Blink World

Blink World

0 INK

In this RPG, players will explore the dark past of a small town, both in the town’s reality and in another world, a façade of the town itself.

1,945 readers have visited Blink World since Darrion Ruse created it.

Introduction

A smile began to slowly creep along his face as he said, “Everything is significant here. Pay attention to the little differences, you’re dead if you don’t. Keep track of your every wrong, you’re dead if you don’t. And for the love of God, make sure you be careful around us two, you’re dead if you don’t,” and as the smile gained a deviant, devilish quality, the axe slid down his arm and his fingers snatched it up, preparing to swing.

Story Explanation:

Blink is a horror/mystery set in the small town of Chippewa (The town and all places within it will be made up, despite sharing a name with a real town.) Players will direct the story with characters of their own creation while I act as a GM of sorts through the use of two characters of my own creation, Ellie and Seamus. These two characters will be the focus point of the story and the mystery, and the more often one encounters them, the more often they will see the story progress.

There are two faces of this town, reality and what we will call the “blink.” The blink is not a physical place, per say, but the manifestation of the horror elements of the game. While characters are in the regular version of the town, they will establish character routines, storylines, and relationships with other characters. Posting while in the town will help grow your character and prepare them for their next encounter with the blink version of the town. When posting within the town, unless it is something really major like unfolding a major plot-point or doing something that really effects another character, you will pretty much have free reign to do whatever you want and expand however you want. Posts in this world can be as long or short as you want, just make sure you give enough information for me to work on.

Now, this “blink” refers to a shift in reality around a specific focus point or event that may cause characters terror, trauma, or even death. Sometimes the blink will yield an extremely realistic result, a reality so close to the original that it is indistinguishable until some event tilts that reality into a destructive spiral. Other blinks will start out as a terrifyingly different reality, one which characters must navigate through to survive. When writing a blink encounter for a character, I will be examining the previous town posts of that character and centering the events of that blink on a certain focus from the town posts.

The amount of blinks a character will experience will not be random, but will be directly influenced by player decisions. Blinks will always be accompanied by Ellie and/or Seamus. If a player simply wants to keep their character safe and advance just advance their own, personal story further, with limited blinks, they can avoid Ellie and Seamus, and by doing so avoiding the blinks. However, the closer a character gets to either Ellie or Seamus the more they will experience blinks and the more involved they will be in the story.

So, after reading all that other stuff, you might be confused, but simply put, this game is based the idea that you’ll get out what you put in. If you take the time to write out a good character, make detailed posts, and try to involve yourself in the story I will take the time to do the same for you. Granted, depending on the amount of player we have, it might take some time for me to figure out how to progress, and it’ll take some time to respond to everybody but please be sure I will try to keep up.

Example:

(I will also include a full version of the examples within as a post, so if you want to see a more detailed example look in the posts, under the extra character I will make named Jeffery)

In his town posts, a character named Jeffery had a daily routine of walking to school with Ellie and Seamus. In one his town posts, he walked to school without Seamus because Seamus was running late. A seemingly insignificant detail, but I could easily use this as the focus for a blink. The blink world for this situation would be something like an endless road, with a crazed Seamus trying to catch up to and kill Jeffery and Ellie. The player would then have to make choices within the blink to figure out the cause of the blink and come up with a solution.

Excerpt from a Blink:

(Again, I will be creating an example character and use the following excerpts in a post so people can see something of how the game is going to run)

(Post through the eyes of Ellie) “…I understand you are confused, Jeffery, but you have to believe me. This may look like our regular world right now, but it’s already starting to get dark, and scary, and you need to figure out where you messed up yesterday and set it right before something bad happens. I can’t lose another friend to this world.” Tears sprung in Ellie’s eyes as she pleaded with her friend.

(Post through the eyes of Player) …Jeffery didn’t know what to believe. However, as more and more bad things happened he didn’t have many other options, and with Seamus quickly approaching the streetlights lit his form just enough to show the sparkling axe head. Without thinking, Jeffery grabbed onto Ellie’s arm and began running in the opposite direction, away from the growing sound of laughter.

(Post through the eyes of Ellie) The dim lights overhead stretched on and on as they ran ahead, and continued to do so as far as she could see. Despite living in that town, and even that street all her life, Ellie didn’t recognize anything in this hellish copy of a world. “Where are we going? We can’t run in here! We have to figure out what the blink wants, we have to stop it that way!” Tears were streaming down her face by this point, streaking off her cheeks as freezing wind ripped past them.
Even though these examples don’t show the end result of the scenario you can see the pattern, Ellie/ Seamus post presents situation, player response, and Ellie/ Seamus post shows result.

Toggle Rules

Game Mechanics:
Town-Reality: When posting in the real town, as I said, you guys have pretty much free reign. However, on your first post, I really need you to write a pretty long and detailed intro that helps introduce a character and their daily routines, as well as their relationship with Seamus and Ellie. Beyond that, you want to start a deep and lasting friendship between character x and character y? Go ahead, that’s just up to you and the other character’s owner. Just know that pretty much anything you post in the real town is free game for me to pick at and use when a character is involved in a blink.

Town-Blink: Posts in the Blink will be a little more structured than the town. I will indicate to a player that their character will be involved in a blink before doing so, either in a post or a private message to that player, depending on how the story is progressing and who is involved. Any amount of characters can be involved in a blink (there will be at least one mass blink, with everybody), though Ellie and/or Seamus will always be present, as ally or enemy. As we progress through a blink I will present situations and decisions for players through the view of Ellie or Seamus (See Below Example) and, depending on how players respond to the situations they are given, I will prepare various results beforehand for the character. If a player wants their character to survive in a blink they have to pay attention and solve the blinks individual mystery/puzzle. After a blink is completed, assuming a character lives, they will be returned to the town-reality and the events within the blink will be undone (so if Seamus was trying to murder a character, but they escape the blink, Seamus will no longer try to murder them.)

Main Storyline: As more and more blinks are progressed through, players will learn more about the town, Ellie and Seamus, and their own characters. At certain points in time, I may email or PM players private information or clues to the mystery of the town and its residents. But, with great power comes great responsibility and whatnot so if you get extra info, your character will soon be a key player in a major plot revelation and the center of a very involved (and murderous) blink.
GM Rules: Since I listed all these guidelines for you guys, I figured it’s only fair that you know the rules I set out for myself from the beginning of the game. Just so you all know, I will not be pulling this story out of my butt, but I also will not have every potential move listed out. It’s impossible. When approaching the main story, I will have the major events and revelations planned out at least two blinks beforehand and will have some endgames in mind as we go, but you all drive the story so if you direct it one way, I will have to have an ending that suits how the story has progressed thus far. If somebody really impresses me with their intuition or an awesome solution to a problem, I’ll help them out. On the other hand, I’ll have kill conditions prepared and there will always be a distinct possibility of character death.

Character Death: After a character dies they will no longer be available for use in the story, however a player will have the option to make a new character and I will occasionally bring a dead character back for use in blinks and/or flashbacks.

For the first time in a long while, the twins actually showed up to school, almost on time. "I wonder what was up with Mr. Covelli this morning," Jane murmured as they walked into the school, shrugging her backpack higher up onto her shoulders as she and her brother walked down the hall together. She learned a long time ago, no one does anything nice without expecting something in return. She bit her bottom lip as she thought the old couple and how nice they had been to her and Max so far, it was just so unfamiliar to her, she still felt there had to be an ulterior motive.

Jane was still on this train of thought when Seamus bumped into her, causing her to nearly fall on her butt if it weren't for her brother's fast reflexes. Though, the surprise did cause her to bite down on her lip a little too hard, drawing a little blood. "Oh, Seamus!" She said in surprise a hand going to her bitten lip, though she wasn't angry, for some reason it was impossible for her to get angry with Seamus. Honestly, at first, she hadn't really liked the nickname they'd given her, feeling it was their way of making fun of her, but gradually it started to grow on her and she realized that it was a term of endearment not one of ostracism, and now she kind of liked it.

"Nope, sorry Seamus, we haven't seen her. Literally just walked in the door." Jane said with a small laugh, running a hand through her hair, giving a small shrug of her shoulders. Realizing her brother had been a little too quiet, she looked over her shoulder at Max, raising a curios eyebrow. She knew her brother could be a tad bit over protective of her, though with everything they'd been through she couldn't really blame him, but some times it could get annoying especially when she considered it unwarranted or unwanted. Plus Max seemed to enjoy getting into fights, she felt like she was just an excuse he used to justify it sometimes.

Jane had made it clear to Max a while ago that Seamus was off limits though, she didn't want her brother torturing the poor guy. She'd seen how her brother could get especially if he was in a bad mood, though it seemed they were few and far between these days and she couldn't help but to think it was because of the Covelli's.

“Who knows? Old man was probably excited to get another check from Uncle Sam or somethi-” Max had been cut off mid sentence as his sister became the victim of a runaway animal. At a second glance it hadn't been a rabid beast at all. No, it had been something far far worse that collided with his only family member.

Seamus Reed.

Having reacted on pure instinct Max's arms shot out, catching his sisters shoulders he helped her steady herself. He then turned his gaze to Seamus, his eyes burning holes in the poor kid. He stood like that for a few moments, fists and jaw clenched as Seamus and Jane talked. To Max's dismay Seamus was quick to apologize and avoid the full throttle beating that had been coming his way, even worse though was the way his sister genuinely accepted the apology. He didn't know what his sister saw in the guy or his band of freaky friends, because all Max saw in the kid was a possible punching bag and a tuba that desperately begged for a memorable prank.

“And watch where you'r goin next time, Else you'll get worse then a bloody nose.” Max added with a grunt, his voice completely devoid of kindness. He made sure to crack his knuckles for added effect.

The voice seemed to get closer and suddenly they could recognize it as Ellie, "This way, you guys!" she shouted as she burst in the door, over the noise in the hallway. Then, just as quickly as she came, she sprinted out and to the left, out of Brianna and Zach's view.

"Alright, then we'll go." Zach agreed just before... Ellie had appeared? With her disappearance soon afterwards, he took it as a sign they should go too. Whatever that sound was was starting to get creepier and very much closer. "Come on!"

Normally he would be a bit more hesitant to grab a girl's hand but they needed to move, so he took Brianna's and led her out of the room, following where Ellie had suddenly ran off to.

As they entered the hallway, the noises continued but the source had yet to make an appearance. Running towards the left end of the hallway, assuming that was the path taken by Ellie, Brianna and Zach quickly hit a fork in the hallway.

Pinned onto the wall directly in front of them was a school map, but not for the school that they recognized. The hallways, which had always been maze-like, were indecipherable on this map, twisting and turning in a hundred different directions and spreading well beyond the confines of the paper in front of them. In the midst of the swirling chaos of the map were two dark circles drawn thickly around the cafeteria and the library. This cafeteria, a sprawling mass indicated to be about five times as large as the real thing, appeared to be on the left side of the map while the library, a structure that, in this depiction, towered above the others, seemed to be to the right.

Surrounding the map were six lockers, three on each side with each having a name thoroughly scratched out of them. None of the lockers had locks on them, another strange sight in this particular version of the school. The third locker to the left seemed to be slightly open, the door held askew by some unknown bulky item.

Just as suddenly as it had begun, the hurricane of sound came to a halt. The silence weighed on them more heavily than the sound ever could have. Then, over the PA system, they heard Ellie's voice, "Guys, help. I don't know where I am. Um, the door is locked and there aren't any windows in here, I..."

Abruptly, the power went out.

They didn't know why, but for some reason Brianna and Zach knew that they only had a moment to act before they had to leave. In the darkness, it was difficult to see their surroundings, but they could just make out the walls around and in front of them.

Forcing a smile, Seamus laughed, "Oh, yeah, the bloody nose. Actually, funny story, this isn't even from this crash. I accidentally ran into Brianna with my tuba not five minutes ago."

Seeing that this topic of conversation would not be the best appeasement for Max, Seamus decided to drop it and ask, "Hey, uh, would you guys be willing to help me find Ellie real quick, before the five minute bell? Now that I think about it, she probably headed to the student council office thingy that's in the library to get ready for the morning announcements. It won't take like, five minutes and we have plenty of time before..."

And, as he was explaining the bountiful amounts of time they had available to him, the five minute bell decided that it's only purpose today was to prove him wrong. With a sigh Seamus said, "Never mind I guess. It's fine if you guys head to class, I'mma see if I can't find her really quick. Stupid girl is taking up all my time to copy my homework off of everybody else."

What is going on here?

Zach couldn't help but ask himself this as he frantically tried to intake all of the different information that was being thrown at him. The sound, the map, Ellie's voice over the PA. He'd already decided he wasn't dreaming so what happening right now? It was nearly like some sort of movie. All he knew is that he was going to have to gamble right now, whether he liked it or not. He noticed the open locker but what significance would that have on them? Nothing he could think of right now. Right or left, right or left....

....Was there some clue he was missing as to what was going on? Nothing was normal right now. The halls were eerily dark, that noise was nearly suffocating, and his heart was trying to give out on him due to being pumped full of adrenaline. But he had to continue on, didn't he?

Unfortunately, he didn't have much time to dwell on it.

"Uh, ah.... left!" he basically spurted as he headed down what was supposed to be the cafeteria, if the map wasn't lying. This time he simply ran off, hoping that his companion would follow him. Hopefully he could find Ellie....

Max and Jane quickly exchanged glances, that weirdo twin telepathy thing apparently kicking in as the two began laughing at almost the exact same time. It took a moment to regain himself from the laughing fit but when he did he replied to Seamus, his voice dripping with sarcasm "Don't worry Seamus ol buddy." He clapped Seamus, rather roughly, on the shoulder. He acted as if they were old friends or something "We aren't in any rush to get to class. And besides I have some uh...business...waiting in the library."

By "business" he meant the two sophomore's who had texted him on his way in to school, the pair looking to get a hold of a certain illegal green and leafy substance. Max was all to happy to oblige, a quarter ounce size of happiness tucked away in a plastic bag inside the hidden pocket of his leather jacket.

"We'll help you find Ellie. Right sis? I mean, you and Ellie were my main concern today when I came to this fine establishment for eight hours of indoctrination..." He continued to rattle on like a sarcastic ass down as the group headed towards the library. Most of his ramblings would have been humorous were it not for the hidden insults and clear hostility. After a minute or two, and a particularly harsh sideways glance from Jane, and Max begrudgingly yielded.

Shoving his hands into his coat pockets he thought of how much he already desperately wanted a cigarette.

Running through the halls in the general direction that he thought he saw on the map, Zach was beginning to think that this course of action was a big mistake. Another assault began to oppress his hearing with the screech of metal on metal, howling winds bursting past him, and thumping footsteps all around despite there being no one in sight (albeit, he could only see about a foot in any given direction in the pitch darkness).

As he entered the sprawling mass of this worlds cafeteria a female voice that Zach didn't recognize suddenly sounded above the torrent of sound, "Leaving so soon? Didn't find her, did you? He asked one simple thing, to help Him find Her, and you didn't even try. Didn't even make it to the library, disappointing. Jeffery! Be a dear and give him our parting gift, but don't finish him off. I have a feeling like he could be some fun."

Suddenly Jeffery appeared with gashes covering his torso with blood flowing freely from them. With superhuman strength, he slammed Zach's hand down on the table and swung an ax down, cleanly slicing off Zach's pinky and ring fingers. He then took the butt of the ax and smashed it into his forearm with an audible snap.

Over his agony he heard the voice as it said, "By the way, we're keeping the other one with us. Don't worry, we won't kill her, but you won't be seeing her for a while. I'll drop you off in the library so you can finally find Ellie like you were supposed to. Bye bye now. See you again real soon."

Under normal circumstances, Zachary did not normally regret his choice of actions. He oftentimes simply went with the flow and accepted things as-were. But this was not a normal circumstance. This was an irregularity. A differentiation. And among the many things that hurt, he had to say that his fingers (or lack thereof) brought him the most pain and regret.

Keeping a calm mind was extremely difficult at that moment. A simple school student, Zachary had yet to have experienced pain similar to losing a finger, let alone two of them. It hurt. His mind kept repeating this. Pain was the only thing on his mind and because of this he could barely comprehend or care what was being said to him, though he somehow managed to make out that they'd wanted him to find Ellie, even with his missing digits. But how was he supposed to do that when he was probably about to go into shock from the sudden loss? Well, by the sounds of it, he wasn't going to survive if he didn't do it. A missing finger or two would be the least of his worries then.

When he regained his composure, Zach found himself in the library. Also he felt a sharp pain in his arm, now that he thought about it. Perhaps it broke when it was struck. That wasn't really good, was it? Nothing, right now, seemed to be. But still, he could not just sit down and worry about what was and wasn't broken. He could walk, and if he could walk he could find his friend, and perhaps put an end to this strange, strange nightmare he had found himself in. And despite not entirely believing that he would get out of this alive, he would still have to perservere. If even simply for Ellie and Brianna's sake.

The P.A. sounded off with Ellie's voice, "Good morning Chippewa. Today for lunch is pizza, with green beans to the side. And the lunch staff asked me to inform the school that, no, the green beans are not optional. A healthy student is a happy student. Moving on...Oh my God!" Out the window, looking into the library from the P.A. room, Ellie saw bleeding Zachary appear out of nowhere. Without a second thought she sprinted out towards him.

"What happened!? Oh my God, it was a blink wasn't it. I didn't, oh my God I should have told you. It's all my fault, it's all my fault, it's all my fault!"

Then, just as Ellie reached Zachary, Seamus, Max, and Jane entered the library.
