If you asked any of the people who frequented the bar Tony owns or even works on the nearby base that Tony frequents one weekend out of every month, everyone would all agree on one thing: that Antonia Garcia is tough, no-nonsense chick who could and would drop-kick you in a heartbeat if you ever tried her. She was a handful growing up and Tony still is to this day. As a kid, she would have said that she acted the way she did because she didn't want no one taking her for a weakling or thinking they had something over her. As an adult, however, such an abrasiveness has been heavily ingrained into her DNA, but also it's simply because that's just how she is. She was the only girl that her paternal grandparents were given from any of their three sons, and so upon growing up with nothing but a baby brother and male cousins, it was more of a survivalist tactic in being someone not many people aspired to fuck with. It isn't to say that she comes off directly as unapproachable and unfriendly; she wouldn't be able to pull as many loyal customers and be found conversing with a range of different people at the bar if she was. The fact of the matter is that most people who know Tony knows that she isn't the type to be easily impressed by wealth, typical pick-up lines from arrogant potential suitors, and she's not the type to play games or keep anyone on their toes. There's some positivity in that in that Tony's quite direct. Granted, that means she's the first person ready to jump in your face if she hears her name or someone she cares about name in your mouth, but also that she's not the type to keep anyone guessing. If you wanted to know where you stand with her, then you'll know about it. If you wanted to know if she wanted you, even on the level of wanting more than just a night in your bed or vice versa, she has no qualms about telling you. It just so happens that you really need to take the fact that she's unafraid of walking up to a person she really dislikes and knocking their teeth out if they've managed to piss her off. The point is that Tony is the type to not ask for something from others that she herself wouldn't give. Though she sometimes has a word time formulating words of sentiment due to always needing to be the level-headed one, not many are unable to tell how she feels about them from the actions she takes. She's action-oriented, after all.

While Tony's main concern will always be about her brother and her family's legacy, no one can say that she is an unkind person. She might have a bit of a low patience for whining and people coming to her with petty issues, but it's rare for her to not care enough about a person down on their luck and not offer at least a hot meal, whether it's at the bar or even in her own apartment depending on who the person is. She's always been a person people can depend on to get the job done and while she never really had some big dream or aspiration like others, Tony does know what hard work is. She can be playful and even flirtatious depending on who she's interacting with, and she damn sure knows how to let loose after all of these years, knows how to have a good time while making sure you're doing the same, but Tony isn't stupid. She's not the sibling who really enjoyed school, but she has enough street smarts to be wise enough to give sage advice or at least know how to navigate certain situations. More emotional ones aren't her forte, but she's definitely again not a fearful person. And even she can be blunt and hardly believes in sugar-coating things, Tony still is quite caring, a bit of that maternal role she was tasked with once her mom died, shining through. She sticks up for those she cares about quite fiercely, even physically if the situation calls for it, while calling them on their shit if they need to hear it. Granted, her own stubborn self may not want to hear some truths about her person, but that's neither here nor there. She's a touch possessive about those and what she deems as hers, but there's again, there's no denying when she loves you. She just might not always say it. Can't catch her slipping and being too soft, after all.

Neither of Tony's parents came from a large sum of money or families with net works, but the one thing Tony appreciates even to this day was the fact that they both came from love, and it showed. Her father's side of the family was nothing but boys with a legacy of holding down a successful bar in Manhattan while the rest of the family lived in Brooklyn, which meant dealing with the bus the majority of her life. Or, when they had it, a drive in her uncle Frank's car. Granted, Tony knows that somebody is probably sneering down their nose at the idea of a child sitting at the cash register of a bar, watching bar fights and drunken mishaps. Hell, even some of her instructors blamed the violent environment on her more reckless and rebellious behavior. That it wasn't fair for her to witness the police pulling up to the bar occasionally, the one time she walked in a couple having sex, or even the fact that she learned how to hustle for candy or pocket change by her uncle Dom. However, all of her adolescent behavior could not be blamed on her environment. It was just her. As her parents would tell you if they were still alive, Tony was a bad kid from day one; not troubled, just bad as hell and an audacious busy body with more attitude in her than she out to have. She had no problem calling some of the little girls who sneered at her out on their snooty behavior, pulled a few pigtails when a few of them told themselves they were going to be bullies, and had no problem with being with the boys. Tony grew up a tomboy through and through. All in all, she had a relatively normal childhood until she was seven. They weren't super rich, but with her Dad running the family business and her mom serving as both a waitress and a nurse, they were never without and occasionally, they had enough to really splurge like they wanted to. And with a spunky kid like Tony, neither of her parents were able to say they had a boring home.

It was a shock to seven year old Antonia when her mother made her explain that the newborn baby her father brought home did not come from mommy, but from a woman Daddy had been sleeping with on the side. Tony wasn't stupid; she knew her parents' marriage wasn't perfect. Her mom had had several miscarriages after her in their attempts to have more children, which led to more arguments. Even when they tried to hide it, Tony could cut the tension with a knife. Yet and still, there was never a point when home didn't feel like home and soon enough, especially with how her mom clung to the baby Wes, her brother just became family, regardless of her father's affairs. In fact, Tony would tell you that she barely remembers or cares to remember a life before Weston being in their lives. Tony clung to the idea of being a big sister, especially after her mom died. Ovarian cancer ran on her mom's side of the family and while she had known it was a possibility, to have it was a completely different story. It put a lot of pressure on Tony's father. Though the bar was fairly still popular and considered a spot for tourists, along with its faithful customers and those who knew which nights to come by for a lively time, her mom's income had helped a lot. Neither of his siblings helped financially and with his wife's needing to take off for treatments, he had more expenses plus two children. None of which mattered because Tony lost her mom at ten and a bit of her childhood as well. She had vowed to the older woman that she would watch after their two boys since no one else would, and that's exactly what she did.

While her Dad worked longer hours by taking on a second job while helping prepare the food they served at the bar, Tony tasked herself with both making sure Wes taken care of and helping with the money, sometimes coming all the way over to the bar to count up the proceeds and make sure the store was clean so that her Dad didn't spend the night. Which meant that she didn't really view school as an opportunity to dream and all that Jazz. It was a means to an end. Her dad was pressed for her to at least graduate. So that was her only real goal: graduate. Such responsibility on a growing girl was probably why she grew even tougher, got addicted to being wild in her free time, and even got her interested in marijuana, drinking and tattoos. As much as her father had blamed himself for the times Tony was caught slightly drunk in someone's car or having to treat a scar from a fight, she knew it was all her. Her needing to let loose that wild side because, yeah she had an adventurous spirit, but also she had something to call hers. This lifestyle, her brand of crazy - it was trippy, but in the midst of trying to keep her family together in her own way, she could have this. Especially considering the fact that the only thing Tony knew for certain that she was going to do was be a bartender at the bar. She had known what tasted good together and always had an audience (of men whose attention disgusted her for how they sometimes leered at her for her growing assets) wiling to try her concoctions. The reserves, though, had sounded like a good idea when she was seventeen. Not only could she take the physically combative force and use it for something productive, she both could get benefits from the army while still being able to help with her father and brother. It was a good idea for her and it worked for all of them. Until last year when her father admitted to having lung cancer.

He had been trying to keep it under wraps because he knew how hard Tony had always worked for him and their family, and he didn't want to add any stress to Wes' life. But considering his coughing fits and how weaker he has been getting, he couldn't keep it a secret. And his revealing it finally didn't actually lessen the blow of his loss and all that cane with it. Sure, their family offered to help, but much like his daughter, Tony's dad has stubbornly refused their assistance when they had gotten behind on mortgage payments. He had even opted to not tell Tony until god's dying days. It hurt, all of this stuff being put on her - even if Tony never says it. Not to mention wanting to keep Wes in school and make sure he gets to college. Which meant that Tony had to make a hard decision: give up her family home. Housing in New York was expensive in general; a house on their salary was just not going to cut it. It wasn't like the place felt like home anymore with just the two of them anyway. The one thing she vowed though was to keep the bar going, not just because of its history T having been opened in the fifties and really popular back then, but because it had always been hers. Her childhood. Her playground. Her sanctuary. So she found a cheap apRtmebt for her brother and herself near it and sure, they struggle more than they ever had growing up. Tony has more responsibility and Wes is even working outside the bar. But everything's working for now and that's all that matters.

xxx"should i spell it out for you?
xxxno one here is bulletproof.
xxxso what are you to do?
xxxbattle. battle on through."

Sam's weekends were usually quiet, and the Thanksgiving weekend had been no exception. She'd lamented her short hair, researched if extensions were an option, realised that she'd probably end up getting sick of them too, researched wigs, then lamented her lack of available funds. When she'd had long hair, she'd often longed to get it cut as short as it was now, and for the most part, she liked it. It would have just been nice to change things up.

Her time for her usual 5k run was getting better, and she'd decided to start trying to challenge herself a little, either by increasing her pace or increasing the distance. She wished she lived out in the countryside or somewhere with different terrains to push herself a little, but then she'd also miss city life and all of her friends.

But before she could decide where she was going to stay or what she was going to do, she had to earn money first. Work was the one thing she was happy with. She loved working for and with Tony. The regulars were pleasant, the work wasn't that bad, and it paid the bills. If she ever did move, she'd miss this more than anything.

She looked up as the door opened and a familiar whirlwind blew in. Holly burst through the door, dragging Weston behind her. She grinned and shook her head, retrieving her notebook and pen as she headed over to a table that had caught her attention. It was a group of college age guys- none of them much older or younger than her. One tried to chat her up, but it made her laugh instead of making her uncomfortable. No, her life wasn't that bad.

i am feelin mighty neglected. DDDDDDD;

The one thing Tony could say that she changed from when her father ran The Drunken Puerto Rican was the employee uniform. While Wes would use more sophisticated words like it being almost misogynistic or something else complicated to express dislike for the fact that most of the female employees had to wear skirts or even dresses of some kind while males had more freedom, Tony just felt like people weren't comfortable. And she hated discomfort. So, although she definitely respected her grandfather and father's legacies, Tony made some changes. She couldn't exactly stop male patrons from coming in and making drunk passes at the ladies, but she could allow the girls to wear pants that they could safely knee one of the fuckers in the groin in without feeling like they might give everyone else a peek under their skirts. Simple black top, denim bottoms of some variety, and shoes that everyone felt comfortable with wearing. It was one of the reasons why she herself was not at all in what one would constitute as a uniform. Then again, Tony just woke up on some days and if she didn't care about being too cute, then she was very willing to throw on the first top and pants she saw to go about her day in.

Which was what happened today.

"But, honey, you've been saying for five years that you were gonna put a ring on my finger and I ain't seen no bling yet," Tony whined with a pout at the bar, a twinkle of mirth in her brown eyes as she conversed with one of her frequent guests. The man in question, a one Jahil Rivera, appeared wounded, clutching his chest. He didn't speak much English, whether by choice or something else Tony couldn't fathom to know, but he understood her. And she understood him. "CariΓ±o, Β‘me haces daΓ±o! Te dije que lo conseguirΓ© para ti." {Sweetheart, you wound me! I told you that I will get it for you.} Tony good-naturedly rolled her eyes at him and poured him another glass of shot, taking away the basket of french fries that he had finished. "Yeah, yeah, yeah," she brushed him off with a nonchalant wave of her hand.
"Whatever you say." She had just thrown the contents of the basket, left over paper and ketchup-soaked napkins, into the trashcan behind the bar when the front door swung open. Tony's face lit up when she saw who it was. "Oh you did, huh?" She exclaimed, leaning up onto the counter with elbows on the flat surface so that she could comfortably stare at the two. "Well, I'm glad you did. If I didn't have someone like you in charge, Holly, he'd probably never come home and we can't have that." Tony smiled away the unimpressed stare Wes gave her. "I mean, I could get Sam over there to replace him." Rolling his eyes, Wes got the redhead to release him with a "Gonna go see if my uncle needs any help today, Holly" over his shoulder as he went. Tony's eyes followed his movement for just a moment, but then she was pulled back to beam at Holly. "So, how was your day today, kiddo? Want something to eat or drink?"

Weston left her, but Holly wasn't the least bit bothered by that as she hurried to sit on an empty bar stool, as if she felt right at home here. Luckily, today she had chosen a seat that wasn't directly next to any of the other bar patrons, but that wasn't done by choice, out of consideration for the other people trying to enjoy their drinks and bar food, but simply out of chance. "It was good, it was good!" she insisted, though it was clear that she was rushing to answer those questions so that she could say what was actually on her mind, and she did just that a second later, as she rethought her initial decision to sit on the bar stool and hopped off of it quickly. She tossed her backpack onto the stool then, frantically searching through it for two envelopes. One was a pale blue color, containing a store bought card, and the other was a plain white envelope, decorated with hearts, stars and polka dots via a neon yellow highlighter. The store bought card contained a short message from Makayla to Tony, officially thanking her for allowing Holly to sleep over on Thanksgiving night when Makayla had been intoxicated. Tucked inside of it was a Starbucks gift card. While Makayla had written the card out and asked Holly to sign it, as if she were the one thanking Tony for the sleepover, Holly just wouldn't do with signing her name to a card that didn't contain an original message thought up by herself! When Makayla refused to allow her to write the extravagant message that she told Makayla on the spot, Holly refused to sign the original card, and instead, insisted that she would write her own.

"I have something for you!" she announced when she finally found them, and it was then that she placed her backpack on the floor by the bar stool and took her seat again. "Well, it's two things, but like I already told Wes, only one of them is really important and the other is a lie, but it's okay," she said, her words coming out in their traditionally rapid fashion as her mouth tried to keep up with where her brain was going. She didn't give Tony a second to respond before opening up the white envelope for Tony. "Okay, so this is my present for you, but it's not a real present because Makayla wouldn't give me the money that I needed to buy you a real present, and I forgot to ask Cara to bring me back to CVS yesterday, so you just get this for now, but you can pretend it's a real present, okay?" Again, there wasn't more than a second's worth of time between that and the next set of words, as she pulled out the sheet of loose leaf that was again covered in highlighter ink. She extended it towards Tony for a second, only to pull it back at a second thought. "I'll read it to you because you probably can't read it, since I had to write it with a highlighter since Makayla wouldn't give me the pen that she was using and I couldn't find any other pens, and I forgot that I had pencils in my backpack, so I was just looking through the drawers in the kitchen and I found a highlighter, and I can read it, since I know how to read highlighters, but it's probably too yellow for your eyes," she rambled on, as she straightened out the crinkled sheet of paper on the bar top before holding it up.

"Okay, so here's how it goes:

'Dear Tony, hi! This is a card for you, that I'm writing because Makayla wouldn't let me write my message in her card for you, so I'm writing my own and you can pick which one you like better. Just so you know, Makayla wrote my name on her card and pretended that I signed it and she could probably go to jail for that because it's illegal to pretend to be me. So you need to know that this is the only letter I've ever written you, okay? So dear Tony, hi. Thank you for letting me sleep on your couch and have a sleepover with you and Wes, and letting me use your floss and mouthwash. Next time, you can sleep on my couch and you can use anything you want. Love, Holly'."

She set the sheet of paper down when she was finished, and looked to Tony with wide eyes, expecting the positive reaction she was looking for. Again, though, she had to interrupt that train of thought as her hands found themselves searching through the ripped-open envelope that she had pulled the paper from, only to pull out a small packet of sugar from the inside. "Ooh, and here! This is sugar for you. Yesterday I was at Cara's house, and I was telling Brooklyn all about my letter for you, and I wanted her to let me take one of her things to give to you, because she has a lot of cool stuff. Like makeup and jewelry and perfume that smells really good, but she said no, because Makayla and Brooklyn both don't want you to have presents because I guess they don't like you as much as me and Wes, but, she gave me this little, tiny packet of sugar, and she said that I could tell you that I'm giving you sugar because I think you're so sweet like sugar, and Makayla's giving you a coffee gift card because she thinks you're bitter like coffee." It wasn't a line that Holly would have been able to come up with on her own, but she didn't even think about taking credit for it, and told the story exactly how it had went - Brooklyn's involvement and all. "Sooooo, with that in mind!" she said, as she pushed her letter aside and ripped open the other card now, she continued. "I'll read you Makayla's now. Just remember that it's not from me, even though it says it is, okay? Okay, so here it is:

'Dear Tony, thank you for letting me sleep over on Thursday. I promise it won't happen again, and I'm sorry for the trouble.'

And she drew a smily face, and then wrote 'Love, Holly', and this is a gift card to Starbucks so you can buy coffee or a cookie."
Finally, she was going to give Tony a chance to respond, but not before finishing with, "You like mine the best, right? Weston said you would!"

With another day of classes finished, Collin was glad that he had spent the break between classes earlier to complete the majority of his coursework that was due this week. He liked feeling secure and ahead of the game, planning ahead of time in case anything went wrong. His life was pretty mundane at this point, so the likelihood of anything ever actually going wrong or coming up to really disrupt his schedule was unlikely, but he still liked the feeling of having all of his responsibilities fulfilled. He didn't hurry home after his last class, and instead, decided to stop at The Drunken Puerto Rican for a late lunch. He liked the restaurant because he liked Tony and Weston, of course, but Collin had started going to the restaurant before he even realized that they lived in his building. He had stopped there one day after classes, and had developed a taste for their empanadas that no other restaurant could compare to. Today was one of those days where his taste buds just weren't going to forgive him for not making a stop there before heading home, and given that he hadn't seen Wes at all since Thanksgiving, after he left his apartment early on in the night, he figured that if his friend was there, they could use some time to catch up.

As he entered the bar, he quickly noticed Holly sitting at the bar with Tony, some patrons scattered about the place, and Sam tending to a table. He helped himself to an empty two-person table, and flipped through a menu, just to seem like he wasn't in a rush to have anyone come over and serve him, though he already knew what he wanted to order. As he sat, he wondered if he should have said something to Tony when he walked in. Was it rude not to acknowledge her? Not to thank her personally for that pie Wes had brought over on Thursday? Now, overthinking, he was able to convince himsel that it was rude, but as he turned his head to glance at her at the bar, she seemed too involved with Holly for him to get away with catching her eye to offer her a friendly wave now. Instead of allowing himself to grow anymore unnecessarily uncomfortable, he pulled out his phone and texted Weston to say, "wya? about to get my empanada fill".

Weekends and weekdays did not necessarily hold much meaning to Thomas, though he preferred to work during the week. That was when the stocks were open and he could see the immediate effect of his buying and selling. Not that he took big risks. Thomas was not a reckless man. He had a gift for numbers, but he was the type that would rather not take huge risks unless he could afford to absorb the loss so one wouldn't find him running around Wall Street like a headless chicken. It meant a lesser payout sure, but it also meant he wouldn't ruin his life due to one bad decision.

After a morning of being glued to the computer, Thomas decided to visit Tony's pub for a drink and some lunch. As he waited for a taxi, his mind couldn't help but turn to the end of Thanksgiving dinner. He and Sam had spent the night cheering Deja up after the party faded away and he ended up falling asleep on their couch. Since then, it had felt like Deja had been avoiding him. He got the feeling that she didn't like him seeing her so emotional. Say what you will about Deja, but she did not often show weakness in front of others.

When he arrived at the pub, he smiled to see a familiar face working there. He waved at Sam before taking a seat in the corner and opening up his laptop. He eyed his battery. Fully charged. Good.

Deja was trying to remain calm. Her father had called that morning explaining that he was going to be in New York City for a medical conference. It wasn't unusual for Deja to feel uneasy about seeing her mother, but there was something particularly disturbing about her father's sudden phone call. It wasn't like Dr. Bennie to make spontaneous plans, and he usually gave her a good two weeks notice before showing up in the city.

The relationship she maintained with her father was strained but it wasn't unpleasant. They still enjoyed each other's company and usually managed to get though a meal without ripping each other's heads off. Deja dearly loved her father, and he was truly one of the only people she felt an inkling of duty toward, but they were still at odds. There was just something about being the same room as him that made her feel small. Her father was a good man in respects to his profession and life's passion, but his personal life was always in the dumps. In some ways she wanted to fill that gap her father had in his life by becoming a social butterfly in NYC. Maybe then, after realizing that his daughter had successful and happy relationships, Dr. Bennie might accept her decision to go to medical school.

Just seeing her father's tired face would remind Deja of the disappointed she knew he had in her. It also didn't help that Deja's father was a novelistically complicated man. His whole life's story was something of a mess, and she could often sense his desperation for her to pursue a better life than he. He was a hard man, but only because he loved his work so much that he was absent either physically or emotionally. It wasn't until Deja showed considerable talent in science that her father started to say no to work and help her study or prepare for the next big project. Deja had always loved her father well, but their relationship truly blossomed when Deja found her own voice as a young teenager. Now Dr. Bennie finds Deja's sarcasm and bluntness as instrumental part of her bold personality. Dr. Bennie doesn't try to change his daughter, he just can't find reason in her abandonment of science and helping others.

With more thought than usual, Deja put on a sophisticated outfit. She needed to appear grown up and worth something when she would see her father later than evening. The shirt that was nearly unbuttoned down to her naval would inevitably find itself bottomed up when she would enter the restaurant to meet her father. Until then she had to find some way to distract herself. Struck with inspiration she went down to The Drunken Puerto Rican. Deja had no business being there, seeing as she wasn't going to eat anything and wasn't on duty until after dinnertime, but she figured she might find some friendly faces there.

After a short walk she entered the cozy bar to find a slew of her apartment buddies. "Hi all!" she said colorfully as she waved her hand, she mostly did this for Holly but thought it was fun to greet as many people as possible at once. It was then that she spotted Collin sitting by himself at a two person table. Deja instinctually joined him without asking. "Hey, babe," she said in a friendly voice. "How're things going?" she asked curiously as she leaned forward on the table.

Even from halfway across the bar, she could hear Holly babbling excitedly. She grinned as she turned away from her table, heading briefly back into the kitchen with her order. As she emerged, Holly was presenting Tony with something. Sam peered over Tony's shoulder to read it, grinning at Holly. "I think she'd be a fool not to like yours best, Holls," she remarked. As she glanced up to see if any other tables needed attention, she spotted Thomas waving at her and waved back as she started to adjust the strap on her heels. Some of the girls she'd worked with in the past would have thought her crazy for wearing heels for a waitressing shift when she didn't have to, but Sam loved them. They added a little something to her otherwise casual black top and jeans. And besides, at times she needed the added height.

Straightening up, she scanned the room. She knew from experience that, even in a chilled atmosphere like the Drunken Puerto Rican, it was always worth checking for impatient patrons. They were a pain in the ass to deal with, but dealing with them first made everyone's life easier. Thankfully, everybody seemed happy enough, so she headed on over to Thomas. "Hey, handsome. What can I get you? You know by now that everything on that menu tastes great, so I won't even offer a recommendation," she remarked, grinning at him.

"Hmm... Are you on the menu? You look delicious," he teased with a grin. He had been hoping that Sam would be the one to greet him. He had to say that she looked far prettier in her work uniform than she ever did on some old guy's arm. Maybe it was the smile. He'd take one genuine smile from her than a hundred fake ones. His gaze swept across the room. It was strange how almost everyone her lived in the same building.

"First of all, I'd take a Captain Morgan. Then, to eat, I will take the Big Quesadilla," he told her, remembering the meal he had the last time he was here. The quesadillas here delicious and the one he was ordering was big enough to fill him up all day. He looked at her thoughtfully for a moment before continuing.

"So, do you have any plans tonight?" he asked, trying to sound casual.

Tony watched Holly, smile indulgent, as she watched the girl rifle her things to get the envelopes from her bag. It probably should've been a bit harder for her to catch onto everything that Holly was saying, especially since the words were provided with a rapid-fast delivery that made Tony's eyebrows raise in genuine interest, but Tony at least was able to keep up with what the girl was trying to say. Despite the fact that Tony had already told Makayla that she was perfectly fine when it came to Holly and anything that pertained to the young girl, Makayla still felt the need to be formal and send a thank-you card for not throwing a bitch fit when Brooklyn let Holly go to sleep at Tony's place. The fact that there needed to be a card to represent the other woman's appreciation was enough to make Tony roll her eyes, but she watched Holly instead with rapt fascination. It never failed to bring a smile to her face, no matter the type of day Tony was having, to see Holly being...well, just Holly. She was sweet - genuinely sweet - and bubbly, and so darn innocent. Tony didn't remember having girls like that around herself when she was growing up. Granted, she understood that Holly was definitely older than she acted most of the time, but that made her want to indulge the girl all the more. Made her want to protect her. Just like she did with Weston.

She couldn't help but giggle, eyes bright with glee, as Holly read her own letter aloud, while setting out to get the girl her favorite drink. Most of the sodas and juices were considered mix-ins, so they kept them at the bar for patrons, all refill orders being brought to Tony once drinks had been finished and someone wanted more. She reached underneath, still focusing part-way with her smile on Holly, the bar to get a glass and pour both some ice and some of Holly's favorite drink. She had to actually laugh when Holly claimed, in the middle of her rambling, that neither Makayla nor Brooklyn liked her since they didn't want Holly giving her a gift, but definitely accepted the sugar packet while sliding the glass cup towards Holly. Taking what the girl presented and winking at Sam when her friend came by, Tony declared, "While I do in fact appreciate Makayla's card and will definitely be using this gift card one of these days, I will say that Sam and Wes are right. Yours is the best, hands down!" Pondering for only a moment, Tony made a decision and skipped over to her bag, which was behind the bar and inside one of the cupboards. She put her items away, smiling at the little decorations on the white envelope before hiding everything away. Back on her feet, her smile was back for Holly, and she made her way back to the girl. "I'll try to tell Makayla thank you some time soon. You hungry?"

Tony's reaction, coupled with the Shirley Temple that the girl slid in front of her, had Holly giggling with glee. Again, especially after Sam's reassurance, she only expected Tony to agree that her card was superior to Makayla's, and she would have had a million reasons for why Tony was wrong had she not agreed, but hearing it aloud made her feel even happier. She sipped on her drink, swirling it around with the straw in an attempt to pull up one of the cherries that had floated to the bottom, when Tony brought up whether she was hungry or not. She was hungry, but it was really her own fault. She qualified for free lunch, and because money was always tight and their SNAP benefits often ran out before the month was over, Makayla was insistent that she ate it. With most things in life, Holly wasn't very picky. She rarely ever genuinely complained about not having designer or even top brand name clothes, or not having a cell phone, or even not having her own bedroom. She had grown up in an environment where what she had right now seemed heavenly, so she wasn't a bratty kid. However, when it came to her food pallet, she definitely qualified as being picky. In a sense, her taste in foods mirrored her learning capacities in that they definitely seemed childish. Her go-to foods were chicken fingers and macaroni and cheese, and even though she would eat things beyond that, they were always very simple things like bagels, or cereal, french fries or grilled cheese sandwiches. Given that the meals at school weren't entirely healthy, one would think that Holly would do okay with what they offered, but she struggled even with that. Her lunch tray today had contained chicken nuggets, corn, a banana, and a container of apple juice. She drank the juice and had no problems with that, but it was very rare for her to even touch anything else on her plate. The chicken nuggets always had a rubbery, non-edible texture, the corn was watery and not something she would normally eat to begin with, and she didn't like bananas, though she would always put it into her backpack anyway to bring home for Makayla.

That was why by the time she got home (or to Tony's bar, since she did stop there sometimes on her way home with Wes), Holly usually was hungry and very grateful for whatever kind of bar food Tony had to offer her that day. Today was no different, but Tony's question reminded Holly of an encounter she had had with some girls in her English class the other day at school. Though none of the kids were outright mean to Holly (in a way that she could pick up on), they were all at that age where being cool trumped being nice, and since many of them recognized that she was flighty and a bit slow, to the point where it seemed too abnormal for their liking, none of them wanted to truly be friends with her either. They were nice enough for her to think that they were friends, as many of them would humor her conversations and all, but it would have been a stretch to consider them actual friends. There were a few kids who probably were willing to actually be friends with her, but interestingly, Holly could somehow recognize that they were weirder and didn't show interest in them like she did with the more popular kids. "Did you know that there's a place called... actually I forget what it's called, but it sells shakes that have so many cool things in them?" she said, referring to Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer. "I'm gonna go with Cara one day," she continued, though she hadn't actually asked Cara yet. Holly was used to just assuming that Cara would be willing to do cool things with her, especially when she knew that they costed more money, so doing it with Makayla was automatically not an option.

"And you can come too if you want, and I'm going to get the one that's all about cotton candy. It has strawberry ice cream, and whipped cream, and real cotton candy, and a lollipop, and rock candy, and pink and blue and white chocolate balls on it. A girl that I go to school with went there for her birthday with her friends, and now I really wanna go because when I went home Makayla let me look at the pictures of it on her phone, and it looks so good. I asked Makayla if she would come with me and she said only after I marry Bill Gates, but she was saying it as a joke because he's an old man so obviously I'm not going to ever marry him, but he has more money then a lot of other people in the world, because he's rich and smart, so that's one good thing about him. Since you're twenty-four now, are you going to get married soon? Do you have a boyfriend and does Wes have a girlfriend yet?"

Sam raised an eyebrow as Thomas offered to bring her out for dinner. As tempting as the offer was, she was really more in the mood for a night in. Dealing with people all day was exhausting at best, even when she was in as high spirits as she was today. At his offer of Netflix and chill, she laughed.

"You try making a move on me while I'm watching CSI or anything like that and see how that ends up for you," She warned teasingly, before laughing. "Thank you for the offer, but I am very much looking forward to my unsocial night in. It's going to involve face masks and my ugliest pyjamas and I am going to enjoy it. But you can always get a head start on your work so you'll be free to bring me out another night," she remarked, grinning at him. She liked Thomas. Maybe not to date long term, but a brief fling or a hook-up wasn't something she'd write off. For now, though, she wasn't going anywhere with it. He knew her past, and she wasn't totally sure how she felt about that. She knew that Thomas was a good guy and that he wasn't going to do anything with that information, considering they'd both mostly stuck to their promises of not mentioning it.

"I should really probably go, we do have other patrons. Don't work too hard, okay?" She said, winking at him as she walked away. She dropped the order up to the kitchen and went back to the bar to get his drink just in time to hear Holly asking Tony if she had any plans of getting married. She smirked, but didn't comment.

Makayla's life wasn't an average one overall, but right now, she was at a place in her life where her days were very mundane. She never really did anything exciting, and her goal most days was just to get through the day. During the week, she woke up, and sent Holly off to school. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays, she would go straight to Duane Reade after that, where she worked as a cashier. The other two weekdays she would either go back to bed and get a few extra hours of sleep, or run errands, since later that night, she would end up working at the club, usually from around eight at night until four in the morning. Usually, it was a mix of the two. If she was working during the day, Weston from across the hall was always gracious enough to walk Holly home with him since Makayla's work schedule conflicted enough where she couldn't be there. Though Makayla didn't like accepting favors from people, in fear of seeming like a leech, this was one that she couldn't reject because there was no way that she could trust Holly with getting home on her own. Holly wasn't stupid, but she was so easily distracted that the sound of an ice cream truck in the distance could end in her walking miles away without even realizing it, and since Makayla couldn't afford to pay for an extra phone bill right now, it was just too risky to let Holly wander around the city on her own. Even if she knew that Holly was taken care of with Wes, it didn't stop her from rushing the minute that she clocked out of work, to get to The Drunken Puerto Rican. She needed the help that the Garcias offered, but that didn't mean that she was interested in taking advantage of it for even a second more than necessary.

It wasn't surprising, but Makayla was a bit disheartened when she saw that the restaurant/bar was occupied by more than a few familiar faces. Among the strangers, she spotted Deja and Collin, as well as Thomas, and then a fleeting image of Sam disappearing into the kitchen. Deja and Sam worked here, and even though Deja didn't appear to be working currently, their presence wasn't shocking. Neither were Thomas or Collin's, really, but Makayla was reclusive enough to always hope that she didn't see anyone she knew. Part of it probably had to do with her introverted nature, but also, Holly's tendency to get involved in deep conversations with any and everyone that they knew, made the presence of friends and acquaintances somewhat unwanted at times. It wasn't like she was close with Thomas or Collin anyway, so she knew that she was only being dramatic, but then again, she was feeling extra anxious about dealing with neighbors after Thanksgiving. Truth be told, Makayla still had very little idea of what actually went on on Thursday night. She blacked out almost entirely, only remembering vaguely going to Cara's with Holly, and then deciding to take a Xanax. From then on, everything was literally non-existent in her memories. She had no recollection of joining Deja's group, or going back to Jesse's apartment, getting sick in his apartment after he had convinced her to take her bra off, and then walking back to her apartment completely topless and passing out on the floor of her bedroom. She literally didn't remember a single detail of that happening, and though it was almost better that way, not knowing made her even more anxious. Especially when Holly had somehow ended up in Tony and Weston's apartment. Waking up on the floor, topless and with the taste of vomit and liquor in her mouth was scary in itself, but seeing Holly's bed vacant was even scarier. Makayla was relieved when she found out that she was only at Tony's apartment, and though she still couldn't piece together how that happened, it thankfully all worked out to be okay.

Because of her utter mortification regarding the "what-ifs" of what might have happened that night, she had purposely spent the entire weekend at as much of a distance from her roommates as possible. She felt like absolute shit for the following two days, a hangover like one she had never endured before, but she still somehow managed to sit through the free activities that the public libraries in the area offered, to keep Holly entertained without spending any money she didn't have, and work at night. Now was the first time that she was actually seeing Tony since Holly was returned to her, and though in her mind yesterday, writing the apology note was going to be enough of an apology, now here at the bar, she felt compelled to say something aloud too. Especially since Holly was sitting at the bar, clearly all too content with talking Tony's ear off, and it only took two seconds of witnessing the scene to know that that was exactly what was going on.

"I hope you thanked her for that," Makayla said, commenting on the drink Holly was sipping on as she gave Holly's side a gentle squeeze from behind to announce her presence. She looked to Tony with a softer smile, considering not even mentioning Thursday night and just ensuring, once they left, that Holly had, in fact, given her their apology note, but at the last second, she decided against it. "And I hope that she thanked you for the other night. We both appreciate it." She meant that sincerely, even though she was sure that Tony would be nice enough to brush it off as being no big deal. "And thank Weston for me, please, for walking her home," she added, before looking towards Holly and giving her arm a squeeze, now. "We've gotta get going now, Holl. Tony has real customers to take care of, so finish that up."

Though Holly was initially slightly disappointed at Makayla's arrival, she didn't show it. As much as she enjoyed her time at Tony's bar, and as much as she could have stayed there for hours talking to people, she also loved Makayla. Makayla got annoyed with her far more often than Holly ever did with her sister, so she was definitely content; blissful, even, when she got to spend time with Makayla. At the very least, that was true when her sister wasn't bothering her to get her homework done, or clean up after herself, or rejecting Holly's suggestions that they go to the movies or to a cool restaurant that they couldn't afford. "Me and Tony are like twins who can read each other's minds, so I don't even need to say thank you because she knows I'm thinking it..." Holly wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but even she was well aware that a response like that, albeit funny enough to have her giggling to herself, wasn't going to fly with Makayla. "But! I'll say it anyway to make you happy!" she continued, quickly after. After taking a final drink of her soda, not completely finishing it but having as much as she wanted, she hopped off of the bar stool and looked to Tony with a wide smile. "Thank you so, so, so, so, so much for everything that I'm supposed to thank you for!" she exclaimed, already forgetting whatever it was that Makayla had made specific references to.

Knowing that she probably didn't have much longer to socialize now, Holly decided to make the best of whatever few minutes she had left, and while Makayla finished talking to Tony, Holly found herself wandering around the bar. Initially, she was going to approach Collin and Deja, but both of the seats at their table were taken, and that felt unwelcoming. The open screen of Thomas' laptop should have given her the same feeling, but it didn't, so soon enough, Holly found herself standing by the side of his table, nearly bouncing on her toes with the excitement that always seemed to be bursting out of her for no specific reason. "Hi Thomas!" she said, though she didn't give him a second to answer before launching into a conversation of her own. "Wanna know a secret I just heard about you? I was walking over here and I passed by Deja and Collin, and they were talking, and Deja told Collin that she really, really likes you. And that's going to be a big problem since my friend Sam, she's the girl with the blonde hair that kind of looks like Tinkerbell... she told me she really likes you too. You're not allowed to have two girlfriends in New York, so you might have to move to a different state... Utah, I think it is, because there's a show on TV about a man that has a lot of wives that Makayla said I shouldn't watch because it's weird, but if you moved there, you could join their family and you could be his husband and Deja and Sam could be more wives for him. What do you think?" What Holly liked doing wasn't something that she would consider to be lying, since in her mind, that had such a negative connotation attached to it that it was basically a sin. She had completely made up the story of Deja and Sam having crushes on Thomas, but, as her giggles throughout her story made apparent, she thought of the story as simply that - a story. Not a lie, just a harmless idea to make herself laugh. No harm, no foul, not even in the part of the story where she assumed that Thomas had no idea who Sam was, even though she knew good and well that he did. Holly was definitely quirky, and ditzy and a bit odd too, but she didn't mean any harm in it.

The last part of Thomas' response had Holly chuckling aloud. "You can move to Bikini Bottom if you want to do that!" She recommended with intrigue, making reference to the character Plankton who had a computer wife. "But I think you'd be better off with someone with real hair!" she chimed in a beat later, tempted to follow that up with a comment about how if he was really lucky, maybe he would find someone with red hair. She only didn't say that because by then, Makayla was standing beside her.

Maybe Makayla was one of those helicopter parents, or whatever spin on that you would use to describe her sisterly/legal guardian relationship with Holly. To some people, it probably seemed like that, because whenever Holly wandered away from her, Makayla's attention was no longer on whatever she was doing, or whoever she was speaking to, but on Holly instead. At home in the apartment, she wasn't that bad with it, given that she was slowly growing to embrace the fact that she and Holly had just as much of a right to be themselves at home as any of their other roommates, especially since they had been living there longer than most of them anyway. If Deja could throw parties and drink, then was it sinful to let Holly tell her stories about her day in a voice that was a bit louder than necessary? Probably not. Even at home though, no one could deny that Makayla always did as much as she physically could to keep Holly from getting into trouble or seeming like a nuisance to the others. When they were in public, she was far more watchful, and Tony's restaurant was no exception.

When Holly left her barstool after offering Tony a very Holly version of an apology, Makayla couldn't help her eyes from following the girl across the room until she reached Yhomas. Makayla didn't know him well enough to notice that he always carried his computer around, so seeing him there with it made Makayla assume that he was doing business. She knew that some people didn't have the energy or desire to talk to her goodnatured sister to begin with, but she was sure that that was even more true for someone busy with work. "Excuse me," she said someone abruptly to Antonia as she removed herself from the bar and reached Thomas' table. She offered him the best apologetic smile that she could before placing a hand on Holly's shoulder and giving her a gentle pull backwards. "Come on, Holly. We have to go, I have a surprise for you," she insisted, trying to use an enthusiastic voice as if that would somehow convince her sister that she had something for her that was worth leaving for.

"I love surprises!" Holly chirped, her eyes widening with excitement. Surprises were far more exciting than thomas, she suddenly decided, as she spun the situation from Makayla pulling her out of the restaurant, to her eagerly leading Makayla out of the restaurant. What's the surprise, what's the surprise?!" she asked with clear excitement in her voice.

"Oh, Lord, I forgot that show was still alive," Thomas told her in mock horror. He smiled slightly. His mood had been lightened by the teenager's silliness and he was a little sad to see Makayla lead her away. Deciding that the laptop made him look more antisocial than he wanted to appear right now, he closed it and lifted his drink to his lips. He looked over where Deja was sitting and lifted it up in a silent toast, trying to catch her eye to see if she'd like to sit over with him or invite him over. To tell the truth, he had been bored all day. He would kill for some excitement and Deja ad a way of making things exciting for him.

As he set down his drink, his thoughts turned to his brother. Yes, that was who Holly reminded him of. He was almost as excitable as her and seeing her with Makayla was a poignant reminder that he hadn't seen him in months. Mike was close to graduating now, wasn't he? Did Holly attend the same school as him? Probably not. He had squirreled away some money to pay for his brother to goto a private Catholic uptown. It was a shame. He'd have liked to ask someone his age to check up on him.
