Description

Nora Belenko

Full Name
Nora Elizabeth Belenko

Race
Human

Gender
Female

Age
Twenty-six

Occupation
Former Royal Artificer, now using her skills to do odd jobs for local freedom fighters.

Appearance
Standing at 5'11", Nora is quite tall for a woman. While she does have a somewhat slender figure, she also has some lean muscle that proves she is no weakling should it come to a fight. Her face is framed in snow white hair often tied back to prevent it from obscuring her vision, and her eyes are a slightly pale shade of green.

Her manner of dress is conservative, to say the least, although it could be argued that it helps keep out the cold weather. Her attire seems to be supplemented by gauntlets and greaves, along with other small pieces of light armour protecting vital areas.

Personality
From a glance, one can tell that Nora is of a more reserved disposition. Having been taught to keep her wits about her in a court full of corrupt and greedy nobles, Nora is the sort of person who is slow to trust others. She is quite proud of her roots, and does not take kindly to those who would insult her lineage or her homeland. However, as aloof as she may be, she sincerely wishes to one day be as good a ruler as she is an inventor, once she inherits her father's land.

Gear
Most of Nora's possessions are in a small backpack she carries with her, most notably her toolkit, some gold and a few keepsakes from home. Asides from this she carries a sword and a revolver, a more than adequate means of self-defence against brigands and the queen's henchmen.

Skills
As one of the greatest Royal Artificers in the queen's court, at least until relatively recently, Nora is extremely skilled in building and repairing all manner of machines and gadgets. Being of noble blood, she has been taught in politics and the ruling of a country to some degree. She's also a capable fighter with either a sword or a pistol. As for magical power, however, she has none to speak of.

History
The Belenko family bloodline originally ruled over Kalda, a small yet well-fortified town to the North. During the reign of Nora's grandfather, Bjorn, this town was beseiged as the ageless queen decided to seize control of the Northern lands. After nearly three months of fighting, the attackers finally managed to break down the gates. Bjorn gave his life defending his land and its people. When the people turned to Bjorn's son, Eirik, he ordered the men to stand down. It was either that or be exterminated.

Thankfully, life as one of the queen's growing number of vassals was not too bad for the people of Kalda. They had been introduced to technology more advanced than the town had ever seen, and their relatively isolated location ensured that the queen wasn't breathing down their necks as often as towns that were closer to the capital. In time, Eirik and his wife had a daughter, Nora.

From an early age Nora was simply fascinated by technology, much like others of her generation. With the resources her father had access to, she was able to learn how it all worked. Showing much promise in building machines, Eirik sent her off to an academy at the capital by the time Nora was eighteen so that she could further her education. Nora's willingness to learn, coupled with her status as a noble, eventually caught the eye of the queen herself after a few years at the academy. This soon led to Nora, at the age of twenty-one, being offered to join the queen's Royal Artificers, a group of the best and brightest minds working on designing and building new inventions for the queen.

Her first year or so with the Royal Artificers was spent as an initiate, working under one of the more experienced members of the organisation. After that, she was considered a full member, free to work on whatever she desired for the queen. While Nora had helped design a modest number of inventions in her career, it was only during the winter months of the second year that she found the inspiration for a project of her very own. Over the years she worked on it in her free time, and only when she felt that it was ready to begin work on a full-scale prototype did she request a private audience with the queen to show her work thus far. The queen's reaction was... eager, to say the least, which gave Nora a slight cause for concern. However, as she was busy overseeing construction and going on a personal investigation would have been too conspicuous, Nora had no choice but to seek out some hired help in the form of a woman named Jackie. Jackie didn't ask about pay too much at first, but she seemed fine with having Nora build her a little gadget on the quiet.

Construction of the prototype went by with little to report, until a few days before its estimated time of completion. Jackie had managed to... "find" a modified copy of the original blueprints that had been in the ownership of the queen herself. The additions made it clear what the queen had planned, and Nora had to put a stop to this without delay. In the dead of night, she broke into where the research was being kept with Jackie's help and put it all to the flame, though not before Nora grabbed some of the blueprints first. It was sad enough having to see it all go, and the inventor was not about to let it all have been for nothing.

Having committed this act of arson, there was nothing for it but to run. Packing up what possessions she had, Nora left the palace later that night. The fire did its job in destroying the research, although the queen saw to it that the truth behind why the fire started never left the palace walls. Meanwhile, Nora continued to request Jackie's help, both in finding a place to hide out, and later the whereabouts of a group calling themselves the Corsair Knights...

Nora made her way down the sooty streets of the city, with Jackie following close behind. Less than an hour ago they had met with one of Jackie's contacts, who had given them the address where the group calling themselves the Corsair Knights were supposed to be meeting. It was somewhere in one of the archive buildings in the old part of town, which Nora knew the layout of quite well, particularly because the Queen's palace was in that very same area. Quite bold of these Knights, to hide right under her nose like this.

"Genius fellas, these Knights." Jackie spoke sarcastically, following an eager- or perhaps anxious Nora leading them both through the part of town that Jackie preferred to call the 'Wallets-with-legs district'. "Isn't their hideout basically the same as pulling a sheet over your head and shouting; "Now I'm invisible."?"

"Either that or they knew it would be the last place the Queen would look." Nora replied. "Regardless, they are our best chance at seeing a revolution which is actually organised." Once the duo had entered the old district, they kept to the shadows. Were Nora spotted by the guards here, she would likely be arrested on sight. However, with Jackie's help she was able to get to the building undetected by way of some back alleys the information broker knew of. While they did manage to find a door round the back of the building, it was locked. This wasn't the kind of place that allowed just anyone to waltz in, after all.

"Locked, huh?" An observant comment indeed. After a series of door-prodding and thoughtful hmm's, the thief proceded to step back as she gave her companion a nonchalant wave. "Well, that's my job over with. I guess you will have to wait until someone important has time to pass by and open it for yaz." She spoke with a grin, although in the dead seriousness of her tone one could only guess if she was joking.

"Byyyeee, Nora dear~ 'Twas nice working with ya. Good luck with your ambition and all that!" Before she got a chance to even attempt escape, however, she was yanked back by her scarf.

"We had a deal that you would bring me to the Corsair Knights." Nora stated calmly. "If you wish to see the rest of that payment, or even the end of today, then I suggest you help me get inside." The artificer had a firm grip on that scarf, and gave Jackie a look as if daring her to try anything stupid.

"And what is it you are paying me with, exactly. Hmm?" Jackie retorted rather... smugly, feeling in no way frightened by the strongwoman's threats. Although a fist-to-face from Nora, especially with those gauntlets of hers, wasn't something Jackie preferred to receive. "Because last time I checked, we hadn't agreed on any sort of payment. You declined my... last suggestion, after all." The thief teased, playing along with her capture as she gently partook in a one-sided tug-of-war with Nora. "Well then. If you wouldn't mind letting go of my scarf, we might be able to talk this over."

If there was anything that made Nora uneasy then it was certainly that little "suggestion" of Jackie's in regards to payment. Still, she was willing to do her job, or at the very least she'd decided against legging it at the first opportunity. The artificer relinquished her hold on Jackie's scarf. "I just might have some gold coins for you, if you bring me to the Corsair Knights. Can you pick the lock to this door?"

"You're no fun..." Jackie muttered, letting out a huff before nodding to herself. Like it was money she was after in this particular situation. "Fine... I'll have this baby open in a moment." She spoke confidently. Of course, rarely was there a lock that could keep the woman from entering places she shouldn't. Taking out her set of lockpicks, Jackie began to diligently, but carefully, work her way through the series of pins that kept the duo from checking the inside of the archive. "Aaand, open sesame!"

Stepping forward, Nora tried the door handle. The door was unlocked, yes, but when she tried pushing to open the door there was a thud as the door hit an obstruction. "Damn, it must have been bolted as well." she said, looking for a way around this unforseen complication. It was then that she spotted the window. "Think you could climb through there and unbolt the door? I can give you a leg up so you'd be able to reach it."

"I'd rather you lend me a hand. Feet are so hard to balance on." Jackie joked, following Nora's gaze to spot the window herself. Here was on the hope that it wouldn't be shut tight like the door. "Alright, if you want to stand over there for a minute..."

Nora complied with the request, standing underneath where the window was so she could give the thief a boost. Within the space of a minute or so, Jackie had managed to open the window and climb inside. All that was left was for her to take the bolt off the door so Nora could enter...

Soon after Jackie's little endevour to unbolt the heavy door that previously blocked the path of Nora and herself, the two women were quickly discovered the second they had entered the, what they presumed was an abandoned archive.

Evidently not, or they wouldn't have been spotted otherwise. Her eyes fell on the figure that sat at the other end of the room, watching as his supposed entourage gathered around him. Jackie felt wary, but was quick to retort in her usual brash and snarky tone. "Do you always address people by their current stereotype, or is being a presumptuous git the only way you can get your jollies?"

Nora felt hard pressed to suppress a smirk at Jackie's quip as she entered the room, making sure to close the door behind her. "I think that, compared to the Queen, we're all 'young pups' here," she remarked. "And since my companion and I are not being held at gunpoint, I suppose I would be correct in assuming that you are indeed the Corsair Knights I have been looking for. If you have truly been keeping an eye on the Queen's activities as of late, then I'm sure you would have some inkling of who I may be."

The city made Amity nervous. It was too still, no rustling leaves or singing birds to reassure her. The only sound she could hear in the darkness were Butterscotch's hooves clopping heavily on the cobbles, and they seemed louder than thunder in the quiet. She wrapped her arms around herself, for comfort. William glanced briefly back at his sister, frowning at her discomfort. He shook his head and turned back to their objective. Finally, the shadowed roads and alleys led William, Amity and Butterscotch to the building the note told of.

A black horse stood before the gate to an old, but impressive building. The horse turned to look at the approaching group curiously, and Amity swung herself down off of Butterscotch's back. She reached a hand out for the horse to smell, carefully not looking directly at the beast.
"Hello there, friend." She murmured soothingly. William knew better than to approach while Amity was doing this, so hung back with Butterscotch until his sister was done. The strange horse still seemed slightly wary of them, but he didn't spook when, after a nod from Amity, William dismounted and tied Butterscotch next to him. With the mare secured, the Clarence siblings finally began approaching the building.

They were surprised to find the door open, but with a glance at each other, both of them stepped inside. As they continued, now following the sound of voices, William's hand slowly came to rest on the pommel of his sword, and Amity's in the crook of his arm. The voices that floated through the building seemed to be the voices of a few woman, and a man. A room opened out before them, one which contained a number of people. Three women stood before, presumably, the man they had heard, who was covered from head to foot. Amity hung back slightly, as William stepped forward. He bowed respectfully, just as his mother had shown him when he was young.
"William and Amity Clarence, representing the Loup Caravan?" He introduced, indicating himself and Amity in turn.

Nora watched as one of the robed figures came over to her and Jackie, offering a handshake. Although the man stood taller than the artificer herself, she firmly shook his hand without hesitation. Perhaps being accepted into this group wasn't going to be such a complicated matter after all.

Just then, another two people - a man and a woman - entered through the still open front door of the building. Luckily, they weren't guardsmen, seeing as they decided to introduce themselves rather than start shooting at everyone present. Nora quickly racked her brains for any knowledge of the Loup Caravan they spoke of. Were they expected guests of the Corsair Knights?

Jackie brushed the handshake aside, only offering a muffled "Hi." from the corner of her mouth. There was no reason she should be buddy-buddy with some stranger who, truth be told, was coming off as slightly patronizing and just a little bit too eager to make acqauintances. Or perhaps that was just Jackie's grump talking. Either way, Jackie wasn't feeling hunky-dory being forced to wait out this charade of friendliness.

As Jackie was about to cut to the chase, two more people entered the archive. It wouldn't have bothered her so much if it weren't for...

"Geez, so much for a closed meeting. Why don't we go ahead and invite everyone and their dog while we're at it?" The thief commented with emphasized sarcasm, nodding her head in the direction of the door that was so clearly opened it may as well be waving flirtatiously for prying eyes to come take a closer look. Honestly, some people could be as dumb as a post.
