HEIGHT
      Short and delicate.

WEIGHT
Perhaps a strong wind could knock her over.

HAIR COLOR
As dark as the night she lives in.

EYE COLOR
      A brilliant sea of blue.

SKIN TONE
      Light and clear, like vanilla.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
Oh, Yue, so many things and yet not enough words to describe her. She is both small and frail, weak and pitiful, yet her eyes can smolder with enough hate to reduce the world to ashes. Her dark hair is usually worn long and and in ringlets, and she enjoys sweaters and hoodies and often wears the color blue. Yue had always been a weak weedy sort, easy to step on and forget, and her habit of silently taking it doesn't help. A pathetic little girl, most people would see her then forget as their minds go to the next thing in their lives that they have to waste time thinking about. An unremarkable sad girl, only spectacular for the hate she hides in her heart.

PERSONALITY
A neglected child? An abused child? A betrayed child? Yue was all three put together in one sad tiny little package, incapable of anything but welling in her own powerlessness. You can step on her and she'll silently accept the punishment. You can break her fingers and she'll shut her eyes and pretend it didn't happen. You can leave her locked in a room for days and she won't make a peep. Learning long ago that trying to fight only makes it worse, Yue knows very much that it's best to be silent, to be seen and not heard and sometimes not even seen. Just give it all up and pretend nothing's wrong. Let go of all the pain.

Except of course it isn't that easy, is it? The pain, the anger, the shame, the hatred, it all seethes and boils, waiting inside her heart for a single opportunity to turn everything upside down. A child smarter than she looks in some ways, and stupider in other ways, she can be dangerous if her feelings are allowed to come to a boil. While on the outside she's calm and silent, you can see her room full of torn up papers, scratched up walls, destroyed stuffed animals lining the floors.

Yue also has a bad habit of clinging to that one nice person who won't hurt her. But it's very hard to find that one person to rely entirely on. Perhaps if there was someone, maybe she could be turned from darkness to light.

LIKES
Destruction | Nothing feels quite as good as breaking things.

Solitude | Alone is safety, alone can't hurt you.

Misery | Seeing other people suffering helps her feel better.

Dreams | You can even be a good little princess rescued by a handsome prince in dreams.

DISLIKES
Yue Fan Xiang | A child who deserves nothing but what she gets.

Humans | They do nothing but hurt and hate and Yue is the same.

Noise | Too much noise hurts her head and makes her withdraw.

TALENTS
Breaking | If it exists, Yue can break it.

Bottling | Yue can keep it in longer than she should.

Singing | Though she hates her voice and doesn't hear the beauty.

FLAWS
Violent | She's learned it as a language.
Unforgiving | Hurt her and she won't forget.
Garbage | How she sees herself.

Passive | Prefers wishing for the world to end then actually doing anything about it.

FEARS
Humans | The root of all evil.

      Herself | She's a human after all.

Fire | The burns on her body are self explanatory.

Friends | Those closest to your heart hurt you the most.

"Walk off the cliff into destiny's death grip."

FAMILY
      Keeper | Gillian Eldriss | 41
      Keeper | Miranda Eldriss | 16
      Keeper | Tyler Eldriss | 19
      Soulmate | Orie Larson | 16

BIO
In the beginning Yue never really knew her parents. Her first memory of them was them begging for Yue to be spared when the local mafia came and stole her away. "Once you pay off your debt, we'll give her back." They claimed. Yue can faintly remember an auction, being dressed up all pretty when finally a man named Gillian Eldriss bought her, a higher up in the city's underworld, a local crime boss with much influence. Yue was put under his care as a new member of the Eldriss family. She was trained in the arts of violence, of control, of fear, of crime. But most of all she was taught to obey, to be pliant, to listen to what anyone said. Because she was a slave, she was made on the bottom of the totem pol and wasn't allowed any reprieve.

Yue always was a dreamy child. She liked to imagine fantastic landscapes and possibilities in her mind. A fellow slave, bought a few years ago, Orie Eldriss nee Larson, was the same and the two easily bonded as they were trained in weaponry and mafia affairs. She was a pretty thing, blonde with a bit of a bust, she was beautiful, like a pale flower in darkness. Sadly they were both on the bottom rung and neither of them were particularly good at hurting others. Every time they messed up, or sometimes even if it wasn't their fault, Gillian or his blood children, Miranda and Tyler, would take it out on Orie and Yue. Orie would always fight back, to yell at Yue to not just sit there and take it when they broke her fingers, stepped on her toes, tickled her for hours straight. But Yue saw how they treated Orie, how it kept escalating the more the screamed, so Yue knew to remain silent. Still, when things went well they were best friends, they were each other's only light in this dark unforgiving world.

At the young age of twelve there was a heist to take out a drug dealer who refused to pay his taxes. Yue was invited on this mission alongside Orie, Tyler, and Miranda. "Dad says if one of you does well, we'll promote you and you'll be blood children too." Miranda informed them. "Only the better one can be set free." Orie and Yue made a pact that day, they promised to both screw up so that one wouldn't have to leave the other. In the end it once the drug dealer was captured and it was time to deliver punishment, Yue decided to free him and let him escape to prove her loyalty to her fellow slave. That was when Orie grabbed her arm, shot the drug dealer to death, and dragged her in front of Gillian, the Keeper, informing him of her betrayal. Orie was thus promoted, and Yue was punished twice as hard for her betrayal.

After that day the girl wouldn't say a word. She silently accepted everything they did to her, and Orie no longer could look her in the eyes either. Even when Orie began punishing her by cutting her tummy she wouldn't look her in the eyes. Everything bottling up, Yue began destroying her room, breaking and clawing at everything to get rid of her will to fight, to bury it down so she won't make the mistake of attacking her family. Because the pain would get worse if she tried to fight.

But one day she had had enough, though. She didn't know how it happened, all she knew was that she shot and killed Gillian Eldriss, the bullet going right through his head. In return the rest of the family punished her extra hard, even after Miranda took her father's position as head of the Eldriss Branch. They punished her and then Orie made the decision. "Let's kill her and dump her in the river." Orie declared. So that was what they did, and Orie was the one who dealt the final blow. Except, of course, she didn't. "Swim to safety, you're free." Orie whispered as she threw the fake dead Yue into the river.

Yue of course didn't know how to swim and knocked her head on the rocks as she tried to stay afloat, drifting off to wherever destiny may take her.

"Play?" Zinnia inquired, holding up her doll. It was a toy her Mother had made her, a bit ragged from use, but still good. It was Zinnia's favorite, at least until she had discovered reading. "Not now Zinny, Mommy's busy." Her Mother was hanging up laundry on a line outside of their home in the mountains, the neighborhood children running around outside their fence, able to be heard from the backyard. "Play!" Zinnia tried again, hearing them, wanting to go be with them. "You can't," her Mother knelt down where Zinnia was sitting in the long grass, clutching her doll to her chest. She couldn't run like the other children, she could walk, but running was out of the question. "You need to rest," with the laundry done, her Mother carried her back inside, dark bags clearly visible.

Her Mother's face was a shadow, awake, Zinnia had no idea what she looked like and her dreams reflected that. "Mommy needs you to be a good girl, alright?" She placed Zinnia in a basket in the living room, but Zinnia wasn't content. When her Mother wasn't looking, she slid out of the basket and wobbled to the door, letting herself out. A tricky little toddler, Zinnia had always been an escape artist. She saw the other children older than her, running down the forest trail, kicking a ball. Zinnia was younger than all of them, their town was small, her parents being the first to have a child in nearly three years. Zinnia didn't care how much younger she was though, she wanted to play.

"Hey look, it's the kid!" The children came to a stop as Zinnia struggled to walk towards them. "Can I... play?" She asked, her voice suddenly shy, meek. They looked nervously from one another. "No!" The oldest decided, pushing her down into a puddle. "We don't play with weirdos!"

"Don't be mean Zeke!"

"My Mama told me the Evernight's are cursed!" Tears welled up in her eyes, she just wanted to play.

"Zinnia!"

"Run!"

Her Mother came stomping down the path, the other children fleeing as Zinnia cried. "Oh my, my Zinny, my special little girl." She knelt down and plucked her child out of the mud, holding her at an arm's length. "The other children don't understand just how precious you are."

Zinnia awoke early, a mouse skittering somewhere on the floor. Blithe was not in her room this morning, she must have had good dreams. She slid down from her bed, floating towards the bathroom. "Blithe!" The familiar suddenly appeared, holding a hairbrush. "I'm here, ready for action!" She saluted and knelt down, brushing out Zinnia's hair. "It's so long, you're like Rapunzel," Blithe snickered. "Please Blithe, I'm not so vapid." Blithe braided Zinnia's hair for her today, two long braids going down each shoulder. Her dress was patterned scenes from nature, green with a doe on the bottom and sheer sleeves that trailed down her arms. Blithe buttoned up the back for her, Zinnia checking in the mirror before deciding she was satisfied. "Thank you for your assistance, as always." Her familiar rolled her eyes, "it's my job you rascal."

It was early - had Zinnia or Blithe woken up yet? Yue did not know, but she didn't want to disrupt them either. She found a corner of a paper and Rain followed her down. Something nice about the magical world was that you didn't really need to waste paper. A simple spell Yue learned was a spell that erased a message after it was read, it would automatically erase so the paper could be reused. It was obvious the magical folk cared about maintaining the environment and taking care of nature. "We'll be practicing spells on the roof." She wrote in runic lettering. Rain nodded with a wink. "You did it!" Rain cheered, confirming Yue wrote it correctly. "I'm still not used to runes yet." She admitted sadly. "I hope I don't mess up later." She would do her best for now.

"This is our first Revenge Preparation Lesson Meeting!" Rain declared, the two of them sitting on the roof of Zinnia and Blithe's house. "Zinnia's probably going to be teaching you the basics in most of the other things." Rain said, the sun shining, a bright new day waiting for them to enjoy and make the most of. Of course, Zinnia's education would comprise of potions, of nature, basic spell structures, things that would probably be useful for academics. "I'll teach you some fancy spells!" Rain frowned, then smiled. "Don't worry, none of it will be dark magic this time." Still, Yue recalled the time when she cast Nox Walpurgis on the Divination teacher. That moment felt as if everything in her head made sense and she knew exactly what it was she was supposed to do.

"For today I will teach you a basic combat spell." Rain said with a grin, raising an eyebrow to look more mysterious than she was. "Because Master, you said you wanted to become a professional duelist! So by practicing Offense and Defense magic, your gates will become better aligned for more complicated spells." The more a witch used a certain kind of magic, the better they would become with that kind in general. Of course some mages had gates that were better at being aligned for more magics, some at being very strong in only one kind, it varied per witch. "Repeat after me." Rain held the wand and waved it in a semi circle. "Thrura Epsilon!" Nothing happened of course, because Rain wasn't the wand's owner.

So Yue did it, wondering what kind of magic was being cast. As she did it, a bubble burst from the wand and floated there, looking rather harmless. "Now watch this!" Rain waved her hand and a purple spark was thrust towards her. All of a sudden the bubble moved to catch it, the spell becoming trapped inside. "It's a bubble that can eat weak or medium spells. You can move it too." Yue moved her wand and the bubble followed the movements. She decided to drop the bubble on Rain's head, and Rain flinched. "What was the purple spell?" Yue asked, curious now. Rain shrugged. "It makes you flinch. That's pretty much all it's good for."

"I'll handle breakfast this morning," Zinnia decided, setting her feet on the floor. She wasn't bearing her weight of course, if one paid close attention, they could see the ends of her dress were slightly lifted, she was floating, her feet simply resting. Her toes had shiny polish on them, Blithe's doing, insisting her master be taken care of. If not for Blithe, Zinnia no doubt would be living as Madame Pomfrey's ward, needing her constant assistance. Her body wasn't deteriorating at a rapid rate now that she had taken to consuming more magic, using higher level spells. Had Zinnia learned earlier, had her parents not taken every spell book from her hands, no doubt she would be in better shape. "He'll be here soon," Zinnia wanted everything to be perfect for his arrival, therefore they had to eat swiftly if they were to be ready for his arrival.

"Breakfast!" Zinnia called as loud as her voice allowed. Blithe was sewing by the empty fire place, all of the windows flung open to allow the air to waft inside. It was a nice day out and a butterfly drifted into their home, landing on one of the flowers on the table. "A monarch," Zinnia admired as she sat in her seat, serving herself. She had made an old favorite, sausage hash. It wasn't much work, just grinding sausage, cutting potatoes, and lightly frying all of it with some garlic and onion until it smelled wonderful. Freya had taught Zinnia that it was the smell that let you know when food was ready. It would talk to your senses, having a certain texture, scent, and feel to it. "Where are those two?" Zinnia wondered, wanting to eat before the food grew cold.

"Are you sure you should have done that?" Blithe inquired, worried that Zinnia had spent too much energy and was now going to need time to recover. "I'm quite alright Blithe, but your constant fretting flatters me." Blithe rolled her eyes, her Master was fine enough to make quips. "I'll investigate," she rose, floating upwards towards the bedroom. It was in a sorry state, but the two mischief makers weren't there. Zinnia sighed, waving her wand to set the room straight before moving towards the open window. She looked up, calling out considering the bushes below had been left rather undisturbed. "Yue, Rain, breakfast!" Had they heard her? Zinnia hoped so. Whether or not the two were able to be presented to their guest was another thing.

A knock on the door startled her, he was here too early! Zinnia rose, floating towards the door. A man stood there, wearing a summer cloak and a vibrant button down with plain slacks. "Zinnia," Sir Flammel removed his hat and stepped into the threshold, grinning. He had a kind smile, "I received your letter of inquiry. I'm here for a visit," Zinnia floated back and curtsied. "It is a pleasure Sir, an honor truly. Please, come inside." She smiled politely, her hair bobbing up and down around her. "Ah, a suspension spell, very clever." He admired, removing his cloak and hanging it on the rack beside the door. "You flatter me, this is my familiar, if you recall, Blithe. The others should be here in a moment."

A voice called out to them from below, it was Zinnia! Yue had used the water bubble spell a few more times to try to make sure she got it right. Apparently you needed good timing - if you used it too early it would run out, too late and it wouldn't be able to protect you. "It's a good defensive tool, but you have to use it correctly." Rain instructed, wanting Yue to be better at keeping herself safe. Rain still wasn't used to living up here, she still wasn't able to fight very well just yet. "Thank you for teaching me." Rain nodded with a satisfied smile. "I mean, Zinnie's gonna be better to learn from, since she'll actually make you understand how spells work. I'm just teaching you how to copy me." It wasn't the same - learning from Rain was essentially taking shortcuts and ignoring the fundamentals. But Yue appreciated having another spell in her arsenal.

Reentering the house Yue saw a person she had never seen before. But who could it be, what was this person? "Someone strong." Rain answered, no doubt sensing it from this stranger. They were apparently an important guest and Yue and Rain both knew that they were going to have to behave now. The summer cloak was colorful, this man was no stranger to wearing vibrant outfits. "Oh, breakfast!" Rain snickered, running past Yue to get ready to dig in for some food. Yue smiled him, wanting to be polite. For important guests you had to be good, you had to treat them with respect, it was a lesson Yue learned the hard way thanks to Gillian's overbearing hand beating it into her each time she made a mistake.

"Umm... my name is Yue, and this is my familiar, Rainarch." She looked at Rainarch who sighed, tummy grumbling. The bat demon walked away from the food and held out a hand, trying not to be standoffish as she faced the man. "I'm Rain. Don't bully my Master or I'll bite your toes!" Was Rain a demon or just a guard dog? Yue almost laughed at how silly her demon was. "My name is Sir Flammel, and it's nice to meet you too." Yue nodded, glancing at breakfast. "Um, do you want some breakfast? You can have some of mine." It smelled so heavenly, was it obvious she was hungry by how longingly she looked at the food on the table, waiting to be devoured?

There had to be a reason this man was here. And then the name clicked in her head, a faint memory of a giant being asked for this man's name. "Slir Fammel!" Yue stammered, slapping her cheeks, pretending it was Gillian punishing her for being an idiot. "I - I mean, Sir Flammel." She did an awkward little bow. "I'm Yue... the new witch. Um, my voice, there's something wrong with it." She pointed to it, pretending Freya's light bind wasn't there on her wrist. "My familiar's powering it with dark magic right now, but..." She glanced at Rain who nodded, waving her hand. Suddenly Yue felt weaker, the dark magic leaving her chest, dissipating. She panted, then tried to speak and once again there was no sound that came out.

The only way to fix it was by reliving the moment where Yue snapped? Yue wasn't sure which moment exactly it was, but there were three specific points that could have been the crucial moment that ended her ability to speak. It was a mental block, so she was going to have to fight through it somehow - though Sir Flammel here seemed insistent on helping. Yue frowned, a cold chill down her spine that was not related to Rain. Was she really going to be able to do this? "I think I know where in her memories it could be." Rain said and Yue nodded to give her permission. "I'll stay outside so I can guide Flammel, but she's afraid... so she needs someone to go in with her." The bat demon looked pointedly at Zinnia. "It'll have to be you, I think."

"This mission is for the two of you." Gillian Eldriss said to Orie Larson and Fan-Xiang Yue, two twelve year old girls who he had been training for the past many years now to be strong, to be loyal, to serve the Eldriss family. Up until now they lived at the bottom of the ladder, serving to be punching bags for everyone else whenever they needed the stress relief. "You have an opportunity. The mission tonight is to hunt down a drug dealer who tried to infect our territory with his faulty stash, pretending to be sponsored by us." Gillian made a dark expression. "You two are to track him down and whoever kills him will be officially adopted as a blood child of mine. "Meaning they would be welcomed on the same level as Miranda and Tyler, and free from the abuse. The girls were full of scars detailing their lives since being sold into mafia crime. Finally was their chance for a big break.

As they headed out, armed and ready, Yue looked anxiously at Orie. They had been together for so long, being each other's only support and light in this dark world. "I don't want to kill him." Already they were made to kill, Yue's first murder was at age nine and Orie came a few months later. Orie had a smile on her face, a clever wink in her eye. Her blonde hair was beautiful and Yue stared at it as if it represented hope. Her own hair was plain and black, something no one could find beautiful. "He's trying to pit us against each other." Orie explained in hushed whispers as they headed out onto the street, following the info Gillian had given them. "We can't let him control us, Yue, we have to show that we can beat anything as long as we're together."

There had been many nights where the two clung to each other and cried, baring their hearts as soulmates. Yue nodded, feeling something close to strong. "Yeah." A steely determination emboldened in her heart thanks to her best friend's words. "Th-then we'll let the dealer go, and Gillian will just have to punish us both." It was scary, but they had survived abuse before. Together the girls found the dealer. "Go and be free." Yue told him, wishing she and Orie too had that luxury. Gillian had promised that if they ever thought of escaping the family, he would always find them. "Ohana means family." Gillian once said. "And family means no one gets left behind." Orie's hands were shaking, Yue noticed. Why were they shaking? Was something wrong? With a loud bang the gun fired, the bullet piercing the fleeing man's head and he collapsed.

"O-Orie?!" Yue gasped, staring at who she thought was her best friend. Orie glared at her then, stealing Yue's gun and pocketing it, grabbing her by the wrist with a stronger grip than Yue was prepared for. "You shouldn't have trusted me." Orie snarled, a nasty expression on her face, the face of the girl who was Yue's angel, who had been her whole world. Yue whimpered but it was too late. "Y-you... tricked me..." Orie grinned and then slammed the gun on her head, causing Yue's world to go dark.

Orie Larson was promoted to Orie Eldriss, allowed to fully take on the family name as one of them. With hugs and cheer she rose the ranks in the family, leaving Yue behind in the dust. Yue no longer had the heart to serve on active family duty - and after two years of silence and failure she was sent to permanently live in the punishment room. Orie walked in one day, leering down on her. "I've never done this before." Her former angel said curiously, holding up a lighter. Yue wouldn't meet her eyes, staring at the floor. It was many hours of burns and by then Orie knew how to control the flames, knew how to make sure none of the wounds were fatal. Hours of screams later the blonde finally relented. "So that's what it's like." She whispered as if having a revelation. "So this is how it feels to be on this side of the coin."

Gillian entered the room. Yue had a faint feeling it was her fifteenth birthday today, this sad winter day. Her room was a mess, stained with scratch marks and old dried blood, she hadn't left it except to use the bathroom for a year now. "In the end, you've simply been a disappointment." Gillian sighed, sitting down next to her, for once not punishing the girl. "We gave you love and in the end, you gave us this mess. We even provided you a room just for you, and you ruin it." Yue wasn't even listening, all she knew was that her precious gun was in his pocket. "But it'll be okay. I can give you a second chance, my baby girl, and you can join the family-" She barely even realized what happened when she heard the noise, she saw Gillian fall in a splatter of blood, the door tearing open as Miranda, Tyler, and Orie all saw the aftermath of what happened.

...

"Goodbye, Yue." Orie whispered as she let go, letting the chained up Yue adrift in the river's rapids. "You're free now." If Yue was looking she would have seen a tear fall from who she thought was her best friend's eye. In her heart, Yue silently begged for a chance to live, for a second chance to survive...

For a chance to pay Orie back for everything she's done.

Yue gave them the permission to go into her memories, a highly invasive technique that Zinnia was eager to learn, always open to indulging more information. "I'll be right beside you," Zinnia promised as they made Yue comfortable on the couch. Sir Flammel gave her a draught of peace before drawing the memory forth, the one that troubled Yue the mot. "You will go with her," he said to Zinnia, handing her a ball of blue mist. "Lentruman!" With a snap of his fingers, Zinnia was there, watching in the corner, seeing everything that had happened to Yue, the pain, the scars, watching as everyone she love tread upon her heart, shredding it beyond recognition. When it was over, Zinnia was ejected from the dream, breathing hard. Blithe was beside her, worried for her Master despite the fact that all Zinnia could think about was poor Yue.

Sir Flammel had sen it all as well, he had watched as Yue was cast into the river, as she was burned alive. "Your burdens," he said softly, "are going to be lifted." Sir Flammel's hands began to cast a warm glow as he began at Yue's toes. "Your scars will disappear, nothing but a memory, your troubles will be cast into the sea," he murmured as his hands swept over Yue's body, her scars healing, disappearing. "With this, Yue, I free you." Zinnia watched, wide eyes, as he complete the chant in a language she had never heard, in English. The glow began to fade and Zinnia eagerly rose to her feet, floating over to the spot Yue lay in, not wanting to invade Sir Flammel's personal space. "Did it work?" She inquired eagerly, a notebook floating somewhere behind them, recording today's events.

"The brain is the most complex organ of them all," Sir Flammel spoke softly, stroking his chin. "Similar to a maze, it is nearly impossible to navigate and find your way out of. Should you ever get lost, not only will you damage the mind, but the body." He explained, hoping that he had broken it down in simple enough terms that even the layman would understand. "If one cannot speak without their own power, they will never be a successful mage. In times like these, it is sheer will alone that must drive you to heal." In other words, even if she had gone on using Rain's dark magic, her spells would never have been potent enough to be overly successful. "Dark magic damages the mind, the body, and the soul."

"Often, our familiars mean well," he pet both Blithe's and Rainarch's heads as he spoke this, "but their magical properties are different from that of mages. Often times, while well meaning, they end up hurting their master unintentionally." Blithe's head suddenly hung in shame. Zinnia pat her arm, clearly recalling something that had happened in the past.

Something akin to terror, shame, and misery were all clear in Yue's eyes when they opened. She was dizzy and but tried to sit up on the bed, unable to meet Zinnia's eyes. It was one thing to tell someone, it was a whole other story to show that person and have them see it as if it were happening in real time. Rain had a dark expression on her face as she knew what had gone down, she was the one guiding the dream after all. The bat demon felt pain the first time she saw it and even now it still hurt. Was it a surprise to anyone that she wanted to eat Yue's dreams? She didn't want her Master to have to keep reliving the pain over and over again! Sir Flammel said his words, cleansing her body of her scars, of the proof of what her family had done to her. With his final words as the last of the scars faded from her body Yue's eyes fluttered shut and she fell limp.

"How long will she be asleep?" Rain asked worriedly, not liking the vague answers from Sir Flammel. It was clear that Flammel was a very powerful wizard, one who knew much more about magic than Rain did, possibly even more than Blithe. Zinnia seemed shaken by what she had seen. "She should awaken by tomorrow, she's simply exhausted after reliving the trauma." Sir Flammel explained and Rainarch nodded, deciding that that made sense. Both Blithe and Rain had their heads pat by the legendary mage. "I just want to help her." Rain said, shaking her head, acting more like a timid, frightened child than a powerful fearsome demon. "So I eat her dreams and distract her with playing." Was it wrong what she did? Something like tears brewed up in her eyes and her wings folded shamefully behind her.

Rain decided she knew what she was going to do. For however long it took for Yue to awaken Rain would remain at her bedside from day to night to day again! "I'll be her supernurse!" Rainarch declared, clinging to Yue's hand, stroking the soft skin, no longer rough and calloused. Rain continued to check her temperature throughout the day, adjusting her blanket minutely every time she sensed Yue was a tiny bit colder or warmer as necessary. She read stories of how she killed unsuspected mages in the in between world, trying to entertain Yue with her conquests. She even played with Yue's fingers and gave each one a name that the bat demon would proceed to forget in the next hour or so.

By the time the sun broke through the blinds a certain mage opened her eyes. Immediately she was tackled and Yue, feeling weak and tired yet somehow lighter all the same, blinked in confusion. "You're awake! You're awake!" Rain gave her a nose to nose nuzzle then stumbled out of bed. It was clear that the bat demon was beyond tired, having remained awake this entire time doing nothing but watching her master. "Yue is awake!" Rain yelled to wake up Zinnia and Blithe before she fell down the stairs in her lack of sleep.

Yue got up out of bed, she was very hungry. Just what had happened? The last she remembered was a comforting, almost fatherly voice telling her that it was okay, that she was allowed to try and be happy. Opening her mouth to silence, Yue let out a silent sigh. Not yet... but a part of her felt as if it wouldn't be long, either. She took careful steps down the stairs to help a passed out Rain onto her back. It wasn't as if she was at peace, or that the horrors from the past were gone...

But at the same time, the crippling weight it all once was was lightened, once an unbearable force, now something she with effort and time and help from her friends, Zinnia, Rain, and Blithe, would surpass soon. A content little smile appeared on the moon child's face as she prepared four servings of salad, remembering Blithe's instructions from the day before.

Blithe carried Yue carefully up to her bed, Rainarch following after her. "Thank you Sir Flammel, your assistance has been a most welcome comfort." Zinnia curtsied, dipping her head low. "No need to thank me," he winked, patting her head as well. "Let me see your wand," Zinnia handed it over without question, watching as he inspected it, holding it up towards the light. "Just as I thought, you've treated it well." He handed it back to her and Zinnia carefully placed the wand back in the holster she kept it in. "Freya has told me much about you, it's an honor to meet you at last." Her face turned bright pink, the legendary wizard was honored to meet her, a lowly student witch? "Your correspondence and questions are certainly peculiar, most mages aren't so... curious." He settled, sitting down in one of the chairs by the fireplace.

"A stellar student, showing promise in both spells and potions, proficient in most other things. There aren't many like you," this wasn't a compliment, Zinnia could feel the drop in her stomach. "But something is missing in your life, isn't it? You have all these things, but you're empty, Zinnia Evernight." He held her gaze, but the young witch had a sneaking suspicion he was seeing through her. It was a blow directly to her heart. "How did you...." she trailed off, her shoulders sagging. There was no one else here to see her, they were all upstairs, attending to Blithe. "It was easy to figure out," Sir Flammel's smile was kind, "because I was the same when I was your age." He rose, offering a hand to lift her from where she had sunk into the carpet. Zinnia took it, floating upwards once more.

"There is so much out there to see, Zinnia, I suspect you have an idea of what might lay beyond Constantina." Sir Flammel had been there when the mages turned to live in the forest, when the humans had slain their kind for performing everyday magic. "Are you suggesting I leave the village?"

"Never," Sir Flammel shook his head, "I'm suggesting you broaden your horizons." His watch began to make all sorts of strange noises, upon opening it, a bird popped out, informing him it was time to go. "I must take my leave," he picked up his cane and his cloak. "It was a pleasure, Zinnia, please do no hesitate to call should you need my services again." He disappeared just outside the threshold, it was rude to disapparate in someone else's home after all. Blithe rushed back downstairs, tails swishing eagerly. "Blithe... am I... empty?" Zinnia inquired, his words sticking to her, accusatory. It made her feel ugly, it made her feel cold.

"No," Blithe shook her head, wrapping her Master in her arms. "Empty is the one thing you're not."

The next morning came quickly, but Zinnia had trouble sleeping. By the time Blithe appeared in her room, she was already dressed, having done her best to button her own gown today. "What are you doing?" Her familiar laughed upon seeing her state. "Is this because of what Sir Flammel said?"

"No, now fix this mess please, I must go check on Yue."

Yue calmly worked on the salads, doing her best to try to make them both yummy and pretty as a way to thank everyone who had helped her. She pretended she was humming a simple melody, pretending she could add words to it, oh what sweet harmony it could have been if only she still had a voice. Afraid of fire, Yue's best recipe was simply salad so she wouldn't have to use the magical fire to cook meat or anything. There was a rustling and Yue looked over to see Rain waking herself up, rubbing at her eyes. "Oh, Master!" The bat demon waddled over, no doubt sleepy from having stayed up all night. "Do you want me to give you a voice back?" Yue shook her head, this time she was determined to make it on her own power.

Rain nodded, giving a helping hand with the breakfast salads, with breadcrumbs and some sort of white ranchy sauce mixed in. "I'm a little sad." Rain admitted, wings wriggling on her back. It was obvious the bat wanted to help, to be useful. But from what the legendary Sir Flammel had said about what dark magic did to the body, Yue was not so sure she wanted to keep it in her body. Maybe for demons it was a fine option but Yue didn't want to be weakened further. She would simply save the dark magic for emergencies. "But I'm also proud you want to speak without relying on me. I know you can do it."

Did Yue still want to get revenge on Orie? Well, that was a hard question to answer. While yes, it was still something that motivated her and gave her drive, it also wasn't chaining her down. It was simply a goal - one that didn't have to be med, but could if the option ever presented itself. "I still want revenge." Rain glowered, eyes smouldering. "Because anyone that hurts you should have to pay! Yeah!" Rain heard movement and Yue did too - Zinnia and Blithe were awake it seemed. Was Zinnia going to want to check up on her? Yue sent a thought Rain's way and the bat demon nodded, scampering up the stairs. "I'll bring Zin down here and let her know." Rain said helpfully, tail wagging.

Yue finished making the salads, carefully setting them down one at a time. Her mind jumped forward, to the childish hope that maybe she really could succeed. The idea of becoming a professional magical duelist, an athlete... that sounded very appealing. She held her wand, deciding to polish it as she waited for everyone to come down for breakfast, she even poured milk from the bottle for everyone! "Master, I brought Zinnia!" Rain had grabbed Zinnia and put the wheelchair on her head, depositing Yue's mentor down at the breakfast table. Yue smiled at Zinnia and waved in greeting, could she tell how much lighter Yue felt now?

Zinnia floated downwards towards the downstairs of her home, Blithe right behind her. “That Flammel man was sure knowledgeable,” she admired, her tails swishing. Clearly she was pleased, but about what, Zinnia wasn’t certain. His words still left a bad taste in her mouth, as knowledgeable as he was, he had no idea of Zinnia’s true persona. It was useless to hope that his words would change, they rang true, no doubt. No doubt Blithe had seen it this entire time, the emptiness within her, a cavern she had longed to fill with spells and magic, but had only succeeded in making the cavern bigger. Perhaps that was why she had taken to Yue and Rainarch so swiftly, eager to fill that cavern.

Downstairs, Yue and Rain were making breakfast salads, an interesting choice for the first meal of the day, but Zinnia was happy to see that they hadn’t made a mountain out of a mole hill. “It looks good,” Blithe admired, proud of the two of them. “Yue, how do you feel?” Zinnia inquired as she moved to straighten an array of books she had strewn on the floor last night in a hunt to search for something that could help her modify the potion for the tree fungus. She had already given the dryads a sample, they were pleased with it, but Zinnia knew she could do better. “Sir Flammel did not scare you with yesterdays ordeal, did he?” She moved to take a seat by the table, knowing that the magic wouldn’t be instant. To have such hope would be foolish, a wound like this took time to heal.

“Dean Eincrad will be coming by today,” she mentioned, “Freya as well,” they would be dropping in, one to check on Yue’s progress, the other to check on her apprentice and talk shop about spells. It wasn’t an apprenticeship so much as an equal learning opportunity and it gave the Council reason to keep an eye and an ear on her antics. Once the salad was served, Zinnia ate slowly, having to wipe a significant amount of dressing off of the leafy greens. She didn’t enjoy heavy flavors, especially so early in the morning, but Zinnia didn’t want to be rude and so she finished most of it. “Next time, maybe a little less dressing?” Blithe suggested, “it’s nice, but you don’t want to burden the vegetables and cover the flavor.” The plates cleared themselves as always and a knock on the door came, just as scheduled.

Dean Eincrad stood in the doorway, his figure taking up majority of the frame. He knelt to enter, familiar with the space. “Dean,” Zinnia dipped into a polite curtsy as he nodded in return. “Zinnia, a pleasure, I’ve come to check on Yue’s progress.” Zinnia turned, “you’ll be pleased, I should think. She can already read and write most Latin and is excelling in potions. Although, Yue desires to study offensive magic and divination. I think she’s already had an encounter with Professor Forester,” Dean Eincrad nodded, aware of the accident that had happened during the festival and where Yue and Rain had been whisked off to. “I’ve spoken to him about it, I’ve made it very clear that he is to not lay a hand on another student.” Dean Eincrad turned to Yue, “Please, demonstrate to me what you’ve learned.”

Yue nodded, accepting the advice. It was her first time trying to cook something, so naturally it wasn't going to go well. "Hey!" Rain snapped, looking upset as her wings wiggled. "Don't say bad things about Master's cooking!" The bat demon ate it, gulped, walked up and pat Yue on the shoulder, a sad expression on her face. "Yue, I regret to inform you that there's too much sauce, you should give us meat with it too!" Yue made a silent giggle and nodded, thanking the three of them for the advice. The next breakfast was going to be even better, wasn't it? The plates got to cleaning themselves magically and that was when Dean Eincrad came just as Zinnia said he would. Yue waved in acknowledgmnent and resopect for the man who had opened her gates.

He wanted to see just what she was capable of, what she could do. What had she learned over her time here so far, with Zinnia teaching her, and Rain teaching her some things as well. Yue was mute right now but that was okay, she didn't need her voice to make a potion. She sent her intentions to Rain who transliterated for her. "Yue's going to make a Glitterlance potion." Rain said with a soft smile, her tail itching to help but knowing it would be better if she didn't. This was Yue's show, Yue's chance to show that she deserved a chance to attend at the University. A Glitterlance potion was one that, after being brewed, would solidify and become a lance made out of glitter, a special fae weapon that only did damage if used in self defense. It was medium difficulty, but she would do her best.

Yue put the ingredients in, the Skalper's eye (Rain in the end donated it to the cause, rather than make a hunger potion), a newt's tongue, a dryad's shedded leaf, and then a cross stir with the ladle, then she started the fire and added exactly three and a half sprinkles of nymph glitter. She let it simmer for another minute then did twelve turns mimicking the hands of a clock with the cauldron and finally she stopped. The potion began to glow and then there was the undoubtable sound of the liquid hardening and shaping itself accordingly. A long stick with a blade at the tip, the entire weapon glowing a sparkly pink, Yue held it up for the Dean to see. It wasn't the best quality, the glitterlance was a bit too brittle, the blade too long and the stick too short, but hopefully it would still suffice.

Next Rain would show off a spell she could cast. Giving Rain the signal she was given her voice back just for now. Raising her wand, Yue decided to give it a go. Zinnia had told her to learn spell components and then try to put them together to make a spell. Granted any spell she would make was likely already an established spell, but it was a good first step in the art of spell creation. "Veritcus Aune!" She raised her wand upwards, a small raincloud appearing at the end of it and following her movements. As the cloud moved, it left behind a trail of rainbow that shimmered in the air. "It's a little useless." Yue said, playing with the cloud to make the rainbow trail go all around the room. "But I still like it." Unfortunately, it was also leaving water on the floor.

After the showcase of her skills, Dean Eincrad seemed to congratulate her, while it wasn't perfect and her movements around the cauldron were still a little clumsy, it was good enough to impress him. All she needed now was the evaluation from Ulrich and then she would be clear to join the new year in the fall. Rain was looking at her and Yue nodded, the bat demon with a wave of her arm dispelled the dark magic in the moon child's throat, stealing away her ability to speak once again. One day she would regain her true voice independent of any magic, but for now this would have to do. The anxiety from today's showcase seemed to not hurt the performance too much and in the end the Dean would be heading out.

Yue made a smile that indicated it was all thanks to Zinnia and her guidance thus far. "I helped too, a little!" Rain insisted, heart shaped tail thumping on the floor as if it had a mind of it's own. She wiggled her hips a little and grinned. "But it really was mostly Zin-Zin. Thank you for teaching Master!" They were one step closer for Yue to be strong enough to control her fate. It would be a long road to get to that point but eventually with enough strength no one would ever be able to get in your way. Only once she was one of the most powerful mages in the world would she be truly safe from getting hurt. Gillian had been strong, yes, but in the end he blundered and so he died. Yue wouldn't let herself let her guard down, she knew better.

The only female member of the Elder Council had come, it was Freya. While Zinnia was Freya's apprentice, Yue couldn't help but wonder if Ulrich had any plans in mind for her. In any case the dark haired girl gave a shy little wave towards Freya, but the angelic witch was here to talk to Zinnia about things that did not concern her. "No, me and Master have a little trick we want to try." Rain said with a giggle. They had had this idea for a while now, but Yue figured it wouldn't hurt to try it out here. As Zinnia and Freya spoke about dark magic, Rain dissipated into a fog of mist that floated towards Yue, wrapping around her body like a vice.

Finally, the end result was here. Rain was draped around Yue, forming both a dark leathery cloak that could close in the front with golden string but otherwise flew open, a white tunic top with a reddish short skirt bottom. Rain had also become metallic boots as well. "Ta dah!" Rain cheered, her voice coming from somewhere in the folds of the cloak. "I can change my shape with mist and turn into magical armor for Yue!" Rain decided to cast a lightning spell at the cloak, which absorbed the bolt of electricity as if it were nothing. "I bet Blithe can't do this." Rain taunted, while Yue happily brandished her wand, blissfully pretending that she was being a cool and powerful witch, capable of fighting evil and protecting good.

They spoke about spells and potions for a while, Freya excusing herself after a bit to leave. Zinnia bid her farewell and went to check on Yue and Rain, who had been suspiciously quiet. When she opened up the door, Zinnia blinked, observing the formation of Rainarch transforming into a cloak and boots. She clapped, her smile small and polite once more. "Impressive transformation," Blithe poked her head in, interested as to what the two of them were up to. She morphed from a cute fox into a humanoid form, her eyes wide. "That's not something I can do," Blithe admitted, since her form was solid and not made of mist. "I can do this though," she winked, wrapping Zinnia in her tails and lighting them all on fire. "An interesting application, but completely impractical." She broke free of the tails, drifting towards Yue to circle around her.

"Impressive, but you'll never need it considering there is no fighting in Constantina." It was peaceful here, magic allowed them to live lives to their fullest. If Zinnia didn't know any better, she would say that Yue was preparing for a battle that would never come. "Still, you won't be much of a witch until you can speak." Zinnia turned, "now, let's quit fooling around and get to work. There's plenty of room for improvement," there were things that they could do without utilizing a voice, mix potions, practice Latin characters, organize herbs, and commit spells to memory. "I have some books I borrowed that assist in memorization," Zinnia took out her wand and waved it once, a book flying from the downstairs and into her fingertips. "These are basic spells every witch should know."

They weren't all that complex and if Yue did them right, she might even be able to use one or two without her voice. Most young mages could do a spell or two without speaking any actual words, it all had to do with how one carried themselves. The more confident a witch in her abilities, the stronger her spells would be. Vice versa for a wizard, although Zinnia couldn't pin point exactly what it was that the difference between the two of them. Zinnia didn't exactly care either, "Bring the book to the garden," Zinnia advised. Today was a busy day, there were plenty of chore that she had to take care of. She had been neglecting her garden with school and the lake, but now she needed to tend to it before the animals grew impatient.

"We live off of the land, but the animals depend on us to care for them, as much as they care for us." Zinnia explained as she knelt in the dirt, rolling up her sleeves. "We need to protect them, although others have this new age mindset that we take what is ours and what we take belongs to us." Zinnia shook her head, she hated how damaging that was towards the land, the animal, and the magical folk that lived beside them.

Constantina was a place of peace, the only fighting was supposedly due to something wrong with Yue herself, or in official dueling tournaments or just normal duels between consenting contestants. So why was it that Yue was so drawn to the idea of combat practicality? Why was it that, while it was frightening being targeted by the dark mage that sent her to the in between world, how it was terrifying and painful when Forster picked the fight and issued his warning, it was those moments that got her heart thumping the hardest? Was it because of her childhood and upbringing that honed her naturally towards combat? While it was nice to just live peacefully so far, there was a sleepiness to it, she was at risk of losing her sharp senses if everything was peaceful.

Was something wrong with her? Yue didn't know. Now that she felt more comfortable in the magical world she couldn't help feeling as if there was something missing. Perhaps it was just the way she was. Still, what kind of person wouldn't want to live in peace and quiet? Maybe Yue just needed more time to adjust. Rain released her, returning to her humanoid form with a giggle. Blithe could light her tails on fire which brought a chill down Yue's spine. Ever since Orie had burned her alive she never liked fire, there was a reason why she didn't want to learn potions that much, or why she was averse to cooking anything that required using heat, why her main area of spells seem to involve water somehow in it's magic. Even her wand was water based, with a scale of Scylla and tooth of Charybdis, two beasts of the sea.

Zinnia had a lot to teach her, since no doubt Ulrich would have higher expectations than what Dean Eincrad would. Zinnia taught her more about how witches and wizards are meant to live side by side with nature, rather than trying to take it all in a show of greed. There were basic spells every mage should be able to cast without speaking. Yue could do one of them, it was the purple bolt that Rain had used on her before, the one that could make you flinch. It was a simple burst of energy that interrupted whatever it touched, but it did nothing else. Largely harmless, but rather useful if used in conjunction with a more offensive spell to stop your opponent from maintaining their shield spell-

Yue shook her head, sighing. No, Zinnia probably didn't want Yue to have to try to contextualize every spell for a combat usage. That wasn't what magic was for. Yue looked at Zinnia, scribbling down a question in messy latin. "With my past, and who I am now, what do you think of my future?' Yue wrote down what Forster divined for her, the two potentials paths in her future. "Do you think I'' become a powerful mage for good, or the world's strongest darkest mage?" There was a lot of worry for both sides. Yue wanted to become a good witch and earn her right to call Constantina a home. But it couldn't be denied that there was a darker part of her that missed the thrill of battle and conquest, the feel of her gun's cold steel in her hands, aimed at an unsuspecting foe.

"You won't let me become a bad witch, right?" Yue stressed, hoping her writing wasn't too awful.

Zinnia wiped dirt off of her gloves and picked up a trowel, working the land as much as she could on her knees while Blithe and Rain fooled around in a game of some sort of demonic tag. She looked up when Yue tugged on her sleeve, scribbling in messy Latin on a slip of parchment. "Your future?" Zinnia questioned, wiping sweat off of her brow. Futures were hard to divine, especially specific ones that could often be taken out of context. "The future is ever changing, Yue," Zinnia turned towards a shriveling plant as an example. "This plant appears as though it's going to collapse on itself," she said, gently smoothing out one of its leaves with a gloved hand. "With a little bit of love and time, the plant will thrive." She poured some water over it, the sprout seeming to perk up. "People are like plants, we can thrive on our own, flourish with care, or wither away."

There was no other way Zinnia could put it. She contemplated the next part of Yue's query, about becoming a powerful mage. "A great witch isn't born overnight," she explained gently. "Forester might have divined that, yes, but it will be many years from now before anyone will truly know." She pulled a weed out of the flower bed, the plant screaming until she cast a dizzying charm that made the weed run around in circles until finally, it nestled itself outside of the garden and into the grass. "Our fate is always in our own hands, we can do our best to guide ourselves in the right direction, but without guidance, we will be aimlessly wandering in circles our entire lives." Zinnia hoped what she was saying made sense, she didn't want to confuse Yue.

"I will do my best go guide you, of course, but when the time comes, you are the only one who can choose which path to go down." Zinnia couldn't exactly picture Yue as a dark witch considering when she had arrived, she had been a frightened little mouse who had feared her own shadow. Now she was thriving and hopefully with the return of her voice would come that shining personality once again. "We are all given the freedom to choose to walk down our own paths," in a way, as much as she despised her parents, Zinnia had them to thank for that. They had given her the freedom, instead of secluding her to her home, to choose her own fate and walk towards the path of greatness. Of course, she would never tell them that.

"You have potential Yue, I'll leave it at that. Now, put on a pair of gloves or open up that spell book, there are flower beds in need of weeding." There was magic that could do this all for them of course, but Zinnia preferred to work the land with her own two hands, it was much more satisfying when the result was of your own patience and hard work rather than simply relying on magic to take care of every little thing. Was it exhausting? Yes, entirely, but it was rewarding when the flowers bloomed and glowed in the evening.

Yue asked the question, biting her lip in worry. What did Zinnia think? Did her mentor think anything of all of it? She wanted to know, then maybe she would have an idea as to how to conduct herself for the future in order to get the road she wanted. Zinnia however was not going to give her any sort of definite answer. She referred to a plant that needed help to thrive, or it could potentially wither away. Was that how Zinnia saw her, a plant with the potential to either bloom or die? Yue did not know what to think of it, but she hoped that that wasn't all there was to it. "I'll try to bloom." Yue replied in writing, putting the quill down. Now was time for work, not time for silly thoughts.

The garden needed to be cared for. Zinnia went down to get to work and Yue knew she was expected to help out as well. Perhaps by doing so the dryads across the fence would stop glaring at her with eyes full of fear and suspicion. Did they think she was going to become a dark witch and destroy everything? Or did they just not like her after the incident with the Elder Tree? Yue gave them a brief wave and then looked into the spellbook. She didn't have her voice just yet but that didn't mean it would be impossible to assist. Yue went to the section on non-verbal spells, which was a somewhat long list of weak magics that couldn't compare to spells with a verbal component. She could make little sprinkles of water to help the plants that needed it - she could tell based no the color of the soil and the feel of the plant depending on type - she cast a simple animation spell to have the knife cut at the weeds to get them out of the garden.

By the end of it Yue was tired, sitting down in the shade provided by her demon who had gotten tired of playing around with Blithe. "Good work!" Rain said with a cheeky grin. "You were finally helpful for once!" Yue rolled her eyes, trying to ignore the chill in her spine. It was a permanent feature of her life now, a small price to pay in exchange for the friend she earned in Rainarch. "Hey, I was helpful! I gave the boob fox some exercise!" Yue thought back to Baroness Licht and the incoming Second Impact. What would happen if the Kings were to rise again? "Well, obviously, destroy everything. They'll easily break through the veil and any diplomacy laws between demon and mages will be promptly ignored." Rain said with a shrug. "Lumos especially believes that you mages are not humans and should be fighting against humans just like the demons are, and that by hiding away you're all being cowards." Did Rain meet this Lumos once before? Yue nodded gravely. She hated humanity, but she didn't think genocide was the right idea.

...........

Ulrich frowned at this girl. She was a mystery, even to him. She was telling him all sorts of things that may or may not be true, it was hard to tell for now. Perhaps Forster, Constantina's best diviner, would be able to help in this regard. "So everything you said is truth." He asked and the girl nodded. there was still so much to know, but her skill in occlumency was strong, he wasn't able to break through except to see whatever she wanted him to see. "As per your request you'll enroll in the University, niece." The girl nodded, a forlorn look in her eyes. "To complete my mission, there's someone I have to meet." The girl had something she needed to accomplish, and her uncle Ulrich was definitely going to help her out. Elders were allowed to sponsor two students per year, and this girl and Yue were the two he would bring to the University this year.

Zinnia nodded, satisfied and turned towards working the garden. It was a lot of work, even after Yue was done helping, Zinnia continued, her hands shaking from the work. "Who are you calling boob fox!" She yelled to Rainarch, her tails lighting up with fire. The fox shook her head and turned back to her Master, grabbing her hands to stop her from removing another weed ."You're overdoing it, you're going to hut yourself," Blithe said lightly, not wanting Zinnia to injure her arms, considering that was a mage's most important part. "Nonsense Blithe, I'm perfectly fine," Zinnia lied, knowing her familiar could see right through it. "I'm not letting you do anymore work," Blithe lifted Zinnia easily, carrying her towards where Rain and Yue were sprawled in the shade of the porch. She set her Master down beside them and went inside, "I'm gonna make lemonade," Blithe disappeared behind closed doors.

"The Barons won't be able to enter Constantina again," Zinnia spoke casually, "the Elders are working to make certain that no demon can enter our realm without permission again." That incident at the festival had been a stroke of luck, they had picked the right day at the right time, nothing more, nothing less. They wouldn't be so lucky again, the Dean worked closely with the council, no doubt the border walls were being reinforced, they were hard at work making certain no demon came into their homes, unwelcome. "The mages aren't cowards, we're simply protecting ourselves from what is to come. The humans have always had self destructive tendencies, this is no different." They had brought it upon themselves, this time, however, there would be no witches or wizards to save them.

Blithe returned with lemonade, "Most demons can't apparate the same way mages can, we have to be summoned, which means that someone was working with the demons on the inside." She poured four cups and sat down as the cicadas began to chirp, the sounds of summer filtering through the green house. "Blasphemy," Zinnia scowled. "Who knows?" Her demon contemplated, tails swishing, she winked in the direction of Rainarch and Yue, "this is all just speculation of course. Although I suspect Yuu and his sister, Yuna, wouldn't be so opposed." Zinnia shook her head, "Let's not speak ill of the damned." Blithe choked on her lemonade, coughing as she laughed.

"Tomorrow, we should do something different." Zinnia decided, "I'm sick of the ordinary, Yue, pick something to do. I'm utterly bored of my routine," several books floated outside, guides to their realm. "There are mountains to the north and a city that is perpetually covered in snow to the east."

Yue and Rain were given the choice of what to do for tomorrow. The two were huddled together in their room in the late of night, trying to figure out what they wanted to do. "The mountains will be a tough trek, even with magic Zinnia might have trouble." Rain thought aloud as the books were sprawled before them. Constantina was the big city but that didn't mean there were other places in the magical world to explore. Constantina was merely the capital city! "What about the Crystal Observatory?" Rain asked, tail wagging. To the far north there was a tower made of ivory, with almost one hundred crystal balls within. Some are tuned to observe the demon realm, some to watch human affairs as the silly children of men drove themselves closer and closer to oblivion, others to maintain and survey the magical world. Yue shook her head, she didn't think anyone without clearance was allowed there. There was a lot of sensitive information there.

"The best chefs in the magical world have a village in the Magrul Volcano's caves." Rain's tail thumped in excitement at the idea. For a mist demon that did not need to eat for sustenance, she sure loved to placate her tastebuds, didn't she? "Are you calling me a glutton?" Yue wondered if there was a reason Zinnia specifically pointed out the mountain and snow city. Was it because they were more easily accessible than the Fountain of Love, a giant fountain dedicated to the spirits of love high up in the sky above the clouds. "You know, I wanna go to the Celestial Palace." Rain said with a sneaky grin. Yue knew what it was of course, a palace where the old Imperial Family, the first bloodline of the Original Mage resided up there. Now mages used the Elders to govern the land, but in the past it was those in the hidden Celestial Palace that dictated things. It was a palace that was hidden and lived up above the clouds.

Of course, a commoner and a demon like Yue and Rain would never gain access up there.

In the end the two decided on the Wrestal Vale, the town of perennial snow. With that, Yue closed her eyes, wondering what nightmare would greet her this time.

While Orie liked to use fire, Gillian employed the usage of the whip, and Miranda's personal favorite was water torture, Tyler was a bit different from the others. Yes, Yue dreaded his visits to the punishment room as much as she dreaded the others but that didn't mean he hurt as much as they did. "Hullo." Tyler entered, locking the door behind them, kicking his shoes off as if they were a bother, hands still in his pockets. Yue did not speak because she could not speak, at least she didn't think so. Instead she blinked to acknowledge him, chains heavy on her ankles and wrists, prohibiting any hope for escape. Every time he looked at her like this there was an odd look in his eyes, one Yue could not decipher. One she wasn't meant to be able to read.

"Calm down, you know nothing's going to happen." The rule was that once a day, someone could play with her unless she was in critical condition. Once she had her daily quota of punishment done she would be freed from the punishment room back to her normal room, chained to her bed with two daily releases for bathroom purposes. Today was Tyler's day to come. So the violent boy sat next to her and opened up his bag where his favorite torture toys were. "Ah, here's where we left off last time." He pulled a book out - well it was less a book and more a Japanese comic, one featuring a boy who joins the military to fight in a post-apocalypse world, with a brother who was turned into a vampire. "So Shinoa invites Yuu to..."

Yue always hated these visits. Because the stories were always so interesting it meant she was always wishing for more once it was over, it kept her hoping every time the door opened, it gave her the gift of disappointment when anyone else came, instead of more story time, torture awaited.

Everything would have just been easier if only she could everyone gave her torture so she would have never had the gift of manga in her life.

Zinnia sat in the study, her Father's study, reading a book on herbology and the practical uses of herbs in the medicinal field. She was five, Blithe sitting on the windowsill as a fox, bathing in the sunlight. She pretended she couldn't hear the arguing in the other room, her Mother and Father, who as of late, yelled at each other more than they spoke. Eventually, their voices died down. Zinnia swallowed and closed the book, Blithe opening one eye. The door was pushed ajar, her Mother peeking inside. "Zinnia, there's someone I would like you to meet." Her Mother's smile was kind, if only she could remember the warmth it had brought her whenever she saw those pearly whites. This day was forever soured in her memory, that loving smile ruined by her putrid memory of that wretched day.

There was a woman in the living room, a stranger in every sense of the word. A man was with her, his graying hair and scarred face frightening the child. Her Mother held her hand, leading the child towards the stranger. Zinnia hobbled, she was bow legged, her toes pointing inwards, having never properly learned how to walk. Her parents had tried everything from herbs to splinting, but the medicine woman in town had insisted that Zinnia would grow out of it on her own and so, they let her be. "Zinnia, this woman is Elder Council Woman Freya," her Mother said gently, her face a blur, but her voice heavy." Zinnia looked up at the glowing figure, a shining halo of light surrounding her head. She swallowed hard, well aware of what it meant to meet a council member. "Am I... in trouble?"

"No! Zinny, no," her Father hugged her close. "You're growing too fast for us Zinny, my little pixie so... your Mother and I are sending you away."

"Away?"

"I'm going to take you with me to Constantina," Freya knelt down, her knees in the worn carpet. "You and I are going to become very close," she squeezed Zinnia's hands, the child utterly confused. "Mama and Papa are coming too, right?" The child inquired apprehensively. "No Zinny, your Papa and I are staying here," her Mother touched her shoulder, shaking her head. "You'll be going with Blithe." Her familiar bound over, the fox winding her way around Zinnia's legs. "No, I don't want to go! Not without you!" She hobbled towards her parents, who stepped back. There was fear in their eyes, why? Why had Zinnia never noticed it before? Her knees wobbled, giving out. Freya reacted, catching her, lifting the child into her arms.

"It'll be alright Zinnia, you and I are going to become very good friends."

"More dreams about your parents?" Blithe inquired as she brushed Zinnia's hair, the two of them going through their morning routine in the bathroom. Zinnia was dressed warmly, she had a feeling that she knew what Yue and Rain were going to pick. "They're very strange, I can't recall their faces, but I remember their eyes." She said, fingering her wand. Blithe rose, having finished brushing and braiding her Master's hair. "I'm going to prepare breakfast this morning, don't worry yourself with the cooking." She floated downstairs as her familiar went to rouse the two sleepy heads in the next room.

Dressed snugly in an outfit Rain bought for her - if by buy you mean asking Zinnia to buy - and already they were on the trek. The dog ears on the cap kept flopping around as they opened door and headed out, saying their farewells for now to the dryads watching from across the fence, they happily tittered for Zinnia and then glared daggers Yue's way. The moon child did not mind, she knew that she deserved it. Mages were meant to get along with nature but Yue had no such love for nature that most did. She felt more comfortable in urban settings, not that they really had anything that urban in the magical world. "Boob fox is lucky." Rain said sadly, staring at Blithe's chest. "All the fat means extra layer of warmth."

You couldn't apparate too far because every mage had a safety range that was unique to them based on mana and familiarity with the spell and the locale. You also couldn't chain too many apparates together since you were at a higher risk of leaving a part of you behind. Today's trek was going to be a mix of walking and apparations, which was the standard form of travel without broomsticks for everyone. Yue would have to learn broomstick travel at a later date, once she was already enrolled most likely. They would be taking turns, and Rain handled the first apparate shift, taking them Eastward bound. "Wrestal Vale has some of the best jewelry!" Rain chattered excitedly, tail wagging as she walked along the road. "We should buy a ring in Blithe's name and send it to Zinnia!" Yue giggled silently, even if the plan was useless since the two victims of her plot were overhearing it already.

"The best reason to go the Vale is because the time of year." Rain recited from the guide book that they had pored over last night. Yue still faintly remembered the dream, a part of her longed to go back to the human world if only to catch up on all the manga she was missing out. There were so many stories she wouldn't get to finish with Tyler now. "Around this time the Snow Dragon clan migrates from Mistfall Glacier to the Wrestal Cliffs." Apparently it was a very good sight to see. If you were lucky a scale of a Snow Dragon would fall from the sky during their flight, a very powerful synthesis tool for potions that was incredibly rare to get to the point that it was illegal to sell it on the markets because otherwise it would encourage poachers.

There was a sneaky glow in Rain's eyes once it was Blithe's turn to group apparate them to the next stop, where they would have to walk a bit farther and then apparate once more to get to their destination. "Then me and Master are gonna use the scale for a secret potion!" The two decided on the Vale because of the usefulness if they were able to find a Snow Dragon scale. It was a vital component for a potion, it was a high difficulty potion but Yue knew with Rain they could do it.

It was a Potion of Dragon Might, to increase muscle levels for a week. With it, if there was ever an emergency situation that required it, Zinnia would be able to live with normally functioning muscles for a week, freedom from the chair. You needed a scale from a Snow Dragon, a Fire Dragon, a Wind Dragon, and a Divine Dragon in order to brew the potion. Yue intended on getting on of each scale to give Zinnia the gift.
