their absence the Centaurs raced across the lands and conquered the grasslands for themselves, raising mighty kingdoms of agriculture. The Minotaur’s drove the Trolls back into their mountain lairs until they could no longer be budged, and an uneasy alliance formed between the two, leaving the mountainous regions to the castles and fortified cities of the mighty Minotaur people. The Luters crept up the rivers into the lakes and stream and across the coastlines of Bestia Agri and took up the powerful trade empire the Canem had lost control of. The Dryad’s cultivated their numbers within their forests and reinforced their borders from foreign presence as they grew increasingly self-concerned with sustaining the independence from their people, never again wishing to fall to the rule of another. The Kobolds rose on the ashes of their forbearer’s empire and struck up a powerful kingdom in the southeast homeland of the once dominant Canem. The Canem scattered throughout the land into small packs and fell to bitter reminiscing over the once great legacy of their ancestors. What few large packs there were left amongst them formed companies of elite mercenaries or schools of war, science, and philosophy. As for the minor races, the Satyrs left in the low mountains joined the ranks of the centaurs and saw bountiful growth as they expanded beside their powerful allies. While the Centaurs became a more and more military centric power, the Satyrs cultivated their expansive fields and developed trade and luxuries. The Acedias rescinded their presence back into their island of Petra Silva and jealously guarded their control over the fruit and spice trades. Though occasionally seen as mercenaries, they rarely have much contact with foreign species beside the occasional Kobold invasion attempts and the many Luter trading ships which found exchange in the harbors of Petra Silva. The Ents vanished from Bestia Agri in all but the darkest hearts of the Dryad forests. The Trolls dug deeper and deeper into their mountains in search of ore they traded with the centaurs on the surface and isolated themselves from the world at large. The Colubers, who were rarely seen outside their borders due to their sparse numbers before the fall of the Canem Empire, continued their remote relations with the rest of the continent, sustaining their peoples on the trade of masterful works of glass are rare gemstones. The Ferendas gained the opportunity to descend south from the colder northern regions as the Canem Empire expanded. In its wake they dispersed across the territories, either keeping with Canem mercenary bands or populating Minotaur and Centaur settlements in the more northern regions of the islands. In the swamps what few Lacerta were left disappeared as a smaller species seemingly overtook them. Not much is known about where the Eidalons came from, what exactly they are, or how such a species could have gone so long undetected by the rest of the continent but their rise was swift. They never expanded outside their limited territories in the swamps, but those resource rich territories which the Lacertas used as a trade commodity with the rest of the continent fell abandoned; this due to the threat of the deadly Eidalon people. Also known as Dreads, the Eidalonian people are viciously territorial and are rarely seen outside their homelands in the marshes. The few that are quickly became known as infamous assassins or brutal bands of small elite mercenary companies. Their targets disappear in the night, and the Dreads quickly disappear back into their swamps. In the nearly millennia and a half since the War of Peoples, the fall of the Canem Empire, and the expansion of the New Powers across the continent a dispersion of the many peoples began. With the exception of the Ents, Trolls, and Eidalons the majority of the races can at least be found in at least in minor volumes across the continent. Apart from minor conflicts, including maneuvers to suppress Kobold expansion in the southeast by Centaur, Minotaur, and Dryad powers the land remains in a relatively peaceful and prosperous state to this day..
