”I’m finally getting the hang of sustaining the spell. I had to pull some encouragement from inside. I haven’t eaten yet. However now that I’m getting the hang of this I should be able to roast up my food.” Zexen began to light flame under the food to be cooked. ”So Dorian, where are we headed? It’s colder than where we were.”

"We're going to see Fiona." He replied scratching his beard. "She was teleported to our most secure prison, Brikar Prison. Imagine a stronghold that would need an army to both enter and break free fro it. The secured gates are the only way in and the only way out. The walls are high and dozens of guards patrol it. The inmates are held in an underground spire half a mile deep. The cells are small, well guarded, and filled with anti magic items, draining mana much like that bomb. We won't be able to use magic once we're inside. The inmates are bounded with sealing tattoos for extra insurance. It's a sight to behold." Dorian finished, picking up his pipe out of his trouser pocket. Tobacco was one of the few luxuries that soldiers were allowed in abundance and he had taken up a strong liking to it.

As he lit the pipe, Dorian looked out over the horizon. The towers of the prison could just be seen over the landscape. They were getting closer. Dorian looked back over to Zexen trying to roast his food. "How do you like the weather here? Paradise, right?"

Xiao Jingshen opened her eyes at the sound of a knocking at the door. She looked around, unsure of where she was, she sat up in the soft bed, tugging the sheets over her chest.

"Come in?" She called and found Prince Kallias at her door. Odd, she didn't sense him. She didn't sense anyone or anything. She felt nothing. She felt strange, she didn't know how to explain it. She looked at him, with a strange look on her face the moment he entered the room.

"What happened? I feel strange." She said, "Where is my sister, and Severyn?"

Image

Severyn was pacing, his mind reeling from all that had happened. A magic bubble tore through Khalidor, killing many, and disabling thousands. Amelia fainted, Xiao Jingshen lost her Fae but what terrified him the most was the Empress.

They'd heard the stories, the myths, the legends, but they never believed it. Not entirely. Fae couldn't lie, but they were never sure about the entire story. Why would the Summer Queen not know she was the Summer Queen? Why would it take so long when Winter supposedly changed immediately.

But Tenanye was on fire yet she did not burn.....She wasn't an Elemental. She was Spider. Why was she on fire?

It explained so much, her wanting to find the Hallows, why she wanted to do this now....Why she'd been so secretive. It all made sense.

She was the Summer Queen and she knew it.
Why didn't she tell him?
He made his way to Amelia's chambers and knocked. Just in case she was awake.
Image

Tenanye awoke with a start. Her body ached, her head swam, and she felt unbelievably weak. Why was she here? What happened? Who saw her?

She didn't want anyone to know she was the Summer Queen. The Mortals wouldn't understand. They didn't know the stories, but Severyn would know, if he saw her, he would be upset. She should have told him, but she wasn't sure she was ready for that yet. Speaking it would just make it more real.

She didn't want to be Summer Queen. She didn't want to go to Otherworld and face the Winter King. She didn't want any of that. It wasn't fair.

She knew why it was her. She was curious, she wanted to change, like the Summer King before his fall. She wanted to see the world, explore, learn, she was rare among her kind.

She sat up slowly, and closed her hand over her face. Silent tears falling from her eyes.

She wasn't ready for this yet.

She looked so small and frightened in that bed. Kallias felt his heart ache at the sight of the joyful young woman from that wondrous festival so vulnerable. He bowed his head and sat next to her bed, setting the flowers in the vase next to her bed.

"What happened? I feel strange." She said, "Where is my sister, and Severyn?"

Kallias could have kicked himself. Of course she would want to know what happened to her sister. If he were in her position, his thoughts would immediately turn to his brother. He didn't know what to say, but delaying his answers would make her worry more so he spoke.

"We suffered from an anti-magical attack. You should recover soon. Everyone says it was Queen Fiona, but I don't know why she would do such a thing. Moloch says it was a foolish thing to attempt with little to gain. Severyn is visiting Amelia. I think he is smitten," he told her, trying to lighten up the last bit. Still, he hadn't mentioned her sister and Kallias knew he had to tell her. He'd have been desperate to know if he was in her shoes.

"Empress Tenanye disappeared in the chaos. People are saying as thousand different things, anything from her bursting into flame to eloping with one of the Ashkaran princes."

His voice choked at the mention of the princes. He had seen their bodies.

"I can confirm that the last part isn't true. May Unyielding Mandos look favorably upon them. I..."

Couldn't protect anyone. He thought.

Xiao Jingshen watched Prince Kallias as he walked in, setting flowers down and sitting beside her on the bed. Where those for her? Why?

"We suffered from an anti-magical attack. You should recover soon. Everyone says it was Queen Fiona, but I don't know why she would do such a thing. Moloch says it was a foolish thing to attempt with little to gain. Severyn is visiting Amelia. I think he is smitten," He said, but she couldn't find joy in that. She wanted to, but he didn't speak of her sister, and Xiao Jingshen felt empty. Like a part of her was missing.

"Empress Tenanye disappeared in the chaos. People are saying as thousand different things, anything from her bursting into flame to eloping with one of the Ashkaran princes." He said, and frowned set on her small face. She knew her sister, she wouldn't even marry Severyn and she loved him once, she would never elope...Xiao Jingshen was offended by the comment.

"I can confirm that the last part isn't true. May Unyielding Mandos look favorably upon them. I..."

He said and Xiao Jingshen's eyes weld up. "Prince Kiran....."She peeped. "He....his brothers....They....no, that can't be," She cried and there it was, right in her statement, was proof of her ailment.

She could lie...she knew it to be true, she felt it, Kiran's pain just before...but the words sprang from her lips anyway. "I lied....." She said, looking at him with wide teary eyes. "Prince Kallias... I told an untruth and my throat did not close....I've not choked on my words...."She said, sobbing now. "I am Fae no longer....."She dropped her head in her hands, sobbing into her palm. She had to find her sister.

"We're going to see Fiona." Dorian replied to Zexen’s inquiry while scratching his beard. "She was teleported to our most secure prison, Brikar Prison. Imagine a stronghold that would need an army to both enter and break free from it. The secured gates are the only way in and the only way out. The walls are high and dozens of guards patrol it. We won't be able to use magic once we're inside. The inmates are bounded with sealing tattoos for extra insurance. It's a sight to behold." Dorian finished, picking up his pipe out of his trouser pocket. As he lit the pipe, Dorian looked out over the horizon. The towers of the prison could just be seen over the landscape. They were getting closer. Dorian looked back over to Zexen trying to roast his food. "How do you like the weather here? Paradise, right?"

Zexen couldn’t believe his ears, more mana sapping was to come. The bomb was one horrible thing, the bracelet he was mandated to where for training was another thorn in his side, but now they were going into a prison that was designed to suck the magic out of you. Zexen began to worry if he’d survive it all. He decided that he needed to soon investigate the scope of the relationship between his physical well-being and his mana. During the mana-bomb he felt as if he’d experienced a near death experience. That would certainly be a question for his father or the Blue Faery, however given Valen’s track record of being highly evasive when answering origin questions, Zexen figured that asking the Blue Faery was the way to go. However since neither were nearby at present he’d have to wait.

Zexen replied to Dorian with a fatigued chuckle. ”Yeah the weather here is to die for.” Zexen managed to roast his meat enough to eat it and took several large bites before continuing. ”Valen Alus used to have winters, with snow. I’m the reason it’s a desert climate perpetually. I used to hate winter and one day I wished and prayed with all my might that my country would never see another cold day again. I was about 6 years old then. All I remember is glowing and a light shot from me to the sky parting the clouds. I fainted after that. I woke up in melted snow under a hot sun. We had never had another true winter day since and that was so many years ago. It was difficult for the citizens to adjust to life in a new climate. My father dealt with anyone that was cross with me for what I did. Not even he could fix it.”
Image

Zexen looked up at Dorian and smiled with a glimmer of regret in his eyes. ”I guess your icy training regimine is somewhat a fitting punishment for my making life difficult for my people.”

Soon their ship arrived at Brikar Prison. The place was indeed very large and well-fortified. Zexen could feel the extra fatigue the magic drain was putting on him. It seemed that few others reacted to mana drain like he did. The still had their physical energy whereas he was losing his physical stamina along with his magic. He and Dorian stood outside the prison, Zexen began to look fatigued. He turned to Dorian, ”Do you mind if I at least take the bracelet off while we’re inside? I’m worried it’s all taking too much of a toll on me.”

Once inside the passed through many corridors lined with guardsmen. They all looked tough. Inside this place magic was indeed near impossible to achieve. Zexen wondered how many high risk magical prisoners did Khalidor have to warrant this manner of building. The fatigue was becoming a bit more difficult for Zexen to soldier through. He honestly wanted to grab hold of Dorian for support but he resolved to tough it out for as long as possible. They finally reached Fiona. Zexen was somewhat uneasy about her being locked up. She didn’t seem malicious but he knew looks were often deceiving. Zexen bowed forward respectfully and greeted her.

”Lady Fiona, it is good to see you are relatively well. Although I wish we were meeting under better circumstances.” Zexen turned towards Dorian, ”Dorian, how long must she remain imprisoned? You really think she is responsible for the manabomb?”

"No, no," he reassured her standing up in order to walk over to her. He gripped her shoulder, "This is only temporary. Moloch and I have already regained our powers and other people have as well. Severyn is well too. I am certain that whatever has been done to you, it is temporary. Besides...."

He bent down so that his face was level with hers.

"Even if this is permanent, your sister will still love you. I can tell that much about her even from my brief meeting with her. When she is found, she will not care," he told her. He paused for a moment, trying to find the right words for him to say.

"Whatever happens, I am ever at your service, milady. If your sister is not found soon, I will find her myself. I promise."

My father dealt with anyone that was cross with me for what I did. Not even he could fix it.”

Image

His light heart joke had turned the conversation into a dark story of the past. The power that his pupil spoke of was astounding, as well as terrifying. The power to change the climate of an entire nation was too great. If Zexen did that in Khalidor, Dorian would kill him immediately without hesitation. Thankfully he felt that Zexen wouldn't have the mana to manage that even if he wanted to.

Zexen looked up at Dorian and smiled with a glimmer of regret in his eyes. ”I guess your icy training regimine is somewhat a fitting punishment for my making life difficult for my people.” Dorian looked down at his feet, then at the prison that they had been nearing. It was ironic, that much was true. He felt that he should say something comforting to his student, but no words came to mind. He had things that he hadn't come to terms with either, so how could he lecture on self forgiveness?

The prison was as large as ever, although he noticed that the guns on the wall were new. Apparently they had replaced all of their ballistas with cannon and the spears with muskets. A good combination if a prisoner escaped, after all none of them would stand a chance in close combat with those locked up there. ”Do you mind if I at least take the bracelet off while we’re inside? I’m worried it’s all taking too much of a toll on me.” Dorian waved a hand of approval to Zexen as he spoke to the guards. They were lowered down to the bottom level via elevator. The ropes were strong, but the men on each level with swords ready to cut displayed that the rope could be cut in case of escape. Upon reaching the bottom level, Dorian and Zexen walked to Fiona's heavily guarded cell. Even Dorian could feel his mana being sapped from the various items in the room.

”Lady Fiona, it is good to see you are relatively well. Although I wish we were meeting under better circumstances.” Zexen turned towards Dorian, ”Dorian, how long must she remain imprisoned? You really think she is responsible for the manabomb?” Dorian sat down in a chair across from her cell. She seemed comfortable enough, not luxurious like a castle, but not filth ridden like an inn at the docks either. "Frankly I don't know. The current evidence seems to point towards her involvement in some form. Besides, the senate wants someone to be blamed for the attack and she just happens to be the prime suspect." He scratched his beard again and looked Fiona in the eyes. "This is what's going to happen. You're going to tell me your story of what happened in every detail. If I believe what you tell me then you have nothing to fear. As of the moment, I am you judge, jury..." He pulled pulled a pistol out of his jacket. "And if need be, executioner." He told her, cocking the pistol. "Now start talking."

Arkaelus had been walking along white cliff sides for what felt like hours. The last thing he remembered was being with Tenanye, hearing screaming, then suddenly he was in this new land. The air smelled like fresh citrus flowing through the warm breeze, wild flowers painted the meadows, and various deer roamed the sides of his path. At first he had thought he must have died and gone to Heaven, but Khali was no where in sight. Eventually after all his walking, he came across a man sitting at a table. That man was his brother, Hakvus.

"Where am I?" He asked his deceased brother. Hakvus smiled. "You're in Her realm of course. Your soul remains bound to Earth, but your mind remains here. As for why...I need to warn you." Arkaelus frowned. To be called by Khali or her servants was rarely a good thing, only to advise on grim events. "What is it?"

"There is a snake in your presence brother, an ever growing snake. It feeds on opportunity and chaos, and if not dealt with, will soon grow into a dragon. You must kill that snake, else Khalidor will be doomed and our lineage wiped from the traces of history."

Arkaelus was confused on what his brother was trying to tell him. "A snake? There aren't any snakes, what do you mean?" But before his brother could answer, the world he was in began to shimmer and fade. Then all was black.

Arkaelus woke up in a sweat. He looked around himself to find that he was in an infirmiry. He found Tenanye in the bed to his right, already awake and looking just as nerved as he was. His head felt heavy and like it was going to explode. "That must of been one hell of a night." He said as he tried to sit up. "Are you all right?"

"No, no," Prince Kallias said, moving to her, getting a firm but gentle grip on her shoulder. She could only stare with wide eyes. "This is only temporary. Moloch and I have already regained our powers and other people have as well. Severyn is well too. I am certain that whatever has been done to you, it is temporary. Besides...." He said, and that was a relief, to a certain to degree, but then Humans could lie, they spoke untruths, even if it was only to make someone feel better. Of course, Severyn was fine, he was Elvish, he wasn't born of magic, he could use it, but wasn't born of it, like her, so who was to say if she'd get her Fae back. Kallias knelled down, eye level with hers. She could see the subtle difference between him and Severyn, how even though they both had kind eyes, Kallias' was more innocent like a child's, where Severyn's was older, wiser in a way.

"Even if this is permanent, your sister will still love you. I can tell that much about her even from my brief meeting with her. When she is found, she will not care," He spoke and Xiao Jingshen looked down at her hands in her lap, blanketed by the sheets. Of course, Tennye would not care, even when the whole of Anansai tried her less, because she was half human, Tenanye never cared, not once, in fact, she probably loved her more because of it.
"Whatever happens, I am ever at your service, milady. If your sister is not found soon, I will find her myself. I promise." He said, and Xiao Jingshen looked up at him, a smile briefly tugged at her lips. "You are so kind, Prince Kallias." She said, and graced him with a small kiss to his cheek.

Image

Tenanye felt him shift before he spoke and only cut her eyes in his direction as he spoke. That must of been one hell of a night." He said and Tenanye made no move, she just waited for him to get his barrings, clearly he could not remember what happened and thought it was some result of his apparently hallucinatory grog. "Are you all right?"

"Quite the opposite." She said grimly. " You're kingdom was attacked....Magic.....someone used magic to distrust those with magic. That's all that have pieced together thus far." She said, clearly he did not see nor remember her succumbing to the effects of the manabomb and that was a good thing. Not that any of them would understand the significance of her bursting into flames,
Mortals knew little of Faeries as it were, they would not know who she really was....so her plans were still in place.

"What do you remember?" She asked. "You must try." She said, trying to keep her thoughts from going to her sister. If anything, she would guess that Severyn, to whom she'd given her first Faery Kiss too, was with her and she could feel he was fine so Xiao Jingshen would be too.

It was funny. He had been kissed countless times by many woman, but a small kiss to the cheek made him blush like a youth. This woman was utterly without guile and her actions came from the heart. It made her smile more precious than any gem, he decided. Without thinking, he he placed a hand on her cheek before dropping it and smiling at her sheepishly.

"Thank you. It's a luxury from being the younger son, I think," he confessed. He was glad that the throne was not his burden to bear. He had seen how it had changed Moloch since his parents died. His manner grew colder and more calculated each passing day. Sometimes, he could not tell where King Moloch ended and his brother began. His courtship of Aada seemed to have allowed his brother to shine through more often, but it disturbed him.

"I could never be king. A king has to look for the darkness in the hearts of others, but I'd rather see the beauty. There is so much beauty in this world and Lila continues to show me such wonders that I could scarcely imagine before so I believe that everything always turns out well in the end. Even this attack can't mar this city forever. Nor you."

__Luin Elen/ Father Superior__
__(The Blue Faery)__
Image

The Blue Faery had made it back to Khalidor as swiftly as he could. He wanted more than anything to warn Empress Tenanye however he had no knowledge of where she was yet alone if she was injured at all due to the Mana bomb. He decided he would have to locate her after speaking with King Moloch. In pixie size among full sized humans, Father Superior flew about in search of the Drake king. As he passed by people they looked on in awe and some thought they were imagining things. One man shouted the he must have been still feeling the effects of the bomb, to which Father Superior found slightly amusing.

Having little luck locating Moloch, Father Superior decided to use a locator spell. He could tell that the atmosphere was still slightly effected by the mana-bomb. Spells would work but with a minor static-like interference. A floating trail of faery dust floated about the air leading Father Superior to the room Moloch was currently. There was a guard standing by as expected. As the blue glow of the faery bishop approached, the guard was alerted and stood in front of the door.

“What business do you have here faery? I cannot permit you to enter.” The tall and broad warrior stated as he towered above the floating pixie sized Blue Faery.

Image

Blue smiled and then calmly replied, “I am the Blue Faery, Arch Bishop of Anansai. I have come with a very important message for King Moloch of Drake City. It is of the utmost urgency that I speak with him.” Father Superior could have simply put the guard to sleep using a sleeping spell but that would not have been very diplomatic. Better to be safe than sorry, he thought.

The guard, took a moment to size the pixie up and consider the request. Ultimately he decided to ask the king. He turned around and entered room, closing the door behind him. ”Sire, The Blue Faery, Arch Bishop of Anansai is here. He says that he must speak with your highness. He claims it is a matter of great importance. Shall I grant him passage my lord?” The gurned kneeled down on one knee as he spoke to his king.

After a few moments the Guard returned from the room and opened the door for the Blue Faery to enter. Father Superior thanked the guard for considering his request and flew into the room. There sat King Moloch with the old Mage Cyrus, Father Superior had recognized Cyrus from the past. The two had encountered one another however neither of them alluded to this happening other than a subtle knowing glance exchanged between the two. Father Superior bowed to Moloch.

”Your Majesty, King Moloch, I have come with a matter most pressing and urgent. I was asked to deliver a letter for you. It hails from Sir Francis Pendragon and Lady Vanessa of Valyria. He has taken drastic measures to ensure this reaches your attention as swiftly as possible. Drake City is in grave danger. The details are provided in this letter written by Sir Francis.” Father Superior pointed his wand forward delicately and with a faint blue flash the letter appeared before the Drake King. It floated in the air, returned to normal size.

{The letter read as follows:}

”Beloved Friend, Moloch,

I am writing you this letter in great haste as it is regarding a matter of the utmost urgency. I have received confirmation that Haviir Kabuk of the Volantian Confederacy is conspiring with the queen of Valyria to wage war on Drake City in your absence. I have included a list of task coordinates on the back of this letter. My wife and I wanted to warn you for your sake and that of your nation. A great fae sorceress has also offered assistance with the matter. Our queen has been tempted by the fae witch to assist with this invasion as well as assassinate the Empress of Anansai.

I have asked the Blue Faery to deliver this message to you since I cannot be at your side. Vanessa and I are in your corner. I will do what I can to assist you. However I must tread carefully, my wife and I have technically committed treason in forewarning you. You, my dearest friend, and Drake, my home, are always in my heart. Fare thee well Moloch, and please return home as soon as possible. Your people need their King.

Sincerely Your Friend,
Governor Francis Pendragon"

Father Superior floated in the air, his dragonfly like wings beating against the air, as Moloch read the letter. He hoped that Empress Tenanye was alright.

”Sire, The Blue Faery, Arch Bishop of Anansai is here. He says that he must speak with your highness. He claims it is a matter of great importance. Shall I grant him passage my lord?”

Moloch raised an eyebrow at the guard's comment. He did not know much about the Blue Faery of Anansai beyond rumors of wishes granted and magic different than and more powerful than humlan conjuring. With a glance as Cyrus, Moloch motioned for the guard to permit him to enter. He bestowed upon his visitor with his most gracious smile.

"We welcome you, Father Superior. I would offer you some wine," he said, pouring the faery a goblet of the vintage he and Cyrus had been sharing with one another beforehand, ignoring the glance shared between his oldest advisor and his visitor. He would have to question Cyrus about this later. It was a testament to Moloch's self-control that his motions remained the same as he heard the Anansai's next words. He set down the wine and took the letter wordlessly, his expression darkening as he read his old friend's words. He passed it over to Cyrus and he regard Father Superior seriously.

"You have done me a great service. Haviir has been recklessly spending money to the extent that I planned on using his debt to neutralize his threat. I confess that I had not expected he would take such reckless action so soon, even allying with the mad king..."

"I will inform King Arkaelus and Empress Tenanye at once of the threat to Drake and her life. I believe I can convince him that it is time that Valyria have a new king," Cyrus announced.

Moloch nodded in assent before turning to Father Superior, "I have heard rumors of your order's power, Father Superior. Would you be capable and willing to take me home so that I might defend my people?"

"If that is so, I would request that I say goodbye to my brother and let him know of his responsibilities here before I go... As well as say goodbye to Princess Aada."

I wish you were here, Francis. Gods keep you safe in the viper's nest. Moloch though for a moment before focusing his full attention on the matter at hand. Francis could be helped with his worries. He owed it to his people and his friend to make good use of his warning.

Normally, Cyrus was quick with quip and a laugh when dealing with fools, but now wasn't the time for his normally leisurely approach to life. He knew from firsthand experience how fast Fae could travel and if there was one powerful enough to threaten the Empress, her agents could be here even now, while the Empress was unwell.

"Lord Cyrus, you cannot enter the infirmary at this time," a guard began. In response, the old magi tapped his staff against his chest.

"The Blue Faery himself came to myself and my liege with a warning of an attack on our home and treachery against her by one of her own subjects. Assassins could be here even now, perhaps in collaboration with whoever perpetrated this attack on your own people. So, be a good soldier and let me through! And send men to Princess Xiao's chambers to secure her and Prince Kallias. Go!"

Aada sat by her brother's bed, watching over him while he slept. The room around them was quiet. Most people affected by the blast had sustained superficial injuries and had been treated reasonably quickly by the meisters. Arim's case had been a little more complex. By all rights he shouldn't have survived the blast itself. She knew she was lucky to not be burying her brother. The gods had truly smiled on him by allowing him to survive. She turned the pages of her book, the words blurring as she skimmed over them. A groan came from the bed. Aada looked up to see Arim's eyes fluttering open.

Arim ran his tongue along his lips. His mouth felt like sand. He looked around and his gaze came to a rest on his sister. "Aada?"

Aada pressed a beaker into his hand, gently lifting both to his mouth. As the cool liquid poured down his throat, soothing the rawness, he took a moment to look at Aada. She looked drained. Her face seemed tighter than usual. She brushed a lock of her hair from her face as he drank. Her movements looked slower, more careful, as though each one cost precious energy that seemed to be a finite resource. "Are you well?" he asked.

"I'm fine," she answered, her eyes just failing to meet his. Her voice was unusually quiet. "It's yourself you should be worrying about."

"Have the meisters said anything?"

Aada shook her head, "Only little things. Your hearing might be slightly off, and they'll have to see how your leg heals."

Arim frowned. While it certainly explained why she sounded so quiet, Aada's explanation did raise one question, "What about my leg?" he asked, reaching for the blanket.

Aada snatched his hand away and held it against his chest. "A lot of debris from the blast landed on you. Arim, it's a miracle Cinnabar still has a king. They've done what they can to heal the wounds, but it's in the hands of the Gods now."

Arim lay back, his gaze focused on the ceiling. "Of course it is." He was silent a moment, and then, "How is King Moloch?"

Aada shrugged, "I don't know. I've spent most of my time in here." That would explain why she looked tired, Arim thought. "But I can tell you that Dorian has been placed in charge of Khalidor unti the dust settles at least."

Arim nodded. He vaguely remembered his conversation with Dorian while the man brought him to the meisters. He was a good, strong man, the kind Khalidor needed to lead it at the moment. He looked across the Aada, "You don't have to stay here."

"And where else would I go?"

Arim grinned, "Oh I don't know, you could go and find Moloch. Aren't you two supposed to be, what is the word I'm looking for? Courting?"

"You are impossible."

Bastian looked over at the folded parchment on his desk. One from the King, the other a scorch note from the Princess. The edges of Aada's letter still glowed. It had clearly been sent in haste, with a great deal of energy behind it. She had probably exhausted herself in the process.

He picked up the King's letter first. He frowned as he read the contents. While even he couldn't deny an alliance with Drake, the marriage would put something of a dent in his plans for the princess. Still, the best feature of a good plan is that it can bend without breaking. The marriage affair was nothing more than a hiccup. Noting the King's concern of Sphex, Bastian pushed the letter aside. The matter could be dealt with later.

Bastian picked up Aada's letter. He turned the parchment over in his hand. Yes, she was powerful. He lifted the seal and read the familiar penmanship.

My dear friend,
Khalidor has been attacked by some unknown magic. The citadel lies in ruins and the people are lost. Many have died in the attack and many more have been injured, Arim among them. The meisters say he will live, but there is little they can do with some of his injuries. He was at the centre of the blast, Bastian, it is a miracle he even lives. They fear his hearing may not be the same. His leg was badly damaged in the blast. The meisters have done what they can, now Arim's recovery is in the hand's of our Gods. Pray for him my friend.
Aada.

Well, Bastian mused, isn't that interesting.

"We welcome you, Father Superior. I would offer you some wine," Moloch said, pouring the Blue Faery a goblet. Father Superior accepted the goblet however as he was currently pixie sized. Not wanting to shift to human size Father Superior with the point of his wand altered the size of the goblet to one more accommodating for a pixie sized being.

Moloch took the letter wordlessly, his expression darkening as he read his old friend's words. He passed it over to Cyrus and he regard Father Superior seriously. "You have done me a great service. Haviir has been recklessly spending money to the extent that I planned on using his debt to neutralize his threat. I confess that I had not expected he would take such reckless action so soon, even allying with the mad king..."

Father Superior replied with a slightly somber tone. ”This matter effects both our lands. I fear that the fallout will impact many beyond the borders of Anansai, Drake City, and Valyria.”

As well as say goodbye to Princess Aada." Moloch concluded.

Travel cross the map was simple for a wishing star faery. However it required spells for the transport of another. Father Superior nodded affirmatively to Moloch’s request. ”It is indeed possible. With the proper items I can cast a spell to open a portal to your home realm.” The Blue Faery held out a closed hand, and gracefully opened it to reveal a glowing bean.

Image

”This is a magic bean. It is the first item necessary in creating a temporary magic gateway. Magic beans are rare and precious treasure to our realm. A portal opened by a magic bean could potentially send you anywhere. That is where the second item comes into play. You will need an item from your realm, one that is native to and symbolic of where you wish to travel. This will focus the path between gateways so that you are sent to your desired destination. Once you have said item, I will enchant it so that it will transport you without fail. Please call upon me when you are ready.” Father Superior explained.

The Blue Faery flew closer to Moloch and tossed the bean into his hand. The bean increased in size enough so that it would be the natural size of an average bean. ”Should you or Drake City require the aide of the Wishing Star Faeries you’ll have our help. I must gather the faeries that have come to aid the wounded. It seems there are preparations that must be made considering this turn of events.” Blue said calmly. He could feel that things would likely soon turn for the worse for everyone.

Her vision was nothing but darkness punctuated by bursts of bright multi-coloured light and sound. Screams and cries of pain deafened her, caused her to clutch her head with her hands over her ears to lessen the impact. The screams began to fade and were replaced with a cruel laughter as blood trickled between her fingertips, causing her own screams to begin anew the crescendo of madness that surrounded her.

Fiona let out a cry and sat bolt upright, her hands pawing at her face as the memory of the dream remained vivid in her mind. She stared around the unfamiliar room, her panic subsiding along as she tried to organise her thoughts and analyse her situation. As she eased herself towards the edge of the cot her body felt as if it was suffering from being both on fire and being frozen, the was such that her eyes welled with tears. She sat for several minutes, breathing as slow and deeply as she dared to calm her reactions even as she winced with each intake of breath. She stood carefully and tentatively moved towards the nearby water basin, her eyes snapping shut as the pain shot through her with each step. It felt like an eternity before her skin brushed against the smooth stone, her hands gripping it tightly before slipping into the cool water.

She stared into the rippling liquid, watching her distorted reflection for a moment before glancing up to examine it clearly in the mirror embedded in the wall. The face that stared back was much paler than she’d expected with her hair unkempt and hanging down loosely around her face, her skin was paler than usual but crisscrossed with hundreds of small cuts that seemed to shimmer slightly almost as if they were made of a faint light after it was refracted through a prism. Her eyes were a stark contrast to her overall dishevelled state given that they seemed to almost glow, however the iris of both appeared to have cracked slightly from whatever impact she had received in the aftermath of last night.

The sound of the door to what could best be termed her cell, which despite its relative comfort it was still a cage if a somewhat gilded one, distracted her from this inspection as two figures entered, closing the door firmly behind them. She remembered both as the pair she’d watched duel which intrigued her as to why they were the first to come see her here. However given her resentment at the present situation there was little chance of her taking their words as anything more than lip service, but despite this she stifled her anger and nodded in as warm a greeting to the younger Fae as she could manage. Once they had both said their part it was easily apparent how wafer thin the pleasantries had truly been, especially when her captor aimed a weapon in her direction to encourage her cooperation.

”Now start talking.”

Fiona frowned slightly, her eyes moving slowly between both of her visitors and the barrel of pistol. Her view of these foreigners had certainly deteriorated rather heavily in the past few hours, not least with their uninspiring duels, inability to engage in proper discourse and the habit of dying on her being prime examples that came to mind. Though it had finally hit rock bottom as far as she was concerned, either way she lacked much alternative so instead she simply shook her head in disappointment turned her momentary frown into an grim smile as she nodded in acquiescence to Dorian.

”You certainly seem to be exercising a guilty until proven innocent approach but I’d expect nothing less given the situation. However I do find fault with your assumption since it lays at my feat a serious level of incompetence on my part, especially given my current incarceration” And to clarify her meaning she gestured slightly towards the barred door and thick rune covered walls around them.

”But I digress. The events of last night… I can only imagine the aftermath. For that I offer my apologies for your nation’s loss. While I am neither the one who orchestrated the attack on your city, nor the one who carried it out I should, and can take responsibility for the weapon used. My people were once seen as the stewards of magic, mostly because in earlier ages we were able to enforce such a lofty title, but during this time we not viewed in the best light as our approach could be heavy handed against known threats.

The world was just as filled with those of magical ability as it is today and as such my people required the means to deal with problems as they arose, requiring us to forge weapons to bring to bear if the stability of the world was threatened. Alas it was one such weapon that was employed last night by someone who has acquired it from an unknown source since my people are no longer capable of such. In fact our empire lies in shambles, with many foraging for food and water and edges of crumbling cities that were once marvellous of the age.”

Her voice drained a little as she reluctantly admitted the ruin of her homelands before continuing.

”I would like to help you find this person, or persons should they have accomplices. I wish to find out how they have gained hidden knowledge of my ancestors and why they seek to upset the already shaken balance of nations present in your land.”

Dorian sat silently as he listened to Fiona talk about her homeland. It was a much different description then what he had thought of it. When he was young, his caretakers would tell him stories of Kythiania. They said long ago it was a land of magic, much like Anansai, but ruled by humans. It traded it's treasures all across the Jade until going into sudden isolation. Now there were only rumors of golden cities from merchants telling tall tales. He had assumed that the country would have some wealth to trade, however, from what Fiona was informing him that didn't seem to be the case.

”I would like to help you find this person, or persons should they have accomplices. I wish to find out how they have gained hidden knowledge of my ancestors and why they seek to upset the already shaken balance of nations present in your land.

"Your word is enough for me." Dorian said, waving the guard to open her cell. "I'm sure we'll find the real culprits of the attack, but until that day, we must prepare ourselves. I would like to offer your country a defensive pact with Khalidor. In exchange for open borders we will send shipments of food, weapons, and building material to help your nation rebuild. You'll also need cash if you want to rebuild your homeland to its former glory. How does half a million ducats sound? Then a monthly shipment for the next few years." It was quite a bit of money, but if Kythiana could be rebuilt, it could serve as a valuable ally and trading partner to Khalidor.
