Introduction
"My heart is pierced by cupid. I disdain all glittering gold. There is nothing can console me, but my jolly sailor bold."
Mermaids. They are prized throughout the world, as well as feared. They are valued by many. From their scales, to their tears, they are hunted, for monetary gain. To have seen a mermaid up close and lived to tell the tale is one of the rarest achievements. For mermaids are lethal, and far more dangerous than those who hunt them.
Deep below the surface of the sea, mermaids thrive. But they are nothing like the story book versions. They are evil, with hearts as cold as the water in which they dwell. They seduce men with their songs, then drag them from their boat, down through the water. They devour the bodies once they have drowned. They are cruel, heartless, and cold.
At least, most of them are.
Four mermaids out in the Caribbean, have no desire to kill the men as their many sisters do so often, so willingly. They watch them, unknowing as to their place in the world.
Pirates sail the seas, trying to capture any mermaids they find. But the most feared of them all, is the pirate Blackbeard.
He sails aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, and with his power, can control ships, waves and winds alike.
Now, he's on a quest, for the Fountain of Youth, but along the way, he must find the ingredients for the ritual, for without them, he cannot achieve eternal youth, and it is now that he needs it most. A prophecy has been foretold, that a one-legged man will kill him, and take his ship. Blackbeard is selfish. He destroys ships, making them turn against the crew on board, and then takes them for himself, bottling them up and keeping a collection. Mutiny aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge is almost nonexistent as the crew are kept in fear of their captain's power.
Blackbeard has captured four young men, for reasons he shall not tell. They are caring men, so even after the attack that cost many men their lives, they still helped the four mermaids, captured for their tears. They help them stay alive on the perilous journey, but do they just care for their health? Or do they feel something much stronger?
Notes
- Mermaids are all female, and they are cold, heartless, and in all, not very nice.
- Takes place in pirate-medieval times. You know, the yo ho yo ho a pirates life for me, type of thing.
- Some men of Blackbeard's crew are almost zombies, being that he brought them back from the dead.
- When they aren't in the water, the Mermaids are human, but they cant really walk, since their natural swimmers
- When a mermaid is about to attack, her face looks like this
- The men care for the mermaids, and will defend them when needed
- As they are in fact mermaids, the mermaids are beyond beautiful, as it is one of their gifts
- If they stay out in the sun to long with part of their body in the water, they dry up and eventually die

As the sails filled with wind and the Queen Anne's Revenge set off, Blackbeard stood at the helm of his ship. His first mate, and daughter, Angelica walked over to him. "Father, the mermaids are secured in the tank. No one," She looked in the direction of the captured men. "besides the crew, knows where they are." Blackbeard chuckled deeply, his laugh cold and heartless. What he didnt notice was a young cabin boy listening in on the conversation. Once Blackbeard has retreated to the captain's quarters, he made his way over to the men, who sat on the docks in the corner, near the hull of the ship. He tapped the shoulder of one of the men (Philip) and whispered to them what he had overheard. "The mermaids are in the brig. What do you think Blackbeard needs 'em for?" He was young and naive, not truly knowing his place in the world.
Back in the chart room, Blackbeard leaned over the maps and charts, looking for a quick route Isla de Tormenta, which, through the mountains, they could reach the Fountain of Youth. After a moment of frustration he jammed his dagger down into the map. His time was running out. The one-legged man would soon catch up to them and his time of death would come. If he could not make it to the Fountain in time, all would be lost.
Syrena
Sitting in the corner of the tank, the young mermaid hummed quietly to herself, not wanting to draw the attention of the other mermaids. Her mind was lost, she had no idea what to do. But she knew one thing. Nothing these pirates did, would make her shed a tear for them. She had no desire to know any of them, but she had to admit, that the five men, the strangers, were...different than the crew of pirates that had worked so hard to capture them. There was something in their eyes when they'd seen them, trapped in the nets.
She looked up at the other mermaids, and watched them swim about the tank. The restraint of not being able to swim freely could drive a mermaid insane. But they were strong, they could handle it, they wouldnt break. At least, she hoped they wouldnt.

Her mind kept drifting and drifting of the thoughts and ideas of what this would bring. Her eyes shifted over towards the mermaid that was in the corner before she got up off of the tank floor and crawled-swim over towards the girl. "What is your name?" She sounded as if she demanded it, but her voice was filled kindness and it even sounded as if she was comforting her; but she wasn't. "Im Bernael." She said, looking over at her.

Trying to dismiss his thoughts he walked over to the Captain.Relax, all you have to do is get this over with so that your father's life won't be threatened. He returned his attention to the Captain and tried to look as respectfull as possible. "Captain is there anything you'd like me to do?" "Want me to check on the girls?"
He hoped the Captain would say yes one of the reasons being so that he could help them, no doubt they'd hate him though. He was one of the people that had helped Blackbeard capture them. But it wasn't as though he'd wanted to. He never could stand to see a person in pain.

Without a saying a word, she gently held onto Syrena's wrist. Going still, she searched her sister's eyes and hoped to find some strength. Or even comfort. Fae was sure that she could see the fear, unsure look in her multicolored eyes. Her warm honey brown hair seemed weightless, gently touching Fae's cheeks. She turned away from her sister, letting go of her wrist. Shaking her head slightly, she pressed her palm against the side of the tank. Closing her eyes, she rested her cheek against the wall that kept her from freedom.

He heard the heavy steps behind him and he let out a small smile. He turned quickly to see the large pirate captain pass him, he drew in a breath once more, noting the hint of dead fish and rum that seemed to seep from the pores of the captain. ‘I wonder if we all smell of fish and rum,’ he thought to himself as he watched the captain move among the crew. He wasn’t exactly a man to look up to, but one must at least be impressed by the stature of such a man.
The mermaids came back into his mind. Their faces flashing through his mind quickly. They had been beautiful, the most beautiful women he had ever seen. Touchable yet so unattainable. His mind slowly slipped into somewhat of a coma as he turned off all other senses and just remembered. Their eyes full of fear, yet courage at the same time. They held onto their dignity and pride as well as any man. He turned his head as he studied them in his mind. He needed to see them again, his being urged him to, but how.

His gaze shifted as footsteps entered the room. He glared at the young man who stood in front of him. "Don't be thinkin' of yerself as part of me crew, boy." He spat. "Thats not what you're here for. Your time will come, make no mistake about that." He glared at the boy, before stabbing a dagger into the table in front of him. It was easy to tell that he was not a happy person at the moment. It was times like these when most knew to ignore him.
Syrena
She looked up at her sister, determination clear in her eyes. She couldn't feel sadness, fear, not in front of these people. She couldn't risk giving them what they wanted. Doing that would make them think they could easily break her sisters. And that was not true. They were strong, and would stay strong, even if it meant death.

Philip was lost in hazy thought as he leaned against the railing of the ship, starring down at the ocean water. They were rather upset, sad, angry. He replayed the whole scene in his head, when the mermaids were captured. He had felt so helpless at the time. What was he suppose to do, go against Blackbeard and possible get killed? No. That was not a option, not at the current time it wasn't. However, he wanted to see them again. They were truly beautiful creatures, he could clearly see where they could lure men in easily, so easily. .
Phil was yanked from his thoughts as a cabin boy tapped him on the shoulder, causing him to turn around immediately. He raised a skeptical brow as the boy spoke, a grin slipping across his lips. The brig? "I'm guessing he wants them for their tears, boy." he chuckled, speaking softly however, not wanting anyone else to really overhear him. "Go on now," he then murmured, glancing in the direction of the brig. It would be a rather risky move, but Philip was willing to take it. Casually, he began walking that way, taking deliberately slow steps. He wanted to see those mermaids again, and nothing was going to stop him.
Naomi-
Naomi stayed in her own small corner of the tank, starring out the glass. A look of pure concentration was written along her face as she thougt. Everything that had happened so far was her fault, and she knew it. She was the oldest, she lead them into the dangerous waters, and she left them for a short period of time. Such a dumb move on her part! Nao flicked her tail in anger, sea green eyes as hard as stone. She would never forgive herself for this. She glanced around the tank at her sisters, feeling as if she should say something encouraging at a time like this, but words were frozen in her throat. It felt as if a invisible hand was choking her. She felt ashamed, but instead of wanting to cry, she wanted to scream.
Nao squeezed her eyes shut, gripping her sides lightly, as if trying to hold herself together before she broke in two. All this time she had some unreal fantasy about humans. She dreamed of them being sweet "things", people just trying to understand mermaids. Oh how she was so wrong. Now Naomi knew the truth however, she knew not to trust them, she knew not to. . Cry for them. That's what these so-called "pirates" wanted, and she was not going to give them her tears. None of her sisters' were.
She clenched her jaw, finally re-opening her stone-cold eyes, looking back out the glass. If a fight was what these humans wanted, she would possibly give it to them. A fight.

When the door to the brig opened, she rose from her spot in the corner and swam to the edge of the tank, placing her hands on the glass and watching as a man entered. He was one of the men who'd seemed to regret the capture of Syrena and her sisters. Another one of the men followed him, and she was cautious as to why they were both in here. Her deep hazel eyes scanned both men with avid curiosity. Why were they down here? Had they come to collect the tears? Why had they acted different than the other men when she and her sisters were caught?

Philip had finally reached the brig, opened the door, and slid inside quickly; Oblivious to the fact someone was following him. Once inside, however, he heard someone walking in also and glanced back to spot Hugo, immediately sighing heavily. "Come in, come in, quickly!" he grumbled, shutting the door after Hugo had walked in so no one would become suspicious of a halfway opened door. He then turned back around, seeing them for the first time since they were captured. The mermaids. His breath caught in his throat for a minute until he finally exhaled loudly, their beauty really shocking him, yet he expected it. It was a weird feeling, like you were just drawn to these strange creatures.
Phil took a step forward, gaze flickering to Hugo before back to the tank. A couple looked rather miserable, one looked angry, a couple even curious; This peeked his own interest. He took another weary step forward, as he raised a dark brow. What now? Just stare at them? He crossed his arms, looking at the one who followed him once more. "What should we do?" he questioned, voice a bit cautious. He wasn't sure, maybe Hugo would turn him in to Blackbeard for coming to the brig, but, he himself was down there also.
Naomi-
Naomi's cold gaze turned towards the swinging piece of wood as it opened letting brief light filter into the room before shutting once more. She swam to the front of the tank, her eyes narrowed as she watched the two men who entered the room. Gazing at them a second she balled up her hand into a fist, placing it against the tank. Unappealing things they were, she wished they would stop watching her sisters. She looked over at Syrena, shaking her head just a tad before glancing back at the "two-legged." What did they want, their tears? Nao wished them good-luck with that. They wouldn't cry, not one bit. She knew this, they were all rather strong willed.
She finally stopped glarring at the two, tilting her head completely to the left side as she watched the humans. She wished she could talk to them, she had a few choice words in mind.

Every ounce of her presence was negative and angry, but Hugo understood that well. He walked to the glass his head tilting a bit as he watched her. He touched the glass gently, his fingertips making contact with the cold prison. He turned back around toward Philip. He walked away from Naomi and back toward the man he walked in with.

Philip blinked a few times as Bernael spoke, then Hugo answered. When he looked at him he narrowed his eyes a bit, shaking his head. "No. I'm not here for their tears either." he replied, looking at him before glancing around the room. It wasn't much of a room, he could clearly tell that, he himself noticing there wasn't any food around. When Hugo spoke again, he finally looked back at the tank to watch the mermaids reaction. The one at the front of the tank with her fist against the glass began shaking her head rapidly, then replied with "No, we aren't, YOU should know that, you're one of them." She was clearly angry.
Philip watched with amazement as the man that followed him in began walking up to the tank. What was he thinking? He crossed his arms as he watched him before looking back at the door. Tonight they could probably come back and be on the "safer side" instead of in daylight, like now; People would become curious. He cleared his throat when Hugo started walking back to him. "We should get them food then, bring it back tonight." he mused, coming to conclusion that would be best, but question was: What do they eat??
Naomi-
Naomi glanced at Bernael as she spoke, biting her lower lip as she just shook her head. She looked back at the humans though as one spoke, squinting just a bit as she looked at him. Her eyes danced with curiosity as they drifted between the two guys, remembering them from when her sisters' and herself were first captured. They were two of the five who actually looked, just a little bit, concerned? Maybe that was the completely wrong word for it. When Hugo spoke again Nao took this as her turn to speak. She shook her head, "No, we aren't, you should know that, you're one of them." she grumbled towards the guy, her hand having relaxed against the glass, her palm laying on the thick glass.
However, she tensed up as the one who spoke began walking in her direction, yet she didn't move, watching him with careful eyes. When he tilted his head, she tilted her own to the opposite side, quirking a brow. Nao blinked when the tips of his fingers touched the glass, having quickly moved her hand, but in return brought a finger up and placed it where his fingertips had been; Even though by this time he had already turned away. She finally ripped her eyes from that spot, eyes following him as he walked towards the other guy. Walked. She wanted to walk so bad. The whole feeling of wanting to know everything about humans came back, replacing some of that anger she felt.

Syrena swam to the top of the tank and hoisted herself up on the edge, balancing on her arms. She had her eyes on the younger of the two men (Philip) Her eyes were filled with curiousity as she looked at him. Why had he and the others that were like him care about her and her sisters? What made them so different than the cruel men that made up Blackbeard's crew? Her hazel eyes glanced at the other man for a moment before drifting back to the other man.
