"I wouldn't say it was boring...I'm sure there are people who are enjoying it, it's just not really...my taste..." Raven answered her husband quietly with her shy smile, rising from her seat at the table. She wondered if they'd be alone together once they were inside, or if there would still be crowds but just in a more confined space, or even if they were going to be sent to their rooms...And if it were the latter, would Decker come at any point during the night to consummate his marriage with his new brides? She felt sick at the thought. She knew he said he hadn't wanted to pressure any of them into doing anything they didn't want to, but would his attitude be any different once the time actually came? She shook the thought from her mind, knowing it would only scare her, and smiled once again up at Decker.

Giving a small, gracious curtsey towards Decker and his sister wives, Valentina smiled.
"You women really do look stunning tonight." She remarked, flashing a warm smile at Raven, Shelby and Lacey in turn, then turned slightly and walked towards the end of the garden, which was completely empty at that moment in time.

Raven stepped away from the table as Decker gave his speech to the guests, keeping her head down and just hoping that everyone's eyes were on her husband instead of her. But who was she kidding? As charming and well-spoken as Decker was, people couldn't help giving in to their curiosity about his wives. The very least she could hope for was that most of their eyes were on Decker.
When he asked Lacey to leave, her head lifted quickly to look at them both. The pattern seemed to form now where every time the blush in her cheeks had receded slightly, something happened which caused it to return even redder and burn even hotter than before. What could he possibly have to say to her that he couldn't say in front of her sister wife? Or perhaps it was what he wanted to do...
The possibilities that swam around in her head were disturbing and terrifying, so she instead forced herself to consider that, no matter how small the chance might be, maybe he wanted to talk alone because she was the one he was falling for. This calmed her terror slightly, but not the erratic beating of her heart.

The feel of Decker's hand on hers sent little sparks of electricity though her skin, up her arms and finished at her heart, quickening its beating so much she heard it in her ears and felt it at the back of her throat. She gulped it back, feeling her cheeks burning as she looked up at her husband.
There he went again, saying he was nothing like his father...She had no idea who his father even was. She didn't know who Decker was, either, until she saw him at that altar. Governors, to her - before she was taken here - were just nameless, faceless aristocracy she sometimes saw on television when the public events were broadcasted for all the world to see. Parading their beautiful wives with sad eyes around on their arms. She'd thought they were monsters, those Governors, but what those television programs seemed to fail to air was the Governors like Decker.
Finally, she broke herself out of her mind again to answer:
"N-nothing's troubling me, exactly..." she said quietly, stuttering nervously at the beginning of her sentence. That was a lie. There was a lot troubling her. This marriage, the night that followed it, the life that followed it...But she couldn't tell Decker about any of this. "I just, take a little bit of time to warm up to people..." Not a lie.

Raven looked up at Decker at his comment about her smile, meeting his eyes. Her heart fluttered and said smile widened, reaching up to her eyes and making them glitter in the evening light, adding to the vibrancy of the blue. Her heart sank, however, when he released her hands and dismissed her. Despite all of her previous thoughts that night, she wanted to stay in her husband's company. She wouldn't persist, though, and instead she gave a small nod and let her eyes drift down from his, before turning away.
As an afterthought, she asked:
"Decker?" Her voice was barely above the soft whisper it was the first time she'd spoken to him. "Is this the last time I'll be seeing you tonight?" She didn't know if he'd take it as if he'd see her later at the party, or later in her bedroom and honestly, she wasn't exactly sure which way she meant it either - one, she would be excited for, the other she'd dread...But she needed to know, so she could at least be prepared for the events of the night to come.

Raven turned back to Decker, that brightness lighting up her eyes again.
"Then, yes. I'd like to stay with you..." she told him with her soft, quiet voice with a smile at her lips. "After all...The more time I spend with you, the less time it'll take for me to become comfortable with you, right?" It was also the fact that the more time she spent alone with him, the less time he spent possibly falling for the other girls. The selfishness of that thought shocked Raven, and once it had made its way into her head, she found herself trying to justify it. She still clung onto the fantasy that there was one other person in the world she would be as perfect for as he'd be for her, who'd love her and protect her and make her feel special, and maybe...Just maybe Decker hadn't actually stolen that possibility from her. Maybe this entire ordeal was a blessing in disguise and Decker was that man...But he couldn't be, if he was dividing that love between her and three other women...And, from what she could tell, Shelby didn't want to be his wife. She didn't want to love him, and Lacey...Lacey was just a little girl who probably didn't understand the full meaning of love, and Decker didn't seem at all interested in entering into that kind of romantic relationship with her. That just left Valentina...She had no idea what Valentina's feelings were, or Decker's. But she couldn't possibly be that desperate for that kind of affection, could she? With that beauty, that confidence, that grace...She'd probably had plenty of men's attention before she was taken, whereas Raven had never had any...
No matter how much she justified that thought, no matter how logical her argument, she still felt that pang of guilt in her chest...But she brushed that feeling off to the side to dwell on later, and focused her attention - and her smile - back on her husband.

Raven took Decker's arm, clinging to him tightly, and looked up at him with a smile.
"Well seeing as you're the master of this house, I think you should decide..." she answered. She really had no idea what there was to do in this place, apart from talk, and it didn't take much to deduce she wasn't much of a talker unless she was strongly directed with specific questions. And as for anything else they could do, she'd only seen two places in this house: her bedroom on the second floor, where she was prepared before the ceremony, and this rose garden. Needless to say, there weren't many options.

"I do love to read, but that's only in my spare time...It's hardly appropriate when I'm trying to spend time with my husband," Raven answered with a smile, the pink in her cheeks deepening again. It was the first time she'd referred to him as her husband out loud, and saying the word suddenly made all of this real. It hit her hard - that realization - and suddenly the ring on her finger burned onto her skin and tightened around her fragile bone, she kept her head down when she spoke next, still maintaining her smile. "And if all we're doing is walking, you'll probably just get bored of me..." her voice started off shaky, still processing the abrupt reality of her situation, but became steady by the end of her sentence. "Maybe we could just sit down and talk? I'm not sure what about, though..."

Raven froze, absolutely mesmerized by his eyes and the way he leaned down towards her. Her heart stopped dead in her chest - or at least, that's what it felt like - when their lips were just a breath apart. This is it. The first ever kiss. She stood there, looking up at him, unblinking, waiting for the contact...But it never came. It took a few seconds for Raven to break herself out of her daze, and when she did, the pounding of her heart resumed full-force and her cheeks were on fire.
The smile returned to her face, albeit a little shaky, and she sat down in the chair across from Decker, giving him a small nod.
"So what should we talk about?" she asked, attempting to hide the little tremors in her voice from what had just happened.

"U-um...Well...I don't really have any specific favourite books, but...I guess, the kind I like the most are...Romance novels...With a little bit of adventure in them that just, y'know, keep you on the edge of your seat and take you to another world...And, I like it when they're set in the past, before the sickness...Because...It kind of gives me hope, that...If the world was like that once, maybe it could be that way again..." Raven answered, the shakiness of her voice and the racing of her heart calming down a bit towards the end, and her eyes taking on a faraway, dream-like gleam. She paused for a moment, then dropped her gaze to the blades of grass which swayed slightly in the light nighttime breeze. "That's stupid, isn't it?"

"No, I've not read that one..." Raven said, looking up to her husband's excited face with her own smile widening slightly. That excitement was contagious. "But maybe that's the first one I'll read when I get some time to myself." If she was honest, the title didn't interest her that much. If it was referencing the planet, she doubted the content of the book would interest her much either. She'd never been one to be into space-themed stories, but seeing that joy when Decker spoke about it, she could at least give it a try, couldn't she? And what was that old expression the first generations used? Don't judge a book by its cover...This seemed to apply to a lot these days.

When she'd travelled far enough down to the end of the garden, Valentina looked back towards the door leading inside, a small, smug smile on her face when she laid eyes on Raven and Decker.
One thing Valentina hadn't wanted was to be First Wife. And that was her primary worry when she had seen the rest of Governor Delaney's wives...one who wouldn't say a word for her shyness, one who was merely a little girl, and one who couldn't have hated him more if she'd tried. And her attitude for the wedding day had been simple: be sweet, charming and act like you were settling in. Her game plan for any time after that was also simple: keep to herself, do what she had to do, and try to get through this in her own little way. But again, after seeing the brides at the table, she had been completely terrified that Decker would begin to show any affection for her. Which, judging by the way he had been looking at her at the table, she needed to stop before it went any further. And so she had excused herself.
But, seeing how Decker and the little shy bride were hitting it off in her absence, that didn't look like a worry for her anymore. And, with regards to genuine love and affection...it looked like Raven would be recieving the most of it. Which wasn't something that bothered Valentina at all.
She couldn't promise herself that when it came to the bearing of children, the same would apply, and although that scared her slightly, she knew she'd probably just have to accept it. Lacey was too young, and Shelby just wouldn't co-operate. And although neither of them payed a lot of attention to her, she still valued them as family in a way and would do what she had to to keep them safe and unharmed. Not that she suspected Decker would ever bring harm to them, but...it was just a precaution.
With Raven, she wanted to be more of a friend, than a family member. Which would make this whole situation kind of complicated...something she wasn't looking forward to at all.
Raven seemed already smitten with Decker, and...could two friends really share a husband? Without it feeling like a competition? Maybe not on Valentina's part, but...if Raven really loved him, then...would she not grow to resent her?
And if Valentina found that she did have to bear Decker's children at some point, would Raven hate her for it? Would she mind? And how would he feel about all of this?
So many questions she found herself asking, and the more and more she thought, the more questions joined them...along with the steady decrease of her smile until it was completely faded and replaced with a confused frown. She had no idea what to do, or how to make any of this work. It was all just so complicated...
Taking another sip from her glass of champagne, and sighing as she looked down at the rose in her other hand, Valentina found that the horrible reality of the situation was just beginning to sink it. And it wasn't pretty.

Lacey let out a sigh of relief, as the panic seemed to leave her body. She blushed a little as he kissed the top of her head, and any sign of unhappiness left her eyes. He asked her to smile, and Lacey's seemingly trademark smile reappeared on her face. She giggled softly and grinned up at Decker.

Raven watched Decker go, the smile dropping from her face and the gleam leaving her eyes. She wanted him to stay...She wanted to be his first priority, and seeing that Lacey had taken him away from her, she felt a little irritation towards the small blonde. She looked down, as that irritation was once more replaced with guilt. Lacey hadn't done anything wrong...And neither had Decker...This whole arrangement had just started to make her selfish. She knew she'd have to get over that, fast. It was just a fact she'd have to deal with that these girls she was living with now were just as much Decker's wives as she was, but her heart still sunk in her chest whenever his attention was taken away from her.

Valentina blinked, her earlier thoughts disappearing when she heard Decker, and she quickly turned to face him, almost dropping her glass as she did so.
"Oh...me? I'm fine. Great, even. Yes, I'm super. But, y'know, you should really get back to Raven, Governor Delaney. Honestly. You two seemed to be enjoying eachother's company, and the last thing I want to do is interrupt." She spoke quickly, watching Raven out of the corner of her eye whilst trying not to make it obvious. She was lying about being fine, but...that was beside the point. She was just confused, more than anything...a little bit troubled, but she wasn't going to tell him that. So instead, she gave him a small smile and glanced around her. "I'm just enjoying the beautiful views, really...the sickness I was feeling's gone...it must have just been a phase. All of this...becoming a wife, moving into a new home, a wedding, having people constantly want to talk to you...marriage consummation and having to start preparing yourself for having children...all of that can really go to a girl's head. I'm sure it'll just come and go...but right now, I feel fine. Don't worry about me." She gave a small laugh, glancing down at the rose in her hand.

Decker nearly choked on his own spit when she mentioned marriage consummation. Blushing, furiously, he cleared his throat. “ Um...You needn’t worry about that. It is up to you when or if that happens.” He said, now extremely nervous. “It there is anything I can do. Please let me know. And I would like to get to know you -all of you- better. Raven was the first to ask but if you would like some time alone with me. I will make it happen.” Somehow...he added in his head.

"...And how much do you think that would upset Raven?" Valentina looked at Decker, frowning. "Frankly...Decker...that's like being cheated on...and while I think that it's very sweet of you to show interest in me...I can't do that to Raven, Lacey or Shelby." She said quietly, looking back down. He clearly didn't grasp just how wrong this situation was...
Letting out a small sigh, she continued.
"You've just admitted you have feelings for Raven...so why don't you go and act on them rather than trying to convince the rest of us to be happy? Lacey's happy enough...she's just young, so she feels a little jealous of others getting the attention...Shelby's just not happy with this at all, for whatever reason...and I really don't think you'll be bringing her around any time soon...and, as for me...I'm happy enough, I just need time to adjust...and time to just fit in with the others, stay out of trouble and make sure there's no reason for anyone to dislike me. And being in a romantic relationship with you, well...it wouldn't be the best way to stay out of trouble and stay liked. It's not that I have a problem with you in any way...I think you're a charming and incredibly handsome man...it's just...it wouldn't be right."

Valentina looked at Decker, carefully trying to mask her confusion. He was acting as if he didn't know...but, even if he didn't, she couldn't tell him she hadn't agreed to this. Maybe he didn't know, but...someone in the house would. And she'd pay for telling Decker.
"No, no...on all accounts, I'm okay with being here..." She said quietly, frowning. "But basically...when it comes to real, genuine love I think it's just proper that you devote it to one person...regardless of how many wives you actually have. You can call me old fashioned, but...that's just the way I see it. And by standing back, I'm simply removing some of the hassle for you. I mean...I'm not saying that we shouldn't talk, or that we shouldn't act civil towards eachother or shouldn't spend any time with eachother at all...I'm just saying that...we maybe shouldn't do it in a romantic sense..."

Taking another quick glance around the garden, Valentina huffed quietly and tipped her head back, lifting her glass to her lips and swallowing the rest of her champagne, then gently set the empty glass down on the table closest to her. What was she to do now?
She at first thought about going to see Raven, but after thinking it over decided against it. After all, she'd have plenty of time to talk to her once everything had settled down...hopefully, anyway.
Her other option was Shelby. To be honest, Valentina admired her, in a way...she was still fighting. Something she herself had given up on once she'd been pushed into that van. Whilst Valentina had just accepted the fact that she was going to die here, Shelby still seemed to have a little bit of hope. And, although she felt a small lump rising in her throat at the idea, she thought it was sweet.
And there was the fact that, should she choose to befriend Shelby, she wouldn't have to worry about her abandoning her for Decker...she wanted nothing to do with him. She'd already made that pretty clear.
Putting on a small smile and waving towards the small crowds that still gathered around the garden, Valentina made her way back into her new home, kicking her shoes off once she'd gotten through the door, then picking them up and quietly walking up the stairs, towards the brides' living quarters, and in that, Shelby's room.

Lacey yawned tiredly. She rubbed her eyes and stood up from the table she was sitting at near the presents. Upon standing, pain shot through her feet. She wasn't used to wearing high heels. She found her way inside, and a maid showed her to the brides' living quarters, and to her room. She walked into her room, another yawn escaping her. Her Domestic helped her into a silk nightgown, and fixed her hair. Lacey sat down on her bed, and curled up with a pillow to her chest.

She laid her head back and closed her eyes, but she didn't sleep. She relaxed, letting thoughts bounce around her head. Letting the day sink in. She yawned again.

Valentina walked slowly into the room a few moments later, closing the door behind her quietly. Once the door was shut, she turned and gave Shelby a weak smile, for the first time in the whole night actually feeling that she didn't have to pretend she was happy. She wasn't going to cry in front of Shelby, she knew that much...but still, she knew that she'd be able to detect the hint of sadness in her eyes.
"...Hi..." She said quietly, shifting uncomfortably on her feet by the door, not one hundred percent sure where to put herself. "I hope you don't mind me coming in here...I mean...I can leave, if you want...I guess I just kind of needed a break from all those people downstairs..."

Valentina nodded, smiling weakly at Shelby.
"Don't worry, I won't..." She said quietly, then made her way over to Shelby's bed. She then sat down, gently smoothing out the bedsheets as she did so. "...He won't do anything, you know...I mean...with regards to consummation...not to you or me, anyway..." She looked down at her hands, feeling a small amount of guilt. She'd been so keen on setting Decker up with Raven, but...what if Raven felt the same as she did? The same as Shelby? What if she was just too afraid to let it show?
Pulling herself out of her thoughts, she looked back over at Shelby. "I mean, I basically said no to him downstairs regarding it, and he just took that as his answer...he didn't push or try to force me like my mother told me some Governors do...which is good, because...there's no way I want some wealthy pretty boy rolling around on top of me without my full consent..." She gave a small laugh, possibly because she found the remark funny, but possible to hide the slight wavering in her voice as she spoke. She couldn't really tell. It wasn't that she was jealous or either Raven or Lacey...because, in reality, she had no need to be...Decker had complimented her beauty, showed he cared about her like he did with his other brides, and even made a few small advances...all of which Valentina had rejected, but...they were still what they were...
It was just that...looking around, she could see the conditions she'd be living in for the rest of her life. Albeit, they were pretty, and decorated, and fancy, and made to look like they were special...but she just saw all the pretty as an attempted cover up for all the ugly things Governor Decker and the rest of this establishment had done to bring her and her sister wives here. She didn't want to be here...she wanted to be home. She wanted to see her parents again...even just for a little while...just enough time to tell them she was safe, and she loved them. But that was one thing she'd never get to do. As far as her mother and father knew, she could be lying dead at the side of a road somewhere...or working at a brothel a few towns away...or here. And, although they'd be able to keep up high spirits that she was okay...they'd never fully know. Just like she'd never fully know if they still cared about her, or if they still loved her and were going to try and find her. No more hugs, no more of her mother coming into her bedroom at night and gently curling her hair as they discussed that days events, no more of her father who, on days that he would actually talk to her, would tell her stories of all the animals that had since become extinct, like tigers, lions, flamingoes, cheetas...and of all the countries, with their different languages and cultures and ways of life. Sometimes he would try to teach Valentina part of a new language...but he'd always forget some parts of it or, at least, say he'd forgotten...to this day she wasn't sure if that was the case, or if he found himself actually showing a little bit of care and had to push her away...and so she'd only know a few words. Right now, in the current situation, she couldn't even think of one thing she'd discussed with either of them...and that frightened her. She wasn't ready to forget them. Although, looking around, she'd probably have to. She was going to die here, with no family around her.
And that feeling of loneliness, the feeling that completely took over her and made her almost start to completely shut down at the thought of never feeling that level of love and care again, began to make it's way up and consume her, starting from her fingers and her toes, and making it's way up into her system, her blood turning cold along with it.

Raven's face lit up as soon as she saw Decker approaching her, quickly sitting up from her slumped, defeated position on her seat and giving him a smile when he sat down.
"Hi...I thought you'd forgotten about me..." she said quietly, the flush returning to her cheeks. She then saw the exhaustion on Decker's face and her smile dimmed ever so slightly. He had been fine earlier when they were talking...What had happened since then which seemed to drain him so much? She shook the thought from her head...It didn't matter what had happened, what mattered was that he'd come back for her, and she wasn't alone and abandoned in an unfamiliar place anymore.

Raven felt her chest tighten with panic, which she tried to hide from her eyes as she kept her smile up. What could he possibly want to know from her? All the options that Raven could come up with were not good, and with all of them it was safer to stay away from the honest answer. She always thought the worst in any situation...But, ignoring the sickness in her stomach that came with the panic and anticipation, and the pounding in her ears, she answered:
"Of course." Though, she made no promises in regards to her honesty.

When she eventually came back out of her thoughts, Valentina looked back up and at Shelby, slightly dazed from thinking so much.
"Um...well, yeah...he seemed serious enough..." She said quietly, giving a small nod as she confirmed that fact in her head. Yes...he had to have been being serious.
Opening her mouth to speak again, she hesitated slightly. Should she tell Shelby about how confused Decker had been earlier? How it seemed like he didn't know they'd all been brought here? Glancing at her again and biting cautiously on her bottom lip, she gulped quietly.
"...I don't think he even knows, you know..." She said almost silently, not quite a whisper, but only just loud enough to be heard. "About the Gatherers kidnapping us all...I mean...when I was talking to him earlier, he...well...he told me he could see something between us...in...that...sense...and when I rejected him, he seemed...well...puzzled, y'know? Like...like he thought we'd all come here willingly, and that we'd all want him..."
She wasn't sure whether she should have told her or not, but...it felt too huge to keep to herself. She couldn't have let it stay a secret.
"I-I...I...I mean, please...don't tell him, or anyone else that I told you that..." She added after a slight pause, stumbling slightly over her words. "I mean, because...even if he doesn't know...someone in this place will...and since I told you, I could get into deep shit if anyone who shouldn't know finds out..."
