A week ago... A hidden bunker in Oregon

Thud!

Thud!

Thud!

Three darts came to a stop on an old dartboard. Nowhere near a bullseye, but Alexis didn't care. It was a slow patch and Alexis was losing it to the dullness of not having something to do. She let out a sigh and headed out of her underground fortress...
A wind from the west brought the smells of the ocean into Alexis' nostrils. Before her glowing cyber eyes she looked out over the Oregon coastline. Waves crashing against the coast while amazing to behold didn't cure Alexis's boredom though. But then her cell rang...

"Hey Alexis i got something right up your alley!" came a man's voice over the cell.

"What is it?" Alexis asked in a bored voice.

"Well, well don't sound too happy love..."

"..."

"Ok, ok! Some bigwig named Theresa Wyn runs Wyntech Industries right.. Well i hear she's looking for a bodyguard to protect her rich ass while she stomps on the little man...or whatever the hell CEOs do these days...."

Alexis let out a sigh. "Any job is good at this point... Let her know i'm in..."

In a Plane to New York...Last Night

After a week of interviews and background checks Alexis was finally heading to meet her new boss. The vetting had been a pain but Alexis knew how this game worked.. you could never be too careful with choosing who you hire to protect you.
A lady in a fancy dress sat across from Alexis. "We will be arriving a little after midnight. We have a room set up for you to spend the night. In the Morning you will meet Miss. Wyn." She said.
Alexis nodded and drifted off to sleep.

A little after midnight Alexis was awoken by a shocked gasp. Rubbing her eyes she woke up and focused on what the others where looking at. On the plane's TV was a news report of a terrorist attack in New York City.

"Change of plans Miss Graves... We will be heading to a private airstrip Miss Wyn is heading there as we speak...I'll let her Explain the rest when we see her."

Wyntech Industries Airfield somewhere in New York... Now

The plane set down on the runway and soon Alexis was finding herself being ushered off the plane...Soon she would meet her new boss, but her mind was still drifting on the news of the terror attacks...

The world was going to hell yet again Alexis could feel it.

The rain was coming down heavy on the airport landing strip. Wyntech employees rushed to do checks on the jets and other aircraft that were stationed there, getting some of them into hangars, partly out of fear of the recent events that had just occurred. As Alexis was ushered down the runway towards the main airport 'terminal', armed guards also seemed to be hurrying busily across the tarmac. Some seemed to be doing security checks, others seemed to be getting debriefed. Other men and women who had been brought in as part of the security team Miss Wyn had hired.

Then, coming from the terminal building, a group of guards and attendants could be seen walking in the direction of Alexis, and the other guards. A woman, wearing a red dress under a black trench coat (made for the rain), was being protected under a row of umbrellas carried by attendants. As she made her way around the runway, she greeted each of the guards personally, extending a firm handshake to each before they were given their orders and ran off to accomplish them.

Finally the group made their way to Alexis.

The woman in the dress, who's blonde hair was currently being worn down, approached Alexis, a dry, professional smile being worn on her face. "You must be Alexis I presume?" The woman said with a firm, yet neutral tone. "I'm Theresa Wyn, the reason you're out here freezing in the rain." Her face showed some sympathy as one of her attendants went to Alexis to hold an umbrella above her as well.

Theresa extended her hand to Alexis. "It's pleasure to meet you. Your reputation has preceded you, in good ways I assure you." She eyed up the woman in front of her, an almost surgical gaze hovering over each cybernetic piece that was a part of Alexis. "Seems like you've been in at least some good hands. Hopefully I'm not wrong about that." The look of sympathy was there again as Theresa locked eyes with Alexis. She wanted Alexis to know that in this world, if you had a problems with cybernetics, Theresa Wyn was the person to talk to. Period.

The cold rain didn't bother Alexis in the least she did live in Oregon after all... What did bug her was the waiting...

As Alexis watched Theresa Wyn walk up with her army of umbrella holders it was hard not to laugh as she got pictures in her head like out of those old movies where the witch would melt if even a drop of water hit her. But though a crooked smirk crossed her face for a moment she stayed silent and businesslike as Miss Wyn made her way though the other hired guns.

Alexis gave another smirk as the attendant placed the umbrella over her. She took the offered handshake returning it with a firm but quick one of her own. She listened to Miss Wyn and when she was done speaking Alexis turned to the attendant.

"You are not needed.." she said coldly to them before turning to Miss Wyn. "I'm sure you have done your homework on me... But I can assure you my cybernetics had the best and most trusted hands i know working on them... My own... as well as the best of the military engineers.. of which i'm sure you know I was one I assure you all my parts both cyber and flesh are at peak performance. So with all due respect Miss Wyn I don't need your sympathy. I'm here cause you have a job you need done...So please Miss Wyn how about we cut to the chase and you tell why I'm here."

Theresa cocked an eyebrow, a little surprised by how forward Alexis was. Miss Wyn chuckled lightly to herself, a few of the attendants looking a little uncomfortable themselves. "Apparently I didn't learn everything about you." She smiled slyly as she nodded to some of the attendants. About half of them began to walk back towards the terminal to carry out other, more important tasks available to them. The rest of her 'entourage' (her security) remained.

"Let's get to business then Miss Graves. I've brought you in to act as protection for the press conference I'll be holding in a few hours. But with the terrorist attacks I'm assuming you have already learned about, this is going to get more complicated." Theresa sighed, her face taking a more serious, annoyed look.

"Firstly, you'll have to keep an eye on any protestors that might show up. People that don't like what our company does, or wants to do. I hope you understand I do not want you hurting them, as much as it is possible to avoid. Additionally, we'll need you to keep an eye out for any suspicious persons and activities." Theresa pulled out a datapad and showed the screen to Alexis, a blueprint being displayed on it, which she began to point to.

"The area directly around the stage, and the audience area, is where I'll want you to be stationed. It's going to mostly be reporters, politicians, and executives from other businesses, but we can't be certain a threat won't slip through. Once the conference is over, you'll be helping to escort Wyntech employees and myself out of the building, and dealing with crowd control."

Theresa looked Alexis in the eye once more, placing the datapad back in her coat. "Nobody could have predicted these terror attacks, and no one can predict the next one. So let me ask you here and now Miss Graves, because I hate last second changes; are you still up for this?"

Alexis studied the blueprint as Theresa spoke. She quickly found and memorized every exit and every possible angle of attack burning a mental Image of the blue prints into her brain. As Miss Wyn finished Alexis looked up and nodded "Seems simple enough... I'm in... though I have a few things. First off arms and armor will you provide these? I have a contact here in the city that already as an order ready for me but I know some companies have a strict uniform for their guards. Second I would like to meet the rest of the team."

Alexis paused for a moment. "As for the terrorists... I'm not sure if i buy the Jihad shit... it is almost a bad clichΓ©... Maybe it is a bunch of Allah freaks...but my gut tells me it is just a front...But no need to worry come protesters, terrorist or damn aliens for that matter they won't get to you on my watch."

There was a pleased smile on Theresa's face, glad she wouldn't have to scrape around last second to get a decent guard to fill in for Alexis. Last second changes always complicated things.

"Well Miss Graves, as professionals in your field, I trust each of you to understand your strengths and needs best. If you have weapons available, then by all means use them, but we can also provide weapons if you need, at no cost to yourself. As for armor and uniforms, that's optional. Since you're not a full employee of Wyntech, you're not expected to wear any Wyntech security uniforms. However, they are available to use should you desire. Right now, we are comfortable letting the world know that we have highly skilled in-house security services at our disposal, but that we're also willing to bring in new talent, some of the best in fact. Keeps us less... Predictable."

Theresa gave a sly smile at the end before answering the rest of Alexis's other request and thoughts. "You can meet the team as soon as you like. Each team acts seperately, and yours will focus primarily on the auditorium and escort. You'll be connected through com-links to several handlers that will act as your eyes and ears around the property, providing you intel as needed. You'll learn more about that soon. That said, you can either meet the team now, or in a few hours if that's best for you. On that note, we should make our way over to the terminal." Theresa turned and gave a subtle hand gesture, indicating for Alexis to follow.

As they made their way over to the terminal, Theresa couldn't help but chuckle slightly at Alexis's other remarks. "I see you have a bit of skepticism. A healthy dose mind you, good for keeping the mind sharp." She gave a grin and courteous nod to Alexis. "And I do appreciate your commitment as well. But I should be clear, when it comes to aliens, mutants, and monsters, the big bonuses go for live captures Miss Graves." Theresa said jokingly, but with the tiniest hint of seriousness.

Washington D.C. - FBI Headquarters

Peter's mouth hung a little looser now that he had seen what was unfolding on TV. Strong words from the head of Nobis himself, and the beginnings of a breakdown in the Republican and Democrat parties to boot. The President was already making his speech about the government shutdown, had some very angry, pointed words about the 'betrayal' by Victor Bentley, but the President himself seemed quite a bit shaken by the whole ordeal. Peter wasn't usually surprised, but this certainly had done the job. A slight grin grew on his face, as Peter found it hard not to be a little impressed by the gusto of everything that was occurring.

A couple coworkers were whispering about what had happened already, others were getting more vocal. 'Office chatter' you might say, with some people already getting their 'about time', 'this is how the end starts', and 'what a complete traitor' remarks out in the air. Thomas remained quiet himself, mostly just observing everyone and playing the 'active listener' rather than the 'active talker'. He wasn't about to lose his job over actual politics becoming office politics.

Peter just smirked, not bothering to say anything to anyone himself. He put his cigarette out in the cold remains of his coffee, and made his way over to their interesting guests. It was time to get some work done.

Once Peter was in the interrogation room, he closed and locked the door, and spun a chair around on the side of the table opposite Xander and Bashemath, sitting down and facing them directly. "You know, I find you two incredibly interesting." Peter said with a slight smirk. "Both of you could have done all kinds of damage already. Maybe not kill every one of us, I mean we might even take you down, but I feel like in certain circumstances that wouldn't matter to you. All that, and you've chosen not to be a threat."

The man chuckled as he poured a glass of water for himself from a jug that was sitting on the table. "Feel free to have some if either of you need... Or can I guess." He took a sip, set the cup back down, and stared at them a moment again. "You see, why I find you so interesting is that I actually know you're not going to cause me any trouble. Let me be clear; I don't just feel this, or suspect this, I KNOW you won't, and not because you're afraid." Peter scratched at his chin slightly, giving it a rub as he took a moment to contemplate. "You two are actually choosing not to cause trouble by your own choice. I know that for a fact. So tell me... Why are you choosing to do this?" Now Peter's tone was serious. As serious as his question was.

"Capability and motivation are two different things, detective," Bashemath began to answer, rather quick to the draw, yet maintaining her jovial smile. It had become something natural, to smile in the presence of people, to most this gesture would be received as comforting, if not forced, that is, or to guise malicious intent. She had no reason to lie, nor the capacity for cruelty. "To me, there is no 'acceptable loss.' The risk of exposure outweighed the well being of the overall entirety. I didn't get caught because I made a mistake, I made a choice to become involved, and now I'm here for it, because it represented the least overall damage and better overall outcome. Additionally, your partner was in a compromised state, I couldn't very well compound his condition with a struggle." She spoke rather rather passionately and sincerely, no break in her voice or twitch of the eye.

"I was told not to," Xander spoke rather factually. As always, his voice was virtually emotionless and resonant, contrasting starkly against Bashemath's pleasantries and soft voice. "She chose to attempt rescue, despite risk, risk I made aware to her, and she chose to not struggle against capture, again, my choice would have been incapacitation or retreat. I can question it, but I cannot oppose," he continued, but his tone shifted slightly as he finished. "I am faulty, and thus my logic requires that balance."

"That isn't to say I'm innocent, either, of course, to be fair! But, I will not kill or maim to achieve my goals, I do adore my benefactors... it barely makes sense to harm the things you love!" she continued, impassioned in her speech, her voice raise some, but still quite civil in tone. She then leans back in her chair. "That being said, even I don't know my employer, so it isn't like I'm a security risk anyways. Even if I'm prone to tell the truth, I can't tell one that I don't know. My risk here is... minimal. They are... very clever," she said in a quieter tone, her smile breaking some. "But, I digress, I'm just... very contrary to the idea of causing pain or discomfort."

"A noble heart cannot suspect in others the pettiness and malice that it has never felt, a quote by Jean Racine our... progenitor used while she was in conception."

Peter leaned back in his chair, a slight smirk on his face. "Racine eh? I haven't seen or read much of his works, but what I do know of him is the regard of him being quite the wordsmith. In French at least." The detective took another sip of water. "Duty and Empathy. What an intriguing pair. You know Bash, Xan, I believe what you say." He swirled his cup around, watching the water roll gently around in an imperfect circle. "An employer you don't know... Your 'duties' and 'programming', even your compassion. What I suppose I find most interesting is what the two of you are, and what your employers are."

_____________________________________________________________________________

Outside the interrogation room, the other employees periodically dared to peek through the window to see what was going on.

"Freaky..." One of them said. "Really freaky."

"Yeah, what even are those things? Haven't seen any gene-freaks or magic weirdos that look like that."

"I know... Just ain't right. Stuff like that... Wasn't meant for this world."

Thomas heard everything being said, either passively or intently, but didn't contribute anything himself. He merely continued to clatter away at his keyboard, head down and unnoticed by the world.

_____________________________________________________________________________

The sly, knowing smile didn't fade from Peter's face. "I'm going to continue to accept that you're both being totally honest with me right now. So tell me then; what are the both of you employed to do."

The two grew deathly quiet for a moment after Peter asked his question. Bashemath couldn't lie, this was a fact, and Xander would have to follow along with Bashemath in whatever she said next. The perky smile on the former would fade a bit, knowing this was the matter she was not innocent of. It wasn't quite legal in a number of countries.

"Well, I suppose that is the crux of the matter, isn't it?" she said, stalling her response a bit, trying to decide on just how to answer that question in the best way possible. She glanced over at Xander, in hopes he would chime in, but he was still as a statue, and equally as silent. "Well," she uttered, as she looked back at Peter. "We've been taking in the gifted, through diplomacy if allowed, if not... well, with as little injury as possible, by us or to themselves. I don't know where they go afterwards, but I've been told several times that they are better off. Our targets tend to be those that have very little in life, little to go to, or nothing at all. I would... sincerely hope, that they receive accommodations for their induction into whatever it may be."
