In fact, he was arrested by the Clock Tower’s Dame Agatha Christie in 2012. After his capture, he was incarcerated for numerous crimes, including theft, attempted murder, and extortion. For all his villainy, he does not think his actions are evil. He simply provides reasons for the suffering that has always existed and will continue to exist regardless of his participation. As someone with a chivalric Ability, he understands that repressed desires scream the loudest. Why deny the human collective of what they want? What they desire, he desires as well. He's a giver, after all, not a taker.
His exploration of duality stems from his time as a law student which made him sensitive to morality's abstract discourse as well as to the reality of its daily use. This fascination continued during his stint in British Parliament, where he became an expert in acting moral and presenting morality. In short, he’s fascinated by the very concepts of right and wrong, and enjoys exploring them. Not once has he considered his morals at odds with one another. To him, good cannot exist without evil, for that is the natural order of things. Non-judgemental and deeply philosophical, he sees heroes in bandits and bandits in kings. The line between heroes and villains is virtually non-existent to Malory, and in his own special way, he sees the best in everyone.
With and without his Ability, he commands a strong following and is never seen alone. If it’s brotherhood one is seeking, Malory will readily provide. He’s a good listener, and a genuinely devoted patriarch to all who need one. For all his treachery, he truly cares for people, and is an excellent keeper of his word. Naturally, Murakami saw in him a powerful ally, and bargained for his release.
Murakami, desperate, originally hired Malory without morals in mind. In spite of all Malory’s questionable inner values, he’s a reliable man of his word. He can be trusted to not self-sabotage, and so long as he has a positive goal to strive for, he will enact good deeds to accomplish them. Malory accepted Murakami’s offer due to the migratory freedom that IQ84 provides. Nowadays, he acts as the organization’s head of recruitment and international affairs. His sole purpose is to be a trustworthy center of power, and a dispenser of rewards and titles.
In the grand scope of things, Malory embraces his "reformation" with great enthusiasm. He sees himself less as a controversial person and more of a conflicted opportunist, or even a victim of fate. He was destined to pull the proverbial sword from the stone, and meant to lead IQ84 through a wounded century. As IQ84’s missionary and co-patriarch, Malory recruits heroes and villains alike. With Sylvia Plath as his blade, and S.E. Hinton as his scabbard, there is no one he can’t persuade.
Now I have warned thee of thy vain glory and of thy pride, that thou hast many times erred against thy Maker. Beware of everlasting pain, for of all earthly knights I have most pity of thee, for I know well thou hast not thy peer on any earthy sinful man.
