XX Rika

This isn't the longest it's taken Rika to make progress on an assignment, nor has it been the most difficult, nor has her charge been the most insufferable. But damn has it been the most boring.

Two and a half weeks have passed since Rika was assigned to one Tachibana Ichika, and it's been the most repetitive two weeks of Rika's second life. 7am, wake up. 9am, school. 4pm, study. 9pm, sleep. Rinse and repeat. Bi-weekly student council meetings have been the only deviation from this routine, and helpful as those meetings were, they were also incredibly uninteresting.

Does this girl do anything besides study? Rika's not too hopeful.

She learns through their nightly rendezvous that Yua is having a similar problem with her charge, which has Rika laughing- of course the two workaholics belong together.

Problem is, it's not exactly easy to get them together when they're both too busy studying.

One night, after Ichika has finally gone to sleep, Rika sets aside the book she snatched from the school library and leaves to meet with Yua. She finds her easily enough- Yua is the only customer in the cafe, and in her face Rika sees the same frustration she's been feeling since they began.

Rika feels a little bad for Yua. After all, this is her first assignment as a cupid. It seems a shame that her first job has her stuck with a fake prince, day in and day out.

"
I have a feeling we may need to choose another approach," she says, a tired smile playing on her lips. "It seems these two aren't going to be doing us any favors by making it easy."

So, things weren’t going the way Yua thought they would be going when she pictured being a cupid in her head. Her first case was taking longer than she expected. It also seemed like it was longer than most cases by the sight of seeing Rika, her partner, frustrated. As she lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling above her she grabbed her Shiba pillow and silently screamed into it. Maybe the problem was her? Oh god it’s my fault isn’t it, I’m slowing us down, aren’t I?

When she realised her purpose was love, she was well…in love with the idea and didn’t even think about the fact that she had lost her memories and her entire life behind. After all, Yua was frantic about love and romance and she could tell her previous self was too by the shelves of shoujo manga on her bedroom walls. But this was difficult, more so than she thought but of course, it would be; humans are complex beings with even more complicated emotions. Yua let out a big sigh and sat up, pouting ever so slightly at the thought of having to bring together two people like Ichika and Nao. When she first saw Nao she swore he had come straight out of a shoujo manga as the prince, and Ichika was the perfect student partner for him to fall in love with. The competition between the two added such fire!

But no, the fire was fizzling away before Yua’s eyes and she couldn’t help but feel like it was her fault. As she jumped off her bed, she grabbed her cardigan and made her way downstairs, making sure she was quiet enough not to wake up her parents and slipped outside. Before long she found herself in a small café that was still open during the night and sat down in the corner, letting out another sigh.

After asking for some hot cocoa from the server, she heard some footsteps towards her table and looks up to see Rika. ”I’m sorry Rika,” she whispered guiltily, “I’m slowing things down aren’t I?” With another sigh, she added ”But I agree, maybe we have to be more…direct?”

XX Rika

Rika had expected Yua to feel a bit down-on-her-luck, because so did she, despite her experience. What she didn't expect was for Yua to apologize and shoulder the blame for their slow progress.

"
Oh Yua-chan, you're not slowing things down at all!"

Rika reaches across the table and takes Yua's hand in hers. "
You've done nothing wrong There's no deadline to think about, no need to rush. Some assignments just take a lot longer than we expect. Especially if the humans involved aren't actually interested in each other yet. But it would help to try something new. We're not getting anywhere doing what we're doing."

Thinking back on the past few weeks, Rika considers what they've tried thus far. She's swapped Ichika and Nao's books, or hidden them in places where they'd have to run into each other. She's tried dropping date-night coupons on their desks next to the other's student council paperwork.

They've done an awful lot to try and get the two teenagers thinking about each other, but none of it has managed to get either of them out of the house, much less together.

Rika lets out a sigh. More direct, huh? What would be the easiest way to achieve that?

"
I can think of a few options on how to involve ourselves in their lives more, but anything we do to get particularly close has the potential to be... complicated. Any ideas, Yua-chan?"

Rika gives Yua the chance to offer a suggestion, praying she isn't putting the poor girl on the spot.

The server had come and left her hot cocoa without Yua even noticing but once she did, she took a large sip, thankful for the hot liquid rushing down her throat.

Yua felt the warmth spread as Rika took her hand and responded to her with a small sad shrug. ” These two are just…so wrapped around studying that they don’t even look up and see that life is passing them by,” she exclaimed.

Perhaps Yua deep inside felt almost a tinge of jealously that here were two perfectly human individuals, destined to be in love and experience such an amazing feeling but instead were too busy with their heads in books and ignoring everyday life. After all, Yua loved love, but from what she assumes never experienced it herself.

As she released another deep sigh, she looked around the barren café and tried to think. What more could they do to get these two together? Both her and Rika had done so much without anything really progressing other than Ichika and Nao just having a student relationship. Nao seemed more like someone who found Ichika a competition, but he didn’t seem to dislike her which was something.
After a few seconds of musing, Yua looked straight at Rika with a huge smile. Of course! Why didn’t I think of this earlier? She thought to herself.

”We need to be more direct!” She shouted excitedly, not realising that she was being loud. ”We need to be students and instead of pushing them in secret, do it in person!”

XX Rika

It takes a moment, but Rika's patience pays off. She gets to watch the cogs move in Yua's head, can see the exact moment inspiration sparks. Yua grins from ear to ear and announces her plan:

"
We need to be students and instead of pushing them in secret, do it in person!"

"
Ah," Rika exclaims. She hadn't even considered that angle. "That's actually quite clever. We will need to be careful, and cautious, but I think you're right. If those two are going to put school above love, we might just have to show them how inviting young love can be!"

XX Yoshida Nao

Nao has never really believed in ghosts, but enough has happened in a few short weeks to make him think they might just be real, and that there's one haunting either him or his house.

Haunting him, most likely, because things only ever seem to go missing from his bedroom.

In just under three weeks, Nao has lost notebooks, textbooks, his favorite pencil, the batteries to his desk lamp, his phone, and his entire schoolbag. And while he found everything eventually - in different parts of the house, including the backyard - he's convinced something doesn't like him.

Or perhaps just really hates school. It doesn't slip Nao's attention that the stolen items all have to do with school in some way, though he's not quite sure why a dead dropout would haunt him.

The more he thinks about the logistics of his maybe-ghost, the more outlandish the idea seems.

Nao does his best to ignore the problem, though it does start to get on his nerves the third time he has to track down his homework and finds it in one of the kitchen cupboards. What purpose does a ghost have in hiding things? They're not even trying that hard to get rid of the things they steal.

Then one night he comes back into his room after showering to find his manga shelf has been reorganized. Or rather, books have been pulled out and put back in the wrong places.

He doesn't fix the shelf, doesn't want to put any more energy into the idea. But try as he might, Nao ends up distracted from his studies by conjured images of some hikikomori floating around his room, reading his manga and watching him sleep. Nao doesn't sleep well that night, all told.

The next morning, nothing has been moved, not even the still-unorganized manga on his shelf.

Nao silently hopes his maybe-ghost is gone for good.

School is expectedly normal, the normal amount of classmates stopping Nao on his way to class and initiating conversations that are the normal amount of bland. Nao puts on his princely smile and converses, then files away the new names he's learned and prays no one else bothers him.

A perfectly normal morning.

At least, perfectly normal on the surface.

It isn't until Nao takes his seat in class that he realizes something is different. The desk in front of his, which was perfectly empty the day before, now holds a head of blonde hair he's never seen.

He expects the homeroom teacher to announce a transfer student when she walks in. She doesn't. He then expects his classmates to question the new girl when they see her. They don't. No one so much as bats an eye at her existence until halfway through homeroom, when Tachibana takes the chalkboard to discuss some new school decorum and her gaze lingers on the new girl.

It's then that Nao realizes there's another girl he's never seen sitting in this classroom, and as if by some miracle, he can see Tachibana realize too. At least now he knows he's not seeing things.

Something strange was happening but Ichika didn’t put much thought into it. These past few weeks it seemed as if the universe was trying to draw out the worst in her; from missing books, finding random coupons and just, in general, seeing more of Yoshida than she ever had in the entire time they have been in school together.

Again, strange but not problematic. Ichika carried on with her life as usual regardless of the minor inconveniences that were occurring. Her day mostly consisted of academics, even at home. She was in charge of the household and would be up early hours to go for a run to start the day, make lunches for everyone and catch up on some light reading if she had time. Ichika also arrived at school earlier than the average student to sort out student council affairs and help teachers regardless of her president role in the student council. In general, the school and those in it were so used to Ichika doing administration and helping that they placed almost everything that they could on her (if they had enough good excuses that was).

However, because she oversees a lot in school and discusses things with administration and teachers regularly; she was surprised to see two new students join in without anyone even batting an eye. What about all the procedures and introductions? It was as if they just appeared all of a sudden which quite frankly, they did. Ichika can quite vividly remember one day going through registration without seeing these two students’ names and then the next day they suddenly appeared. Now that was not normal.
But regardless Ichika’s policy was to just ignore and carry on if things weren’t outrightly impacting her academic life. She ignored the two new students even though everyone including the staff was interacting with them like they’ve been here for years. What could she do? Cause a scene about it?

During homeroom as Ichika had to discuss some changes and gather the student’s attention her eyes fell upon Yua and Rika slightly longer than usual but remained neutral and unaffected. After all they weren’t doing anything to her and she hardly paid attention to the social aspects of school much to care.
But it is weird how everyone seems to know them.. She pondered.

Yua was excited to be back at school, after all once she was reborn as a cupid human purpose was no longer necessary and using magic, she was able to manipulate her parents’ memories into thinking she was still a student. She didn’t really remember her human student self much but from what she gathered doing research about herself through various photo albums, letters and talking to her parents it seemed like Yua really enjoyed school and had plenty of friends. These friends in the beginning when she was in the hospital kept visiting and the bittersweet thing about being a cupid meant that she had to erase their memories of her and move on.

But here she was, wearing a super cute uniform and sitting directly in front of Nao the prince! Although she followed him around from afar and knew all about his impact on the those around him, seeing him in person and seeing girls fawn over him was a whole different experience. It was also nice that she wasn’t so alone even though technically everyone had memories of her and Rika so they treated her nicely. Plus, with her outgoing and bubbly personality, it wasn’t so hard to fit in and make friends. That was the troubling part, Yua had to keep reminding herself she was not a normal human student, but a cupid and once this assignment was over, she would have to move on.

She hadn’t yet spoken to Nao, mostly because she was nervous about the thought of not being able to see him as her charge – not a friend. But she would watch him talk to her peers, observe in secret although Yua wasn’t so good at being covert about all of this as she should be.

Ichika seemed to be someone with a lot of status and respect but honestly, she seemed intimidating. Thank god Rika was her charge because Yua wouldn’t know how to work with her, plus it seemed Rika was a good fit! Somehow, they seemed more similar than she and Nao did anyway.

XX Rika

Being visible in a school for the first time in maybe-years is strange at first, but it doesn't take too long for Rika to adjust, her classmates' fabricated memories resulting in a lot of friendly faces.

Having to actually sit through classes, however, is not so easy to adjust to.

It's quite boring, really, learning all these things she already knows, and the competitive nature of the student body doesn't help one bit. Rika's finds herself bored out of her mind by the third hour, and she starts to wonder if perhaps being stuck in class all day is counterproductive to their plan.

Rika can't bring herself to voice the opinion, however, because Yua is happy. Elated, even. Rika knows Yua is young, died young, probably didn't even finish school during her life. And while it's by no means permanent, this is almost like Yua's second chance- the pinnacle of her second life.

So Rika bites her tongue and does her best to find something about school life to enjoy. That one something ends up being people-watching, and Rika spends all of class watching others.

Watching Ichika and Nao, particularly.

From her seat in the back row, Rika has the perfect vantage point for spying on their human charges, and it proves to be... rather uneventful, all things considered. The two keep their eyes either on the teacher or on their notes throughout every single class, and even between classes, the two remain firmly in their seats, undisturbed by the idle chatter all around them.

Rika almost wants to pull her hair out with how difficult this assignment is proving to be.

When lunch period rolls around, Rika is glad for the chance to stretch her legs, even if her cupid body can't actually get sore. She gravitates to Yua's desk, slyly eyeing Nao as she does.

"
Yua-chan," She says, taking the empty seat in front of Yua and leaning close. "It may be a bit more of a risk, but I think direct action is going to involve us interacting with them."

Rika catches Nao watching her from behind them, and there's an uncomfortable glint in his eye when she shoots him a sweet smile. Rika prays he isn't already suspecting foul play. It wouldn't be the first time she's been discovered, but in this case, it'll be far more of a pain if she is.

Look away, fake prince. You may be my assignment but I'll be damned if I'm rooting for you.

XX Yoshida Nao

Nao watches from the corner of his eye, watches the second strange girl watching him when she approaches the first strange girl, watches them whisper to each other before him.

It's like they're the best of friends, and really, that isn't too much of a surprise, Nao thinks.

He still has no explanation for why or how the two managed to appear out of nowhere and have not a single person either question or justify their existence, and it bugs him. Is this some kind of practical joke the class cooked up, where he's the only one out of the loop?

Him and Tachibana, possibly. He's still not sure.

Nao sits and watches the girls for a little longer. The brunette catches him watching and smiles politely, and a part of Nao swears it's just as fake as the equally polite smile he gives in response.

At least now he's learned one of the girls' names- Yua. Strange name.

The girls appear to finish their hushed conversation and start simply eating lunch, and that's when Nao decides he's seen enough for now, escaping to find peace and quiet someplace else.

Yet despite his effort to purge the topic from his mind, Nao's thoughts wander back to the strange girls in class, and he almost ignores a classmate calling his name while he's lost in thought. After the girl disappears, Nao frowns at his lack of an answer, and then it hits him- if they're students, then wouldn't their information be included in attendance records and the school registry?

All paperwork that should be in the student council room, stacked in a neat pile on the podium.

Nao heads for the council room, in his head milling through a list of the students in their class so that he can pick out the irregularities when he sees the paperwork. He doesn't get that far, though- the second he opens the door to the student council room, he's met with a familiar face:

Tachibana Ichika. The student council President.

Nao steps back and smiles. "
Ah, excuse me, Tachibana-san. I just came to look at some of my paperwork from the meeting earlier this week." He lies, hoping she won't ask questions.

Ichika rarely spent the free periods and breaks in the classroom or with her peers; this included lunch. Most of the time she spent her lunches in the student council room with her green tea and a pile of paperwork to rummage through. People would be surprised how much work it took to be the student council president which is why those who had the role mostly did it for the academic merit they would gain for universities applications. Ichika, on the other hand, needed this role to fuel her identity but also shield her from becoming a useless outsider with nothing to distract the loneliness that came with along with it.

With a sigh she stood up and made her way to the large window, leaning against it and looking down below at her laughing peers. She wondered what it was like to be so carefree.

Before she knew it, Ichika ends up getting lost in her thoughts but only for a moment as the door opening snaps her out of it. Her gaze falls onto Yoshida Nao, a member of the student council commonly known as the school’s prince by many of the students and someone she’s been seeing more often it seems.

Ichika nods as a response and makes her way back to the desk and takes a seat. Just as she was about to take another sip of her tea, she realises that it had already gotten cold so with another sigh she looks back at the paperwork.

Oh… She thought to herself, looking over back at Yoshida, ”Yoshida – san, about the meeting on planning a school trip, I’ve been getting a lot of mixed feedback from the students,” Ichika grabbed her small notebook which she carried around with her at all times and opened it up. ”I was hoping maybe you could talk to the class since they respond to you better to try and narrow it down to one option.

Image

Before long it becomes time for lunch and Yua pulls out the bento box her mother made for her as always. Except for this time, she actually eats it at school rather than at the park if she’s not meeting with Rika when she was not a student. As she takes a bite out of her onigiri, wiping the rice crumbs from her mouth she looks up to see Rika and grins widely. Yua quickly gulps down her food and nods in excitement.

”We need to be friends with them!” She whispered, taking extra care not to be loud. Yua was known to naturally speak in a loud voice, she blames it on her bubbly and excitable nature but being a cupid meant she needed to be more covert than overt now.

Yua follows Rika’s eyes towards Nao but doesn’t dare look back to look at him. Although she could be quite oblivious at times, even Yua couldn’t ignore the stares she received from Nao which oddly made her feel shy and embarrassed.

”I think what we should do is approach our charges and befriend them…and then naturally we’ll form a friendship group since we’re friends anyway.” Yua nodded to herself. After all, if she befriended Nao and Rika befriended Ichika, then they could then do more social activities together.

XX Yoshida Nao

Tachibana does not, in fact, ask questions, just nods in greeting and sips her tea without a word.

Nao steps past her to sift through the filing cabinet, opening a couple drawers at once in the hopes of keeping her from recognizing what he's after. The file he wants is in view when she speaks;

"
Yoshida-san," She calls, and Nao turns to find her bright eyes on him. "About the meeting on planning a school trip- I’ve been getting a lot of mixed feedback from the students." Nao nods, unsurprised and fully aware of where this is going. "I was hoping maybe you could talk to the class since they respond to you better to try and narrow it down to one option."

This is actually quite common. Even though Tachibana is charismatic and friendly with others, she just doesn't hold the same influence over others that Nao does, despite her being President.

Nao slips the school registry from the past few month's in with his regular paperwork and shuts the filing cabinet, shooting Tachibana a thin smile. "
I'll do what I can, Tachibana-kaichou."

There's the slightest hint of sarcasm in his tone, and Nao prays Tachibana is none the wiser to it.

XX Rika

"We need to be friends with them!"

Rika nods her agreement- that was exactly what she'd been thinking. After all, what better way to set two people up than to get on their good sides and push them together from the sidelines?

At least, it was a hell of a lot better than trying to get them together through subtle imagery.

"
That's a good idea," she says with a smile. "But it might be suspicious if we both go at it at the same time. One of us might need to be a little more sneaky..."

Rika's distracted gaze falls upon the chalkboard at the front of the room. Still written to the side in neat characters are the options for the class trip, which Ichika had presented to them earlier.

Seeing it sets a lightbulb aglow in Rika's mind.

"
Yua-chan, you go ahead and make friends with Yoshida-kun. I think you'll have a lot of luck with that- he seems nice enough." It's a lie, a badly disguised lie, and Rika sends a silent threat to Yoshida that if he so much as slightly disappoints Yua, she'll have his head.

With that thought out of the way, Rika starts on her lunch, smiling at Yua's curious expression.

"
As far as Ichika-chan goes, I think I might join the student council."

”Thank you,” Ichika replies quietly, ignoring the sarcasm. Those around her usually found her calm and rather emotionless exterior to be either reassuring or off-putting depending on the situation. However, this didn’t mean Ichika was low in EQ and noticed emotional cues more then her peers thought she did. The difference was that Ichika chose to pretend and ignore the sarcasm and direct jokes as if she was oblivious to them to keep up with her more robotic persona.

But in saying all this, Ichika hardly minded. In fact, she understood that everyone to an extent wore a mask in society and she was sure even Yoshida himself did too, a prince .

As she finally managed to get through all the paperwork for the day, she furrowed her brows and looked over at her notes. Ichika stood up, holding the paperwork in her arms and walked over to Yoshida, ”One more thing, it seems like Watanabe – san hasn’t handed in her workbook for the day and I have a meeting with some club leaders, if you could just let her know to hand it in before the day ends I would appreciate it.”

Ichika made her way towards the door and looked back at Yoshida with a small smile as if to say goodbye.

Image

Image
Yua could barely hold in her excitement at the prospects of becoming friends with the prince. She nodded in agreement with the plan of going at them separately and watched as Rika’s eyes lit up, seemingly due an idea she may have come up with.

When Rika calls him nice, Yua doesn’t even realise that she’s lying and smiles wider, ”oh I know, he is such a ….a prince Rika-chan!” With a dramatic sigh and her hand on her forehead she adds ”Ichika – chan is so lucky!”

Yua turned her head ever so slightly at the thought of Rika joining the student council. It wasn’t a surprise to her since she knew she would be a perfect fit, and it would mean she would be closer to Ichika more often. As she took a sip of her orange juice Yua bit her lip nervously, not knowing how to approach Yoshida. Sure he was a lovely prince and was kind to everyone, but he was also the type who drew a line between himself and others so he was hard to approach in terms of wanting to be friends with him. ”I guess Ichika – chan is the same too, she thought.

XX Yoshida Nao

"One more thing," Tachibana says, and for a moment, Nao thinks she might be about to tell him off. "it seems like Watanabe – san hasn’t handed in her workbook for the day and I have a meeting with some club leaders, if you could just let her know to hand it in before the day ends I would appreciate it." And then she's gone, door sliding closed behind her.

Nao watches the door until he can no longer hear her footsteps in the hall. Then he frowns.

Watanabe-san? Who's that?

It takes far too long for Nao to realize Tachibana must have meant one of the two new girls, and he flips through the school roster until he finds the name- Watanabe Yua. The blonde.

Nao breathes a sigh, silently grateful that Watanabe isn't the brunette, because he really doesn't want to have to talk to her. She clearly doesn't like him and Nao can't say he really likes anyone, so they're likely in the same boat. Besides, the blonde doesn't seem very bright- an easy target.

Let's just hope I only have to talk to her once about schoolwork. It's already annoying with other students, much less some grade school-looking idiot who showed up out of nowhere.

Nao tucks most of his paperwork under his arm and heads back toward class, scanning the school roster once more and filtering out the names he recognizes until he finds the angry brunette.

Sato Rika.
How generic.

He slips the papers away in his desk once he gets to the classroom. Sato side-eyes him as he does, that sickly-sweet smile still on her face whenever he meets her gaze. He offers her a sickly-sweet smile in return and her eyes narrow. Yeah, she's definitely not going to be charmed easily.

What a pain. Nao thinks to himself, checking his watch to avoid her eyes. Only a few minutes left before classes start. He has to approach Watanabe now if he wants to avoid doing so later.

"
Watanabe-san?" He says, standing between her and Sato.

It takes Watanabe a good few seconds to realize he's talking to her, and she looks up at him with bewilderment. Nao gives his best charming smile and ignores Sato's piercing glare from his left.

"
Tachibana-san informed me you haven't handed in today's workbook assignment. She's a bit busy with paperwork, so she asked me to discuss it with you. Are you struggling at all?"

Nao prays she isn't; he really doesn't want the question to come off as an invitation for tutoring.

Yua finished the last bites of her lunch and quietly sighed in exasperation. She could imagine Rika and Ichika getting along and becoming friends in her head but the barrier between Nao and herself seemed too daunting for her to tackle. Being a cupid wasn’t all fun and games it seemed and Yua was getting frustrated with her lack of progress.

She looked over at Rika and smiled widely and those around her wouldn’t have noticed that she had forced herself too, after all, it was natural to see Yua smiling and happy. Yua knew that Rika would of course support and comfort her if she spoke out about her troubles but she didn’t want to burden her, since she was on the job as well and working hard too.

As Yua soon became lost in her thoughts she almost didn’t realise the sound of a familiar voice right beside her. Looking up in response to her name, her eyes go wide as the person she was thinking about was standing right in front of her.

She looks over at Rika, smiling at her as if to say this is my chance.

I can’t believe my troubles in academics is finally coming in handy, she thought to herself as this was the perfect excuse to get closer with Nao.

”Actually, I am struggling with it,” she rubs the back of her neck and releases an awkward laugh. Academics were never Yua’s forte and even with her memory wiped she could tell that hadn’t changed much. ”I could use some help…I mean that is if you are free!” She looked up at him with a warm smile, fiddling her fingers and hoping dearly that her ears weren’t going bright red.

XX Yoshida Nao

"Actually, I am struggling with it," Watanabe mumbles, clearly a little put out by the question.

Yeah, I suppose I could've guessed that.

"I could use some help…" Oh, don't you dare- "I mean that is if you are free!"

Nao stands there for far too long, saying nothing, silently wishing he'd never asked. Damn student council president manipulating him into situations like this. Not that he thought Tachibana did it on purpose; she was way too nice. But there's no way Nao can afford to refuse Watanabe.

Not unless he wants to look like a big jerk, and that's the one thing he absolutely has to avoid.

Sato, who for some reason hasn't moved during the entire conversation, perks up. "
That's a good idea, Yua-chan. You can have the vice president tutor you, since I've been too busy!"

It looks like it physically pains Sato to speak those words, but it snaps Nao back to reality, and he nods along with her awkward well-wishes. Then he shoots Watanabe a smile.

"
Actually, I do have time," Not a lie, for once- he'd be spending his time studying anyways, and tutoring someone else is basically a refresher on the material. "If you'd like to meet after school today, I'd be happy to work out a tutoring schedule. It's my job to help, after all."

Thankfully, the bell rings before the conversation can continue. Nao returns to his seat and Sato returns to hers, though she offers him a scathing glare as she passes him by. How lovely.

Let's just hope Watanabe isn't hopeless. I don't want to spend the rest of this semester trying to explain things to her. Tachibana-san, if this becomes any more of a pain, I'm blaming you.

It takes Yua extra effort to keep up with her smile as she realises she'll have an opportunity to get closer to Nao, but a funny feeling in her stomach starts to make her feel uneasy with the idea. Perhaps she was just nervous at the prospect of being with the school's prince or maybe it was the fear of failing in her task that was getting too much for her. Regardless, Yua couldn't show her troubles and the sound of Rika chiming made her realise she was in a team and couldn't drag Rika down with her.

"Afterschool is perfectly fine with me!" Yua exclaimed. Although she was worried she couldn't help but feel somewhat excited about hanging out with Nao during their free time. As Nao mentioned that it was his job, her smile faltered ever so slightly but only for a moment, as if she remembered that no, there weren't friends and he only viewed her as a classmate, for now anyway.

Before she could say anything more the bell rang and she watched as both Nao and Rika returned to their seats. From the corner of her eye, she noticed Ichika was already in her seat as she must have quietly slipped in without anyone noticing.

I hope I can do a good job she thought to herself.

XX Rika

Rika's more than a little salty over Nao approaching Yua almost immediately after they'd come to a decision on their plan of action. And not just because Yua's clearly getting into this faster.

She couldn't make herself jealous of Yua even if she wanted to be - which, of course, she doesn't - simply because she really, truly, genuinely wants Yua to succeed. She's seen what happens to the cupids who crush others to achieve their goals, and she has no desire to disappear like them.

Yoshida, though... yeah, she still can't stand him, and she's pretty sure he knows.

My pokerface might need a little work,

After the school day is over, Rika wishes Yua goodbye and watches her disappear with Yoshida. She shoots the boy a harsh glare when he looks back, and receives an icy smile for her troubles.

God, she can't stand him.

Shaking the thoughts of Yoshida and Yua in a room together for hours from her mind, Rika turns on her heel and heads for the roof. Or, well, the staircase that leads to the roof. The roof itself is off limits to students and the door is always locked. Not that a locked door can stop a cupid.

Once she's at the top and out of sight, she makes herself invisible, then goes on a hunt for Ichika.

She finds her in the student council room - shocker - and floats around the room, wondering what the best way to approach her could be. Being part of the student council should make it easy, she thinks, but there are only two meetings a week, and she can't really get close to Ichika that way.

What other choice do I have? She's rebuffed every other girl whose asked her out!

Rika takes a moment to smile at the double-meaning of "asked out" and sighs, flipping around in the air so she can peek over Ichika's shoulder at whatever paperwork is in front of her. Boring.

Or not, actually.

Class field trip? Rika skims over the paperwork, tries to ignore the smell of Ichika's shampoo. Oh hey, maybe we could do something with this. I should bring it up with Yua later.

Before she can think too much on the subject, Ichika is putting her things away and finally getting ready to head home. Rika hurries to find a place where she can reappear without being seen. She ends up in a bathroom stall a few doors down, and she makes it into the hall just as Ichika passes.

"
Tachibana-san!" She calls, bowing politely. "I noticed this morning that we live in the same direction, and I was wondering if you'd like to walk home together. If I'm not intruding."

Ichika was in all honestly drowning in paperwork and student council duties that by the time she had finished with her meeting and her afternoon classes, she just wanted to get home and take some time to rest. The meeting was simply about the class field trip which was still undecided and was giving her a headache. Hopefully Yoshida - san was able to get the class talking and finally make a decision to move forward.

As she walked down the hall in deep thought, she almost walked past Rika and would have continued to walk away if not for her name being called. With a small frown, she stopped in her tracks and looked up to see Rika approaching her. Ichika was confused over why she was being asked to walk home together since she had no prior relationship or even talked to the girl before. But a few seconds went by without an excuse popping up in her head so she figured it would be best to nod and accept the invitation.
"Ah, of course."

"I'm sorry, I must have been too deep in my thoughts that I didn't notice you."

Re: Cupid's Arrow

  • can fly/levitate

  • can change from a physical body to a "ghost" body at will; they can choose whether or not they interact with physical objects or not in "ghost" form

  • can alter/remove human memories if deemed necessary

  • do not require eating/drinking/sleeping, but can if they wish

  • can't die a second time; impervious to cold/heat, illness, injury, etc.

  • can always choose whether humans can see them or not; can also choose if only select humans can see them while others cannot

  • can apply their magic to their human charges if they wish, allowing them similar abilites; for example, if one of them wished for their human charge to be able to breathe underwater with them

there are no real rules/limits on the magic they can use or what they can use it for, but those who have gone against decent morals (those who have purposefully hurt a human) disappear and are never heard from again
