The dust has settled, the war is over, people have begun to build again. But this time they build up. Set themselves on glorified pedestals in the sky. Eden, perfection, join us or be Forgotten.

Introduction

Image

The year is 2713 and Eden, a floating utopia in the skies, is suspended above the the towering points of Old York. Built on the foundations of peace, harmony, and the Meyers-Briggs system, the city is one of seven key members of the New World Order Counsel (NWOC). The other cities are: Tingarri (Old Uluru), Themiscyra (Old Rio de Janeiro), Erewhon (Old Berlin), Elysium (Old Tokyo), Nirvana (Old New Delhi), Nysa (Old Nairobi).

Eden is one of three cities that utilizes the Meyers-Briggs personality sorting to govern their citizens academic and career options. Placed into one of sixteen possible personality types, people are then prompted into certain areas of work based on their type. In this way the government retains control over the population and economy. The Board of Education consists of sixteen members each from a different type caste. One serves as an ambassador/advisor to the Chancellor, this job rotates between the sixteen members every five years. BoE determine the flow of "Switches" (people who walk the borderlines between personalities) into the different type castes based on demand.

The political climate roller-coasters between recovery, tension, and war. To date there have been thirteen world wars which have systematically weeded out weaker cities and/or cities caught in the crosshairs. Currently the political world is transitioning from recovery to tension as Erewhon furthers it's political goals of controlling all the cities and their respective resources. Eden is fighting to retain their status as head representative of North America in the NWOC. The continuing clash between Erewhon and Eden sets the rest of the remaining thirteen cities on edge as alliances are formed and broken, and the underground stockpiling of weapons begins.

In Eden, one of the Chancellor's seven close advisors is selling out to Erewhon, while the Head Science Advisor secretly begins testing to create a super powered army in order to defend Eden while setting themselves up to be the savior of Eden. The Chancellor's declining health is putting Eden at risk. Meanwhile his daughters attempt to gain control of the politics, and govern in their father's stead while ferreting out the traitor. Underneath Eden, in the bowels of Old York, a psychopathic paranoid works to clean out the biological poisoning that has resulted from years of war and radiation destroying the earth; but she is being manipulated by her older sibling, who utilizes her brilliance to spur their super soldier program onwards.

When two teens are caught up in the experiment, their worlds will tumble as they are launched into new worlds of dangerous politics, underhanded business, and accidental superhero-hood. Along the way they encounter new friends and foes, while dodging the government and working to protect Eden from enemies both foreign and domestic.

Ayleta let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding as the panic in her head seemed to dissipate at a soft voice in the back of her mind. She looked to Cecily, wondering if she was going insane, "Did you....did you...hear that?" she asked before shaking her head, "Nevermind."

She turned away from the table and searched the room, panic rising up once more when she saw no obvious exits except for the gaping hole in the ceiling. Suddenly she felt something vibrating in her pocket, digging the object out she realized it was the book she had snagged earlier. It had a red glow around it that grew steadily brighter and practically hummed with energy. Taking it in both hands, Ayleta felt a wave of comfort wash over her along with the overwhelming sensation of how right it was.

"Right, we need an exit," she muttered, looking back around the room. The book shook in her hands and grew to the size of foot and was at least three inches thick. Opening, the pages whipped forward and a breeze picked up in the room. Landing on a page, Ayleta unconsciously read the strange words, her eyes glowing red. A great light erupted from the book, swirling about Ayleta and Cecily before engulfing them completely.

Ayleta blinked as the light faded and gasped at what she saw. They were no longer under the Library, but back on the platform from earlier that day. She could see the elevator they had ridden in front of her, and behind her she saw the start of the pathway they had taken. "I-wha-this--HOW?" she sputtered.

Cecily grinned at her silent victory. This is going to be SO. MUCH. FUN. She thought excitedly. Her self-congratulation was cut short by the spike of energy and awareness that burst out of Ayleta. She snapped her attention back to her friend, her grin fading. Her grin disappeared altogether when Cecily noted the book in Ayleta’s hands. Any normal book wouldn’t have bothered Cecily, but THIS one was glowing red. And it suddenly started growing. And then the damn thing opened itself and kicked up a tornado in the room. Cecily tried to catch her friend’s eye so that they might share a moment of mutual terror together, but Cecily found that she was doomed to a private sort of terror. Ayleta’s eyes were glowing red, and she was muttering something that didn’t sound like English. For the second time that day Cecily suddenly found herself blinded by a strange light coming from a stranger object. I just wanted a normal adventure. Was that too much to ask? She demanded in her mind.

When the light cleared and the winds died down, Cecily glanced around to find herself at the initial fork point on the path that had led them to the most insane afternoon of her life. Ayleta was spluttering. Glancing at her friend, Cecily could sense the colossal confusion there. “You said it, Leta,” Cecily replied fervently.

"What did I just do?!" Ayleta practically shrieked, looking down at the book in amazed terror. "This is impossible! We were--and now we're--but we didn't-" She looked hopelessly to her friend, trying to understand some of what had just happened. Taking in a deep breath, she tried to calm herself down and sort out her thoughts. Breathing out, she straitened and closed the book which seemed to sense her need to put it away and shrank down to a pocketable size. Shoving in her pants pocket she turned and grasped Cecily by the shoulders. Looking into her acid green eyes she asked determinedly, "What the fuck happened back there?"

Cecily was barely able to control her dancing eyes. Sure her friend got a weird end of the stick, but she had chosen to make eye contact with the new and improved Cecily. This was no longer a good idea. I have chosen you Ayleta Raquel Trippoli, she thought deliberately, trying to sound mystic. She pushed this thought toward Ayleta and waited for the confusion spike for a few seconds. Once she got it, she grinned and said, “Guess who just got super powers?” She raised her eyebrows, grinning like a child. We did she thought, pushing her conclusion into Ayleta’s mind. “Though yours are less super and more….” She tapped her chin in exaggerated thought. “Well, enhanced normal.” She grinned again.

Ayleta felt a shiver run down her spine as the same soft almost voice from back in the lab. "By the Ennea..." she breathed, releasing Cecily's shoulders. "Though yours are less super and more….well, enhanced normal. She stiffened at her friend's words. "Wait, what do you mean 'enhanced normal'? I just fucking teleported us with a magic spell from a book! How in Briggs' name is that anywhere near enhanced normal?! If anyone's 'enhanced normal' here it's you! Little miss mind manipulator!"

Cecily arched her eyebrow and pursed her lips, staring sternly into her insolent friend’s eyes. “Sweetie,” she began, condescension lacing her tone, “I am speaking into your MIND. YOU, on the other hand, are reading out of a BOOK. WHICH of those two things do YOU think is more normal?” Say reading a book, she ordered Ayleta’s mind. She wasn’t trying to be a bitch, really, she just wanted to see how far she could go. Her gaze intensified, Say it she mentally ordered.

Ayleta's shoulders tightened and the return of the voice. Only this time it was stronger, more demanding. The words almost left her mouth before she could stop them. "Read--NO! Stay out of my head!" she yelled, eyes going red again, her fists sparking with red energy. Pain pulsed at her temples, the orders warring with her own mental functions. She quickly turned away from Cecily, realizing she couldn't stop the build up of energy in her hands from releasing. Flinging her hands out, two red crescents of energy flew to the end of the platform leaving angry scorch marks in their wake.

Breathing heavily, she attempted to push the energy back where it came from. Turning back to face Cecily she pointed angrily, hand still encased in a red glow. "Don't you EVER do that again!"

Cecily’s eyes grew wide as she realized how NOT OK what she did had been. Ayleta’s eyes and hands started glowing red again, and Cecily took several steps back, glancing around for an escape. Ayleta turned and seemed to shoot red lightning from her hands. When the girl turned back to Cecily, eyes still vivid red and anger spilling out of her, Cecily had trouble not making a break for it. She shrunk into herself, trying hard to fight her annoying ‘start crying’ response so often employed back in Eden. "Don't you EVER do that again!" Ayleta’s words whipped across her like she had been slapped. Cecily bit her bottom lip, shrinking ever more into herself. She didn’t dare send any soothing thoughts to Ayleta, and she never wanted to fully enter another's mind ever again. The damage was done. In the span of less than an hour, she had rendered one person catatonic and another explosively angry. Maybe she had gotten the short end of end of the stick after all. “Ok. I won’t. I promise,” she whispered. “I’m sorry,” Cecily said quietly, her voice breaking without her permission. “That was stupid.”

Ayleta crammed her eyes shut, hands curling into fists, and shaking terribly turned all her focus towards forcing down the energy. Sinking to the ground she put her head between her legs, taking in deep gulps of air trying to remember what her shrink had said about keeping calm and breathing exercises. Oh sweet Briggs, she screamed mentally, This can't be happening. Is this really happening. How? How? HOW? And where? Where's all this energy coming from. What if I can't stop it! Shit shit shit shit SHIT. STOP. Don't panic. Panic makes it worse. Okay, okay, breathe. In, one beat, two, three, four, five. Hold, one beat, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Out, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Again. In. Hold. Out.

After a few minutes the burning sensation behind her eyelids began to lessen. Slowly she peeked at her hands. Relief crashed over her at the lack of red energy surrounding them. Shakily she raised her head to look at Cecily. The other girl was practically hunched in on herself, looking far smaller than her five foot frame. Terror struck Ayleta's heart for a moment, thinking she might have hurt her friend, but she pushed it down, determined to remain calm, and in control. "Cec?" she asked quietly.

Cecily stared warily at Ayleta as the girl sank to the ground. There was no way Cecily was going to touch her, but the dimming red haze around her fists was reassuring. Taking no chances, Cecily remained curled in on herself to appear as small and nonthreatening as possible should the red eyed fury decide to make a reappearance… After a few minutes, a perfectly normal Ayleta turned to look at her. “Cec?”

Cecily was pretty sure she was going to drown in relief. “Oh my BRIGGS I’m so sorry!! I shouldn’t have tried the mind control on you!! I shouldn’t have tried it on the psycho lady but I couldn’t really help it that time. I think she’s a vegetable now! I probably tore half her mind out when I tried to get out… But what could I do? The freaking floor caved in and you fell through and there was this nasty thud and I couldn’t get down in time to save you because the floor was so unstable and then the psycho doctor took you and she dragged you away and she probably stabbed you with a needle too, but I was still stuck in the library and then the room was filled with light and so I just jumped for it and then she was dragging you out of the machine and so I freaked out and she was telling me to remain calm and said my daddy would approve and so I tried to take her eyes out but she stabbed me with this green crap and it was hot and cold all at the same time and I couldn’t fight her anymore, not that I was doing a good job in the first place,” she stopped for a quick breath and then plunged on, continuing to speak at about a million kilometers an hour. “And then she stuck ME in the freaky machine thing and I couldn’t get out and my arm hurt and then suddenly EVERYTHING hurt like I had been set on fire and I couldn’t see then then I could feel light above me and so I grabbed at it but not with my hands it was like I grabbed it with my MIND and suddenly I was trapped and there were voices and they wanted me to kill the monkeys but I didn’t WANT to kill monkeys and they were telling me someone would hurt me and that mugs were evil and they wanted me to cut out my heart for science and play with fire and all kinds of horrible stuff and I realized my hair was wrong so I tried to see my reflection and I think I went a little over board cuz I started trashing her lab. And it HURT! So I had to get out of her head I think it was her head anyway but I couldn’t get out and so I had to tear my way out and I felt sticky and I finally got back to my right size and hair and I got out of the machine but you were on the floor and SHE was on the floor and you were scared and confused so I tried to tell you with my mind that it was gonna be ok but it didn’t work because you stood up and produced this stupid BOOK from your pocket and it was GLOWING and then it GREW and you started reading it and there was light again and I couldn’t understand and suddenly we were like flying or something and we landed here and you didn’t understand what happened and you were swearing so I tried to talk to your mind and show you what I could do by making you say my powers were better but they’re not I SWEAR they’re not! REALLY!! And then you got mad and told me to stay out of your head and your eyes and hands got really red and you shot red lightning back there and then you sort of, I don’t know collapsed... and yeah,” she trailed off sheepishly and stayed quiet for a few seconds. Looking fearfully at Ayleta’s nose instead of her eyes, Cecily asked, “What now? Can we be done with the adventure yet?”

Ayleta was suddenly thankful for all the practice she had had with understanding Cecily's rapid panic talk. Taking a few moments, she worked on sorting together all of what Cecily told her. It seemed right, Ayleta could remember feeling like she was on fire as well. She didn't think she'd ever forget that pain, it still hummed in the back of her head and in the base of her bones. Taking a deep breath she got back to her feet and looked between her hands and Cecily.

"I-I don't really know what now...but yeah, I think that's enough adventure for today." She tried to force a laugh but the sound came out too mangled to be classified as such. Sighing, she drew a hand over her ragged face. "I think all I wanna do now is curl up with mounds of comfort food."

“Oh I’m with you!!” Cecily gushed, relieved to have the whole mind control issue blow over. She tried to laugh as well, but it came out nearly as mangled as Aylata’s. “I can’t imagine going back to my LIFE like this, though.” She laughed nervously again, the humor curdling like month old milk. Her eyes grew distant, “How can I walk through the halls knowing what EVERY SINGLE PERSON is feeling??” she shuddered slightly and a settled next to Ayleta. She leaned tentatively against the girl’s shoulder. “What if I accidentally, you know, TALK to them?”

Ayleta welcomed her friend's physical comfort. She snorted, "Oh Briggs, good luck with that one. You're gonna have to think before you talk now!" She laughed a little at the mental image of Cecily not being able to just babble out her usual Edenite pleasantries. Then a horrifying thought struck her. "Oh fuck. I'm gonna have to control my temper." She sat, rather dazed at the idea that now if she got too mad she might toast a teacher or another student. Dear Ennea, all she wanted to do today was take Cecily around Old York, show her a good time. But now here they were, sitting on the filthy platform, trying to figure out how they were going to cope with their new powers.

Ayleta suddenly barked a loud laugh as the irony of it hit her. "You have to control you mouth, and I have to control my temper! We're so fucked!"

Cecily pursed her lips in annoyance. She desperately wanted to push a rather emphatic "Oh shut up" into her laughing friend’s mind. She refrained, however. The very real threat of red lightening taking her head off was just enough for her to keep her thoughts to herself. Cecily didn’t find the situation all that funny but she snuggled into Ayleta’s side anyway. “Yeah,” she agreed sardonically, “We’ll be a real hit when we have to meet the twins tomorrow.” She smirked to herself, imagining Ayleta's reaction that was no doubt unfolding just out of her view.

Cecily had never been as sweet and innocent as her mother, teachers, classmates and especially her father would have liked. As she sat on the edge of a dirty metal pathway, in the middle of Briggs knows where Old York, it slowly dawned on her just what she could now be capable of. Suddenly, her world was starting to open up before her. All her years of pent up thoughts and feelings could now be expressed to the yahoos that surrounded her. Now everyone could be hers to toy with! She couldn’t wait to get home and start helping her mother achieve a near human level of kindness instead of her usual level that was much akin to a mutant, killer, hornet’s. She thanked whatever fate’s there might be silently that her powers were much subtler and MUCH more entertaining than Ayleta’s. No one would ever have to know what was happening to the people around her. ESPECIALLY not Ayleta.

Ayleta froze at the mention of the twins. "Shit," she swore. "I forgot all about them!" Of course Cecily had to get them invited to tea with the veritable princesses of Eden. And of course her mother would have found out and forced her to go. She groaned at the thought of having to dress up tomorrow. She idly wondered if she could get away with a pair of nice pants, though she knew her mother would try to force something more feminine on her. "Hey, can I come over to your house before we go tomorrow? Y'know, just in case my mom orders me to wear a dress or some shit?"

Cecily's grin spread across her face like the light from a sunrise across Eden. She laughed, sitting up and brushing her hair away form her face in a heavily practiced fluid movement. She had done it so many times during socials to draw attention to her graceful neck and delicate collarbones that it was basically habitual. "Of course you can! Mother couldn't possibly say no to her future queen could she?" She laughed blithely again at the thought of Ayleta as queen. She sobered rapidly, her tone becoming business like. "We'll have to go shopping, of course. I, for one, have nothing to wear; which of course means you have absolutely nothing to wear. I saw an adorable dress that would work well on you in this adorable boutique downtown." She rummaged through her bag for a split second before she extracted her tablet. Her delicate fingers began to fly across its surface, barely seeming to touch it. "They don't close for several more hours," she glanced up appraisingly, "but knowing you, this will likely have to be some dramatic production. So. We'll get our nails and such done tonight and shop for me. Then tomorrow we'll get your gown, thus minimizing your time in it." She tapped the screen of her tablet decisively several more times before she set it back to silent and shoved it back into her little bag. She hopped up and dusted herself off, turning to Ayleta and inquiring brightly, "Sound like a plan?" in a tone that very much implied that it had BETTER sound like an indisputable plan.

Ayleta groaned as Cecily ordered the rest of their day out. She stood up with her friend and dusted off before resigning herself to her fate. There was no way she was going to be able to talk Cecily out of shopping for her. She knew, she had tried. Sighing she muttered, "Yeah, yeah, fine, I guess we can go shopping since I dragged you into an abandoned library and got us shot up with Ennea knows what."

She started walking over to the elevator, "But I have some demands of my own. No polish on the nails, clean and trimmed but no polish. And we do nails first, and while you're nails are being done you look up all the things you want to try on so I don't have to wait around forever for you to start trying things on."

Cecily waited with a prim sort of dignity for her friend to get up and submit herself to their afternoon. She fought down the urge to assist Ayleta with the brushing off of dirt and various other unknown substances from her clothes, knowing that touching Ayleta without her knowledge or consent would not be taken well. She bit her lip, and trotted after her friend in the direction of the decrepit elevator, only half listening to the girl’s demands. Ayleta could demand all she wanted, everyone could, but deep down, Cecily knew she would now only answered to herself. “Oh fine!” she replied airily. “Whatever makes you happy and has a skirt!” she gestured noncommittally grinning, knowing Ayleta couldn’t see it.

Once the two of them were in the elevator and she had arranged herself on the despicable seats to her satisfaction she nodded to Ayleta to initiate their assent. Cecily braced her heeled feet and gripped the sides of her seat, using all of her training to try to appear as if she wasn’t, while inertia tried to shove her spine through the floor of the death trap. She could only breathe normally once they had come to the lower levels of Eden and, of course, assumed an air of utter nonchalance forbidding further comment on their morning. With only a half flounce, she exited the horrid thing before Ayleta and hailed the two of them a passing cab.

Cecily Vanderbilt spent the rest of the afternoon subtly bossing Ayleta around and dragging her from shop to shop whilst secretly contemplating this new life development and how she would use it
