The light peaked through the window, waking the blonde who was snuggled so comfy within those blankets. She opened her blue eyes, frowning at the light. She had gone to her boyfriend's, Pat, house after work. After a few drinks, they ended up in bed as usual. It was either his apartment or hers. They really didn't care whose. She had even given him a key to her apartment, just to make things more convenient. And even if their love affair fizzled, Alexis would still consider him a good friend. He was one of the only alter friends she had made since dancing at the Cabaret.

She looked over at him and smiled. Still sound asleep. She smirked, leaning over and kissing him. She slipped out of the bed, not bothering to grab a blanket for modesty. She slid on her lacy panties then matching bra. She slid on a black skirt that rested just above her navel and pulled on a lacy red crop top. She didn't mind showing off some skin, especially since she was about to go to work. She slipped on her boots and laced them up. She grabbed her bag and went into the bathroom where she touched up her makeup and brushed her teeth. Her hair still looked fine from the night before.

Alexis slipped out of the bathroom, smirking when she said that he had still not awaken. She took a notepad and wrote a note for him. 'Had to head to work. See you tonight! -Alexis' She kissed the note, leaving a lipstick mark behind. She put it on his nightstand where she knew he'd to see it. She headed out the door, locking it as she left.

As she hurried down the stairs, the blonde searched her purse for a pill bottle. She smiled when she found it. The miracle pill. She opened it, finding it still filled with pills. She had gotten a refill the night before. She popped one of the pills and swallowed. She didn't need water, she did this so often. It was a daily habit now. She couldn't even remember when she first started taking it. She just knew how wonderful it was to be able to use her powers whenever she wanted.

She didn't have to walk that far to get to the Carbaret. She had thought she would have been late but no, Wesley had been. She smiled at him. She had only made it a few minutes before him. She slipped in with the others. It was the same ole speech they got every year on this day. "Don't worry, Wes, we're like a well oiled machine. You don't have to worry about anything going wrong." She told him as he left. She moved through the rows of tables and headed to the back. She found her dressing table.

This was Alexis' second home. Though her parents probably knew what she did for money, they never actually came out and asked her about it, or come here. It was better that was. She didn't want to ruin their reputation. It wasn't like she was a floozy or anything. She just loved to dance. And where was better than the Cabaret to get noticed?

The miracle pills had more than one benefit, the internal clock it provided woke Patrick every morning about an hour before the bar opened, the beginning symptoms of withdrawal manifesting themselves. This time it was cold sweats, he had thrown the sheets off of himself, his naked figure sprawled across the mattress. He reached out around blindly, trying to feel the soft bodice of a young blonde beauty. “Lexiii...” He groaned, rolling on his side to look around the room. He had to blink a few times before realizing he was alone. “Alexis?” He asked again, meaning to wipe the sleep from his eyes, but unintentionally slapping his own face.

Walking from his bed to his dresser, bare assed, the first think he did was light the first cigarette of the day. The first draw of smoke was like a tall cold glass of water on a hot day, taken slow and deliberate. Like a switch when he exhaled, his eyes lit up with awareness. Time to start the day.

His flat was relatively small. It was the back unit above the bar, Ophelia had the larger unit that faced onto the street. The ground floor he had made into his living area, which had a convenient entrance into his office in the bar, and stairs that led into the one big room that was his living space. His bed was pushed up against the far wall, framed by the peaked roof and large windows behind the headboard. There was a stove built into the unit complete with a black kettle chimney, his kitchen built along one wall. He set the kettle on the stove with water to boil, preparing his french press for his coffee, all the while smoking his cigarette.

While waiting for his coffee to brew, Pat finally found a pair of jockeys to put on, cigarette hanging out of his mouth. He could never part from his first cigarette of the day, it was a terrible habit of his. For the last seven years Pat hadn’t been able to function in the morning until he had his first cup of coffee and dosage of nicotine. It wasn’t until after he poured his mug of coffee he found the note from Alexis. He smiled at her delicate penmanship, remembering their night. It was always a little adventure with Alexis, she was a wild ride. The best thing was she didn’t demand anything from him or bombard him with ultimatums or corner him to talk about serious commitment, She just took it easy.

He tossed the note into his drawer, finishing his cigarette and first cup of coffee around the same time. Dressing himself he poured himself another cup of coffee before putting on his shoes and trotting down the stairs. He drank his coffee as he started to prep the bar for the day. They would be closing early due to conjoinment day, so there wasn’t much work to do for the day. He opened the doors and took his place behind the bar, lighting another cigarette and pouring a shot of baileys into his cup.




When Iris walked through the doors of Pat’s Pub he was already closing shop. “Hey, where’s the rush? The bar hasn’t even opened at the ball yet.” she joked. He smirked at her entrance, taking her words as a cue and pulling out two shot glasses to set on the bar.

“Scotch, I presume?” He asked with a quirked eyebrow.

“You know me so well.” She pulled down a few stools he had flipped onto the bar before mopping, gracefully posing herself on one of the stools. It was so rare to see Iris so dressed up, most of the times he came across her it seemed like everything she wore had a hole or a rip, sometimes a little dirt on the butt of her jeans - not that he checked out her butt, often. “Why aren’t you dressed up, aren’t you going out?”

Patrick sighed, pouring the shots for them both. He raised his glass, gesturing for her to do the same, “I know your a naive native Atlantian, dear, but where I come from we don’t let time dictate our actions.” She grinned as she grabbed her own class, offering a toast. “Cheers.” Pat said.

“Cheers.” Iris mimicked, shooting back the shot. She hardly winced, “Alright, scotch straight up, throw in some rocks. Two fingers scotch, one water.” It was as if her order was scripted, but Pat had already gotten her drink started. He served her drink on a coaster, and putting the dirty glasses in the sink.

“I’m headed up to me flat to change, watch the bar for me.”

Iris hopped up from her seat, “What do you mean? I don’t know how to make those fancy cocktails.”

He laughed as he headed back to his office, “Please, all the people who want those fancy drinks are already out with the rest of the sheep. Anyone who’s coming in here want’s a beer or a shot, you’ll be right.”

She wanted to fight him but he was gone too quick, leaving her alone. Shrugging she reached across the bar and grabbed the bottle of scotch he had left out.

Pat was gone before Owen spoke up, mildly startling Iris. "Owen, Pat hasn't sent you home yet?" She recovered, drinking her scotch like water.

She stood and walked to the window, looking at everyone dressed up walking through the streets. She sighed to herself, holding her drink close to her chest. After several beats, she pulled a sleek metal cigarette case from her bag, lighting one as if it was second nature. Looking over to Owen she offered her cigarettes, continuing to speak. "I know this holiday may seem made up from an Alterist perspective, but you have to know, as a native born Atlantian - I always loved Conjoinment day. It's the one day a year the entire city seems united...I don't know. At least from a child's perspective."

She walked back to the bar, topping off her scotch. She always evened her tab eventually. "How long have you been in this underworld, Owen?...I feel like I don't know much about you - you're a bit of a mystery sir." She joked, gesturing her drink at the bartender, the poor sucker now was stuck with her.

The sound of Patrick thumping around over their heads reminded Iris of the real reason why she had showed up. "Oh, Ophelia, I was going to pop in at her place - have you seen her around?"




Although Pat's apartment was a mess from a third party perspective, he was surprisingly aware of where everything was. He hopped in the shower and was able to dress quickly, checking the time every so often. At one point he knocked over a table that had heaps of books and papers strewn across the surface, cursing loudly to himself. He wondered how Alexis was able to tolerate his mess, she never complained about his home or how he chose to live. He wondered what she was doing, was she off to work yet, were they supposed to meet up later?

Pat didn't really know what to do about Alexis, and until forced to think about it, he wouldn't. He didn't want to ruin the fun thing they had going, but it probably wouldn't last - it never does. Lighting a cigarette he remembered the first time they talked, she was the playful and sexy, heaven sent. It felt like ages ago....actually it was probably around four months ago..

Suddenly aware of how long he'd been seeing Alexis, he froze, unable to finish getting changed. It had already been four months? Wasn't this when everything was supposed to come crashing down? Yet here she was, and here he was, happy. As if in autopilot, Pat went through the motions to finish getting ready, changing into a well tailored black suit with a slim tie. When he found himself strolling back into the bar, he snapped back to reality, seeing Owen behind the bar.

"Didn't I send ya home hours ago?" He asked, pointing at the man.

Alexis finished her set and was finally done for the night. Of course, if she wanted to she could have stayed and tried to weasel her way into the other dances or get in another performance but that would mean skipping meeting Patrick. And she had a surprise with him. She went into the bathroom that was for the dancers, glad that the shower was empty. She quickly showered off her sweat, not bothering to get her hair wet. It still looked great- the miracle of hairspray.

She dried off and changed into a strapless, and slightly see through, blue dress that she had gotten especially for this night. She loved Conjoinment Day. It took a bit to lace up the back but once she did it made her figure look even better. She slipped on her heels and made her way back to her makeup table. She reapplied her makeup and lipstick. She packed her things away when one of the bartenders came back, carrying a bag. She squealed, hopping up and turning to him.

"Is that it?" Alexis asked, taking the fancy bag. She peaked into to find a wooden box. Inside that was the Holy Grail of Irish whiskey. Midleton Whiskey. It was one of only a few and it had cost her 1153.88 just for the whiskey. She only managed to get a deal on the shipping because she got it to ship with what the Cabaret was already getting in.

"That's it. Whoever is getting this is a lucky guy." Todd said, shaking his head and walking away.

Alexis grabbed her bag and purse, already carrying the package in her other hand and headed out the back. Now there were a few reasons why she had decided to give this to Patrick. One it was Conjoinment Day and they were friends so it was a nice gesture. Another was two weeks ago, she had done a little math and their four month anniversary was tonight. Now, they were only casually seeing each other. But what if he had planned something or gotten her something and she didn't get him one? She would feel horrible. So she got him the present. Something she knew he would love.

Pushing open the door, Alexis smiled at those in the room, her eyes finally landing on Patrick. "Happy Conjoinment Day!" She said cheerfully. She walked over to Patrick and gave him a peck on the cheek.

"I got you something." Alexis said holding the bag out for him. She felt the need to explain. And what did she do when she was nervous? Ramble.

"I didn't know if you counted but we've been... seeing each other for four months now. I didn't know if you had planned on getting me something or doing anything so just in case, I got you this and even still it makes a great Conjoinment Day gift so don't feel pressured to do anything or get me anything... Seriously, okay?" She bit her lip, stopping herself from saying more and making herself into an idiot. She smiled at him. "I just knew this was something you'd like either way."

"Well don't just stick around to drink all me booze, ya fiend." Pat joked, readjusting his tie and then going back to reorganizing the bottles on the shelf according to the new shipment. "If you insist on hanging around, help me finish up this shipment." Although Pat could be coarse, he had nothing but good intentions - albeit he expressed it in strange ways. Owen was one of the best employees Pat ever had, it would be a real loss when and if he left the bar. He always gave the guy a hard time, but he never meant any harm.

Iris interjected, "You know Pat, I was talking to Owen before you rudely interrupted."

Pat turned to look at Iris, scotch bottle inches from her hands on the bar. With an accusing expression, he plucked the scotch from her, placing it in its place on the shelf. "You know Iris, I was almost done for the night until you walked in." He assumed Owen would start stocking the beers in the fridge, so Pat took it upon himself to start polishing the glasses for tomorrow, putting them all away carefully. Iris had walked to the jukebox and started to play old school American rock when he heard the door open. There was a petite blonde, she sat at the bar in silence. She didn't seem in a rush to get a drink, not even so much as an attempt to get his attention on her part. Pat put aside the glass he was polishing, striding over to the new comer. "Aye, 'ows it goin?" He asked, getting her a cup of water before she even asked. "Can I get you anything?"

As if on cue, the door opened once again, as if a magic portal to the land of gorgeous women. Alexis came through, pausing before she linked eyes with him, looking sinful as usual. "Happy Conjoinment day!" she cheered, walking behind the bar to peck him on the cheek. She held out a gift to him, once again there was that glint in her eyes that made him sense adventure was on the way. "Uh...Owen?" He said to his coworker, gesturing to the mysterious woman at the bar he had been helping, pulling Alexis away a few steps before she could continue her ramble.

He took the box with a smile on his face, she was cute as a bunny when she got nervous. If it wasn't for the fact of him already realizing earlier that today he had been dating the girl for four months, he probably would be a mess in this conversation. Instead he pulled Alexis in for a hug, kissing the top of her head. "This is really sweet, but I didn't know we were doing gifts. It's just another day in paradise." He managed, evading the issue.


"Now, that's not to say I won't accept any presents, because damn am I excited to open this baby." He joked, setting down the box on the counter. He could see Iris watching out of the corner of his eye. He opened the box carefully, almost flinching when he saw its contents. There it was, Midleton Whiskey, he couldn't even remember ever mentioning the brand to Alexis. "Wow," he said, picking up the bottle and turning it in his hands, "I think this is the best gift I've ever gotten." He seemed to be in mild shock, inspecting the bottle. It took him several moments too long to realized he had fallen silent past the appropriate amount of time. He wished he wasn't surrounded by people right now. Even though it was just a simple gift, it was the first time in all his life Patrick felt like someone understood him well enough to get him the perfect gift. Alexis had gotten way too close for comfort, and Patrick could feel his panic kick in.

"God, I wish I had thought to get you something, but I didn't know we we're doing the whole anniversary thing." He almost kicked himself for saying it, he had been with enough women to know that wasn't the right thing to say.

As if sensing the rising awkwardness, Iris chimed in - "You know, I'm buzzed enough, I'm just going to go." And she slipped out onto the street, although Pat could see out the window she had just taken a seat outside and started on another cigarette, which reminded Pat to do the same.

Alexis grinned at him, watching him. "Seriously, it's no big deal. My mom just taught me to never go to a party without a gift." She told him, down playing the gift before he started to open it. She hoped he'd love it. She had done a lot of research before getting him that bottle of whiskey. He had mentioned it once but she didn't understand what was so special about it until she did her reading. Not only did it come from Ireland, it was a very rare and expensive whiskey. She wonder if he had ever had it before.

"Of course not. Even still, I wouldn't let you give it back." She smirked.

A smile played on her red lips as she watched him open the box. He looked like he was in heaven. "Wow, I think this is the best present I've ever gotten." Her smile widened. "You really mean that?" She couldn't help but ask. She pushed a curl behind her ear nervously. She hadn't realized she had been so nervous about him actually liking the gift. It was the first thing she had got him that she actually cared what he thought of.

"God, I wish I had thought to get you something, but I didn't know we we're doing the whole anniversary thing."

Alexis shook her head quickly."No, it's okay. I don't need anything." She told him honestly. She kissed his cheek. "Except maybe a shot of that." She teased him. "I'm glad you liked it."

She smiled at Iris. "I wish I was buzzed. We'll see you at the festival?" She asked her but guessed Iris didn't hear her. Or maybe she didn't like her. She looked at Pat and smiled.

"So the festival... wanna grab something to eat around here or try to get something there?" Alexis asked, moving to sit down at the counter. She smiled at Owen and the other girl.

"Hey... I know you." Alexis said, having to think about it. "You own the Gallery right? I love going in there." She said smiling at her. She extended her hand to her. "I'm Alexis. You probably know my parents the Horns." They were always donating money to the arts.

Aaria was lost in her thoughts; she tapped her fingers on the bar her mind wandering from one subject to the next. She didn’t have a reason to celebrate the day, but she didn’t really have a reason to dislike it. She sighed and shook her head trying to shake away the gloomy thoughts. A voice brought her attention to her left as a girl sat next to her.

"Hey... I know you…You own the Gallery right? I love going in there." Aaria turned to the girl with a smile. The girl extended her hand to her, and Aaria gave it a firm shake.

"I'm Alexis. You probably know my parents the Horns." The girl said still smiling. Aaria examined her closely for a moment. She was a very pretty, petite girl, with a smile that made Aaria smile instinctively.

“Ah yes, the Horns, lovely couple, very kind” Aaria said with a grin. They had always been very generous to the gallery, donating ar supplies and money to the ‘young artist’ fund, a program she ran for the younger generation. She even had a small room in the gallery dedicated to the students artwork.

“My name is Aaria Devoroh, it’s a pleasure to meet you. Happy Cajoinment day. Can I by you a drink?” She asked Alexis as she tried to wave down the barkeep.

Unable to look away from his whiskey, Patrick barely registered when Alexis asked him a question, something about the festival. "Oh, um...whatever you'd like." He said with obvious distance, leaning against the bar and smoking his cigarette with diligence.

Forgetting how to act like a cordial gentleman, Patrick allowed Alexis to go on being a saint while he still hadn't said thank you. Somehow managing to keep the situation light, Alexis had already introduced herself to the woman at the bar. She was unreal, he wasn't sure if she was just pretending to not care he hadn't gotten her a gift or if she was genuinely that laid back of a woman - which again would be unreal.

He thought back to that night they first met, her coming in as he was closing the bar with the other girls from her job, she shone like star. She danced, and it seemed like it was all for him. Things had been so easy, and she hadn't indicated wanted to make matters different - so what was scaring him so much?

Sighing, he looked up to see Iris peaking back in. He chuckled under his breath, waving her in. Grabbing a handful of shot glasses, he lined them up along the bar, coming up behind Alexis to pin her against the bar pulling her close and giving her a big kiss on her cheek. "Thank you love, no man could ask for a better present." Raising his bottle to Iris as she re-entered the bar and the others, "Shots on the house!" He cheered.




It would be difficult to ignore that Patrick was quite the catch of the town, but Iris had seen enough women alternate in and out of his life it was hard for her to ever take any of them seriously. From any outsider perspective, it would be easy to spy Iris' jealousy. Alexis seemed like one of those fun girls from the surface who were able to live a life teetering on the edge of recklessness, not that Iris had taken the time to figure out otherwise.

Orphics were never taken seriously, painted as frail dolls with only their natural magical abilities having kept their society apart. She sighed, lighting yet another cigarette. Besides the fact that Iris had never gotten along with most people, especially pretty girls, she had just felt pushed on the fringe of all the lives around her. Holidays such as conjoinment day reminded her of such feelings, the impending doom of running into her family at the ball looming over her.

She looked back into the bar, locking eyes at Pat who gave an amused grin and beckoned her back in. Contemplating on facing her family or going in for another drink, the answer seemed obvious. She opened the door, glancing down the street to see none other than the Sheriff and the Deputy along with another woman Iris couldn't place a name to, although her face seemed familiar. Assuming they were headed into the pub, she waved, knowing she had made the right decision to stay as Pat called out shots.

Alexis smiled back at the girl as she recognized her parents. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well. Uh, actually my boyfriend owns the pub so let me buy you one." She said laughing softly. She smiled as Owen came over. She had become pretty good friends with Owen since she was typically here before closing. It made sense that they talked a lot.

"Hey, Owen. I would like-" She broke off when Patrick came up behind her. She giggled as he pinned her to the bar and kissed her cheek. She turned to look at him, grinning. "You're welcome. I'm glad you like it." She said to him.

After all this time, how did he still give her butterflies? If things were ever to get serious between them, it wouldn't be because she pressured him. She truly cared for him and wouldn't force him into anything he didn't want. She also knew he wasn't used to a serious type relationship. She was happy just to plan it by ear. "Yeah! Shots on the house! Isn't my boyfriend the greatest?"

Alexis giggled, leaning over and giving him an affection peck on the cheek. She sat back down at the bar. She smiled at Aaria. "That's Patrick. Do you know anyone else here? I can introduce you around." She offered. She smiled at Iris, hoping to lighten things up between them. She wouldn't mind having a few friends that were girls. Besides her family and Owen, she didn't really have many friends. "Hey, Iris! Why don't you come sit over here with us?"
