Mount Fuji had always been shrouded in mystery. Its elevation, while not as impressive as many other mountains in the world, make its ascension a dangerous activity for the unprepared and inexperienced, as it isn't unusual for the temperature to drop below freezing point in its higher half. Little to no man-made shelter or rest stops exist in the area, especially due to the notorious reputation of the nearby Aokigahara forest. Man-eating creatures and haunting beasts are said to prowl the region even in broad daylight.
It is said that if you are lucky, you may stumble onto a decrepit shrine an old hermit calls home. Safety and repose is offered to those he deems worthy, but those fortunate few would often wake up the next time alone with no traces of the shrine or the hermit as if they were mere apparitions.
