|{Appearance}|

weight: 80 kg; 176 lbsXXXXXheight: 1.80 m; 5'11"

The first thing almost everyone notices about Bjorn Martell is that smile. That beaming grin radiates warmth, those dimples and the sincerity in his clear green eyes putting almost anyone at ease. Though that smile could win hearts alone, Bjorn's other features deserve mention. Messy curls of dark, golden blonde hair tops his head, frequently caught on end thanks to his habit of running his fingers through it. His body is made of toned muscle, his tall, athletic frame easily accommodating the muscles without looking particularly bulking. The clothes Bjorn wears are not chosen solely to emphasis the impressive body beneath, instead he picks his garments on their comfort and how many appreciative nods he gets from women on the street. He knows how to dress to accentuate toned arms, though for the most part he's found in nursing scrubs. He bares no tattoos or piercings, in fact the only marking on his body is a small scar running along his left shoulder that stands as a reminder of one playful fight gone wrong with his two younger brothers.

|{Power}|
Probability Manipulation
Bjorn's power allows him to manipulate probability, causing unlikely things to happen or likely things not to happen. Events that many might claim as simply good or bad luck are his to control, altering the likelihood of someone falling down a flight of stairs or finding a coin on the ground. He rarely uses his powers for ill, instead using it in small bursts to help prevent unlucky occurrences befalling patients at the hospital. Of course, it cannot be said that he doesn't use his power for self-gain. He's used it occasionally to tip the scales in his favour when flirting with a girl or in competitions with others (one reason why he's always watched carefully at the casino).

|{Hobbies || Talents}|
Believe it or not, Bjorn is quite the green thumb. He enjoys cultivating surface blooms, his little garden holding many of his favourite flowers. He's a handy cook, favouring exotic dishes. Given Bjorn's job it's no surprise that he's extremely well-practised with first-aid. He's also been boxing since he was a young boy, one reason why his body is in such good shape. He also speaks German and English fluently.

|{Fears || Weaknesses}|
Bjorn fears becoming addicted to the Miracle Pill like his mother, for that reason he stays away from the drug. No matter how tempting the power might be he's terrified of losing his mind. Similarly he's scared of his brothers following the path their mother has taken. If trying to read Bjorn's scrawling writing, you might need him there to translate it. His handwriting is incredibly hard to decipher. He also can't seem to function in untidy environments, seemingly having to tidy before he can relax.

|{Secrets}|
His mother currently resides in the mental wing of the hospital, her addiction to the Miracle pills pushing her past the limits of her sanity. Bjorn is ashamed and deeply worried for the woman, and visits her whenever he can.

|{Personality}|

Generally laid-back, Bjorn is the type of guy many feel completely at ease around. His beaming smile is frequently found spread across his expressive face, inviting friends and even strangers to approach. He's a naturally friendly individual, constantly seeking out friends to spend time with and happy to strike up conversations with strangers should something catch his interest. His humour seems to compliment this care-free persona, and he's likely to laugh at any joke that catches his fancy. He has a quick tongue, easily able to keep up with the banter of others as they trade jokes. Though extremely witty, his remarks and jokes are never intentionally hurtful. Even when he's joking with his brothers he never means any real harm, despite the fact that he and the two younger Martell's trade teasing insults as easily as other siblings trade compliments.

His carefree attitude might be the most easily apparent, but behind that breezy smile is a quieter aspect of the male nurse. He worries, almost constantly, about his family. His mother's poor health and the potential for his brothers to follow her constantly plays on his mind. He hides those nerves as best as he can, and in fact it's only when he is alone that his dimpled smile will fall, replaced with a look of anxiety. Bjorn is incredibly protective of his family. Though he and his brothers have had their issues in the past, as many siblings have, that would never stop him from going to great lengths to help them and keep them safe. The same can be said for his close friends, be they Alterist or Orphic.

As a nurse Bjorn sees a lot of pain and grief. Naturally an empathetic person Bjorn tries his utmost to put patients at ease and comfort grieving relations. He's good at perceiving people's emotions and usually knows the right way to act and what to say to offer comfort. He uses his power when he can to help push luck in favour of those most in need, wishing he could do more yet refusing to sample the Miracle Pills after what they have already put his family through. While he doesn't use his powers to cheat, he's not against improving the likelihood of a pretty girl taking the seat next to him, or decreasing the probability that his boss will notice when he's late to work. It's only little things, but even they can help immensely in the right situation.

|{History}|

Bjorn was born of the union between Marissa Jager, a previously respected German scientist, and Christopher Martell, a Swiss author. His parents moved to Atlantis shortly before his birth, each quickly easing into life in the city. The first of three sons, it was apparent from a young age that Bjorn and his brothers had inherited their mother's blonde locks and their father's sea-green eyes, each son looking like perfect imitations of their parents. Deemed too young by their parents to receive the needed injections to gift them with Orphic-like powers, Bjorn and his brother spent most of their childhood running through their home, causing trouble, and instigating play fights with each other that usually led to more serious physical altercations. When Bjorn turned thirteen is birthday present was the surgery that would gift him with powers. He received the ability to manipulate probability, a gift he's cultivated and honed over the years until he can use it with precision and not risk fainting from over-use.

If asked Bjorn would say he feel into nursing because he loves helping people. His easy smile puts patients at ease and he has a manner about him that offers comfort. He was also able to occasionally use his power sparingly to tip the scales of probability in favour of a patient's survival and recovery. When the Miracle Pills emerged he was tempted to try, realising how many more people he could help but that amount of power. However he soon found the temptation to use his power constantly was too much, there are some things that should be left completely up to fate. So, he gave them up. Luckily for Bjorn he seemed unaffected by the addictive qualities that seemed to grip so many others. His mother was one such victim, quickly falling prey to the debilitating effects of the pills. She now resides in the hospital's mental unit, unable to function without ingesting the drug. Bjorn visits when he can, attempting to hold his family together as they struggle through the tough times. His younger brothers, Alaric and Lucus, both claimed to have taken themselves off the drug, though Bjorn still worries that they might follow the path of their mother.

As for the growing war, Bjorn sees evidence of it everyday at work. He doesn't agree with the use of the Miracle Pill, but he doesn't agree with the way the Orphic radicals have protested the drug either. Given that he has friends among both the Alterist and Orphic communities, he would prefer to see this settled peacefully.

~ January 15th, 8 pm. ~

ImageImage Tonight is a very special night. Perhaps the most special night if you don't count Christmas or New Years. January 15th is Conjoinment Day in Atlantis. That's the day when the surface dwellers first came down into the underwater city, connecting themselves with the seafarers, creating one indivisible population that still resides inside Atlantis's great protection today. Traditionally, the holiday is spent in great celebration. The Cabaret, Pub, and Casino are usually packed, and even on the streets, crowds of socialites are chatting and cheering. Everyone is dressed to the nines, whether they be dancing in the club or just chilling out at home. It's supposed to be a very peaceful, unified day full of fun and excitement. But during these times of segregation, revolution, and change, tradition may not last for too long...

Working on Conjoinment day was never ideal, not when one could hear the festivities occurring throughout the city. But public holiday or not, the hospital had to be staffed. If it wasn't the stream of revellers being brought it for minor injuries, it was the long term patients that needed care. Bjorn Martell had recently been assigned to one of the hospital wings that cared for children, the ward coloured brightly with paintings aimed at making the sick children happier. While it was one of the sadder wards on the hospital - because children should never be confined to their beds due to illness - Bjorn was always happy to work it. He was good with children, his easy grin stretching from ear to ear as he made the rounds. He never talked down to them and always made them feel as if they were the most important people in Atlantis. And to Bjorn his patients really were the most important people around. That's why, rather than increasing his own luck, he often used his probability altering powers on the sickest patients. He'd carefully tip the scales in favour of a speedy recovering, doing every little thing he could to make sure they were alright.

Today saw Bjorn's power already pushed to its limit. He'd helped a three year old in room five, helped the receptionist downstairs, and had just finished improving one four year old's chance of survival for her surgery. They were little things, but they should help. Though now Bjorn knew that if he used any more he'd probably faint. He didn't take the miracle pills, having seen first hand the trauma they could put families through. His own mother had lost her sanity thanks to the pills, and he didn't plan on following her example. Pushing those thoughts to the back of his mind Bjorn focuses on his work as he pushes open a private room, entering with a bright smile on his face.

"Happy conjoinment day sweetie." Bjorn coos as he glides into the room, turning merry eyes on the seven year old sitting in the middle of her hospital bed. The young girl laughs and points at Bjorn's head. The male nurse pauses and makes an exaggerated effort of attempting to look at whatever has caught the girl's attention. "Is there something on my head?" He asks, jiggling his head from side to side and making his eyes go wide when the sound of bells begin to tinkle at the movement. "Oh my gosh! What's on my head?!" He cries, laughing along with the young girl as he attempts to shake the attire from his head. Eventually he lets his hands find the bells, feeling down the comical headdress as he continues to chuckle at the delighted giggles coming from his patient. "Now, how do you suppose those got on my head?" He jokes, pulling what look like felt reindeer horns from his head and holding them up with a confused expression on his face.

"You put them there!" The girl giggles, pointing at them as she laughs.

Bjorn makes a shocked face before holding them out to the young patient, "That was silly of me, especially when they so obviously suit you better."

The girl giggles but makes no protest as Bjorn places the bells on her head, and she gives an experimental shake once he's stepped back, her face lighting up as the bells chime. "Can I keep them?" She asks, tapping at the bells with her hands as her eyes watch Bjorn begin checking the machines.

"Of course you can keep them, so long as you give the bells a good jingle the next time the doctor comes in." Bjorn answers with a laugh. The young girl promises and Bjorn finishes his visit listening to the chorus of tiny bells.

With many promises of returning to visit her soon Bjorn leaves the room, taking a moment to check the roster to see how long he has until he finishes work. He doesn't have long, and then he knows that he'll be heading to one of the party areas ready to enjoy the rest of the holiday.
