Introduction

Image

Welcome to your new life. A life of pain, death and blood. Welcome to Deadman Wonderland, a private Japanese prison for murderous souls such as yourself. Do you feel welcome? Every in mate in G Ward are different in their own way. Some nice and some not so nice. Do you see them as enemies? How willing are you to trust a complete stranger?

Image
Even thought Deadman Wonderland is a prison, visitors come daily. But not to see just you. They come to watch you and your fellow in mates struggle for survival. What a glorious tourist trap. To them it's a silly game where they route for their favorites as if it were a sports team. This event is called Carnival Corpse. You fight your way for survival and prizes while the other, if they stay alive, face luck and hope the Penalty Game would be in their favor.

Image
You remember the first day you arrived. A large collar like necklace was placed around your neck. You remember the explanation just as well. Poison will constantly be put into your body by this collar. How do you neutralize it? Candy. However its only temporary. How do you get more? Steal from others or earn cast points to purchase more. How do you get cast points, winning fights. Seems simple enough.

Image
However what you weren't aware of was that you were changing along with the others. You are considered a 'Deadman'. Due to this, you may do incredible things with your blood. Much like a cheesy super hero, but with blood. How exciting. You see this as a advantage. Use your blood to win your fights. However, every fight you take part in will not be easy. It's up to you to train and become stronger to fight your way through. Escape doesn't seem to be anywhere near and you've heard some rumors of escapes. Perhaps you are a part of it already.

Image
The key to survival is to work together or betray whoever you see fit. With everyone as a potential threat, how will you possibly sleep at night? Will the guards kill you before you even have a chance to escape? Enjoy your stay~.

~Yuki Nakagawa~
Yuki rubbed her eyes as she looked around her small cell room. It was another usual morning and it the the same usual routine. She wasn't sure what time it was but at this moment she didn't care. After struggling herself out of bed she went to a small bag in the corner of the room. It had been three days and it was about time she had to take the candy. She took a deep breath as she took one of the few she had. In the wonderland, this was needed to live and people were willing to do anything for it. She had to hide her's or else someone would try to take it. She unwrapped the large ball and ate it hating the bitter taste.

She stood to her feet and gripped her hands slightly already hearing the laughs of the guards outside as they passed through. It was about the time that they released the people of g ward for a little 'interaction time'. Most of them just hoped that they would get into fights so that the guards could get a show. She turned her head to the doors as the guard unlocked it. "Alright Dove get out." The male said. She sighed and began to walk out slowly. Soon she looked around a bit before going to the small shop in the wonderland. She had quite a bit of cast points and she would usually help others with it. Of course, saving some for candy. She purchased a few medical wraps and medicines to keep in her room as well.

Soon she began to head to her leaders cell. She wasn't sure if he had left it yet but it didn't hurt to look. She approached the door and looked around slowly. "Gai, it's me. I've brought wrappings for your arm...." Not a single day went by without her feeling guilt about what she had did to him. She promised herself that she would help him in anyway that she could so that one day he would truly forgive her. She didn't really know if he hated her or not but she didn't really mind the hatred. She could understand it completely. But all she wanted to do was help regardless of if he didn't want her to.

Gai Havelock

Of all the things about this place that he hated, Gai's cell had to be close to the top of the list.

It was tiny. Perhaps three by four meters - a bed in one corner, a makeshift desk in another (a few milk crates and some sheets of plywood went a long way), the door in the third, and his coat hanging on a nail beaten into the wall in the fourth. He could barely stretch his legs, let alone get a good run in. His first priority after getting out of here would be to go for a good run in the rain. Rain would be nice.

Oh, the things you miss when you're trapped in Hell.

He was sitting at his desk, as he so frequently was, this time poring over a 'borrowed' map of G-Ward's ventilation systems. It had taken him four weeks to sneak into the guards' office and steal it, but it was worth it, without question. A pen in hand, he scribbled notes in his own bizarre shorthand, denoting entrances and exits and choke points and angles of attack. Everything was, thankfully, going as planned.

At least, thus far.

He heard a familiar voice at the door, and smiled, getting up; she was clever enough to know not to be followed, so he wouldn't need to conceal his map in the hidden panel in his desk. He stepped over to the door, smiling; as usual at this time of morning, he was fully-dressed in a white suit and bow tie, the suit's right sleep pinned in to minimise its movement.

Obtaining any given set of clothing took him about a solid month of negotiations with the guards, so he made sure that they were nice - a range of suits and a few more casual items, in addition to his characteristic lightweight longcoat. That said, he generally didn't wear that unless on official Resistance business or in combat.

"And how are you this morning, Yuki?" he asked, sliding his door open and gesturing behind him, inviting her inside. He'd gotten used to doing such things with only his left arm available; for a moment, the tiniest bit of anger flashed within him at the thought, but it subsided. He'd allowed this to happen to himself, after all. It was her or him.

The question of why he'd chosen her, however, still remained.

Minami's eyes fluttered open, her vision focusing as she awakened. She lay on her back on a decently comfortable wooden bed. The mattress was old and had hardened after use but it was better than nothing and it cradled her form perfectly. She gazed up at the bland metallic ceiling. She felt a sort of melancholy fill her with anxiety. A dream. She thought mildly to herself. However, despite the nonchalance of her thoughts, her emotions were stirring with fear, and another feeling akin to despair. It had been awhile since she had dreams such as the one she now remembered faintly. It was a dream of people drenched in blood staring at her. Pools of sticky red liquid surrounded them. Sometimes even she was covered in the blackened wetness of freshly spilled blood. There was never any light in these dreams; only a darkness that absorbed every sound and reflected every emotion. It wasn't the people that scared her though. It was one person who stood among them with glare that shook her core. A gaze that held contempt, animosity, and condemnation. Yet, she couldn't face that person earnestly even if she wanted to. The woman couldn't speak even in her dreams. Minami rolled onto her side and closed her eyes with a shallow sigh of air. The scar at her throat tingled briefly to as if to remind her that she didn't own a voice of her own anymore. She pushed her thoughts on to other matters even though the seething sensation of her emotions remained, tamped down inside her chest. It was almost time for the residents of G-Ward to start 'interacting'. She needed to cheer up before she faced any of them. Survival comes first. She reminded herself.

Minami moved to the side of the bed and brushed the white blanket off of her. As she stretched, she allowed her gaze to reacquaint itself with her room. It was mostly empty save for the bed, a metal desk, a wooden chair off to the side, and a small locked metal box where she kept all her other items. She didn't feel the need to make it more homey since it was irrelevant to her cause. Extra items didn't help her survive, they only hindered her resolve to leave and move on. After she felt fairly loose and relaxed, she moved to the metal box on the other side of the room after retrieving the key from under her pillow. She unlocked it and retrieved a pair of workout clothing and closed the lid. Minami relocked the box and turned back towards her bed to put to key where it had been. She stored it underneath her pillow and straightened the bed briskly before tossing the set of clothing on the bed. She began to dress herself in the shorts and plain black t-shirt. Once she finished putting on her clothes and a pair of socks and sneakers; she moved to the door to wait patiently. Irritation still mired her emotions but she mentally squeezed her feelings and pushed them completely down. In their stead arose a slight smile and mirthful gaze borne of honest feeling of pleasure, however corrupted it was.

She heard footsteps become louder as they approached her door. Eventually some of them stopped and she heard the faint click that was her door unlocking. Her mirth rose as she thought of the people beyond the door. She felt a false happiness swell higher in her chest and her smile broadened. Minami escaped the room and went to commingle with some of the other residents. Many were happy to see her, waving and returning her smile as she passed them. Some stopped to chat with her with little things happening around the ward while she would nod happily or try to express herself through small gestures. She didn't have it in her to hear the voice emitted from the transmuter today either. Once the tide of residents had turned into only a few here and there in the hallways, Minami made her way towards the training room. When she entered it was surprisingly empty. The smell of sweat and disinfectant clung to the air so she wondered if the other people had already wandered off to other places. She moved to an open area and began stretching. She wanted to make sure she wouldn't cramp when she began to push her body to the limit. As she bent at the waist to reach to the floor, her mind reeled to other more interesting things.

Minami thought back to the carnival corpse with Snowy Owl. She had lost pathetically. Now, as a result, she had no vocal cords. The only voice she could wield wasn't her own. It was a small machine that allowed her to speak but she didn't feel like she was the one speaking whenever she used it. It was like she didn't even really inhabit her own body. Although some of the other inmates who she were somewhat close to were supportive and had helped a lot, it didn't stop the pang of anger and regret blossom in her chest every time she remembered it. She lost because of her own weakness and that was what bothered her. She had thought she was strong enough not to lose and had been arrogant in thinking such things. She stopped stretching and made her way over to the punching bag. She didn't wear any gloves, she wanted to feel every punch. Minami wanted to feel the collision of her fists with the bag until they felt raw. She wanted to feel alive, and strong. Minami never wanted to feel weak again no matter the cost. She felt like she could wile, trick, and brave her way through to the end…but she needed to push herself past the limits of the weakness inside her.

A sharp, cruel clarity burned in her gaze as she stared at the black punching bag. No one was in the room with her and she let her facade come down just enough for her to let her true emotions boil inside her and rise to the surface. Minami quickly tied her long black hair up and readied her stance. Many thoughts battled for attention and she quieted them by resolutely pushing them away. She lashed out, her right fist connecting with the bag and it rocked powerfully with the force of her hit. Her muscles felt relaxed and easygoing like they should have and she recoiled back from the bag as it rebounded towards her and lashed out with her left fist to send it tilting backwards again. Eventually she began working up a pace and her thoughts narrowed on the rhythm. Right, Dodge, Left, Back, Right… Exhilaration filled her as she felt her knuckles burn from the friction with the bag's tough surface. Time passed and sweat began to make her aware of the temperature in the room. Her breath became rough as she pushed herself to keep up the quick pace. Her mind was quiet and calm. Her emotions were as still as a stagnant lake. However, when her muscles began to surpass burning and started to cramp with the need to stop, Minami grabbed and held the trembling punching bag until it stilled. She listened to her ragged breathing and leaned her forehead against the bag, letting her body calm down. The sweaty woman briefly glanced to her knuckles which began to sting to catch her attention. Blood seeped in a minuscule amount from the middle finger's knuckle joint on both hands and the other knuckles were just mostly raw. It would heal perfectly fine in time and was easily ignored compared to the wounds that had carved her flesh in the carnival corpses' and in the past. Her stomach, however, was a different problem. It growled loudly and cramped enough to make her briefly frown. She would have to go get some food from the shops if she wanted something filling that wasn't just medicine in the form of candy; not that she would eat her candies without absolutely needing to after the usual three days time. Minami plastered a warm smile on her face and left the room, prancing towards one of the shops wondering happily what she would eat.

Shiro sat up on the bed sleepily rubbing her eyes. Where was she…? Still sleepy, she waited for her thoughts to gather before she surveyed her surroundings again. Oh, so she was still in there. Feeling a little depressed, she tucked her knees up to her chin, staring ahead sullenly. Hey, ‘sup with that long face? Shiro gave a slight jolt as Shinya’s thoughts entered her, almost hearing her brash voice. There’s no use in moping around ya know! Get up and do the ‘socializing’ thing you’re so good at. “You say it like it’s so easy Shinya…” she muttered slightly, but got off the bed to explore her cell nevertheless. It was somehow comforting to know that Shinya was with her to protect her, at least she wasn’t alone in this hell. “Oh, before I forget.” She strode over to a small bag and took out a piece of candy from it, looking at it with distaste. If there was one thing she absolutely hated, it was the candy. Why call it a candy if it wasn’t sweet? She slowly peeled open the wrapper and stuffed it into her mouth, trying to swallow it without tasting the bitterness. “Bleh!” Shinya took over as Shiro almost choked on the candy, being a reflex that she had developed when she was in an unpleasant situation.

“Well, what an unexpected situation… Now I can finally have some fun in broad daylight.” Shinya smirked slightly as she simply opened the door and ignoring the guards, headed for the ‘interaction time’ How did Shiro even put up with all that nonsense? Even she had only being there for a short while, her patience was slowly being pushed to its limits. Not that she had any in the first place. Well, better let her meet the ‘leader’ or so the rebels said. There were always some people who just didn’t accept their circumstances, no matter where they are. Some just chose to go with it. Her purple eyes flickered as she strode down the halls, trying to find the leader’s cell. She was half interested in that man, being a mysterious terrorist or something, or so she had heard. Getting information around her was not that hard with Shiro around, thank god for her innocent outlook. Mainly because of that, Shinya was able to get so much information without actually showing herself and her personality to others. Now if only she could find it…

Jay froze the very moment he opened his eyes. It was cold, an unfamiliar air brushing against him as he brought himself up. There were no sheets and the only thing standing between him and the open air was the prisoner garb he wore. His stomach groaned as he had barely eaten yesterday. Even worse was that when he saw the games that the prisoners played, he had instantly stayed away. Still, that hadn't stopped the fact that he was going to need a candy and soon.

Still new to the G Ward, Jay had done his best to avoid the other prisoners with a passion. It was strange really. Here he was charged with assaulting several men with acid yet all he wanted to do was avoid violence. He had done all he could to avoid fights and every time he saw the fights announced every six hours, he held his breath and hoped to god he hadn't been chosen.

Luckily, it had been 30 hours since he had gotten here and not one time was he called to fight. This was great, but he doubted that would be the case soon. Eventually, everyone would get called on and he wasn't going to be the exception.

Still, he had to eat so Jay got back out of bed. Because of the quality of the food in the G Ward, the leftovers that people threw away were usually quite edible. Jay had some experience with doing such things previously, dumpster diving just to find something to survive on. Water was free here so even crumbs or leftovers would be a life saver.

Thus, Jay moved down the hall, hugging the side and looking down to avoid making contact with anyone. The first trash can had nothing in it and so did the second. He avoided the third when he saw a pair of guards and moved past them. But right as he moved around the two men in their dark, paramilitary gear, one of them grabbed Jay's shoulder. Fear crept up his spine as he froze up. The two men didn't seem to notice as they moved around to look at him from the front.

"Say," one of them said questioningly, "Aren't you that new kid?"

Jay didn't know how to answer such a thing as the other guard continued, "Yea, he's still green. Hasn't been in a fight yet."

Minami had stopped by her room deciding she would put on some normal clothes and put away her sweaty workout clothes instead of heading straight to the shops. She grabbed on a simple light blue dress that she had bought with the cast points from one of the specials shows in wonderland. It came down to her knees and accented her figure modestly. It also had small pockets. She liked it. It reminded her of the style of clothing that she used to wear before she was charged with murder. Minami pulled out one candy from the three she had in the chest. She unwrapped it and plopped it into her mouth, wincing at the bitter medicine taste. She instantly felt better and lightly touched the metal collar around her throat. The collar injected poison into her system and only the candy could keep her from dying. She had taken her last candy two days ago and now she felt completely refreshed. The feeling was probably only psychological since not taking the candy after two days didn't make her lethargic or weakened. She had amassed a decent amount of points participating in shows and so far, she had been in three carnival corpses. Although she had only won two, she had gained plenty of cast points. She had also made a point of saving most of the points for emergencies as she only had the basic necessities to buy.

She moved to the side bathroom and showered quickly. The bathroom was tiny and once again only held the necessities. When she had first come to G-Ward she had been surprised that the facilities were so accommodating compared to the empty cell with only bunk beds in the regular wards. She hadn't realized that they came with a price. Fighting in games even more dangerous than the 'dog shows', she fought in the carnival corpse. Her stomach was starting to do flips. Once she got out and dried herself off, she pulled on the dress and brushed her hair. Minami glanced over her appearance and deciding that it was satisfactory, approached the door.

Minami walked towards the shop where she could purchase food. As she walked down the halls, she watched the other cell doors pass by her. The hallways were practically empty as many of the deadmen were off doing their own thing. Plus, the amount of deadmen in G-Ward didn't even begin to compare to the amount of regular people in the other wards A though F. Nevertheless there were enough to fill the hallways when everyone was let out for the day. Minami quickened her step and her jubilant smile pulled at the corners of her lips. The cheerful woman rounded a corner and a certain sight caught her attention. A guard had one of the new deadmen by the arm. Another guard stood to the side of the first. Minami scrutinized the situation, her expression not changing in the least. The poor boy looked frightened and it sent pleasurable shivers through her. How interesting. She mused with delight. When she was close enough to touch the boy she faced him and grabbed his hand, exclaiming "Oh here you are!" A sweetened purr entered her voice as she leaned close to him, lightly placing an innocent kiss on his cheek. It was then that she glanced up in surprise and gasped. "Oh! I'm sorry! We had a date today. I'm so sorry he bothered you." She couldn't see the guards expression but they seemed confused and somewhat surprised by her cheerful and innocent appearance and also her automated voice. She noticed the grip on the boy's shoulder loosen just a fraction but it was enough. She turned her gaze back to the boy, "You're already late. I'm so hungry already. Let's go, okay?" She whined, flashing the guards puppy-like eyes. "I'll see you around mister guards. Please punish him another time." She smiled and jerked the boy out of the guards hand astonishing him. The second guard realized what was happening and reached out for her yelling, "Oi! I'm not done talking-" She danced out of reach and laughing mercurially before dashing away with the boy in tow.

When they reached enough distance from the position of the guards she slowed and turned to face the new boy, releasing him. "Sorry about that. It was the only way I could think of helping you." She paused, looking over the boy's features now that she could get a good look at him. He appeared to be meek but she wondered what was under that mask. No one in G-Ward was completely innocent. Which was why the guards were surprised enough to let them escape besides the way she appeared. They were probably just picking on the new guy like a bunch of bullies. In that sense, she was almost a hypocrite. Minami wouldn't pick on him but she would deceive him. She could already see his face full of anguish and betrayal. It teased her like a feather on her bare skin causing her to giggle. The sound was oddly strange to her ears since it no longer sounded like she was the one laughing. It sounded metallic, like a robot with emotions. It disturbed her. She clasped her hands behind her back and grinned happily. "My name's Minami but you can call me Mimi if you like. What's your name? I'm pretty sure you're new here since I've never seen you around. If you need to know anything you can ask me, okay? Are you hungry, because I sure am. Wanna get something to eat? My treat today. You can pay me back by being my friend, okay?" She rambled. Her mechanical-sounding voice held the inflection of friendliness. It was almost real.

The slow dripping of water could be heard from Akira's bathroom as he finished washing his face. There were still small water droplets on his face, rolling down off of his chin and onto his neck, but he didn't bother to wipe them off. Instead, he slipped on his new button up shirt, that already had red stains on it. It was a shame, as this was the only shirt that he had left that hadn't been reduced to rags.

It was almost time for his daily exercise, though it wasn't something he was looking forward to. Some idiots at the gym have been trying to give him a hard-time, and he was beginning to think they would push their luck sooner or later. He had no real clue of the time, considering the fact that they were most likely underground. He finished buttoning up his shirt, but didn't bother tucking in the white cravat he's always seen wearing, since it would only be coated in sweat once he finished working out.

Today, he was hoping that it was going to relatively quiet and relaxing. He was hoping to be able to wake up, spend some cast points on a decent meal, relax with some very light exercising, shower, relax, spend cast points on some lunch, relax, and then spend cast points on his dinner before deciding to settle for the night. As far as he was concerned, it was a supposed to be a good day in this hellhole. However, this was until a certain person decided to make his life even more unbearable.

Quietly, he made his way to the gym, preferring to not draw any unnecessary attention to himself, refusing to make any eye contact with anyone. As he thought, whenever he made it to the gym, he was greeted rudely by the people who were giving him trouble."Hhhhey There Owwll. I sssee you'ree here for you're daillyy traininnngg againn.". He immediately smelled the sickening smell of alcohol and took a step back. He could also notice that the man in question was slurring his words. "What do you want Jin?, and please don't talk in my face with your breath smelling as putrid as it is.. Akira said as he took another step away from Jin.

Jin scowled " Whhyy you punk! You surrre do talk big forr a littlle braat!" Jin threw a punch at Akira, though it was easily blocked. "I don't think it would be best for you to try fighting me in your current condition. Come back whenever you're sober and maybe I'll reconsider.". Jin jerked his hand out of Akira's grasp and left, turning around before he exited the gym to give Jin a glare. He let out a sigh as he sat down and tugged the gloves onto his hands before he began to stretch. It's been quite some time since he last worked out, and he didn't want to pull ideal to pull any muscles. Akira wasn't one to do strength workouts, instead, he likes to work on his endurance. He knows that he won't get much out of strength, considering how small he is, so he does his best to squeeze in what little strength workouts that he can.

It didn't take long at all for him to finish his exercises, and he was grateful as it would definitely give him more time to relax. He hasn't had any recent Carnival Corpses, and he was genuinely hoping that he wouldn't have any soon. While he hasn't lost one yet, he isn't so keen on having to fight until he finally looses and gets a body part taken away. It was a cruel system indeed.

~Yuki Nakagawa~
She smiled as she saw the male open the door. It was nice to hear his voice after a long night. He was like a hero to her after all and she owed it to him that she could survive and fight on her own. She was no longer a scared little girl. Well, at least not scared of others.

"Well I suppose i can't complain sir. I'm a bit regular as usual." She said before placing the medical supplies on the table. She began to unbox the wrappings while remembering a few things. "I spoke with Sakuya last night. The poor thing is terrified out of her mind."

Sakuya had been a wonderland residant a bit after Yuki had arrived and was in the cell next to her. She hadn't thought much of her but became good friends. Eventually she had find the love of her life here and was not pregnant with a child. She hadn't expected to face the babys father in a Carnival Corpse.

"The boy is healing up nicely from the lose of his liver. Nothing seems to be wrong with him. But i fear that the poor girl may be going into a depression.... It's such a sad thing to see a young girl of 18 pregnant in such a place." She sighed and patted the chair for him to sit in. "She often rambles about how they may take her baby away from here. It's truly a sad thought."

She couldn't keep the girl out of her head no matter what she did. What if they truly did think about taking the child away? Those monsters couldn't possibly do something so awful, could they?

"Sakuya, hm?" Gai mused, glancing back to his papers, his eyes with that slightly-narrowed look they got when his mind was racing through map after tactic after plan. He bent over his desk, picked up a pen and scrawled a few basic notes on a loose sheet of paper, connected by lines.

After perhaps half a minute, he stood back up, stepping over to Yuki. "Due to the small size of the package, I may be able to extract the child prior to the primary plan. It would draw suspicion from the guards, but I will not permit a child to be raised in this hell. Assuming all goes according to plan, escape will occur within two weeks of the baby's passage and Sakuya will be reunited with her child."

Seeing her unpacking the medical supplies, Gai shrugged off his suit jacket and undid his bowtie, before beginning to unbutton his shirt - all things he'd become rather deft at doing one-handed. Living life one-handed was a trial indeed, but one he'd adapted to quickly enough. He found himself going to do things with his right hand less and less, which was at once pleasing and terrifying.

"Keep the two of them emotionally stable as best you can. Both of them present significant tactical advantages," he said, before his eyes softened a little and his shirt fell to the ground, exposing his well-muscled body, criss-crossed with bandages. As he moved over to her, he added, voice softer now, "And they're going through a rough time together, too. Best that they have each other. To find love in this place... a tragic thing, but at once, a beautiful thing. We should all wish ourselves unto it."

Oh, how he felt like he was going to die. Jay was absolutely frozen when they wrapped around him, their arms like coiling snakes waiting to wring his neck. Luck was on his side, however, and by the time he had opened his eyes, Minami had grabbed his hand. Jay would have freaked even more but that kiss, oh that kiss, stunned him. He wasn't any trouble once that happened and before he knew it, Minami had taken him out from between the two guards and into another den of lions.

Jay didn't feel it at first, but the moment Minami began to talk, Jay felt off. She was pretty, pretty to the point of strangness. He had always been wary of people, but the more he looked at Minami's mechanical gestures and overly empowering smiles, Jay was starting to feel like this lady was more dangerous than he thought.

But that kiss was starting to make his cheek feel hot. Jay swore there must have been something in her lips as he felt a blush consume the rest of his face. Suddenly those previous thoughts of suspicion began to fade and his embarrassment took its place. The attention was nice and the look in her eyes were glinted in the ceiling lights. It didn't even seem to bother him when she began to speak.

"My name's Minami but you can call me Mimi if you like. What's your name? I'm pretty sure you're new here since I've never seen you around. If you need to know anything you can ask me, okay? Are you hungry, because I sure am. Wanna get something to eat? My treat today. You can pay me back by being my friend, okay?"

Wow, she talked alot ...

Of course, when he got down to it, she didn't seem that bad. She wasn't asking what he had done or if how he had gotten into Deadman Wonderland, no, just something simple. His name and if he was hungry. Jay nodded. Getting something to eat seemed good.

"Y-yea . . . I'm . . . Jay," Jay was twiddling his fingers, "Food is good . . . thank you."

He tried his best to avoid the friend comment. Companion, maybe; person of interest, perhaps; but friend, no one could be that close to him. Jay was to paranoid for that . . .

Minami hid an inward chuckle at his estranged expression. He appeared to be agonizing over her friendliness and she suspected he was suspicious about her. Oh well. He doesn't seem too put off. Which means he isn't sure I think. She mused silently, watching him with interest as he twirled his fingers while he replied. "Y-yea . . . I'm . . . Jay. Food is good . . . thank you." His stutter amused her. She could feel a sort of mild excitement. It was akin to a predator laying eyes on their prey and looking for weaknesses as the hunt began. Not that she was going to hunt him down; unless he fought against her in the carnival corpse. Then she would have to reconsider that notion. Minami nodded to signify that she was listening to him. "Isn't food always good?" Minami teased, winking at him so he didn't take her teasing as mocking.

She turned on her heel and clasped her hands behind her back and she started the rest of the way towards the shops. "C'mon then." She called to him, glancing over her shoulder with a smirk. Jay didn't seem like the type to survive very long in Wonderland but the more she thought about his reactions and his demeanor, the more she wondered. She hadn't missed that he hadn't agreed to be her friend. Most idiots just absently agreed, charmed by her smile and aggressively friendly attitude. Although, most of those kinds of people were male too. The female deadmen were a bit harder to warm over since most of them were just as clever as Minami. Sometimes. She added to that thought. They used their feminine assets as well; albeit in different ways. The only exceptions were the women who didn't care to make friends or put on any kind of illusion that showed otherwise. Those types of women were the ones who were either extremely confident that they wouldn't lose in a carnival corpse, or maybe that they were already resigned to death which made them unafraid of the outcome. Minami was too cautious to act that way and plus, after the last carnival corpse, she didn't have the same kind of confidence she used to in her abilities. She could kill without feeling guilty about it at all and was completely ruthless. She hadn't been named after the Shrike for no reason. It was a bird of prey, being smaller and cute, but no less violent. It stabbed its prey on the thorns of the acacia tree after capturing them. Minami was proud of that name. However, the last battle had put a hitch in her unwavering confidence and had made her infinitely more wary but also more determined to be stronger.

Minami stopped in front of the shop. A few other deadmen were there and she waved and smiled politely at them. One in particular made a point to talk to her. Tsukiya had been in G-Ward for just a while longer than Minami and he was two years older than her. There wasn't much known about him since he wasn't talkative guy although she knew him for the pervert that he was. He had a bit of a sadistic streak but it was definitely more subdued than hers was. His appearance often made him encounter two types of people. There were people afraid of him because of his shady, angry appearance or people who looked up to him because he was decently strong. He had won his share of carnival corpses. Minami hadn't ever had to face him and for that she was grateful. He wasn't a terrible guy, just a bit of a ruthless idiot with his squinty eyes and muscular body. "Hey Tsukiya." She greeted joyfully. Tsukiya grinned and if she hadn't known him, she would have been taken aback. It looked menacing but that was just his natural smile. "Hey." He gruffly replied, taking a quick peek at Jay before looking back to her. "You're making more friends as always. Here to eat?" He commented stupidly. Minami inwardly scowled at him but her exterior smile didn't change as she nodded. Minami didn't feel like asking so she tilted her head in a questioning look and Tsukiya raised a thin brow. "What?" He paused analyzing her expression and impatience gnawed at her. "Oh. I came to pick up some candy from down the hall and stopped by here. I haven't taken a candy in two days and not dying from poison sounds nice. Also, ya know." He jerked a thumb at the men behind him and grinned. He was hanging out with the usual gang is what he meant and Minami chuckled, turning towards the stand. "I see. Have fun then Tsuki." She playfully responded, stepping up to the counter.

Minami looked to Jay curiously wondering what he wanted before deciding to give him a minute while she ordered what she wanted. Minami liked sweet things, and even more so things with bread. The deliciously sweet fluffy bread that melted in her mouth….She was ecstatic just thinking about it. She pointed to the yakisoba bread before realizing the lady wouldn't understand. Sometimes it was so annoying to have to use that mechanical voice all the time. Sometimes she just wished there was someone who could understand her without needing to hear 'that' voice. Although, that might also mean getting to know someone enough for them to see just a bit of her true intentions. Minami focused on the task at hand, "Ah, I'll take the yakisoba bread. Oh! I also want the anpan and melon bread too!" She rocked on her heels with true excitement. There weren't many things she enjoyed doing in wonderland but eating happening to be on the short list. She then gestured to Jay, "Also, whatever he's having is with mine." She pulled out her cast points card and stepped aside so Jay could order what he wanted. Minami watched him, wondering what he would get. It's often said that the foods people like reflect their inner states. Minami could figure this was true of herself. She used to be a sweet lady and therefore liked sweets but they were covered with thick fluffy bread. A thick outer shell. Although, it was ever so delicious no matter what it was represented. Impatience bit deep again as her stomach ached silently.

Jay was quite confused with Minami. As friendly as she seemed and as happy as she put herself to be, more and more seemed to indicate an angrier person below the surface of her mask. It puzzled him to no end as Jay watched Minami smile happily at Tsukiya. As soon as the older g-ward prisoner began to talk, Minami seemed to get incredibely irritated. One second was all it took for Jay to catch her. It was like a crack in the mask where he could see something stirring inside the beautiful dark haired girl. But just as quickly as he saw it, Minami's irritation disappeared.

Once Tsukiya left, Jay began to look at the food in wonder and excitement. There was just so much to eat, so much delicious looking food. Jay was absolutely drooling, but held back his hunger quite well as soon as he could get a grip on the reality of things. Being in a prison changed much of how he viewed things. Now, everytime food was presented to him, Jay thought an extra seventeen times before jumping . . . compared to the initial five thoughts of fear, paranoia, and insecurity.

After his numerous thoughts, Jay blinked as she saw Minami grab the two sweet bread. When he watched her try to order without speaking, it seemed quite intreguing to see other people not understand. Pointing aside, Jay could tell what she wanted the moment her eyes shifted towards the bread and a smile cross her face as she looked at it closer. Then there was the hand signals, the body gestures, the instinctive voice, etc etc. How strange; perhaps, people should learn how to interpret others much more efficiently.

But back to the actual bread!

Jay couldn't help but feel off about eating sweets in a replacement to a meal. Still, he didn't want to patronize someone feeding him, thus he kept to himself and pointed at a healthy broth of chicken and vegitables. It looked warm in that bowl of his and he was absolutely famished for such a meal. Minami paid, the broth barely putting a scratch on her funds, and Jay pulled back from food line.

"You . . . really like sweets," Jay meekly muttered as he ate his soup, "don't you . . ."

~Yuki Nakagawa~
She carefully began to remove the males wrappings and pouted seeingt he injury. Everytime she would, it would make her very sad and fill her with depressed thoughts. "You see that? That is all your fault. It's ALL your fault." She thought to herself losing her train of thought before coming back and placing the old wrappings down.

"Y..... Im sure she will be very thankful for any assistance. I wouldn't want to see a child raised here either... Having to struggle to fight for it's life everyday. And if those monster put it in Carnival Corpse, who knows what would happen!"

Emotions were always scary for Yuki. She feared that she would one day hurt the one she loved and maybe even kill them. She hated having those thoughts and wish they wouldn't happen. Soon she finished putting on the wrappings and smiled. "All done sir." She said with a nod.

She soon began to look out towards the cell doors wondering what the other deadmen may be doing. She sighed slightly hoping no carnival corpse was schedule for this month. Or ever. "What may we be discussing today sir?" She said while holding her hands together worriedly. She wished the rebellion would happen soon but she didn't want to rush anything or put anyone in danger.

"Unfortunately, we cannot put it past those monsters not to put them in the Carnival," Gai said, a distinctly sad expression upon his features at this admission - and beneath that, a glowing, red-hot fury. His hatred for the Carnival was boundless; it was those who conducted it, after all, who had stolen his arm. Stolen his ability to fight. Stolen his life.

He gave Yuki a smiling nod as she stated that she had finished her work, and flexed what remained of his shoulder to check that it held; as always, they did. She was a skilled medic, one who could have saved him a lot of work if he'd met her before he'd ended up in this place. For now, he was just thankful that they had a medic - if they didn't, a lot more people were going to die than needed to.

"What may we be discussing today, sir?"

"Call me 'Gai', please," the suit-clad soldier smiled. Better to keep things informal - the guards would be less suspicious, and at any rate, he and Yuki had known each other long enough that a bit of familiarity was expected. That said, this wasn't the first time he'd asked.

"But to answer your question, I understand that we have a new Deadman. We would do well to speak with him. Grabbing Minami could assist; from what I hear, he's young and impressionable. She's rather good at persuading such people."

Minami stashed her cast card back into the folds of her pockets and adjusted her grip on the packaged food bundled in her hands. "You . . . really like sweets," Jay commented mildly, taking a sip of his soup. "don't you . . ." Minami didn't reply, thinking on his statement a bit. Although they were similar to snacks, she counted them as meals. They packed a punch with carbohydrates and calories and it was better than some health-freak food. Considering the workouts she put herself through every morning, it was necessary to pack her body with as many nutrients and carbohydrates as possible. Plus, it didn't bother her that the sweet taste made her taste buds scream in delight. She eyed the soup bowl in Jay's hands with a curious look before chuffing lightheartedly. It looked like a savory kind of dish. Something like that would taste rotten to her. Jay looked liked he needed the healthy meals anyway. Snacks wouldn't do him any good, no matter how filling they were. She peered down at his body this time.

He didn't look like the type to survive in a fight in the bigwigs around wonderland. An image of Yuki floated to her mind and she just barely held back the shudder. That woman had never lost a fight so far and she had taken Gai's arm. That type of strength would wreck havoc on a boy like Jay and most likely Minami would have a hard time too. Nevertheless, on a closer inspection, he wasn't entirely scrawny and disgusting. He just didn't seem like he would have a six pack under that uniform. Minami dismissed the thoughts, beginning to feel like a pervert as she scrutinized his body with a smile still plastered on her face.

She abruptly turned to hide the blush and grit her teeth. Survival. Yes, I was assessing his capabilities. He's nothing to me. A pawn in this game. She excused, but an inner voice chided her. It's just been a long time since anyone new has been around..Since I've had a new toy. Minami quickly cooled off and looked to Jay. "Yeah, I have a reason. Want to go eat somewhere less busy to eat?" She said not making a comment to his uneasy attitude or telling what exactly her reason was for liking sweets although her nice tone didn't change. He didn't need to know about her workouts or why she was so desperate to be strong. It would just lead to further complications. However, she had the feeling he would notice her avoidance of the topic. He might ask later… Minami hoped he would catch the hint. "If you're coming then let's go. It's a once in a lifetime chance. I also want to talk to you more." She giggled with a wink over her shoulder as she turned to walk back the way they had come. They could speak away from prying eyes; Maybe that way, Jay would finally relax and loosen up and be more forthcoming with her. Minami itched to figure out what the little newbie was all about. After all, if it came down to a carnival corpse; she was going to be ready.

Jay was quick to nod his approval with the change in venue. People were already starting to look at him weirdly, either because he was with a cute girl . . . or he was about to be made into chow by said cute girl. Jay gulped, but followed anyways as he didn't want to seem rude. However, that didn't stop him from showing his nervousness.

He felt like a prey in her game, being tethered along while she danced, played, and frolicked as she saw fit. That being said, it was strange that Jay felt himself just pulling towards Minami. He knew something was wrong and that it was only a matter of time before things went to somewhere far less preferable . . . but perhaps an illusion was nice. This was the longest he had ever interacted with anyone and this image of normalcy was comforting in some ways.

Still, that didn't mean he wasn't keeping his guard up. He had noticed her willingness to not answer questions. Her dodge had given him more reasons to keep watch of her. Her wink to him had given him chills, but they were good chills, the type of chills you would have when you woke up after a long nap. Was she doing that specifically to get at him?

When they did find a quiet seating arrangement in the hallway, Jay sat down quickly. The spaces in front of him were quite nice and comfy looking, but so was the seating next to him. He prayed to whatever god that existed that she would not sit next to him . . . lest she smell his fear. Of course, God didn't seem to like him, so he wasn't too sure if that prayer would work.

"T-thanks . . . Miss Minami . . ."

Akira had been wandering the halls of G-Block for some time now, it wasn't that he didn't have anything else important to do, it's just been a while since he's seen the whole place. It would be an understatement to say that G-Block was big. The whole attire ward was huge, having many residents, shops and rooms for entertainment purposes. He noticed that it's been quite a long time since he was able to see the outside of Deadman Wonderland. He had wondered how long he has exactly been in G-Block, but it wasn't something that he let his mind dwell on for too long.

He could clearly remember his first Carnival Corpse, whenever he was forced to fight his sister. He did was hesitant to fight her, but it has been something just had to be done. To be honest it's almost ended in a tie, Akira only won by a cheap shot, a cheap shot that took his sister's life. He doesn't remember much after that event, but he did know he regretted it. It would've been easier for him to just throw the match, but he wasn't so keen on risking the chance of getting an even harsher punishment. Eventually he learned to push past it and continue on, winning two more Carnival Corpses.

He was about to return to his cell and probably do more personal training there, but he then noticed just how hungry he was. Akira was planning on eating later on, but decided against it. It would be better to at least have a snack before he trained some more, as it would give him the energy to train even longer. He spent his cast points on a protein bar and a water bottle, it just seemed appropriate for the situation. Whenever he entered his room, he sat the things he had bought on a desk. His cell was bigger than most, only because he extended it with the cast points he had won mostly from the Carnival Corpses.

He reached under his bed for a box full of 'candies', which, when you tasted it you wouldn't even consider it a candy, given how bitter it is. It has been three days since he had taken his last one, and he was lucky to not have dropped dead. He grabbed one of the box, unwrapped it and popped it into his mouth, barely wincing at the taste at the bitter taste he has now gotten used to. He made note of time on his digital clock of when he took the so called candy.

She blushed and smiled while hearing him. She couldn't help but be formal to those she looked up to. It was a old habit of hers. She would often call the higher up nurses formally as well. She was always use to being polite that way. Calling someone by their name was a odd thing to do to her.

"O-Oh oops... I suppose i can't control myself from doing that." She said with a small giggle. She then nodded. "Alright then, Gai." She said while listening to him. Sher recalled the names and hearing about a new comer. She wondered what this new deadman was like. Hopefully it wasn't a young soul.

"Yes. That sounds like a good idea. The poor thing. Arriving here must be a large change." She said before gasping. "Oh. Minami? Well she may be a bit difficult for me to persuade. She doesn't seem to trust me very much." She said while giving a innocent smile. She only meant good towards all people but she was use to being seen as different.

Minami paused misstep as he sat down in the hall. She was somewhat surprised he had the gall to sit down before her but that was just her sadistic complex talking. She gazed down at him as he got comfy, "T-thanks . . . Miss Minami . . ." He muttered. Internally she scowled at him. "Mimi." She corrected, outwardly grinning mischievously. Minami took the space next to him but she put space between them because all his squirming and nervous jitters would annoy her if she sat any closer. Minami set her buns on her lap and thought about which to eat first before finally choosing the yakisoba bun. It opened the plastic packaging and slid it down the roll before taking a small bite. The sweetly sour flavor mesmerized her and she chewed slowly, memorizing the taste.

Minami stopped after a few more bites and turned to Jay. "So, I'm not going to pry or anything so you don't have to tell me why you ended up here.." She turned back to her bun and took a tiny nibble, thinking on how to get closer to him. "But I figure it wouldn't hurt to be friends. Plus, in this place you are going to need it." Her gaze darkened at the thought of the other deadmen; the menacing ones at least. She remembered when she had first came here. She had been a wreck and they hadn't taken any mercy on her. She would have died if not for the fact that she was somewhat strong and had a horribly amazing reason to keep living. She didn't want to see Jay end up like that for reasons she knew were selfish but she also wasn't going to put in a whole lot of effort to save him. Also, friends were just another way of saying temporary allies that at any time could be total strangers.

"I assure you not all of us are so nice or rather easygoing." She mumbled, the automated voice crackling a bit with her chuckle. "Have you read the rulebook? The one about the candy; also do you know about the carnival corpse?" She prompted, once again taking another tiny nibble from her bun.

Jay frowned with more sips of his soup entering his mouth. He did read the book and was aware of the candy, but just everythign about the carnival corpse seemed to stab at him in the gut.

It had mixed his two worst fears, people and violence. There, in the ring, the people would aim to hurt him. It wasn't just paranoia either, where he just simply shrugged it off until he got away, Jay would be stuck with that person until he or whoever the hell he was versing got knocked out. That meant he had to use his powers to win, but how could someone NOT hurt someone else when they have god forsaken acid blood!

And then, of course, there was the punishment. He really didn't want anything happening to him. Minami was the first Deadman he had talked to and even she had lost her voice. Minami's reaction to her own voice was what scared him the most, as she seemed to miss and hate her new voice. He couldn't ever do that to someone else . . . or to himself. What if he or his opponent had to lose an eye, or a leg, or an arm, or even . . . privates.

God, that was shudder inducing. Still, he needed to get candy somehow. Thus when Minami's eyes began to burrow into him, he relented and spoke once more.

". . . yes Ms. Min- I . . . I mean Mimi," he muttered after gulping down another spoonful, "I don't . . . I don't like people . . . or violence. I think I need to have candy too . . ."

Gai smiled down at Yuki as she giggled and blushed at his request, a little more genuinely than usual. She was an endearing young woman, if nothing else; he could not deny that he cared for her, and he had tried. He'd lost his arm because of his feelings towards her; he was unsure if he'd be able to sacrifice her, if the time came. He recalled, for a moment, what he'd said to her that fateful day.

"We can't both become the same pawn that's made to fall..."

That held as true now as then. He knew well enough that a lot of people would die when the time came for them to escape; a sacrifice he was willing to make. Every time he thought about it, he felt a pang of guilt go through him; but it was liveable. After all, he knew what their lives were worth. Better to die on your feet than live on your knees...

"Then we'd best get him out of here, hadn't we?" Gai smiled confidently, as he shrugged his shirt, suit jacket and bowtie back on. It occurred to him that while he could undo the bowtie swiftly, tying it one-handed was a skill that was well and truly beyond him.

"I don't suppose you could assist me with my tie?"
he asked, with a little bit of a sheepish grin.

"And I can't see why she wouldn't trust you. You do have something of a reputation, but I don't think that any of us are what you'd call angels in battle. It's the reality of the Carnival, nothing more. But, if you feel that there's a problem, I might have a chat to her. She seems to trust me; something to do with my good looks and charm, I suppose,"
he said, with a grin as he added the last few words. If nothing else, his ego was a rather handy tool for keeping up his own morale.

~Yuki Nakagawa~
She smiled and nodded while hearing him. She walked to the door and opened it slightly before looking to see if anyone was there. "Hehe yes well, not all people are as trusting of me as you are. I suppose i only brought it upon myself." She slowly opened the door completely and walks out and sighs slightly. She then smiled before turning to him. "So. Where might they be? I don't know much about the youth so... I don't know what they enjoy doing."

She always spoke as if she was far older than she really was. She was use to belittling herself because she knew that she was a awful person on the inside. However, on the outside, she tried her best to prevent that from coming out and covering who she really was.

She rubbed her chin slightly and sighed. "Well... Perhaps they are eating..... Maybe we can check in the eating area." She said before looking to Gai for approval. It wasn't usual that they recruited but when they did, they always tried their hardest to convince people to join the cause.

Gai let out a little bit of a laugh at this. "Don't act as though we're so ancient, Yuki," he smiled. "On the outside, we'd be still be young. Still running around at parties and drinking our nights away with friends."

He sighed a little as he stepped out, checking that everything in his room was concealed and in-order. With that, he slipped the door closed, hearing it seal shut with a soft click. Deadman Wonderland was, if nothing else, secure - it wasn't as though they could afford an escape, not with the power of the Deadmen on the line. Of course, the designers were only human, and had made numerous mistakes in its construction.

Mistakes that Gai was going to exploit.

On Yuki's suggestion, he made for the cafeteria, and arrived there promptly, the bright-haired woman in tow. He strode through confidently, deciding not to grab any food - he detested Deadman Wonderland's food, after all, and stayed away from it at all costs; he ate what little he had to, and stole the guards' food where he could. Instead, he simply strode right for the distinct sound of Minami's mechanical voice, and a boy sitting opposite her whom she didn't recognise.

"Good morning, Mimi," he said, with a friendly nod and a smile to the young girl, before turning his attention to the unrecognised boy, who - as expected - looked scared out of his mind. He extended a hand for the boy to shake.

"I don't believe we've been introduced, I'm afraid," he said. "My name is Gai Havelock. You are?"

Jay pulled back from Gai, suprised by the blond's presence. Being paranoid, Jay was always usually aware of his surroundings and never had a problem detecting people. Not many could sneak up on him and the more the teen thought about it, perhaps he was far too focused on Minami to react properly. Jay stuttered as he poked at Gai's hand.

"H-h-hello Mr. Have-lock . . ."

Jay was aware of both Gai and Yuki. Gai, as Jay looked at him, was the scary blond guy that completely destroyed at his Corpse Carnivals, only defeated by Yuki. He looked like the type that was suave and confident, Jay's opposite in all regards. However, there was other parts of the blond that Jay couldn't discern and that was the most scariest part about him. Gai was hiding something and Jay was not comfortable.

Yuki was even scarier. She may have been nice then and there, but Jay had seen her fight with Gai. That other part of her, that darker and cruel soul of a creature, was . . . incomprehensible to him. The destructiveness was so far out and joyful in its ability to kill and maim, the mere presence of Yuki was giving the teen a nervous tick to him. Thusly, Jay tried to avoid Yuki's gaze, but sweat when he realized she was looking at him.

"I-I'm Jay . . . Jay Valus . . ."

"Please, call me Gai," the tall blonde smiled. He could see from the start that Jay was terrified out of his mind - scared to death of everything that was going on. Hardly surprising - the boy's eyes flickered between the two veterans.

So, he must've seen what the recording of his fight with Yuki; he hardly blamed the boy for being terrified of her after witnessing that. He'd seen and done many terrible things in his life, but even he shuddered a little at those memories. It had taken more than a little while until he'd been able to look her in the eyes again.

"A pleasure, Jay," Gai nodded. "A shame we should meet under such circumstances, isn't it? But, not much we can do - not yet, at least. How are you?"
