Jacob Arell

An adventurous 16 year old.

0 · 413 views · located in Astor Town Hall

a character in “Death is not Final”, as played by RJApple

Description

Age: 16

Physical traits: Jake is an average height for his age. His hair is medium-length and a light brown hue. He usually wears a flannel button up or long sleeved t-shirt, jeans, and hiking boots. His coat is a gray one, with four torso pockets as well as some for his hands. Although he is from the south, he lacks a southern drawl.

Equipment: A tan MOLLE backpack, attached to the back of which is a collapsible shovel, on the right a small hatchet, and on the left a metal canteen. In addition to that, there is rectangular canteen in a pouch, on a strap, which is slung across his body. A belt, in addition to the one used to keep his pants fastened about his waist. Affixed to said belt is a single-edged knife. His wallet, inside which is a driver's license, first-aid certification card, library card, and a little cash. A pocket knife in his (wait for it) pocket.
-Backpack contents: A coil of 550 paracord, small/medium-sized first-aid kit (2x small gauze wraps, 3x rectangular gauze pads, 4x packets of sterilizing wipes, 3x charcoal tablets, small roll of medical tape, 3x aspirin tablets), 1x multitool, 1x small monocular, 2x granola bars, 1x warm hat, 1x pair of warm leather gloves, 2x spare pocket knives, 5x water purification tablets, 3x AAA batteries, 3x AA batteries, 1x 9v battery, flashlight, flint and striker, small pouch of kindling, map of Washington state, compass, map of the U.S., 1x pocket mirror, 2x combs, 1x compact toothbrush, 1x small tube of toothpaste, 2x spare shirts, 1x spare pair of pants, 1x journal, a few pens, empty space for gathered items

Abilities/traits: He is extremely calm under pressure. He is competent and responsible around firearms. He is not particularly strong, but has a high endurance. He has much hiking, camping, and travel experience, despite his age. He has an eye for detail. He has a working knowledge of wilderness survival. He has had civilian level first-aid training and certification.

Background: Jake was born in Georgia, about an hour's drive south of Atlanta. He led a rather normal life, much to his dismay. He had a deep desire in his hear for travel and adventure. It was not merely youthful restlessness, but something that was built into him. He tried to be content and thankful for his normal life. However, that longing, that restlessness, was not an addiction, but something that was a part of his very being; existing without it was a mere impossibility. Jake pursued all manner of adventurous activities, rock climbing, sailing, hiking, camping, travelling. It was one of these trips that brought the young Arell to Washington. He was preparing to embark on a long trek through the Washington countryside with a couple of friends. However, before they could depart, the outbreak struck. Unfortunately, Jake's friends met their demise at the hands of the ravenous beasts that now haunt the land. The loss of his friends was a great blow, but it didn't break him. He resolved to keep his head, having seen firsthand what panic can result in. Jake had always been known for his calmness under pressure, now, that was possibly his greatest asset. A survivor, that is what he was going to be. That is what he had to be. At least, that's what he decided. Perhaps he was right. Then again, perhaps not.

So begins...

Jacob ambled into the town hall's main room, a certain soreness clinging to his gait. Looking around, he noticed people chatting in small groups, however, none of them were faces he recognized, at least, none he recognized very well. Since he was a newer arrival, Jake's pool of friends was somewhat smaller than many others. Also, he practically threw himself into the fray, when he first arrived, volunteering for runs and what not. This left little time for a social life. Instead of attempting to infiltrate a conversation, Jacob decided to find a seat and write a little. Anticipating there likely would be no one to talk to, and not really desiring to converse in the first place, he had brought his journal and a pen along. After a little searching, he soon found an empty chair and began scribbling away.

Marcus ran through the town halls door and held it open as a group of men in military uniform entered followed by a few people who looked shacked up as they made their way to the other people that were alredy there. "Get some rest men, I'll set up the radio transmitter and see what the situation is" he said as he made his way to a unoccupied space in the room and opened up his backpack to grab the radio transmitter.

Jacob looks up from his journal, an inquisitive look on his face. He had never seen this soldier before, rather, this man he assumed to be a soldier. Jacob quickly sizes the man up, the proverbial gears beginning to turn. The uniform, the way the man carries himself, an entourage of similarly clad subordinates; everything about this man practically screams 'soldier'. Being the polite young man that he was, Jake decides he should introduce himself. Aside from it being the polite thing to do, if something happened, it was probably a good idea to have this man as his friend, at least, to have made a good impression. Standing up, Jake closes his journal, caps and slides the pen into his pocket, then begins approaching the soldier. Once he was close enough to be heard without raising his voice too loud, Jacob greets the man in a friendly tone, "Hey, sorry to bother you, but I don't think we've met," he says, extending a hand for the customary handshake, "I'm Jacob Arell."

"Hello Jacob, the names Marcus Paul" he replies in a monotone voice without taking his gaze off the radio as he continues to set it up. Even though the kid was trying to be friendly the first thing he had to do was get the radio working to get a situation report of the undead threat. Without looking up from the radio he grades a knife from his pocket and begins to work on the last step to get the radio working.

Jake lowers his hand, realizing the man was rather concentrated on finishing the task. "Nice to meet you Marcus. Do you need any help with that?" he inquires. Jacob was no expert in electronics, but he figured he would offer to help in any way he could.

"No need I just about---" Marcus almost finished his sentence but was interrupted by the radio turning on, he then grabbed the communicator and began to talk in it, "does anyone read? This is Genereal Marcus Paul of the Astor military base, serial code 567899 do you copy?". At first there was static but then a voice came into contact, "we read you loud and clear sir, this is leutenet Jeffery, serial code 198764, we are currently stationed in a safe zone in Seattle"

"Roger that leutenet, what's the situation at seattle?"

"It's bad sir the infected is in the city and the blockade didn't do much, but the safe zone is secure, but I warn you sir...do not go to...roads blocked...infected..."

The radio then lost signal followed by Marcus giving a sigh, he was sure that almost everyone heard the conversation due to the fact that the other person was talking through the radio itself.

Jacob listens to the brief conversation between Marcus and the lieutenant. Once the radio cuts out, he speaks once again, worry lacing his voice, "Was he talking about the safe-zone in Seattle?"

"I guess so, I never heard of a safe zone until now" Marcus replied. He then stood up leaving the radio behind to join with the other soldiers.

Jacob gains a curious look in his eye when he hears Marcus' words, "Wait, you haven't heard about the Red Cross camp? What led you to the town hall, then?"

"Simple, a place like this is very sturdy and could easily become a base of operations, and besides even if I knew that Seattle was a safe zone I would rather hold out in the old army base then try my luck to go to the safe zone" Marcus replied to Jacobs question.

"Well, allow me to offer you a welcome then, to our little slice of temporary paradise," replies Jacob, while giving a deliberately exaggerated motion of presentation. "The plan was, and is, as far as I know, to gather as many survivors here as possible, and, then, head to the Seattle Red Cross camp. Perhaps you and your merry band would like to tag along? Although, I am not the one to be making such decisions, I have a feeling those in charge won't mind the extra hands. So, what do you say?"

Marcus laughed at Jacobs proposal, "kid you must be kidding me, let me ask you a question, what happens when everyone gets the news that there is a safe haven in one area?" He questioned Jacob.

"More survivors show up, refugees who need help. Sure, a few bad apples might pop up now and again, but if your lieutenant truly is at this safe zone, then his men plus yours, and whatever survivors are willing to volunteer, would be more than enough to fend of any attackers," he replies.

Marcus sighed, "that's correct, but let's say during the beginning people come in droves to get to this safe zone and that the infected attack them on the way. Some people make it but those that don't make it turned into infected and when more people come it gets herder to get through the swarm until it becomes a death trap when you try to go to the city" he finished explaining why it was a bad idea to go to the safe zone, "you understand now? But if you don't feel free to go to the safe zone" he then waited for Jacobs response.

Jacob thinks a moment before responding. He seems to be weighing his options, carefully. "You're right. The safe zone, most likely, will become a deathtrap. Staying in the city would be suicide, however, if the Red Cross are sill active in the area, they are our best chance of getting help. Who knows? Maybe we're the only ones affected by this thing, maybe they're airlifting people to safety. Maybe not. We won't know unless we send people in to find out. Curiosity, indeed, killed the cat, but how would we know that if the cat hadn't been curious in the first place?" Jacob finishes his answer with a question, one he was certain would win the general over, if anything could.

Marcus sighed, "there may be a chance that people are being airlifted, heck there may be boats near the sea, whatever the case everything has a risk, but of course since we lost radio contact we won't know anything for certain" he begins to think heavily, "well it is our job to protect the civilians so...fine, me and my men will try our best to protect everyone here, no guaranties that everyone will live" he finally answered.

Jacob looks visibly happier, and possibly a little relieved, at hearing this, "Great! I have no clue when we're setting out, but I'm sure they'll let everyone know. For now, make yourselves comfortable, I guess. That's what I did. Now, I have to go, but if you need anything, just ask. And I'm sure there's someone around with a lot more authority and information; they'll get you set up, just ask around." With that, a nod, and a smile he departs back to the apartments.

Marcus waved goodbye to Jacob as he left, he then went to the rest of the soldiers to tell them what they are going to do, "alright listen up men, our job now is to protect all the civilians here to the best of our effort and hopefully find a evac point so we can get out of here. We leave when the civilians are leaving is that understood?" The soldiers then saluted their general and began to rest or play some cards.
