If allowed, most people would enjoy Marcus: his diffident smile, his elegant touch, his rolled sleeves and his easy, quiet manner, his artist’s habit of rubbing his forehead with the inside of his wrist, his patient good humor and his steady good sense. Though talk with him is casual and sporadic, there is never anything simple about it. Even a light “How are you” is a nuanced question, without it seeming to be; and your invariable answer (“Fine”) he can read easily enough without you having to spell anything out. And though he seldom pries, or questions, it's felt that he has a better sense of you than most others.
