Description

Estelle Amorica: The Emperorā€™s Alchemist
Image
"I have stared into the eyes of eternity, and found the strength to look away."

The Profile

Name: Estelle Amorica

Nickname: Stella

Title: The Emperorā€™s Alchemist

Species: Ravein (appears human due to surgical and bioalchemical manipulation).

Race: Avian

Visual Age: Estelle appears to be around twenty-five years of age.

Factual Age: Thatā€™s because she is.

Gender: Female

Sexual Orientation: Sheā€™s not really sure.

Role: Aboard the ship, sheā€™s simply the doctor. Before that, she was quite a bit more.

Class: Mage

Specialization: Alchemist

Theme Song: ā€œYou Donā€™t See Me.ā€

The Diagnostics

Hair: Strawberry-blond (more on the side of strawberry), though occasionally a tawny or white feather will show up. These are immediately plucked mercilessly.

Facial Hair: None

Eyes: Dark Hazel

Eye Brows: Match her hair.

Ears: Rounded, rather small; the edges show the faintest evidence of scarring.

Nose: Upturned at the end, small.

Lips: Pale, somewhat thin.

Build: Very slight, she gives the impression that a strong enough gust might carry her off against her will.

Skin Tone: Quite pale; itā€™s not impossible to see the tracery of her veins beneath her skin in places.

Height: 4ā€™11ā€

Weight: 70lbs- her bones are hollow.

Voice: Melodic and soft, capable of a rather interesting (read: bizarre) range though.

Handed: Right.

Body Markings: Concealed beneath her clothes, Estelle has a variety of tattoos. The largest stretches from one wrist, up and across her shoulderblades, then down her other arm. Also has circles on her palms as well as her back and other ones engraved into her automail legs; every one of them is a transmutation circle or array of some kind.

Scar Tissue: Two vertical scars of about five inches long, right down her shoulderblades.

Unique Body Features: Both of Estelleā€™s avian-like legs have been surgically amputated and replaced with automail limbs from the knee down, the metal seamlessly melded alchemically with her flesh.

The Dossier

Image
Quirks: Estelle sings frequently to herself as she goes about her business, at least if she thinks nobodyā€™s around. She wouldnā€™t want to annoy anyone, after all. She also has a habit of being rather tactile, intent on exploring her surroundings and determining the material compositions of as many things as possible. Her curiosity is almost childlike, actually.

Virtue/Creed: ā€œMen were not meant to have the power of gods.ā€

Motivation: Estelle flees her captivity and to protect a secret; anything else is secondary to her desire to remain as far from the Emperorā€™s grasp as possible.

Goal: To find and then destroy the secrets of the Shroud.

Fear: Nothing frightens Stella more than the prospect of imprisonment. There are some things that the spirit can only endure for so long- and she has had her fill of cages.

Likes
  1. The smell and feel of the open air.
  2. Discovering now things and creative solutions.
  3. Sweet foods.
  4. People with interesting stories to tell.
  5. Feeling useful or needed in some way.

Dislikes
  1. Tense situations or ones where people are yelling.
  2. Anything that feels like a prison or a cage, and tight spaces generally.
  3. Being disliked.
  4. The sound of a gun being fired.
  5. Extravagant courtly mannerisms.

Strengths: Stella is a highly-gifted alchemist, and if absolutely necessary, a very agile individual. Her mechanized legs and light construction give her jumping abilities beyond the norm, as well as a convenient speed boost which she can use to get clear of uncomfortably close-quartered situations. Her tattooed array is actually a highly complex bioalchemical formula capable of healing her of virtually any injury if activated by either herself or another alchemist with the intent to do so. Several other transmutations are also inscribed in various locations on her back, arms, or legs, so she can get creative and act without circles if she needs to.

Weaknesses: Having hollow bones makes them extremely susceptible to breaking. Additionally, having spent her entire life within a relatively small area, she is lacking knowledge of much of the world, and consequently many rudimentary skills necessary for life aboard a ship. Sheā€™s highly dependent on other people for guidance, and rarely decides to do something on her own for fear of causing problems or offense. It's downright pathetic how difficult it is for her to make a major decision on her own. In fact, she's made only one in her entire lifetime.

Physical Description: Rail-thin and of a delicate construction, she gives the impression of extreme breakability, as though speaking too loud might shatter something. Sheā€™s a bit hardier than she looks, but not a whole lot; it sort of comes with the territory of being a creature who was intended to fly under her own power. Of course, this is not immediately obvious; Estelle has no visible traits of her ravein heritage. Though sized as the smallest of the avians tend to be, she is without wings, bird-feet, or feathers. In fact, she appears entirely human, save for the two mechanical legs, but these are most often hidden by footwear anyway.

Reddish hair falls to her shoulders if not restrained, straight, clean, and well-cared for if the sheen is any indication. There should by all rights be some plumage mixed in there, but sheā€™s been forced by circumstance to avoid allowing it to. A sharp mind and a glance at the homemade red-and-white fletching on her arrows might give you an idea of what it would look like. She has an open, friendly face, all the more effective as a mask because it doesnā€™t resemble one in the slightest. Her body language is demure; she tucks herself into small places and doesnā€™t encroach on the space of others-for the most part.

Overall sheā€™s neat, clean, and rather pleasant-seeming, all things considered. Due to her fondness for scented soaps, she also tends to smell like flowers. Beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder alone, but Estelle has never turned heads that she was aware of. She's symmetrical, neat, and generally wearing a friendly face, but there are no qualities of the sultry or the ethereal or the sort of feminine characteristics that might make one an artist's muse, but plain isn't really a word that fits someone with two metal legs and a dozen intricate tattoos, is it? It's never occurred to her that this matters much.

Personality Description: Estelle is a people-pleaser to the core. The byproduct, perhaps, of an upbringing where oneā€™s fortune is entirely dependent on the opinions of others, she places much more stock in these than she does her own. In doing so, she has become quite sensitive to moods and dispositions, with an almost-instinctive feel for what people are like or what will set them off. These things, she systematically avoids. In a sense, then, she is a social chameleon, but this is less from a desire to manipulate and more the desire to survive.

Placing so much focus and esteem elsewhere has left her without much for herself, if indeed she even knows who that might really be. Her genuine personality is not something anyone ever really had time for, and so itā€™s rather obscure even to her, and she can be said to be in the midst of an identity crisis. The opinions and viewpoints of others are easily adopted; in this sense, she is both gullible and malleable. Unless you get your science wrong, you can probably convince her of just about anything with sufficient patience and an answer for any question she might fling at you. Sheā€™ll put on a happy face even when she feels like absolute rubbish, not because sheā€™s an optimist, but because she does not wish to annoy other people with her problems.

Thus far, the only parts of herself that she knows well are her curiosity and her diligence, and these are manifest in myriad ways and places. Unless she senses that a person will react aversely to her questions, she asks quite a lot of them, and enjoys learning things that she does not know. In a sense, she is a child acquiring knowledge that children do- her woeful lack of exposure to the world outside a very small radius ensures that she doesnā€™t already have it. In another, she is a savant plastering the glaring gaps in her practical intelligence, for indeed no child could lecture you on the properties of ferric alloys with quite the same aplomb as she.

A bioalchemist by her original specialization, she nevertheless is capable of manipulating just about anything, being that alchemy is almost the extent of her experience. At a young age, her avian wings were surgically removed, and a prevailing drive is to discover a way to regrow them using alchemy, as she feels she is lacking something important without them. At the time, she considered the sacrifice worthwhile, but the bird in her yearns to fly so badly that it hurts some days, and it has proven most distracting at times. When she gets the urge to research or experiment, sheā€™s often found deep in thought about the topics she has in mind, and can thus be said to miss a large part of what goes on around her, unless, of course, she senses that someone grows upset. She has a myriad of nervous habits, including chewing her lower lip, tapping her fingers in frenetic rhythms on surfaces (though if one knows morse code, the messages are often interesting), reciting alchemic tables under her breath and calculating random angles and distances to distract herself from whatever is making her nervous. She can internalize these things if absolutely necessary.

Having been raised in the sky city of Atlantica, she knows how to work machines better than most ravein, but she still canā€™t speak to them the way even the least-adroit humans can. She knows enough to keep her legs in basic working order, but may at times need an engineer with more expertise if anything should seriously damage them- assuming the fix isnā€™t a matter for alchemy alone, of course.

The Talents

Rating System
[Perfect] - [Excellent] - [Good] - [Above Average] - [Average] - [Below Average] - [Poor] - [Very Poor]

Combat Prowess
Poor Hand-to-Hand Combat: Simply put, sheā€™s far too small to do much damage. Her punches would be laughable, though her steel limbs might make her kicks a bit more notable, were she trained in how to use them for that purpose.

Very Poor Melee Combat: Sheā€™s never needed to know how to do this, and thus she does not.

Good Armed Combat: Estelle carries a bow and can shoot with accuracy, aided by better-than-average eyesight and a mathematical brain. Moving targets are not a problem, but she doesnā€™t like guns.

Excellent Magic Combat: One does not earn a title like ā€˜The Emperorā€™s Alchemistā€™ by displaying a merely average proficiency in the craft. She had to be better than just about everyone simply to get the opportunity to improve, and it is a talent and a motivation she has seized upon. The fact that there was little else to do in her circumstances means that sheā€™s spent the same amount of time in study and experiment as many alchemists thrice her age. That said, the combat application of such talents is a skill all its own, and she has less practice with it.

Poor Mounted Combat: Again, itā€™s not something sheā€™s had any experience with whatsoever.

Racial Abilities
Excellent Eagle Eye: Estelleā€™s vision is, in both conditions of light and darkness, naturally adapted to be superior to any of her other senses, and all of these are naturally better than those of humans or majnun. Of course, without the ability to fly, she cannot take the fullest advantage of this, but it is still highly-useful.

Good Fleet: Avians are not known for their strength, but rather most generally for their agility and speed. A she cannot take wing, Stella has been forced to adapt this to a ground-bound condition, but with the aid of her mechanized legs, she does rather well at it.

Excellent Mockingbird: Capable of ventriloquism and throwing her voice, able to imitate the speaking of others, and possessed of perfect pitch, she can also tell if a sound is different, even slightly, from the way she has heard it before- that is to say, her auditory memory is close to perfect.

Very Poor Animal Trait- Flight: She should be able to fly, but she can't, given that her wings were amputated to make her appear human. There are times when this amounts to psychological torture, and she has phantom pains just as someone would who had lost an arm and never replaced it with anything.

Bloodline Traits
Excellent Empathy: Her family have been servants to the wealthy of the sky Factions for untold generations, and have done about as well as one can in this role due to figuring out rather early on that understanding of subtle cues in body language and tone is vital. Estelle can read people very well, even those inclined to stoicism. She is no mind reader, but most of the time, she doesnā€™t have to be.

Good Bird on a Wire: Her sense of balance is superb, and she can work in high places and other precarious locations without fear of falling. Walking on her hands is almost as simple as walking on her feet, though such a talent isnā€™t really useful.

Good Servitude: Believe it or not, being essentially forced to look after someoneā€™s affairs gives a person some useful knowledge. Despite knowing next to nothing about how to survive in the outside world, Stella can cook, clean, repair clothing, and perform domestic skills numerous and sundry.

Class Skills
Perfect Alchemist: With the preparation of proper circles, those with the talent can manipulate and transmute compounds and materials, limited only by the laws of exchange and the creativity of the mind involved. Her original specialization was bioalchemy, and she can direct the body to heal injuries very well.

Excellent Scholar: A lifetime in the worldā€™s largest library has acquainted Stella with a variety of topics and areas of information. Sheā€™s adept at riddle-solving, languages, and learning new things quickly.

Excellent Mathematician: Able to calculate angles, force, and distance with accuracy, Estelle can place projectiles with ease, or gauge a long-distance jump against the required force, for instance.

Pirate Skills

Rating System
[Perfect] - [Excellent] - [Good] - [Above Average] - [Average] - [Below Average] - [Poor] - [Very Poor]

Below Average Sailing: Sheā€™s got theoretical knowledge and is good with physics, but sheā€™s never been on board an airship before.

Very Poor Gunnery: For some reason, Estelle is extremely gun-shy, and refuses to even touch the things. The sound more often than not causes her to cover her ears and sends her under the nearest piece of furniture.

Poor Leadership: Though she has some of the makings of it, namely intelligence and empathy, she is not nearly independent enough to assume the position of leader. She cares too deeply for the way other people think of her.

Good Fighting: Though CQB is a major weakness, she is usually able to avoid such situations, and from a range, sheā€™s a force to be reckoned with.

Perfect Tact: Having learned at a very early stage of life that her condition was directly proportional to how well she was able to read the moods of people around her, this is a skill Estelle has developed to the detriment of her willpower and personal autonomy.

Good Charisma: Itā€™s hard not to like someone who carefully never offends you, and though some may be rubbed the wrong way by her lack of what seems to be a steady personality, she is in actuality both kind and easy to talk to, so itā€™s not all bad.

Above Average Honor: Without a substantive moral compass to work from, itā€™s hard to develop honor. Still, her heartā€™s in the right place, and sheā€™s unlikely to act in a way that could be construed as malicious or self-serving.

Good Courage: It is not the kind of courage that shouts down oneā€™s foes, but rather the kind that allows a person to keep trying in the face of adversity, abuses of power, and constant haranguing.

Very Poor Bloodthirst: Virtually nonexistent. She prefers to patch people up rather then take them apart, but she will if she has to. Thatā€™s not to say sheā€™ll enjoy it, though.

Excellent Intelligence: Her actual knowledge varies widely depending on the topic area, but she learns quickly and retains information well in addition to being something of an authority in her field of expertise.

Good Wealth: She came into a considerable sum of inheritance under most unusual circumstances, and had a rather lucrative job prior to her departure from Atlantica.

Clothing & Armor

Head Stella sometimes wears a red hat with a white feather in it, which appears slightly oversized proportionally.

Neck At times a neckerchief, others just the neckline of whatever shirt she happens to be wearing.

Chest White linen shirt with loose sleeves cinched at the wrist. Depending on the day, what goes over this is usually a red and white frock coat or a sleeveless blue vest. All of it hits about midway down the thigh or so.

Back The same.

Arm/Shoulder Every once in a while, a cloak or cape, mostly for warmth, as she tends to get cold very easily.

Right Hand Stella has special chemically-treated, flame resistant gloves that she wears on occasion. They are black in color, thin enough to preserve dexterity. And obviously tailor-made for her tiny hands.

Left Hand The above.

Right Accessory An upper arm ornament, usually under her sleeves, that resembles a serpent, made of nearly-pure silver.

Left Accessory A silvery bracelet actually made of a titanium alloy. A rare material, and useful for certain forms of transmutation.

Waist An ordinary leather belt, brown.

Legs Made of the same material as her gloves, flame-resistant leggings with thermal properties. Sometimes also wears ordinary linen trousers over these, but not always.

Feet Stella owns two pairs of boots, the first thigh-high and light tanned leather. The second also covers her mechanical legs in their entirety, but hits at the knee instead, and is made of much more formed, less-flexible leather, with some assorted buckling here and there.

Armament

Primary Weapon
Weapon Name: The Amorica Bow

Weapon Type: Recurve bow

Material: Redwood

Ammo: Arrows

Length: 4ā€™5ā€

Weight: 7lbs

Weapon Description/Info: The Amorica Bow is an heirloom of house Amorica, one of the less-important ones, considering the advent of guns. Itā€™s built a bit too large for Estelle, but she chose it over the guns in the armory all the same.

Equipment
Items
Estelle carries a small travelling bag, which contains a few medical-type supplies, some hygiene essentials, and several writing implements and paper, plus one very battered looking leather-bound book, the writing in which all seems to be hers. In addition to the already-mentioned accessories, she also wears a pair of earrings made of silver and carries a few vials of sulfur with her.

Technology
Stella is the present keeper of the Blank Compass, though this is worn on a titanium chain beneath her clothing rather than kept with her other things.

Weapons
Her bow and a quiver of perhaps two dozen arrows, ironically fletched with her own feathers.

Background

Image

Marital Status Single; never married.

Relatives Her parents are both long dead, as is the man who raised her and taught her alchemy, though this is significantly more recent. She never had any siblings that she knows of.

Birthplace Atlantica, the Sky Empire

Occupation Alchemist, fugitive.

Recruitment Not yet recruited.

Bio/History Estelle Amorica was born simply Estelle to a family of ravein servants to the House Amorica, one of the preeminent noble families in Atlantica. She was raised in her youth to be a mindful, polite maidservant, to cook, clean, and garden as necessary to keep the large estate running. Though she did this well, she was by nature a bright child, and wasnā€™t satisfied remaining illiterate and unlearned. She often snuck into the library after hours just to look at the books inside, wistfully trying to read them and imagining what they might say. Her favorites were the alchemy textbooks, with the diagrams of different circles. Even without the accompanying explanations, she was able to understand something of what they said, and replicate one of them in chalk on the ground outside.

Perhaps nothing would have come of it, had the elderly Lord Amoricaā€™s heir not discovered her just as the actual transmutation went off. That a little winged servant girl of no more than six or seven had successfully replicated a transmutation circle (a simple one, but even so) and actually had the talent required to activate it was something the young man found extraordinary, and he asked her if she was the one who thumbed through his books at night.

After that, it was mostly history. The younger Amorica taught Estelle to read and write and perform alchemy just as he had been taught by his father, and though her parents didnā€™t really understand her obsession with it, they were gratified that she seemed at last to be satisfied with her lot in life. In time, the old man died and his son inherited the estate. The new Lord of House Amorica never married, and Estelle alone was privy to the reason for this: he simply did not desire to have a wife. She kept his secret faithfully, and defended him to the other house staff when tongues began to wag as they would.

It was perhaps ten years after they first met that Amorica announced that heā€™d taught her everything he could. Estelle, still desirous to learn more, was unsatisfied with what she did know. Her parents and those sheā€™d grown up with thought she was putting on airs and always had been, but Amorica understood her and recommended applying for admission to the Royal Academy. The idea that such an institution would accept a ravein was entirely ridiculous, of course, and that was the first stumbling block. The solution was troubling enough that Amorica almost refused to suggest it, but at her insistence, he proposed the removal of her wings, the plumage woven in her hair, and her avian feet, and the modification of her pointed ears.

And so it was done, and she acquired two new legs to replace those she lost, with little left of her birthright save the vertical scars at her back. The process was excruciatingly painful, but at the end of it all, Lord Amorica officially adopted her, and under his name she applied to the Academy, where she was accepted for study and spent the next several years. Over time, she gained renown for her skills in bioalchemy, and was approached by no less than the Emperor himself, asking her to begin research on a very important project. A personal request from a descendant of the Architect is not something one refuses, and she was set to work on the project immediately.

Two years before the present time, her secret was discovered, and Lord Amorica executed by firing squad for his part in the duplicity. Though by all rights, she should have been killed as well, she was making such progress that the Emperor spared her, and allowed her to claim the holdings of the Amorica Estate as was her right under her adopted status. For the next two years, she was nothing more than a prisoner, forced to make regular progress reports directly to the Emperor and not allowed to leave the wing of the building in which she was confined. The humiliation she endured during those two years is not something she would readily consent to discuss.

Never one to exercise her will to the detriment of others, even so Estelle knew things could not continue in this manner. The project was dangerous, and she was too close to completion. On the day she finished the formula, she had a brand-new alchemical tattoo added to her repertoire and burned her notes, scattering the ashes outside her window. It was that day, also, that she would steal the Blank Compass and flee the Sky Factionā€™s wrath.

So begins...
