Ariana (Ri) Davis

and Zahar.

0 · 229 views · located in Valdonia

a character in “Dragon Riders of Valdonia”, as played by hxcdreamer

Description

Character Skeleton

Name: Ariana (Ri)
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Ability: Electricity
Occupation: Dragon Grooming in a shop off the main street of Cadence City. She was hired because of her incredible dragon armor forging skills, but because of a lack of danger has had to settle for cosmetic or physical dragon grooming, like sharpening a dull horn or shining scales. She mostly deals with the wealthy riders and their stuck up dragons.

Appearance
Eyes: Ice blue.
Hair: Simple brown, shoulder length. Parted down the middle and frames her face in the front on the way down.
Height: 5'4"
Weight: 140. She's somewhat thick boned and far from skin and bones, but maintains a healthy weight. Muscular, especially in her arms, but it doesn't show much.
Markings: Various white scars on her hands from cutting herself or smashing them at work.

Clothes + Gear
Top: Simple black tee shirt.
Bottoms: The equivalent of wrangler jeans, but they fit her well. When she's riding, she wears black full-length leather chaps.
Accessories: Simple silver stud earrings.
Weapons: A war hammer. She created it for fun and practices frequently, but hasn't ever needed to use it in battle. She lives for the day she gets to.

Personality

Definitely a tomboy. She's not afraid to get down and dirty or take risks. She doesn't understand why anyone would want to go through pain for beauty, but has a better understanding of it because of her job. Regardless, she still chooses not to wear any makeup. She cuts her own hair, as well. She's strong willed and sticks to her beliefs and opinions like glue. She's stubborn as a mule. She doesn't like to be told no to something she wants. She's prone to temper tantrums and fist fights when she does get angry. All that being said, it's clear she has an immature side, but she's damn loyal to the ones she cares about and gives her heart out freely. She loves to know she made someone's day easier and her favorite thing to see is someone who doesn't smile often smile. She's generally a nice person, until you do something she doesn't like or approve of!

History
Born and raised in Cadence city to only her father (mother died at the hands of the desert nomads when she was young), she grew up free roaming pretty much wherever she liked. She was an only child and got into a lot of mischief. Though she attended dragon races and sport events often and grew up to watch her friends happily accept their new dragon companions, she never had any desire to own a dragon. Unfortunately, the cousin she never knew she had recently passed at the young age of 28 and left Ri to inherit her 5 year old dragon. In the letter that was sent to her stated that if she didn't adopt the dragon to set it free on the entire other side of the mainland continent. Ri wasn't willing to make that journey, and thus, unwillingly accepted her dragon. Since then, they've bonded... uniquely.

Dragon Skeleton

Name: Zahar
Age: 6
Gender: Male
Ability: Fire
Size: Medium. 13 feet long, snout to tail tail. From shoulder to thigh, he's 6 feet long. 5 feet tall at the shoulder. 2 and a half foot shoulder width for riding.

Appearance
Eyes: Bright orange, cat-slit black pupil.
Color(s): Green with brown on the rougher patches of his body (head, shoulders, etc). Google images of an iguana for coloring.
Description of their general appearance: Triangle scale plates, like that of a snake's, but they're rather small even at the largest parts of his body. He has wings that double as his front legs. He's got enough talon "fingers" at the elbow of the wing to grasp objects about the width of a human arm, or to dig into trees or rocks to climb. His talons are black, and he's got two 6 inch black horns that stem from his angular brow bones. His mouth is also like that of an iguana, but of course, much sharper 2 inch white teeth in there. On the underside of his jaw in his throat is a small pouch that causes a bit of loose skin on the underside of his neck; this is simply where he draws fire from. His tail is long and skinny, good for balancing, holding on, or whipping.
Zahar comes from the rainforests of the main continent, which is why Ri doesn't want to travel really far into dangerous territory just to set him free.

So begins...

Ri sat on the edge of a cliff that dropped down two hundred feet below to a rocky ocean shore. The rhythm of the waves crashing on the stone beach below was soothing to the mind after a long day of dealing with rich folk and their spoiled dragons. All that was seen of the ocean was the whitecaps crashing--the rest of the ocean seemed like a black mass in the night. She sat alone, feet dangling dangerously off the edge. Her hands resting on the soft grass a little bit behind her so she could lean back and watch the game.

She couldn't remember what this sport was called. All she knew was that it involved throwing a ball through hoops to a partner who eventually shoots into a goal, all of which was suspended hundreds of feet above the ground and played on dragonback. Lucky for those unfortunate enough to fall off, surrounding the stadium was a force field that regularly pulsed white-blue lines throughout its clear walls. The game was intense, probably professional, and probably expensive to get into. Ri didn't see the point of paying so much money when she could sit here on the cliffside from a little farther away and watch.

Her ears caught the familiar sound of wings pulling and pushing the air from behind her. She didn't turn to look, she knew who it was. She listened as Zahar landed, pushing her back slightly against the blast of wind from his landing. It's about time you got here. I missed two shots because my eyes aren't as good as yours. Lucky for her, the scoreboard was visible to her from where she sat.
Zahar crawled up close to her like that of a bat, seeing as his wings were also his front arms. He sat up straight next to Ri, his wings close to his side as his vibrant orange eyes examined the field. You will live. A quiet pause went by. Despite how their beginning had been, Ri had begun to enjoy Zahar's company. Especially in the quiet moments like this. He broke the silence when he said, There are many riders adventuring within the woods for some unknown reason. I flew over them but did not stop in. I knew you would be here.
Ri breathed in calmly. There's no better way to spend an evening after work, she said solidly, like it was fact. One of the players on the team of her choosing scored a shot and the shouts and claps within the stadium could be heard from the cliff side. Ri smiled to the outburst of excitement. Zahar sat like a stone carving, examining the game quietly along with her.

It seems the game is ending, Zahar said, turning his horned head just slightly to look at Ri more directly. Sitting up like he was, he towered over Ri by about two feet or so. What now?

Ri's eyes were fixed on the stadium. The game was indeed ending; there were only a few more minutes left in game time according to the large scoreboard. Normally by now the crowd's enthusiasm would be dying down but tonight seemed too good a game, and they only got louder with each acquired point. She was thinking to herself. A masterful plan to keep the night young was brewing in her mind. She felt Zahar mentally sigh exasperatedly. Outwardly, he huffed through his nose and gray smoke blew out.
Why don't you sleep like the rest of your kind at this hour?
Ri laughed quietly as she stood up and away from the cliff's daunting edge. The waves' kept up their crashing rhythm far below. Why don't you act your age instead of acting so old? She replied. Zahar knew the drill and brought his wings down to the ground, assuming a bat like position again. He was saddleless, but it was not a problem for Ri. No matter where she went, she wore full length black leather chaps over her jeans. Zahar didn't like anything being strapped onto him and Ri preferred to ride bareback, so it worked for the two. Ri mounted between his shoulders and neck and held on to one of the larger black spikes of his neck.
Zahar crawled with the speed and rhythm of an iguana or other ground-lying reptile as he raced towards the edge of the cliff. He pushed off of the cliff with his back legs and spread his wings. There wasn't a current he could ride, so Ri held on tightly and squeezed her legs closer to his neck to stay on while he dove towards the depths of the ocean. Ri couldn't hold on any tighter than she was now but their speed continued to increase. The wind whipped Ri's hair behind her and the back of her shirt rippled like a flag over her skin. The ocean was coming up fast.
Zahar, when-
After a year of being together, you still don't trust me. Zahar fell freely for a short moment longer before unfolding his wings. They caught him like a parachute, steadying his altitude about 30 feet over the ocean but hardly slowing his speed. The water below them looked like oil with sea-foam. Ri didn't like water much and it made her uncomfortable, but her grip loosened a bit now that they were out of the dive. The air smelled very salty and like brine and tangled her hair a bit.
Well don't get mad at me! We hardly ever fly.
You hardly ever fly. After all this time, I have never let anyone harm you. Why would I put you in danger, myself?
Ri frowned, realizing she couldn't argue his point. Just get me to the stadium without any more stunts. I'm about to pull some of my own and I don't need yours.

Zahar flew closely to the ocean surface for most of the ride, until the glowing sphere began to light the ocean below it. Ri's grip tightened again as his wings fought against the air while he entered a vertical climb. Looking straight ahead, the white-blue glow of the sphere blinded Ri from the stars beyond it. The darkness of the night dulled Zahar's green coloring but the light of the sphere on his belly bathed him, and Ri in white. Her pale skin looked even more washed out than usual, and her eyes even brighter, almost glowing.

In order to keep a low profile, Zahar began to loop backwards as they neared the platform, then twisted to climb higher into the sky. Ri's eyes searched for the platform on the side of the building. After the loop and twist, it took a minute to find it, but sure enough, it was there. But unprotected. Or rather, its protection was dismissed. Zahar's mind was in sync to Ri's and he could get the same information through her, just as she could about his flying. A low grumble built in his chest. It seems someone had the same idea as you, tonight. I don't think you should go. The human took down three more of his own. He's dangerous and you couldn't protect yourself.
Bullshit. Land, she ordered. Zahar snorted smoke and jerked into a twist, making Ri slip off of his neck a tiny bit. Irritated, she jerked herself back into place and held on tighter as he made his way back to the platform. When he approached, Zahar's large wings expanded to their fullest and he openly hissed in the face of the stranger near the sphere. He ended the hiss with a snap of his jaws as his back feet touched down. His tail dangled long below the platform, but whipped audibly through the air.
"Knock it off!" Ri told him, sliding down his back. Her feet touched the ground and she ducked under his right wing to stand in front of Zahar. His chest had swelled, giving him an even larger appearance. Without even thinking, she slapped his expanded chest. A deep but quiet growl built in his throat. I won't be far. Let him know. With that, he took flight.

Ri lifted her shoulders and sighed, shaking her head. "Sorry. He's protective." Looking at the unconscious bodies around her, the corners of her mouth lifted in a grin. "Not bad. I'm guessing we're both here on this platform for the same reason then? I can get us through the sphere and door if you don't try anything stupid." Oddly, she wasn't worried about it. It was likely due to an overconfidence in her element abilities, but she watched him carefully anyway.

Ri relaxed furthermore as the man pulled his face mask down and introduced himself. The first thing she noticed about him was the way his golden eyes seemed to glow just a bit from within his own shadow. The next was a contagious smile that she caught along with him. She cleared her throat and blanked her expression, trying to take on a more independent and serious position. She could sense Zahar rolling his eyes in the back of her mind so she cut off their mental link in a flicker of irritation.

"I'm Ri," she introduced. "The dragon's name is Zahar, but hopefully you won't have to meet him again. He's a grouch." Ri watched Talon for a moment, trying to finally determine whether she was really safe or not. She didn't feel a vibe of danger from him, but then again there were passed out bodies on the ground all around her. She stepped over one of the bodies and walked to the right edge of the platform near the door, crouching down.
"It's nice to meet you too. You're right, the spheres can be a pain. I just choose to fry them long enough to get by."

The vibrating hum of the sphere rang in Ri's left ear, louder every time it pulsed white. One of the twelve black electrical boxes around the stadium that produced the energy sphere was just out of reach. No matter, she thought. Heat began to flash and feel like it was bouncing within her arm as her power charged. The center of her palm began to glow white with a pale yellow undertone. Fighting to keep her hand steady, she unleashed the heat within her right arm and bolts of electricity began to shoot out. At first the lightning struck chaotically, sounding like the crack of a whip each time one bolt died out in the air. Controlling the bolts, she targeted the black box and soon after, you could hear the frying of the contents inside. Smoke began to rise from the box and the sphere faltered, leaving a forty foot radius empty of the energy. The smoke was already dying down when she withdrew her charge and faced Talon.
"Can you get the door?" she asked quickly. The box wouldn't be down long, but he would have enough time to get through the lock if he knew how.

Feeling Zahar trying to probe her mind, she opened up the link to her mind again. She didn't say anything as he searched her most recent memories. She felt that he was aggravated but said nothing also, probably because she was right about the scenario being safe enough. If I'm to trust him, he should trust me too, she thought. Zahar could hear it but said nothing in return. A wise decision, if you were to ask Ri.

Ri nodded along to his approval. She'd discovered the little trick when she had to break into her own work place after forgetting something important, which is protected by an energy door as well. When she got frustrated, she zapped the hell out of the door long enough for it to stay unlocked for a full two minutes while she went in and shut off the main power and heater she'd forgotten about.

She watched him kneel down and begin to prod the metal lock with a pick. His stare into his work was intense with eyes like those, one that would perhaps intimidate even Ri if he ever looked at her that way. Of course, she probably didn't have to worry about that. She came to realize that she may not have shocked the power box enough, or they changed to a better system, when the sphere began to crawl over the corner of the door again. Ri bit her lip, beginning to feel incompetent. That was the worst feeling in the world to her. Being so independent and self-sufficient, she never wanted to be useless when she did help somebody else. But she didn't have time to think about that further. As the sphere began to creep in closer, she felt an arm wrap around her waist and lead her through the door. Her feet stepped quickly and lightly, trying not to fall over as she rushed to follow Talon's guiding.

The blue energy vacuumed to a close with a vibrating hum, white lines spider-webbing out from the closing point until it was back to normal. Her nerves were a little on edge with the close call, but she took a breath to calm them.
"Phew, that was a close call. Dang thing regenerates quicker than I thought..."
"No kidding. I wasn't expecting that either," she agreed. She looked up to find he had glanced down at her and she suddenly realized they were standing very closely. He seemed to realize it at the same time. "Oh! Excuse me, didn't mean to get fresh there."

Ri couldn't help it, an amused grin broke free across her face when he quickly pulled away and rubbed the back of his head. It took a lot to embarrass her, so she found it cute to see him squirm just a little.
"No worries, I think I'll live," she said with a smile. She looked down at the floor and let her smile fade as she looked back up, still amused. He proceeded to compliment her on her power and thank her.
"Any time," she said. "I think we both got in faster than we would have, so it worked out. Where did you learn to pick locks? That must be a good talent to have," she pondered, thinking of the possibilities. She let him answer and then said, "So what are you planning here? Why are you breaking in?" She realized he might not feel comfortable answering, but Ri preferred to ask and be told no than to just wonder. Even if she would poke around for an answer afterwards.
