The rules of this challenge of the Kings were quite simple:
1. Don't kill the other competitors
2. If you get caught during an assassination attempt the crown will deny any involvement
3. Never reveal who you truly are. You were given an alias for this tournament use it.
5. There are twenty-five of you. The winner will be the last left in the competition, you will serve as the King's champion for seven years, then you will be granted your freedom.
5. Don't touch the Prince.

The fifth and last rule was directed at Myra specifically, a smirk spread over her face when the words were spoken. She was the only female there, the only female competing, not to say that she was surprised. Females didn't tend to go into her line of work, or really do anything against the rules at all. They were usually married by her age with a child or two, if not they were most likely engaged that was simply how it worked. Myra however, had spent the last year in the salt mines, even locked up she still managed to cause trouble. Cyrus would have been proud of her.

The guard that had fetched her from said mines with none other than the prince grabbed her arm roughly, unlocking the chains around her wrists. "If you so much as touch a hair on anyone's head, you're dead." He sneered into her ear, she looked at him with cold hard eyes clicking her tongue in annoyance.

"You're the one that's going to end up dead if you keep threatening me."
Myra sneered right back at him pulling her wrists away from him rubbing where the chains had been. She really wondered what was going through the Kings mind, having all of these Criminal's here, he must have been mad.

~*~
A month later
~*~

It had only been a month, four weeks, and there was only twenty of them left. The lot of them were idiots in Myra's opinion, didn't know what they were doing, faking it. The challenges so far were child's play for her, things Cyrus had her doing before the age of twelve. What she was curious about was the Prince, he was spending an awful lot of time with her given the fact that she had distinct instruction not to touch him, he was coming into her chambers quite often. A knock at her door drew Myra's attention. A smile came onto her lips when she saw the Prince enter.

Standing Myra moved over to him crossing her arms, the maids that morning had forced her into another extravagant dress and a painful corset, she was already in a bad mood from that alone, but she had to keep up with the identity the crown had given her while she played the King's little game.

"Prince Darius, don't you have guards to control?"
She asked tilting her head slightly, he was in his uniform how strange that he was here when he was clearly supposed to be somewhere else. Myra smiled again moving back to where she was sitting crossing her legs looking back at the prince. "You shouldn't be in here. I say that every time you come." Myra spoke softly opening the book she had been reading before glancing up at the prince from time to time.

Summary - Crowned Prince of Dendon, and the Captain of the Guard. Darius is a young man who is often called the paragon of what a true man should be, ought to be, and can be. He is one who prefers to get his feelings and thoughts through action, not words, but is always willing to take a diplomatic approach to situations if there is such a possibility.

Currently Feeling - Intrigued and embarrassed.

Darius expressed little pleasure in hearing about the misfortune of others. Of the candidates, five had fallen out. Despite being knowledgeable about the game, he was not allowed to give them special treatment, either. Those who had failed were treated like the criminals they truly were, and so Darius had brought justice to them, be it in the form of imprisonment or execution. But those who participated knew exactly what they were getting into and so fault lies simply upon them.

He hated the entire thought of this game, however. Murder was never really excusable. To steal the life away from someone was just about the worse crime that he could think of, and here the King was, encouraging it. Why did the King even want these assassins? It was likely for something cruel and wicked. The ambition of his father was great, but the goal was horrendous. Evil, even. How could he be born from such a tainted bloodline? It would be an understatement to say that Darius loathed the man his father was, but it was not as though he had the power to do anything about it. His father had the support of most of his people due to just how well he was when expanding their territory, especially after he annihilated the only kingdom standing in their way. Darius might as well be alone if he were to attempt to go up against the King. So, he settled for doing what he could for the people right in front of him. Perhaps when he could inherit the throne, he could make things right, but for now, this was the best he could do.

Except that even now, he was turning the other way when lives were in danger. Innocent, unjustified murders were allowed to take place and he knew it, but could do nothing without upsetting his father which was tantamount to suicide. It sickened him so, but at the very least, he would personally take in those who made the mistake of being caught or foiled.

Perhaps he enjoyed the misfortune of those who were able to be considered "evil".

Of those wretched assassins, one particularly stood out to him. The singular female assassin, and the one he was betting to "win" this competition. Myra Greyson, a rather famous assassin as of late. To get imprisoned in the Blackdale Salt Mines was quite the feat for a criminal, almost an honor if it weren't a prison for the unjust. Most of the other "assassins" were people he had never even heard of, but this girl... she was quite infamous. And, like any assassin: deadly. He always had his eye on her and refused to let his guard down around the woman, especially when they were together. But she also intrigued him. He did not support her actions or "occupation", but Darius found himself wondering how a woman seemed to be the best bet for this tournament.

The time for thought had ended, however. Darius stood before the entrance to the room of said assassin. This was not the first time he had been here, nor would it be the last. He was naturally attracted to the most interesting of the bunch, after all. He knocked on the door before entering.

"Prince Darius, don't you have guards to control?" she asked. He was still in uniform so it was to be expected, but as he would likely be required for some simple task or another, changing was simply a bother. He might have been a bit naughty and dumped some of his smaller duties on a guard to come here, but it wasn't like it was anything immediately important.

"The guards of the city aren't so inept that they need my eye on them every waking moment. They shall be fine." he replied, entering the room and closing the door behind him.

"You shouldn't be in here. I say that every time you come."

He found it funny. Funny that someone who was perfectly capable of murdering a big number of people was able to speak so calmly, so normally. This woman looked gorgeous, almost like a princess, was an assassin. His initial disbelief had since faded away, but it was always odd to see her talk instead of killing. It made him realize that even murderers were human too.

"I'm well aware of that. But there's no real harm in checking on you, is there? Well, it is not as if you're unique -- I visit the rest that remain, but I do admit I find myself in your chambers a lot more often than anybody else." he felt a bit embarrassed admitting that but continued. "It's probably because you seem to be the most dangerous. You may consider that a compliment to your ability, if you so wish."

"The guards of the city aren't so inept that they need my eye on them every waking moment. They shall be fine."

A small smile spread onto Myra's lips, she had been easing her boredom of late by studying the King guard, she knew exactly how they worked, when they changed shifts, where the less guarded parts of the castle were, if she wanted to she could easily escape without anyone seeing her. Not that she would do that, if she did she would be running for the rest of her life, if she won this competition she would serve the King for seven years doing nothing worse than what Cyrus would have had her do, then she was free.

"I'm well aware of that. But there's no real harm in checking on you, is there? Well, it is not as if you're unique -- I visit the rest that remain, but I do admit I find myself in your chambers a lot more often than anybody else."

Myra's eyes flickered up from her book to look at the Darius, she found that intriguing, to say the least, but didn't show it.

"It's probably because you seem to be the most dangerous. You may consider that a compliment to your ability, if you so wish."

Myra crossed her legs once more chuckling slightly at the comment, she didn't need compliments on her abilities she was very aware of what she was capable of and how just the whisper of her name struck fear into even the strongest people. Cyrus had made sure she ended up that way, talented, dangerous, and feared.

"I am the most dangerous."
Myra responded, it was the simple truth. The others were decent, she may have even gone as far as to call some of them good, but she was by far the most dangerous. "Your father seems to think this is a competition, yet he specifically sought me out. Sent his own son to come and fetch me. I think he just likes a good dog fight, he knows who's going to win."

Most would have called Myra cocky, though everyone knew she was the best trained. She stood closing her book setting it on the table shrugging her shawl off, turning Myra draped it over her chair, forgetting that the strapless, low back dress would show the top half of the scars from the whippings she had received in the salt mines. Every single one was for a good cause, though no one would believe that. She was labeled an assassin a murdered, someone who could never have a good intention.

Myra walked over to the closet pulling out a pair of black pants and a black shirt making quick work of the corset on the back of her dress; not exactly caring that Darius was in the room. As she walked into an anti-chamber to change. She emerged again a few minutes later looking less like a princess and more like herself. Standing in front of the mirror she quickly braided her hair back before turning back to Darius.

"We have a challenge today." She explained like Darius needed an explanation she assumed he knew when the challenges were and where they would take place. "I'm assuming I will see you there." Myra smiled gently at him before moving out of the room disappearing down the hallway.

~*~

"As you can see, there are five cups in front of you. Once of them is water, the other five contain different poisons including Nightlock." Myra felt her stomach twist at the name, she herself never used it, it was the most dangerous poison on the continent if not the world, and was a horrible way to go. She glanced over at where Darius was standing by the King for a moment before looking back at the man who was speaking to them. "You will move them in order from least deadly to most deadly, you will drink the one you deem least deadly. You can begin."

Myra quickly identified the first three poisons quickly ranking them, all poisons she had used before, all that was left was the water and the Nightlock which look, and smell exactly the same. Myra however, had a trick to identify the Nightlock. She pulled a strand of her hair out placing it in one of the cups, it sizzled. That was the Nightlock, she quickly moved it to the end of the row of cups putting her hands behind her back-stepping away from the table to signal that she was done.

One by one they all sipped the cup they deemed least deadly, Myra had gone first, she took a sip from the cup; water. The rest soon followed, a few had ingested the lesser poisons that could easily be treated with a herb and some rest luckily for them they were doing this challenge in the infirmary. The last one, was a man perhaps a year younger than Myra herself, she had noticed him the first day, silently wondered what he had done to end up here. He had placed the Nightlock first, dropping almost instantly after ingesting it.

Myra rushed over to the man rolling him onto his back. "Someone needs to help him." The King smirked at her. "Oh, he will be helped, once he learns his lesson."

She knew the King wouldn't leave enough time to save the man, she got up quickly moving around the infirmary picking up herbs here and there as she went, she knew how to make the antidote, and did so with little to no time to spare. Myra held his head steady with one of her hands, he had passed out from the pain but his body still shook. She carefully poured the freshly made liquid into his mouth making sure he didn't choke, the shaking stopped soon after. She looked up at the King pushing stray hair from her face.

"That is no way to teach a lesson." Myra stood when the women healer and the physician started to move the body to the bed, she looked at the King one more time before leaving the room, she had won that challenge, she was free to go.

Currently Feeling - Terrified and angered.

"I am the most dangerous."

Most would've taken this as an overabundance of confidence, but Darius was simply reminded of himself. Her claim was very likely to be true, though Darius did not assume things until it was clear otherwise. But it hadn't been too long since he himself made a very similar statement. In regards to combat and leadership potential, the Prince had proven himself to be the most capable. Even members who were close to twice his age, with much more experience than him, failed to best him in a duel, and when he put effort into leading his men, none had the same sense as he did. He had the makings of a perfect general, which was disappointing, since he had no interest in helping his country lay waste to others. But I digress. Much like himself, Myra was Leagues above her fellow contestants, and that was merely a fact.

"Your father seems to think this is a competition, yet he specifically sought me out. Sent his own son to come and fetch me. I think he just likes a good dog fight, he knows who's going to win." she continued.

Darius offered a lengthy reply. "He is known for his power. And not all power comes from brawn. A good head on your shoulders can do you much more good than any muscle could ever accomplish. The King does not rely on others if he is not required to. He may take advice in mind when making decisions, but he leads himself. Rumors and gossip about your strength is certainly not enough to convince him that you're worth anything to him." the Prince continued speaking. If he wasn't talking to someone who was renowned for murder, he might've at least averted his gaze when she ditched her corset, but he didn't have the luxury of trusting that he'd be alive if his eyes weren't on her at all times. That being said, he typically was a gentleman in the presence of ladies, so it was fairly hard not to feel awkward about it.

"It is less likely that this is supposed to be a competition between the bunch of you and more likely that it is a test to confirm you aren't just an unjustified rumor. But do take this with a grain of salt as it is merely speculation on my behalf. Perhaps he is already confident in your skill and is simply wishing to be amused? Perhaps both."

Since it was in regards to the animal that was his father, he wouldn't be very surprised if this rung true.

-------------------------

If an assassin wanted Darius dead, they would likely resort to poison. This was assuming that the potential murderer of Darius was bright enough to realize the danger of taking him head-on. In truth, Prince Darius was nothing less than an absolute monster when it came to straight combat. He had trained for most of his life with determination rivaled by very few. Though his skill was a result of a dream he considered stupid and immoral now, his strength even while he was young was just about unrivaled. Therefore, Darius knew that were he to be murdered, it would not be because he lost a duel, but because he was cautious enough. That is why it was probably best if he paid a lot of attention to the challenge the assassins were undergoing today. It could potentially save his life in the future.

That being said, it did make him feel uncomfortable. To die by such a petty means of murder would be... unfortunate.

Darius had no real involvement in the actual challenge, so he stood by his father as the two watched the assassins. He took note that his father seemed pleased that Myra seemed to be very quick in deducing which poisons were what and placed them in presumably the correct order. But more importantly to Darius was how Myra seemingly figured out a way to separate the deadly poison from water. He took a mental note of that, figuring it could be useful later. As the challengers began drinking their "water", he noticed that, unsurprisingly, Myra was unaffected by any poison. Some others seemed to be in discomfort, but nothing that would threaten their lives before treatment could be given. However, there was one problem.

One of the contestants that was standing mere moments earlier had dropped like a sack of potatoes, and was in obvious pain. Worried, Darius had begun a motion to run over there, but was stopped by his father's arm. "Oh, he will be helped, once he learns his lesson." the King smirked. Having turned to face his father when being halted, he was surprised when he finally looked back at the man and saw that none other than Myra, the scariest of them, was attempting to help the inexperienced victim. It was very odd to see such a thing.

As Myra begun her hunt for what he assumed to be an antidote, Darius complained to his father. "Father, he'll die if he isn't treated immediately. Making him suffer like this is---"

There was only one thing Darius truly feared, and that was his father. The glare he got that was not accompanied by words was enough to make even the Prince and Captain of the Guard, immediately shut his mouth. How weak was he? This was a man who stood for all he thought was wrong with the world, and here he was trembling! What a pathetic prince he was! As things seemed to clear up after Myra had brought the antidote, Darius could only feel anger and disappointment, but mostly at himself. Was he nothing but a small child, even now?

Like usual Myra was forced into another dress after the challenge and ushered out of her room much to her displeasure, all she wanted to do at that point was crawl into bed, not be shown off like she knew the King was doing. Many of the Court members didn't know who she really was, that was the way it was supposed to be, before she was in this wretched castle everyone in the keep took extra percuations to keep Myra's identity a secret.

She moved back to the infirmary where maybe an hour before the man she had saved still lay in a bed.

"How is he?"

She directed the question at the healer, the physician was clearly just for the royal family and wouldn't treat a commoner let alone an unexperienced assassin who clearly didn't know his ass from his head. That didn't mean he deserved to die.

"The antidote you made saved his life, but he was under the poisons grasp for quite a time, we won't know if there will be any after affects, or if he will wake at all."

Myra looked down at him, someone, somewhere loved him. He was a son, a brother, someone loved. He didn't deserve anything the King had thrown at him so far. Myra could hear the physician trembling in his seat so she didn't look his way, she just looked back at the healer before turning to leave, stopping in her tracks when the healer spoke again.

"An assassin wouldn't have cared for this man, wouldn't have helped him."
She began. "Did your master not train that out of you?"

Her back straightened a little more, oh how Cyrus had tried to train it out of her, tried to beat it out of her, yet compassion for the lives around her still overtook any trait Cryus could have pounded into her head, could have carved into her mind. She simply acted like she had no compassion, compassion could get assassins killed, what happened with Sam, proved that.

"Of course he did." Myra didn't feel like dwelling on that fact leaving the infirmary.

~*~

Myra headed to the guardens, she saw a group of children playing, she smiled at them walking past. She knew that was something she would never have, something she dearly wanted. Another thing taken away from her. Myra moved along the path, smiling upon seeing Darius, though something was off about the Prince. Myra frowned when he fell into step with her, she gently linked her arm with his resting her head on his shoulder. She knew that look too well.

"It wasn't your fault."
She whispered softly lifting her head up from his shoulder. "There was no way of telling your father would do that, and there was no way to stop him from doing so." Myra looked Darius in the eyes, she was 100% serious. "Your fathers crimes are his crimes, not yours, his. Stop looking like you've failed someone, you haven't failed anyone. Besides, you are much more attractive with a smile on your face." Myra joked laughing a little bit, before long they were in the woods, Myra led Darius to a spot she had found a couple weeks before, a beautiful weeping willow stood by the side of a lake, Myra took her shoes off stepping into the water a little bit.

"It's beautiful isn't it?"

Currently Feeling - Determined and relatively playful.

Darius' foul mood hadn't died down. He prided himself in a few things. Things like his swordplay, his sense of morality, and his dedication to justice. But recently, he found himself questioning two of those. Allowing himself to remain docile while the King tried to figure out which person could kill the best, not taking action after deducing that the winner was more or less decided beforehand and people were suffering regardless, and of course, being unable to speak up against his father, the man he despised most. The Prince hated the feeling of weakness, and that's why he was a man who could not normally stand by when those who couldn't defend themselves needed help. He knew the feeling. And his fear preventing him from saying what was right could only be described as weakness. He still needed to become stronger.

"It wasn't your fault." My told him, walking beside the Prince as he sulked. "There was no way of telling your father would do that, and there was no way to stop him from doing so."

It wasn't that she was doing anything wrong (far from it, actually), but hearing her say such things only made his mood worse temporarily. Was he reduced to a man who needed to be comforted by an assassin, now? How pathetic. After a moment, he did manage to turn that feeling around. If he was so obviously distressed, then he certainly wasn't being very masculine. Bravado finally picked him up out of the sullen mood as Myra continued. "Your fathers crimes are his crimes, not yours, his. Stop looking like you've failed someone, you haven't failed anyone. Besides, you are much more attractive with a smile on your face."

"Oh, but I have. I've not only failed one of my own citizens suffering before me, but I've also failed myself." he replied in a tone a bit strange for the message. It sounded much less sad than it should have, at least. "But that simply means I have room for improvement. That I can be a better person for the people around me." Darius began to sound determined, as if he now had a new goal or something. That was only partially true. If he had revealed more about his personal life to her, and she had known him for a bit longer, she would know this just meant he was going to spend less time sleeping and more time doing whatever he could to help, be it extra patrols or even doing more than his share of paperwork. With the very odd exception of visiting Myra, he really never did slack off on work.

"You don't look half bad either, at least without a worried expression. You're a bit strange for someone so experienced with killing, I'll admit."

A compliment for a compliment. This was equal, wasn't it? He did half expect this to be some ploy to let his guard down around her, but at this point, that was subconscious. Watching her was almost unintentional at this point. That's probably why he was a bit apprehensive, mentally, about following her all the way out to wherever in the woods she was leading him, but she was likely aware of the reasons why as well, so there was little point in bringing them up. If she were to make an attempt on his life, he would respond as best he could to ensure it could only ever be an attempt.

That being said, the view wasn't bad at all. Darius didn't really have the time or interest in appreciating views, but to him, it wasn't bad at all. Maybe good, even?

"I won't disagree with you at all." he said from behind. This scene felt like it was right out of some cruel romance book. But how weird would that be, if they were in such a thing? He certainly had very little time for women to begin with, let alone someone like her. But he would admit, a quiet life where he could enjoy such things... was enviable to him.

"You've been here for less than two months and you've already shown me a part of my own home I've yet to see, I must give you credit."

A half-truth. He was definitely knowledgeable about the local area, but he certainly had only heard about the lake. He didn't know just how beautiful it was. Or that he could appreciate a surprise from an assassin, either.

"You've been here for less than two months and you've already shown me a part of my own home I've yet to see, I must give you credit."

Myra turned laughing a little bit. Stepping out of the water she moved back over to Darius with a small smile.

"I think you need to get out of that castle more, Your Highness." Myra slipped her shoes back on. "Ever danced without music playing?" She asked with a small smile, Darius needed to have more fun, let go for a little while. At his seemingly confused look Myra laughed a little bit. "It's easy. The golden crown waltz will probably be best, since you have probably known it since you were six." The golden crown waltz was the dance only royal families knew, the dance only royals performed. Myra had learned it the year her home had been destroyed, burned to the ground, she never stopped dancing it, despite what she was now.

Resting her hand on Darius' shoulder, Myra was surprised when he rested his hand on her waist in return. The waltz was rather complex, hard to do properly, yet the pair did it perfectly, even without music. Myra smiled at Darius when they stopped, her smile quickly turned into a frown, she pushed Darius to the ground jumping out of the just in time, looking back at the arrow that hit the tree behind them.

Myra was back on her feet quickly, with feline quickness and precision she had the first three attackers unarmed and on the ground, she grabbed the bow and quiver from the first attacker. Knocking an arrow onto the bowstring she aimed it at the last man that she could see standing in the bushes. She lowered the bow when he stepped out, holding a knife to a young girls neck.

"Serving the crown that destroyed your home Daeris? Your people died at the hand of his father, you were thrown into Cyrus' grip, because of them. The Fae princess became a murderer, because of his bloodline." Myra hissed at the man slightly. "What would your mother say? Your father?" Myra lifted the bow again. The man shook his head clicking his tongue. "If you miss, you kill this child."

"Who are you?" The man chuckled. "The person sent to get the deadliest assassin killed." Myra smirked slightly.

"You don't kill the assassin, the assassin kills you, and I never miss." She released the arrow hitting the man directly between the eyes.

The girl ran to Myra hugging her legs, she couldn't have been more than six. Dropping the bow she picked up the startled girl comforting her the best she could. Myra looked at Darius, silently wondering if he would report to his Father what he just heard, if he did, she would be dead before morning. "We should get back, Your Highness." Myra started heading back towards the path, running her fingers through the girls dark hair exactly like a mother would when soothing a child.

~*~

Myra didn't go to bed that night, she sat, waiting for the Kings guards to come slaughter her. She sat with a history book in her lap, looking at the last painted picture of her with her family. She gently traced over her mother's face, a sad smile making its way onto her lips. When the boards outside her room creaked she stood up, letting the dagger she had hid up her sleeve slip into her hand. Standing by the door, Myra moved swiftly getting the dagger at the person's neck before they had a chance to think.

"Darius?" Myra sighed removing the dagger from his neck. "I was expecting someone else." She admitted placing the dagger on the table, but she didn't take her hand off of it, realizing the King could have easily sent Darius to kill her. "Unless your father sent you here to kill me." She watched him closely, it didn't look like he was armed, but she wasn't going to take her hand off the dagger until he answered.

Currently Feeling - Playful and relatively curious.

Darius could not help but become worried. It was because he was beginning to feel like he at peace. Like life was a lot more simple than it really was, even if only for this moment. In normal circumstances, one would question why this would cause a fuss. But this wasn't a normal circumstance. Darius was out in the middle of a forest, presumably alone, with likely the world's most deadly assassin. Feeling at peace was the last thing one should do in this situation. If anything, he should have his blade drawn just for good measure. But the Prince couldn't bring himself to do so. Perhaps it was the beautiful sight before his eyes, or the gorgeous view of the lake? Who knew. But he simply walked alongside the assassin like it was more natural than breathing, and almost even smiled along with her.

As she began asking about dancing, he was a bit confused why she'd even bring it up. Sure, he'd danced quite a bit when he was a younger man, but aside from when he was obligated he never did nowadays. It was one of those things he simply lost interest in after he lost his best friend. What was the point? "It's easy. The golden crown waltz will probably be best, since you have probably known it since you were six." she suggested. She would be correct in the assumption that that was the dance he was most familiar with and if he had to rate the suggestion, it would pass with flying colors. That is, of course, if it hadn't brought up a few questions to mind. Why did she know about the dance? Had she murdered royalty before? Or was there another reason? Luckily, there was a very easy way to solve this, but it involved going deep into enemy territory and risking everything in an all for nothing gamble. Because he wasn't sure if he had two left feet or not, and failing this dance would be quite embarrassing. Hopefully, for the sake of justice, he remembered the dance properly.

And so, the Prince and the Assassin began to dance.

It took only moments after the music in his head began for him to realize it was a dance he couldn't simply forget. Each step, each movement had naturally occurred between them, as if he wasn't even controlling his own body. Dancing was never something he particularly liked, but he sure as hell had performed this one enough for it to be a part of him. As all royals did, he assumed. Which was why he knew his initial assumption about her knowing about it through some assassination was impossible. Simply witnessing this dance was not enough. Time, effort, and practice were required. And so that meant there was only one possibility. Darius decided to confirm it for himself as the two had finally finished their waltz.

"Myra, are yo---"

He had tried to say something to the assassin who was smiling so brilliantly, but instead found himself on his rump instead. But this was a favorable outcome compared to being skewered by the arrows that occupied the space he had been in a moment prior. Though he regretted the mood had been completely ruined, he was Captain of the Guard for a reason, and did not hesitate to get up and begin to draw his blade. Myra had quickly darted off to deal with the threat, and although Darius would have been glad to help her, he had been assaulted from behind by a man with a dagger. Instead of being stabbed in the back, however, Darius noticed just in time and had avoided most of the blade, though felt a sharp pain on his side, having not been fast enough to avoid the entire blow. The two men rolled to the ground from the force of the missed attempt, and a struggle ensued. Though the man had the advantage of being on the top, a quick elbow and a noticeable difference in the strength between the two quickly saw to it that Darius emerged as the victor. Lucky for the villain, Darius' blade had fallen from his hand during the roll or he might have simply thought to decapitate the fellow instead of knocking him unconscious. Yet, there was no time to worry about what could have happened. There were more people to deal wi---

Oh, okay.

There was one more person to deal with, it seemed. Myra had made fairly quick work of the others and was now in a standoff between the last man, who owned a hostage. Darius approached the situation, but only to spectate. He did not want to risk getting the child killed by this thug.

If anything came from the exchange between Myra and the wannabe assassin, it was the answer to the very question he was about to ask her before being so rudely interrupted. Although now an assassin, Myra was once the princess of a kingdom his father devastated year prior. Penham, a fae kingdom. This news hit him fairly hard, considering he had always felt responsible for not being able to stop his father before the damage had been done. It seemed that not only did he fail his childhood friend, but also Myra, in a way. Darius remained quiet for the rest of the encounter, and remained in a mood seemingly worse than the one he was in before. As the two parted ways once they were back to safety, he took the child and ensured she was not in any further danger.

.................

...........

......

...

.

Darius found himself headed towards Myra's chambers. There was not much thought put into this action, but it was one he took the moment he was freed of his responsibilities for the rest of the day and had changed. Perhaps he was curious as to what caused a princess to become a feared assassin? He wasn't entirely sure of his intentions going in, hoping he could figure them out as they talked.

He did not fear the blade to the neck, and was even expecting it. It was very likely that Myra was wondering when the next foe would present itself. "Pressing a blade to the throat of a nation's prince is quite the offense, I think you should know." he smiled warmly. His mood had certainly improved after he had sorted out some of his thoughts from earlier. As he suspected, she was justly paranoid of another attack and was quite surprised to see him here instead. He was a bit upset that she considered him a suspect immediately after. It hurt his pride as a man of the people, after all.

"You wound me. Need I remind you that I am the Captain of the Guard, not an executioner? My blade is drawn as a reaction, nothing more." he explained. He wasn't armed at the moment, figuring something like this was bound to happen and his defenselessness would hopefully help her trust him. Of course, it did mean he would have nothing but his hands to work with. Luckily, he had been told he was a man who was good with his hands.

Alcohol was best consumed in moderation, lest one ends up somewhere unknown in the morning.

"Rather than attack you, I came hoping to learn a bit about your past, Myra. That is assuming you are willing to tell me, of course." He might've also been a bit worried that people would attempt to slay her while she (and other competitors) were unofficially under his protection. Yes, that was certainly it. It was his obligation to ensure she wasn't hurt because she was a competitor, there was absolutely definitely no other possible reason for him to want to be around her.

...Right?

Myra scanned Darius for any weapons, seeing he had none, and was clearly not there to hurt her, she placed the dagger on the table. She watched him he had come with questions, obviously curious as to how the Crown Princess of one of the most powerful Kingdoms to exist stood before him as an assassin.

"Rather than attack you, I came hoping to learn a bit about your past, Myra. That is assuming you are willing to tell me, of course."

Myra shifted at his words. It was a story few knew, a story Myra didn't speak about. She gestured for him to join her by the fire, sitting in one of the two seats she crossed her legs staring at the flames, the only thing she could really focus on.

"The first thing you should know is my name isn't Myra...It's Daeris...It means light bringer or light princess in Fae."
Myra took a small breath, her real name hadn't been spoken since the night her kingdom burned down; not until tonight that is. She moved her gaze down to her hands. "I was seven when the guards in black came. I had a nightmare, wandered down the hall to my parents bedroom, crawled into bed with them, I thought the wetness in on the sheets was from the rain." She took a slow breath. "I quickly realized it was blood. My scream didn't draw the men that had invaded as I thought it would, instead my nanny came running. By that time flames, filled the night sky, and screams cut through the air. We were followed, my nanny pushed me out the back door of the kitchens, she claimed she didn't know where I was so they killed her."

"I ran as fast as I could into the woods. I tumbled into the river, they left me thinking that if I didn't drown, the fridged water would kill me...I wish it did."

Myra held her hands tightly to keep them from shaking, the memories so vivid that it was like it had happened yesterday. She remembered how cold the water was, how it stung her skin when she plunged into it, how much it hurt, how much she wished it would have killed her.

"Cyrus found me half dead, took me to the Assassins keep, nursed me back to health. Trained me. Sent me to kill for the first time when I was twelve. I wasn't strong enough to overpower the man, so I used poison until I was about fourteen. I felt remorse every time, every day, it would eat at me. When Cyrus found me crying, he had me beaten. Assassin's could not feel remorse. After that U trued to justify what I was doing. They were bad people, murderers, and worse. But nothing, nothing justifies that. Cyrus beat me a total of six times for feeling remorse. I formed a mask, an act. The assassin he wanted me to be."

"When I was sixteen, Sam and I left the keep. We kept up our work in order to pay Cyrus off, so we could start a life together. That's when Cyrus went to your father. Your father sent those guards, captured us, beat Sam until he couldn't remember his own name, then killed him...Right in front of me. Then I was taken to the salt mines. I killed the first guard after he beat a child...I was whipped five times."
Myra sighed, turning slightly, slipping her loose shirt down to reveal the whip scars that covered her entire back from top to bottom. "I killed three guards, managed to get 100 women and children out...ten whips, and no food or water for three days. I kept killing guards and releasing people, I would be whipped for it, and starved. But it was always worth it. If I had wanted out, I would have got out, but I figured if I could do one thing right, if I could get them out then, they could kill me and it wouldn't matter."

Myra pulled her shirt back over her back turning back to face Darius, but she didn't look him in the eye, she just looked at the ground, empty eyes just staring at nothing.

"Now I'm here. Waiting for your father to find out I'm alive, waiting for him to kill me because he will, the minute he knows I'm alive, I will be dead."

Myra didn't know why she had told him everything, how her parents died, how she was soaked in their blood, what Cyrus did to her, what his father and Cyrus did to her, but also what they did to Sam, the first person she had learned to love after her parents died. Sam at that time had been everything to her, and he died because of her. She didn't know why she told him how many times she was whipped and why; showed him the scars on her back no one ever saw. Something told her Darius wouldn't hurt her, that she could trust him with everything, her true self. The person who felt remorse, not the monster who killed because she could, the Princess that killed and kills because she has too. Finally Myra lifted her eyes up to look at Darius.

"I think it's a good thing what's left of my people don't know I'm alive. They wouldn't want a monster for a Queen." Myra stood up going over to the window resting her hand against the cold glass.

[OOC: Excuse the shorter post, but making you wait any longer is cruel, I believe]

Well... this was, certainly a lot to take in all at once. Myra had obviously led a tough life ever since the conquering of her kingdom many years ago. Oh, that isn't right. Daeris was her true name, wasn't it? Darius couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor princess. The heart in her story felt completely real to him and he wouldn't believe any amount of acting skill could replicate the emotion she had put on display before him. Even if she was an assassin now, well, she had shown that deep inside, she was still a princess too. It was very unfortunate that he had a father who cared nothing for people, only conquest.

"I can only say that I know how it feels to lose a close friend, powerless to do much about it, and at the hands of the King of Dendon, too."

He wouldn't dare claim to say he knew how she felt about any other subject, as he was aware that despite a few mishaps, he could be seen as a spoiled prince. Pretending would only offend her. He was very sympathetic for her, probably because he partially felt responsible and because he could even relate to her, even if it were only that one thing. The grudge he held against his own father only deepened.

"But I don't think that the people of your country would think you a monster. To save those imprisoned, women and children, even if it required a bit of bloodshed is a noble thing. Even I know that the right cannot be done without the strength and determination to back it up. Not only have you brought yourself to kill to save, but you endured torment just to save even more victims. I guess I really shouldn't claim to know how your people feel, but even if they think of you as a monster, well, I see you in a better light now." he spoke as truthfully as he could. Really, it was the best he could do in this situation.

Darius stood up and joined the former princess at the window.

"Ironically, the King may have quite the army built up, but he has no true allies. The kind of people who follow beside him are the kind who would just as well stab him in the back the moment they get the chance, I'm sure. My father owns none of my heart. Even if it would just be to irritate a thorn in his side, I would not mind offering my protection, if you so wish." The Prince offered. To protect a member of royalty of an enemy kingdom was about as treasonous as you could get, but that simply didn't matter to him at all.

Myra smiled a little bit at Darius' offer, he was taking it all better than she thought he would, yet, she was still surprised she told him anything at all. The usually closed assassin had taken a liking to the last person you would see her liking, or being comfortable with.

"I don't think I need protection. If it wasn't obvious I can handle myself." Myra replied in a joking manner. "But an ally would be wonderful." Myra moved resting a hand on the Prince's shoulder gently kissing his cheek. "Thank you, Darius."

A Month Later

Myra shifted slightly on the blanket they had laid down under the willow tree, despite the even that had occurred there before, they seemed to have made the willow by the lake their spot. Myra had started making time especially for Darius, and would pull him from his work when she could. Myra took another sip from her glass of wine setting it gently down again, she looked at him with a small smile, their constant flirting had started to frustrate Myra beyond belief. Other ladies in the court flirting with him had started to bother her more.

They never went much further than flirting, though Myra had royally frustrated Darius enough a few times that they almost did, but the castle was a risky place for everyone, and if anyone who was anyone saw them together intimately, it would be bad for both of them. However, tonight they were away from the castle, in their spot.

Myra shifted again gently placing a kiss bellow his ear fluttering kisses along his jawline, pausing when she got close to his lips. She looked him in the eye for a moment before bringing their lips together, gently at first, gentle soon turned to passionate. Myra moved so she was straddling Darius' hips.

When Myra broke the kiss she rested her forehead against his, suddenly very unsure of herself. Why would a Prince want her? Yes she was technically a Princess, but a Princess that was very very displaced and who was still to everyone dead. How could a heart like his, possibly love a heart like hers? Broken and battered, and dangerous. She was still a monster with blood on her hands.

"Darius..."
Myra whispered opening her eyes. "Do you want me?"

The question escaped her lips before she could stop it. He had been kissing her back, but could it be because he felt sorry for her? When did she become so insecure?

[I usually. have a better post rate, I swear.]

"Thank you, Darius."

Since Myra had revealed her past to him and he had given his answer, they had become much closer to each other. There was something about her that made something about him feel..., well, he could only describe it as "lighter". His heart, that was. While he was originally curious in her presence more than anything, he now felt his heart beat just a bit faster and his eyes were drawn to her at all times. He wasn't sure at first what it meant, but over the past month he had come to figure that out.

He liked her. Quite a bit, too.

By now, he could not think of her as an assassin. He was fooled. Darius no longer could see himself on edge around her, easily dropping his guard despite a normal person thinking the risk she would do something high. He didn't care, however. She had had many chances to take advantage of him, and did not. No blade in his back, no poison in his food, no death. Instead, Myra had given him happiness. She had made his life just as bright as it had been when he was a small child, and he treasured the feelings he had when they talked. Of course, there were physical ways to express this that never occurred, quite regretfully in Darius' opinion. As a male, it was very hard to resist certain urges that arose from being in contact with Myra constantly, speaking the way they did. But, somehow, they had managed so far. Today was simply another day with Myra, and he was content with that. It did not seem like the King had discovered her identity, or he would have ended this peace by now. So, she was all he was concerned with.

Darius felt a chill run down his body, originating from his ear. Caught up in happy thoughts that didn't suit his former self, he was pleasantly surprised. Myra continued her butterfly kisses until she reached his lips, at which point he found himself staring into her gorgeous eyes, essentially mesmerized. No words were spoken, but a passionate trade of lips was - and it was hard to keep himself from escalating the situation further. Myra straddling him did not help either.

And that's when Myra had finally spoke, though the words were a bit difficult to comprehend at first.

"Darius... do you want me?" her tone seemed troubled as she asked.

The Prince put a little bit of room between them by pushing her away with his arms, but continued holding onto her shoulders. He met her gaze, unblinking. "Of course I do." he answered, smiling wryly immediately after. "It may be hard to believe considering how handsome I am, but I lock lips with only those I desire to." so saying, he gave her a quick peck on the cheek and reversed their positions, now taking the spot on the top but placed none of his weight on her for obvious reasons. He raised his brows in confusion at what had brought this about, as to him it was a very sudden and random question to ask. Was she feeling insecure for some reason? He'd be the first to admit that he was not the best at these situations.

"What worries you?" he questioned bluntly, showing concern. "Has something happened?"[/color]

"It may be hard to believe considering how handsome I am, but I lock lips with only those I desire to."

Myra laughed at Darius' comment, laughing a bit harder when he kissed her cheek reversing their position. Her smile turned into one of admiration and dare she even say love, gently she placed a hand on his cheek.

"What worries you? Has something happened?"

Myra let her hand run gently down his arm, she bit her lip breaking their gaze. Darius was a prince, he would be expected to marry a princess, and though Myra was a princess, she was the princess of the most powerful kingdom that had burned at the hands of his father, and if his father ever found out she was alive, that her bloodline remained, she would have a very large target on her back, and if the King ever found out his own son...

Myra closed her eyes at the thought. The King would stop at nothing to end any memory of her and her family, even if it meant killing his own heir, she knew that.

"You are expected to marry a princess, have heirs for your throne. I may be a princess, but I am princess of a kingdom that burned to the ground. My true name is only spoken by my people when they are mourning my death...And if your father ever finds out who I am, and that you have been with me in any way..."

Myra brushed some of his blonde hair from his face leaning up bringing their lips back together.

"I don't want something happening to you because of me...I'm not worth the risk...I am not worth your life Darius."

She kept her eyes closed making sure her lips stayed only a few centimetres from his, she wanted Darius, wanted to be with him...but if anything happened to him because of her. Myra sighed pushing the thoughts from her head, her lips finding his once more, she tangled her fingers in his hair laying back so her head was against the ground again, her body against his, she felt complete with Darius.

They could worry about the possible consequences later, couldn't they?

"You are expected to marry a princess, have heirs for your throne. I may be a princess, but I am princess of a kingdom that burned to the ground. My true name is only spoken by my people when they are mourning my death..."

Darius frowned. He knew that he was supposed to marry a princess, and he knew damn well that, although she had BEEN a princess, that was no longer the case. Her kingdom destroyed, her people murdered, she did not meet the requirements as a potential candidate for marriage. But he did have feelings with her. To him, that was all that mattered. Even if she could not meet some set standards the monarchy set, he still cared deeply for her. But it was not like he could just do whatever he wished, especially when it came to these matters.

He remained silent and simply kissed her back.

"I don't want something happening to you because of me...I'm not worth the risk...I am not worth your life Darius."

He remained silent... until she had said this. "Hey" he said, accepting her lips once more before being allowed to continue speaking. It was a fresh experience to him, but he could never tire of kissing this woman before him. That is why he had to let her know what she meant to him. "I am curious about this magic you use that lets you steal the words from my lips before I can even speak them." he smiled to her, staring into her unique eyes. "I wonder if I am worth the risk of being around. Prince Darius, son of the man who stole your very throne from you. Rather, I owe you my life and many more. And your life is worth far more than mine ever could hope to be. I am just another prince of a barbarians throne." the joy of being so close to her was matched only by the guilt he felt that the woman he had fallen for was put through so much because of his family. Because of his weakness. She could be at peace, ruling a kingdom of her people if only it were not for that pointless war.

Darius did pity her, but that was definitely not the reason he wanted to be close to her, to feel her warmth, and to enjoy her presence. Having heard what she had been through, he hated hearing about such trials in her life, but loved how strong of person she had to be to get through them. He thought it incomprehensible that not only had she survived, but she retained a gentle, kind nature in spite of her circumstances. Perhaps he also envied her in a way. He had lived a sheltered life, not known to any real struggles like herself. He was not sure if he could even do half as good as her if he were put in the same situation.

"I promise you that right now, you are my life." Darius hugged her close after declaring this. He knew it sounded so odd - like a line coming out of a book - but it was simply felt this way and expressed it.

"I promise you that right now, you are my life."

Myra settled her head in the crook of Darius' neck closing her eyes for a moment. His touch was warm and comforting, it felt like home. He felt like home. She never imagined that home could have two eyes and a heartbeat, never imagined that the man she would fall in love with after Sam would be the son of the man who had destroyed her Kingdom, her family, and most of her people.

"And you are my life."
She whispered softly, she didn't want to move or leave but she knew that people would soon begin to notice that Darius wasn't around, and they would definitely know that she was missing. "We should head back...People will notice we are gone."

Myra brought their lips back together one more time allowing the kiss to linger, she pulled away kissing Darius' cheek before slipping out from underneath him with expert skill. Normally when she did that she was in a fight with someone, not a warm embrace, it felt strange to her, like she had forgotten what it felt like to be loved.

Myra slipped back into her room through the tunnels she had discovered a few days ago, the guards outside her room probably never even knew she left. It took her a day to memorise the passageways, she found every exit in case she needed to flee and fast. She had also discovered the tunnel that led to the Prince's room if she ever wanted to see him without getting caught it would come in use.

It wasn't long before guards were in Myra's room forcing her out of the chair she had settled in. One had a firm grip on her arm it didn't hurt but it was annoying. "I am capable of walking myself." She hissed pulling her arm from the guard's grasp. "Where are we going?" "The King has requested an audience in the throne room. It is of utmost importance we are assured" Myra rolled her eyes. "How melodramatic."

Once in the room, Myra did a quick scan, about twelve guards two of which were guarding the door, another two stood by the King, one of which was Darius, the rest were scattered about the room. All the remaining competitors in the Kings little game stood off to one side of the room, the other side was lined with Lords who were aware of the game, and the Kings Advisors. Myra found herself standing in front of the King, she rolled her shoulders looking directly at him, like a predator sizing up its prey. She smirked at him, at direct way of telling him he didn't scare her without actually saying it. He looked to the guards that stood on one side of the room and the door creaked open.

Cyrus moved into the room with such a cat like grace you wouldn't think him human. It was clear he had trained Myra as she moved in an almost identical way. He stalked directly towards her. "You look much more like a women. A year has done good things for you, Myra. Perhaps one day I will have to take advantage" He spoke loud enough making sure Darius could hear him, of course, he had picked up on that, but he spoke low enough that the other competitors could not hear.

Cyrus circled Myra once before settling behind her, he gently pulled her hair away from her neck. He leant down gently kissing Myra's neck, the feeling of his lips on her skin made her sick. "Unfortunately darling princess, I don't think you will like what I have brought you today. Play your cards carefully. Just like I taught you to." This time he whispered so no one else could hear him, Myra felt her blood run cold at his words she was sure she looked like she had just seen a ghost.

The King nodded once more and the door once again creaked as it swung open. A young girl who could be no more than the age of eight walked through the door. Myra automatically recognised what she was, no human could have eyes like that, and a necklace hung around her neck, the pendant a wolf paw, the secret symbol of the Elves, Myra had one herself, it made it easier to identify each other in times of uncertainty and hiding, and each families was a little different.

"This girl was caught stealing from Lord Cyrus. The punishment is thirty whips." Of course Cyrus would have chosen a girl from Myra's own race, own kingdom to frame and bring here. "Unless Myra, you take the punishment, or you can entertain me and fight your previous Master If you win, the girl goes free, if you don't, the girl will be punished as planned." The King chuckled. "I do love a good dog fight." Myra looked at the young girl before looking at the man who held the weapons, she nodded to him and the man handed Cyrus a knife, then handed Myra three smaller throwing knives.

It was more like a dance then a fight, It was a careful one though, Myra knew Cyrus was dangerous just as well as Cyrus knew Myra was deadly. He managed to catch her off guard stabbing her in the abdomen, It wouldn't kill her, Cyrus would never kill her. "I told you to play your cards carefully." He whispered in her ear, pulling the knife from her torso, blood quickly stained the dress she was wearing, but the pain was bearable, for now. "And I told you to get out of my life, and leave me alone." Myra whispered back throwing one of the knives, it burried itself deep in Cyrus' shoulder, Myra jumped kicking him hard enough in the head that he ended up on the ground, he would be to disoriented to continue.

"And so the student becomes the master."
Myra stepped back dropping the other two throwing knives, she put a hand over the wound in her side, watching as a guard helped Cyrus up steadying him. "Well done. But I am still not releasing the girl." She didn't have the time to argue, she became light headed from the blood loss, and before she knew it she was on the ground. Cyrus hadn't aimed to kill her, but he had aimed to give her a bad enough wound that it wouldn't have time to heal again before the rest of the tasks in the competition. He had aimed to disable her, and he had done just that.
