Annette

There were teeth and fur and growls.

Some of which came from Annette. She struggled against the hot bodies of wolves, forcing back the panic that threatened to suffocate her. Behind the panting and growls, she could hear Eleanor's whimpers and that was what was keeping her fighting. She needed to help her sister. She had to be there for her. She gritted her teeth and tried to growl back, but the wolves weren't threatened. She was shaking, she could keep the panic from clouding her thoughts with pure determination, but her body still reacted to the fear. How could she not be scared?

She felt a set of teeth press into her skin and she cried out, still struggling, still listening to Ella's whimpers. But as her sister's moaning faded, Annette's determination did too. She was exhausted and the pain was overwhelming. She knew she had been scratched and bitten once, and she gave up thrashing against the mass of brown fur. The wolves that were occasionally spotted in the woods were supposedly harmless - they'd only attack if you threatened them, but Annie and Ella hadn't done anything of the kind. It was almost like the wolves came looking for them.

Although her body had gone limp, there were tremors spasming through her muscles. Her skin was burning and stretching and changing. Her throat was on fire and, although she couldn't hear past her pulse hammering in her ears, she was sure it was from screams. It wasn't long before the pain drowned her.

For the first time in days, Annette allowed the light to trickle into her vision. She had forced back any flicker of consciousness since she had been taken here, with the fear the pain would only sharpen if she allowed herself to wake up. But for once there was only a dull ache deep in her bones - from exhaustion and the echo of changing. "Changing," she repeated to herself, glad she still had a voice, but chills scattered over her skin. She had given up screaming after a while. The pain hadn't lessened, but her energy had.

For a second, she didn't know what she was supposed to be thinking. After days of blocking out any thoughts that would make the pain worse, she wasn't sure what was meant to come to mind. There was just to cool wooden floor beneath her and the smell of dust and pine in the air. But then she remembered. "Ella," Annette sat up, ignoring the pain that jolted through her stiff muscles. She had been a wolf. A wolf.

Frantically, she glanced at her hands and body, but it was all human. Was it real? No, it was. She knew it was. She could remember the way the floor felt different under her padded feet, the vibrations that traveled through the wooden boards made sense to her: person walking down the hall. Sometimes she could tell how heavy they were, what mood they were in, just from the way the floor moved. Then the colours in the room were sharper and the smells were like fireworks to her nose; beautiful and colourful and everywhere. "Ella," she said again. Had her sister been through the same thing? Whatever this was. Annette curled her hands into fists and gritted her teeth. She was sure someone had done this to her - she vaguely remembered a man in the room. And she was sure, if they had hurt her sister, she'd make them pay.

She made it to her feet, leaning against the wall to steady herself as the blood rushed out of her head. Her whole body felt weak and, despite everything that had happened, she was hungry. The door across the room opened and Annette sniffed the air, but as soon as she knew she'd done it, she was revolted. I am not a wolf. Not now at least and she refused to let something control her. But she knew the smell, the whole room stunk of it. A boy moved into the room and a growl slipped through Annette's lips.

Matt

Mat sneezed, and then looked around him at the tall trees and their big green leaves. He loved it outside, he loved it here.
Matt took his hands out of his pockets and rubbed the tired feeling from his eyes. He was awake the whole night, staying up with the girl he had bitten.
He had been worried about her, mostly because some people’s bodies will not accept the change and eventually bring death.
This girl was definitely safe. Well, except for the fact that she was a wolf now.

Mat unzipped his jacket and went back inside. He drank some water from a glass, and then gargled with the rest of it. He still felt the blood in his mouth, even though it was long gone.
It was probably his conscience that was screaming at him.
Mat walked back over to the door of the room that this girl was in. He knelt down to level he thought the girl would be on, on the floor, and pressed his ear to the door.
He could hear her calling for someone again. The ‘Ella’ girl.
Matt sighed a little, he had wanted to help her, take the pain of her changing body away. He had already felt a bit of a connection with her.
This maker bond was bothering him a little. He did not want this girl to feel forced loyalty or any such thing.
He sneezed again.
Matt got back onto his feet and pushed the door open. He peeked into the room to see the girl leaning against the cold wall.
Mat pushed into the room further and closed the door behind him. This was probably the most responsive he had seen the girl in a while.
Perhaps it would be his opportunity to talk to her.
“Hey...” He started casually and gave a little wave as he approached her rather slowly.
He stuck his hands back into his pockets and inspected her with a little bit of a stare. “Are you feeling better?” He questioned her with a frown wrinkled across his forehead.
Matt looked down at his jacket and back up at the girl. He quickly pulled the jacket off and offered to put it around her shoulders.
“My name is Matt.” He smiled as he stood in front of her, offering the jacket. “What is your name, dear?”
Matt wanted so badly to not have been smiling, because he knew what she was going through. The pain of changing and the longing for someone named ‘Ella.’ He went through it as well, some time ago. But when you’re born this way it is much, much easier to deal with.

Matt held his hands up defensively.
“It’s alright, you should rest, Annette.” Matt said in a calm, soft voice – trying to sound soothing.
He turned around and walked over to the opposite wall, sitting down against it.
As Annette seemed to remember him sinking his teeth into her, Matt couldn’t help but let his head drop as the memory recalled itself in his mind as well.
He sighed and hugged his legs, as if he was the one who was weak and changing, aching.
Matt looked up as her ‘accusations’ started.
"What did you do to me?"
"Did you hurt her - my sister?"
"If you've hurt her..."

Mat raised his head again, looking at Annette with her forehead against the wall.
“Ella? Ella is your sister isn’t she?” Mat asked as Annette’s voice – repeatedly saying the name – popped up.
Matt refrained from saying that he had no idea who she is, trying to keep Annette calm and from attacking him. He got to his feet and approached her, slowly, sneaking closer. He stood behind her, trying to make the air around him calming.
He had no idea how to explain it.
“You were given a gift.” He said in a soft, calming whisper - directly quoting the bastard that told him he was supposed to be happy about being a beast.
“Look, sweetheart, as soon as you feel better we can go looking for your sister, alright? I promise.” Matt said as he turned away from Annette. Keeping watch over this girl again would make him a little too bored. He might even fall asleep.
“I’ll bring you some food.” Were his last words before leaving the room.
Matt walked over to the kitchen and threw together a sandwich and poured a glass of coke.
He returned to Annette and set the food down near her.
“I don’t know if you like coke, but it might help you feel a little better.” Mat said in a bit of an irritated tone and sat down against the wall again.
Watching Annette.

Annette sniffed as he left the room. Her body was exhausted and hurting, but her mind was overwhelmed with emotions and thoughts. She was angry. Angry that he had the cheek to pretend whatever had happened to her was a gift, angry that she didn't know or understand what was going on, but she was afraid; no one had explained to her what was happening and she didn't have a clue where Ella was, maybe she was going through this too. On top of it all, she was sad, but she couldn't work that one out. She slid down to the floor just as Matt came back in.

“I don’t know if you like coke, but it might help you feel a little better.” He sat against the opposite wall and watched her. She narrowed her eyes, stomach growling, and listened. She didn't feel safe here and her new instincts, wherever they'd come from, were telling her to be wary. But she was hungry. She picked up the glass, enjoying the cool under her fingertips and brought it to her face. Without realising what she was doing, she sniffed it, as though checking it hadn't been poisoned. She shook her head, her rational, human-mind telling her she was being ridiculous. She took a sip, unsure whether her weak body was ready for so much sugar, but as it trickled down into her stomach, she didn't feel the familiar nausea creeping up. She took another sip, not taking her eyes off Matt. She put the glass down, already feeling the sugar trickling into her blood. The energy wouldn't last long, but for now, she was grateful. She eyed the sandwich, but didn't reach for it.

"Where am I?" She asked. She could smell the forest on his clothes and the jacket around her shoulders, but that didn't mean she knew where she was.

Matt smiled tiredly, pleased that she took the drink. She needed it.
Matt eyed the sandwich. It was rare for him to make anything. He usually needed to be starving for him to produce such a good looking sandwich. He eyed it because he hoped his efforts wouldn’t be wasted.
“We are in Michigan.” Matt said as he rubbed his eyes again. “White Pine.”
He looked at the girl rather thourougly. He wound, the one he gave her, was not as bad as it was a few hours ago and she seemed quite young and beautiful. Matt let a corner of his lips twist into a small smile.
“We usually come here on different circumstances.” He said, referring to the cabin.
Mat noticed her sniffing everything as well. That is pretty normal – everything smells new and different. He was used to the smell of all the things he saw and worked with on a daily basis.

Annette nodded and pulled the plate with the sandwich closer, still avoiding getting to close to Matt. It smelt good, really good. "What circumstances?" She asked, before picking up the bread and taking a large mouthful. It probably wasn't the best thing she'd ever eaten, but because she hadn't eaten in ages, it tasted brilliant. She muffled a thank you through the food. She watched Matt carefully, trying to memorise his features and mannerisms. He was good looking; dark hair, tanned skin and tall. He was muscular too.

She swallowed. "Are you like me - with the whole... wolf thing." She didn't trust him, but he didn't seem to know where Ella was, so there was nothing for it but to accept that he seemed to be honest and looking out for her.

“Different meaning not with girls we basically kidnapped and turned into the things we ourselves don’t want to be.” Matt answered truthfully.
Matt chuckled. “Yes.” He answered as he watched her eat the sandwich. “I was born one.”
He left the smile on his lips as he leaned his head back against the wall and closed his eyes. Matt could almost feel himself falling asleep.
“Do you need me to get you anything else. Like a change of clothes or would you perhaps like to take a bath... or you can do both, maybe go look for your sister?” Matt started speaking in an attempt to keep himself awake. He opened his eyes and looked at Annette.

Annette chewed slowly as she processed the information. At least he was being honest with her. He closed his eyes and let his head rest against the wall. Annette took the opportunity to watch him, trying to see a hint of wolf, even though he was in his human form. He smelt different, she could tell that much, but he seemed more... aware than a normal person.

“Do you need me to get you anything else." Annette jumped as he spoke, almost assuming he wasn't going to say anything more and turned her gaze to the now empty plate. "Like a change of clothes or would you perhaps like to take a bath..." A bath would be nice. Her body was sore and a soak in hot water would soothe them. "Or you can do both, maybe go look for your sister?” Annette sat upright, her eyes wide.

"Yeah. I need to find her," she said and climbed to her feet, still slightly unsteady, but better for the new energy making its way to her bloodstream. She steadied herself against the wall, knowing she couldn't walk quickly; her muscles were too stiff.

"Alright..." Matt said as he pushed his tired body up from the cold, wooden floor. He smiled at Annette, who was clearly watching him, and gathered the plate and glass that were both now empty.
"First we get you that bath." He said, almost offered as he stopped in front of the beautiful, young girl and held his free hand out towards her.
Matt could tell that she was still weak and figured that she might need a shoulder to lean on for now.
He would treat her nicely, to prove to her that he had no intention of ever hurting her or her sister, the anonymous Ella.
Mat nodded reassuringly at Annette and smiled a friendly, caring smile.
He was perhaps trying a little bit too hard with impressing her, but perhaps it would pay off.

Besides, it wouldn't hurt to show the others that he allowed his maker bond to mean something.
Matt looked at the girl closely as he waited for her to take his hand, or make her own way to the door.
Whatever she chose, he understood the notions. He knew she was scared and sore, confused most of all. He could feel it through the small bond that was sort of forced between them.

Annette glanced from his open hand to his face, her eyes narrowed. She liked to be independent and wanted to show Matt that she preferred to do it by herself. She rarely accepted even Ella's help, but she wasn't sure she could make it to the door without someone to lean on. She pursed her lips, trying to show it wasn't a sign of friendship, but necessity, and took his hand. It was warm, while hers was cold. "A bath would be nice," she murmured and let him help her over to the door. Her legs were shaky and weak, but it felt good to be moving and the food was helping to settle her stomach. For the first time in a while, the thing that was inside her, threatening to change her into a wolf, wasn't on the edge of her skin and tingling on her tongue. At least for now, she felt human.
