Personality

Ray is a kind soul who certainly wishes to do what's best, though he is by no means a "saint." His biggest regret from his previous life is being unable to save his daughter from the fire that killed them both. If he could have prevented it, he certainly would have. Even to this day, he thinks of how he could have taken safety precautions. Courteous to those he trusts, Ray occasionally speaks up for himself when met with opposition. However, he's a pacifist by nature and hates major conflict. He's a caring man, though, who protects those he loves as much as possible.

One of his greatest worries is being grouped with others. Ray has always wanted to be his own person, mostly because of his upbringing in a crowded household where everyone shared clothes and his parents mixed up their names. He can be quite "nosey" and poke around in the business of other people even when he shouldn't, though he justifies it as looking out for them. He was once a romantic, but has sobered now as he sees life truly isn't what it's chalked up to be. His loyalty is usually unwavering, especially toward those he trusts and cares for.

Around crowds, he grows a bit shy and, for this reason, is a bit of an introvert. Ray can be a bit solitary at times, but he has a small group he trusts at a time. Most confrontations with women intimidate him nowadays since he still misses his ex and because he was inadvertently the reason he died. Though it doesn't really agree with his current state, Ray also likes to believe in a rebirth after death. He sometimes has a hippie-like outlook on things and has been known to drown himself in music from the 60s and the 70s while he writes.

History

The end of World War II in America brought about not only peace with Europe, but dramatic increase in the population dubbed "the baby boom." Ray Cunningham was a product of this era, born in February of 1948. His father was a farmer from Ohio and his mother was, as the Journey song says, "just a small town girl." It was a simplistic life, growing up in the 1950s. Though he already had two older sisters, Ray was soon joined by a set of boy twins and another girl. His home was a small one and it quickly grew far too cramped for his family.

Ray found that the he and his siblings were, in the eyes of his parents, slowly merging into a single group of children. Seeking individualism or some way to prove he was different, Ray turned to different outlets to prove his talent. One week, he was running laps on the track. The next, he was running a paintbrush over a canvas. Still, he couldn't seem to find himself until he put a pen to paper. Words bled on to the paper with such ease and such grace that he swore this was what he had been born to do.

His quest to become his own person had gone to far, however. His father, who had expected a football star out of his eldest son, was the first to push him aside. The others followed soon. Yet, they still helped pay for him to leave in 1966 for Allegheny College as an English major. At college, he seemed to finally find a place where he didn't mind fitting in. The hippie movement was in full swing, and he found himself a part of it. Beatles records and Grateful Dead posters covered his dorm as he worked toward the English major. However, halfway into his sophomore year, he suddenly dropped his English major and pursued a degree in journalism, believing it would take him further.

It did, in fact. After graduating, Ray found himself working for a newspaper in the suburbs of New York. One of his interviews brought him to the workplace of a young woman named Lisa who he found himself instantly falling for. The two married in the summer of 1978 and their daughter was born in 1980 after they purchased a large, Victorian house outside of New York. The relationship lasted for quite a while but Ray soon found himself in another period of wanting to be an individual. He started to drift away from Lisa who grew upset with him. Eventually, the two decided a divorce would be the best.

Lisa moved out of the home and in with her boyfriend, leaving Ray with their only child. On December 18th of 1988, Lisa got into a fight with her boyfriend and threatened to move back in with Ray. Angered, this boyfriend found his way to the "Murder House" and set the place on fire with Ray and his daughter inside. The two died in the flames and have been stuck in the house since. Like a few of the ghosts, they "rent" a condo from Harvey. Ray wants to move on beyond the veil, but he's afraid of completely leaving his life behind.
