Kota doesn't remember much of her past, but what she does know is that her parents were killed by rogue fire benders.
One night here house was broken into and her parents were killed, she barely escaped with her life and has burn marks on her back, and right fore arm due to the house fire. She made her way from the Fire Nation to her aunt's house in a small village in the Earth Nation.
When she turned twelve her village was attacked and she was the last survivor in her village. She became a rogue and lived off the land and managed to survive because of her aunt's bending sessions with Kota. It's been five years since she started to live by herself and she lives in a small Earth Nation village and is waiting for her time to have a reason to leave this small and decrepid town that is patrolled by Fire benders.
