Raven swore she was loosing her mind as she walked from the parking lot. The air was cool, fall had set in, taking summer by force. She had, of course, forgotten a jacket, as it had seemed she had forgotten everything this morning. Even the bright colored leaves surrounding her could not brighten her sour mood. Messenger bag in tow, she made her way toward campus, pulling her arms around her tightly, trying to hug in what warmth she could hold on to. She quickened her pace, knowing all to well that she was going to be late for class as it was.

As if she needed anything else to help ruin her day, as she approached the front steps of the building, a roaring rip sounded in the air. Her bag had split in two, everything spilling onto the cold pavement. Sketches went soaring in the wind, her text book was laying face down, spine in the air, pages crumpled against the ground. She huffed silently and began the chore of chasing down her artwork that had suddenly had the notion that it could fly.

Now a good fifteen minutes late for class, Raven, with her armload of crumpled papers made a brisk walk down the hallway to her mandatory music class. She loved music, but it wasn't something she had to study for her degree. She needed one mandatory class, and this was the only music class left by the time she registered.

'First day on campus.... starting on a good note here aren't you Raven?" she asked her self sarcastically. She made it to the room and opened the door.

She had obviously interrupted class, the teacher was giving her a healthy scowl. Those eyes were all the more terrifying behind the half moon spectacles she had fashioned on her long nose. The nest of burgundy locks did nothing but make the professor all the more intimidating.

"How nice of you to join us miss...?" She left it hanging for Raven to finish for her.

"Wilcox." She said.

"Wonderful, take your seat. Perhaps next time try to be in my classroom before class is halfway over." Raven gave her a sheepish grin and agreed, taking her seat in the back of the room.

'Great start Raven.' She mumbled to herself and attempted to get her sketches back in order.

Andrew jolted away, the piercing sound of his alarm clock beeping screaming through his room like the screams of a three year old during a temper tantrum. Covered in a cold sweat, he sat up and reached over, fingers fumbling numbly for buttons in the darkness unless his fingers found the snooze button. Glancing at the clock, he read the time, even though day to day, it never changed; 6:30am. Reaching up, he rubbed the heel of his palms into his eyes before, with a groan, turning himself in the bed and swinging his feet over the side of the bed and placing them against the bed. With a long sigh, he pulled himself to his feet. His everyday routine, except it would be followed with another day of year of studies for his Masters degree in Choral Pedagogy.

With slow, unsteady steps, he made his way to the other side of the room, leaning dramatically to one side, standing on one foot, to stab the lightswitch with his finger. His lightswitch being the kind that you pushed on either side to flip on and off and glowed orange in the dark, it was convenient. Wincing as the light blinded him momentarily, he hissed, eyes slowly opening several seconds later. Pulling on a pair of blue jogging shorts and a loose white shirt, he slowly woke himself up. After putting on some running shoes, he went out for his morning jog.

After returning from his jog around his landmarkless neighborhood, he took a shower, than prepared for his classes. He took a moment to look at himself in the mirror; pale, tired, and unsightly as always. His first class was fairly easy, just a general music education class - His one required one that he could breeze through. Having pulled on some black jeans and a blue collared shirt, he walked across his apartment living room and picked his shoulderbag off of the couch. He slipped on some simple - but nice looking - walking shoes on his way out the door, making his way towards campus.

As always, he was early and took a seat up front. Being far from the level the class was at, he simply opened a textbook for another class and began to study it. He barely enough noticed when everyone began to enter and when class started. As the professor began to speak, however, he set his pencil down. Suddenly, a late student entered the classroom. The girl was briefly addressed - irritably - by the professor before she went to take her seat at the back of the classroom. Then, class returned to normal, lectures, questions, the usual.

"Mr. Moronov," All the teachers here seemed to call you Ms., Mrs., or Mr. something. "In such a particular moving part, the notes of most of importance has what kind of behavior?" Andrew felt almost like be was being mocked - What kind of question was this for a man perusing his masters?

"The notes usually follow a harmonic line that lacks any apparent pattern, often containing accidentals, dynamic movements, dissonance, and or (and/or) more complicated intervals such as a Tri-Tone or diminished fifth." he answered with his very light accent, watching as the professor nodded and moved on with the lesson as planned.

It happened to every student, so it really wasn't a big deal unless someone completely flopped on it - Nothing out of the ordinary, really. Returning to his mindless memorizing of the teacher's monotonous lecture, his posture slumped in his chair; Hands in his lap, shoulders forward and down, head held low, and eyes half lidded like he would fall asleep if given the change - Which at the rate the lesson was going, was very possible.

Raven doodled on her notes as the lecture dragged on. She wasn't really paying attention. The flowers on the lined paper were getting more and more elaborate. There were a few notes hidden amongst the petals. She knew she should be paying attention. The last thing Raven needed was to be behind in her studies on top of moving stuff into her new house, working at her new job, and ripping her back pack.

Instead she got lost in the lines and curves of her flowers. She was grateful when the professor called on someone else. They chatted about something she had no clue about. He seemed really knowledgeable. She rolled her eyes to herself playfully.

'know-it-all' she joked with herself. She knew who she would be begging for help if she was having trouble. The man knew his stuff. She decided to pay attention after all and diligently took notes in her slightly damp notebook.

When class was over, she gathered her things the best she could, and despite being in the back of the class room she charged towards to door. She wasn't going to be late for her next class. She got to the door and tried to open it, arms full of books.

When she did, it was just no use. Everything spilled to the ground again. Part of her wanted to sit on the floor and have a tantrum and cry. Life was throwing her for a loop today. She went to her knees as the other students passed her by. She gathered her sketches again.

Andrew looked up at the ceiling for most of the remaining classtime. He was buried in his thoughts, wondering about this and that. His mind was often distracted, wandering aimlessly. It wasn't a kind of lost wandering, it was more curious. He was hungry for knowledge, he wanted to know. They said everything happened for a reason, but was that necessarily true? It was true it happened for a reason, but was it a logical reason or just a reason that made it simply be? There was no reason for volcanos to erupt, but the reason it erupts - at the same time - is from pressure inside the earth that finally causes magma to explode into the air in the form of an eruption.

He returned back to reality just in time to pack up his things and head to his next class. He waited for most of the students to leave, however, not wanting to be in the mess of people jumbled a the door, pushing and shoving to leave the room. Standing up next to the table, he bumped shoulders with a slightly older man who had probably been taking the class to get out of any other mandatory classes.

"Move," the man grunted irritably, probably upset that he had to get up and deal with people so early in the morning. Andrew didn't seem to react or make any sort of indication that he heard the man's rudeness and simply stared forward. "Dick," the man muttered, leaving the classroom. Andrew still didn't seem to care. In Andrew's mind, if he had woken up on the wrong side of the bed, he may have said those very things himself depending on the person he bumped into.

On his way out, he caught sight of a girl who had apparently dropped her things on the ground. Her expression suggested to him that this had just been a bad, bad start to her day. Kneeling down, he began to help her gather her things without a sound. He offered her a very light smile before looking back down to her things. Once he had gathered them up, he stood and gave her a very, very small bow before silently walking down the hall again. He really wasn't much for conversation until around lunch time to be honest - His social wiring just tended to short circuit any time before that. Sure he woke up early and whipped himself into running, going to class, and staying awake, but that didn't necessarily mean that he wasn't still waking up.

He helped her without a word, it was a bit strange. Her things however were quickly gathered and she was on her way. She couldn't get his face out of her mind. Something about it stuck with her, but she wasn't sure what. Maybe it was that he was the first person that had been nice to her since she had moved into this god forsaken town. Maybe it was just because he was pretty cute. Raven quickly shoved the thoughts away.

At least she had her psychology class next. She was comfortable and in her element. It would seem that with just one small act of kindness her day had quickly turned around. She knew what was going on, no more mumble jumbo about music that she didn't understand. She liked music in two ways, coming from her headphones, or lyrics on a page. Other than that Raven knew nothing about it.

At least now she was talking about disorders and parts of the brain. Things that made sense. She was dreading the music homework that awaited her when she was done here. After a good productive class, Raven made her way to the cafeteria. It was about lunch time and she had a good bit of time to kill before she had to be at her art class.

She bought an overpriced cheeseburger and tatertots and took a seat at one of the window tables. She tried to focus on her music book, attempting to get rid of her hardest homework first. It all looked like greek to her. Frustrated, she slammed her head into the book and groaned.

Andrew walked slowly to the student union - this time being the time he would've spent student teaching the zero hour high school chamber singers, but they had the day off today; An unused snow day to his understanding - to eat his brunch, since he had technically had a small bagel for breakfast. Oh, did he love bagels. Approaching the door, stopped for a moment to stare at nothing as he heard a pitch humming through the air. Identifying the pitch, he entered the lounge.

As usual when he came to the union, he went to the small store they had and got yet another bagel and a small packet of strawberry cream cheese and regular cream cheese. Spotting a quiet table in the corner, he set himself up there. Andrew placed his books on the table and slipped a pair of sound canceled headphones over his ears.

Suddenly, a face came to mind - the girl he had helped. Eyes narrowing, he rested his chin on his hand, elbow against the table. She seemed familiar almost, like he had seen her somewhere before. Although that would have been surprising, since he was rarely ever outside except for school. Jogging and the store, sure, but that was it and he never talked to anyone much except his neighbors. Was she, perhaps, his neighbor, and he has simply failed to have noticed?

Right as Raven was going to give up hope she looked across the sea of tables. There, as if a gift from the gods, was the man who helped her earlier. The know it all from class. She thought about it for a moment, was insulting her pride worth help on this infuriating homework?

She slammed her head into the table again, being a little melodramatic. Finally with a disgruntled groan, she grabbed her book and her sketches and headed over to the table. She wished she were a little more smooth. Talking to people she didn't know from Adam was not her strong point.

She stopped before she got to him, running fingers through her hair. Finally with one last deep breath to calm her nerves she approached the handsome young man.

"Excuse me?" He was wearing noise canceling headphones. She sighed, then gently tapped him on the shoulder.

"Excuse me, I hate to bother you, but you seem to know your stuff. Is there any way you would be interested in helping me with this?" She pointed to her book. Her voice was shaking and she was rambling, her nerves making themselves known.

Andrew spread all of the strawberry cream cheese on one half of the bagel and the regular cream cheese on the together, putting the two halves together once he was finished. As he began to eat, he looked down at his book again. On the page, he had written several things in red ink, numbers with other strange numbers and letters next to it. Then, out of his shoulderbag, he pulled over several papers.

Setting them down, they all had different handwritings and different names on them - Students papers. Taking out a red pen, he could read a paragraph and then grade a couple papers, going back and forth like this until he heard a mumble. He stiffened, flinching when he felt the tap on his shoulder. Slipping his headphones off, he stiffly turned his had and smiled lightly.

"Ah, good day." he said with his light accent. Hearing her request, he nodded, gesturing to the seat across from him. "Of course, please sit." he said, politely inviting her. His voice was extremely quiet and actually had quite a nice sound to it, gentle and clear. "How can i help?" he asked, setting his papers inside his book and closing it, placing it aside.

"Jeeze, I'm really sorry." She was rambling again as she took the seat His voice was nice and calm, unlike her uneven nervous string of nonsense. She opened her book to the part they were talking about in class. The questions at the bottom of the page were almost like a foreign language.

She should have just waited and took music appreciation next semester.

"None of this makes sense at all. In class, I didn't comprehend anything." She laughed nervously.

"Thanks by the way, for being so nice this morning."

"No problem, i'm happy to help." Andrew said, smiling gently as she took a seat across from him. Despite how friendly he was and how he seemed to give her his full attention, his gaze was strange - like he was looking not at her but staring right through her. As she pointed to the questions, he took his book out and opened it as well to the same page. There was a sheet of notebook paper slipped into the book on that page, the questions already finished.

"Well, these questions are asking the basics, mostly just review from other music classes - College and high school. Like this one is asking you to simply list and explain all of the musical markings in this excerpt and tell a bit why the composer might have used them. It's fairly basic; Accidentals, mezza de voce, tenudos, grace notes, and a modulation near the end." he explained, not seeming to compliment nor criticize Raven's lack of comprehension in the subject. As she thanked him though, he looked up almost as if surprised and nodded.

"You're very welcome," he said before setting his mechanical pencil down. "Not many people in this college are sympathetic or empathetic to help or listen to anyone here. The music, psychology, and other social sciences departments are usually the friendliest, but not by much. I suppose it's the prestige of the campus." he added with a shrug. At this point, he was no longer staring through her, actually looking at her.

She laughed as he explained about the people on campus. It was a sweet nice laugh, not a nervous chuckle like before.

"You are probably the first person to even talk to me since I moved here a week ago. It is just really nice to see a friendly face." She flashed him a toothy grin before sticking a tatertot in her mouth.

"So you are a music major I take it," She said after swallowing the tot. "What are you studying?" She was interested to learn more about the sweet, and very attractive (though she would not admit it even to herself) man.

"And further more, what are you doing stuck in a stupid starter class with me?" her tone was teasing and light.

Andrew's smile grew just a bit as she began to talk to him, enjoying the bit of conversation. He didn't get to converse with people as much as he used so a long time ago. So, having someone to just chat with for a moment was pretty nice! Perhaps he could recover his people skills by talking to her - She seemed kind enough.

"Ah, well, welcome to town. It isn't the most beautiful place in the world, but it's still pretty nice." he chuckled softly, glancing away briefly before looking up at her again. "And i concur, friendly faces are sadly uncommon here." he said, before taking the pause in conversation to also take a bite of his bagel. It was strangely nice to just sit and talk to someone - It wasn't often that he did so unless it was with his neighbor's kids.

"Yes," he laughed, answering her as she asked what he was studying. "I'm a music major. I'm a Music Education major and a Piano minor, finished a Violin minor while i was getting my Bachelors. As for the gen music class, i'm required to take a different mandatory music class each year. I took all of the hardest required courses for gen music majors in my last couple years, and this class was the only one left." " The young man leaned against the table a bit, ignoring the books on the table like they weren't even there, enjoying his talk with the kind newcomer.

"And what about you? I take it you're not studying music?" he guessed, somewhat hesitantly - Afraid she would actually end up being and music major and be offended.

She became more comfortable the more he became comfortable. She laughed and smiled and for the first time, she felt like maybe moving out here wasn't a mistake after all.

"No, obviously not," She chuckled, answering his question. "I'm majoring in child psychology, with a minor in Spanish. I figured I would be worth more if I could council in more than one language." about that time, her phone rang. She looked at Andrew with a sincere apologetic look.

"Could you hang on one second, this will only take a moment." Looking down at her caller ID, she noticed the block number and her heart began to race. "Don't go anywhere, I'm really enjoying talking with you." By the way she said it, you could tell she meant it.

Quickly Raven scuttled out of earshot.

"Hello?" She answered. The voice on the other end, although no surprise, made her heart race. She felt panicked.

"Hey there Ray." he responded.

"Who gave you my number?" She growled into the phone.

"You arn't happy to hear from me?" His voice was dark and masculine, it once used to draw her in and seduce her, now it just made her scared and angry.

"Goodbye Jared." She said and hung up the phone. She did her best to cover her feelings and sat back down with Andrew, attempting to forget all about it. She would change her number again tonight.

"Sorry about that," She said a little airily. "So how long have been going here?" She stuffed another tatertot in her mouth to cover her emotions, but she had lost her appetite.

Seeing that she seemed to not be uncomfortable around him, he smiled a bit more. Most people were unnerved at how he seemed to stare right through them or just didn't talk to him because he was a know-it-all or had heard rumors about him. As she told him that she was a child psychology major and spanish minor, he smiled. He had respect for child psychology majors - In his opinion, it was one of the best, kindest majors one could take. Science was great, and so was language - But things like medicine, pschology, music, and art truly helped people. It would help them, cure them, touch them, and center their lives.

As she dismissed herself to her phone, he nodded understandingly. Not liking to eavesdrop on people's conversations, he simply zoned out for a moment. However, once the tone of her voice changed, he immediately snapped back to reality, secretly listening. Looking down at his book, he read the cover several times, still listening to the conversation until she hung up. Glancing up, he shook his head as she apologized.

"Nothing to apologize for," He didn't want to ask, in case it was very personal, but he was curious. Perhaps it was an ex boyfriend? Or perhaps even a currently boyfriend? Stepfather? Whoever it was, she didn't seem to like them much at all - in fact, he'd go so far as to guess she had an extreme dislike of them. He shook his head once more out of nowhere, reaching up and grabbing some hairs and pulling twice, feeling the pain spread in his scalp. Then, he looked back to Raven, the curiosity now having settled on the backburner of his mind. He'd leave it for later.

"I've been here about seven years. I graduated early from my high school and came straight here," he said, shrugging. "I wanted to get out of my other town as quickly as i could, needed some new surroundings and some cleaner air." he said, picking up his pencil and spinning it around his thumb - A trick he did with pencils, pens, straws, etc. absentmindedly whenever they were within his reach. Perhaps he would ask her about her conversation a bit later, when he knew her a bit better - He didn't want to be too intrusive when they had just met.

She nodded as he told her about leaving his old town, completely understanding. She twirled her hair around her finger as she spoke.

"I can relate. I couldn't be in my old town any longer, it would have been to much. I just wanted a fresh start, a new beginning so to speak. I got my job at the daycare right before I moved. I have been so busy trying to get my school stuff to level out and working this new job, my whole apartment is still a mess. I haven't unpacked anything. I haven't even unpacked my pots and pans. I have been eating ramen for a week!" She giggled at the thought. She was very at ease with him. She was already smiling again, she wasn't sure if it was because he was so nice or if it was that gorgeous smile and deep eyes he had. But he made her feel relaxed and calm.

"You should come by, once I get things settled," She didn't know what she was saying as it tumbled out of her mouth. Suddenly she was blushing, her pale cheeks warming with the sensation.

"I mean... if you want to... It could be fun... You could teach me more about ..music?" She was grasping at straws trying not to make it appear like she was flirting with him, even though she was. Finally she just smiled and wore her blush as proudly as she could.

Andrew listened, leaning against the table. The girl wasn't just kind, she was interesting. As she started to talk about her apartment, he laughed lightly. She was funny as well. Perhaps he should try and meet her again sometime. That is, if she wanted to. He didn't want to be weird or anything. Yes, he wanted to be friends but he didn't wanna look desperate for friends or maybe he'd look like a stalker. He didn't want to look like a stalker, that'd be what he would want least! Really, just sometime to talk to would be- Wasn't he supposed to respond? He wondered how to respond. Should he speak? Should he nod?

"Yes," he laughed, awkwardly answering the statement about the ramen with an affirmative. It took him only a moment to notice, but when he did, he seemed to shrink back just a bit while his face reddened just the tiniest bit from embarrassment. At her offer, his smile fell and he looked pensive. Was she inviting him? He didn't know what he did, but whatever it was, he was glad he did it. His smiled returned and he nodded. "Sure, i'd be more than happy to teach you a thing or two." he replied with a dusting of a faint pink on his cheeks. "I could help you unpack too if you wanted me to." He looked down at the table for a moment, hesitating.

"Well, only if you would want me to. I don't want to intrude or anything." he added before somewhat sheepishly looking back up. Now that he thought about it, this was the first face to face conversation that he had successfully had with a woman that didn't end in an uncomfortable parting or the accusation of being some kind of creeper or sweaty pervert. If confused him really, he really wasn't interested in any form of womanizing, so why would someone call him a pervert? After realizing that he was sweating just a bit and a light pink dusting was on his cheeks as he continued on as if he was subtly desperate to see her again, he mentally slapped himself. Was it really so hard to differentiate between ridiculously nervous and perverted?

Raven was delighted when he suggested coming over to unpack. She hated being alone, and the days she had spent at her apartment had been the loneliest she had ever experienced.

"I would love that!" She exclaimed in response. She was immediately taken aback by her own enthusiasm. She probably looked like a totally desperate looser. She was just so glad to have some company.

"I mean..." she was so pink in the face she was sure he could see it. She could see the pink on his cheeks too. It was endearing that she could cause someone to blush. She knew she was pretty, she just never showed it. She wasn't confident.
"...you know, if you're not busy, I would love to have the help." She quickly wrote down her address on a slip of paper, as well as her phone number.

"Just so you know, my number might change in the next day or two. So don't think I'm ignoring you if I don't answer." She couldn't help but look into his eyes. She was being dumb. Someone as handsome and smart as him would never fall for a silly little girl like her. She was crushing on him abnormally fast. Maybe it was the musician thing. She had always had a thing for musicians.

Andrew fidgeted with the collar of his shirt, waiting for a negative or positive reaction. Seeing that it was positive, he let out a quiet sigh of relief. Maybe he wasn't as bad at talking to people as he had thought he was. He didn't spend with time with the 'normal' crowd growing up, so he supposed this was just a very successful learning experience. Smiling lightly, he reached up his sleeve a bit to scratch a nervous itch just above a small scar on the top side of his left, lower arm. It was one of many, so he didn't mind it at all.

"I'm usually free in the afternoon unless i have to conduct at a concert," He looked down at the table before glancing back up at the lovely girl sitting at the table with him. "I'm a student teacher," he added, quietly. "I can make it over anytime this week, if you're free one of those days..." he said, trailing off meekly as she handed him her address and her phone number. Perhaps fortune was smiling upon him now, giving him the company of a kind, lovely young woman. He listened to her as she spoke again, reaching into his backpack and pulling out a small cuecard/notecard to write his address and number on.

"Alright," he said, now more interested in the phone call more than ever. "Too many commercial callers?" he asked, trying not to push any further, even though he was incredibly curious. "Spam texts?" Okay, now he definitely had to back off. He had gotten lucky enough to befriend Raven, and didn't awnt to push her away by being nosy. He went quiet as he wrote his number and address at the top of the card and folded it in half after writing 'Andy M.' at the top of the card (The reverse to how most nicknames worked, only old friends called him 'Andrew'). After setting it on her side of the table, he went back to resting both of his elbows on the table and leaning towards her, body language showing interest and attention.

"Alright, i suppose i may drop by even later today - Depending on my homework situation. I'll just knock on the door and leave if it's a bad time." Andrew offered politely, glancing down and up like he had done several times now out of nervousness. Noticing that she seemed to become uncomfortable as he asked, he immediately made a note not to ask again until they were perhaps better acquainted.

"I understand." His bright blue eyes shifted up to a nearby clock as it chimed and he looked at her apologetically. "Sorry... I only have fifteen or so minutes left before i have to start walking to my class. It's across campus." he said, very sincerely apologetic. "I've been working on a report for a year now, since i started student teaching so i can't afford to be late to keep my record good at the end of the year. A good record and a good report will get be a masters with honors." he said, smiling lightly to himself, as if the thought of it made him happy inside. It was almost like a child muttering to himself.

Suddenly, he looked back up. "Ah, i'm sorry. When is your next class?" he asked, gesturing to her with a small, strangely conductor-like hand wave.

"I'm fine with eating ramen, really. I can bring over some stuffed pita if you'd like it?" he offered. "I usually just have some steak, provolone, lettuce, tomato, and hummus on white pita." he said, feeling somewhat awkward by the time he finished. As she said it was her last class of the day, he smiled. "This class is my second to last - The next i don't necessarily have to go to though, just piano practice seminar. I can swing by in two and a half hours, or something like that?" At her offer for her to walk him to class though, he blushed a tiny bit. He had never walked with anyone to class before - Not since he was small.

"Sure, i'd be more than happy to have some company," he said, smiling shyly down at the table as he reached up and scratched the back of his neck sheepishly. He didn't want to look uncomfortable at all, he was just happy that after so many years he had managed to actually befriend someone.
