a character in “Detroit Heroes”, as played by kemj25

Description

Hero Name: The Avenger
Alias: Ricky Grant
Age: 20
Gender: M

Physical Description: Ricky looks a bit like a street hoodlum. He's got long, dark hair and is far from clean shaven. He also tops that all off with piercings and tattoos that mark his body. Beyond all that, Grant has an innocence in his eyes.

Costume Description: Grant aimed for something practical for his costume, something that works in combat and stealth situations. He wears a pull-over hoodie, jeans, and work boots & gloves. Underneath the hoodie is a Kevlar vest and then a muscle shirt. Over the hoodie are custom made leather shoulder pads, which wrap around his front and back. On the front is a bandoleer for various toys and the back has sheaths for his weapons. Grant also wears elbow and knee pads, and wears a holster for his stun gun. To hide his face, Ricky Grant wears a classic hockey mask that was his father's, who was a goaltender back in the 60s and 70s. The mask itself is painted to look like an angry skull.

Gear: Grant has two cattle prods that he uses in most hand-to-hand situations. In addition to weapons, he always carries a holstered stun gun to subdue criminals. In his bandoleer pouches, Ricky has an assortment of toys, such as caltrops, a night vision monocular, a handful of USB Drives, two flash bangs, and his iPod which he keeps to play his theme song, "Breaking the Law" by Judas Priest, when needed. Above all, Ricky Grant keeps his most important tool with him at all times, his intelligence.

Personality: Ricky is a very, very smart guy. Smart enough to graduate top in his class at any college, if he had ever gone. He likes to be part of the counter-culture, pushing social norms. Being a vigilante is honestly a good match for his personality. Since he's young, he's not the most wise, which also means he may not always make the best decisions. This is not for a lack of effort though. He values justice and the human life.

Bio: Ricky Grant is a Detroit native and knows the city very well. Fortunately, he grew up middle class and enjoyed most of his life as a stupid kid, occasionally getting into minor trouble. His parents made their living by running a small, mom-and-pop bakery; however, when Grant was eighteen years old, his parents' shop was burned down after refusing to pay extortion money to the Chairmen. Not only that, but his girlfriend at the time had joined the gang and was part of the group that torched the place. Betrayed by his love and fueled by the chance to avenge his parents' dream, Ricky Grant took up a new identity to fight crime.

So begins...

Everyone waited in the debrief room in the Grand Circus Warehouse. Each vigilante was invited to be part of a team and were waiting for the man who summoned them all. After everyone settled in, an older gentleman walked in. Roughly in his 60s, grey hair, eye patch, trench coat. This was the Voice. He stepped behind a desk with a detailed map of Detroit.

"Gentlemen, welcome." His voice was gruff and stern. "Welcome to my base of operations, and hopefully a home for you who are before me. You all received an invitation because you are all trying to kick out the bad guys. This means that all our interests align together very well. What I'm offering you individuals is a deal. The terms are clear: I provide each of you with a base, here, and all the resources you could need. In return, you will operate under my coordination. I don't plan to profit from this, and I promise that I will be unobtrusive when it comes to how you operate in the field. I understand you each already have your own style, and I wouldn't dare interfere. I just want to give each of you a goddamn fighting chance in this city. Are you in?"

The Voice leaned over the table, eyeing each of the heroes, waiting for questions or responses.

Grant looked all around the room. There was a prune with an eye patch staring down some costumed thugs. The luchador in the corner was especially unsettling. It didn't take long for the old man's pitch to entice Ricky. He did run around as "The Avenger" so this would hopefully springboard him into a closer position to the Chairmen.

"Sure, you don't leave much of a trail, but you have a pretty common MO. I was able to predict the next few times you'd strike and made sure to leave your invitation for you."

Ricky saw the Split Arrow's body tense up a bit. Those two were having an interesting exchange, but Grant couldn't contain himself. He quickly stood up to announce, "Alright! You got me convinced! I mean, you're an eccentric with a secret bunker that contracts vigilantes! Count me in!" The Avenger realized how overzealous he may have just appeared in front of the others and quietly sat back down out of embarrassment.

Carlos sat in the furthest corner of the room and listened to the voice as he spoke to them about fighting the crime and how he would supply them with resources. To Carlos this all seemed very good and helpful but his Vendetta was personal. It would take some time before he fully trusted any of these vigilantes. That didn't mean he wasn't willing to try, He would just be wary. The Voice finished giving his speech and it wasn't long before one of the other Costumed Vigilantes spoke up. Then they all started asking questions and talking. Carlos hadn't said a single word since he arrived he was to busy analyzing the rest of them and inspecting their surroundings from his spot in the corner. He continued to be silent and listen to the other heroes exchange words with the Voice and get aquainted.

Jane just frowns at this person who came in, the one she kept getting contacted by and just finally gave in to go to the meeting. The others in the room had on colorful, strange costume like things making Jane feel like she was the only adult in the room though the men looked older. She was the only girl at the moment and it was definitely a strange feeling with all these costumed guys. Sure she didn't want her city to be taken by the stupid gangs, but it didn't mean she wanted to dress up in a costume like the others. She was perfectly happy wearing what she always wore at night to get around.

"I stopped trying to kick out the bad guys as you put it a few years ago, you would know that if you knew me. Why would I want to get back involved with all the b@st@rds of the city?" Jane asks from where she was lounging back in her chair pushed away from the table. "I might consider if I have a real reason other than revenge," Jane says not really needing another reason but wanting to see if there was one.

Zachary was keeping to himself so far, but not because he was hesitant to interact with these people. Rather, he found this whole turn of events to be exciting. He simply wanted to learn more about who he would be working with, so he didn't want to interrupt until the others had said their introductions. For the most part they seemed like the type of antisocial person you would expect to moonlight as a vigilante. The big guy standing in the corner in particular exuded dark vibes. He liked this Avenger guy though. He hadn't expected anybody here to be so...enthusiastic. The smile on his face was almost as wide as the one painted on the welder's mask that hid it.

"I can think of one reason." he said, cutting in after Jane. "With this many of us, we might actually have a chance of success. We can do more than just chip away at these gangs. Because let's face it, none of us here could take on all of them alone and reasonably expect to make a big difference. Not that I wasn't having fun just being a minor annoyance." he finished with another mischievous grin that none of the others could see. He hadn't meant to say anything yet, but the thought of someone opting out of the team was mildly depressing to him. It would tarnish the mental image he had painted in his head of the amazing team of heroes that would "save the city." There would be parades. Stores would sell Daedalus action figures. It would be awesome.

Jane considers the words for a second, fiddling with one of the dog tags hanging from her neck. She shrugs her shoulders almost bored before leaning forward and speaking up again. "You said you'd provide anything we need... does that include cars?" Jane asks not able to hide her interest now that she figures it would be as good a chance as any. "Because if you know me like you seem to be saying you do, I like cars, and I need them if I'm to really tick off the powers," Jane says with a smile that she remembers her brothers calling unnerving, as if she were thinking about doing something illegal, or "fun" as she put it.

Jane had just recently been having difficulty with money anyway so she'd been forced to sell her beloved car as well as her old home and move into a small apartment that still wasn't furnished. Getting a place to live, a "base" as the voice put it, would be great, especially if it came with free wheels. Revenge was definitely a wonderful encouragement and reason to do anything, especially when the revenge is for the death of a loved one, but being able to stop all the crimes, maybe prevent some families from being divided and sad like Jane's own had been would definitely be worth it in her eyes.

Travis nodded, ‘A common MO.’ He smiled and balled up his fist at such a simple mistake. He sat back and almost as soon as his back hit the chair one of the other vigilantes jumped up and out of their own.

“Alright! You got me convince! I mean, you’re an eccentric with a secret bunker that contracts vigilantes! Count me in!”

He looked up at The Avenger and couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle. Kids got spunk. He noted. The Avenger sat back down after a silent second. Speaking out next was a girl at the farthest seat back and then a man wearing a welder’s mask with a painted on smiley face, he seemed to be the only one that sounded like he actually wanted this. And who’s to blame him, he made a good point, they couldn’t take on this city single-handedly.

It was clear to him now, they all had to help each other. Even if they didn’t want to, which happened to be exactly how Travis felt. “Well shit, if we’re all after the same thing,” he dragged off “I guess i’m in.”

The Voice stood there, stoic as each member of the group spoke their mind. Well, every member but the luchador. He was looking at quite an array of interesting characters and was quite surprised to see how everyone got on board easily.

"You said you'd provide anything we need... does that include cars? Because if you know me like you seem to be saying you do, I like cars, and I need them if I'm to really tick off the powers."

Of course the Voice knew she liked cars. She had gotten into some trouble with the Wheelers before. "I have a few vehicles at the group's disposal. And I can assure that one of them is a custom car I built with some wonderful toys for you, Soldier." And as each vigilante agreed to sign up, a grin found its way onto the old man's face. He wasn't sure if everyone would start out a team player, but he knew they were all devoted, particularly the quite man in the back. The luchador's eyes told the Voice everything he needed to know. A man who was in pain, and ready to fight back. A man that didn't want anyone to feel the same pain he felt.

"Alright everyone," the Voice started as he walked towards a set of monitors. "I see you're all on board. I suggest you get to the living quarters and familiarize yourselves with your new living space before hitting the streets. If anyone needs intel, I will be in this command room."

Jane considers the words before a small smile creeps on to her lips. "Okay, done. I'm in, but to make sure I don't die right away, what's the plan? We don't know who we're attacking first, and we don't know how. Each gang has their own strengths and weaknesses, so there has to be a plan, right?" Jane asks as she looks to the voice and stands. Name definitely didn't like to be sitting down for a long periods of time.

Jane hadn't really reacted much to being called soldier. Majority of people she helped just called her a secret soldier or something, the silent soldier maybe? Whatever it was, it was probably because of the dog tags and what looked to be military clothing. Name only wore military clothing because she felt that it might bring her closer to her family. Maybe if she did help these guys, her family wouldn't feel like she betrayed them as much.

Jane couldn't help but also be quite excited to look at that car. A custom car? With toys for her as the soldier person? The car probably has some features that Jane could never afford, but could totally wreck and ruin, but also fine tune and fix if she could understand the basics of their use and such. Jane was definitely in, even if it was for only two or three reasons, one being the car...
