Crispin is a man who knows what he wants and exactly how to get it.
On the outside, he appears as a very sociable, approachable young man. He is attractive, wealthy, and well educated. When he speaks, people listen. He is more than a bit in demand...
However, beneath the charming almost sickeningly sweet demeanor, Crispin tells a very different story.
His is cold, calculating, and manipulative. He sees opportunity in everyone and everything. He uses people to benefit himself.
Background:
Crispin Rowling was born Charles Marquis Walters III in 1922, Bristol, England.
He was the single child of an affluent business man and his young wife. Soon after Crispin's birth, his mother Mariane began to suffer from "hysteria". It was widely believed that because of her husband's business ventures -- which kept him out of the house for months on end -- the stress of raising a child alone drove the young mother to her breaking point. Her symptoms were so severe she was often hospitalized. Because of this, Crispin was raised by his nanny, who treated him with as much love and guidance as if he were her own son. Mariane was absent for most of her son's upbringing, often shuffled from home to hospital whenever her "episodes" became too much for the household servants to handle.
Having no playmates his age to run around with, Crispin turned to books and learning to pass the time; he was proving to be a bright mind at a young age. He'd taught himself two languages by the time he turned thirteen. He often tried to share his newfound knowledge with his mother, but she was often bedridden and "too ill" to listen to her son's stories. He grew to resent both of his parents:
The absentee mother and unattached father.
He began stealing money from his parents. He would leave in the middle of the night to visit dingy pubs and backalley brothels, dabbling in every vice known to man not only to spite his parents, but to get a taste of freedom he'd never had in his childhood.
When Crispin was 18, he was drafted into the war.
This news came as both a curse and a blessing.
Crispin tried to evade the draft, but he was caught and shipped to France. He spent three months on the front lines before he took a bullet to the chest. The shot was fatal, but Crispin didn't die. The wound closed itself in a matter of minutes.
That's when he knew he was Special.
Believed to be dead, Crispin took the opportunity to ditch the war effort and run away to the remote countryside of France. He remained there until the war officially ended in 1945. He traveled back home to visit his parents one last time.
While no official reports were filed on the case, Mr. and Mrs. Walters were found dead and Crispin inherited the immense family fortune.
From there Crispin changed his name, deserted his family, and began to travel, using his newfound abilities to his advantage. He began to smoke (he didn't suffer any negative effects from it), drink excessively (he realized that he could not get drunk), and engage in risky behavior that could get him killed, just because he knew he couldn't die from it. He stopped visibly aging at age 25. He only settled down when the traveling lifestyle was no longer exciting; sometimes he would settle for months, sometimes for years.
But Crispin does get bored easily...
