Introduction

The Plot

Its the year 2013 in an alternate world. In Japan there is a legend about a Phantom Thief, passed down for hundreds of years. The legend changes through the ages, but one thing is always the same. The Phantom is a woman with silver hair, she always uses small bladed weapons, and they steal for exactly ten years before disappearing for about fifteen. Then the new generation Phantom takes the place of their mother. Or at least, that's what the police has gathered. Some people believe that the Phantom is some sort of goddess who steals from people who don't worship her, she takes their worldly possessions so they have to pay attention to her. But again, just rumors.

This is the real story. Hundreds of years ago, a ninja princess carried the child of a samurai warlord, it was a forbidden relationship at the time. When the child was born, she had silver hair, something unexplanable at the time. The ninja princess and the samurai believed it was a curse from one of the goddesses, making sure that their child could never fit in. Her origins would be obvious to all. The samurai was put to death for his relationship. The ninja princess escaped with her daughter and taught her in the ways of the ninja. Each generation the same thing happened. The girl, trained in the ways of the ninja finds a lover of the opposite side, a so called forbidden relationship. Each time a child is born, it is a girl with silver hair. Always the man is put to death for his relationship, while the woman escapes with the child. As the ages went by, the name Phantom Thief was developed. For the silver haired girls are almost never seen, maybe one or two people actually see the girls before they disappear. This generation's Phantom actually had her picture taken. A first for the police.

The man in charge of hunting down the Phantom was the one who got the picture. For five years he's been chasing her. She's halfway through her ten year attack. One day, he's drawing closer to catching the Phantom. He sees her, he's chasing her, he shoots at her, he hits her, she goes down. Somebody moves closer to the fallen Phantom, thinking its some sort of acomplice, the man shoots him too. Because of adrenaline rush, he hits the man fatally. Only after he finds out that it was an undercover FBI agent. Now he either has to run, or die by the hands of the people he looks up to. Knowing her families' history with males on the opposite side, the Phantom makes a choices. She decides to help the man. Now they're on the run together, they dislike each other, but they have to trust each other in order to survive. Will the Phantom family curse survive another generation, or will things change? Will they even fall in love at all? Its up to us to decide.

(OOC: It'll start just after Masaru shot the FBI agent)

Two shots, one that took down the legendary Phantom Thief, Rumi, and the other killed a man that was running toward her. Rumi never got hit, she was too good for that, so the shot she took dropped her. It shouldn't have, it just hit her shoulder, nothing fatal. I guess that was one of the flaws of being such a good thief, no tolerance to pain. "Masaru what the hell are you doing?" A man in an police uniform yelled, "That was an undercover agent from the FBI!"

There was another police officer with the man who had yelled, this one had his gun on Rumi and was walking toward her with a pair of handcuffs. The one who had yelled had his gun on the officer that had been chasing Rumi for the past five years. In a sudden turn of events, Rumi and the officer were in the same boat. Rumi wasn't going to let herself get caught.

As soon as the officer got close enough, Rumi snapped out a kick from her place on the ground, it nailed the man in the kneecap with a loud crunch. The man howled in pain and dropped the gun and the handcuffs. Rumi shot to her feet, doing her best to ignore the pain. As she rose she grabbed the handcuffs. With fast fingers she put one end of the cuffs on the man's wrist, the other onto a nearby metal pipe. Then she turned to leave, but something made her stop.

The man who had been chasing her would be arrested at the least, killed at the most. Could she really let another person die like that? And one that may very well be her chance to continue her families' legacy? Slowly the Phantom picked up the gun near her feet. Then she turned, aimed at the man with the gun on her officer.

And fired.

It had all gone so wrong so fast. In a burst of adrenalin, a hand too eager to end his five year chase, Officer Masaru had downed an innocent, all the while just grazing his true target. At best, he would be booted from the force. At worst...

Every signal in his brain was lit up with the single impulse to run, escape, get out, but his body wouldn't comply. And then there was a gun on him and that impulse was replaced with another, more urgent. Don't die. Please, someone, don't let me die. A shot rang out, but not at him. He looked up and was shocked to find the Phantom Thief herself holding the gun, and more shocking still, the officer who could have ended him bleeding on the ground. The other officers weren't in much better shape.

Turning to the woman, he could only find one thing to say. "Why?"

Rumi dropped the gun and pressed a hand to her bleeding shoulder. As she addressed the officer she kept both her voice and face as blank as she could. Obviously she couldn't tell him the real reason, he'd think she was crazy. Hell, she thought she was crazy. She didn't even know why she was thinking about continuing the family curse. Maybe if she died without having a child it would end. And then no other silver haired girl would be born, or suffer like she had. "Like it or not, you're a criminal now too. Criminals have no one to ask for help but other criminals."

The Phantom turned around so her back was to the officer. "You can come with me, or not. I don't care."

Without looking to see if he was following, she started walking into the maze of alleyways that they were standing next to. It was a hangout for criminals of all kinds. Nobody stole from another criminal there, not even the thieves. If was like a safe haven for them. Rumi was one of the top dogs in The Maze, as it was called, they would leave the officer alone if he was with her.

Masaru gaped. After all this, did she just expect him to go along with her? Her nonchalance was like an irritating itch under his skin. He had devoted five years of his life to this chase, and what did he have to show for it? A potential criminal record and a shallow wound on his enemy's shoulder that he couldn't even feel proud of. He had to pay for what he did, he thought, just like anyone else. A small, sick part of himself actually hoped the Phantom Thief would threaten him, blackmail him, make him beg for her protection so he wouldn't be going willingly. But he was.

Shame, fear, and the remnants of furious excitement pooling in the pit of his stomach, no-longer-Officer Masaru followed the glint of pale light that was the Phantom Thief's silvery hair into the dark, shedding his badge onto the street. Maybe if he was lucky, they'd think she killed him. He'd rather be remembered as a cop who was gunned down in pursuit than a killer and a coward.

As Rumi weaved her way through The Maze, she didn't need to look behind herself to see that the officer, well ex-officer, was following her. She was taking the long, easy, way to her hideout, she doubted that he was capable of the parkour needed to get there quickly. She could have easily left him behind, to fend for himself, to die by the hands of the many criminals that watched them from broken windows, rooftops, and dark corners. But once again her families' curse came to mind. He could very well be the man she was to fall in love with. That would die after they had a child. After all, he had spent the last five years chasing her, he knew Rumi very well by now.

After walking for a while they made it to Rumi's hideout. It was in what was considered the good part of The Maze. It was where running water and electricity still had to be run because it was connected to the shopping district. The top dogs lived there, and an old bath house and bar could be used by any criminal wanting a bath or to watch the news. Rumi's hideout was an old house with three bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, living room, and cellar. One of the bedroom's was Rumi's, another was a storage for everything Rumi had stolen. The last was unused, Rumi could let the ex-officer use it for the time being.

Rumi entered her hideout, feeling along the wall for the light switch. She turned it on and headed to the kitchen, where her medical supplies were. She had lost a lot of blood on the way to the hideout and needed to treat her injury quickly. Especially if she was going to have to keep an eye on the ex-officer.

Masaru trod carefully through the thief's domain. Traveling through the nastier parts of the city made him nervous, as if its inhabitants could sniff out police, or ex-police. Just when he thought nothing else could surprise him, Masaru laid eyes on the Phantom Thieves home. He didn't really know what he expected, but somehow it never occurred to him that someone like the infamous thief, who was more like a living myth than an actual person in the eyes of most of the city, could live in a fairly ordinary, albeit obviously abandoned house.

Watching his hostess tend to her injury was somewhat surreal. When he first landed the shot, part of him had been proud of himself, while part of him was ashamed at not finishing the job. Now all of him was just embarrassed. She was a criminal, but she was also just a girl when their game of cat and mouse had first began and not much older looking now despite the passage of time, and in the heat of the chase, he had actually wanted to... Maybe it was a good thing he wasn't a cop anymore, he thought.

He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "So... need any help with that?" It wasn't as if he'd lost his bitterness towards the woman, but she had invited him into her home and offered him protection. Masaru was raised to respect a gesture that, and anyways he had no desire to be in debt to the thief.
