Description

Image
Name: Gavin Etherwick

Gender: Male
Age: 16 (in appearance)
Race: Doll
Role: Doll 4 (Puppet Servant)

Orientation: Straight
Status: Single

Appearance: Gavin stands at approximately 5ā€™9ā€ with a weight of near 140lb - an unusual weight for a human of his build, but his body is made of lighter but durable porcelain and low-density gears. He has a pale complexion that contrasts with his dark hair. Due to an accident while serving the Puppet King, he ended up with a nasty crack across the surface of his face, which often earns him unappreciated attention. Another notable feature is the fact that his eyes differ in color ā€“ his left being blue, and the right being red. The blue eye is impaired, and sometimes has difficulty seeing, but externally there are no abnormalities. He always thought it was a mistake of some sort on the Puppet Kingā€™s part when his soul was forced into the body. The body provided by the puppet King was lean, but solid and sturdy. On the bare skin of his back, however, there are stitches that bite across several regular points along the clay flesh. Black strings are knotted into his skin, and the one who holds these strings can manipulate him against his will. Now that heā€™s escaped, Gavin tries his best to keep them hidden beneath his olden styled clothes.

Personality: Gavin is a quiet personality, reserved and generally keeping to himself. When prompted, he will give his opinion on a matter, but he prefers to just listen. However, when he does speak, he often says things of importance. He is very observant, and quietly takes in his surroundings ā€“ he has a keen memory as well, and will keep in mind what many others would easily forget. It is unknown whether this is the personality of his soul, or whether it is the one fashioned from ages of cruel servitude to the Puppet King. He is well-mannered by nature, and has yet to express rage or sorrow in front of others. Most people arenā€™t even sure if he has smiled before ā€“ but he does. It could be said that he has difficulty expressing his emotions. He rarely raises his voice to others, but always speaks articulately and understandably at a lower tone. Although it is rare in front of people, especially under his current circumstances, he does smile when satisfied, and it lights up his usually gloomy countenance. Despite joining Lace of his own will, he seems to be the most nervous of all of them about the persecution. He is constantly startled by suddenly approaching figures or shadows and the like ā€“ but thanks to this, he is always quick to react when they run into any puppets.

Hobbies
Viola ā€“ although it started as a task from the Puppet King, Gavin eventually grew to enjoy playing an instrument. He can play the violin just as well as a viola, but he prefers the richer tones of the latter to the higher pitches of the former. When he plays, he tries to forget about everything else, which is necessary to him more than ever as he sometimes needs to get away from the tension of the current situation.

Reading ā€“ when he had time, which is rare, Gavin would read what little books were available to him in the Puppet Kingā€™s realm. He greatly enjoyed the distraction from his predicament, and those sentiments follow him even now in the mortal realm.

Watching Others ā€“ some might find it a little uncomfortable or strange, but Gavin enjoys watching other people. He takes in their mannerisms, observe the way they go about their tasks, and just finds enjoyment and relaxation in observing them. However, if someone expresses distress and asks him to stop, he will immediately.

Strategy Games ā€“ he prefers quiet games, such as chess or solitaire. In the Puppet Kingā€™s realm, he often played such games alone. He doubts that there will be times for games on this journey, but thinks it might be interesting to try his skill against another person.

Dislikes:
Manipulation ā€“ in any form, but this specifically applies to the power the Puppet King has over him. He despises not being able to control his own actions.

The Other Puppet Servants - they're cruel ways and malicious actions don't appeal to Gavin. Perhaps once upon a time, he was like them as well... but he wanted to change and so he did.

His Abnormalities ā€“ he dislikes the attention he gets because of the crack on his face and the mismatched eyes. Although he is uncomfortable in most situations of attention, he particularly loathes that garnered by his strange qualities.

Noisy Sites ā€“ being a quiet person himself, Gavin finds it increasingly awkward and difficult to stay in noisy places. He also isnā€™t comfortable with the idea of not being able to hear what is important, especially when his left eye blurs on him occasionally.

Illegible Handwriting ā€“ this is an unusual pet peeve of Gavinā€™s in which he canā€™t stand the sight of obscure or messy handwriting. This would spark one of those rare incidents when Gavin his own opinion first, without prompting.

Likes:
Music ā€“ as a musician himself, he finds himself drawn to peaceful music, particularly that of string orchestras.

Books ā€“ as an aspiring reader, it makes sense that Gavin would have a fondness for books.

Relaxation ā€“ Gavin wishes there were more peaceful times to just lie down and forget about everything, but the importance and urgency of the current mission doesnā€™t allow for that.

Calm Rain ā€“ he didnā€™t get to see pleasant showers in the nightmare realm, so he finds them fascinating and inadvertently soothing.

History: Gavin doesnā€™t remember anything about his human past, and his first memory is from when the Puppet King forced his soul into the new body. He doesnā€™t remember how long he served the king, but he felt that it had been long enough. He initially had overheard Lace and Chilero's plot to escape, but upon being prompted to join them, he was reluctant. He didnā€™t consider the possibility that they would succeed, and only feared the wrath of the Puppet King for when they got caught. He tried to keep them from leaving, but a pull on the strings at his back reminded him of his endless servitudeā€¦ it was enough to give him reason to follow them.

He is now, in his own quiet way, trying to help Lace reach the tombs to bring an end to the Puppet Kingā€™s reign of terrorā€¦ and hopefully to be a puppet no more.

So begins...

Gavin

Terror. Paranoia. Uncertainty.

Only these three feelings raced around Gavinā€™s mind as he sat and waited, head bowed in his room. Those three feelings, one led to the other, dragging his thoughts in endlessly repeating circles. Escape, the idea was? Was such a thing possible? Was such a thing possible when the being they were trying to escape from literally created them ā€“ when the being could literally pull the strings behind each of their actions? It was ludicrous. Samael, the Puppet King was so powerful, so conniving, so frighteningā€¦ could four measly dolls, created by his will, truly escape from his grasp?

Lace and the others seemed to think so. They seemed to think they could even get rid of the puppet king for good. Thus, Gavin had been convinced to go with them. It would all be alright, he assured himself as he quietly gazed around his own dimly lit room, taking in for what could be the last time, his dull walls, the eerie tattered dĆ©cor, the poorly polished floorā€¦ Everything would go just fine. He would never have to see this dreadful place ever againā€¦ but then why did he feel so anxious?

A noise ā€“ Gavin visibly stiffened, startled when light footsteps crept past his room. Paranoia was a terrible thing, in his opinion. It heightened the senses to unnatural lengths so that even the slightest sound set its victim in fright. Cautiously, Gavin cracked the door open and peered outside to see a flash of pinkish purple hair round the corner.

Lace.

It seemed that it was finally time, and thankfully Gavin had prepared beforehand. He took up his long rectangular bag, and quietly slipped out the door. The bag was in actuality, what was once the case for his viola. However, as a mere servant, he possessed no other bag. So against his wishes, Gavin had decided to leave the beloved wooden instrument behind. The cavity within the bag was instead filled with what he deemed essentials ā€“ oil for ball and socket joints, a canteen of the dollsā€™ substitute for water, along with items of more sentimental value ā€“ a deck of tarot cards, rosin, a bookā€¦ However, the cherished viola had no place in this journey. It would have to stay behind.

So in this manner, Gavin silently trailed after Lace, reacting to every shadow that happened his way. Samael for certain had fallen ages ago, but there was no telling for his more loyal servants. Despite the anxiety he felt inside, his countenance remained passive. With solemn face and neutral scowl, he took in his surroundings as he tried to follow Lace. As he slowly paced himself down the stairs, he passed by a line of dimly flickering candles. His crimson right eye caught the light, reflecting his wavering hope. The left, a mismatched blue, stayed shadowed with darkness, reflecting his fear. In the slight illumination, his form could be seen more clearly. An ugly crack could be seen cutting through the pale ā€˜skinā€™ of his face, from the left side of his brow down diagonally to the jaw of his right. His taller stature and darker hair only added to his gloomy expression.

He noted Azerius stepping out of his doorway, and Chilero also seemed to have caught up. Both they asked, ā€œIs it time?ā€ As it was already asked, Gavin saw little need to inquire again. He instead took a place behind Lace and regarded both of the other dolls with a slight nod. Clutching the handle of his viola case tighter, he looked at Lace.

If her plan succeeded, they would all be freeā€¦

Gavin

With viola case slung over one shoulder, Gavin awkwardly accepted the sword from Lace. He wasnā€™t familiar with such an object, and furthermore, had nowhere to place it. Was he to carry it the whole time? Despite his unfamiliarity with the situation, he accepted the following messenger bag and the torchlight as well. A little unnerved by the wildly dancing nature of the flame, he kept it far ahead of him, away from any part of him that could melt or catch fire. It was difficult, but in that manner, he managed to slip down into the cellar with minimal noise.

He trailed behind Azerius and Lace, following the girlā€™s own violet flame as she passed through the passage of the cellar. ā€œLetā€™s pray the Black Puppets are not roamingā€¦ā€ Azerius murmured, and Gavin near visibly flinched. The Black Puppets. There were few more terrifying than they, in Gavinā€™s mind ā€“ in fact, the only more frightening was the Puppet King himself. They would have to do more than pray if the Black Puppets were on the prowl, as if they were caught, the consequence would be worse than simply the end of them.

Now more anxious than before, Gavin cautiously peered through the darkness, using the torch to light the way. He only saw stone walls and floor. Turning to the left, he jolted when he caught sight of Laceā€™s shadow from the front. It had been cast by her own torch, a harmless silhouette. Perhaps he was simply being paranoid? Well, it was under the castle and through the dungeons after allā€¦ who knew what lurked there? For sure, Gavin had never set foot in such a place.

Nonetheless, he kept close to Lace and the others. The only sound in the cold air was the quiet noise of footsteps, echoing through the stone corridors.
