c a l a m i t y

In the quiet small town of Beaumont Hills, California, an ancient beacon to the Supernatural world has taken root in its heart for thousands of years. Slayers and hunters and druids know this as the Nemeton, and it is just one of many that exist in this world. A long time ago, druids utlized this one lucious tree for ritual, but it was cut down fifty years ago by a family of hunters that still thrive to this very day. It's power wavered, and the lull of the nemeton grew quieter and quieter until the beasts that it had once lured could no longer hear its beckoning song.

It would be a peace that was short-lived, however. Something dangerous has awakened in the heart of Beaumont Hills, and it all started with a high school prank gone wrong. A trip into the woods, some hazing for the new members of the Lacrosse team, and the accidental death of a teammate. His blood seeped into the ground and was funneled to the roots of the powerful nemeton. As it drank from this misfortune, it started to awaken. Its song was but a whisper; drawing in some creatures. It was subtle enough to go unnoticed, but that would soon change.

It is lulling the humans of the town into some sort of unknowing thralldom; like sleepwalking and getting them to aid in its full recovery in all manner of ways. It has grown stronger, its song louder, and its roots begin to spread. The supernaturals are coming in harder and faster than ever, and more malicious as they can't seem to figure out how to leave. They feel chained here, and they have been reduced to their most feral instincts. High school students are going missing and there seem to be more and more animal attacks.

Strange things are afoot, and it will be up to the most unlikely group of teenagers to help stop the nemeton. Of course, they will have to contend with their own prejudices and fears, and tackle the uprooting of everything that they knew to be true.

ImageImageImage Image I. the alpha, AJ
When AJ went to spend the summer before her sophomore year with her estranged grandfather, she wasn't expecting to be introduced to the supernatural, or suddenly become a werewolf. Family secrets came to light of the Bane Pack, a once-prominent, now lost, werewolf pack in California. Her grandfather began to train her, grooming AJ to be the next Alpha to restore the pack. His death was sudden, but as her grandfather's spirit left his body, the Alpha spirit went into her. AJ wants to grant her grandfather's last wish, but dangerous threats and longing for a normal life have kept her from building a pack. The new threat in town may be just the push she needs.

Image Image II. the banshee, sherry
L'appel du vide is a feeling that Sherry knows all too well. Death tempts her both in the literal and metaphorical sense. She doesn't fear it as most do so much as she is acknowledges its role in maintaining balance in the world. To that end, she's something of an enigma in Beaumont Hills: academically admirable but also unnerving in the way that she carries herself. Her distant stare and impeccable timing have led many to believe (at least jokingly) that "everything [she] touches dies". Though she initially wrote off her visions as coincidences, she's beginning to struggle morally with the aftermath of her inaction.

Image Image III. the human, briceson
Brice is just a guy's guy. He loves Lacrosse, but he isn't terribly good at it. It doesn't matter, though. His team loves him. If anything, he's a great source of positivity and cheerleading (he just doesn't fit into the cheerleading outfits. They make his calves look too skinny!). He's cheery, upbeat, fun, and isn't afraid to simply be himself. He's born and raised here in Beaumont, and he doesn't come from a special family. His dad's the local Sheriff in town, and this kid's always in some kind of trouble. What can he say? He just likes to live how he wants to. He doesn't know shit all about the Supernatural stuff in the town, but some of the more suspicious cases have always consumed his attention.

Image Image IV. the werecoyote, riley
Riley has only just moved to Beaumont Hills, California last year, and is a bit of a loner and tries to keep to herself. She was turned only two years ago, still struggling with the fact that she was turned, she and her older sister decided on moving halfway across the country as a way to escape and try to blend in a new town with new people. She is now in her senior year of high school in Beaumont Hills, and is still trying to come to terms with who or more precisely what she is now, as she is still rather new to the whole supernatural thing.

Image Image V. the kitsune, hiroto
Naozuka is a thousand-year-old kitsune who takes on a human appearance of a 19-year-old Japanese boy. He was among one of the most well-respected members of his kind, being one of the extremely few who had managed to grow and nurture nearly nine tails. Yet, during an unfortunate encounter with a band of Hunters, he lost half the number of his tails. After exacting his vengeance, feeling too shameful to remain in his realm, he left his home country to travel aimlessly around the world, until he came across the town of Beaumont. Hoping to find a way to utilize the miraculous nemeton to regain his lost tails, Naozuka adopted the identity of a senior high school student named Hiroto Naozaki and began his new life.

Image
Image Image VI. the druid, jasper
Listen—it's not like Jasper asked to be born a Godfrey so he could be an emissary to supernatural beings, alright? Nobody ever asked him what he thought of having to deal with were-whatevers and their host of problems. At least his brother Enzo was lucky enough to be terrible at this whole druid business and shipped off to the Navy before their mother could figure out another way for him to be tangled up in the supernatural. Too bad Jasper's a natural learner and picked up his mother's skills quickly, and now she's pressuring him to find a pack and "settle down", like he's getting married. He's still hopeful that there's a chance he can go away to college and avoid this whole business, but with all the happenings in Beaumont Hills it's beginning to seem like an impossibility..

Image Image VII. the kanima, tommy
Never in one place for too long, Tommy has in been in and out of foster care for as long as he can remember. With no memories before the age of seven, Tommy doesn't know who he is or where he comes from. He's been in Beaumont Hills for a few weeks, drawn to the town when asked where he wanted to live. His kanima side is currently under his control, but who knows what secrets Beaumont Hills will bring up.

Image Image VIII. the hunter, reagan
Reagan Venandi, of whose last name translates into 'Hunter,' has lived in Beaumont all her life. She was an average girl that shuffled quietly from class to class without notice until a series of unexplainable deaths and events led her down a strange path. After the death of her father at the beginning of her junior year, her mother introduced her to the supernatural world and trained her to uphold their family duty. Now she's a senior with a vengeance and deadly aim.

We, of course, observe all the classical rules of roleplay - no godmodding, metagaming, and all of those things that we all know that we shouldn't do in roleplay. Please don't control other people's characters without acquiring their consent first. There is a very strong preference for experienced and literate writers, so keep that in mind when applying. Since our cast is so small, and we won't be adding anymore characters, everyone should be relatively close-knit. We are aiming for a strong character-driven story that will be enhanced by committed writers building strong relationships. Speaking of commitment, one post a week is preferred and doable. Two weeks is a good max, and anything past that will result in a PM inquiring into the absence. We are all very patient, but also very eager Rpers. This will be a mature roleplay for blood, guts, violence, sex, drugs, alcohol - whatever. But keep within the site rules, which means sex fades to black or goes offsite.

If you'd like to reserve a character, the code to do so will be right here! Please provide a 250x250 gif. If you can't find one, I will find one for you. Please replace the hexa/hexa with your speech color!

After you are reserved, you will be asked to submit a WIP within 48 hours. This can be a blank CS sheet. After that, you will have up to two weeks to complete it! I will provide a CS sheet for you, but please use whatever you'd like!

Take a moment to read the original Havoc RP. It is only a few posts, and everything will be taking place the day after all of that happened. For replacement characters, we can easily fit them into the story and figure it all out!

The night had gone by, perhaps more slowly than it had come. Reagan could not remember if she had successfully closed her eyes or not, or if she was maybe sleeping wide awake in some crazy nightmare scene. A lot of things have been brought to a new and uncomfortable light - she may have seen the Alpha for who he was as a human, and she now had undeniable proof that Riley was something else entirely. The greatest confusion comes, not for seeing them for what they were when the moon rises and the night takes them over, but in knowing that they weren't bad people. Her mother always said that these monsters were so because they were also monsters in their mortal lives.

But that seemed untrue.

She's also pissed at Brook - so pissed that she can't fathom seeing his face without also watching as her palm uncontrollably connects with his overly handsome face. She doesn't know what happened to him or where he went, either, and he let her worry like that. It almost made her sick to her stomach. He's such an asshole.

What was she supposed to do, though? Armed with all of this information, does she just go out into the light of day and roam the school like nothing ever happened? Was Riley going to be scared of her now? Most of all - was there something for her to be scared of? Maybe there was. Maybe there wasn't. She didn't quite know right now.

The first rays of a Saturday morning sunrise peek through the curtains, and Reagan finally rolls herself out of bed. After a very slow shower, if one could call it a shower and not contemplating in a sauna, she tugged on a pair of bright pink leggings, a sports bra, and some running shoes. There are a lot of things to do right now - errands to run. She had to go to the store, maybe get through a workout at the gym, go for a run, take a look over the armory, avoid people if that was possible. Her mother was far too busy with hunter stuff to deal with her today, and Reagan was fine with that.

She spent most of the morning to the early afternoon by herself, but that was just her life.

By the time the late afternoon rolled about, around three pm or so (she wasn't keeping track), she had accomplished all of her tasks and slipped into a t-shirt sans bra, jeans, and some white flats. She didn't look her best - a face without much makeup save for brows and a spot of mascara, a light dusting of pink for her lips. Her hair was obviously towel-dried and laid a bit messily, and the dark circles under her eyes accented her just rolled out of bed look.

She dipped out of the house and strolled down the streets of the town, which are always busy at this time of day. Children were with their parents at the park, families roamed hand-in-hand to this shop or that. It was just small-town America doing what it does best. The only thing that separated it from the rest was that the residents seem to always be a little more alert, but not for all the reasons you might think.

There was police activity at the school; an active crime scene since the Chimera Amanda chomped a boy to death. The Sheriff was there along with other authority figures; many of which operated under the long lineage of hunters and or other Supernaturals since the town's conception. While the Sheriff was not in the know of all the Supernatural stuff, his concern for a death in a town like this was not at all surprising - he was very much on the alert. This place hasn't seen a ton of murders for a long time, just the every now and again tragic accident; like the one that had awoken the Nemeton. That was ruled as an accident, and it was case closed.

This, though, was different. Reagan stood back behind one of the buses; a palm placed on the yellow surface as she peeked around its back corner. They even called in animal control. Everyone who was anyone was here, and that included friends of her mother that operated as a deputy or two and even the principal. The crime scene tape was stretched across the doors of the Beaumont High, and parents were going to get the call that school would be canceled for Monday.

She turned around and placed her back against the bus, looking up at the clear blue skies. She pushed herself away and started to walk in the other direction, making a mental note to grab a friend and come by the school later. Maybe Brook, after she's done giving him a piece of her mind.

Darkness. Darkness and a sense of emptiness were the only thing that could be felt. It didn't matter where one looked around, an empty void was the only thing to be seen for what seemed to stretch on forever in every direction. Everything was silent, eerily so. As if a pin dropped on could easily hear it in the emptiness that was their mind. In the middle of the darkness, stood a figure. Small. Helpless. Confused. Scared. Empty. That was the only thing Riley had felt for the past two years. Nothing made sense, and anything that did never lasted long. Everything was just a never-ending whirlwind of emotion, and Riley didn't know how to cope. Especially after the attack. Now she found herself in the same old empty void that she found herself in every time she closed her eyes. And the same old thing would repeat itself. The sense of being watched from the encroaching darkness. The feeling of dread. The feeling of ice-cold, dead hands wrapping and ensnaring themselves around her until her eyes would jolt open and she'd find herself in all too familiar surroundings.

She simply laid there in silence as her heart raced in her chest as reality slowly set in. She was safe, and she was at home. She was okay, and those events from the previous night were over. They still happened, but they were over. And there was nothing she could do to change that. Slowly she found herself sitting up in bed, combing her fingers through her mess of hair, trying to not let all of the reality hit her. People saw her, at least two did and she wasn't entirely sure if she could trust them knowing the truth. Thomas, he was, whatever he was, so maybe he could be trusted. Especially as he didn't seem to want to hurt anyone, and seemed to be running away, not to something. Then there was her only possible real threat. Venandi. She knew there was something off about her right away when they first met. Just something felt off, like some of the others. But with Reagan, it was something else. Not something supernatural, but natural. And that is what scared her. She knew Hunters existed, her own father was one, but she hadn't met many other Hunters, until now. And now, if she was correct, her classmate was one of them. Which was absolutely perfect. The last thing she needed was someone hunting her down, at least, that's what she would have expected. But something felt different about Reagan, and Riley wasn't exactly sure what it was. She could ponder on that later.

Now, now she just needed to get ready and carry on with things. She'd try to blend in with others again, but if anything else went wrong, she'd have to tell her sister and they'd have to leave again. Which is the exact opposite of what she wanted. They just started to feel like they had a normal life again, and everything started to feel somewhat normal. Sure, going to school as an undercover monster wasn't easy, but she made it work so far. And then that damn dance had to happen and ruin everything. Riley knew she'd regret going, but not for what reason, and now she knew. But perhaps it was for the best that she went, otherwise....Who knows what would have happened. That damn monster could have killed more than it had, and it would have been a slaughter. Not like Riley was of much help, but she did do something, and that had made her feel slightly better about the whole thing. After a long and hot shower, she found herself getting dressed and having a short and silent breakfast as Ellen had gone to work. The house always felt empty and quiet, but with the past recent events it felt even more so, and Riley needed to get out of the house. Just, go somewhere that wasn't here.

She wasn't entirely sure where she was going, but all she knew was that she was going to let her feet take her wherever they wanted. What was the worst that could happen, aside from being a freak already? Riley simply found her feet taking her wherever they wanted, as she was in her head as leaves crunched under her feet as her shoes scraped against the asphalt beneath her feet. She didn't know where she was going, all she cared about was going somewhere that wasn't home. She hated being in that house by herself, something just didn't feel right being there alone. Riley hadn't noticed it as she was far too deep in her own thoughts, but when she finally looked up, she realized where she had wandered off too. Of course, out of all places she'd wind up, it was here. The all too recognizable yellow tape surrounded the perimeter of the grounds. Cars and emergency vehicles were still parked out front as multiple officers were stationed outside. It was safe to say that the school would be canceled on Monday. Riley felt that familiar tingle on the back of her neck as she stood outside of the property of the school, her green eyes examining everything, taking in what was going on before she picked up a scent. One that had become all too familiar within in the past twenty-four hours. She didn't know how her senses were so muddled until now. But thankfully it was only one person, that she could somewhat trust. Maybe. Riley still wasn't sure where that person stood, and if she could be trusted.

The young Werecoyote found herself taking a deep breath as she slowly approached the woman behind the bus. Her hands were raised in an unthreatening manner, the last thing she'd want to do is spook someone she assumed was a Hunter, especially if she had a weapon on her. "It-it's just me." she stuttered out as she found herself stepping on a small branch, alerting the human to her presence. That was fantastic. The last thing she needed was scaring Reagan before she was able to make her presence known if Reagan didn't already feel it. "Look, I should have told you before last night. And I'm sorry you had to find out like that but...I promise, like I said last night, I wasn't going to hurt you or anyone." she said as she avoided any and all eye-contact now. Only taking small glimpses at her when Riley felt confident enough to look her in the eyes. "If you don't trust me anymore, I understand. I just don't want you to feel like you have to be scared of me." she said with a small smile, "I already am enough, don't think there has to someone else that's scared of me." Riley said with an awkward chuckle, poking at the leaves beneath her feet with the tip of her shoe. She could feel how stupid this all was, and that it would probably only make things worse. Riley began to turn to walk away, but before she went to leave she gave Reagan one final word, "There's scarier things here in Beaumont than people like me...Like, whatever that was last night...I doubt you even know what it was. Just, be careful, alright? I know you can take care of yourself, I'd just feel better knowing you were okay." she hoped her last bit of advice wasn't as ominous as it may have come across as.

The night was young, and student after student - anyone who was anyone - poured into the home of Kenneth Myers, one of Beaumont Hills' most popular kids from an extremely influencial family. That family, of whom most were out of town. Hence, tonight - a reckless party with music that thumped so loudly it drowned the cacophony of teenage fun for blocks. Not that they lived near anyone, anyhow. The mansion, complete with all the luxuries of a more than well-off family, sat atop the gentle green peak of the only hill in this small town. It was a private place, and it required driving to get to. Students carpooled with friends and hitched rides if they did not have one themselves.

Kenneth wasn't there to greet everyone that came in. He wasn't exactly the host of the year, much less even good human of the year. The senior was a huge asshole, but he felt entitled to it. He has been the Captain of the Lacrosse team for a long time, and this was the year that they will finally make it to compete at the state level. Everyone would be leaving for San Diego on Monday, followed by their little fan club. His parents didn't care, though, as they are a largely absent part of his life. Rather than help celebrate his success, they took their trip to Europe and left him to his own devices.

Reagan hadn't been to a party in quite a while. She has been carefully avoiding conversations with others, immersed in trying to pass high school. It was lucky for her that the principal allowed her to continue to her Senior year despite missing almost four months at the beginning of last year. She had her GPA and great work ethic to thank for the mercy of being able to graduate on time with her friends. Still, it felt weird to her to... celebrate anything. Yes, she was more than happy for their team. They have a chance to take the state and even go to nationals. They would make it there. Why wouldn't she be eager to applaud them? Tommy was part of that, and she's good friends with him. He had been a huge part of it, too.

On the outside, Reagan had changed dramatically. The young hunter's introduction into her dark family legacy and the supernatural world of Beaumont Hills had instilled more confidence and a better sense of self. However, it left a lot of things unanswered - the Alpha that had killed her father. He was dead, of course. Was he the last one? She was being plagued by nightmares that led to doubt. This new life opened her eyes, and it was hard to see the ugly truth of the world that she was now part of. Beneath the veil of normalcy, there is wicked darkness lurking among them. Acting like them. Even worse, looking like them. Monsters. Fiends. Things that preyed upon humans and soaked the history of this town richly in blood. She didn't know who to trust anymore, but... monsters couldn't be high schoolers, so she felt fine with her friends.

The mansion was utter chaos, as one would suspect. It almost seemed like the whole high school student body was fit into the space. It smelled like booze, sweaty teenage bodies, and weed. There was a whole lot of alcohol and weed. She put her best confident face on, brushed her hands over her dress to smooth it out, and click-clacked her way to the open entrance in her very uncomfortable red heels. She had left most of her things in the car, leaving her only with a small purse that clung to her shoulder and held mostly just a set of keys. Nothing bad would happen here. Nothing supernatural anyway.

Kenneth approached her quickly, and boy - he was a handsy guy. Reagan tried her best not to be rude about having to pry one of his hands off of her waist, but she didn't like him. At all. "Oh, Kenneth. Hi. Um, have you seen Tommy around? Is he here yet?" As she worked to get his roaming, drunk fingers away she snatched a peek over his shoulder to scan the room.

Whatever he said, she didn't catch it. Honestly, it sounded like incoherent mumbling or something slurred. In fact, he wasn't paying attention to her anymore because one of the cheerleaders walked past him. He unabashedly checked her out and immediately forgot that Reagan was even a person he was just talking to.

"Ugh, pig," she grumbled before squeezing her way past people in the foyer, then the living room, and ultimately outside where the air was freshest. During her walk outside, someone handed her a plastic red cup filled with an unknown clear substance. She drank it anyway, because like all teenagers - she thought she was immune and that date drugs were not real life. Nothing like that could happen to her. Then she disappeared into the crowd dancing near the pool and thought that she might as well as dance her night away. Being one of the school's popular girls, she melted seamlessly into the crowd.

"You ready, Ry?" a voice came from behind the other side of the door of Riley's room. Silence filled the room for a few moments until the door opened to reveal the face of Riley, who had a rather unamused and annoyed look on her face. "Does it look like I'm ready for this?" she questioned as she was still in her normal clothing, which was black sweatpants, a plain graphic t-shirt, and a baggy zip-up hoodie. One of her classmates was throwing another big party, and most of the school was going, but it was something Riley hadn't been anticipating or really wanting to attend. Especially with her being an introvert on top of not wanting to go out and be by herself surrounded by people that properly knew each other and were friends or were in relationships. She'd feel out of place and wouldn't want to be around people like that longer than she'd really have to.

"Why aren't you ready yet? You have to be there in ten minutes!" her older sister exclaimed as she walked over to the closet and looked through the clothes, trying to find something last minute that she could wear. "Ready for what? A high school party full of horny teens that will be getting drunk and more than likely hooking up after or even at the party? I'd rather not be the only one standing out and feeling awkward the whole time, El. Besides, I don't think mixing me in with hormones and alcohol is a good idea." she retorted as she sat on the bed, looking at her sister who was still looking through the closet for something, anything at this point. "I got it!" Ellen exclaimed as she pulled out a flannel, and pants from the closet, holding them up to her. "You really want me to go dressed like that?" Riley questioned, as Ellen had been recently trying to get her to wear dresses or something more feminine for the past three weeks for this. Something that Riley had been entirely against up until this point.

Ellen turned back and looked at her after setting the clothes on the bed, arms crossed as she looked at Riley, "Well if you didn't delay this for so long as well as put down every other outfit I suggested, you would have had something much nicer than this. But it'll have to do. Hurry up and get dressed and ready, you have like five minutes now or you'll be late. Well, later than you already are." Ellen insisted as she pushed the clothing into Riley's arms and pushed her into the bathroom to change and get ready. A few short minutes later, Riley exited the bathroom, dressed in the outfit Ellen picked out, with a rather neutral expression, "Do I really have to go to this thing? No one would even notice I wasn't there, nor would anyone be saddened by it, El. I'm not exactly Miss Popular." she insisted, simply trying to weasel her way out of going. It was true though, she didn't really have many friends, if any really, and she didn't think they'd even notice if she didn't show up to it, as she was rather new in comparison and a loner for the most part.

Riley had attended a few festivities that the school put on since she first attended the school the year prior, as well as a few house parties, but she hadn't really had any fun or even felt like she belonged there. Things just, never felt right since two years ago. Ellen simply nodded and gave her a kiss on the forehead and a gentle hug, "You'll have fun, you deserve to go out and be a normal kid.." she said softly as she stood back and looked at her sister with a small smile, Riley only sighed as she gathered her things, "Kind of hard to be normal when you're me and you can turn into a fucking monster...But I'll try to have a good time, just don't be surprised if I come back early.." she muttered as she walked passed her sister and out of her room, grabbing her keys and other things as she made her way out of the house. They lived in the northern side of town, far away from people and the more populated part of town, towards the forest and woods, as a way of keeping them out of the public eye, as well as Ellen having a good amount of money to get a nice place as they had. It was a score of a house and was easily affordable for her as she had a good job and they managed to get it for a good price. Riley had finally made it to the address she was given days prior, and by the time she checked her watch she was very late, easily about half an hour late to be exact. That's one way to make a grand entrance, being extraordinarily late, way to go, Riles, she thought to herself.

The home was a lot larger than she had expected, and to be honest, it only made things worse as she felt even more out of place than she would have felt otherwise. Riley slowly walked up to the all too large house, which had already audible music coming from inside, she knocked at first and awaited an answer. She began to place her hand on the doorknob to open it when the door flung open, almost knocking her off her feet, "Oh shit! That's my bad-Oh hey, you're the new girl, right? Riley? Or something like that?" the boy slurred, clearly far too drunk already. Riley gave him a fake smile as she dusted herself off as well as giving a small nod, "Yeah, hey Kenneth. Sorry I'm late. It uh, took me a bit longer than expected to get here." she said with a small smile. Kenneth gave her all too large of a grin as he took another sip from the red funnel cup in his hand, motioning her inside the house, placing his hand along her waist as he did so. "We're all friends here, Rile. Welcome on in. You're looking-Well, good." the smell of alcohol dripped off of him like poison, almost overbearingly so to the werecoyote.

Riley gave him a small awkward chuckle and stepped passed him, exchanging some not very interesting small talk before he buggered off and went to chat someone else up. She slowly made her way through the home, taking in everything as well as she could. Best to familiarize yourself with the area around you, even if nothing bad happened, it was best to know where everything was. Just to be on the safe side.

Riley initially planned to stay indoors for at least some time, but after being in there for several minutes, with overly loud music, too many people for her taste, and the overbearing scent of sweat and alcohol, her senses were pushed into overdrive. Her heart began racing, her mind was overcrowded with thoughts, and her anxiety began to slowly rise. Riley found herself stepping backward and into the outdoor patio, where less people were. Smaller groups tended to stay outdoors compared to inside, for some odd reason. The werecoyote found herself gripping onto one of the railings next to the small botanical garden to the side, her eyes fluctuated from her normal dark hazel to a dark yellow, and then back to her natural color as she held her head. She could feel herself slowly growing dizzy and sat down on one of the benches, holding her head as she continued to stare down at the floor. A figure slowly approached her, but Riley didn't pay her much attention, simply being asked something that she didn't quiet understand but assumed she was asked if she was okay. The girl wandered off, and shortly came back with a red plastic cup, forcing it into Riley's hands and saying she'd feel better after she drank some. Riley quirked an eyebrow for a moment, eyeing the light golden liquid in the cup. She knew full well what it was, looking back up at the girl, who only gave her a small smirk and wink, raising the plastic cup and downed her drink before turning away and left Riley to herself. "Fuck it.." she mumbled, quickly downing the alcohol in one go, the burn took over for a moment as she coughed heavily. She had never had any form of alcohol before and wasn't expecting to find god damn straight whiskey in a funnel cup, so she just silently sat there on the bench, alone to her thoughts as she tried to calm herself down, if she could.

A car honked its horn outside Jasper Godfrey's house, and he startled awake, almost falling off his bed where he had been sitting, dozing over his laptop. He leaned out of his bedroom window, spotting a car idling on the curb while one of the boys in the car waved at him. Jacob Something-or-Other, Jasper couldn't be bothered to remember everyone's names some days. "Be right down!" Jasper called at the group. He waved back, then ducked back into his room, looking down at himself—his current shirt and jeans looked presentable enough. He grabbed a jacket from where it was lying at the foot of his bed, ran his hands through his hair, and hurried downstairs.

"Whoa, whoa, hey. Where are you going?" Serena Godfrey stood at the foot of the stairs, arms crossed and eyebrows raised.

"Um. A party. My friends are outside. I'm sorry I forgot to tell you. Can I go? Please?" The words came tumbling out of Jasper's mouth as he remembered that he'd neglected to tell his parents. This was it, she'd definitely say no and he'd have to go outside and shamefully tell his friends that he couldn't go after all.

Serena surveyed him carefully, and then she gave a reply that he hadn't expected, "Yeah, okay. Don't be back too late." Jasper stayed where he was, gawking as his mother turned away and headed into the kitchen. "Before I change my mind!"

That got him moving. Checking his pockets to make sure he had his wallet and phone, Jasper hurried to put his sneakers on, yelling back, "Thanks, Mom!" before opening the door and scrambling outside. The car's horn sounded again just as Jasper yanked the front door open, laughing as he piled into the car with the other three boys who were already inside. "Hey, thanks for picking me up," he said gratefully, knowing that it would have been pretty hard to get up to Kenneth Myers's place otherwise.

Soon enough the car was pulling up near the Myers house, and Jasper squeezed through the front door to find himself in a house already packed with partying teenagers. Kenneth Myers himself was lingering in the general area near the door, and caught Jasper's eyes immediately. He was perhaps more than just a little drunk, but that was understandable. "Oh, hey—Godfrey! Good to see you, dude. Make yourself comfortable." He swept an arm out, pointing in the direction of the kitchen where the alcohol was no doubt pouring freely. "Good to be here!" Jasper managed to call back, before the movement of the crowd forced him along, thankfully in the direction of the kitchen.

The nice thing about being moderately popular was that most people knew Jasper, but not enough to commit him too much to their personal lives. In the kitchen, someone handed him a solo cup of spiked punch, and someone else tried to start a conversation with Jasper about that last lacrosse match. He laughed and drank and chatted, letting himself be caught up in the flow of the party.

At some point while his cup was being refilled for the second time, a side door he hadn't even noticed opened and a gang of girls poured into the room from outside. Between the sudden barrage of voices and the two drinks he'd had, the outside air suddenly seemed really appealing. Grabbing his cup back with a grateful smile, Jasper ducked out of the door before he got sucked back into the crowd inside the house.

Outside wasn't much better; people were still mingling in large groups and there seemed to be an impromptu dance floor by the pool. Still, the night air made it that much cooler than inside, and Jasper lingered near the gaggle of dancing people, taking a moment to soak up the atmosphere.

Someone bumped into him from behind, and he lurched forward, in turn bumping into one of the girls dancing near him. He managed to keep his drink staying relatively upright, but a few drops leaped out of the cup and onto the girl's dress. "I'm so sorry, I swear that was an accident, can I go inside and get you some napkins for that?" he offered, horrified. He looked up, making eye contact with her for the first time, and realised he was talking to Reagan Venandi. "Reagan! I didn't expect to see you here," he blurted, surprised. He'd never really known her to be the social type, even after her reported personality change when she returned from her long absence. "I'm really sorry about the drink, is your dress okay?"
