As befits the Commander of the Martel, Kodennis's arms and armour are exquisitely made, but functional rather than ornamental. He wears thick plate armour with a high gorget and built-up vambraces and shoulder pieces that he is adept at using as secondary weapons. His pride and joy, however, is the Heart Martel, the 4', 30lb oak-and-iron warhammer that is the seal of office of his rank. As a warrior priest, oiling and otherwise maintaining his arms and armour are the first rituals in each evening meditation. Hanging from his belt is the Script of Love, the holy book of his sect.

Kodennis is cold, strict, and aloof, with little time for those whose goals are not the same as his own, or for those whose methods are different from his own. He believes strength of will and devoutness are one and the same thing, and, as a military man, is happy to leave the political aspect of the Sect of Aera to others. Nonetheless, he takes the sects' sidelining by the outbreak of magic as a personal affront, in line with the sects' shared dogma that magic arose, and has risen again, due to a lack of piety in Byzania.

He has an iron willpower, is unshakable in his focus on a goal, and such determination allows him to stoically endure tiredness and hardship that might dishearten other mortals. Having lived a spartan life, he has little time for luxury, the arts, humour, or emotion. And, having grown up solely amongst men, he considers these fripperies to be the realm of women, who he views as little more than children - vain, untrustworthy, and unserious.

A travelling group of Sect of Aera monks found a four-year-old Kodennis wandering near a destroyed caravan in the foothills of the Southern Mountains. Bandits had ambushed the group and slain or captured every other member. The monks took the boy to Cairn Monastery, where he served in the stables and received general schooling until his teenage years, when he was deemed old enough to enroll as a novitiate of the Sect.

The monks had hoped that the gentle teachings of the Goddess of Love would ease the rage that had festered in the young Kodennis - the orphan boy only ever seemed calm in the saddle or the stable - but instead the message of tolerance, selflessness, and forbearance merely provoked him into open mutiny. His revolt against the very monks who had saved him started out small, but as his stout frame developed, layering muscle upon muscle, stubbornness had evolved into outright hostility, even violent confrontation.

That is when Kodennis learned of the Martel. The Sect of Aera concerns itself with love, marriage, childbirth, the fecundity of the natural world, and good-luck blessings and - so not of the other sects are distracted from this harmonious message by dealing with it themselves - war. The Martel fights so others do not have to so sully themselves, and so men who cannot honour the Goddess Aera with love can at least serve her in their own way. In practice it means that a 300-strong force of elite military talents, complete with cavalry and artillery, is harnessed for the Sect's sole use.

For Kodennis, it meant beating after beating as the trainers molded his raw aggression into a disciplined fighting man. However, it seemed that the more physical punishment he absorbed, the stronger he got. Soon, it became apparent to them that the only way to tame this raw beast was to give him responsibility. Suddenly, the young adult Kodennis had a channel for his anger - not by abusing the men under him, but by driving them into a fervent fury. And suddenly, as if a tap had been turned off, the rage that had driven him appeared extinguished, replaced by a cold, steely facade of almost inhuman willpower. In battle, though, the rage returns, and he fights as ferociously as any of his fanatically devoted men.

The Martel considered it its holy duty to fight alongside the Emperor in his conquest of Byzania, by which time Kodennis had risen to second-in-command. When the commander fell to an arrow in the eye, he took up the mantle unchallenged.
