a character in “Dragon Age: The Circle's End”, as played by Robinwing

Description

Name: Ariala Ursus, but is currently going by Ariel

Age: 34

Nationality: Tevinter

Race: Human

Organization: Circle of Magi, though in truth her loyalty lies with the Tevinter Imperium

Class: Mage

Rank: Ariala is currently just a mage, but she has her eye on higher things

Appearance:

Image

Equipment/Description: Ariala wears a set of simple robes, which she considers to be absolutely ghastly. She carries one of the simplest staffs she could get her hands on before she came to Orlais, and finally, she keeps a knife hidden on her person at all times. Just in case.

Specializations: Ariala is a blood mage, however, since she cannot use that as much as she'd like, she's mostly using her slightly weaker talent in creation magic.

History: Ariala was born to a magister's apprentice, after she had slept with a prostitute. Now, this didn't in fact mean much for Ariala or her mother's reputations, once it became apparent that the little girl had magical talent. However, her mother slowly became jealous of Ariala's power, which, once she made a deal with a pride demon, was even greater than her mother. The two became bitter rivals, with Ariala taking great pleasure in her speedy rise through the Imperium's social ranks. By 20, she'd received the title of a full magister, and gained her own kiss up of an apprentice. However, she found out when she was 25 that one part of her grand plan for her own future would never come to be. Ariala learned that she was barren, and that she would never have a child. Oh, she did not plan to have a happy family, she planned to have a youngling that she could control, and present before the Imperium as her perfect creation.

About a year ago, Ariala heard tell of the rising tensions around the Orlesian circle, tensions that could end in mage children with slitted throats. She also heard tell that the first enchanter of the very same circle held some ancient secrets of the elvhen magic craft. Ariala decided to investigate these claims, it would be a waste if someone didn't. She left her estate, slaves and other day to day business of being a magister to her apprentice, and set off for Orlais. She had long learned that getting into the circle would not be a matter of simply walking through the front gate and asking for a tour. Instead, she spent a few weeks carefully building up a small reputation as an apostate in a small village. Of course, these rumours of an apostate soon reached the ears of templars, whom found little trouble with catching Ariala. She span a tale of having spent her life travelling, crossing any number of borders with her family in the hopes of avoiding the circle. Of course, she made it known that she herself had never had any particular fear of becoming a circle mage, it was simply her family's fear on her behalf that kept her from such a life. The templars that found her bought it.

Ever since, Ariala has been gathering information on various things, the First Enchanter, his information, and whatever tidbits she can find about how the great game may come to effect her fellow mages. She's also, on the side, been building a rapport with the youngest members of the circle. After all, coming home with new magical secrets and a small passenger would certainly make this one of her most fruitful endeavours...

So begins...

Dirth smiled, a smile that people might just refer to as Grandfatherly. "Good. I was planning on doing that all along." His hand came up, patting the Knight Commander on the shoulder. "Honestly though, you might consider relaxing. You seem as though you're 'Bearly' handling the stress of your job." Before the Orlesian could respond, the First Enchanter was already on his merry way, making his way towards the second floor staircase.

(And so it begins! Hope you enjoyed the Intro, it was supposed to be one big post but we experienced a few hiccups)

"Rusty." Said a far away voice. Rusty didn't pay it any attention, too fascinated by what was outside the window. The prickling in her senses told her that, somewhere out of sight, a storm was brewing. She wondered whether it would hit later today or tomorrow.
"Rusty." Came the voice again. Rusty shifted her chin so that it was resting on her hand more comfortably, and sighed a little. She liked thunderstorms, but most of the younger apprentices didn't, so she mentally started coming up with some funny jokes that she could tell them. She snickered a little as a particularly good pun crossed her mind.
"Rusty!" Rusty finally jumped and turned her eyes forward. She grinned sheepishly up at the Enchanter who was teaching the apprentices about something or other. Rusty couldn't remember. All the other apprentices had turned their heads to look at her, and some were starting to snigger.
"If you're finding this easy enough to stare out of the window instead of listen, perhaps you can tell the rest of us how to properly cast this spell?" The Enchanter turned the book she had been reading from and pointed at the name of a spell. Rusty gulped a little behind her strained grin.

Ariala stood by a window, off to the side to make it more difficult for the templars outside to notice her presence. Granted, she doubted if they could see her, they'd have questioned it much, given that she wasn't the only mage standing at these windows. It seemed that those with nothing better to do were liable to take up a position here, with a few mages watching the fights with interest, some teenage girls giggling amongst themselves, and one or two younger children that had tagged along with someone else. Ariala smiled at them, before returning her attention to the training ground. She had an inkling that the Knight Commander was suspicious of her, and Ariala had to ascertain what the other woman knew. She looked down at her foe, with her pride demon whispering at the back of her mind. She was an Imperial Magister, and this woman was nothing against that. However, Ariala knew her priorities. Elf's secrets, child, then she could kill every templar in this miserable pile of rubble. And burn these hideous robes.

Flicking to another page, the Elf listened as the enchanter explained himself, looking up at the mention of one of his areas of expertise. Entropy and Force magic, was it?

“Hmm. You pose an interesting question.” He even decided to set his book aside for the moment, his mind suddenly sparked by the Enchanters mission. “The School of Force works exceedingly well with the two sister Schools of Energy. Mages experienced in Force Magic can use its unique properties to augment spells of either Primal or Spirit origin. For example, a Fireball, which on its own can cause considerable damage, suddenly has enough force behind it to match certain Qunari technologies.”

The First Enchanter paced in front of the enchanter, continuing his explanation. “Furthermore, it can even be used on oneself to take a far worse beating than if one went without.” He stopped himself, realizing he was about to begin rambling and shook his head, remembering that the Enchanter a question that needed answering. “However, in the past, it has been believed that Force magic does not mix well with the Schools of Matter. There is just very little potential in mixing the two.” At first, it might have sounded discouraging, as though he was attempting dissuade the boy from pursuing the path he was on.

But then, Dirth smiled. “However, one never knows what secrets magic might hold. If you believe that there is merit for such experimentation… Then you should attempt your experimentations. Safely, though, if you don’t mind. I don’t think the Templars would be very happy if they woke up to find a Magical Cloud filling the whole of the Fortress, don’t you agree?” A small mirth filled chuckle slipped past his lips. It seemed that Enchanter Arran had more questions in store, however, as he spoke only a moment later.

“Sir, I’ve also been hearing a great deal about a particular Hedge Mage. Who exactly is this person? Is he just another person with mage potential who wasn't found young?”

The elder mage looked a bit perplexed, before realizing that his Colleague must have heard the argument between himself and the Knight Commander. “Ah… I see. It’s nothing to be worried about, Arran. Only another apostate who seems to have gained a hold on her powers without our assistance. The Knight Commander is only being overly paranoid, as is to be expected of her. It is her job, after all.” A thought crossed his mind, and he quickly added on to his words.

“In fact, her name is Ariel. I’m sure she’s feeling lonely, surrounded by unfamiliar mages and all these glaring Templars. I’m sure she could do with a Friend. Perhaps, if you find time between your experiments, you should introduce yourself, befriend her if you can.”

Obviously, there was more to it than was on the surface, but First Enchanter Dirth wouldn’t tell Arran everything. Dirth had suspicions as well, but he was really only taking precautions as one could never know exactly what had happened over the course of an apostate’s life. In any case, he was sure it was nothing, and that it would only go as far for Ariel to be watched for a few weeks, perhaps a month.

Ariala felt a tug on her skirt. She turned and looked down at a girl child, no older than 7, and smiled. She noted that the child had blonde hair, like spun gold, though her face was dotted with somewhat unsightly freckles.
"Who're you?" The little girl asked. Some other children were standing further back, whispering amongst themselves about their friend going up to the lady they'd never met. Ariala cast a carefully non-threatening glance at them, and noted two human boys and an elf boy. She returned her attention to the little one at her feet, and gave herself a quick reminder that she couldn't give her true name.
"I am Ariel. And you are..?" She replied.
"I'm Hilda. My friends are--" But little Hilda never got far enough to list their names, because the little elf boy leapt forward to stop her. Her glared at Ariala with a suspicion none of her slaves in Tevinter would have dared turn on a Magister. He took Hilda's hand and marched away with her, the two human boys in tow. Well, Ariala had certainly expected suspicion from the Templars, even some from the older mages, but she'd not really foreseen any children casting such looks at her. No matter, so long as the boy didn't spread his suspicions.

Rusty sighed from her new position standing off to the side in the library. After answering the Enchanter's question wrong, she'd been instructed to take herself off to some corner of the library and wait. After the lesson was finished, she was to receive the book the Enchanter had been using to teach them, and copy out three pages from it five times. Needless to say, Rusty wasn't looking forward to it. Until the lesson was over, Rusty was stuck in the position she'd been placed, carefully away from any windows or particularly chatty mages that could have made the wait anything less than agonising. In a vain hope to even slightly alleviate the boredom, Rusty reached up and started twisting some of her curls into a thin braid.

Moving swiftly through the shadows of the halls ways, Ciera's eyes scanned through each room she passed, looking for the new mages face. The knight commander had not given her any image or definition of the new Mage but Ciea doubted she would be hard to spot considering it wasn't often that a completely new Mage showed up.

Pausing briefly at one of the doors, Ciera turned to glance into the room. A women seemed to be standing by a window and watching as a group of young children walked away from her, a young boy pulling on a young girls hand. Ciera didn't kiss the suspicious looks that were sent the women's way and immediately took her to be the new Mage Ariel.

Ciera leaned slightly against the door frame as she watched the scene and problem that was presented to her. The knight commander had ordered her to watch the new Mage though she had not been specific on bounties or requirements which left most of the decisions in Ciera's own hands.

This wasn't going to be easy, especially considering the fact that the knight commander hadn't given her any back story. Smiling briefly behind her head mask she decide that meant she had free range over the mission and it didn't matter how she got the information as long as the knight commander wasn't tied to it.

She would need to talk to the first enchanter and ask for permission if she may be made a personal guard. She had no doubt the first enchanter would see her as no more than a guard considering her wasn't one of the higher that she had been required to reveal herself to.

Moving away from the doorway, she gave the Mage one last look before vanishing back into the shadows and making her way to the upper levels, looking through the studies and room where the first enchanter might be and stopping as she came to the library and found him with a young man.

Moving forward she watched them patiently from the sidelines and only stepped forward when she sensed the pause in the conversation. "First Enchanter. The Templar Captain in charge of he the guards here at the tower have shown concern towards the new Mage and is requesting she be placed with a personal guard, if only for the first few weeks. I have been ordered to ask you permission for this position." She asked in a clear voice as she came forward, bowing her head to the man and waiting his reply, settling her brown eyes on him and praying her would agree or else she would have to do this the harder way.

Ciera watched as an older male approached, bowing her head and ducking away into the shadows once again. She had no desire to intrude on the first enchanters time and she had a task to complete. Moving through the corridors silently, she read counted her steps to the room where she had last seen the new Mage.

Approaching the room, she entered and moved silently towards the slightly older women, bowing her head and clearing her voice to make her presence know to the other women. "Madam. My name is Ciera, and I have been assigned to be with you for your first few weeks at the tower. I hope this does not cause you any problems Madam." She said, head still bowed slightly and hands clasp before her though she looked directly into the other women's eyes. Her tone was polite and respectful of the women in front of her.

Despite what many other Templars might believe, Ciera didn't share these views and simply saw the women before her as such, a women she had been assigned to watch. She had no fear of her 'magic' or how dangerous she could be. She was not careless but she did not hate or fear this new Mage.

Ariala turned at the voice of another woman. Hmm, being singled out to watch already? Problematic, but nothing she hadn't foreseen. Ariala noted that this templar was speaking to her with less venom than many of the templars Ariala had met in this country, and did not seem to fear her.
"I don't see any problem." Ariala responded. "Might I ask why?" If Ariala knew what had prompted the suspicion, perhaps she could make an effort to hide it, and eventually she would be accepted as a fact of life by the denizens of the Circle. She looked at the templar before her, and thought about her goals. Elf's secrets, Great Game... Hmm, she knew she couldn't easily leave the Circle now that she was in. Perhaps this watching would prove a blessing. Easy access to gossip and people from outside the Circle's walls, if she played her cards right.

Rusty shifted, restlessly. She wondered if the Enchanter would notice her moving from her spot. She was surprised when a quick glance revealed that the Enchanter had moved, and now had her back to Rusty. Her mouth broke out into a smile, and she started looking for an expedient escape route. She looked a short ways to her right and saw a wheeled ladder up to the top of the bookcases. Her movement alerted some of the apprentices off to the side, but she put a finger to her smiling lips and mimed a stop signal at them. She went over to the ladder and scuttled up to the top of the bookcase. She reached up and grabbed the far edge of the bookcase to help her swing her leg up the final precipice.

A moment later, she was comfortably sat on top of the bookcase. However, by now she had made enough of a spectacle that mages that weren't involved in the class were starting to murmur and giggle, as well as the other apprentices. This prompted the Enchanter to turn and check where Rusty had been. The older woman turned a brilliant shade of puce when she realised where Rusty had gone.
"RUSTY REED YOU COME DOWN FROM THERE RIGHT NOW!" She bellowed, as she stood and started storming over. This prompted the apprentices to release their bitten in laughter, as Rusty, thinking quickly, kicked the wheeled ladder so that it rolled to the far side of the bookcase. She got her feet under her and stood up, her arms outstretched to help herself balance until she was completely upright. She grinned down at the Enchanter as the older woman continued to shout, halving her lecture between Rusty and the cacophony of laughter that the lesson had devolved to.
