Amity Clarence

"Well, someone has to keep you lot alive."

0 · 229 views · located in Terejhsa

a character in “Corsair Knights”, as played by Robinwing

Description

Age: 22
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Height: 5ft nothing
Occupation: Ranger - Knight. She would jokingly answer William handler, but truthfully, she has worked as everything from a seamstress to a maid.

Appearance: Amity is a small, soft woman, with a big, big heart. She looks nothing like her brother, William, with her black corkscrew curls and darker skin, but they do have the same sparkle in their eyes. Amity is not lightly built, she is sturdy but soft, though she has little in the way of muscles. Her hands, however, are roughened from the various jobs she has taken. She has a distinct burn scar on the back of her left hand, shaped like a wobbly L.

Amity usually wears light and colourful, but simple and plain, clothes. Her usual outfit is technically her travel outfit, which consists of a plain white tunic, fastened at her waist with a yellow sash and a belt, from which hang a couple of pouches and bags to carry small things, and a quiver. However, she is always certain never to carry coin in such an obvious place, usually none at all if she can help it. Under the tunic, she wears a pair of black leggings and hardy leather boots. She will sometimes keep her bow slung across her back, but usually that lives in the wagon until she needs it. She doesn't wear a cloak with this ensemble unless the weather demands it. Her belt features an intricate buckle, shaped like a small shield emblazoned with a wolf, which looks to be more expensive than everything else she wears put together.

If Amity stays in one place for a while, she is overjoyed to break out her actual dresses. Her favourite is a lilac ankle-length dress, under a white corset that she embroidered herself with purple flowers, with the same hardy boots. She keeps her belt on at all times, only removing it when she is dressed for a formal occasion. Her formal dress is a forest green dress, covered in a floral pattern, which has elbow length sleeves and a skirt that just barely brushes the floor. But still, the same boots, though she'll usually clean them before wearing them to a formal event.

Personality: Amity lives up to her name. She is a friendly, easy going young woman, though she also doesn't take any nonsense. She's very good at reading people, and extremely caring, almost to a fault. She wants to make sure everyone around her is looked after and comfortable, but she doesn't really think to do that for herself right away. She is very down-to-earth and practical, she doesn't sugarcoat unpleasant things. She and William both share strong moral principles, a set of personal rules their mother taught them, that take heavy inspiration from one of the ancient knight orders that fell apart under the Genius' heel. Amity is a daughter of the earth if ever there was one, she has an immense understanding of nature, especially animal behaviour. She listens to the natural world around her, picks up on signals that others often miss. She also has a quirk that nature itself seems oddly biased in her favour, though she has no magic to speak of, animals are not alarmed by her presence, often trust her instinctively. Amity tries not to bother people if she has problems, though this is slightly hypocritical of her, because she will always try to convince people to let her help with their problems. She is steady and reliable, and a very good listener.

Amity has a habit of worrying about things, especially her brother, and what he might try to do. She doesn't like the Genius any more than he does, but she doesn't think just courage and sheer determination is going to change anything. Amity can be a little awkward at times, she has trouble curbing herself and her emotions, and is also a terrible liar. She doesn't hide things if she can help it, and it's obvious to all and sundry that she is hiding something when she does. However, if she feels like telling what she knows will cause undue pain, she will take it to her grave. Amity has never been much of a fan of cities, too much noise, too much activity, and everyone's always in a rush. People often comment on her use of a bow and arrows, but she has a laundry list of reasons why she, personally, prefers her bow over a gun, especially since she uses it to hunt for food.

Magic/Abilities: Amity has no magic, but she is extremely comfortable and capable in the wilderness. She has been taught various survival skills, and is a very good archer, however she has only ever used archery for hunting. Animals often do not seem threatened by Amity, and she is very good with them.

History: Amity and William have never stayed in one place too long. For as long as Amity can remember, they lived with their mother out of a wagon, with about 7 other small families forming a large nomadic family. While it didn't take the pair long to realise that William was adopted, they agreed at a young age not to acknowledge that fact, treating each other as they had always treated each other. It took much longer for Amity to realise that the way their family lived was not quite normal, that travelling from place to place in old wagons, hiding various antique trinkets, all baring the same coat of arms, amongst them, and practicing swordsmanship, despite the whispers Amity sometimes heard from passerby about it being 'outdated'. She and William had it explained to them when William turned 13, and have since kept the secret to themselves, as their mother and her parents before her did. All anyone needs to know, as far as they're concerned, is that their caravan trundles into town when it needs to, and leaves the same night.

What was the secret? That's for me to know, and you to find out!

So begins...

William sat in the front of the trundling wagon that carried himself and his mother, who was sitting in the back. Night was beginning to fall, bringing with it darkness, and a distinct gurgle from the region of the scruffy young man's stomach. The wagon they rode in was one of seven in the convoy William and Amity had been raised in. Each wagon was unique, personalised by years of use and wear, but it was easy to tell at a glance that they all belonged alongside each other. The occupants of these wagons were a mismatched group, yet looked at each other and acted as though they were a close knit family. As far as they were concerned, such was the truth.

Amity walked beside the scruffy grey clydesdale that pulled the wagon, whom was lovingly christened Salty when he joined the small group of wanderers. The other horses were similarly well loved, but well exercised as well, and all in need of a trim soon. Amity broke off a ways, until she stood on a rocky bluff looking down the path the wagons were on.
"We can't get there before dark." She called back over her shoulder, jogging back over. She hopped into the wagon through the front, forcing William to dodge out of her way and yell in teasing annoyance. Inside the wagon was draped in heavy blankets to ward away the chill of winter nights, and pillows to soften the ride. It also contained wooden boxes and various necessities and knick knacks, including Amity's bow. On the back steps, Amity and William's mother tapped her chin.
"Then it'd be best to set camp before it gets too dark." She stated.

William took Salty's reins and halted him, while Amity darted past her mother out of the back of the wagon. She went up the line, relaying her mother's orders and helping people organise themselves. The wagons pulled off to the side of the road, using the bluff Amity had stood on as both a lookout post and a shield to the elements. They were arranged in a semi-circle, open end facing the road, horses tied so that they were safely between the wagons and the bluff. A fire was built in the centre, thankfully just before night fell in earnest, and the wanderers sat around. A few children soon poked their heads out of a couple of wagons, before joining their parents around the fire.

William had taken first watch, sitting up on the bluff, sharpening his sword. He stared at the distant lights of the city, and could have sworn he could hear shouting on the wind. He shook his head, thinking it was just his imagination, and tried to resume his watch. However, he couldn't help but think about where they were headed.
"If I can get this close without you noticing, I hate to think what someone could do to the camp before you stopped daydreaming." A familiar voice teased over his shoulder. Surprised, William leapt to his feet with a startled shout, and swung his sword at the empty air Amity had wisely and quickly vacated. She stepped forward again as her brother regained his breath, and sat down beside him. William sank back down to his seat.

"What's got your head full of cotton?" Amity asked. William looked away and shrugged. Absently, he started sharpening his sword again.
"I'm just excited. This whole knights thing, finally getting a chance to give the Genius a piece of our minds. I can't wait." He answered. Amity sighed deeply.
"You and I both know it's never going to be that easy..." She warned. William grinned at her reassuringly, and finally sheathed his sword.
"Of course it's not, but we'll figure it out." He stated, giving his sister a one armed hug round the shoulders. Amity gave him an uncertain look, before glancing back at the campfire. William followed her gaze, and his face became solemn.
"Edgar's missing a hand, Gerda and Jim have the twins to worry about..." Amity muttered.
"Even mother is getting too old for this." William added. Amity leaned her head on her brother's shoulder and sighed in concern. The plan was for them all to offer their services, but it was seeming less and less viable by the day...

"William, Amity!" Came their mother's voice, from the foot of the bluff. The siblings sat up and looked down at their mother, who gestured for them to come down to her. They slid down, and looked into their mother's grim face. She shifted her weight with a frown on her dark face, and the siblings glanced at each other out of the corner of their eyes. They were nervous about this undertaking too, but their mother acting nervous about it made it seem... All the more real.
"Listen, you two..." She began. "We're not sure how legitimate these messages have been, and from what we've seen, it's worse than we thought."

She was right, they'd seen the suffering of the people, even so far into the Genius' territory. It made William's blood boil, and upset Amity, that she could take control of a people with promises she never intended to keep. Their mother raised her head to look the two in the eye.
"I want you two to scout ahead. Make sure that we aren't heading into a trap." She stated. William and Amity caught on to her implication almost at once. The two of them were the best placed and most capable to actually fight this battle, but everyone else needed more time, if they were able to at all. Sending William and Amity on ahead allowed the pair of them to at least get a head start in the fight with the Genius.

The two of them went to where the horses were tied, as their mother explained to the rest of the caravan, who sat around the fire and had certainly not eavesdropped on the whole conversation, what they were doing. The siblings took a horse named Butterscotch, an equally shaggy golden mare. They'd learned to ride double from a very young age, and Butterscotch wasn't a small horse, so there were no problems with Amity climbing on behind her brother. for a moment, Amity felt as though she'd forgotten something, but then her mother appeared at her knee holding up her bow and quiver. Behind their mother, the rest of the caravan had gathered to send the Clarence siblings off to the city. In turn, they gripped the pair's hands and offered hopes for good luck and well wishes. The smallest member of the caravan, a three year old girl named rini, tugged on Jim's trouser leg until he lifted her to his shoulder. She thrust out a handful of wildflowers, which she'd been picking under Edgar's watchful gaze. Amity accepted them with a smile and put them in her bag.

Finally, William and Amity's mother placed a hand on Amity's knee, and gazed up at the man and woman she'd raised. With her other hand, she gave William a sealed envelope and a note of where the two of them were to go.
"Be careful." She warned in a low voice. They both nodded, and finally urged the horse to carry them towards the city. They waved over their shoulders at the caravan for as long as they could see it, before they focussed on the way forward, and the city spreading out before them. It didn't take them long to find themselves in the dark streets of the city, well after dark. Amity shifted nervously, watching every shadow they passed, while William was singularly focussed on finding their destination.

The city made Amity nervous. It was too still, no rustling leaves or singing birds to reassure her. The only sound she could hear in the darkness were Butterscotch's hooves clopping heavily on the cobbles, and they seemed louder than thunder in the quiet. She wrapped her arms around herself, for comfort. William glanced briefly back at his sister, frowning at her discomfort. He shook his head and turned back to their objective. Finally, the shadowed roads and alleys led William, Amity and Butterscotch to the building the note told of.

A black horse stood before the gate to an old, but impressive building. The horse turned to look at the approaching group curiously, and Amity swung herself down off of Butterscotch's back. She reached a hand out for the horse to smell, carefully not looking directly at the beast.
"Hello there, friend." She murmured soothingly. William knew better than to approach while Amity was doing this, so hung back with Butterscotch until his sister was done. The strange horse still seemed slightly wary of them, but he didn't spook when, after a nod from Amity, William dismounted and tied Butterscotch next to him. With the mare secured, the Clarence siblings finally began approaching the building.

They were surprised to find the door open, but with a glance at each other, both of them stepped inside. As they continued, now following the sound of voices, William's hand slowly came to rest on the pommel of his sword, and Amity's in the crook of his arm. The voices that floated through the building seemed to be the voices of a few woman, and a man. A room opened out before them, one which contained a number of people. Three women stood before, presumably, the man they had heard, who was covered from head to foot. Amity hung back slightly, as William stepped forward. He bowed respectfully, just as his mother had shown him when he was young.
"William and Amity Clarence, representing the Loup Caravan?" He introduced, indicating himself and Amity in turn.

Nora watched as one of the robed figures came over to her and Jackie, offering a handshake. Although the man stood taller than the artificer herself, she firmly shook his hand without hesitation. Perhaps being accepted into this group wasn't going to be such a complicated matter after all.

Just then, another two people - a man and a woman - entered through the still open front door of the building. Luckily, they weren't guardsmen, seeing as they decided to introduce themselves rather than start shooting at everyone present. Nora quickly racked her brains for any knowledge of the Loup Caravan they spoke of. Were they expected guests of the Corsair Knights?

Jackie brushed the handshake aside, only offering a muffled "Hi." from the corner of her mouth. There was no reason she should be buddy-buddy with some stranger who, truth be told, was coming off as slightly patronizing and just a little bit too eager to make acqauintances. Or perhaps that was just Jackie's grump talking. Either way, Jackie wasn't feeling hunky-dory being forced to wait out this charade of friendliness.

As Jackie was about to cut to the chase, two more people entered the archive. It wouldn't have bothered her so much if it weren't for...

"Geez, so much for a closed meeting. Why don't we go ahead and invite everyone and their dog while we're at it?" The thief commented with emphasized sarcasm, nodding her head in the direction of the door that was so clearly opened it may as well be waving flirtatiously for prying eyes to come take a closer look. Honestly, some people could be as dumb as a post.
