Darkness Falls

Darkness Falls

0 INK

The year 2015 where Darkness has fallen over the planet and selected people live in underground bunkers.

2,944 readers have visited Darkness Falls since CriminalMinds created it.

Introduction

For hundreds of years Humans abused the planet, using all its materials and not thinking the effects on the environment - well, until it was too late. In 2010 scientists started to collect evidence that started to confirm the effects of Global Warming was doing damage to Earth and now it couldn't be undone. By 2012 (coinciding with Mayan prophecies), they believed that Earth would take control to get it's natural Equilibrium and take out most of the living species on Earth - including them. And so for the next two years they worked on a plan to save as many as possible and they did this by building underground bunkers that carried 500 people. There are rules though to entry:

How One Gains Access To Bunkers

First off:

  • One male and one female are chosen that are the best in their chosen profession. They are the best of the best in that area.
  • Top professions are: [Note: a number of fields within each category like military, scientists and doctors... More can be added, just PM me first or ask in the OOC]
    • Military
    • Scientists
    • Mathematicians
    • Teachers
    • Doctors
    • Nurses
    • Linguists
    • Artists
    • Literary
    • Vets
  • No one sick on the day off entry can enter.
  • People that enter can only have one child born inside.
  • No one with a criminal record can enter.
  • No one over the age of 45 can enter.
  • People that gain access through their professions can bring their immediate family along as long as they follow the rules for entry.
  • Any spaces left in the bunkers are given off as a lottery to everyone else through a national database. They can only gain access once all the checks have been approved.

Rules

  • Please, please, please use proper typing and grammar. I know most of us slip up, which is fine, but when people have to translate to understand, it gets annoying. Also, can people possibly separate paragraphs a little to make posts easier to read.
  • No god-modding. I am the GM and what I say goes. This includes no Mary-Sues or Gary-Stu characters. No one is perfect so don't make your character perfect please.
  • OOC talk stays in the OOC. Simple as. Please read and use the OOC as well. Do not use the OOC in the IC thread.
  • Be realistic in what you post.
  • No one liners. I know people post different lengths so I'm asking a paragraph at least, two if possible.
  • Read other peoples posts to know what's going on. I know this seems obvious, but it's surprising how many people post without reading other people's posts.
  • If you are going away/dropping out, please let us no either by PM (to me) or on this thread.
  • Try to post at least once a day so the thread doesn't get too slow and everyone keeps up.
  • Romance and violence is allowed, but must be kept PG-13.

So, that's it. Have fun and apply using the new Roleplay tab by submitting the characters there. Just adjust the character sheet to fit the layout there. As long as it's all there I don't mind. :) I'll have my sheet up soon. I'll add places once I've discussed with accepted people what places to have in the bunker. So, again have fun!

"But What about me? Us? I can't cope looking after them all." Cayden whispered.

"You can Cay. I know you can." Her father stated.

"I'm only 16 though. The twins need a mother and a father. So does Devon." The young girl was almost in tears. Her mother had been denied access to the bunkers because of her advanced and untreatable Cancer and her father had just broke the news that he was going to stay with her mother. That meant that Cayden would be looking after the twins 3 year old Mandy and Kale and then the baby, 5 week old Devon. Cayden herself was only 16 years old and a child herself. She didn't think that she could suddenly take on the responsibility of three children.

"You can do it. I know you can Cayden. Me and your mother believe in you." Her father spoke.

"I don't know if I can leave you here to die though." She cried.

"You can, Cayden. I know you can because your brothers and sister need you. They need you to show them the way and remember us."

Cayden finally nodded accepting that her father and mother would die within the weeks to come while the siblings would be safe in an underground bunker. Cayden was going to take the step from sister to mother with her three siblings.

---

November 23rd 2012 - Entry into bunkers

Cayden's father stood at the house watching as his daughter was loaded onto a bus with her siblings. For the last five weeks he'd been preparing his daughter to look after them. Their mother was in bed, too sick to make it outside and give one last goodbye to her children. Cayden and the twins were crying, not wanting to leave their parents. The younger kids had no idea what was going on and only reacted to everything because of Cayden. They decided it was best not to tell the twins yet what was going to happen. They were too young. It wasn't even known if these underground bunkers would survive the disaster that had been predicted.

It wasn't a terribly long journey to the bunkers but the crowds of people that were outside the gates protesting was huge. There were scores of people; from adults to children, men and women a like all begging for a space inside the bunker; a space that wouldn't be given to them. Cayden watched as they passed through the gates, numbers of military personnel holding back the crowds. There was screaming and crying, begging and pleading and for the first time Cayden was glad that she'd been lucky with the lottery. If her family hadn't she wondered if her mother and father would have dragged them hear to beg.

They unloaded the bus not long later just outside the bunker. There were several desks with long lines coming from them, obviously taking registers of the people that were entering, making sure they were on the list, had the correct papers etc etc. Cayden held onto Devon while making sure the twins were nearby. She then took their luggage, struggling some with several bags and only two hands and managed to join the queue. It was a while before they were at the front of the queue, but once they were she gave over their passports, papers and everything that showed they'd been granted access for the bunkers. Cayden passed with her siblings with little trouble and had someone show them into the bunker.

As explained the place consisted of five main areas, the living quarters were everyone had one small room per family, a public bathroom and toilet for each gender, and a kitchen/cafeteria; the hospital just in case anyone fell ill or needed to visit during their stay; the greenhouse for all the plants that they'd collected to survive and provide oxygen for the bunkers; the zoo where all the species of animals they were trying to save stayed; and the work area where the military and everyone of the top professions and workers that looked after the bunkers went to work and talk, make sure everything was running smoothly.

Finally they got to their room once the tour was shown and was left along. The room was small. She'd managed to get a room with a cot in and two single double beds and that was it. There was a small cupboard in the corner but it was barely enough to fit anything in. Cayden knew that the baby stuff would fit in there perfectly though. She put Devon down in the cot and made sure the twins were still with her.

"Why isn't mommy and daddy here? I see other mommies and daddies." Mandy told her.

"Mommy and daddy are sick so can't come on vacation with us." She told them, forcing a smile from her lips though it was one full of sadness and sympathy at the fact that the twins had no idea what was going on.

"Daddy didn't look sick." Kale answered.

"He needs to look after mommy though." Cayden told them as she unpacked a few of their toys in hope to distract them. She kept the door open so she could see the others that were coming in. In the living area it was split into numerous hallways and passages with around 6 rooms coming off of each hallway. There were two main bathrooms located within the middle sections of the halls and then right at the end of the passages was access to the kitchen. It was pretty simple. Everyone inside was preparing for a new life - one which they could only hope would carry the lucky few to survival.

“Look the bus is right there. Gather your things and let’s get this over with.” David rushed, grabbing his wife’s wrist with his left and tugging her toward the line while his suitcase filled with his clothes swung in his other.

“They aren’t going to leave without us dear,” Julia chuckled with evanescence, “I swear, sometimes you’re a child.” She added.

----

“I’m sorry sir, but she cannot enter the bunker. Only immediate family may enter.” A stern guard stated, holding his rifle that crossed across his chest.

“What the hell do you mean she can’t come in? The contra—“David was cut off.

“The contract stated that only family members may join, married or through blood line. Please Mr. Marshall, enter the bus now.” The guard ordered, eying his other colleagues as a sign that trouble was to be had.

“This is bullshit! I read that contract and it said anyone of my choice god damnit!” David’s voice rang throughout the panicked crowd, Julia’s arms wrapped around David’s left arm.

“I’m not entering the bunker without her, so tell your higher ups that.” David exclaimed placing his right hand on top of Julia’s.

“I’m sorry to hear that Mr. Marshall, you signed a contract and you must be obliged to follow it.” The guard whistled for his fellow guards, one pulled Julia away making her lose the grip on the man she loved, two more restraining David as he attempted to fall back to his wife.

“You son of a bitch, let me go! Julia!” David cried out, the panicked crowd began to push and shove their way to the front in widespread chaos.

“Get him in the bus, now! Close off everyone else, get another bus down here!” The guard attempted to shout above the roused crowd.

Julia’s face was but a star in a galaxy now as a school of fish swam their way to the shore.

----

David woke up on the ground in what he assumed to be an iron prison suited with a bed, desktop, a lamp and other accessories needed. He was in the bunker now, the cold sensation that filled the room told him he was, the sensation that he would grow to know so well, solitude. Faint fragments were all that he could remember how he got to the bunker and how they made him was a haze. He remembered a guard pistol whipping him in the head, after that he heard voices as he floated across a plane of gray.

“Don’t let—out of room, you – stand? He’s sick and needs rest.”

Who was he talking to? Who was he? Who’s sick? Question and question piled up. Placing his palms flat on the ground, he rose himself from the ground. The room spun around, his head hurt. As he placed his right hand on the spot where the guard pistol whipped him, he felt a stinging sensation. Blood dampened his fingers. David crawled to the bed, regaining his vision back. Wanting to know what happened to Julia. Wanting to know where he was. Wanting to know how to get out.
“God damnit! God damnit, god damnit , god damnit!” He shouted at the tops of his lungs. He knew what happened to Julia, she was suffering from isolation, suffering from the shadows that plague the world. He knew where he was, he was in the Earth’s underground utopia. He knew how to get out, he just didn’t want to in fear of living life without her.

“God damnit!” he continued chanting, screaming until it felt like his lungs would bleed from the strain. With rage he stood up, it was adrenaline that kept him alive, he took the desktop lamp and threw it across the room and watched it shatter on the wall like the dreams he wish would come true. He took the desk top and flipped it over like his clouded judgments of their promises. He stormed to the iron door that held him captive against his free will and punched the surface as hard as he could. David continued his maddening spree until he could no longer feel the pain in his knuckles. No longer feel the pain of lost love. No longer feel the pain of distrust. Praying that with some miraculous divine intervention the iron door would topple over and make him realize that this was all a dream.

This was his new home now, The Bunker, the utopia of Earth.

The sun was unusually bright as Lora walked home from school, she'd had an exceptionally good day and had taken her time getting home. Walking up the steps of the small house, Lora opened that door and said, "Aunt Margaret I'm ho-" She broke off as she caught sight of her Dad sitting on the couch. Confused, she put on her "frowny smile," a smile that was crooked while her eyes frowned, she said, "What're you doing here Dad? The school year ends in June, remember?" Aunt Margaret sat opposite of her brother in an arm chair, her arms crossed and an angry expression engraved on her face. Dr. Vider stood up and said with a smile, "I'm going to be living in New York for a while so you're going to move in with me, okay Sea Star? Why don't you go pack your things."
"Um, okay but I'm not a sea star." Lora said hesitating for a moment before she walked to her room. She could hear her father's deep chuckle behind her. As she closed the door behind her, she started to pull out the suitcase from her closet and started to packing. It wasn't long before the shouting started, that was something you had to get used to with Aunt Margaret. She did a lot of that unintentionally when she was angry.

"You can't take her now! She's just starting to have a normal life." She heard her aunt shout, and Lora started to pack quicker so that she could hear what was going on. She could hear her father's voice but it was muffled by the door, so once she was done packing she sat on her bed and listened. She had packed that suitcase so many times, that she always packed quickly. "You keep dragging her off to strange and dangerous places, someday something bad's going to happen to her. Do you want her to end up like Amy?" Her Aunt shouted, Amy had been her mother's name, that was the line and excuse she used every time Lora's father came to take her for the summer.
"Lora needs her Father." She could hear her father shout, he'd finally lost his temper as well.
"Lora needs a mother too, and who took that away from her?" Aunt Margaret shouted, Lora knew it was a knife threw the heart, that line. There was a long silence and then, Lora heard footsteps down the short hall. "Lora are you ready? We're leaving now." Her father said with a knock.
"Yeah I'm coming." Lora said jumping off her bed and grabbing her suitcase. Opening the door, she followed her father out of the house. The moment the front door closed, Lora began to hear the sounds of her Aunt tearing the house apart.

That was one of the problems with Asperger's, once you hit boiling point you lose it and then slowly come back down. There was no restraint with that, Lora knew that her dad knew better then to rile her up like that. Lora put her stuff in the back and climbed into the front seat. The first hour of the car ride was absolutely silent, all during that time, her father's brow was furrowed and his knuckles white on the wheel. When Lora noticed that his knuckles where no longer white, Lora cleared her throat and asked, "So, what sort of job did you get?"

"I didn't get a new job, we're going to live in a bunker for a while." Her father said as he started to explain the situation. Lora's teenage attention span didn't grasp everything but she got the gist of it all. As she listened, her own brow furrowed and she started to frown. As his explanation ended, there was a long moment of silence before Lora burst out. "You mean to tell me that you left Aunt Margaret back there to die?! She's your sister, how can you be so cold?" Lora snapped.
"She can't come where we're going, they won't let her in because she's Autistic. Making her angry like that was the only way to get her to let go of you." Her father said, the whole time, he refused to look at Lora. Slumping back her seat, Lora folded her arms and stared out the window. Anger and frustration consumed her and eventually she fell asleep.

----------------

They had stopped several times during the trip and it took them about a week to reach New York. Lora was still sulking and staring out the window when they made it to the bus. Dr. Vider parked the car and started to pull his bags from the trunk, while Lora still sat in the car. A rap on the window startled her from her daze and her father opened the door. "Come on, time to go Sea Star." He said with an apologetic smile, he was holding her suitcase too. Getting out of the car with an exasperated sigh, Lora grabbed her bag and said, "I'm still not a sea star." Lora had always thought that he was weird for calling her that. Getting on the bus, Lora found an empty seat and sat down while her father sat down next to her.

Lora tried hard to tune everything out during the ride, it was fairly quiet, but when they made it to the bunker, she became aware of the rage outside. As the bus jerked to a stop she got off and stared at the crowd for a moment. They would all be gone soon and the sad part was they knew it. "Come on Lora, time to go." Her father said urging her on, and she slowly walked away towards the bunker. They patiently stood in line and Lora continued to zone out as they made their way up the line. Her father handed over the paper work and pretty soon they were clear to go in. Her father led them around and eventually to their room. Where Lora set her bag down on her bed and then said, before leaving the room to wander and explore. "I'm going to go take a look around." Then she stuck her hands deep in her jean pockets and started walking.

Cayden watched as a man was dragged though to the room next doors to her and frowned slightly as she went to close her door. She didn't like the look of it and didn't want the twins to see it either. They didn't need to be exposed to that especially when they were upset and already question their parents. Before she got to the door to close it though someone was at her door.

"Don't let him out of the room. You understand? He's sick and needs rest." He told her.

"If he's sick and here why couldn't our mommy and daddy come?" The little boy questioned.

"Not now, Kale. I'll answer later." Cayden told him.

The guy soon left and another man and girl entered, moving into another room. Cayden hated not knowing anyone. She was a stranger and shy so meeting new people and talking didn't come natural to her. It didn't really matter though, she figured. She had three kids to look after and that was more important. Her thoughts were soon interrupted though by the man next door. He appeared to be awake and not very happy. She frowned as Mandy became scared at all the shouting and Kale just frowned.

"Come on, let's play a game, okay?" She told the twins.

Not long later Devon was crying at the noises and the shouting, disturbed from his sleep. Cayden sighed and quickly picked him up and tried to comfort him as she left the twins to play. She didn't know which was worse, Devon's high pitched scream or the man next door and his shouting. She sighed knowing that she was going to have to get on with this life and that it was going to be the same every day for most of her life to come, if she survived.

Getting anywhere in California was a hassle. Traveling to one of the world's few safe havens on the eve of nearly certain crisis was simply that much harder. Vincent was packed when his transportation arrived, managing to do it himself. He'd laid off his hired help a week beforehand, giving them each a hefty amount of cash, it was the end of the world as he knew it and they deserved some reward for their service. With a grim smile and a shake of his head, Vinnie walked out the front door of his residence, trying to hide the fact that he'd just snorted what was likely his last line of blow. The house was nothing special, nowhere near as extravagant as most stars would prefer, but Vincent didn't see a point in wasting money on a mansion when it was hardly necessary. No, his funds went to far more important causes, charities and debauchery.

The ride was uneventful for the most part, the bus plowing towards the bunkers that a few handfuls of people would be calling home. Vincent was still skeptical about the end, subconsciously praying that the whole thing was being overblown. In fact, if it wasn't for the rail he'd mainlined less than an hour beforehand, he'd likely have been a mess on the trip. Luckily, Vincent had experience with crowds, and he disassociated himself from the screaming, begging masses by pretending he was simply at a movie premier. The tactic worked surprisingly well, although he found himself involuntarily clenching his fists and wishing his palms would stop sweating so profusely.

"Can we get this over with? I'm fucking exhausted." Vinnie muttered to the official in charge of the entrance, getting off the bus had exacerbated his already heightened anxiety. The excuse was a poor one, but the man pushed him through anyways after checking his documents and confirming who he was. There was some nonsense about a tour, but he'd get his bearings later. First things first, Vincent wanted to get his baggage in his room and his body on the bed. He doubted he'd fall asleep, but he needed to get away from the crowds and noise and think about he'd handle his eventual withdrawal. He prayed to whichever god existed on that day that the medical staff would have Valium for when the shit hit the fan and he started shaking like his soul was too big for his body.

Silence soon overtook David’s iron prison, blood stained on the door that he tried so desperately to break down with his brawn alone. He began to pant heavily, the adrenaline that granted him his surge of energy soon dispersed. David gazed down at his hands, his knuckles torn open. There was no trace of skin visible as blood continued to gush out of his wound and a couple of times David even swore that his bones were visible.

“Agh!” David shouted in agony. It felt like his hands were broken. No, he thought, they are broken. The pain was unbearable, he never broken a bone before and now he felt like a child who experienced a life changing hurdle. His face grew paler as he was never a fan of this bodily fluid. Dropping to his knees in pain he attempted to drag his equally bloodied left hand to nurse his right hand, but even that was a leap. Another shout of pain dispersed from his mouth. David’s forehead connected with the iron-plated surface in hopes to stop this nauseating pain.

“Hello? Is anyone there…” David called out, hoping that his echo would carry out of the room through some sort of ventilation system. Before he could continue, he heard the sound of an infant crying. His eyes began to crystallize. Was this fate toying with him? Or was this a cruel joke played by God? Perhaps even a message from Hell. The infant’s fearful cries was just about to break David, break the little sanity he had bottled up inside. Tears slide down the sides of his cheek like water rushing down solid glass after a rainy day.

“Please, if someone is out there,” He broke off, the pain getting the best of him, “I think my hands are broken. I need help or bandages to stop the bleeding.” David sat and waited, hoping that with some given luck that someone would hear his pleas.

Cayden tried desperately to quiet Devon, but he was having none of it. He didn't want changing or feeding or anything. The only thing that kept him crying was the noise next door. Finally though it came to an end and there was just silence there. It was at that point that Devon was starting to settle and both Cayden and the twins were grateful. The young girl kept rocking the baby until she heard a voice.

“Please, if someone is out there, I think my hands are broken. I need help or bandages to stop the bleeding.” She heard.

Cayden bit her lip and looked at the twins before figuring that she had to try and help the man next door. She just had to. She couldn't leave him there in pain. It could have been a joke though, to get himself out. After all, the men said not to let him out - that he was sick. She looked at the twins playing happily again. His voice didn't sound like it was joking. The pain seemed to be evident in it.

"Guys, continue playing here and don't come out. I'll shut the door, just don't come out until you hear me say so." She told them.

She took Devon with her for two reasons. One because she didn't want to put him down and have him start crying again and two because she figured if the man knew she had a child he might not hurt her. She closed her door and moved to the kitchen, finding a first aid kit and then going to the next door, seeing the key in the lock still. Finally she spoke out.

"If I unlock the door you won't hurt us, right? I have a baby with me." It was a stupid thing to say. He could easily lie but she asked anyway.

Once she got an answer, Cayden slowly moved her hand to the key and turned it, opening the door.

David couldn’t help but scoff at the girl outside his door. This really was a cruel joke. He arched his foot forward while grunting in pain as he attempted to crawl and position his body to the side of the door. He casually rested his back against the cold surface near the door. David began to sprawl out his legs while his knuckles’ lumped to his sides.

“Yeah, I promise.” David called out nauseously. As the door opened he saw a teenage girl cradling what seemed to be her younger brother. Held in her hand was a first aid kit covered in dust with the stickers peeling off due to old age.

He was a bit embarressed about the carnage he caused in his room. A desk tipped over to its side with one of the four legs broken off, a shattered lamp that expanded across the room and his mattress that was ripped off from his bed frame. He had only hoped that she would not see the mess of blood about the room.

“Just hand me the alcohol and the bandages,” David stopped, “The little orange bottle and the roll white tape.” He corrected himself. He was never good with kids. In fact this was one of the many rare occasions where he even associated with one. He lifted in right hand to her waist level where she could easily hand him the medical equipment that he asked for, the blood from his knuckles slowly began to form droplets. Scavenging with his left hand, he dove inside his front pocket and pulled out a carton of cigarettes and a lighter.

“Care for one?” David asked absently-mindedly, holding the cigarette carton to her. It was only moments until he realized what he just asked. “Never mind, kid’s your age shouldn’t be smoking these things anyways,” pulling the carton back to his chest and fishing out a cigarette with his mouth. Successfully sliding one out of the package, he allowed the cigarette to rest casually in between his lips.

“Could you also be a doll and light me up, you know how to use a lighte-“ he paused again snickering to himself as he lightly tapped his forehead with his left hand. “You shouldn’t be playing with fire either, especially when you’re nursing your sibling there.” David lectured. He soon threw the half-empty carton of cigarettes to his side.

Vinnie had found his room easily enough, yet the peace and quiet he'd hoped to find with it were woefully invisible. The second he'd entered the living quarters he heard a man screaming about a broken hand, and the unmistakable wail of an infant. It was almost more than he could handle, given the situation. Deciding it would be impossible to simply ignore the intrusive sounds, Vincent took a few minutes to lean against the nearest wall and rub his temples only moving forward once it had quieted down.

His initial plan of taking a nap was out of the question, Vinnie had enough trouble sleeping in the confines of his own home and he didn't feel like laying in his bed for hours. So, taking the time to drop his excess baggage off in his room, the man decided he'd take an independent tour of the living quarters. Subconsciously he wandered towards the source of the previous noise, keeping his eyes averted to the ground. Hallways never seemed to agree with him. It only took Vincent a minute or so to come across what appeared to be a young woman with a child and a clearly distressed male sharing a room. He stopped in the doorway, waiting a few seconds before announcing his presence.

"So, are the walls here too thin, or is it just me?" Vincent spoke, as charmingly as possible, barely managing to mask the tremor in his voice. He'd only come down a little while ago, yet he already felt like shit, it was probably situational. He'd always had trouble maintaining in particularly stressful situations, and this trumped anything he'd experienced in Hollywood. As conceited as it sounded, he was hoping the pair would recognize him, maybe it would justify his presence in the bunker although he still couldn't.

Cayden watched the man inside, wondering if she'd done the right thing by opening the door when they'd told her not to. Once she saw that his hands were bleeding and he wasn't going to run so she wasn't going to get in trouble. She slowly entered the room and knelt down next to him as she messed with the first aid kit, trying to get everything out with one hand while keeping Devon balanced with the other. It was harder than it seemed but she finally managed to do it and got the alcohol and the tape for him, slowly placing it into his hands.

The young girl had no idea what to say when he offered her a cigarette and was glad when he realised she was still a child and had a baby. Cayden was a girl that followed things when caving into pressure. She didn't like saying no to people and felt pushed to do things, even when they were a bad habit. Now though, she had three kids to think about. Cayden was about to help him light up a cigarette but again he stopped her as he thought she was too young to play with fire.

"I may be young, but I'm not that young." She stated. "I'm 16. I can light a cigarette if you want but I'd much rather wait until I've settled Devon in the other room so he doesn't have to inhale the smoke." She continued. "If you need help with your hands I can Devon on the bed to help you. I'm Cayden, by the way."

Her attention was drawn from the injured man to the one that was now standing in the doorway. "I'm sorry if Devon's crying disturbed you." She frowned slightly. He looked familiar but at that point Cayden couldn't quite place where she'd seen him. She frowned more when she saw the twins behind him. "I told you to to stay in your room." She told them.

"But we wanted to see. Devon gets to see." Kale told her.

Cayden frowned and looked at both men as she got the twins to come close to her. She didn't know the people here and hesitated them been so close to the strangers so made sure they were close to her. She sat them on the floor and made sure they were holding Devon okay before moving back to the first man. "So, I can help you now, if you want some."

Dr. Vider watched as his daughter left to explore the compound, had he really done that much damage? How little he had done to cause so much damage, but then again, he had done more then enough. Although he loved his wife and daughter to death, work still seemed to take precedence. All he ever did was work, he worked while he was with his daughter, he continued to work after his wife died and even at the end of the world, he was working all the same. As Dr. Vider unpacked his things, he pulled out the only two pictures that matter to him in the world. One was a picture of him, his wife, and Lora when she was a toddler. They were all smiling enthusiastically and little Lora and her arms stretched high towards the sky. The second picture was Lora's high school picture, she was smiling pleasantly, but that was all. There was no enthusiam, no happiness, just a pleasant smile.

Dr. Vider wondered how much of her life had he really missed, what big events had taken place in her life. Of course he missed something, but had his absence really changed that little girl he knew before so much? Maybe it was just that she was growing up, she couldn't be his little girl forever. Dr. Vider couldn't call himself a great father, but at least he was a father, perhaps in this solitary place, he could become a good father again. With a sigh, Dr. Vider sat down at his small desk with his briefcase, and started to look over his paper work. Mostly records and graphs about the contaminants in the water, what animals had an increase in certain chemicals and other such information. In a while he would turn to his notes and studies of some of his favorite animals. He loved mammals, they were the ones that interested him the most, whales especially.

David kept the cigarette resting between his parted lips. He never attended to smoke around an infant or a teenage girl.

“I’ll be alright, you should head out of here before some-,“ he paused. David heard the echoing footsteps of someone approaching. This was troublesome. If the girl had been spotted helping him, who knew what consequences were to be had. Arching his head forward, David saw a familiar face, he was sure he never met this person. However the face was a one he’d seen often.

"So, are the walls here too thin, or is it just me?" the man spoke. David had it now; the man was Vincent Esposito a well known actor. He would always capture the heart his girlfriend when she saw him on screen. Although to avoid complications and difficult memories, David revised his statement.

“You two should head out of here before the guards see you assisting me.” David finished, painfully lifting his broken hand. He carefully dropped his cigarette on his lap and bit a piece of bandage to unravel the cloth. David then continued to unravel the cloth until he could get a reasonable amount to wrap one of his hands. Painfully and sluggishly, he attempted to open the bottle that contained the alcohol so he could clean his wounds before applying the bandage.

Megan turned the key in the lock to the door, taking the key out once she heard the click. Her father, brother, and sister in law had stopped by a week ago with a moving van and helped her clean up the apartment. Then her brother’s wife had driven her car – with all of Megan’s personal things in it – back to her parent’s house. Her father and James had followed with the furniture in the moving van. Megan had always been a minimalist and she didn’t like clutter so the one trip cleared out her entire apartment. Well, almost all of it. She looked down at the two plain brown suitcases on the floor beside her. One held clothes for both work and relaxation, plus her personals. The other held various papers, books, and articles she had collected over the years. Some of the books were blank, waiting for her to write her observations in. The second suitcase had taken longer to pack than the first, as she had to sort through her book cases, and then do it again when she realized her first go and turned up to many items. While her contract and the 200-page booklet that came with it had ‘suggested’ one suitcase per person due to the lack of space, she would be damned if she left her most important science and animal books behind. How could they expect her to do her job if she didn’t have references? She had even bought a few ‘how to teach’ books on chance that she would have to teach the next generation what she knew.

She pulled a white envelope, creased and wrinkled, from her coat pocket and dropped the key in it before she seal it. It was early in the morning – the sun hadn’t even risen yet – so she didn’t bother knocking on the landlord’s door but instead slipped he envelope under his doormat. Without another look back she started the half mile walk to where the bus would be picking her up.

~~~~~
It took a day and a half to get to New York and the bunkers. As the crowd thickened, forcing the bus to slow, Megan turned her face from the window and closed her eyes. The roar of the roar of the crowd dulled to background noise. She wasn’t particularly concerned with the majority of the populace left to suffer outside the bunkers, but it hurt her heart to see those that didn’t care if they themselves got in and only wanted their children to be safe. When the bus, after what seemed like several more hours, finally stopped Megan opened her eyes and looked out the window. They were a few hundred yards from the police barricade that kept the rest of the civilians away. Megan and the others on the bus shuffled out and stretched, worn from doing nothing but sitting and the excitement they knew would come. The bus drivers unlocked the compartment that held their luggage and one by one they pulled their baggage out and filed to the end of the short line. As she got closer Megan pulled out her papers to show the men in charge. When it came to her turn she smiled pleasantly and waited while they checked everything over, stamped various pages, and filled in signatures with red ink. One of the men eyed her two suitcases dubiously but refrained from comment when he met her eyes.
When it was done a woman handed her a map that showed the layout of the bunker and pointed the way to Megan’s rooms. What Megan really wanted to do was head straight to the zoo and see if they had gotten everything right. She knew they had – they wouldn’t put this much effort into something to just screw up with the animals – but it would put her mind at ease. Instead she turned in the direction the woman pointed her in, labeled ‘Living Quarters’. The rooms were numbered and had little plaques that people could write their name on. She stopped in front of her room – key in the lock – and opened the door. She paused a moment to look at her name plaque that read ‘Dr. Quill’ and frowned. While she was technically a doctor, she had never liked anyone calling her one – it made her sound pompous to her own ears.
A visual sweep around the room made her doubt the wisdom of bringing a suitcase full of books. She learned her suitcases against the wall and went to the bed. It was a single, placed in the middle of the room. She set her shoulder against it, shoving it to the side of the wall before voices reached her.
“So, are the walls to thin here, or is it just me?”
She looked up and moved to peek out of her room. Several doors down a male stood in a doorway, looking in. A young, higher pitched voice answered in something Megan couldn’t catch, and was joined in by several younger voices – probably children. Megan stepped out, closed the door behind her, and put the key in her pocket. As she walked closer, she could just hear another male voice telling them to leave before they got caught.
Megan had never been much of a people person, but now that she was alone – no family or friends to fall back on if she got lonely – she pushed herself to step next to the male in the doorway and look in. The sight made her purse her lips. A haggard looking male was trying to bandage his damaged hands by himself. A teenage girl with three young ones was watching while the male in the doorway simply watched.
She pushed past the man in the doorway and knelt down in front of the other. She was aware that she might be over stepping her bounds and probably looked rude inviting herself in without an introduction. She pushed those thoughts to the side and gingerly picked up his hand to examine it. “What happened?”
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
Well yes but... this died a year and a half ago.
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
What do you mean? Aren't you supposed to submit an application?
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
...why in the world would you do that?
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
I submitted an application but I'm still not sure if I was accepted. The character's name is Tai Kurio.
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
It's fine :) No problem at all silverclawedmouse
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
I posted. Sorry it took so long all.
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
Need more posts >:l
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
Oh and I forgot to add a couple of things; if you want your own place, say your bedroom made into a place in the tab let me know.
And also in my first post I've started it 3 years before 2015, in the year 2012 when people are just moving into the bunkers. I'll do a time skip to 2015 in a few posts but for now we'll just start at 2012 and moving in, introductions etc :)
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
And the IC is up. Characters can still apply. Waiting for a couple more applications from people that said they'd join but other than that people can join. Will be adding to places today as well :)
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
Just as a note for me so it appears in the OOC notes. For places I was thinking of having 5 different main areas.
Hospital
Living area
Work area
Zoo area
Greenhouse
I might add more specific places to like 'this characters home' and stuff like that :)
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
Okay thanks Criminal, I think I have an idea of what I'm going to do. Expect to see my character some time today.
*Edit* Okay I don't know about today, but today or tomorrow.
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
Koritai: You don't need to really be a specialist in that area. Say you decided to go with being a linguist - I wouldn't expect any of your posts to be in German. When interacting with characters you might want to show off and even then just simple things. After all, I was born in Germany and lived there for 13 years and don't know any German. xD Point is, whatever your specialist subject is you don't have to really be a specialist in it in real life and know everything about it. And if you wanted to use a translator every now and then or know a bit about Germany, it's easy to just research what you need ^^.
/Grim/: That is a very good question and I'm glad you asked as it's given me a chance to think about where I want my roleplay to go. I was thinking of having everyone start in the bunkers first stating about what first entry was like and then going on a time skip in the future after two or three years before coming out of the bunkers. I was thinking then to have 'survivors' possibly on Earth still that appear through the story which would cause big conflict as they weren't chosen to be saved. That was a general idea but I'm also looking for any ideas others may have that they want to contribute to the story.
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
I would love to join but I'm having some issues trying to think of a profession. I was thinking maybe a linguist, because I do know enough German to get by, but even then, I'd probably use a translator a lot. But then I thought about, maybe some sort of animal specialist. Like, maybe, and Animal Behaviorist, or a Zoologist or something. Point is I don't know what to go for, would it be okay to be a Lottery winner?
Re: [OOC] Darkness Falls
I have a question. You may say I am new to this place. I have had experience with PBFs before, but what I got used to before coming here- to Roleplay Gateway was some sort of introductory post, that gave you idea of upcoming story elements or nemesis. I see recruitments structured like yours, and I am hesitant to invest my time in such games. That is because I don't know if Game Master will provide any kind of incentive to come here every day and be active. What will drive players in your session forward? Will it be a struggle with enemy? An intriguing plot? Or is it player-player interaction?
I'd really wish to know, before I invest my time in this game.
