Description

Miles Dyson

Image

Role: Marine/ Commander of the Marines- EDF Atlas

Gender: Male

Nickname(s)/Alias(es): Apache, Mauler, Firefly (Loves to use a Flamethrower to burn Thalians--alive)

Age: 36

Rank:Master Gunnery Sergeant- E-9

Image

Appearance: Dyson's uniform is always, always impeccable. Pristine. His rank insignia, boots and massive side-arm are always highly polished. He almost always is dressed in his BDU or Battle Dress Uniform also called a Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform, MCCUU for short. Geared towards the environment around him, intended for wear in the field or for working parties, but has become the typical working uniform for all deployed and most garrison Marines and Sailors. In his uniform, he like most hardened vets wears his sleeves neatly rolled up most of the way up his biceps. He won't let any Marine that hasn't earned the blood lost, to wear their sleeves likewise. When he's not in his MCCUU he's in his service Dress Blues.

A long-sleeved midnight blue coat (enlisted members, like himself have a red trim) with a standing collar and belt (white web belt and gold waist-plate for the enlisted; midnight blue for officers with a gold M-buckle), white barracks cover (a peaked cap), plain white shirt, sky blue trousers (midnight blue for general officers), white gloves, and black dress shoes and socks. Full-sized medals were worn on his left breast.

He is, perhaps, the most highly decorated man aboard the Atlas with exceptions to Lieutenant Colonel Kaito Narita and Captain Elena Ramirez. He is the most highly decorated enlisted soldier the war has seen so far. These merits are The Legion of Merit, The Purple Heart, the Distinguished Service Cross, The Legion of Merit, The Purple Heart, as well as the Distinguished Service Cross, and the Navy's most prestigious award the Navy Cross that was personally pinned by the Admiral Perry Benson. He has many ribbons for smaller accolades, marksmanship and otherwise--though they pale in comparison.

Because of his many decorations of valor, he also shows the signs of the many scars from the horrible land-fought battles with Thalian forces. One in particular, below his right eye where his cheekbone used to be. In his final engagement, before being transferred to the Atlas He was severely wounded by a Thalian who sought to kill him with its last breath. It shot him in the back of the cranium. The round fortunately fragmented but his cheek bone was destroyed and he needed a steel plate to support and cover his exposed cerebellum.

Many of his squad thought that he had actually died. He was unresponsive due to the traumatic shock of the injury. It took him six to eight months to recover back to full service. But in taking the blow, he aided the final refugees from Proxima Centauri to escape. His face is vaguely asymmetrical, the scar curving around where his cheekbone used to be from where an artificial placement was deposited. This scar runs down the back of his jaw and loops up and around ending where his temple is. The skin was re-grafted with living tissue and stimulated into growing strong cohesive bonds. Nevertheless, those that look at him, even higher ups can be some what intimidated by how strong his spirit is or how much hate he really has for the Thalians. Perhaps it is both.

He sports a tattoo on his right arm just shy of his elbow on the out side. Its ornate, intricate and no one but him seems to know what it really means. It is in a solid black ink with lines varying from slender and diminutive and having an almost artistic flair, to more broad, deliberate strokes. Collectively, the depiction seems to be Arcadian in origin.

Overall, Dyson's height, demeanor and sheer military experience makes him a daunting man to approach. Needless to say, his rough and abrasive disposition doesn't help the matter. He has black-grey hair that is closely cropped to his scalp. This only makes the gruesome detail of his former surgery all the more visible. But he uses it to the advantage of training recruits; shocked by the sight of it, he drills them into never turning their back to an enemy without first making sure its dead.

Preferred Clothing: Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform(MCCUU)
Marine Corps Dress Blues

Height: 6'6

Weight: 235lbs

Hair Color: Peppered colored

Eye Color: Grey-Blue

Personality: Sharp but abrasive. Loyal, but discriminatory. Miles Lee Dyson shares his personality with his ancestor--George S. Patton. A legendary commander of Allied forces in the European theater of World War 2. He commands respect and is always very somber. He expects impeccable conduct from the men under his command and will strive for no less than perfection. He doesn't care about color or sex, nor about social standing--but he will get the respect he deserves. In the early stages of the war with the Thalians, Miles distinguished himself amongst the rest of the Marines that fought bloody battles on ships in space or for control of the land on colonies and worlds. He was awarded several badges of merits for bravery in the line of fire, courage in the face of superior enemy numbers. Others include The Legion of Merit, The Purple Heart, and the Distinguished Service Cross.

Men may have chafed under his severe and strict rule, but there is no denying his efforts to carry the fight to the doorstep of the Thalians. He has led many men under the extreme duress of combat, engaged opposition with minimal losses as possible--and struck harsh blows against the Thalians despite the losses the other commanders in the field sustained. Just like the General whom he is inspired by and related to, he nicknamed his men the "Bloody Bastards of Bastogne" after the men that served in World War 2. The most famous quote of the battle came from the 101st’s acting commander, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe. When confronted with a written request from German General Luttwitz for surrender of Bastogne, his reply was one word: "NUTS!" The commander of the 327th GIR interpreted it to the German truce party as "Go to hell!"

While extremely loyal to his men and women in uniform, he is openly hostile with any Thalian. To Miles, they are a threat that need to be exterminated with extreme prejudice. He is not a man that will hold back comments--good or bad. He is a physically fit, albeit of questionable mind in certain cases. He shows no true compassion except for men and women in uniform. He looks at civilians as possible recruits and nothing else. He will not back down from fights-- human or alien. He is not afraid to challenge the chain of command or go against orders when the situation arises that he must deviate, but only until then, he will follow them to the letter regardless of who it may hurt. His mission is everything to him and he will die to complete it. This fanaticism can be seen again and again through the context of human history--from the Roman legionnaires, to the Knights Templar. It is an extreme form of ethos, a mindset that was garnered by extreme combat fatigue, post traumatic stress and copious amounts of testosterone adrenaline and rage.

Skills:Hand-to-Hand, Marksmanship, Survival, Knife fighting (though that ties in with Hand-to-hand) While not an expert, he is adept with languages, many of the old dialects and some of the xeno-jargon, Battlefield tactics ands first aid.

Smith & Wesson's Model 460XVR has the highest muzzle velocity of any production revolver on earth. Starting with their Extra Large Frame, the Smith & Wesson engineers worked to deliver maximum velocity - the .460 S&W can achieve nearly 2900 ft-lb of energy by driving a 360 grain bullet at 1900 ft/s- to reach the target faster than ever before. The 460XVR has interchangeable compensators to accommodate every load and its "gain-twist" rifled barrel means superb long-range accuracy (beyond 200 yards) with every shot.

2.FR-27 Sanction Flechette Rifle

Category: Assault rifle

Ammunition:.303

The combat rifle is the standard jack-of-all-trades lethal weapon. The default magazine is relatively small at 20 rounds, though with upgrades the weapon can have a magazine size of up to 50. Despite that protracted fire will make the combat rifle's barrel glow orange and steam escape from the loading port during reloads, the combat rifle cannot overheat like heavier rifles. The unusual break-action loading procedure seems to be based on a double barreled shotgun. The weapon has a hinged upper receiver, similar to an AR-15, this usually allows the bolt group to be removed rather than to allow reloading. This method greatly increases reload time compared to other weapons. The rifle appears to use an En-Bloc Clip, normally a Design for caseless ammunition. An En-Bloc-Clip is better for storage in a weapon and also minimizes the risk of being stuck with the magazine in lianas and such however, it needs a place in the rifle, meaning that the reload is needed.

The FR-27 S.F.R. (also known as the 'Sanction') is a widely-deployed combat longarm used by military forces, corporate security, and police special weapons and tactics units. Fully automatic, with a compressed-air rotary helix feeding system, it fires fin-stabilized discarding-sabot flechette ammunition for both penetration and stopping power.

*A flechette is a pointed steel projectile, with a veined tail for stable flight.

Battle of Arcadia

Image

Miles grew up on an outer colony world. The first to be raided when the Humans--in search of sentient life other than itself--found such a life-form in the Thalian race. While much of the history on him was burned away when the Thalians took Arcadia from the humans, it was not entirely lost on a young Miles. When the Thalians went planet side and began a genocidal raid on Arcadia, it was there that he became a child soldier out of necessity, rather than choice. Having to hold the world until reinforcements could reach Arcadia had a profoundly huge impact on Miles. Imagine a six year old having to fight like any man of military age because there were just too many losses--those losses included his parents.

Help came in the form of a human fleet who, after an extended space engagement, caused the Thalians to back away from the world long enough to evacuate what was left of it. Leaving Arcadia, he saw as the world burned even from the altitude above the planets stratosphere. Settlements left molten while fields burned and with them, bodies of the dead and the dying. The effects of the day that Arcadia was attacked would remain to haunt him until the day that he pledged the oath of loyalty to the Earth Defense Force.

As an orphan of the new war, life was never the same childish antics for Miles. He wouldn't play tag or hide-n-go seek. He spent hours researching, reading about wars of humanity's past, and exercised rigorously. Before the fleet reached Arcadia, supplies had been severely reduced as much of it was in the fields and they were burned in a scorched earth tactic that the enemy would often employ. This led to Miles either not eating, or scavenging for food, from catching small rodents to picking the pockets of the deceased for food and eventually--when he was re-enlisted into schools eating out of the garbage or hunting small creatures when really there was no logical means to. Miles also would get into fights with other students and children. Often perceived even as a bully to some psychiatrists that were ignorant of the truth of that hellish time in Arcadia.

Battle of Artemis

Image

The battle of the colony called Artemis would occur 12 years after, one of the bloodiest engagements of the Human-Thalian war, Miles would nonetheless shine. Demonstrating not only great courage and bravery, but also an intuition, an insight into how Thalian's think as a commanders. While it was no game changer--Artemis would ultimately be lost due to the inevitability of resources--it would be one of the greatest moments to Miles and his career that got the Naval and Marine brass to notice a lowly E-5. Outnumbered but with help on the way, Sergeant Miles Dyson managed to hold off a platoon while several of his own squad-mates were dead or dying. While coming under heavy fire, he effectively assassinated a Thalian Regiment commander using a Longsword 202 ERASER (Extreme Range Sniper Rifle), also called an SS - AP5 (Sniper System - Anti Personnel 5 rounds).

Massacre at Proxima Centauri

Image

Artemis was a staging ground for Proxima Centauri. If it was one of the bloodiest battles fought, the Proxima was the bloodiest planets without much resistance. This would be Dyson's final mission as a full soldier. He was a First Sergeant at the time stationed on Centauri. The fleet had decided that the Thalians would have bypassed Centauri due to its relatively low strategic importance, jumped to other, more important sectors. It would come back to haunt them.In a text book repeat of Arcadia, the Thalians spilled into Centauri's sector like locust hordes. Capital ships immediately began bombarding the planets rich atmosphere of nitrogen and oxygen. The cities planet side erupted into fire and brimstone. Fighters and bombers further peppered the landscape with even more destruction.

As a marine, a senior one at that, he gathered what men he could and led them to begin collecting civilians to a bunker for safety until help could arrive. He then took another detachment of two others, and went on a lone mission with all communication cut out temporarily--to search for access to military command communication to give an SOS order to any near by EDF ship in the sector. It was an arduous battle. Street for street, building by ruined building. Fighting with everything he had or anything he could get his hands on. They were in short supply of ammunition, he took what he could from his fallen comrades and made it count.

Eventually, he met up with detachment Delta. A mixture of naval and marine forces struggling to hold the AO.Once it was decided that a full on frontal attack was pointless, two designated marksmen were given the time to reposition themselves while the human main force bore the brunt of the enemy onslaught. Once they had set up their SERSR rifles; highly accurate long-range, bolt-action weapons that featured a built-in sound suppression system that rendered it virtually silent, making the shooter in cover almost undetectable at long range. The sniper could send large caliber rounds against distant targets, thus making it a one-hit kill weapon against non-armored enemies. It would not, however, kill 'heavy' enemies. They laid down covering fire on encroaching hostiles while the group advanced to the control room.

Once the signal was sent, it was put on a loop and in a sub-frequncy. The men with Dyson became trapped inside the AO once the killing zone was breached. What was left of the Marine and Naval forces with Dyson escaped via a maintenance hatch that lead near a sewage line. Miles, thinking outside the box--grabbed some C4 and attached it heavily to one wall that blocked their way into the sewer system. He did this for two reasons, one to make an escape route, but also, the built up methane vapors would cause an incendiary surge that would be powerful enough purge the area of any hidden Thalians and to make a quick get away for any remaining forces that needed it.

The world was lost, the Thalian forces moved on in a matter of hours although they had managed to save a few thousand, it was only handful in comparison. What remained of the human forces, including Miles made fire watches, exchanging watches ever couple of hours or so to protect what remained of the worlds population. After four days human ships finally arrived to assume casualty evacuation. It was while Dyson and a squad of two Marines and a flight deck coordinator were out on patrol to clear the immediate area of any lingering forces, that they ran into only a minor grouping of hostiles left. Nevertheless, With little sleep, little food and hardly any ammunition lending to an already tense situation it made it worse, the fight escalated got out of control. Becoming down right savage, the Thalians attacked when they began to notice the soldiers guns going dry. In hand to hand combat, Thalians were stronger due to their physiology, however, being larger they weren't as agile in tight spaces.

Miles managed to kill two with his combat knife before one tore into the flight deck coordinator. The two Marines joined against the Thalian before it killed the woman. Finally managing to kill the creature, fresh troops from the Destroyer-class Orion spilled onto the charred landscape stunned at what they saw. The absolute devastation of Centauri was a morale shock, yet seeing their struggling brothers and sisters they rejoiced and began helping to evacuate the remnants of the population as well as what was left of the forces. As they were doing so, a Thalian thought to have been killed in the firefight preceding the close quarters combat, fired. Miles, who shoved a woman and child out of the way of the bullet, was struck in the back of the head.

It would be 8 long, painstaking months of rehabilitation, extensive surgery and service recommendation before Miles Dyson would see himself in uniform again.

So begins...
