XIt was a long silent ride back home. Tear after tear dripped down her cheeks into her lap. One might have assumed that it had rained on her at this point. She couldn't remember crying this hard immediately when she was told her mom had passed. At that time it just wouldn't sink in, but for some reason, this time, it felt more real than anything. Her father had to leave for work after dropping her off back at home, he said it was an emergency and he couldn't take the day off as much as he wanted. Melanie was far from shocked as this was the usual. The house was empty and cold. Nothing sounded better than a cozy hot chocolate and a whopping slice of pity pie.
The car ride to Clover diner was just the same. When she pulled into the parking lot, she couldn't even remember the trip there. It was as if she had simply teleported. Before leaving, she had shimmied on a loose black sweater to keep warm in the dreary weather. Stepping into the diner she was greeted with smiling faces which she could only ignore. Her eyes immediately trained on Jack in the back which started the waterworks once again. She knew how close Manny and Jack were, and she could only imagine how he was feeling right this moment.
As she walked up to their booth, she scooted into the seat to the right of Jack. She gave him a long look before resting her head on his shoulder. Any kind of warmth was of importance at this moment, as everything just felt chilling. She hoarsely whispered,"What do we do?" She desired hope, or maybe just a voice other than her dad's.
