There was something amiss, Cress was acutely aware as soon as she woke up. Her eyes were bleary, she was confused, her limbs feeling weak. Memories flit through her mind, a car accident, the hospital, recovering, coming home to a new cousin and her Aunt. No, this wasn't Sierra Nevada, that much she could tell. A woman stroked her head, her hair black as night, a scar going down one of her eyes. Xion. It all rushed back to her, Cress attempted to sit up, but hands pushed her back down. "Don't move too quickly," Xion directed. Cress was laying in the softest bed she had ever felt, the down of the covers so hot they almost seemed to smother her. "Aya? Where's Aya?" Cress slurred, looking around the room in confusion. "Aya went home, she had to return to her Father's side." Xion replied, sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Cress lay back against the pillow, pulling the oxygen mask off of her face. "I wouldn't do that," Xion's expression was stern. "Why not?" Cress looked at the drip hanging off of the side of the canopy, going into her arm. "Because the muscle relaxers are still in you, all we've managed to do is dilute them in your blood and keep you breathing. The half life won't happen for another day. Go back to sleep," Cress couldn't sleep though, her nerves were frayed. Xion shook her head, pushing the mask back onto Cress's face forcefully and strapping it behind her ears. "Sleep," Xion said again, turning off the lights. Cress felt inexplicably tired in that moment, she closed her eyes, drifting back off despite the anxiety and panic clawing at her throat, telling her not to.

She awoke two days later, the muscle relaxers having worn off. "I don't know what Heron was thinking," a familiar voice mumbled from somewhere in the room. "Could've killed a horse with that dose," Cress pulled the mask off of her face, feeling smothered. She turned in bed, recognizing the Doctor in training. "Oh good, you're up." He turned to look at her, evaluating her quickly. "You seem much better than before too." Cress sat upright, her head no longer spinning and her limbs back in her control. "What am I doing here? Where's Aya?" Cress asked, unable to recall the last time she had awoken. "Aya is in the Rubble Tier, where she belongs." Corren replied, "she should've never been involved with this mess, that girl." He shook his head and turned back to look at her, holding something in front of her face. "I don't know what that says," Cress replied, still unable to read their language.

"My apologies, I forgot you weren't able to read this." Corren adjusted his glasses and looked down. "While you were asleep, I tested your blood. I used samples of the Queen's blood to test against it. It was a genetic match." Cress stiffened, having a general idea, but not truly knowing what that meant. "What do you mean?" She asked, wanting clarification. "It means-" Corren began, clearing his throat. "That are you more than just cousins with the Princess, Cress, in fact, I suspect... you're twins." The wind was knocked from her lungs, she felt as though the entire room was caving in as darkness overtook her and she passed out from the shock.

❝With the magic of positivity, anything can happen!❞

Pain swelling in her chest, in her legs. Aya was happy though, so it was okay. She sat in her room, the lights turned off, staring at nothing in the darkness. She was happy, but she still needed to sit here and wait. She wanted to be a good girl, after all. "You're taking time off work." Father told her. "So just be a good girl and sit at home." She liked working though, she liked being able to help and be useful. Was there going to be a bruise? The squid didn't know, but it sure hurt to breathe. She sighed, looking at her hand in the dim light. After returning from the Princess's homecoming event at the party she rushed back to her father's side. She knew she didn't have permission to be out so late, and she didn't want him to be mad.

He still was mad though, and when dad was mad it was proof that Aya did something bad. She wanted to be a good, kind, obedient girl, so she knew she needed to be good. Father called in, claiming that she was too sick to work for now so now she wouldn't be able to help with money or anything. Her job was to be punished until Father decided she was good again. She sighed wistfully, then slapped her cheeks. "No! No, be happy." She whispered, psyching herself bacl up. "Smile! All you have to do is smile!" That's right! No matter how much of a bad girl she was, as long as she smiled didn't that make everything better? She would show Father the magic of smiles and positivist once he got back from work too, she would show just how much of a good girl she was.

She loved her father most in the whole wide world, so it was okay. Was it sad that she didn't meet back up at the tunnel to see Crescent Winter again for more adventures? Was it sad that she wouldn't get to keep helping her new best friend? It was okay, she didn't need best friends because Father said so. "You have to be a good girl, Aya." Father told her sternly when he heard about her having a friend. "So you can't go around making new friends." She nodded, that probably made sense. She was a little dumb, so she would trust father's judgment.

There was a creaking at the door. Father looked tired as he returned home from work late at night. "Welcome home!" Aya limped, greeting him with a big wide smile. He nodded, putting his jacket on the hangar. "I'm home." He said, weary after a long day at the factory. Was it working? Was her smile strong enough to melt away the fatigue? He punched her in the stomach, making her fall over onto her face. "I don't know what you're doing, but I hope you're still being good." He glared at her suspiciously. It was hard to breathe and Aya winced, holding her tummy. What was wrong? Was she not smiling hard enough? She decided to smile with all of her strength. "You look strange." He muttered, kicking her in the side. "Just be a good girl, okay? I love you very much, Aya."

"What do we do now?" Corren asked as Cress sat, leg bouncing, unable to sit still. They had given her food and clothing, they were treating her like a Princess, because, well, apparently she was one. Cress didn't believe it though. There was no way she could be royal, she just... she wasn't fit for that. "The blood tests don't lie," Xion replied. "I just don't understand, I know who my Mom is. I know Ellie is my cousin... this... this isn't possible." Cress shook her head. Corren had tested it again just to make sure, but the DNA samples lined up. Genetically, Cress and Ellen were sisters. So why did she have no memories of this place? Why cuold she only recall earth? "This is just a theory of course," Farrel began, fox ears twitching, "But what if you two were twins and... the Queen didn't see a need for a second daughter? We're talking about Queen Narina, so she could've thought that she wouldn't need the spare and sent you to earth?"

"That does sound like our Queen," Xion agreed with a nod. She shook her head, scratching beneath her scar. "Anyhow, there's a favor we need from you Cress. Princess or not, you are a rebel now and we need more information as to what grounds the Queen would send one of her own daughters to earth by." Cress looked up, blinking. Now of all times Xion wanted a favor? "Fine, then I want something in return." Cress decided, two could play at this game. Xion was silent a moment, then nodded. "Alright, what are your terms?" Cress looked hard at Xion and Farrel. "I know you noticed the marks on Aya's wrists and ribs. Someone's hurting her." Farrel blanched, so he had noticed? "And? It's likely she's getting injured in the factories." Cress shook her head, "I don't care. Get her out of there, you've got all this nice wealth and enough food to go around. Bring Aya here, fake her death if you have to."

"Now you're thinking like a rebel!" Farrel howled and Xion smiled a small smile. "Fine, I will observed Aya and if I see fit, I will extract her." Xion decided. "Now," she cleared her throat. "I'm sure you're familiar with the knight named Heron," Cress nodded. "Yeah, she's the one that almost killed me." Xion nodded. "We need you to get close to her, but there's only way to do it." Cress nodded, listening. She swallowed hard, her cheeks turning bright red. Farrel laughed, "don't worry, if she does anything, we've got ways to keep your purity intact." Cress shook her head, "It won't work, she'll see right through me." Corren stepped in then, "We have procedures. I don't know what it's like on Earth, but we can modify you to look different. You'll receive a registration chip as well."

It took a bit of convincing, but after an hour, Cress was laying in that same bed she had made. She closed her eyes, breathing in the gas Corren coaxed into her lungs. When she awoke, she felt strange, unevenly porportioned somehow. "Oh good, you're awake! Look, we're twinsies!" Farrel brought over a mirror to show Cress her new look. She swallowed hard, taking the mirror, her hands shaking, and examining herself. Long white hair, so long it tickled the backs of her knees. Rabbit ears and a tail, her chest even flatter, if that was possible. "This is... me?" She asked to confirm, touching the mirror gently, then her face. Yes, this was her. This was still Cress. "I can do this," she stood, feeling suddenly confident.

"I can't do this." She stood in front of the large gates to Heron's home. Her heart thumping rappidly in her chest. Why was she here? How could she agree to this?

After digging his nails into the skin on her wrists Father decided it was time to go to work. "Be a good girl and stay home. You're still recovering after all." He looked at her carefully, cradling her head in his arms. She trembled, rubbing at her bloody skin, punctured by the dirty nails on his hands. "Y-yes, father." She was a bad girl, she was very bad. "I don't want you to be involved with the resistance anymore. It's a dangerous job, and I want you to stay safe." There was concern and care in his voice as he braided her hair. Aya nodded, smiling brightly. "Of course! I won't put myself in danger and make you sad, father!" Smile as bright as you can, smile as if you were the sun shining light on everyone else. That was all she needed to do.

The door closed. Aya stared at it for a few seconds, nursing her wounds, rubbing at her bruises. Then she remembered that she needed to smile, so she smiled at nothing, bouncing on the balls of her feet. "Okay! Let's make the house nice!" It would never be as nice as the houses on the Blossom or Untouchable Tier but it was okay. If she could at least clean the blood off the floor it would make everything better. Smiling and humming a funny tune, Aya found an old dusty broom in the closet and got to work, sweeping the bristles against the old wood that made up their home. She coughed, limping funny. After the adventure with Cress, her new best friend, father was very unhappy to see her with makeup and nice clothes. "You're a Rubble!" He roared, making sure to teach and discipline her properly. "You have to know your place! Stop getting people's attention and be obedient!"

Ashia Palace was a dangerous place, the squid knew this very much. So she very obviously cowered when someone broke down the front door. "Geez, what a mess of a situation. Never thought I'd end up going to the Rubble Tier." Farrel the fox eared Blossom was looking about, sniffing. "Aya, come out. I know you're here." She continued to cower inside a cupboard, making herself as tiny as possible. She had to be good, she couldn't be a bad girl again. Oh, what was she going to do about the broken door? "Cress is on a dangerous mission, so she needs someone to back her up and be her escape. You're the best one for the job." He grinned, looking about the dirty kitchen. "Weren't you two going to be best of friends?"

Aya was stupid and an idiot and not good at anything but she knew what manipulation was when she saw it. Still, even though she knew that she couldn't just let her friend face danger alone. She would just have to let Father discipline her again later once the adventure was over. She crawled weakly out of the cupboard, her body riddled with injuries, her leg never feeling right again ever since she had been taught not to play with the resistance. [color=#30b818]"O-okay. Aya will be good... so show Aya where to go." Farrel grinned, helping her up to her unsteady feet. "Get your bike. We're gonna get you cleaned up, then go take care of dear Cress." He would wait for her signal with the signal stick, but wouldn't hesitate to break in in an emergency. With Aya's peerless gravity bike skills, it'd be easy getting in and out.

"What's a cute girl like you doing in a place like this?" Heron crooned, she was at the gate, as expected, her shift almost over. Cress blushed, she was supposed to be shy, Xion had coached her for this. "P-please help me!" Cress squeaked. She had a fake limp and was wearing rags. "What is it?" Heron caught her, practically dropping what she had been holding to catch Cress. "M-my Master kicked me out, he said I was useless and I can-can't go back to the Rubble Tier!" She sniffled, fake crying into Heron's shoulder. Despite the falsified story, the tears were real. Heron eased them both down, her expression oddly soft. "Don't worry, I'll take care of you. A pretty girl like you won't have to go back there." Cress's eyes watered once more, she swallowed hard and nodded.

"So soft," Heron murmured, rubbing one of the bunny ears between her fingers. "I'm leaving early!" She swept Cress off of her feet and carried her away, through the gate and to the Untouchable Tier. "So pretty bunny, do you have a name?" Heron teased, Cress acutely aware of her arms wrapped around Heron's neck. A name, she needed to think of a name similar to the outlandish ones they had here. "Kairi," it was close enough to her own name that she wouldn't think twice if she was called by it. "Okay Kairi, I'm Heron." Heron lifted her palm and kissed it, Cress blushing. They reached the Untouchable Tier and went to a large building, clearly apartments. "We'll get you cleaned up, but don't be too loud, we don't want to alert the head of the knights that I've smuggled you in."

Cress nodded, putting a finger to her lips to indicate that she would be quiet. They went through the back, taking an elevator up to the top floor. "I've got the run of this floor, since it's pretty small and I'm pretty sure Itward is paying someone under the table, but we're not on speaking terms right now so I don't know." The lift opened right into the living room. The apartment was large, taking up the space of the entire top floor. "Wow, you've got a huge apartment." Cress admired, it was nicer than the house the rebels had in the Blossom Tier, if that was possible. "Yup and it's all mine, or rather, our's." Heron grinned, placing Cress down on her feet and taking her hand. She led her to a bathroom, possibly the fanciest bathroom that Cress had ever been inside of.

"I'll show you how to use it, I'm gonna grab you a towel and some clothes. Okay?" Cress nodded, watching as Heron showed her the dials for hot and cold, water sprayed from every which way. There was a soap dispenser and shampoo and conditioner that you could add your own scents to. Once that was taken care of, Heron went off and Cress figured she should shower, she wasn't sure how long it had been since she had last bathed, but she suspected she really did smell. She peeled off the ugly dress and stood in the spray, the warmth enveloping her like a hug. There was no door and yet somehow, all of the water stayed within the confines of the strange shower. Cress was rather enthralled by it.

Before she could go and help back up Cress though, Farrel wanted to take care of something of hers first. She was taken back up through the tunnel that lead tot he Blossom Tier where she would have her wounds taken care of. "But Cress." She insisted, making sure to smile even though she wanted nothing to do with the Resistance. Cress was her friend but these people were dangerous. The squid would make sure Cress was okay but then go back to Father where she belonged. "But what? You need to be taken care of first." There was obvious pity in the fox eared man's eyes as he looked at her. Why? They just didn't understand the kind of person Father was, the kind of daughter she was. It was love, they were family, no one else had any right to interfere.

"Well, if you don't wanna stick out like a sore thumb, you need to be better dressed and take a bath." Farrel's tone had a joking manner but even someone stupid and useless like Aya knew that he wasn't joking. This wasn't a negotiation, there was simply no two ways about it. "Okay." She wanted to ride to Cress's rescue and see her favorite fire head girl's smiling face again but that would have to wait. Aya allowed Farrel to lead her back to the resistance base, a simple nondescript building. Xion was already there, her eyepatched face nodding at her in acknowledgment. "Welcome back, little squid." She said, approving. "Cress will be glad to see you safe here with us." Safe? Aya didn't need to be safe, she needed to go and be where Cress was, right now.

"Let's get your injuries taken care of." Farrel pushed her to the side room where Xion moved in, rolls of bandages and ointments in her arms ready to administer. "I'm not as experienced as Corren with these medical materials, but he's busy in the Untouchable Tier right now." Corren wasn't officially with the resistance anyways, he didn't want to rebel, he just wanted to help out those of the Rubble Tier who couldn't help themselves. "Don't take too long." She winced, flinching as the ointment stung and burned on her open wounds, punctured flesh.

Eventually though, it was done. Aya found herself dressed in a green biker jacket and form fitting pants that felt much less comfortable than her baggy rags she liked to wear from the Rubble Tier. She got on her bike and was forced to wear a helmet over her blonde locks. "Here's a map, if you know how to read it." Aya frowned, glaring at Farrel. "I do know! Aine taught me to read!" She stuck her tongue out at Farrel and then revved the engine of her gravity bike. Crescent Winter, her favorite fire head girl, needed to be picked up after all.

Heron waltzed inside mid-shower, delivering a towel and a shirt. "I wasn't sure what your size was, but I grabbed this for now." She averted her eyes, which Cress was rather surprised about. Despite her nuances, Heron really was a knight. Once she was done in the shower, Cress wrapped the towel around herself, finding it to be warm. "Thanks," she murmured, her hair dripping. She wasn't used to such long, heavy, hair. Ever since she was a child, Cress's mother had kept it short to keep it out of the way of getting tangled in tree branches or in the garden. "Want some help?" Heron offered, holding out a hair brush. Cress buttoned up the white shirt she was borrowing for the time being, her rabbit ears soaked. "Sure," Heron pat a seat and Cress sat down, surprised by how gentle the knight was. "Your ears are so soft," Heron pet one, Cress's cheeks turning bright pink as a sensation filled her. She didn't know what it was, but she felt good-almost sleepy.

"Alright Kairi, I guess we should talk about your pay and stuff since you'll be serving me from now on. Let me see your ID chip," Cress nodded, swallowing hard. She rolled up her sleeve, holding out her hand. Heron waved a tablet over it, all of Cress's fake information popping up. "Alright, you're now registered under me. So if anyone gives you any trouble, just send 'em my way and I'll arrest them." She waved a pair of handcuffs around, but Cress had a feeling that Heron had other ideas for them. "I-I don't expect you to pay me!" Cress followed her out of the bathroom, she had been coached on what to say and now, well, she almost fell bad. Then she remembered that this was the same knight that had nearly killed her the other day at the ball and all thoughts of feeling bad were immediately swept from her mind.

"Just letting me stay here and work for you is enough-" Heron pressed a finger against Cress's lips. Why was everything about this knight so frustrating? "Think of it as a stipend, I get to come back to meals and a clean house and you get new clothes and can buy stuff. I've only got one bed for now, but I guess tomorrow I could go buy another one. We'll have to share it for the night." Cress suddenly had the urge to punch her, but had enough smarts to act shy and blush, looking away quickly. "O-okay!" She turned back towards Heron, who was watching her. "Wh-what's wrong?" Cress blinked, her bunny ears standing up. "Nothing," Heron shook her head. "You must be hungry, I've got some food. You'll have to go buy some while I'm at work tomorrow."

Heron placed two bags in what Cress assumed was a microwave. They came out larger and smelling good. Cress's surprise was genuine. "Dinner is served, it's nothing gourmet, but it'll do for now." Cress dug in, the flavor nothing like she had ever tasted. "What is this?" Cress didn't even realize that her tail was wriggling and Heron was watching it with a grin. "It's instant meals, us knights get a ration of them. They're pretty gross if you ask the others, but I think they're good." Cress nodded, she too, thought they were good. "I like it," she sat back in her seat, finishing her food slowly to savor the strange taste she had never had before. "I guess you don't get stuff like this in the rubble tier, just that nutrient paste." Cress nodded, grimacing at the reminder.

Aya was not happy. She did not want to be here. She wanted to get Cress back quickly and then go home to father. She couldn't be away for long or else he would be mad and lonely. Family was supposed to stick together and he was all that she had left. Why were the resistance officers trying so hard to keep her away? "Cress is going to be under cover for a few days, so you have to stay here on the Blossom Tier and wait until she needs your help." Farrel told her, kneeling down to her height. "So just stay patient and remain here." She shook her head, puffing out her cheeks. "While she's here why don't we give her something to do?" Xion suggested with a little grin.

The eyepatched lady had an idea. Aya was not eager to hear what crafty plot she had concocting for the poor squid to have to deal with. "Aya, you went to school before, haven't you? With Aine and Serpina Dorones, they were teaching you?" School? What was she planning? "I have to work, A-Aya doesn't have time for school!" She struggled, trying to escape but she knew she couldn't, not with her leg messed up like this. She had a permanent limp right now, but she didn't care. The limp wasn't going to stop her from rushing over to Cress's side! "Aya needs to go and help Cress!" She didn't want her friend to be undercover all alone. "Let's enroll her in the Camellia Academy." Xion suggested with a knowing nod. "That way Aya can get a little bit of proper socialization for a girl her age."

Farrel put a hand on his chin, seemingly liking that idea. "But she can't go as Aya, she would have to be in disguise." He said, thinking deeply. They were talking over her now, deciding her fate like lofty gods deciding what to do with a piece on the cosmic chess board. "N-no! Aya won't go!" Farrel gave her a lollipop to pacify the blonde squid for now. "Do you have any other names you like? This is the best way you can help Cress right now." He said, taking her by the hand. This was how she could help Cress? By going to school? "This way you'll be in the area to save her if the signal comes." Cress had the stick with her but the stick was useless if they weren't ready to rush to save the day.

"Th-then if it's to help Cress... Aya helps friends." She had an odd feeling she had no choice in the matter one way or another. "You'll need a different name." Farrel repeated himself, looking at her intently. "Do you have any name you want to use?" Name? Was there one? It meant being a bad girl and going against her beloved father's hopes and dreams, but there was a name she hadn't gone by in a very long time. "K-Kohyra." Her voice was thin and weak. "Korhya Filia."

Heron went rather mad ordering clothing from virtual catalogues. Cress watched, rather in awe, that Heron could merely press a button and it was ordered. There was no finnicking with credit cards or calling numbers either. "Wow," Cress breathed quietly, watching from over Heron's shoulder. "There, that should do it. Now you've got some stuff you can wear." Cress nodded, following Heron into the bedroom. "I-I can sleep on the floor!" Cress suggested, fidgeting. She was not comfortable with the idea of sharing the bed with a stranger, especially one that had tried to kill her. "Don't be shy, there's plenty of room for both of us." Heron pat the space beside her, it was true, there was plenty of room. Cress crawled under the covers hesitantly, her bunny ears flopping over her face as she lay down on what was probably the softest bed her body had ever graced.

It was as though she were laying on a cloud, the sheets whisper light and cool to the touch. "Night," Heron flicked off the lights. For a while, Cress simply lay in bed, listening to the sound of Heron breathing. Eventually, she managed to drift off, waking up to the sound of an alarm. "I'm late, I'm late. Crap, the Captain is gonna kill me!" Heron danced around the room, pulling on her pants and buttoning her shirt. "I left a list of stuff that has to be done on the table, okay Kairi? I'll be back around lunch to check on you!" Cress watched her leave and yawned, closing her eyes to catch a few more minutes of sleep. "Bye, have a good day." She whispered, but found herself unable to drift back under. With a sigh, Cress kicked back the covers and rose, finding box upon box stacked in the hallway with Heron's name on it. Could this be the stuff she had ordered last night? Grabbing a knife from the kitchen, Cress tore the first one open.

A maid uniform. Yup, that's exactly the perverted outfit Cress had expected Heron to order. She dragged the boxes in one by one, changing into the uniform to make sure it fit. She hung the rest up in the spare room and glanced at the list Heron had left her. Grocery shopping, okay, Cress could do that. Except, she had no idea where or how those were bought. She swallowed hard, it seemed she would have to venture out, alone, for the first time. "I should take stock first and see what Heron has." She had to earn Heron's trust before she could really begin to ask questions and pry, but for now, Cress would merely dig around the house to see what Heron had.

As it turned out, not much. There was no secret cabinet full of important papers, or a locked briefcase, or anything the spy movies on earth had prepared her for. In fact, Heron's apartment barely seemed stocked with much of anything. "Tchh, that womanizer is more man than woman." She put on a pair of shoes and took her list with her, it seemed it would be up to Cress to figure out how the groceries worked. She took the elevator down to the first floor and left through the back, recalling that she could not read this strange language. Great, it seemed this really would be an adventure.

Somehow Aya found herself enrolled in Camellia Academy, a school for Blossom girls who wanted to receive a good education and live a decent life. There were lots of strange things being taught and Aya was forced against her will to sign up for a series of classes. "I think you could major in Etiquette." Farrel said with a mocking smile. "Want me to input it?" Xion seemed entertained by the idea of Aya majoring in gardening, considering how no plants could grow in the ruined Rubble Tier. In the end they decided to keep her in the general stream, since they wanted her to have a somewhat normal experience without too much worry.

After a fitful sleep and the knowledge that once she returned home Father was going to definitely be very angry, Aya groggily went to school. It was weird being made to sit down and learn things instead of follow orders on a screen and create things with her hands in a factory setting. The teachers kept on talking about things and Aya was made to introduce herself multiple times as a new transfer student in each class. "Hello, I'm Korhya Filia." She recited, going by the script she was given by Farrel. "You can call me Kora for short!" Did she like it? No, she did not. But if this was the only way she could somehow help Cress in the future then she would do as ordered. Dumb resistance, the squid should've known better than to get involved with dangerous folks like this.

Once school ended for the day Aya found herself very bored and upset. She only agreed to go to the Blossom Tier because she was promised Cress but in the end Cress wasn't even here! The blonde squid was lonely. "If I was an eggplant Cress could have my nutrients." Aya said quietly to herself as she found her trusty bike in the yard where students left the building in search of freedom. Would she get to escape this stuffy and dumb school uniform soon? "If I was a tomato, Cress could make me into yummy juice!" She wanted to find her new best friend to reaffirm the friendship. Being needed by Cress felt - it was a strange feeling. She had never ever been needed before. But now she wasn't even needed and Cress was doing a dangerous mission all alone.

Someone nudged her before she could rev the engine of the gravity bike. Aya looked over her shoulder at the mean person who would tap her shoulder like that. How dare they interrupt her thoughts? "Aha, I thought I recognized you. It's been a very long time!" Aya blinked, looking at... herself? It was like looking into a mirror. The same blonde hair, the same green eyes, the same devilish smile. "Aya?" The real Aya Filia, thought dead, grinned with excitement. "Yeah, it's me! And you're Kora, my twin sister! You're so pretty now!" But how was this possible? Wasn't she long dead? Seven years ago Aspen pushed her into the well and Aya was never okay ever since. How was she standing? How was she breathing?

Groceries, groceries, Cress tried to find something that would remotely fit the description. She was walking around blindly, attempting to discern what the strange letters meant. As far as being a maid went, Cress thought she did a decent job. Before leaving the house she had unpacked the boxes, made the bed, swept, and mopped. She had looked in the cupboards and saw that Heron did not keep much, so it seemed she would have to buy everything Heron was missing. A bachlor pad, Cress realized, was the equivalent of what Heron was staying in. "Excuse me," Cress stoped a woman pushing a floating baby carriage. "Yes?" The woman glowered at her and Cress stiffened, hoping that she seemed unassuming. "D-do you know which way the groceries are?"

"That large building with the sign that says "Superstore," Cress nodded, thankful and bustled away. She felt as though she had been scrutinized and was glad that she was disguised. She sighed with relief once she entered, it wasn't a trick that sent her right to the authorities, she was really there. An hour later, she had returned with a floating car that held all of the bags. This place was some sort of strange future of what earth might look like. She needn't scan anything, as soon as she walked out, she simply touched her ID chip against the reader and it simultaneously scanned everything in her cart. Heron would be charged for all of it, of course, since Cress or Kairi was now registered there. Heron was waiting for her when she got back. "Oh, look at all that stuff." Her eyes widened, but she didn't seem worried or surprised.

"Your house was pretty bare, so I thought you could use some things." Cress said, attempting to appear meek. "Including plants?" Cress blanched, she had hardly noticed the flowers she had put into the basket. "I-I thought they were pretty," she looked down, fidgeting. "Well, they are nice, not as nice as you, but they'll do I guess." Heron helped her unpack everything. "You did a good job today, I got out of work early so I figured I would come back, but it turns out I've got a meeting soon." Cress nodded, "I-I can cook something really quick!" She suggested, wondering if Heron had noticed that Cress had gone through all of the drawers. "No, you've done enough today." Heron grinned, "I'd treat you, but I'd say you bought yourself enough treats with those plants." Cress turned bright red again.

She turned towards the plants, already clipping off anything that looked wilted. "So... do you work with the Princess and Queen a lot?" Cress asked, figuring it was an innocent enough question. "Yeah, the Princess and I are good friends. Want me to introduce you?" Heron joked, she was drinking something in a large mug, Cress suspected it must have been the equivalent of this world's coffee. "Really?" She whirled back around, figuring this might be her chance. "You really know the Princess?" Heron didn't seem surprised, as though everyone questioned her legitamecy. "Yeah, I'll prove it to you! Tonight, you and I'll go meet her!"

The last thing Aya saw of her sister - or to be more accurate, the last thing Kora saw of her precious twin sister was that she was dying in her room, bleeding to death due to her wounds from falling into a well thanks to Aspen pushing her in. How could she have possibly survived that? What happened exactly here? Kora needed to know, because nothing made sense, her head was spinning and whirling worse now than it usually did. Aya narrowed her eyes as Kora continued to stare blankly at her. "Come on, what did I teach you?" That's right. Aya told her something that couldn't be forgotten. So she broke into a big side beaming smile and Aya nodded, smiling affirmatively. "Good girl, that's right. You're supposed to always smile.

A bike drove up by them then. A helmet was removed, revealing a white haired boy riding it. "How was your day at school, babe?" He leaned down to kiss Aya, who giggled and accepted it. "It's good. I found someone I thought I'd never see again! Aspen, do you remember her?" Kora's heart beat painfully, as if it was trying to burst out of her ribcage. "Aspen? But didn't you-" A hand was placed over her mouth, silencing her quickly. "It was a real long time." Aspen said, looking at her in surprise. "Hey, get on. I think we should have a bit of a talk." Two people who Kora never thought she would ever see. Aya, her dead twin sister and Aspen, their childhood friend who vanished after having killed her.

A small apartment - bigger than most houses in the Rubble Tier but smaller than the average dwelling in the Blossom Tier - the door opened and Aspen invited them both in. Aya giggled, taking her shoes off as if she owned the place, it was evident she had been here many times before. Kora was stunned, staring at them as if she were looking at zombies. "How?" She asked once the door was closed. "A-and why not me? Why leave me behind?" Because of Aspen their whole family had been ruined and Father broke, turning him into someone different than he had ever been before. The two lovebirds looked at each other and squeezed hands.

"It was a plan. Aspen and I both wanted to escape the Rubble Tier, so we came up with a plan." Aya said with a solemn look on her face. "We wanted to be more than just slaves working away in the factories. So we decided to risk everything on a gamble." They explained it all to her. They faked her death than he ran her to the Blossom Tier in the dead of night after her family gave up hope on her. They could only hope and pray that they could find Serpina Dorones to take them in and give her medical help so that she wouldn't die. "And now we're here." Aspen affirmed. "And you made it here too. We're all back together again."

Aya took Kora's hands in hers. They were once identical but Kora's were rougher and marred with scars while Aya's looked clean and soft. "We couldn't find a chance to bring you with us." Aya's voice was soft. "I'm sorry for leaving you alone for all this time."

Heron had left again, giving Cress time to herself. She arranged the flowers around the windows, hoping that they would get enough light despite the angle. She showered next, figuring she had enough time. Cress felt anxious, but she didn't know what to do with herself. She couldn't exactly explore much considering she couldn't read their langauge and was still curious as to how she understood it. Could she really be Ellie's sister? Was it possible that she had been ejected from this world at birth? Was her Mother really her Mother? Was that horrible woman from the ball her birth Mom? Cress had so many questions and next to no answers. Would she be able to ask them all to Ellie? No, it wasn't likely, not with Heron in the room.

Cress shuffled around for pencil and paper, she needed to write, she had to get a letter in to tell Ellie her discovery. Hopefully she would be able to slyly slip it into her pocket. Hopefully Ellie would recognize her and wouldn't feel odd that some stranger wanted to meet her. With a sigh of relief she sat down, clicking the pen and hoping it wasn't some new fangled tech they used up here. She touched it against the paper briefly to test it, but it wrote normally. Dear Ellie, Cress started, thinking to herself.

I tried to talk to you at the party, but you didn't seem very receptive, so I'm gonna try this instead, which you can read in the privacy of your own castle. Today is Tuesday, I think, it was a Sunday when I left earth and I don't know if they even have the same name for days here, but anyway, I've come across a very important discovery. When I was with the rebellion, which is a story for later, they tested my blood. They found a genetic match with a certain strain of DNA, your strain. Ellie, we're not cousins, we're sisters. I don't know how this is possible or if this is even right, but I need you to know. I don't know what to do. I feel lost, this place is so strange. I want to go home Ellie, with you. Our real home, not this strange place.

-Cress

She sealed the letter carefully and placed it in her pocket, Heron would be back soon. She erased any signs of her writing and replaced the pencil and paper. She may as well make dinner while she waited and so Cress set the table and went about making one of the meals her Mother had taught her to make, fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Comfort food, for when you felt down. The door opened and shut, "Kairi, I'm back!" Heron bound inside, seeming excited. "I've got good news, the Princess is gonna come here. We won't even have to go to the castle to see her." Cress turned, holding the wooden spoon with mashed potatoes on the end. "Really!" Her excitement was not feigned, she couldn't wait to see her cousin again.

On the morning of the day Princess Narisia was finally able to find a day where she could go and visit Cress, taking Shiro with her of cours,e it had been a few days since the letter was sent out. Kora had been spending her time pretending to be a Blossom-born and spending time with her long lost twin sister and her lover, Aspen Heterach. It was an odd time, almost like a fairytale. Learning alongside her sister, and then going out on adventures, exploring the beautiful and wondrous sights waiting for her throughout the Blossom Tier was something she didn't quite understand, but didn't want to jeopardize nonetheless. "Wake up, sleepyhead." Aya snickered, pulling Kora out of bed. "C'mon! It's the weekend!" At the end of the week there was one day where they were given a day off to enjoy free time and catch up on homework they were behind on.

"O-okay. What are we going to do?" Aya and Aspen were always going so fast all around Kora had trouble keeping up. She knew she was stupid though, a squid like her wasn't the same as these two humans. Most of the time she was just being pulled along at their pace, trying to get used to everything. "We're going to the Silver Plateau today." Aya explained with a knowing smile. "It's near the top of the Blossom Tier, and we'll get a great view of Lake Asphodel from there. Come on, let's go!" Outside the dorm that the twins now shared - Xion gave permission as her current "guardian" Aspen was waiting, his gravity bike ready. "Come on girls." He said, revving the engine. "We don't have all time to dawdle now."

She barely had had time to get dressed in common clothes and eat the teeth cleaning paste before she was put on the bike and they were flying through the air. "This is going to be so much fun! We're going to take a bike ride over Lake Asphodel!" Aya exclaimed, raising her hands up in excitement. "Slow down, Aya, you're overwhelming her." Aspen almost sounded gentle. "It's hard for a Rubble to adjust to all of this, isn't it?" Still, doubt lingered in Kora's chest. She needed to be ready to help her New Best Friend, Cress. Though was it bad that sometimes she hardly thought about her because she was busy having knowledge and learning shoved into her tiny brain?

She was an awful friend. While Cress was working hard for the Resistance Kora was playing around with her sister.

Before they could go out over the Silver Pavillion and glide over Lake Asphodel's glistening waters, there was a squadron of Knights standing there, waiting for them. "Aya Filia." The one at the center read from a page. "You're under arrest for impersonating Aine Dorones and infiltrating a party at Ashia Palace." Kora gulped, panic in her eyes as she saw Itward Cherubim approaching, the holopage in his hands. "Come quietly and you won't get hurt." Aya looked confused, tilting her head. "I wasn't at the party. I was at school, you can even ask my teachers. I didn't leave the dorm." There was annoyance on Itward's face as the knights closed in, their spears glowing.

"I-It was me! I did it!" Kora had finally gotten her sister back. She wasn't going to lose her again. "I'm the one who did it!" She didn't have the emergency smoke stick on her, she hadn't had time to get it. "She has the rights to a lawyer." Aspen said quickly as the knights clasped Kora in cuffs. "This is a violation of-" Itward snapped his fingers and the Knights hit him on the head, knocking him to the ground. "This is a matter of public security. There are exceptions." He said gruffly. Aya's eyes were wide as she looked back and forth. "H-hey! This isn't right! What do you think you're-"

Kora smiled, because she knew that as long as she smiled everything would be okay. "I'll be fine! I'm smiling!" She said with a big beaming smile. Aya stared at her sister as if realizing for the first time how damaged her sister's mental state was, how fragile it was.

"Hey, wake up." Heron was shaking her, Cress pried one eye open, then the other. She felt woozy, her stomach sick. Why was her head throbbing so much? Wait, where were her pajamas? Why was she in Heron's bed when she had her own room now? Cress bolted upright, awareness but no memories of how she ended up here. "I guess you were a light weight after all, it's almost noon." Noon? Cress glanced at the clock on the mantle, it was 11:50. "Lightweight?" Cress winced, the light too harsh for her eyes. Heron held up an empty bottle, was that... liquor? Cress blanched, she was underage. How did she get a hold of that? It all came rushing back to her. Dinner, she had made Heron dinner and Heron had opened the bottle, offered her a glass. Cress had taken a sip to be polite and then another and then-oh gosh-the whole bottle was empty.

"Anyway Cress I think we have a lot to talk about."

"So you're really a Princess?" Heron asked ten minutes later. Cress was sitting on the counter while Heron fried eggs in a pen, her hair in a messy bun and wearing one of Heron's shirts. "Yeah, at least, I think so. That's what the blood test said." Heron flipped the egg, the butter sizzling in the pan. "I mean, it almost makes sense if you think about it. Narina is the kind of Queen that doesn't see a need for extras, so she... sent you off. Probably didn't expect you to survive." She slid the eggs onto two plates, handing one to Cress, who picked up a fork. Heron leaned against the opposite counter, the two eating in silence for a few minutes. "So why a bunny?" She asked eventually, breaking the silence.

"I didn't get to pick, I just woke up like this." Cress was careful not to mention any names, Heron was a knight after all. "So why didn't you tell Princess Narisia? Or Queen Narina?" After all, Cress had seen her only last week. Today was a day off, since it was the weekend. "I couldn't, not with... you know." Cress groaned, "This is all just a big mistake. I shouldn't have sought you out." She placed her egg to the side, barely touched. "You should eat, you're gonna get hungry later." Heron nudged the plate back towards her and Cress picked it up again. "Does the Princess know?" Cress nodded. "I told her, well, I wrote a letter to her and hopefully she got it and didn't just throw it out." She swung her legs, feeling anxious.

"I'm sure she read it, Nee isn't that kind of person. I'm not on speaking terms with my brother, but he's closer to her than I am." Cress thought she was close to Ellie, turns out, she barely knew her. "Well, today is a day off. So we have time to figure it out and oh gosh, this makes me the asshole knight that slept with the Princess." Cress's cheeks turned vibrant red. "Pass me that bottle-" Heron laughed. "No, getting drunk isn't the answer. Come on, let's get dressed. I've got the day off so we can at least go get some shopping done." Cress nodded, sliding off the counter. "Hey, how old are you, really?" Heron suddenly asked, as though the thought just occured to her.

"Sixteen."

"So I'm an asshole and a pedo!?"

The little squid blinked, confused. What was she doing? She could hardly remember. She had been taken in, arrested by the Knights for impersonating Aine Dorones at the homecoming, and infiltrating the party. Itward Cherubim took her in, his grip hard, her wrists cuffed inside the fancy locks. "You're coming with us. I suggest you behave and don't act up." He told her as she was put into the carriage taking her to the Untouchable Tier. It looked so artificial and fake, as much as it was pretty Aya simply couldn't enjoy the view. Her mind had wandered in that carriage, thinking back to her sister and her lover. Aspen and the real Aya were trying to save her, but in the end Kora knew that there was no saving her. This was just karma for believing she could be like her wonderful and amazing sister.

Itward had taken her into a different place. She wasn't brought to the Palace to face the Queen, nor was she made to plead for representation as she was dragged off to the Knight Station. Instead she was taken to a large impressive building, with intimidating statues guarding both sides of the main entrance. "Welcome to the Cherubim household." Itward said simply. "I've already tried you as guilty, so you'll be coming with me." The other knights left then, leaving her alone with Itward. A strange mute girl who Aya could vaguely remember as Nio was looking at her, staring from the upper stairwell. She dashed off, hiding away into her room. Aya decided to smile because smiling made everything better. As long as she smiled, she would be okay. "Come on, stop dawdling." He pulled her harder.

Aya didn't really remember what happened next. All she knew was that she was put into a strange place. Where was it? There was no natural light? All Aya knew was that she couldn't quite move. It was dark, she couldn't see. It must be a small enclosed area since the air felt stuffy and dull to her already poor lungs thanks to living in the Rubble Tier. How long has it been? The squid had no idea. Still, eventually, the door did open, revealing a chamber that looked almost medical in nature. Itward Cherubim pulled her out, dragging her by the wrist. There was a dark look in his eyes.

"Why... am I..." Itward didn't answer, but his grip tightened as she was pulled out of the strange small cell. "You're clearly working in concert with the resistance." He said, his red hair crimson in the artificial light. "For the safety of this nation, I'm going to find out everything I know." So this was an interrogation? "How did you get in? Who helped you?" If she said anything, Cress would be in danger. So Aya kept her lips shut as she smiled reflexively. "Stop smiling." Itward shook his head. "I'll have to use force then." He grabbed her wrists and wrenched them upwards, connecting them to a wire above their heads. "You asked for this, so don't blame me." He growled, pressing a button as mechanical whirring began.

"Where are we going?" Cress asked as they rode a train that seemed to hover in the sky. It moved fast and in the blink of an eye, the train was at its next stop. "Three stops," Heron replied cryptically, standing beside her. Cress swallowed hard, she needed to contact Xion, but she couldn't with Heron beside her. She was supposed to check in, but didn't want to tell Xion that she had messed up, gotten drunk, and might have told Heron everything. Thankfully, it seemed that Heron did not know she was that Cress, the one that had attended the ball that night in connection with the rebels. Cress waited anxiously, wondering if Heron was taking her right to jail, or worse, to the Queen. No one stared at them, as though it were completely normal for an off-duty night and a bunny girl to be taking the train on a Saturday afternoon.

The third stop came at last, Heron took Cress by the elbow, guiding her off of the train. "Mind the gap," Cress jumped over it, her nerves frayed. "Now will you tell me where you're taking me?" Cress inquired, stressed and anxious. "We're almost there," Heron promised. They stopped in front of a large building, plenty of other people frequenting the area. Heron led the way, directing Cress to the back of the building. "What is this place?" There were families and couples muking about, doing whatever it was the people here did on a Saturday. "You're about to find out, here, put these shoes on." Heron handed her a pair, Cress changed out of her boots and into the strange shoes, putting on the gloves as well. "This way," Heron opened the door and push Cress inside, almost instantly, she began to float. "Wh-what is this!" She screamed as she drifted towards the ceiling. Heron bounced off of the wall easily, grabbing Cress by the waist and pulling her back down.

"It's a zero gravity room! I rented it out so we can talk." Cress blinked, talk? She began drifting up towards the ceiling again and tried to right herself, wondering how Heron had such an easy time with it. "What do you mean talk? What's there to talk about?" Cress bounced off of the ceiling, heading back down. How could she direct herself? "Use the gloves," Heron said and Cress did, finding that she could control the direction she drifted in. "There's a lot to talk about, like how you can't work for me anymore." Cress blanched, "Wh-what am I gonna do?" If her mission was a failure, the rebels wouldn't save Aya. "Well, I can't exactly have a Princess working for me, you know? It's clear we can't go to the Queen either, but I'm a knight, so it's my duty to report these sorts of things."

"She'll kill me, she already tried to when I was a baby. Who knows what she'll do when she finds out I'm still alive?!" Heron grabbed her midair, the two of them spinning. "Calm down, I'm not going to take you to the Queen." She couldn't take her to Itward either, because he was a loyal dog to Princess Narisia. "Then what are you gonna do?" Heron bit down on her lip in thought. "I don't know, but I'll think of something. Corren maybe, or-or one of the others. Maybe the Prince of Tartarus, he isn't exactly an ally of Ashia, but I'm sure he wouldn't turn us away." Us? Cress blinked. "I mean, you." Heron blushed, looking away and Cress blushed as well, acutely aware of the fact that she could hardly remember losing her V-card.

❝With the magic of positivity, anything can happen!❞

With her arms up locked in the air above her head to the wire running through the room Aya wasn't sure what to think. Itward Cheribum was looking at her. He wanted information, he wanted to know who the rebels were, he wanted her to betray everyone. If it was only Xion, if it was only Farrel and everyone else she wouldn't have cared. She would have happily given up the information because the truth was that Aya wasn't the kind of person that cared all that much about the fate of Ashia. She just wanted to live out her normal mundane life as a normal girl, smiling all the way just like her sister taught her. But now she was here in a dungeon, and she didn't want to sell out the only person who truly wanted to be her friend. She didn't want to sell out Cress.

"So you're not going to tell me?" Itward shook his head ruefully. "Then I guess you know what's about to happen. Don't blame me, you chose this of your own free will." He pressed a button and two arms reached up beside her. Aya blinked, staring at the arms in confusion. What were they going to do? She was a little bit afraid, but then the arms reached her sides, rubbing against them. What was this? It just felt weird, she didn't even laugh or anything. "Oh, you're not ticklish?" He sighed, looking at her. Tickling? This was what that was? Her sister, the real Aya, was quite ticklish but Kora wasn't at all in the slightest. "Alright, I guess I'll have to do this the hard way then." He pressed the button again and the tickle arms went back down into the floor.

Then he pulled down the raggy pants from around her bony emaciated hips, the bones jutting out, jagged and not pretty at all. Fear thumped painfully in her heart as she writhed, not liking being exposed like this. He didn't seem to show any particular interest however. She decided to smile. As long as she smiled everything would be okay. "Why are you smiling?" Itward asked, looking at her funny. "So it'll be okay." She explained. Why didn't anyone understand this? Smiling was good. No matter how bad it got, by smiling and being positive, anything can happen! That's what she always believed and in a time like this, she would cling to that belief even harder.

Something sharp and painful entered her from beneath. She barely even knew she had an opening down there for something to be put in. Blood dripped down onto the chromatic metal floor and then she began to twitch and scream as the sound began, the drilling. He watched her with stony hard eyes as she twitched, as her vision flashed, as her legs danced and her toes curled. Was he doing something bad to her? Was he going to turn her into furniture? Her vision faded and she could no longer see and she went limp on the drill spike.

Her vision blanked back into existence thanks to an injection digging into her thigh. It was still going on, her body was still being destroyed. "Who are the rebels?" He asked, glaring at her. She didn't know, she couldn't even think anymore let alone answer any questions. All she knew was that even as she screamed, she did her best to smile.

"I don't think the ice cream is gonna solve this." They were at a cafe now, sharing an ice cream sundae despite Cress insisting that she wasn't all that hungry. "Wait a second... is this a date?" She asked, rising to her feet. "Did you just notice?" Heron asked, seeming surprised. Cress's cheeks turned bright red for the fifth time that day and it wasn't even four. "We, you know, it's only proper so your Mom doesn't think I'm a complete skirt chaser." Cress didn't know what to think, her bunny ears were twitching with mild annoyance. "Eat some, or I'm gonna take all the whipped cream." Cress sighed and picked up her spoon, her thoughts drifting to Aya. Was she safe? Had Xion extracted her like she promised? Cress hoped so. "What are you thinking about?" Heron asked, curious. "My Rubble friend, but I don't know what happened to her."

"What's her name?" Cress shook her head, if she said that much, it would be obvious who she was. "I don't know, she helped me when I came to earth, but I never learned her name." An easy enough lie, although she felt guilty about it. She ate the whipped cream off of her side of the ice cream so Heron couldn't have any. "What are we doing next?" Cress inquired, since apparently she was now on a date. "I was thinking we could go to Lake Asphodel and then we'll grab some dinner somewhere." Heron rose, holding out a hand. Cress ignored the hand and followed her, the two of them taking the train again. "You remind me of someone." Heron drummed a finger against her chin as they stood on the platform. "But I don't know who," she looked past her, her eyes widening.

"Shit, not here. This is the last place I expected them to be." Who? Cress tried to look, but Heron blocked her path. "Come on, we're going this way." She grabbed Cress's wrist, dragging her through the crowd. "Heron, what are you doing? Who's following us?" Cress asked, wondering if she should be worried. "Rebels, they're tailing us. The Cherubims are known for their red hair," Cress didn't have the heart to tell Heron that they were probably assigned to keep an eye on Cress and not after them, but she also had the sense to keep her mouth shut. "What are we gonna do??" Cress asked instead. "Take a different train," one stopped on the platform, it was near silent, if not for the ding that meant it had arrived.

They stepped inside, Heron tugging on Cress, her hand on Cress's waist. Almost immediately, they were surrounded, the rebels holding them at gun point. "Heron Cherubim, don't make a fuss. You're coming with us," Heron's free hand flit to her side, but someone had already grabbed her rapier. Cress's hands balled into fists, it seemed that the jig was up. "Cress, they took Aya." Farren said, pushing his way to the front. "What do you mean? Who took Aya?" Cress asked quietly as Heron was pat down, her weapons confiscated. "Itward Cherubim, Heron's brother."

Aya was curled up on the ground, whimpering and shaking. "Stop fighting it." Itward Cherubim muttered, holding the cauterizing stick in his hands. "You're bleeding out, you're going to die if this keeps up." She could barely move, but still, she didn't want him to do anything to her anymore. Without the strength to smile, she no longer believed that everything would be okay. Try as she might, the little squid didn't have what it took to keep on smiling. The stupid little squid didn't know how to do it. Her sister always told her to smile no matter what happened, but in the end she couldn't even do that. How pathetic, was she. Since she couldn't keep on smiling, she was no longer promised a life of happiness and joy. Because she couldn't keep on smiling, it was all over now.

She screamed as the heat burned at her insides, stopping the flow of blood. "If you'd just tell me what I needed to know, this wouldn't have happened." He shook his head, looking at her as if she were an alien. Was this what it meant to be an Untouchable? Did all Untouchables do this? Aya didn't know, she didn't know anything. How could a stupid girl - was she a girl anymore? Her special thing down there was destroyed, was there anything she could do that was girly anymore? The squid whimpered and shivered, remaining a useless heap on the bloody ground. She heard a sigh of annoyance and then Itward Cherubim disappeared up the stairs. Aya sniffled, not knowing how to move. Was it possible for squid furniture to move? The stupid girl didn't know, but she would remain like this forever probably.

There was a creak. The door opened, but the footsteps were different. They were most definitely lighter, not like Itward's deliberate and slow steps that clearly indicated his presence. Still, Aya tensed, her blonde hair like a carpet of yellow on the floor, spreading all out from her head, some strands soaked in the red blood puddle that was her new bed. A tuft of red hair, bright yet grim eyes, and a voiceless gasp greeted her. Aya had been forced to recognize this girl's face. It was Nio Cherubim, the youngest daughter of the Cherubim family. She pulled out some strange white gel and began working, rubbing it on the hurt spot. Aya twitched, sliding away from her. What was that? What was that? She didn't want that.

Nio pulled at her collar then, the choker pulling away from her throat to reveal a series of harsh painful scars lining her throat. She opened her mouth and tried to speak but no sound came out. Was - could it be? Was Nio another of Itward's victims? His own sisters? But family was supposed to love each other, but what kind of family did this? Nio's gentle hands, her delicate touch allowed Aya to feel a bit of relief and the worst parts of the pain faded away into nothingness. Nio helped clean Aya up with a wet sponge, dutifully scrubbing away at the blood.

"Here's the plan," Xion began. Heron and Cress were both tied to chairs in the rebel base. They had to keep up the charade, of course, that Cress was not part of the rebellion and simply a girl working for Heron. They didn't know, of course, that Cress had told Heron in a drunken stupor what her true identity was. "Why should I do anything for you?" Heron growled, clearly unhappy about being taken. Cress acted meek and scared the way she was supposed to, Farren having tied her bunny ears together with a scrunchy. "Because this is an innocent girl that was taken by your brother," Xion slammed her fist against the wall, making Cress jump. She straightened, fixing her eye patch and clearing her throat. "As I was saying, here's the plan. Heron, you're going to distract your brother. You'll take your servant- what's her name?"

"Kairi," Cress supplied in a meek tone. "You'll take your servant Kairi and Farren, who will act as your other servant. You and Kairi will serve as a distraction while Farren extracts Aya. Once Aya is secure, Farren will give you the signal and you can leave as though nothing happened." Heron grit her jaw, struggling against the zip ties that bound her to the chair. Cress didn't struggle, Farren had barely even tied her down. "And why should I help you? What's in it for me?" Heron asked, her leg bouncing. "You get to join the rebellion and go against your brother and we'll let you keep your little bunny slave instead of freeing her." Xion grabbed Cress by the rabbit-ears, the pain in Cress's expression very real. "Too hard," Farren whispered in Xion's ear, but she didn't let up. They had an act to keep up, of course.

Heron's mouth drew into a tight line. Her eyes met Cress's, a supposed innocent bystander to all of this. "Fine," Heron sighed, it seemed she had no other choice. "We'll do it, but after that, you'll leave my servant and I alone. If you try something again, I'll be delivering your heads to the Queen myself." Xion released Cress's ears, which flopped over almost immediately. The tears of relief in the corners of Cress's eyes were very real. "We leave in an hour," Xion made her exit. Farren was nice enough to release them from the chairs, locking the doors behind him. It seemed until it was time, they would be stuck in this room. "Heron, we can... escape through the window? You don't have to do this." Cress made a lame attempt to open the window, which was, predictably, locked. "No, I do have to. My brother's kidnapped an innocent girl who was forced to play Untouchable by these rebels. I've gotta go set him straight." Heron grabbed Cress's hand, drawing Cress into her arms. "I'm not gonna let them hurt you."

The guilt Cress felt was real. She was using Heron just as much as everyone else here. She shouldn't feel like this, Heron nearly killed her, so why did Cress feel a pang in her chest? The hour seemed to pass far too quickly. Farren opened the doors when it was time to go and led them to an unmarked van. "Ready?" He asked and before they could answer, it shot off down the road. "Itward and I aren't technically on speaking terms," Heron muttered, clearly frustrated by all of this. "Maybe Nio'll open the door so I don't have to talk to him." Cress touched Heron's shoulder. "We can do this," she tried to smile reassuringly, but the risk of being caught was great.

It was the middle of the night when Itward Cherubim came back down. Aya was still laying down in a heap, she didn't want to move but at least she wasn't covered in her own blood anymore. She was horribly hungry, and desperately needed to pee, but right now she didn't have the strength to take care of any of that. "You're being overdramatic." Itward said simply, picking her up as if she were a sack of potatoes. "All you had to do was tell me what I needed to know. Don't you know how dangerous the rebels are?" Right now the most dangerous thing to Aya was this devil with red hair and cruel eyes. Were the rebels dangerous? Yes, and Aya wanted nothing to do with them. But Itward actually hurt her while all the rebels did was call her a squid and boss her around.

"A lady shouldn't be laying around with her bottom half exposed like that." He said and Aya couldn't help but laugh weakly, her emaciated body trembling as he sat her down. "I'm guessing Nio came down to take care of you?" She didn't want to sell Nio out but it was pretty obvious Aya was in no state to take care of herself. "Am I still...?" She wasn't a girl anymore, not after what happened. She didn't know what she was now. A squid was probably the best way to describe the blonde twin. "Look, I don't like doing stuff like this, okay?" Itward sighed, helping Aya into better clothes, though she didn't do much in terms of helping. "But just be glad it wasn't the Queen who found you. You'd never see the light of day again." Was it worse than this? That was hard to believe.

But she couldn't tell him about Cress. If she did, who knows what sort of horrible things would happen to her best friend? What did Cress's voice sound like again? All Aya could really remember was the head of fiery hair so bright it was almost like the shining of the sun overhead. There was a sound then. "Someone's here. I'll go tend to it then." He went upstairs, leaving Aya on a sofa in the basement. She shivered, closing her eyes. What was happening now? The squid really didn't want to know. Lighter footsteps came then and who else but little Nio, with a few steaming hot honey buns in her hands. She did a silent smile and handed one to Aya, an insistent look on her tiny face.

"I don't..." Nio shook her head and shoved it into Aya's mouth as she tried to talk. It tasted sweet, it was warm, it was nothing like the plastic nutrient paste she was used to consuming. Real food was an oddity to Aya and it still hurt her stomach to try to take it in. It wasn't the best at breaking down anything that wasn't the plasticy nutrient paste she always ate. Nio was smiling happily as she ate her own honey bun, it was a shame she shared the same hair as her awful brother.

They stopped a block away from Itward's home. The three of them exited the vehicle, Farrel fixing his ears in the reflection of a window before Heron ushered them along towards a large house with an even larger gate. "Welcome to the Cherubim estate," she grumbled. It was nearly midnight now, the perfect time for a home visit, apparently. Heron had work tomorrow and Cress, well, she would just be waiting in Heron's apartment, so it wasn't like it mattered. Heron pushed a button on the gate, crossing her arms. "Itward? It's me! It's Heron, let me in!" She spoke into an invisible camera. "Can't believe I'm doing this." She muttered, grasping Cress by the hip, almost as though it were a reflex. Farrel didn't seem nervous in the least, unlike Cress and Heron, especially Heron.

The gate opened, the three of them walking inside. The door opened as though someone were waiting for them, but there was no one there. It was creepy, almost. "This way," Heron led the way. Itward was waiting for them in in what Cress assumed was a parlor or drawing room. Before he could catch sight of him, Farrel slunk away, going to find out where Aya was being hidden and hopefully rescue her. "I thought you weren't speaking to me?" Itward asked casually, inspecting his nails. Heron crossed through the threshold, Itward's eyes flickering upwards. They went immediately to Cress, whom Heron was attempting to obscure behind her. "What's that? A new girl toy for you to play with?" Cress's cheeks heated up immediately, her rabbit ears twitching.

"That's why I'm here." Heron said softly, taking a seat on the opposite end of the room. She grabbed Cress's wrist, pulling her onto her lap. "Itward, there are rebels listening." Heron of course, worked for the Queen. To betray the rebels meant ensuring her future and good standing as a knight, but she wasn't going to let an innocent girl continue to be tortured. "Heron, what are you doing?" Cress whispered, Heron's grip tightening around her. "This girl is related to the Princess, I rescued her from the rebels. They followed us here, I'm sure they're listening right now." She was going off script, she was going rogue. What was Heron thinking? Itward leaned forward. "Ridiculous, the Princess does-"

"It's true," Cress cut him off. "E-Princess Narisia and I are sisters." Itward was silent for a moment. "How can this be? The Queen nor Princess ever made mention of another heir." They needed to abort the mission, Heron had spilled too much and yet-this was Cress's best chance of getting close to Ellie. "You can test my blood," Cress held out her arm. "If you truly are related to the Princess, you can't stay with my womanizer of a sister. You'll stay here, I'll appoint a room for you and-"

"No, I'd rather stay with Heron." Cress... trusted Heron more than she did Itward. She knew that Heron wouldn't purposely hurt her, she wasn't so sure about this redhead. "Nio!" Itward called outside the room, "grab me the blood kit!" He closed the door behind him. "How is Nio?" Heron asked softly, Itward sat back down. "She doesn't want to see you," he replied stiffly. Heron grit her jaw, her teeth grinding together. "I understand," Heron replied reluctantly. Itward rose when someone knocked, obscuring Cress and Heron's view. "Hold out your arm," Cress did as told, the cold wipe against her forearm making her slightly nauseous. The needle was different, it was more of a suction cup than anything. She watched as he tapped it against the vein, the suction pulling blood up almost immediately. There was no pain, none of the inconviences of earth.

"How are you gonna test it?" Heron asked, wondering if Itward had the Princess's DNA stored somewhere, which wouldn't surprise her. "Computers Heron, they do all of the leg work these days. Honestly," he shook his head, turning to the large computer that Cress had just noticed. He placed the vial into a slot, the computer reading her DNA. Cress watched, slightly entranced.

Only one match came up, Princess Narisia.

"Impossible, the DNA is near identical."

Nio shook her head as Aya coughed, unable to fully ingest the honey buns as she was expected to. The little redhaired mute gaped, fishing around her bag for something else instead. It seemed there was more food available inside of it, Aya could smell it from here. She still wasn't used to the idea of food having a smell. Really, food wasn't supposed to smell, because nutrient paste was both tasteless and scent free. They made it that way just in case there were any Rubbles born with chemical insensitivities that couldn't handle it. A bar of some sort was pulled out and Nio carefully unwrapped the colorful wrapper. It was made of some sort of butter and cream, and even that smelled good. Nio gave a smile and handed it over to Aya, who wasn't sure what to do with it.

Was it really okay for a piece of furniture to eat? A little useless broken squid like her? She didn't even know how to smile, let alone do anything else. Nio smiled and took another one out, unwrapping it and biting into it, chewing. Aya did the same, though with a bit more hesitance as she did so. She chewed, flavor exploding in her mouth. Nio nodded, patting her tummy enthusiastically. Aya blinked, deciding to pat hers as well. She didn't quite understand the purpose of doing so, but she did so regardless. Suddenly there was a yell from upstairs, sudden enough that Nio jumped up in shock. She did a little gesture of apology with her hands and scurried up the stairs like a frightened rat. Itward called for her, so now Aya would have to be alone again down here. Little Nio made sure to fasten the choker to hide the scars first of course.

What was happening up there? Aya didn't know. Was Itward having her be transferred to the Queen? If Itward did this much pain and damage to her, wouldn't the Queen be even worse? She didn't want that, she didn't want to be hurt anymore. She just wanted to go back to her Father and smile all the pain away. She sniffled, rubbing at her eyes. Would she ever get to see the real Aya again? Kora sure hoped so. It was almost like a dream seeing her the first time, but did dreams exist? Were Rubbles allowed to dream? Blossoms and Untouchables would say no, they always stamped on the dreams of poor Rubbles.

She really needed to pee. Aya decided to try and stand up, but the sudden movement made her head spin and her legs wobbly so she fell towards the wall to catch up, trying to hold herself up by leaning against it. Was there a bathroom around here? Aya hobbled around at the speed of an elderly person until she found another room in the basement. It was strange, shiny with something that looked like a fancier version of the toilets Aya was used to back home. She slid her pants down and sat on the seat, whimpering. It burned, it stung, it hurt to try and let out the pee. Why did it hurt? She whimpered and sobbed, trying to force it all out but it just hurt so much.

"I've located Aya, I'm moving to extract her now." Farrel's voice crackled in Cress's ear. It was a relief to hear that they had found her and were taking her to somewhere safe. "Heron, she should stay here. I know you, you're going to prey on her." Itward and Heron were arguing while Cress sat on the couch, the two siblings standing across from one another, in the middle of a shouting match while Cress awkwardly watched. "I would feel more comfortable returning with Heron." Cress piped up, but she was barely heard. It seemed it mattered not what she wanted, despite being the one whose future was at stake. Cress rose, she was tired of playing the meek rabbit. Cress was better than that. She cleared her throat, both of them stopping long enough to stare at her.

"I said I want to return with Heron." Cress placed her hands on her hips, "I don't care about what happens next, but I want to stay with Heron. I feel safer with her," Heron sidled up behind her, a sly smile on her lips. She wrapped an arm around Cress's waist, her expression one of keen satisfaction. It was clear that for once, someone was on Heron's side and not Itward's. "Then you'll both stay here," Itward said suddenly, but Heron shook her head. "It's too far out of the way, I've got work in the morning. Look, I only came here to ask for your help, I don't need your protection." Itward was grinding his teeth at this point. "You said the rebels were after you, of course you need my protection! There's nowhere safer than our house!"

"Yeah, but I don't want to be here." Heron crossed her arms, releasing Cress from her grasp. Itward ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "Fine," he said at last. "Fine, go back to your apartment. I'll come in the morning to pick Kairi up. You'll go straight to the Queen," Cress crossed her arms. "Isn't she the one that got rid of me in the first place?" Heron and Itward both looked at her. "We don't know that," Itward said after an awkard lapse of silence. "I don't think we should take her to the Queen," Heron agreed, her arm was around Cress's waist again, almost as though it fell there instinctively. "What about the Princess?" Itward inquired, taking a seat once more. It was past midnight now, they were all tired.

"I'm fine with meeting the Princess," Cress replied a bit too quickly. "Of course, she's your sister. I'm sure you're eager to reunite with her." Heron pulled Cress onto her lap on the couch again. "I'm just afraid that she's not who I think she is." Cress admitted, but they did not know what she meant by that of course. "I'm going to have my driver take you home." Itward pulled out what looked like a piece of glass, the screen illuminating, images projected above it. Cress had never seen anything like it before. "I don't want you taking the train this late. I'll be at your apartment in the morning, if Kairi is who she says she is, she needs to be coached. You don't just declare yourself a Princess and have the mannerisms of a rubble."
