Introduction

Image

"We don't know the origin of this pathogen, and we don't know what's yet to come. The people of the United States should advise themselves to find any quarantined zone stationed nearby. As a result of the events that have occurred throughout the course of the past few days, the disease has proven to spread rapidly. The CDC is working very steadily on a vaccine. All we need to do is stay calm and avoid any sort of panic... Fear spreads faster than anything. It's that simple. We will continue to give updates. Thank you, and goodnight."

-- Mark Daniels, Director of CDC. Broadcasted live (remaining radio networks) October 11, 2015

ImagePremise:

One contact. One instant. And a lethal virus is transmitted. A global pandemic explodes.

No one knew where it came from. Across all nations, the outbreak happened in an instant, leaving humanity in mass distress.

Throughout Minneapolis, Chicago, London, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and other major cities, the numbers quickly multiplied: one case became four, then sixteen, then hundreds, thousands, as the contagion swept across all borders, fueled by the transaction of saliva or a single bite from the infected.

The pathogen soon took over the minds of many, decomposing their brains into nothing more than an infected organ. The symptoms included the bleeding of the eyes, seizures, and brain hemorrhage. After the first basic steps of the transformation, the contagion mutated into something unreal; like a condition of rabies, the infected turned into violent, ravaged beings with rotting flesh, yellowing teeth, and unnatural limbs. Among the infected, not a trace of a conscience was left in tact.

The United States went into full panic. Lives were claimed by the infected as survivors fled to quarantined zones set up by what was little left of a government and its military.

As the pandemic carried onward at a rapid pace, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's researchers tried to mobilize and break the code of a unique biological pathogen as it continued to mutate. At the same time, amid a rising tide of suspicion over a potential vaccine—and who got it first—the World Health Organization worked through a network of connections that could lead them back to the source of what they were dealing with. No trace of a cure was found, and all hope was abandoned.

In the days that followed, much of civilization was destroyed by the infection, with pockets of survivors living in either heavily-policed quarantine zones, independent settlements, or nomadic groups.

Humanity still continues to evaporate as the infected wage war against all nations.

Now you're an official survivor. Will the contagion claim you?

Image
Plot/Beginning of RP:

It's been roughly a week since the outbreak has occurred. The military has managed to setup minor quarantined zones across the United States. As you fled your hometown, you've perused your way into a quarantined zone despite the mass destruction. The zone that you have escaped to is known as Zone 14 in Dallas, Texas, stationed in a once famed football stadium.

Medical camps, food lines, and survivors' tents populate Zone 14 amidst the chaos. When you arrive, you're immediately placed in a camp/tent with a group of other survivors (who will most likely accompany you throughout the roleplay.) Blankets, food rations, and water are passed out amongst the members. Hopefully you picked up a weapon on your way here.

As the days roll forward, a surplus of survivors fill the stadium. Will the stadium be overpopulated? Could someone infected get in? You only hope you can get through the night in the midst of the disarray...

The Infected
The first reports of the infection occurred in the city areas in the south. Individuals who worked in the cities were the first few to be infected. Once infected, the infection will travel up to the victim's brain. Once this happens, fungus will start to grow out of the victim's eyes and into the victim's face. It was stated that at a certain point in an infected's life cycle, when it feels it is close to death, it will find a dark corner to die and then the fungus grafts to the environment. When the body dies, it becomes skeletal and brittle as the fungus continues to grow and is capable of releasing infectious spores. It is also known that the dead can't be infected. It has also been stated that the people in the quarantine zones are relatively safe because the fungus needs tightly closed areas to spread. As well as being spread through spores, the infection can be spread through bites.

Stage 1: Runners
Runners are the first stage of the Infected who have recently entered their transformation. Since the eyes are first targeted by the fungus, runners have poor eyesight, but maintain many human instincts. For example, their moans are still human, just like their overall appearance. However, a way to tell them apart from normal survivors is their usually glowing eyes. Their body language is sluggish while they are passive and makes it seem as if they are trying to resist the fungus. Sometimes they do not attack at all, even when right in front of them. These non-aggressive runners will only attack if attacked first or when an object is thrown at or near them, thus losing control. This is described to be like a "sneeze", where the host will find it hard to control when a sneeze will occur at any moment and when you are about to sneeze, it is hard to stop from letting the sneeze go through. Runners are confirmed to be able to attack in packs flailing their arms trying to trample the survivor.

Stage 2: Stalkers
Stalkers are the second stage of the Infected. They have the vision and speed of Runners, although are more similar in appearance to Clickers. The most notable trait that defines the "Stalkers" is the croaking sound they make, and that they seem to have some use of intelligence or discretion when chasing a victim - they will strafe and take cover, eventually closing in on the victim, hence the name "stalker". Stage 2 may take place anywhere between a few days after the start of the infection (Stage 1) and up to a year (Stage 3). Stalkers are the fastest of the infected to spot a survivor as they will spot them usually before a runner will even have a chance to.

Stage 3: Clickers
Clickers are the third stage of the Infected that have had prolonged exposure to the fungus. They are completely blind due to the exposure of fungus from its face, but maneuver through areas capable of utilizing crude echolocation, which produces intense clicking noises that clickers are heard after. Clickers appear to be much less human than Runners, with faces that are skewed and scarred by fungus developed from their infected brains, out of their eye sockets and over and around the head. Clickers are dangerous and highly aggressive than Runners, but no longer resist the fungus any more because their humanity is currently devastated.

R U L E S:

1. Have fun!
2. Please, don't just randomly leave. You annoy everyone when you do that and screw up the roleplay.
3. Tell us in the OOC that you're either busy or have to go somewhere so you can't post. We'll try and work it out.
4. Be active in the OOC.
5. Swearing is allowed. This is an mature-themed roleplay. If you're not okay with it, I don't think this RP is right for you.
6. Be dramatic as possible!
7. I don't want any 2-lined posts. If you really don't have time to make a full length post, one or two paragraphs is fine. I'm flexible with this kinda stuff.
8. If you have a question or complaint, PM me or post it in the OOC. Feedback is also welcome there.
9. Let's try to keep this roleplay going. Check for updates and post as often as you can. (I know you have a life other than this site.)
10. Don't kill any members inside of your surviving group.

For the character sheet, you can do whatever you'd like. The following must be included in your sheet:
-Name
-Gender
-Age (18+)
-Personality (Also- maybe likes and dislikes? At least 2 or 3 paragraphs.)
-Appearance (Preferably a realistic picture. Actors are allowed.)
-Equipment (Weapons, backpacks, etc.)
-Physical description (What your character will be wearing throughout the RP)
-Where they were when the outbreak occurred. (At least 2 or 3 paragraphs. Can be in third-person, or just a description of what happened where your character was at the time.)

This list does not have to be in any particular order. Be creative with your sheet. Style it and change it up; colors, fonts, etc. Creativity is cherished. Don't make it look weak and sloppy. Can't wait to begin roleplaying! Check OOC for updates and where the plot is heading.

It's been nearly a week since the first biters started showing up, at first only a few, but as soon as they hit the cities... It didn't take long for the military to step in and start evacuating civilians. That's how I ended up in Zone 14, but not as a civilian, I escorted a convoy of trucks across the Texan border and into the stadium. It's not looking good here, too many people and not enough supplies to keep everybody fed for more than another week or two. We've lost contact with Zone 13 and the last air drop scheduled didn't come. I fear the worst is already upon Zone 14, how much longer can we pretend this place is safe?

Winter snapped his journal close, standing from the metal foldable chair that sat in front of a small table in the tent he had been assigned to. Tucking the small notebook into his back pocket he placed the pen he had been using behind one ear, rubbing his cold hands together. Even with his long sleeve shirt and thick pair of jeans, the fall air still made him shiver as he ran a hand over his head and then his eyes, rubbing the sleep away. Grabbing the heavy coat draped over the back of his chair he shouldered it on quickly and pulled up the hood as he zipped up the front.

Ducking outside through the tent's flap he squinted against the weak noon high sun that dared to peek out from behind a heavy rain cloud. It hadn't started raining yet, but the dark and forbidding skies were keen to release the water at some point. The stadium was at it's busiest, people bustling around like ants as food rations and supplies were handed out by men and women in army uniforms at tables. Beside each table stood two heavily armed guardsmen, their suspicious eyes looking out for any who may try and get doubles and also looking for any who showed signs of sickness.

Just like the many others around him, Winter searched for the shortest line, stepping in behind those who were also waiting. Feet shuffled forward slowly and people were served, though it seemed like forever, until Winter had come to the front of the line. Digging into his front pocket he pulled out his ration stamp card and slid it across the table. The woman there glanced over it and then nodded to a boy standing next to her, he disappeared for a moment and came back with an EMR package and a bottle of water, the woman stamping his card. "Next!" She called out, handing Winter back his card.

"See you tomorrow, Julia." Winter gave a charming smile as he picked up his food and water, winking as he scooted past the man next to him, stepping out of line. A shoulder bumped into his, causing his stuff to fall to the ground, the quickly walking person who had ran into him barely batting an eye as they stumbled on. "Well excuse you..." He muttered, glaring over his shoulder as he bent down to grab his stuff, brushing the dirt off.

((OOC:Hey y'all, I finally decided to post, I was tired of waiting. I tagged all the characters who have been accepted (I don't have the power to accept those who haven't, sorry) in hopes to get this thing going. Hopefully you haven't lost interest and will join me...Pretty please, with a cherry on top? Any questions can and should be posted in the OOC.

Thanks much,
Paint))

Lucy stood in the middle of a very large crowd. Was it the middle? Probably not. There is so many people here. It's more worse then going to the mall on a Sunday. She held her "Ration Stamp Card." tightly in both hands as she clutched it to her chest. She just stood there, stiff as a statue, as many people bumped and pushed her. Not that they care. She sighed heavily and watched her cold, mist breath in the air. It was very cold out and it wasn't even winter yet. She wishes she was in her warm bed right now. At least she has a warm, brown fall jacket and jeans to keep her warm...for now. Her dark blonde hair was kept up in a high ponytail as she...continued standing there.

Lucy had just arrived to this place yesterday. She was all alone in her abandoned home, confused and alone, when some people came and rescued her, claiming she'd be "safe" if she came with them.

Who can be safe anywhere at a time like this?

But, anyway, she listened. She was just assigned to her tent about an hour ago. She doesn't want to sleep with complete strangers. She was up all night, driving here from home, so she's pretty cranky right now. Still, she was letting people bump into her, not even saying a "sorry" because they're in a hurry to get their little TV dinner and bottle of water that they give out to people. It's not literally a TV dinner...it just seems like it is to her. So little food and so little water. It's too bad she has no friends to complain about the food here. She has no idea where all her friends are, anyway.

She tilted her head to the side to look at the commotion and why everyone was rushing over there. 'Oh yeah, this is what this thing is for.' She thought as she looked down at her stamp card. She heard something about having to go in and get this checked in order to get food and water. There was so many lines and so many people...and so little patience Lucy had. She huffed as she made her way through the crowd to one of the shorter lines. Better to get this over with. There was a group of three boys in front of her, looking a bit younger then she was, who were just fooling around and talking about nonsense. She began tapping her foot impatiently against the ground. The line was moving so fast yet so slow.

It seemed like forever until it was the three boys, who were still in front of Lucy yapping, to go up and claim their stuff. Next!" a woman yelled to the boys. Lucy stood on her tippy toes to get a glance at the woman over the boys shoulder. She was short, and had an impatient look on her face. Just then, Lucy noticed that none of the boys were even paying attention to her because they were laughing at some joke the one made. "Jesus Christ..." Lucy mumbled under her breath as she stepped forward and budged the three boys and swiftly walked up to the woman. The boys then noticed that she had budged them and started complaining, not that Lucy cared.

They gave Lucy a package, that she still has yet to figure out what it is, and some food and water. "Thanks", she said, this is totally going to be enough for me to eat. She thought. She kept moving along in line while carrying her supplies. She looked around once she was out of line, and noticed a man bent down, grabbing his stuff of the ground. Lucy began walking slowly away beside him, until she accidently slightly kicked a water bottle that he had probably dropped, as well. "Oops." She whispered as she bent down and picked up the water bottle. She then handed it back to him. "Here you go." She said quietly as she stood back up again. She could tell it was going to be a long day. She began her way to try and find the tent she was assigned to.

Jessica sat on her bunk, she still had some food left over from her journey here and was lucky enough to sneak it in without the soldiers finding anything, so she wouldn't need to go get any of the rations from outside, knowing her luck someone out there in that mass gathering of desperate people all bumping into each other, someone is carrying the infection and by now at least half of the people in the crowd would now have it.

Shaking her head at her own paranoia, Jessica reached into her rucksack and pulled out a small jewellery box and opened it, there was pictures of her friends and family, a few letters and a few bits and bobs of jewellery. She pulled out a necklace with a ceramic bunch of flowers on it, they used to be colourful but now they were a horrid brown, the brown of dried blood.

Jessica pulled her sleeve onto her palm and used it to wipe the necklace clean and before putting it back in the box. She reached back into her bag and pulled out a Ryveta Breakfast Biscuit and opened it, taking crumbs at a time as she slowly ate it.

Once finished her 2 biscuits, Jessica sealed up her bag, putting a small lock on it just to be sure no one could get into it, and grabbed her kukri blade and decided to explore the place she'd be calling home for the next while. She got up and made her way across the football field, avoiding coming into contact with anyone, she noticed a pair on the ground and panicked, quickly running off, even though they had just dropped their food. As she ran, she ran right into a soldier and fell right back onto her back.

"Ah!" she moaned as she landed.
"Sorry, ma'am." He lent over to help her up but she backed away from him and he gave her a funny look.
"Sorry, but for all I know you're infected, I can't let you touch me." She told him as she picked herself off the ground. "Hey, you don't know if they're evacuating anyone do you? Like tourists being sent back or anything." She asked him, hoping he'd tell her she'd be home soon but her just shrugged is shoulders.
"Sorry, ma'am. I don't think they are." Jessica nodded her head in defeat and turned around, walking away from him as she wiped away tears that were building up in her eyes.

Just as he had bent down to pick up his water bottle, the toe of a boot had kicked it out of reach, making his brows furrow in frustration. A delicate looking hand entered his vision as the bottle was picked up and handed towards him. Winter straightened up, adjusting the sleeve of his jacket as he took the bottle gratefully. "Thank you," His smooth timbre voice hummed through his chest. Winter watched as the woman hurriedly walked away, obviously searching for something...or someone.

With his interest piqued he followed after, jogging to catch up, tucking his belongings under one arm as he came to walk at her side. "I didn't catch your name. I'm Winter." The man introduced himself, outstretching a hand for her to shake as they walked. "You looking for something? I could help you find it...Since you gave me my water bottle back, most people would've run off." The lieutenant gave a warm and endearing smile, glancing around to make sure his surroundings were safe.

Most people who mingled within the crowds wore face masks and protective gloves. Winter usually wore a bandana around his nose and mouth but had it tucked under his shirt at the moment. Looking over his shoulder he watched as a woman fell, a solider offering her a hand up, only to refuse and scramble back. Winter lifted a brow in curiosity but didn't investigate any further, matching the woman's stride who was next to him.

She was obviously a civilian, new perhaps, explaining why she looked lost. It also didn't look like she had much supplies with her, just a bag. Winter didn't have much either, just the clothes on his back and a bag he kept under his bed, a small lock keeping the zippers closed. He had a hard time trusting people, especially in such a desperate situation like this one. Winter stopped walking, squinting as he looked towards the sky. A jet quickly rushed overhead, followed by two helicopters, passing by and heading on past the stadium.

Winter removed his hood, shading his eyes with one hand as he watched the planes disappear as soon as they had appeared. His head tilted slightly, ears straining for any noise, finding only the distant chopping of the blades of the helicopters against the air. With a shrug he turned back to the woman he had been walking with. "Well that was odd-" Before he could say more, the sound of gunfire from a few miles away, cut him off. There was a rumble through the ground, probably caused by the jet, dropping a bomb on a mass of infected.

It sounded too close...

Lucy kept her pace at a decent speed as she continued looking for her tent...Or rather, which way to go to get to her tent. There was so much commotion going on that Lucy couldn't even see where the paths were to turn. People continued bumping into her, not giving a damn as usual. Lucy tried to remember which number her tent was again. '13..? 14...?' She tried to remember when a man bumped into her shoulder while passing her and she stumbled backwards a bit. 'Ugh! How am I suppose to think when I have all these people--'

"I didn't catch your name. I'm Winter." The man she helped before, who was now at her side, introduced himself to her. She thought he would of forgotten about her by now. She tilted her head up a bit and got a short glance at him before snapping her head back down. She didn't want to bump into someone and fall over just because she is not paying attention to the people walking in front of her. "I'm Lucy." She said quietly and casually. Her eyes were still fixed on the people and things in front of her as she walked. She looked down at his hand that was outstretched for a hand shake. She was hesitant at first, but quickly reached over with her opposite hand and shook his gently.

"I'm looking for my tent I was assigned to when I got here." She said as she rubbed her temple in frustration. There was so much people, so much talking. Lucy just wanted to find her tent and go to sleep to get rid of all the noise. "I'm pretty sure my tent number is 13 or 14. Either way, they're probably beside each other so it doesn't matter." She said as she quickened her pace a little bit. She had no idea where she was going. She could feel her head throbbing and a headache starting to form. 'Great.'

Just then, that's when she heard the sound of what sounded like helicopters. 'What the...?' She thought as she curiously tilted her head up to look at the sky. She was too late to catch a glimpse of what sounded like planes, but she could still hear the chopping blades in the distance. 'Do planes fly over this way often...?' She thought as she tilted her head back down, looking at Winter and shrugging along with him. "Well that was odd-" But he was cut off by a loud gunfire that rang throughout the crowd. Everyone stopped, including Lucy, and looked in the distance where the gunshot was heard. Lucy turned her head along with everyone to see what was going on. Just then, an even louder noise was heard, almost deafening, as what seemed like a bomb dropped by one of the planes. Everyone started screaming and running around, but Lucy's ears were still ringing from the sudden sound.

Jessica watched as an aeroplane flew over the stadium, she looked back to the soldier as he watched the aeroplane, he looked just as confused as her. She spun around to watch as others had noticed the aeroplane and suddenly there was a loud bang and numerous gunshots.
"What was that?"
She whispered, the soldier grabbed her arm.
"Ma'am, please return to your tent and await further instructions."
His grip was strong and started to hurt her forearm as he started to drag her.
"Let go of me!"
Jessica yelled as she tried to yank herself free. Everyone was starting to panic and were all bumping into each other.
"Stop! Look around you idiot! Anyone in here could be carrying the infection, and they're all contained in a small space, the infection could already be in here!"
She yelled at the soldier and eventually broke free from his grip, he was then looking around and realised the ruth of her words. He then grabbed her hand more gently and led her away from the crowd.
"No!"
She pulled her hand away from his and started running for her tent.
"I have to get something!"
She ran into her tent and grabbed her bag, swinging it around, she put it on her shoulders and turned around to leave, when she noticed a woman lying on her bed, she was shaking quite violently.
"Are you okay?"
She asked, as she slowly stepped towards the woman and looked at her, she had a bite on her arm, right through the sleeve.
"Oh my god!"
Jessica muttered before turning to run, but she was stopped by another infected person standing in her way. He let out a bloodcurdling shriek and started a run at Jessica, who managed to dodge his grab and fall forward onto the ground, the infected fell over the woman and knocked her off her bed and started to bite her. Jessica crawled back up and ran outside the tent flap and out into the evening sunlight, the sudden light change blinding her as she tried to run back to the soldier.
When her eyesight adjusted to the light levels, she saw the guard waiting for her. She ran past another 2 people, recognising them, she stopped.
"Come with me!"
She called to them and didn't wait, she instantly made a dash for the soldier and started to follow him.
"Come on, hurry."
The soldier told Jessica as he led her up the stands.
"I'm taking you to one of the upper gates, if the infection gets inside. We evacuate whoever we can through the upper level gates and then travel to one of the other safe zones using military vehicles."

Re: Contagion

Hey, just thought I'd post something. Can't wait to get this going. :)

Re: Contagion

I'd be willing to lead the roleplay, I don't have anything planned for the next few weeks and check up on this site every hour or so. Of course, upon your return I'd be willing to hand the reigns back over to you. We all understand that the real life comes before the online life. No worries!

If its alright with everyone else, I'd be happy to take over during your leave of absence. If you want, you can PM me an outline of what you expect or just let me wing it till you get back. Up to you really ;)

EDIT: The longer this just sits here, the less likey people will join. We gotta get it up and going soon or it'll never take off.

Re: Contagion

@Aporia: Extra characters are always welcome. =)

Hey guys. Sorry I haven't been in touch. The internet has been as slow as slow can be. Expect a post in the morning. Sorry I couldn't get one in tonight because of the slowness of the situation. Hopefully things will clear up tomorrow. And since I'm leaving for vacation on the 11th, I don't know how I can stay in touch. =( One of you will probably have to lead the group instead of Ryan. What I was going to do was lead the group through America and into safety of a rebel group known as the "Fireflies" and all (like in The Last of Us) but I really don't know how I'm going to communicate in the RP when I'm gone. Would one of you be willing to lead the RP while I'm away?

Sigh. This is very frustrating. Sorry again.

Re: Contagion

Im just waiting for the introduction post so we can get this baby rolling... Ive been playing The Last of Us allllll day and I recently just watched Contagion, im so pumped up for this. You have no idea.

Re: Contagion

I see no harm in that, ~. If it fulfills you in some sort of way, I've no objection. Though, you'll have to wait and see if Evan returns the gestures.

Re: Contagion

That, my friend, is called a tilde. But I do see the undeniable likeliness between I and it. You, however, would have a character such as:

I had a question for you, if it wouldn't be too forward of me to ask. Could it be possible that our two very strong and handsome characters fell into a sort of a love-hate relationship? I love the idea of a shy computer guy like Evan and a very stubborn and persistent asshole like Winter just constantly messing with one another. I like to think of Winter as a homophobic kind of guy, but in reality it's just him trying to hide his inner feelings.

Let me know what ya think €

Hello! :D

You guys would have space for a black amputee priest. Yesh?

Re: Contagion

If you were a character on the keyboard, Paintpoint, you would be:
~

Re: Contagion

I did, yes indeed. Could you hear the absolutely heartbreak as I said it? XD

I admit I say quirky and rather odd things, I'm only fiddle farting around though, it's usually jibberish, haha just ignore it. I do.

Did you just say le Image

Re: Contagion

Pooooooooooooooooop! Stupid internet :{ Crushing all my tiny hopes and dreams into a fine ash. Lesigh, oh well, I can spend my night watching zombie movies and playing The Last of Us

Re: Contagion

@Paintpoint: Questions are a good thing! I'm glad you're excited. I'm guessing, since I created the roleplay and all, Ryan will most likely lead the group towards their main objective. And if there is any sort of conflict among the group, separation could possibly happen. That's pretty much the characters' decision, though. I'm giving the group as much freedom as they want. Do what you want to do! And you'll eventually find out where the characters will be heading when we begin posting.

Since you're so excited, I guess I'll just make an introduction post then! =)

EDIT: Crap. Internet just went down for the second time today. Really sorry- hopefully it will turn back on soon. Posting this from my phone. :(

Re: Contagion

Oh boy oh boy, I am so excited. I do, however, have a few more questions since you brought up the topic. I know we haven't even started but I am assuming there will be a leader of our group of survivors? (Ryan Anderson?) If that is so, is there a possibility of another rival group that-for whatever reason- separates from the main group? Also, where are the survivors ultimately trying to get to? Or are they just trying to find the safest place possible? Am I asking too many questions? Haha XD

Please oh please can we start tonight? Oh, I am just too excited to hold back from begging. <3

Re: Contagion

I'm glad you think so :)
I was worried the lack of photos would turn you off to it ^^; I just prefer people to imagine it in their heads, rather than being given a stark representation~

Re: Contagion

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been as active in the OOC. I've been busy the past few days. Anyways....

@Naught:I hope you will! =)

@DumbassArmageddon: Your character is great!

@MoonlightWraith: Jessica looks awesome!

@Paintpoint: I think infected animals might be a little more interesting...xD So, yeah, we'll probably stumble across a few in the RP.

So, after I collect all of the character sheets, I'll set us up with an introduction post. That might be tomorrow or the day after that determining on how many more character sheets I get. For now, does anyone have any questions about the RP? And just to clear things up for when we begin, it's been about a week since the outbreak and we're all wrangled up inside a football stadium in Texas. Can't wait to start!

Re: Contagion

I would love to submit a character for this.. ^^
