Description

Name
: Come down officially as Medusa Colby. She will not use that surname unless utterly necessary however, and tends to go by Meddie more than Medusa.
Age: 16
Grade: 10th
Height: 5'7
Appearance: Meddie is pretty distinctive, being a gorgon. Most noticable is the fact that her hair is a matt of living, hissing snakes. Most are black and white banded seasnakes, though a few vipers seemed to be mixed in with them. Her skin is marked with patches of pale green scales that often shed their skin. Her canine teeth are pointed and her nails will grow to talon-like points if she doesn't cut them frequently. She has a forked tongue, much like a snake.

Most notably she tends to cover her face, especially her eyes. Dark glasses aren't considered sufficiently 'secure' so a fabric wrap she can see through, ski goggles, or a tinted mask tend to be used.

CLothing wise, outside of an uniform she's required to wear, Meddie went through a phase of 'charity shop goth' that she never really moved on from. She generally wears a long, black woolen coat, a long sleeved grey top, dark skirt and a thick woolen snood, as well as heavy boots and fingerless gloves. She doesn't like showing her skin off, as half of it is scaly. She had trouble getting enough to eat for some time, and is still a little underweight.

Sexual preference: Unclear, Meddie has never had a relationship, or even had feelings for another person.

Wing: Avalon
Power: - Regarding Medusa's face can make people feel uncomfortable, even sick. Looking Medusa directly in the eyes, causes the victim to go into a state of extreme shock. Their muscles lock up and they are generally rendered completely unresponsive for up to a day afterwards. However, these attacks will often trigger heart attacks or a cerebral haemorrhage, rendering the victim either seriously ill or dead. This ability is involuntary, and Meddie can't turn it off.

-Medusa's blood is an incredibly effective healing agent, seeming to have an almost miraculous effect in helping those affected recover from serious illness or injury. It seems to have incredibly antibiotic properties, and can kill almost any pathogens in a person's bloodstream. Unfortunately it takes large amounts of blood, tissue or bone to have the required effect.

Species: Greek Gorgon
Roommate: Pending
Romantic interest: Pending

Persona:

Clever: Meddie is very intelligent and perceptive, easily picking up on things that others might miss. She has a decent knowledge of a wide range of subjects, and so can apply something she knows to most situations. She is also very good at planning under pressure, rarely seeming to lose her cool. She gets consistently high grades in classes, and tends to have a book in her hands or pretty closeby. She seems to have a scientific explanation for a lot of things, except her own origins.

Caring: For those few that Meddie learns to care for, she is very protective of them, and will go to great lengths to ensure their safety. She can generally be depended upon to have worked out a practical way to deal with a problem and can often end up as something of a big sister figure to people whom she actually likes, which are, admittedly, not great in number.

Introvert: Meddie is not a social butterfly. She does not enjoy large crowds of people or extended social situations, and seems to favour more individual hobbies like reading, music, archery, and listening to BBC Radio 4.

Rude: Meddie is often rude and irritable with others. She is quite impatient with others and make not attempt to moderate what she says to people, something that often gets her into trouble.

Cynical: She tends to automatically assume the worst in others, and always expects a sort of motive to whatever someone is doing. She finds it very hard to accept that someone is just being nice.

Self-esteem issues: Medusa is very touchy about her appearance. She is very much insecure about how she looks, and insulting that is one of the easiest ways to provoke her into a temper. In many ways she feels as if looking as she does makes her worth less than if she were to look more appealing. This often makes Meddie very defensive with people, often taking shows of affection as an attempt to make fun of her.

History:

Medusa, or Meddie as she tends to be referred, is a greek cypriot gorgon, though her exact origins aren't well documented. She was told that she was first picked up by the Colby Circus, a european touring circus that was visiting Vasilikos, Cyrus, on the way to Limassol. The group supposedly discovered an adult gorgon, who was scare doff by their approach, and who left a small child behind.

As a result, she was named Medusa, after the most famous of the mythological gorgons, and raised as a performer, or 'freak' within the circus. As a child, things were perfectly fine. The Colby family treated her much like their own child and she had a limited understanding of why people paid to see her, and why she could kill chickens by looking at them. At the time, it all seemed very much like a game. However as Meddie reached adolescence things began to change for her. While she had always possessed the snakes, they had been babies, and had lacked fangs. As she grew up they gained a bite, and rather potent venom. She also began to appear more notably 'monstrous' as she hit puberty. She began to get scales on her skin, her canines grew in sharp, as did her nails. People were aware that the average gorgon was, in a word 'hideous', but Meddie had never encountered another of her kind, and the changes she underwent were distressing, both in their magnitude and in how it changed people's attitude toward her. While once she had been strange but endearing, her appearance started to draw fear and loathing from audiences.

By the time Meddie had reached 14, the circus was going under. Performers started to leave for other work, and Meddie found herself in a difficult situation. She couldn't manage on her own in the world of humans. It was evident that most of them thought her fearful and hideous and would want little to do with her.

The exact circumstances that led to her leaving the circus are not something Meddie had ever talked about in detail, but she ended up by herself, in a rather unforgiving world, and for some time experienced a present danger, as people aware of the healing power of her blood set out to track her down. As such, Meddie was unable to settle, and drifted around Europe, with no money or destination. This lasted for a good few months before she ran into a representative from the school. They offered it to her, and Meddie swiftly agreed. While she had been given no formal education while growing up, Meddie had always lved to read, and did exceptionally well in academic tests, meaning she was able to start in the appropriate grade for her age.

Medusa has been at the school for around six months, and is supportive of keeping the partition. She is mistrustful of humans, and disapproves of the idea of having to live in close proximity to any, so the division suits her fine.

So begins...

"How did I fall asleep again?" Eloise thought soon after she woke up on the school yard's grass again. "That sudden nap was boring..."

The elf got up and stared at the sky as the light breeze moved her long blonde hair. Her glance stopped at several girls from the academy.
"Bingo." she grinned and ran.

"Hey there, March students!" she yelled with a wide smile on her face. "I bet none of you can beat me in tree climbing! Is there anyone who wants to prove me wrong?"

A figure sat on one of the wooden benches along the path, halfway through a copy of Crime and Punishment, was the dark-clad figure of Medusa Colby, in a black woolen coat. It was kind of a pain to try and get through Dostoyevsky when you had a scarf tied up over to top half of your face.

She''d gotten used to the whole thing to some degree, she guessed she probably had better vision that most people she knew, but it was always going to be held back by something covering her eyes. Last time she'd tried to read without them she'd accidentally looked out the window and killed a small bird outside...found it lying on its back with its legs sticking up in the air. She felt guilty about that one, though taking out a starling was a little better than taking out her roommate. Honestly Meddie would've preferred not having to share with anybody, for the reason of having to try and keep her...eye problem under wraps all the time but considering her accommodation before the school she couldn't rightly complain.

Voices closeby caught her attention as she caught sight of the shape of Eloise.
"An elf wanting to climb a tree. What a shock." the gorgon muttered, until it came to her attention who the challenge was aimed at.

March students.

Meddie bristled a little.

She was not a fan of humans.

Even the weird ability-endowed ones.

At this, the hood of the top she'd been wearing began to shift as multiple pairs of beady black eyes glimmered underneath, the snakes in her hair being awoken by their counterpart's concern. They emitted a low hiss, baring their fangs until the gorgon tugged the hood up again irritably.

She then rose to her feet, regarding the whole thing from a short distance, with Dostoevsky tucked under her arm .
"Whose to say the mini-superheroes won't start cheating as soon as you get off the ground?" she remarked, quite prepared to take an opportunity to regard March students with suspicion. Her voice tended to linger a little too long on the 's' sounds, like the hiss of some kind of reptile. The sharpened teeth and forked tongue didn't really help matters.
"Not really a challenge if someone just flies or levitates or teleports to the top, is it?"

"This whole affair had now escalated into quite a spectacle as I can see." Asuna sighed as she watched more people joining in. First, it was the elf Eloise then, the non-human Ryder joined in. Finally, her fellow March students, Nanami and Aibu join in.

"Well, good luck to you girls. Try not to hurt yourselves." She soon lost interest in watching and carried on walking, taking in the sights to be found in the school. She was fairly new but, she thinks she's got some bearings now. This was a school for "abnormals", as that's what she refers to those like her, with abilities that baffle people or being born of a different species. Being divided into two wings; one for them "abnormal humans" and the "non-humans", as she calls the Avalon students.

"I understand that you don't get along but, I personally had no idea that it occurs on a daily basis." Sighing for the last time, she glanced around to look for a place where she could sit down. She saw one, a wooden bench by the bench. She walked up to it and sat down, feeling the wind caress her skin. In her hurry though, she didn't notice that there was another person there.

"Ah! Sorry." She apologized thinking that she may be disturbing something and inched a little more to her right, giving some much needed space between them. Upon observation, she realized that the girl was a non-human. Still, the tension was a little unnerving so she thought of something to break the ice.

"Russian literature eh? Are you more of a classics person than contemporaries when it comes to you choice of material?" She talked to the girl on the other end.

Eloise grinned. "No using powers allowed!" She shouted with her arms on her waist.

"Just kidding! Haha! Feel free to use whatever you want, as long as we all leave the start at the same time! Teleporting, flying, time travel, dividing by zero, everything is allowed right now, right at this one race! However! " Eloise clinged to a tree. "We need a non participator who will set the start, observe the competition and announce the winner!"

"Well, as I can see everyone is going to join this challenge, so I'm going to set the start and announce the winner." She walks to the grass and stretches her arms up. "I hope everyone is ready. I believe in The March Students! They are the best!" She shouts as she watches everyone climbing the tree.
She touches her hair while keeps watching them. "Is everyone ready or not?" She asks as she keeps touching her hair. "I think Aibu is going to win I believe in her." She grins as she looks now to Aibu. Aibu was her roommate but also her bestfriend, they met each other at the kindergarten, Aibu understands a lot Nanami. She winks at her and chuckles as she approaches her and pats her head gently.

"So it's not actually a challenge, it's pretty much just whatever you had the luck to be born with that determines the winner then." Medusa responded bitterly.

I.E, something else that she couldn't participate in by virtue of not being born able to do anything that was functional. She had one ability she couldn't use, and one she had to severely harm herself to use, and even then it was for the benefit of someone else, so what plenty of the rest of the student body saw as 'fun' Meddie saw as another reminder or her own inherent shortcomings, which she didn't really need to be reminded of when her hair was getting into a fight under her hood.

"Super fun unless, y'know, you don't have special powers to use. Then it's just another opportunity for people to laugh at you."

Of course that wasn't exactly true. Medusa did have powers, she just couldn't use them. Of course it'd be easy enough to win a competition if she took off her blindfold and killed all the other participants, but she wasn't a serial killer and had no intention of becoming one.

Hearing someone speak up, Medusa looked round. She had a hard time picking up when people were approaching as the faric tended to make her peripheral vision work badly. The snakes starting to hiss though quickly told her it was a human before she could even make them out against the sun. Meddie shifted over in discomfort.

There was a rather awkward silence before the human student started to make conversation regarding the book under the gorgon's arm.

"I read pretty much everything." she replied after a few moments. Meddie's accent was rather hard to place. It could have been greek, or eastern european...though a few of her enunciations could have passed for english.
"Anything I could get my hands on, but I haven't had a chance to read many classics until I got here."

Meddie had never had access to a library before. Most of the circus performers with who she had grown up with were poorly educated themselves. Her own literacy had been mainly self-taught, and had been from a mixture of taking the others kids' comic books, the strongman's russian bodybuilding magazines, and the fortune teller's cheap romance novels and reading through each of them. The books she had had, that were genuinely hers, had been gifts or things she'd saved up for... all left behind when she had had to walk away from her life with a backpack full of stuff. A change of clothes, a toothbrush, fifty euros and a bag of dead mice for her snakes. No room for the books.

"Making up for lost time..." she added, realizing she's been silent for a minute or so.
"Though I think I prefer The Brothers Karamasov. I can't identify with Raskolnikov. Murder isn't justified, even for a supposedly altruistic cause. Though maybe that's the point of the story."

"I read pretty much everything. Anything I could get my hands on, but I haven't had a chance to read many classics until I got here."

"Really? That's rather admirable. I personally find myself unable to finish any material in one sitting. I guess that's why I prefer short reads like articles, editorials and stuff, you know?" Asuna replied. The person she was talking to seem to have some sort of accent but, it wasn't too hard to catch. Asuna herself was no native English speaker as well. "Come to think of it, I haven't sat down with a nice book in a while..." She recalled.

"Though I think I prefer The Brothers Karamasov. I can't identify with Raskolnikov. Murder isn't justified, even for a supposedly altruistic cause. Though maybe that's the point of the story."

"Hmmm...I haven't read Russian literature myself so I don't know the whole story but--I seem to recall a lesson I once learned way back then." Asuna's interest was caught by the word "justified". She somehow had an interest in looking up philosophies and the like. To prevent her hands from wandering about in gestures, she cast a small illusion of a lump of shadow in her hands. She was shaping it as she talked, which made her feel a bit more comfortable.

"Murder, the act itself, can be called evil. There's no doubt about that. However, I was taught that there can be factors that makes it justified. One is that when it is done with good intentions like, say, self-defense or as a means of retaliating against authority. Among the hierarchy of values, one's own life is more important than an aggressor's. Or at least that's what I heard. Another thing is the circumstances. By principle of double effect, if there is no other way out, then--well, you know. So while it can't be good, it can be justified." Asuna finished at the same time as she finished shaping it into a butterfly, letting it fly out of her hand.

"Oh, sorry. I got carried away in my ramblings. Hope I wasn't being too much of a bother." She apologized to the Avalon student. She shifted her gaze back to the competition. "Hey, what do you think of the competition? Between our two wings, that is." Asuna asked.

"You start allowing for a grey area and people will work out reasons to justify it to themselves. I'm not talking about self-defence though. I'm talking about actually attacking another person with the intent of killing them, like Raskolnikov. You might think that's common sense, but then you realize how many people would justify it to themselves somehow. 'I'm a good person, they're bad and deserve it.' 'The end justifies the means.' or by developing some kind of 'other' by which they're worth less and are thereby okay to kill. Another faith, another nationality...or another species. When you're a monster it doesn't take long before you start working that out, but I'm not here to talk ethics." Medusa stated, before giving a non-committal shrug in the face of her own surmisation of what was wrong with the world, well, one of the things that was wrong.

The conversation was turning to more immediate, issues.

"The 'competition'? it's a joke, and not a funny one." she responded derisively.
"Competition would imply that there was any actual skill involved, when there's none whatsoever. Who ever has the power best suited to the situation will win. You don't have to be good at anything. What's the point of having competitions when it only measures who is naturally equipped to cheat most effectively? "

"I suppose you are correct. Maybe some just like to make their own justifications by rationalizing that it's okay to take those who are on the lighter side of the scales. This whole thing with regards to ethics and morality is quite complicated, I agree." Asuna stated, in response to the non-human's reply.

"The 'competition'? it's a joke, and not a funny one. Competition would imply that there was any actual skill involved, when there's none whatsoever. Who ever has the power best suited to the situation will win. You don't have to be good at anything. What's the point of having competitions when it only measures who is naturally equipped to cheat most effectively? "

"But, isn't that generalization a bit unfair? As humans--no--as creatures of this Earth, none of us are alike in every form. We are all born with different capabilities from each other, some more suited to certain tasks than others--such as this little facade, for instance. Maybe--" Asuna paused for a bit to gather some more shadows, just so she can keep her hands busy. "Maybe most of us are insecure within ourselves. Maybe that's why we choose to challenge others in fields we excel in. No one likes wandering out of their comfort zones. Everyone prefers to stay within their own boxes, I guess."

Asuna glanced back at the competition. It seemed they were about to start. "I don't think I can blame them though. We all just like to be different and, well...somehow better than the rest. While most prefer to stay within their own box, no one likes sharing that box with others, hence the need to keep proving ourselves. Is it even still cheating...when what you have is a talent you acquired by birth or developed on your own? Aren't we somehow all veterans here? Having learned to regulate our own abilities--I think that can be called as skill, no?"

Her eyes shifted to the blue firmament above as she gets completely lost in the conversation. "In the end, I think it's just pride. As long as we have it, facades like these are bound to happen. The question is how to overcome it? Our own pride. What do you think?"

Eloise was resting on the top of the tree, happy with the competition results.

"I'll let you have a rematch." the elf looked at obth of them. "The competition will be different." she hopped off the tree.
"This time..." Eloise let her cane go. "...no powers involved. It will be all on physical abilities. Whenever you want, I'm ready. Would that be now? Later? After classes? Some other day? It will be up to you three. Also, the red hair over there! I want you to participate! I'm in the same room with this beauty over there..." she pointed ar Ryder and told the rest the room number.
"We'll have a rematch... or just hang out. Or both! We must do both!"

"You two over there! I want you to join us too! I want you to participate in the rematch! No powers involved, you hear?" she pointed at Meddie and Asuna.

"That's the point!" Eloise replied to Asuna. "We'll see how dependent they are on their powers! Besides, with or without using powers, both cases can be somewhat unfair."

Eloise later turned to the rest. "We don't have to do this competition now. We can just go hang out somewhere before class starts."

Another dream with Fintan, well, more like another recounting with of her previous cycles. This time it was World War I and in the trenches again. Hell was everywhere around Fintan, whom was operating on a wounded British soldier as bullets and artillery came over all around as she worked. Soon she yelled something or another to another medic, whom went off, as Fintan remembered, he had run off to his death. Though the next words woke her immediately,

Gas! Gas! GAS!

Quickly Fintan shot up from her sleep, sitting in her bed now, the morning sun peeked in through the window of her room giving it a slightly red glow as it hit her covers, which were red and still warm to her before she looked at the clock. To put it mildly, she was etching on being late on her first day, which prompted her to quickly rise from her bed and put on her clothes, before going out the window and spreading her wings and flying fast over to the main school building.

Soon she noticed some students, and stopped, gently landing on her feet with her wings dissipating rather quickly as she looked at them all and smiled hoping her thick Irish accent wouldn't stop her from talking to them effectively,

"'Ello ladies. I see the dote little elf wants to race. What is the reason for it, Might I ask?"
