When most people get to know Weston, they typically come to see him as this person who is easily likable, kind and even a bit funny if you count his occasional snark as something to laugh at, particularly during his retorts or jobs at his sister. He's genuinely a people person in that, despite his earlier dealings with bullies, it isn't hard for Wes to make friends. He's a nice kid who seems to care about anyone and he's trustworthy. While he doesn't exactly have all of the experience in the world to be someone that people go to for advice, it doesn't stop friends and family from talking their issues out to him and then asking for his input. Tony would lament that it has something to do with the earnest puppy dog brown eyes and his dimples, and Wes doesn't exactly deny it. At the same time, that's just who he is. Wes likes learning, whether he's learning from a text book or the small things about other people. Being the more quiet and almost unassuming sibling, Wes is so good at not being as center stage a personality that he's developed a rather perceptive eye. He's used to people watching from a young age and figuring out their small quirks and habits, thus enabling him to come off as even more empathetic as he has learned what another person does when they're nervous or uncomfortable. Wes is the type to easily sympathize with most people and want to do for them in any way they can, a leftover trait he and his sister developed from their late father. At the end of the day, if Wes can help in any way, then he does and he has the patience to deal with people a lot more than his sister.
However, just because it's easy to see Weston as open and engaging, it doesn't mean that he's - in any way - the former. Even people, mostly those at school, who claim that Wes is their friend don't know for a fact that he dislikes them or really as much about him as they think. Wes can be a lot more detached and private than people give him credit, often answering around more personal questions with such a charming dismissiveness that not many catch on to the fact that they didn't exactly get from him what they really wanted. Part of this stems from being only two of the cousins in the family with a set goal in life that's actually achievable, thus entitling Wes with people who think they know him and his own desire to keep something to himself. On the other hand, it's also because he likes knowing about everyone else without having to give too much of himself away, particularly if he has to use what he has learned about others against them and wants to remain safe. It's not to say that Wes is some secretly evil person, but after being bullied and used by a friend he trusted, there's a hardly a relationship Wes has gotten into that he didn't maintain some control or two steps ahead in. He can be very fixed in his every day life and stubborn to the point of annoyance when people try to tell him he's wrong about something. A lot of this definitely stems from being quite used to getting his way growing up, even from Tony, and even if he would deny it if called out, there's a bit of a snob inside of Wes. Though a relatively good kid, there's an underlying sense of superiority in him as he's used to being at least one of the smartest minds in a room, thus giving him the illusion that he's definitely more knowledgeable than most people he lives around. He doesn't walk around bragging or anything, but there definitely was a sense of entitlement and stubborn attitude when he first moved in the apartment when Wes thought they should have kept their well-to do house.

The fact that the very first thing Weston did when coming into this world was be the result of an infidelity still burns him, but it's also humbling considering the fact that his father's wife didn't request that he be sent away. Upon finding that the boy's mother pretty much abandoned him, the woman - who had miscarried her own boy months prior - took him in as her own. He's grateful to this day for her ability to cast away her own hurt and anger for the sake and survival of a child that was not her own, and the simple fact that she would have - had she lived - gone about his life treating him like her own. It sucks, then, that the only thing Wes even remembers about her is her perfume and that's only as it is a comparison to the scent he knows as Antonia's. Considering her mother died when he was only three and Tony seven, the main female figure and the only one he saw as authority for him was Antonia. Sure, there were aunts and the rest of his family didn't exactly leave them to their own devices once his adoptive mother passed, but it was Tony who fed him caldo during the winter nights followed by sneaking in some chocolate chip cookies before bed, Tony who read him bedtime stories and curled up with him until he fell asleep, Tony who jacked up Dean Moreno for having taken Wes' homework twice and ripping it, and Tony who - even though she herself had developed a habit of skipping school - never failed to pick him up after school so that he could eat chicken tenders at the bar and do his homework. Wes can acknowledge that his dad hadn't exactly been neglectful; he was quite involved in both of their lives and they were a family. They showed out with food on the holidays, his Dad hung up a lot of his drawings and accomplishments around their childhood home, and he was often assured that it was his Dad making brunch on those Sundays after Mass. But growing up, even if he acts dismissive or embarrassed about it now, Tony had been his hero.
But there were some things Tony couldn't save. Like their home and their father. Not like she could have done much for the older man considering how much their dad smoked cigarettes. It was how he handled stress, Wes had learned later. Tony handled hers by being reckless and partying and drinking. Wes? He buried himself in academics. In a way, he had to. One of them had to get into a career field that was going to get them money and from the second he was old enough to understand all the utensils his primary physician used, Wes wanted to be a doctor and he vowed to work hard. He also wanted to cure his dad, but being a high school did when your dad has stage four lung cancer (and Wes still suspects that his father had known about his cancer for longer than he wanted to admit) does put a damper on things. It forced Tony back into the fold as she had started to focus on herself with the reserves, which Wes feels slightly guilty about and blames his dad for. If the man had stopped smoking like Wes asked years ago, or at least gotten himself help when he first started getting sick, Wes was pretty sure Tony would've been an active duty soldier, and not had to bear the mark of a reserves soldier. Either way, she had put her all into trying to keep their family home and Wes even started working, but again their dad hadn't informed them that he had gotten behind on mortgages and before long they had to let it go. Tony had considered taking out a loan, but despite his strong desire to stay, Wes begged her not to. He understood she got benefits, but he figured that the house had stopped feeling like a home awhile ago. So they found an apartment last year and it's still school accessible, and Wes still gets to see the rest of their family, so he deals with it.
